| E72 - Dr. Suzy Pinnick Explores Pediatric Palliative Pot (Re-Hash) | 26 Nov 2024 | 00:41:03 | |
Dr. Suzy Pinnick, a family physician specializing in palliative medicine and remote northern medicine, shares her cannabis story with Kirk. In this episode, the two health professionals sit in a casual masked conversation within the warmth of the NIC’s office of a northern nursing station during a deep Covid19 Canadian winter evening. She is quick to say she has very little knowledge of cannabis, yet believes it is important to learn. When she was asked by parents to prescribe cannabis for one of her pediatric palliative care patients, Dr. Pinnick quickly recognized how little she knew. Kirk brings the story to Trevor, how this experienced doctor is willing to learn as she practices; how she learns the art of medicine while applying the formal duties of a doctor. | E135 – Shiva Dances within Buddha’s Garden | 19 Nov 2024 | 01:17:19
Regular users of cannabis will – often self-consciously – admit to having a spiritual relationship with cannabis. Will Johnson, a teacher of Buddhist Dharma since 1972, explains how he is ‘something of an anomaly and outlier when it comes to the use of cannabis.’ In his book “Cannabis in Spiritual Practice: The Ecstasy of Shiva, The Calm of Buddha,” Will applies his understandings with living by The Buddhist’s precepts, as an adult. He believes his positive pathways toward full Embodiment is better achieved when he weaves his dance with Shiva, while enjoying the fruits of Buddha’s Garden. In this episode, Kirk and Trevor conclude Will may be onto something. What if everyone in the world simply took a few deep breathes, passed the chillum, and spontaneously started to dance? | E64 - Driving Under the Influence with Dr. Tom Arkell | 09 Feb 2021 | 00:53:16
Vaporize Cannabis. Get behind the wheel of a car. Pull out onto the highway. This is not the beginning of an accident report. This is a study Dr. Tom Arkell and team ran on an actual highway in the Netherlands. Dr. Arkell is from Australia, his research is partially supported by the Lambert Iniative and the driving was done near Maastricht University. The study looked at CBD vs THC vs a combo of THC/CBD vs placebo. You definitely want to listen to this multinational study if just to hear what "placebo cannabis" is. | E63 - Craft Cannabis Panel | 26 Jan 2021 | 01:14:59
Is it the future? Kirk and Trevor delve into the craft cannabis market, again. In this episode, they gather a unique panel of Cannabis enthusiasts, willing to share their views on growing small batches of their best. A British Columbia computer geek turned owner, an Alberta legacy grower gone legit, and a Manitoba seed archivist waiting on a license for his genetics, each speak to what makes their cannabis strains and techniques important to creating a craft cannabis market place. The panel agrees the best fertilizer is the shadow of the gardener and any licenced producer can grow good weed. But, what is their collective agreement, what is the definitive determination of craft cannabis? It may depend on how they treat their flowers at harvest, or possibly the hang-to-dry or lay-to-dry technique. How long do they leave their flower to cure? What if the flower is traveling in plastic to market? Defining craft cannabis may actually mean buying straight from the farmer but, this is not possible yet. Have a listen to how these growers define craft while creating niche markets for their small businesses. | E62 - Hybrid Pharm Redux - Rahim Dhalla | 12 Jan 2021 | 00:44:40
One of the reason Reefer MEDness started was becasuse Trevor couldn't understand why medicinal cannabis wasn't in pharmacies. Well, all the barriers aren't down yet but meet Rahim Dhalla. We've talked to Rahim before, but this time we dive into the workings of his pharmacy, Hybrid Pharm. Hybrid Pharm is a regular pharmacy where you can pick up your diabetes meds, get your flu shot and lately they are even doing COVID-19 testing. But Hybrid Pharm is special for many reasons. Not the least of which is, if all the paperwork is in place, you can walk into Hybrid Pharm and pick up your medicinal cannabis. Welcome to the future, as Kirk and Trevor talk with Rahim about how this all works.

| E61 - One Less Nurse - Paul Martin | 30 Dec 2020 | 01:20:37 | |
In this episode we explore a series of unfortunate events started when a Registered Nurse decided to illegally grow cannabis as medicine. Society may consider nurses one of our most trustworthy groups however, employers and professional colleges have policies and procedures suggesting otherwise because the profession is plagued with addiction issues. This episode explores what happens when a nurse self-medicates using cannabis and is seen as having an addiction issue. There is a mismatch in understanding needs and medicine. Kirk and Trevor wonder if this is one of those stories where Cannabis is misunderstood and due to this lack of understanding, we are left with one less nurse.

| E58 - Greenly Heath with Dr. Blake Pearson | 17 Nov 2020 | 00:57:53 | |
Many family docs spend part of their time looking after patients in long term care homes. Two of the most common conditions in long term care are chronic pain and dementia. We don't have great options in the standard pharmaceutical tool box to treat either of these conditions. What if I told you a family doc in Sarnia, Ontario is having so much success treating both chronic pain and dementia symptoms in long term care that his colleagues are referring patients to him? Dr. Blake Pearson is treating chronic pain, dementia symptoms, autism symptoms and others with cannabis. His expertise is in such demand that he teaches other doctors how to use cannabis successfully in their practice. Come have a listen.

