On the 14th of May, Giada Ragone & Luca Pietro Vanoni (of University of Milan, Italy) gave a lecture with the full title: "Separation between State and Church in Italy: The Constitutional Framework and the Crucifix Case", which provides an overview of the relationship between State and Church in Italy. They focus on the “peculiar” status of the Catholic Church, after which the famous case of the display of crucifixes in classrooms will be treated.

In this lecture, Stephen Bullivant, prof. of Theology and the Sociology of Religion at St. Mary’s University (London), "investigates commonalities among several mainstream denominations in Europe, the Catholic Church in Britain and their significant decline over a half-century. This is true across a wide range of empirical indicators of religious vitality, including Mass attendance, retention/conversion rates, vocations, etc. Precisely when this decline started, and for what reason or reasons, is a subject of intense debate. This lecture will propose a new answer."

I denna föreläsning undersöker Yvonne Maria Werner, professor på historiska institutionen vid Lunds Universitet, hur de traditionalistiska grupperna inom katolska kyrkan håller fast vid den livsform som var gängse fram till mitten av 1960-talet, då Andra vatikankonciliet kom med sina reformer. Detta avsnitt av R&T är avskedsföreläsningen professor Anne-Christine Hornborg höll 21 Maj, 2019, under titeln "Doing the Rite Thing."

Hornborg är professor i religionshistoria med fokus på religionsantropologiska studier, och skrev avhandling, A Landscape of Left-Overs: Changing Conception of Place and Environment among Mi’kmaq Indians of Eastern Canada (2001) som bygger på historisk källforskning och fältarbeten hos kanadensiska mi’kmaqindianer 1992-1993, 1996 och 2000. Hornborg har också fältarbetat på Tongaöarna 1998 och 2001, och i Peru 2004, samt återbesökt mi’kmaqreservaten 2009.

Akademiska intressen rör urbefolkningars kosmologier, animism, naturuppfattningar, antropologen i fält och ekologi och religion, och prof. Hornborg har utvecklat det interdisciplinära ämnet Ritual Studies och forskat om ritteorier och nya rituella praktiker (som nyandlig ”terapi” och ”coachning”) i det senmoderna Sverige. Vidare beskriver Hornborg "ritualstudier som en viktig del i forskning om religion, maktförhållanden, mänsklig erfarenhet och livsvärldar och flera av mina internationella publikationer behandlar ritualer och den rituella praktiken."

This is the last part of the ongoing series where R&T re-podcasts past lectures held by previous honorary doctors at HT-faculties of Lund University.

Robert D. Resnick is a real estate entrepreneur and a philanthropist. He chairs the Ravensbrück campaign of the Lund University Foundation. As you will hear in this lecture, he was an exchange student at Lund University in 1971−72, and has over the years worked for the University in various capacities within the context of the Lund University Foundation.

Resnick’s most important contribution to Lund University involves the digitisation of the Ravensbrück Archive at the University Library. Thanks to his personal contribution and his persistent work in attracting donations to this project, the library has been able to digitise and translate into English large parts of the archive, thereby making it accessible to a wide circle of researchers and a keen general public through a web portal.

In this lecture, Magdalena Dziaczkowska, phd-student at CTR, explores the way in which the Catholic Church in Poland has contributed to the shaping of Polish national identity, safeguarded that notion and conferred a theological meaning on it. It will briefly examine historical circumstances behind this development, and will conclude by pointing to the challenges which the theologization of Polishness poses to the Catholic Church in Poland today.

Arrangerad av Collegium Patristicum Lundense, föreläser forskaren Katarina Pålssons över temat "Hieronymus och framväxten av en monastisk lärmiljö" som är en av flera föredrag dedikerade åt det tidiga latinska klosterväsendet och den syn på bildning, regler och gemenskapsliv som uttrycks av några av dess viktigaste författare. Föredrag hålls av forskarna inom det av RJ finansierade projektet "Auktoritet, samhälle och individuell frihet - det latinska klosterväsendet och rötterna till Europas utbildningsideal".

