Beetlejuice & Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - Do people still want to see Tim Burton movies?18 Sep 202401:26:12

This week, Rolando, Nicole, and Eddie take a deep dive into the lasting legacy of Tim Burton's distinctive filmography, focusing on Beetlejuice. We explore why Burton’s gothic, eccentric style has resonated so strongly with audiences—particularly millennials. What is it about his unique blend of whimsy and darkness that keeps his work so beloved, even decades later?

Next, we focus on Beetlejuice itself and uncover an interesting revelation: despite Michael Keaton's unforgettable portrayal, the title character doesn't appear until more than halfway through the film. Instead, the true narrative centers around the Maitlands, portrayed by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, and their attempt to navigate the afterlife. We also take a moment to appreciate the stellar performances of Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Delia, who bring a remarkable energy to the film.

Finally, we discuss the long-awaited sequel, which began production in 2023 after years in green lit limbo. Was this return to the world of Beetlejuice worth the wait? We also examine the absence of Jeffrey Jones and whether Tim Burton still has the box office power he once commanded. Join us as we explore the answers to these questions and more in this lively discussion.

This week, Rolando pops off on his love-hate relationship with Showtime's series, "Dexter." Nicole plays devil's advocate for some of the decisions made on the show's initial 8-season run. What was the appeal of this series? And why was the series finale hated by so many?

Cowboy Bebop - A one minute beat off02 Dec 202101:06:15
Well howdy, Space Cowboy! This week let's take a trip to the distant future where our Earth has been trashed and the planets and moons have been colonized. 1998's "Cowboy Bebop" introduced us to a galaxy with space travel, criminal syndicates, and bounty hunters. The show gave us the suave Spike and his partner, Jet, as the two travel planet to moon collecting bounties on their ship, Bebop. What is it about this simple premise that makes this show revered? And how does it hold up over 23 years later? Then, Nicole and Rolando discuss Netflix's remake, "Cowboy Bebop." Announced in 2017, the show has been in development for several years and finally dropped just before Thanksgiving. Is this show all style and no substance? And what are audiences looking for when Hollywood adapts beloved animes? Listen to find out.

Then they turn their attention to the latest offering from Disney Plus, "Home Sweet Home Alone." This time we get to know the would-be burglars. The Wonder Years - The State of Network TV11 Nov 202101:12:54
Apparently, Nicole and Rolando thought that the ABC's 1988 family show, "The Wonder Years" was actually filmed in the 60's. Was it impressive filmmaking or just the folly of youth? This week, the two discuss the popularity of the show and its handling of adolescence. Are Kevin and Winnie #couplesgoals? And was the show better when it handled real life issues and not just relationship drama?   Then, they turn their attentions to the 2021 reboot, "The Wonder Years" on ABC. Same time period but a new family. Who was this show made for? And does it capture the magic of the original? Chucky - Are we ready for Chucky, the gay icon?04 Nov 202100:58:10

It's finally happened. Something Rolando and Nicole covered on the podcast has since gotten a remake or revival.

This week they turn their attentions to Child's Play and the Chucky saga. The two spoke about the original 1988 film in July 2019. The Chucky character, created by Don Mancini has a long history on the big screen and can now be found on the small screen in the new USA & SyFy series, "Chucky."

And, this time Chucky is protecting (or grooming) a gay teenager in Hackensack, NJ. And Rolando and Nicole have a lot of thoughts and feelings about that. Thoughts like, "Is revenge ever right?" "Is Chucky the queer icon we need?" And, "Where is this idyllic version of Hackensack located because it ain't Jersey."

This week, Nicole and Rolando cover the two film adaptations of Frank Herbert's "Dune." First they discuss the 1984 classic (?) by David Lynch. How did he end up as the director of this film and why was it considered a flop? Then, we discuss Denis Villeneuve's adaptation. Slightly longer than David Lynch's film, this film splits the source material into two parts. Was it a smart choice? Listen to find out.

