On July 22nd, 2013, a customer pulled up to a mechanic’s home in Jonesville, South Carolina, and found the door standing open... Inside, Charles “Butch” Parker and his wife, Gretchen, had been shot and stabbed. A number of dogs stood guard over their bodies, there were no witnesses, and the sheriff had no leads...

But Butch had put up a sign that read “Smile, you’re on camera,” and three cameras had been rolling. The footage showed a staged car breakdown, a 10 minute conversation in the yard, and a man with “skinhead” tattooed beneath his chin walking towards the house with a gun.

Within 2 days, deputies had the couple in custody and one of them calmly admitted what they'd done, and why. Then, in court, they apologised, asked the judge for mercy and quoted scripture. Minutes later however, outside the courthouse, one of them called the killings “the best day of my life.” So who was the man they chose, and what did his wife have to do with any of it?

On Tuesday the 18th of February 2014, 20 year old hairdresser Hollie Gazzard went to work at a salon in the centre of Gloucester with one instruction for her colleagues: if her ex-boyfriend, Asher Maslin, turned up, call the police straight away.

3 days earlier, Hollie had rung 999 herself, telling officers he had threatened to beat her and throw acid in her face. Since then, police had tried to arrest him twice, but failed. Hollie was a talented, much-loved stylist with big plans, including opening her own salon one day. Behind the scenes, though, she had spent a year being controlled, threatened and attacked by a man whose history of violence was only partly known to the people who could have stopped him.

In this episode, we trace the relationship, the warnings that were already on record, and the call that should have changed everything. Because shortly before 6pm that evening, the salon door opened. And what happened next would trigger a police inquiry, a homicide review, and a question that still divides Hollie’s family and the authorities: could her death have been prevented?

It's morning at the bus stand in Hassan, in south India. A 22 year old woman is standing at a bus stop… next to the man she thinks she's about to marry.

He hands her a small pill. He tells her it's a contraceptive... she should go into the ladies' toilet and take it there, with a bit of water from the tap.

So she does. And while she's in there, he walks away.

He goes back to the lodge where they spent the night, picks up the jewellery she left in the room, and gets on a bus home.

The pill was cyanide.

It's just before midnight in Walthamstow, East London, and a group of neighbours are standing at a front door.

They've heard arguing. They've seen it spill out onto the communal green. So they ring the doorbell, and they ask again and again, “Are you okay? Do you need help?”

The woman thanks them. Tells them she's fine, and so the group then go home.

At 3am however, it starts again. This time, a neighbour presses record on their phone and dials 999. And inside the flat, the woman at the centre of it is holding up a phone of her own. Alana Odysseos is filming too. But within the hour, that recordinge would be gone. The phone thrown down a drain, by the man who walked out of that flat and into a café, covered in blood.

It's the 24th of January, 2023. It's just snowed in Duxbury, Massachusetts, a seaside suburb on the around 35 miles outside of Boston. On the 8th of May 2019, 15 year old Riley Crossman was reported missing from her home in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. What followed was a desperate community-wide search involving hundreds of volunteers, law enforcement and the FBI, as Riley’s family waited for any sign that she might still be alive. On the morning of January 27th, 2015, inside one of South Africa's most secure gated estates, a family was slaughtered in their beds. Martin, Theresa, and Rudi Van Breda were found dead - axed to death in a scene investigators called one of the most brutal they'd ever encountered. 16 year old Marli survived with catastrophic head injuries and no memory of that night. And the fourth family member, Henri, walked away with only minor cuts.

He was the man every study-abroad student wanted on their trip - charismatic, always around, always at the party. Manuel Blanco Vela ran a wildly popular tour company for American college students exploring Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Parents thought their kids were in safe hands. They weren't.

This episode follows Gabrielle, a 19 year old student who was drugged and sexually assaulted by her own tour guide on what was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime ... and who, years later, would open a Facebook message that changed everything: "Manuel Blanco Vela killed my daughter."