Katarina Pålsson är forskare i kyrkohistoria vid CTR och besrkiver sig själv på följande vis: "Jag är född 1989 och uppvuxen i Klippan. 2015 tog jag min masterexamen i teologi vid CTR och blev antagen som doktorand i kyrkohistoria. Jag disputerade 2019 med avhandlingen Negotiating Heresy: The Reception of Origen in Jerome’s Eschatological Thought, som behandlade receptionen av den tidigkristne teologen Origenes av Alexandria hos den något senare författaren Hieronymus av Stridon. Avhandlingen belönades med Oscar II:s stipendium 2020, ett pris från Vetenskapssocieteten i Lund 2020, samt Kungliga Vitterhetsakademiens pris för förtjänt vetenskapligt arbete 2021. Jag arbetar nu inom projektet Auktoritet, samhälle och individuell frihet – det latinska klosterväsendet och rötterna till Europas utbildningsideal samt inom forskningsprogrammet At the End of the World: A Transdisciplinary Approach to Apocalyptic Imaginary in the Past and Present, båda finansierade av Riksbankens Jubileumsfond."

In this episode we once again return to past honorary doctors at the HT-faculty at Lund University. Professor Elias Bongmba gave a open lecture during the spring of 2018, with the title "Eschatology and Otherness: Imagining and Anticipating the Future in Africa".

Professor Elias Kifon Bongmba is a theology, religious studies and African studies scholar who works at Rice University in Houston, Texas. His research and teaching covers broad areas and combines theology, religious studies, philosophy and ethnology. His books include philosophical, theological and social analysis of African witchcraft, and discuss public theology as well as the HIVAIDS pandemic in Africa. He is currently working on an extensive introduction to the three major groups of religious tradition in Africa: traditional African religions, Islam and Christianity.

In March of this year, dr. Elisa Uusimäki from Helsinki University gave a presentation at a joint seminar hosted by Religious History, Old and New Testament Studies and Jewish Studies, at CTR, under the title"Wisdom and Torah in Jewish Antiquity: What Can We Learn from the Dead Sea Scrolls?" 

Dr Elisa Uusimäki is a scholar of ancient Jewish literature and holds the title of docent at the University of Helsinki, currently involved in the research project "Conceptions of Virtue in Early Judaism" (2018‐2020). Uusimäki has published on wisdom and torah, the Dead Sea Scrolls, ancient scriptural interpretation, the figure of the sage in antiquity, and exemplarity. Apart from Helsinki, she has studied and conducted research at the University of Manchester, Yale University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.

The seminar focused on the association between wisdom and torah. Their prevalance and relation in the Hebrew Bible and the Septuagint is well‐ known (esp. Deut 4:5–6; Ezra 7:14, 25; Jer 8:8; Pss 1, 19, 119; Sir 24; Bar 3:9–4:4), and scholars have long acknowledged its afterlife in the thought of early Christians who identified Jesus with Logos or Sophia (e.g. John 1, 15; 1 Cor 1:24, 30; Col 1:15‐17, 2:2‐3). The discovery of the Qumran scrolls revealed new materials that illuminate notions of wisdom and torah in early Judaism.

Hartmut Lehmann is a German historian and honorary professor in church history at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel. He has been the director of the German Historical Institute in Washington D.C., and of the Max-Planck Institute for History in Göttingen. Lehmann is a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and member of the Göttingen Academy of Wissenschaften. For a long time, his focus has been on church history, in particular the Reformation and Reformation jubilees, pietism, as well as the church and national socialism. And national socialism is also at the center of the lecture Lehmann gave.

Paula Fredriksen is a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She was made Honorary Doctor at the Faculty of Theology as recognition of the high international standard of her research in religious studies. Professor Fredriksen's research is characterised by an explicit inter- and multidisciplinary perspective. Her research is thus linked to several successful subjects at the Faculty of Theology in Lund - New Testament studies, patristics, Jewish studies and general history of religion just to name a few. Her interest in Paul the apostle and Augustine the Church Father is a common thread throughout her research, from her thesis "Augustine’s Early Interpretations of Paul" (1979) and onward. Fredriksen has also written about Jesus as an historical figure and the early Jesus movement as a branch of Judaism at the time and, furthermore, has sought to spread her research results to the general public.

Trawney studied philosophy, musicology, and history of art in Bochum, Freiburg, Basel, and Wuppertal, and have taught at universities in Shanghai, Vienna, and Stockholm. He currently teaches at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, where he is also the director of the Martin-Heidegger-Institut. He is the editor of several volumes of the Martin-Heidegger-Gesamtausgabe (GA 35, 69, 73, 86, 90, 94–97).

Jayne Svenungsson is Professor of Systematic Theology at Lund University, Sweden.