Scenes from a Marriage - Where Was Oscar Issac‘s Glow-Up?30 Sep 202101:36:44

Marriage: blessing or curse? This week, Nicole and Rolando discuss Ingmar Bergman's "Scenes from a Marriage," a 1973 Swedish mini-series that showed audiences the dissolution of a "successful" marriage. The series would go on to be blamed for Europe's then-rising divorce rates. The series broke new ground in its often raw depiction of a failing marriage. Does it glamorize divorce or show the brutality of "love."

Then, they turn their attentions to HBO's remake, "Scenes of Marriage," starring Jessica Chastain and Oscar Issac. This time, the tables are turned when the gender roles are reversed. Does the series sustain its impact with the new changes? And, considering the popularity of "divorce stories," can this series break new ground?

Listen to find out.

She/He‘s All That - Happy Birthday, F. Scott Fitzgerald23 Sep 202101:19:28
1999 was quite a year for teen movies: Cruel Intentions. 10 Things I Hate About You. Drive Me Crazy. Jawbreaker. And of course, "She's All That" starring Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Rachel Leigh Cook. The Pygmalion adaptation focuses on high school teens who fall in love in the midst of a cruel bet. And Rolando was surprised how dark the film could be at times. Was high school ever really this mean?   Then, flash forward to 2021 when Netflix dropped "He's All That," a retelling of the beloved teen movie but with a twist: The girl gives the guy a popularity makeover. Because equality? The film explores the fragile relationship between teenagers and social media. Does it actually deliver on a message? Listen to find out.

As we dissect power struggles, character dynamics, and the legacy of "Road House," we also look ahead to latest remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal. How does Gyllenhaal's portrayal compare to Swayze's? Does the film's cast of characters become its downfall? And what was up with Conor McGregor's performance?

Tune in for a comprehensive exploration of "Road House," from its memorable moments to its missed opportunities for improvement. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a curious critic, this episode offers insights and revelations you won't want to miss.

Cruella & 101 Dalmatians - I Can Excuse Animal Cruelty, but I Draw the Line at Bad Movies03 Jun 202101:46:54
Is there a bigger sin than animal cruelty? Nicole, Rolando AND Eddie Z get into this week as they discuss one of Disney's most notorious villainesses, Cruella De Vil. But is she really all that bad? What makes her so "hated?" How did Cruella's character evolve between 1961's animated-feature, "101 Dalmatians" and 1996's live-action remake starring Glenn Close. And, in retrospect, is Cruella as evil as we make her out to be. Then they pivot to the 2021 Disney reimagining, "Cruella" starring Emma Stone. Can Disney change a villains bad reputation? But more importantly, why bother? And lastly, just in time for PRIDE, Nicole and Rolando discuss gay representation in Disney films. Disney has been self-congratulating for featuring their first openly gay character. Except, this isn't their first openly gay character. And, what even is an "openly gay character." Nicole and Rolando discuss. You don't want to miss out. Listen now. SHOWNOTES:

Mortal Kombat - Even Men Can Be a Mary-Sue. Equality!29 Apr 202101:19:38

Test your might. Fight!

Round 1: 1995's Mortal Kombat, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, follows protagonist Lou Kang on a revenge mission while simultaneously protecting the Earth-realm from Shang Tsung and his minions. How does this film rank amongst other video-game-adaptations? Is this film a flawless victory?

Round 2: 2021's Mortal Kombat has dropped in theaters and HBO Max. But, instead of following Lou Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade we're introduced by Mary-Sue, Cole Young. And we're given the gift of exposition dumping and CGI.

But which film delivers the KO? Listen to find out.

Justice League - Does This Even Qualify?22 Apr 202101:34:04
Justice League: The Snyder Cut. Hot mess or masterpiece? But more importantly, is it even a remake? Nicole argues that 2017's Justice League is the remake of Snyder's original vision. Rolando argues the theatrically released film is the original and the Snyder cut is a remake. Where do you stand? And, to answer the question about whether or not these films were any good they'll be joined by friends-of-the-pod, The Brotherhood of Batman. Listen as everyone kikis and shares their thoughts on both the theatrical release and the HBO Max exclusive.