That message came from Carrie, whose 21 year old daughter Lauren supposedly fell ten stories to her death from Manuel's apartment balcony in 2015 - on the same night he took two heavily intoxicated students home alone. Lauren's blood alcohol was nearly at coma level. Manuel's was 0. The case was closed with no charges. Carrie spent the rest of her life fighting for answers.

We're unpacking the pattern - the champagne, the "safety" warnings that kept women isolated with him, the sangria nights, the blackouts - and how one survivor's spreadsheet, one viral post, and one TODAY show interview cracked open a case involving somewhere between 50 and 100 accusers across at least 3 countries.

But here's what you need to know before you hit play: the man convicted of these crimes is not currently in prison. His appeal is still pending. He's out, passport surrendered, waiting on a ruling that could come any time in the next year - which means, right now, nobody actually knows how this ends.

On the 1st of May, 1984, 45 year old Anthony Littler stepped off the train at East Finchley Underground station after a night out with friends who shared his love of real ale. It should have been an ordinary walk home. Instead, minutes later, he lay dying on a dark footpath just meters from the station... attacked by two men lurking in the vegetation, armed with a rounders bat. What followed was a chillingly precise crime and an emergency call that made no sense.

In November 2022, 55 year old Leroy Fowler was rushed to hospital after suddenly becoming violently ill inside the home he shared with his girlfriend, Judy Church. In November 2024, social workers, police, and the family court system were all focused on one vulnerable 14 month old boy: Oakley Barnett. His mother, Emma Barnett, had already lost care of her previous children, and a final court decision was about to determine whether Oakley would also be removed from her custody. In September 2011, 35 year old Shawndell McLeod vanished without a trace after ending a turbulent relationship with her ex-girlfriend, Joyce Pelzer. In October 2023, a woman repeatedly called 999 with a chilling confession: she said she had killed someone.

But there was a problem.

She wouldn’t say who the victim was. She wouldn’t reveal exactly where the murder had happened. And despite calling emergency services multiple times over a period of weeks, police were left trying to piece together fragments of a story that barely made sense.

The woman was 52 year old Anne-Marie Burrows.

At first, officers had no body, no confirmed crime scene, and no clear way of knowing whether the calls were genuine, intoxicated ramblings or the confession of a real killer. But when Anne-Marie finally phoned police again and revealed the name of the victim - 56 year old Royal Navy veteran Paul Knowles - investigators would uncover a scene so violent that even seasoned professionals struggled with the brutality of what had happened inside a flat in Peterborough.

Paul had served more than two decades in the Royal Navy, including during the Gulf War. He was a father, a brother, and someone described by loved ones as dependable, kind and deeply loved. So how did a night spent drinking with someone he considered a friend end in tragedy?

Anne-Marie claimed she acted in self-defence. She said fear, trauma and panic drove what happened next. But as forensic evidence emerged and the full extent of Paul’s injuries was revealed in court, prosecutors argued something very different.

In the spring and summer of 1993, fear quietly moved through London’s gay community - although, at first, hardly anyone realised a serial killer was already hunting in plain sight.

He wasn’t lurking in alleyways. He wasn’t breaking into homes. Instead, he walked into pubs, struck up conversations, bought drinks, flirted, and blended in. In August 2017, just hours before Hurricane Harvey unleashed devastation across Texas, 37 year old mother of 2 Crystal McDowell vanished without a trace.

In February 2000, Christine Chappel disappeared from their home in the quiet Essex village of Roxwell. At first, no one realised anything was wrong. But that all changed when a dog walker on a beach made a discovery that would leave investigators stunned.

A body had washed ashore near Kessingland. It was naked, wrapped in heavy chains, secured with padlocks, and weighed down with gym equipment in what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to ensure it would never be found. When police finally identified the victim as Christine Chappel, questions immediately began to mount. Was this murder? Suicide? Or something far more complicated?

As detectives retraced Christine’s final days, they uncovered a life marked by upheaval, personal struggles, and identity. Born Bryan Hooley, Christine had transitioned in the 1990s, navigating life as a transgender woman during a period where trans experiences were rarely understood or represented. Sakia Gunn was a 15 year old girl from Newark, New Jersey, whose life was taken in the early hours of the 11th of May 2003.