 Full abstract: "One of the later definitions of Heidegger’s own thinking is: ‘Mytho-Logy of the event of appropriation’. In this sense it is important to understand Heidegger’s own explanations of ‘myth’ and ‘logos’, as we find them at the beginning of the 1930’s. ‘Myth’ is the context in which Heidegger can locate his narrative of the ‘history of Being’. In this ‘history’ the ‘gods’ and the ‘last God’ are playing a leading role. The ‘gods’ and the ‘last God’ (for both Hoelderlin’s poetry is the key) appear as an alternative to Christianity, which is harshly ‘criticized’ in the ‘Black
Notebooks’. ‘Theology’ is replaced by ‘mythology’. My paper wants to unfold the influence of the problem of the ‘myth’ on Heidegger’s thinking including the problem of Bultmann’s ‘demythologization’ and anti-Semitism (Judaism as the death of the ‘myth’ – and as the source for the ‘myth’ of ‘the Jew’)."

In this third episode of the ongoing series on Heidegger and Theology, Hans Ruin (Professor of Philosophy at Södertörn University) discusses Heidegger's interest in early Christianity and St. Paul. 

The abstract to Ruin's presentation in full: 

"I will discuss the idea of a supposedly ‘original Christian’ religious experience as it is developed in Heidegger’s seminal interpretations of Paul in the early 1920’s. In particular, I shall focus on how the problem of tradition and inheritance is thematized in this encounter; the notion of a tradition that is at once cancelled and reinvented in and through this very cancellation. Through Paul and his notion of a ‘destruction’ of tradition, Heidegger finds his own philosophical voice in an early Jewish messianic critique of history. This is one of the partly ‘hidden’ sources of his thinking, that need to be rethought anew in relation to the Black Notebooks and their understanding of Christianity, Judaism and the question of religion generally."

"Much of the content of the Black Books relates to Heidegger's irritation with what he saw as a range of misinterpretations and misappropriations of his work. These include those who see Being and Time as derivative of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche as well as those who try to apply Heidegger's thought to contemporary philosophical issues. He is particularly hostile to Catholic theology, naming Romano Guardini as exemplifying what is wrong in such applications. The paper will explore Heidegger's antipathy in relation to Guardini's own theological-philosophical project with the aim of specifying just what Heidegger saw as the essential point at issue."

This episode is a talk by dr. Hjalmar Falk centered around the infamous German jurist, Carl Schmitt and his conception of political theology, with a particular focus on its implications for the philosophy of history. Central to Schmitt’s thought is the claim that all modern political concepts are secularized theological concepts, a relationship he identified not only between the miracle and the sovereign exception, but also between salvation history and the belief in progress found in modern philosophy of history. This talk will focus on Schmitt’s interpretation of the obscure Pauline figure of the katechon and what his use of this Biblical myth can tell us about Schmittian theory in particular and modern apocalyptic political thought in general.

Hjalmar Falk is a researcher at the Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion (University of Gothenburg).

"This paper gathers all significant remarks on Christianity in the Black Notebooks and analyses them in the context of Heidegger's attitude to religion at the time – which we already know from recent research to have been particularly conflicted during this period. The paper then offers a summary of the ways in which references in the Notebooks change our understanding of Heidegger's view of Christianity during the 1930's, and draw conclusions about Heidegger's continuing relevance to theology. In particular, the Notebooks reveal greater continuity between Heidegger and the secularized Christian hopes of the 19th century than Being and Time suggests, and so challenge the confidence with which some theologians have hoped to find a radically new approach to faith and theology in Heidegger's thought."

I detta första avsnitt från serien, inspelat i mitten av hösten 2018, får vi ta del av en presentation av Simon Sorgenfrei & boken "Islam i Sverige - de första 1300 åren" på det religionsvetenskapliga seminariet. Syftet med presentationen är att synliggöra luckor i tidigare forskning. 

Avsnittet avslutas lite abrupt, då seminariedeltagare efter den initiala presentationen lät tillfället övergå till en något mer intensiv dialogform, där det helhetsperspektiv som präglar inledningen öppnade för mindre sammanhängande tankespår, som också följdes upp av kortare sektioner och samtal.

Teologiska fakulteten utsåg 2017 professor emerita Eva Österberg till Anders Nygrenpristagare. Dagens avsnitt är en återpublicering av Österbergs föreläsning vid mottagandet av detta pris. Forskare och dåvarande biträdande prefekten för CTR, Johanna Gustafsson Lundberg, introducerar föreläsningen (som går att se här).