Dr. Mohan Cooray is a specialist in internal medicine, gastroenterology, hepatology, and advanced endoscopy. After graduating from the University of Toronto’s Life Sciences program with the highest distinction, he was accepted into the prestigious Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University and was recognized for his achievements with the Outstanding Gastroenterology Resident Award in 2015. Dr. Cooray was quickly recruited for a highly coveted position at the Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto, where he worked with patients undergoing treatment for digestive diseases. Internists are doctor's doctors; they are all about the evidence. And Dr. Cooray did not start out believing cannabis was a reasonable treatment for his patients. | E56 - Prenatal Cannabis Exposure #2 – Dr. Mishka Terplan | 09 Oct 2020 | 01:16:03
Is cannabis something to fear when it comes to prenatal health? The easy answer is yes, when we consider the universally acceptable care plan of all pregnancies are best lived following a healthy diet, doing appropriate exercise, and consuming no unnecessary drugs or medications. With cannabis becoming more widely used as a medicine and consumed recreationally by a growing population, it is important to fully understand how cannabis affects human development and family health. In their second episode discussing Prenatal Cannabis Exposure, Kirk and Trevor explore the implications of cannabis use in pregnancies with Virginia Commonwealth University’s Dr. Mishka Terplan of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Psychiatry. It may surprise you to discover how care giver behaviours and social policy may actually be more harmful to a family’s health and wellbeing than the mother using cannabis during pregnancy. What does current research actually say about the threat of prenatal cannabis exposure to the unborn child? How can understanding the bigger picture of women and family health help change our current policies on prenatal health?

| E55 - Greencraft Cannabis with Mr. Greening | 23 Sep 2020 | 00:48:59 | |
How do we define “Craft Cannabis” in Canada? Greencraft Cannabis, a local Manitoba grow operation, is out to answer this question. Eric Greening discusses the process of obtaining his Health Canada micro cultivation licence and how his new company will grow smaller batches putting the plant first. Not only has Health Canada created opportunity for smaller craft growers to finally legally enter the cannabis space, these new licences have also fashioned economic development opportunities for rural communities. Kirk and Trevor question whether the path craft cannabis businesses follow will be similar to the craft beer industry? They ponder how large growers will compete with this new craft market place. This episode marks the start of a planned series exploring the question above.

What were you doing during the start of the pandemic lock down? Did you build a puzzle for the first time in year? Did you get reacquainted with how stupid and long and frustrating monopoly is? How about sour dough bread? Did you make your first sour dough? Dr. Igor Kovalchuk and his wife, Dr. Olga Kovalchuk from the University of Lethbridge were locked out of their labs too. Their lock down side project was a little more ambitious. They had been researching hundreds of cannabis extracts to see if these extracts reduced inflammation and might help treat conditions like multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis. During this forced pause in their research, they wondered in CBD rich cannabis extracts might be useful against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. You want to hear what they found out.

| E52 - Prenatal Cannabis Exposure – Dr. Ciara Torres | 09 Jul 2020 | 00:54:36 | |
Let us start by saying, we encourage pregnant women toward balanced diets, proper exercise, and we discourage unnecessary drug and alcohol use. But, what if a mother consumes cannabis during pregnancy? In this episode Kirk and Trevor begin to explore prenatal cannabis exposure and are joined by Dr. Ciara Torres, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Columbia University. This neuroscientists near six-year meta-analysis found prenatal use of cannabis does not lead to cognitive impairment of children. Dr. Torres discusses how her study, published May 2020, offers policy makers a better understanding of how cannabis affects newborns. Often babies are removed from a family when it is discovered a mother used cannabis during the pregnancy; this action may actually be more harmful than the exposure. Proper prenatal care is paramount when predicting the future success of an unborn child. This episode is designed to start the debate, so have a listen and offer your feedback by sending us a note to podcast@reefermed.ca

| E51 - Songs In The Key Of Weed with John Einarson | 12 Jun 2020 | 00:54:14 | |
The fact marijuana heightens the musical experience is no secret. We know both listeners and players have enhanced their musical experiences through the use of this plant for over 100 years. This episode links cannabis to music through the stories told by acclaimed musicologist John Einarson. We follow a path of early jazz players influencing Canadian singer-song-writer Ian Tyson, who in turn influenced Bob Dylan, who in turn influenced The Beatles, to produce their iconic cannabis inspired album Rubber Soul. Einarson, author of 14 biographies of various musicians, tells stories with weed-inspired songs weaving through his deep narrative, as we learn how musicians created some of our most iconic songs under the influence of cannabis. Some very important pot smoking entertainers are discussed, such as Barbara Streisand sharing reefer with Peter Sellers and Neil Young testifying for his brother during a marijuana trial. Although cannabis is a very popular mind-altering substance used by musicians, Einarson believes it may actually pale compared to other psychedelic substances used in the industry. But that is another story for another episode. For now, this is a highly-entertaining episode produced, unlike any other from the ReeferMEDness team