This episode follows the case as we unpack the final moments of Sakia’s life, the confrontation at a Newark bus stop that changed everything, and the devastating moments that followed. We explore the investigation into her murder, the arrest of the lead suspect, and the legal questions surrounding hate crime legislation in the early 2000s. We also look at the wider social context of the case... what it meant to be a young Black lesbian teenager in 2003, the realities of navigating identity at a time of far less acceptance, and how Sakia’s death sparked outrage, activism, and lasting calls for change.

But what happened to Sakia Gunn didn’t end at that bus stop… and the questions her death raised are still being asked more than 20 years later.

In February 1977, a routine morning at a mortgage office in downtown Indianapolis would erupt into one of the most chilling hostage situations ever captured on camera.

What began as a dispute over land, debt, and frustration between a borrower and a mortgage company quickly spiralled into something far more dangerous… when Tony Kiritsis walked into Meridian Mortgage armed, prepared, and carrying something he called a “Dead Man’s Line.”

What followed was a 63-hour standoff that unfolded in plain sight. Through office hallways, across city streets, and eventually into the heart of downtown Indianapolis - all while a terrified hostage was forced to stay inches away from a loaded weapon rigged with a homemade trigger mechanism designed to fire if anything went wrong.

Police followed closely behind, but every attempt to intervene risked turning a hostage situation into an instant execution. News crews arrived quickly, and what they captured would turn this case into something almost unthinkable… a real-time crisis broadcast as it unfolded.

In December 1991, 4 teenage girls - Jennifer Harbison, Sarah Harbison, Amy Ayers, and Eliza Thomas - were brutally murdered inside an Austin yogurt shop after closing time, in one of the most horrifying crimes in Texas history. Bound, shot execution-style, sexually assaulted, and left inside a store deliberately set on fire, the case shocked the nation and launched a decades-long investigation filled with controversy, mistakes, and unanswered questions.

Police eventually arrested 4 young men, with 2, Michael Scott and Robert Springsteen, convicted after giving confessions they later claimed were coerced. As forensic insight, conflicting evidence, and allegations of aggressive interrogation tactics came to light, the case began to unravel.

Some 911 calls are disturbing.

In January 2008, 26 year old Kadie Major and her 10 month old daughter, River Lynn, were found dead near train tracks off Oakley Road in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Authorities quickly ruled it a murder-suicide.

Investigators claimed Kadie had been struggling with postpartum depression, that she had killed her daughter before stepping in front of a train, and within days, that explanation became official... before toxicology results were returned, before the autopsy report was finalised, and before key questions had been fully explored.

But from the very beginning, Kadie’s family didn’t believe it. In the hours before she disappeared, Kadie had been making plans, sharing the news she was expecting a baby boy, and speaking with loved ones. That same night, her husband reported that she had run from the house in fear, convinced someone was coming to kill her... but discouraged the family from calling police.

By the next morning, the search ended in tragedy.

As the investigation unfolded, details began to surface that didn’t sit right. Her truck was found abandoned but completely undamaged, her wedding rings had been removed and placed in her pocket, there was a handwritten note filled with fragmented religious and apocalyptic phrases, and a timeline that raised more questions than answers.

Years later, with a PI on the case and following national attention from CBS’s 48 Hours, the case was reopened.

Investigators publicly stated they no longer believed Kadie’s death was a suicide... and named her husband as the sole suspect.

At 16 years old, Sasha decided she wanted to try and make a bit of extra money in her spare time. She thought she’d lucked out when she got a message on Facebook offering her a job working at a nearby hotel in Blackpool as a cleaner.

Initially, Sasha’s mum and dad were a bit hesitant to let her go. She’d been through a pretty turbulent time through her teenage years but she was finally starting to settle down and started focusing on her future.

And so, both her mum and dad said she could go- but on one condition; her dad would take her there and pick her up after her first shift to ensure she was safe.

But it wasn’t that first shift they needed to be concerned about.

It was the second shift, after they assumed Sasha would be safe, that she would suffer a brutal fate -and the perpetrator had practiced just 3 weeks before. So he knew exactly what he needed, to make sure Sasha would never escape.