Eva Österberg är en av landets mest framstående historiker. Hon har starkt bidragit till att svenska historiker från 1990-talet och framåt återupptäckt religionens roll i historien. I åtskilliga böcker har hon öppnat det förflutnas existentiella dimensioner. Religionens, och kanske särskilt den lutherska teologins inflytande på de tidigmoderna mentaliteterna behandlas i flera av hennes verk. Som flitigt anlitad handledare i forskarutbildningen har hon handlett uppmärksammade forskningsprojekt som belyser kyrkans inverkan på mentalitet och samhälle under medeltid och tidigmodern tid. Österberg har också intresserat sig för den forskning som bedrivs vid CTR och hennes forskning har inspirerat lärare och doktorander vid institutionen.

In this final episode from Religion in Praxis of this year, Professor Mikhail Suslov takes us deep into an ideological moment and situation named Putinism. In a world where the interplay of ideology, religion, and national identity shapes the contours of global politics, understanding the dynamics of Putinism and the role of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) in contemporary Russia poses a fundamental challenge to European security. The questions posed in a recent interview with Professor Suslov go to the heart of these dynamics, exploring the motivations, influences, and implications of Putinism as Russia's third official ideology, and the relationship between the ROC and the state. Central to this exploration is an examination of the genesis of Putinism: is it a reactive construct, primarily a shield against perceived external threats, or is it an introspective quest for national identity and unity? This question sets the stage for a broader examination of the ideology's foundations and its resonance among the Russian populace and intellectual elite. The discussion then shifts to the significant influence of the Orthodox Church on Putinism, exploring how the Church shapes the ideology's core values and messianic narratives, as well as its impact on Russian society through various social institutions. Unlike Marxism-Leninism, Putinism lacks a clear utopian vision, raising questions about its effectiveness and appeal both domestically and internationally. This leads to an examination of Putinism's adaptability and potential evolution in response to domestic and international challenges, including its effectiveness as a cognitive prism through which the Russian population interprets its place in the world and current global dynamics. The interview also explores the inherent contradictions within Putinism that may limit its longevity or effectiveness as a guiding ideology. In the twenty-fifth episode of the Conversations Series, our host Tornike Metreveli brings up the following questions, in relation to the recent publication of Orthodox Christianity and the COVID-19 Pandemic (Routledge, 2023): In an unprecedented global crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, how do Orthodox Christian churches reconcile their age-old practices with the urgent mandates of public health and safety? This is the central question at the heart of this book and our episode. The aim is to investigate the interactions between Orthodox Christianity, a faith deeply intertwined with tradition and rituals, and the extraordinary demands of a global pandemic. The scope of this book includes a comprehensive examina-tion of how these intersections have affected the practices, beliefs, and community dynamics within Orthodox Christianity. This manuscript primarily provides a deep-dive into the churning turmoil that unfolded as COVID-19 embarked on its grim trajectory, radically altering the world’s social practices. In this vortex of change, Orthodox Christianity, steeped in a cultural landscape of tradition, encountered a unique kaleidoscope of challenges and paradoxes. The church, traditionally a sanctuary of solace for Orthodox Christians, found itself precariously balanced on the knife-edge of a conundrum, requiring adaptability and transformation in unprecedented ways. With global chaos whirling around them, believers sought solace within the comforting walls of the church. This underscored the faith's crucial role as an anchor amidst stormy seas of uncertainty. However, navigating the turbulent waters raised provocative questions: how did the Orthodox churches adapt age-old rituals in the face of socially distanced mandates necessitated by the pandemic? How did Orthodox Christians reconcile their fervent religious beliefs and practices with the stringent health mandates laid down by their governments?

Dagens avsnitt av R&T spelades in inför publik på CTR, kvällen den 23:e oktober 2023, och utgör höstterminens andra delen av samtalsserien "Religion och Existens." Tillsammans med samtalsledarna forskarna Lovisa Nyman och Erik Sidenvall för vi följa med på ett samtal med prof. emeritus, Sven-Eric Liedman, om åldrande. Liedman var inte bara professor i idé och lärdomshistoria vid Göteborgs universitet under många år, utan har även varit flitig skribent av olika typer av böcker och texter, till exempel I skuggan av framtiden (1997) och Ett oändligt äventyr (2001). Frihetens herrar, frihetens knektar (1982) och Att se sig själv i andra (1999). I fokus för kvällens samtal var senaste verket, I november: om åldrandet (2022). Liedman säger själv om boken: "Många har skrivit om ålderdomen. Sällan är de över åttio; det vanligaste är sextio eller däromkring. Då skriver man inte riktigt inifrån utan föreställer sig snarare hur det är att bli äldre. Den som är åttio eller mer än redan rutinerad som pensionär. Inte för att man vet hur alla andra har det. Det jag kan göra är att avlägga ett personligt vittnesbörd om hur det kan vara att bli gammal".