Godzilla VS. Kong - I Have Expected Them To Kiss08 Apr 202101:09:07
The fight you've all been waiting for is finally here. Rolando versus Nicole? Nope - lower those expectations. It's Godzilla versus King Kong. Or just Kong as he's been dethroned or something. We don't know. We never saw "Kong: Skull Island." But before we talk about 2021's "Godzilla Vs. Kong," Rolando and Nicole go way back in time and discuss 1933's "King Kong" and 1954's "Godzilla." One of these films would change filmmaking forever. The other will spawn a Kaiju craze. But what is the depth behind these two films and why do audiences hold them so dear even today? And did you know that these two overgrown beasts have met before? Because they did in 1962's "King Kong Vs. Godzilla," proving that men in monster suits fighting over miniatures will always pack in theaters. Can the same be said in 2021? Listen to find out. CONTACT US:

Saved by the Bell - When Woke Becomes the Butt of a Joke01 Apr 202101:23:47

If you're a millennial you likely grew up watching "Saved by the Bell." Maybe you stuck with the show through "The College Years." Hell, maybe you even witnessed Zack and Kelly get married in "Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas." And you probably grew up thinking, "Zack Morris is so cool!" Until a little YouTube series by "Funny or Die" shattered that illusion with "Zack Morris is Trash." And suddenly, every fan of Saved by the Bell was forced to reckon with the realization that Zack Morris is kind of a douche.

At least that was Nicole and Rolando's journey with the show. This week, the duo take aim at "Saved by the Bell" and the Peacock revival.

What is the legacy of the after-school sitcom for kids? Was AC Slater Italian or Hispanic? Why was Jessie Spano so hated by audiences back in the day? And how do you revive a show with a problematic main character? Peacock's answer: replace him with a poor, inner-city Latina. Is that enough? Listen to find out.

Shout out to our listener Freddy for recommending this week's episode. We needed an extra week of content to fill the gap while we wait for Godzilla vs King Kong. Be more like Freddy and slide into our DMs or email with your topic ideas. We just might do it. Info in the show-notes.

Punky Brewster - Checking Off All The Boxes25 Mar 202101:28:48
This week is all about America's favorite little orphan! No, not Annie. It's the one and only Punky Brewster! Did you grow up with this show? Rolando and Nicole certainly didn't but Eddie Z is the show's fiercest defender and helps explain why kids loved it. Does the show's wholesomeness stand the test of time? Then, Soleil Moon Frye reprises the role that made her a child star in 2021's Peacock original, "Punky Brewster." Nicole comes swinging while Eddie Z bobs and weaves. Did the revival abandon the free-spirit that won over hearts in the 80's and maker her too "normal?" Is the show trying too hard by introducing LGBTQIA+ secondary characters - or did it miss the mark by not injecting Punky with a little queerness? Coming to America, Coming 2 America - Celebration of Black Excellence18 Mar 202100:55:26
Before Wakanda there was Zamunda. This week, Nicole and Rolando discuss 1988's "Coming To America." The movie is regarded as an 80's classic comedy and marks a turning point for Eddie Murphy's career. How does the movie hold up and where does it rank among Eddie Murphy's career? Then, 32 years later, Hollywood revisits Zamunda. However, instead of a fairy tale love story they give us the story about gender politics and illegitimate children. Does the film capitalize on its black excellence or has the franchise lost its shine? Superman -The Most Important Metric: Hotness11 Mar 202101:08:08

When Nicole is away, the gay geeks will play.