In this episode we learn how the clouds preventing Ted from flying high are not simply from his new smoking lounge but rather the various levels of bureaucracy he must manage when putting compassion into action. Her academic journey, of supporting people and health care providers with engaging in shared decision-making related to complementary and integrative health care, includes some of Canada’s earliest cannabis research. The scholastic chronicles, of this Doctor Nurse, speaks to how we can never truly plan our life path, but we do have the power to be properly prepared for opportunity. | E47 - David Crosby: Mighty Croz | 21 Mar 2020
“David Crosby, I read your chart man” is how Kirk starts his long-awaited chat with one of pop-culture’s most notorious Cannabis influencers. In 50-years, David Crosby has had a very public relationship with cannabis, addictions, incarceration, and relationships, which he willingly discusses. With thoughtful understanding that these past behaviours are well reported elsewhere, Kirk digs into current events asking his guest to speak to his new relationship with legal and medicinal cannabis. They discuss his involvement with NORML, his “Mighty Croz” branding, focusing mostly on his medical uses of cannabis; they even exchange their wives’ cookie recipe and how cannabis has become a very calculated element of David Crosby’s day-to-day creative life-style.

And it is harder than you'd think. If you don't immediately get the hemp buds off the field and start drying and curing them in a couple hours, all the CBD is destroyed by composting. Ian Mitchell is an emergency physician, the Site Scholar for the Kamloops Family Medicine Residency Program and is occasionally photographed teaching whole rooms full of people to stick their fingers in their ears while opening their mouths really wide like they are in a silent scream. He caught our interest with an article and talk he did about gabapentin vs cannabis. Gabapentin was originally developed as a seizure medication, but it wasn't really good at that. Now it is routinely used for migraines, back pain, diabetic nerve pain and a variety of other conditions. There isn't great evidence for gabapentin and all its uses. Cannabis is just gaining the evidence it needs to show it is good for all different types of pain and other conditions. But it is still shunned by mainly clinicians. Is it fair the gabapentin is commonly used and cannabis is not? Kirk and Trevor discuss cannabis-related workplace issues with the world’s largest advocacy group for small businesses. After one year of legalization, the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses (CFIB) surveyed their 110,000 members discovering 10,000 Canadian small business owners have confronted cannabis-related issues. As the discussion digs deep into the survey numbers we learn much of the hype promoted before legalization did not materialize yet, small business owners are still dealing with employees smelling of cannabis, poor government-offered educational opportunities, and defining impairment. Ryan Mallough, the director of Provincial Affairs for Ontario, explains how CFIB normally lobbies government for better taxes, laws, regulations, and how his organization has become the primary source of cannabis education for many of their members.

| S3E08 Pastors, Pot, And Prophets | 30 May 2019 | ||
Did Jesus die on the cross? Was Moses influenced by cannabis when speaking to the Lord? Are Christian Churches embracing Cannabis? First up we meet the founding member of Christian Cannabis, Craig Gross. Once known as the “Porn Pastor,” Gross has a new message for Christian leaders. We learn how cannabis facilitated his personal journey and how he came to a cross roads. Gross once focused on helping porn-addicted Christians kick their habit. Now he is focused on how Christians can be healed by this ancient plant. Next we explore the origins of cannabis. Researcher Chris Bennett connects cannabis to world religion and how it spread from one culture to another. He speaks to how biblical Prophets, Knights Templars, and the Messiah himself, were connected to cannabis by reframing our trusted biblical stories. Bennett says cannabis has been part of human history from the beginning. The legalization of cannabis demands philosophical discussions and these two guests bring a deep conversion to what may be our most controversial episode yet.

You don't give cannabis products to children, right? Or what about that Charolette's Web stuff for seizures? Dr. Robert Sealey is a physician from Victoria with extensive cannabis experience. He see children and has recommended cannabis for some of them. From ADHD, to childhood schizophrenia, to Dravet syndrome this wide ranging conversation covers many pediatric cannabis topics. Come learn with Kirk and Trevor about kids and cannabis. Are three year olds different from thirteen year olds? And don't forget the chocolate milk! It's all about the chocolate milk.