In the twenty-fourth episode of the Conversations Series, our host Tornike Metreveli is joined by Professor Oliver Scharbrodt to unpack the ethical, legal, and societal ramifications of Quran burnings in Sweden. As a nation celebrated for its commitment to free speech and multiculturalism, Sweden finds itself at the intersection of a daunting dilemma. The provocative act of Quran burning by far-right activists challenges the country's stance between upholding free speech and maintaining religious tolerance. The episode explores three central themes: the historical antecedents of religious text desecration, the motivations behind such polarizing acts within the larger European context, and the tensions between freedom of expression, religious tolerance, and societal cohesion. The episode seeks to explore how a liberal democracy reconciles its founding principles with the imperative of societal harmony. The conversation aims to illuminate the broader implications for ongoing debates about secularism, multiculturalism, and religious freedom not only in Sweden, but across Europe.

Dagens avsnitt av R&T spelades in inför publik på CTR, kvällen den 21:e september 2023, och är höstterminens första delen av samtalsserien "Religion och Existens." Tillsammans med samtalsledarna forskarna Frida Mannerfelt och Svante Lundgren stod Anita Goldman i centrum som kvällens hedersgäst. Goldman är sedan flera decennier verksam som författare, journalist, debattör och kolumnist, och har genom åren varit en viktig samhällsröst i Sverige. Hennes texter handlar ofta om kvinnors roll i historien och i religionen. Böcker som "Våra bibliska mödrar" (1988) och "Guds älskarinnor". "Om hängivna kvinnor i en livrädd värld" (2005) är exempel på hur Goldman engagerat och sakligt bearbetar kvinnors ställning i religionen. Goldman profilerar i sitt författarskap ett välgrundat engagemang för fred i Mellanöstern och deltar i den offentliga debatten om vikten av historisk kunskap och religiös litteralitet när antisemitiska tendenser smyger sig in, och hon kombinerar sitt engagemang med sitt tydliga ställningstagande för kvinnor, framför allt mödrar, i historien. Med tiden har Goldmans författarskap tagit en allt tydligare inriktning mot andlighet, inte minst i boken "Om stenarna kunde tala i Palma de Mallorca" (2019).  Dagens avsnitt kretsade särskilt kring böckerna "Guds älskarinnor" (2006) samt "Ljusbärarna" (2012).

In this episode of the Conversations Series, a final discussion takes place with the renowned award-winning sociologist Professor Liah Greenfeld. With a host Tornike Metreveli, Liah Greenfeld discusses key arguments from Greenfeld's  book, "The Spirit of Capitalism." Greenfeld delves into a central question once explored by Max Weber: What truly drives sustained economic growth? Tracing the economic consciousness across nations such as England, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States, Greenfeld presents a compelling case that the force behind growth-centric economies is not mere rational economic action, but the profound influence of nationalism. This insatiable quest for national prestige becomes the catalyst for economic competitiveness. Taking the U.S. as a case in point, Greenfeld illustrates how economic advancement has become almost indistinguishable from national pride. This conflation, while spurring relentless economic achievement, also creates a society of workaholics questioning their relentless pursuits and, at times, misguiding foreign policy objectives.

Detta avsnitt av R&T är en återpublicering av Stephan Borgehammars, professor i praktisk teologi vid Centrum för teologi och religionsvetenskap, föredraget "Framtiden förr: medeltida tidshantering och tanken på världens ände." Föredraget, som ursprungligen hölls på de så kallade "Ht-dagarna" vid Lunds universitet 2017, undersöker medeltida tidshantering och tanken på världens ände Föredraget använder bilder och texter förknippade med adventstiden för att ge inblickar i hur medeltidens människor såg på tiden och på sin egen plats i historien. Det visar sig att advent i sin funktion som förberedelsetid för julen gav utrymme åt en vision av hela världshistoriens skepnad och innebörd. I senmedeltida predikningar från adventstiden tas också världens ände upp, med målande skildringar av den yttersta domen jämte ingående analyser av bibeltexter. Kan till exempel Matteusevangeliets tal om att stjärnorna ska falla ner från himlen förenas med astronomisk vetenskap?