This week, Nicole is a much-deserved vacation so it's just Rolando and Eddie Z. And, in order to spare Nicole the trauma of watching eight (8!) different iterations of Supermen across film and television the married duo have taken on the burden of taking on The man of steel. But, unlike the usual high-brow, deep critiques usually found on the show, this week week Rolando and Eddie focus on the most important metric: hotness.

Which Superman soars? Which Superman doesn't even have lift-off? It's time to objectify Superman. Listen now.

Society of the Snow & Alive - How far do we go to survive?06 Mar 202400:57:01

This week, Rolando, Nicole and Eddie delve into the captivating world of survival films, specifically comparing the American film 'Alive' (1993) and the Spanish film 'Society of the Snow' (2023). Both films portray the harrowing real-life events – the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 disaster that occurred in 1972. Our thought-provoking analysis delves into the narrative techniques, cinematography, casting choices, cultural relevance, depiction of real events, and how authenticity is handled in both films.

We start by showcasing the common and divergent elements between these two interpretations of the same event. An intriguing part of our conversation revolves around casting choices: the star-studded 'Alive' versus the relatively unknown faces in 'Society of the Snow.' We ponder upon the impact of actor's fame on the audience's connection to the story, engaging in a lively debate on this aspect of film-making.

We also explore how diversity in film and TV contributes to greater authenticity and representation, and how that resonates with audiences. Our focus then shifts to the portrayal of survivors enduring harsh conditions, drawing comparisons between the cinematic experiences offered by 'Alive' and 'Society of the Snow.'

Lastly, we delve into the anticipated Oscar chances of 'Society of the Snow' and reflect on the possibility of it bagging the Best International Film award. We conclude our episode with detailed narration of climactic scenes and the range of emotions they evoke, inviting our audience to decide which film tells a more compelling and authentic story.

Join us on this captivating journey as we unravel the layers of cinematic masterpieces and the art of storytelling. Perfect for film buffs as well as anyone with a keen interest in Cinema studies.

Winx Club and Fate: A Winx Saga - Flaws Are Fine On Characters, But Don't Make Me Hate Her04 Feb 202101:08:23

"Fate: A Winx Saga" is Netflix's latest "hit." But were you aware the show is a live-action adaptation of "Winx Club?" Nicole certainly wasn't when she first saw the trailer. But when she found out she pitched the show and everyone got to binging. Does she come to regret that decision?

This week, join us as we visit Alfea, a college for fairies who are learning the ways of magic. Not to be confused with Magix, the world it's on. Who or what are the Winx Club? And why has the original series upset fans in recent years?

Then, listen as Rolando and Nicole discuss "Fate: A Winx Saga" and the debate had a larger influence on the show: Harry Potter or the CW? Did Netflix breathe new life into the fairies or does it leave these fairies with no wind beneath their wings?

And lastly, you'll get a chance to hear from a major Winx fan. Ella Anders, authoress and writer for BSCKids, shares her thoughts on Winx Club and her reaction to Fate: A Winx Saga. Today you'll get a snippet of the interview but be sure to listen to her full interview on Monday.

The Animaniacs - Do Not Google "Minerva Mink" on Google Images28 Jan 202101:09:47

"It's time for Animaniacs!" If you were a child in the 90's there's a high probability you read that and sang it. This week, Rolando and Nicole unlock the Warner Tower to visit the adorable Warner brothers and the Warner sister. And, they'll be kiki-ing with Animaniacs experts, Joey and Nathan Letson of The Animanicast, who spill all the tea they've gathered after meeting the show's voice actors, writers, and original creator. Did you know that Steven Spielberg didn't create the Warner Siblings!?

What made this show so memorable and why did it appeal to both kids and adults?

Then, the gang turns its attention to the 2020 Hulu reboot. If it looks like the Animaniacs and sounds like the Animaniacs is it still the Animaniacs? And how do the new batch of episodes compare to its original run?

Listen to find out.

THE ANIMANICAST

We want to extend a huge shout out to Nathan and Joey this week. Be sure to check out their podcast to really do a deep dive into the Animaniacs.
