Ep. 8: Happy New Year, Crew! Road trip prep and tips, Edmunds.com's top vehicles for overlanding09 Jan 202500:54:29

Our first podcast in 2025! Do you know the lyrics to Auld Lang Syne? This is commonly known as the "New Years Eve" song in America. If not, then check out our links to learn more.

In this episode, Garrick and Melody meet up to discuss their preparations for their respective holiday road trips and share some tips along the way.

In the main segment we cover Edmund's list of the best (new) trucks & SUV's for overlanding. We provide an overview of each vehicle listed and give our personal reactions to each. There are a lot of good rigs on the list, but something appears to be missing...

We finish out the episode with our second edition of random recommendations, and they truly are random.

Thank you, crew, for supporting us in 2024. We hope you had a lovely holiday season and look forward to sharing more adventures with you in 2025!

Ep. 7: Happy holidays, Squatches! Scott to the rescue, beware the tariffs, Wisconsin Old Fashioned, Can you go camping: the game26 Dec 202401:10:46

****SENSITIVITY WARNING**** Mentions of death and suicide in the context of Search and Rescue missions to recover human remains. The content may be distressing or upsetting for some listeners. Please take care when deciding whether to listen to this episode. If you feel that the subject matter may be triggering or uncomfortable, we encourage to skip this episode or proceed with caution.

This week we are joined by our friend, Scott! Scott drives a 4Runner TRD Pro and shares with us how he discovered overlanding.

We have gone on some epic overland trips with Scott in the past, so we jump into discussing some of the highlights of our trip to Idaho last year. Scott sometimes overlands with a teardrop trailer that can be a blessing and a curse depending on the trail conditions.

Scott and Garrick recount their recent weekend trip to Douglas Creek in central Washington.

In the gear focus segment, Scott forecasts that tariffs could have a dramatic effect on gear pricing in the near future. The crew is divided on whether rooftop tents are worth it.

The main focus of this episode is Scott's experience with his Search and Rescue team. Scott shares the joys and motivations of supporting his team, reveals the stark realities of recovery missions and how they affect him personally, the ins and outs of a typical mission, and encourages others to join the ranks if you feel the calling.

We close out the episode with a new segment, Random Recommendations. In this segment we share something that we think is worth checking out that may or may not be overlanding related.

Both Melody and Garrick made cable improvements to their portable power stations and Garrick did the same for his 12V fridge. Melody also received the fix for her Warn winch controller, but it's complicated!

Garrick then jumps in to detail his week long trip riding motorcyles and a little 4x4 action while in Moab. Highlights include Slick Rock, Fins & Things, the Utah BDR, Canyonlands & Arches National Parks, Chicken Corners, Hells Revenge, and tons of crashes in between. We close out the episode covering what worked and what didn't on the trip.

We our joined this week by our friend Beth who drives a 2021 SR5 4Runner that's taken on a scratch or two since she first bought it. We discuss some of the mods that Beth has added to her rig and how she chose them.

Garrick enjoyed his first bikepacking trip. It involved a couple ferry rides from Seattle to the Kitsap Peninsula, questionable sushi choices, and a run in with the law.

Beth is leading a weekend trip to the Douglas Creek recreation area and shares some of her pre-trip planning tips and how she focuses on safety.

We discuss how we deal with rain while camping in the wet PNW through our gear selection.

Our news topic is about how to navigate community dynamics when it comes to trail stewardship.

Our main topic is about where we find ourselves on the spectrum of appreciating the journey or the destination more while overlanding. We close out the show by discussing what happens when a plan falls apart and you have to improvise.

Our second new segment is covering a news topic. This may not be  the latest breaking news, but is something noteworthy and currently relevant to the overlanding community. We cover the controversial YouTube video which poses the question if overlanding is a scam.

Ep. 17: Desert 100 If You Dare, iOverlander Developer Responds To Community, Gear Wins and Woes16 May 202500:51:20

Quick disclaimer on this episode. We had a technical difficulty where our studio software selected the wrong microphone on Garrick's computer. Garrick's audio is lower quality than our usual standard, but it does get corrected around the 35 minute mark. Thank you for your understanding!

We have a couple of interesting updates from previous shows to start this episode off. First Garrick shares his terrible customer support experience with GSI Outdoors, then Melody provides a glimpse at the community interaction iOverlander is having after disabling their original app.

What have we been up to lately? Melody had a fun, if windy, trip down to The Dalles on the border between Washington and Oregon. She also figured out how to fix the rear cargo door on her 5th gen 4Runner. Garrick took a trip out to Eastern Washington to experience the Desert 100 event in Odessa and managed to drop his motorbike a ton.

Do you have a power station that you are not using between your overland trips? We share some ways to use them in between trips and maybe even save you a little money in process.

As always, we close out the episode with a fresh set of Random Recommendations!

Ep. 16: Zippers meet dirt, Smoked out camping, Free satellite texting, Gear rants and raves02 May 202500:46:36

This week we meet to discuss Garrick's "snow" camping experience and Melody shares some upcoming events in the PNW this May!

If you're an iPhone user, you might be able to satellite text message for free! We did some testing of this feature and were mostly impressed, but there are some limitations.

Prepare yourself for Garrick's ranting and raving about gear from a few well known companies in the overlanding and outdoor recreational industries.

Have you had to deal with dirt affecting your zipper performance? We have as well! Garrick did some research into some mitigation solutions and Melody will be testing our top pick.

Demetre has explored quite a bit of the USA, so we discuss his favorites which include Wyoming, the Grand Circle, and Moab.

We share some of our overlanding goals like getting to the Arctic Ocean and Demetre's goal to discover (pun intended) the source of the Columbia River.

Demetre works for ARB, so of course we had to discuss the brand's gear and the Australian outback, don't you reckon?

We close out with our random recommendations.
