Reasonable Hope â Daily Reflections for math
Hi, this is Dave. Welcome to Reasonable Hope.
We live in a world that often feels divided and fragile. Many of us have experienced that personally, either through loss, broken relationships, difficult seasons, or simply the weight of everyday life. If weâre honest, hope can sometimes feel out of reach.
And yet, through all of lifeâs ups and downs, one thing has remained steady for me is hope. Not wishful thinking, but a hope grounded in reason.
This podcast is our invitation to share that journey with you.
These reflections are an attempt to help us all better search for truth and find hope along the way. Theyâre also about asking better questions, questions that challenge how we think and open us to new ways of seeing. This is a creative space, one that encourages you to listen to your questions, to pay attention to your doubts, and not let those voices be silenced.
We often draw from math not as abstract ideas, but as lenses that reveal deeper patterns in life, helping us move forward with clarity and courage.
If trying harder hasnât led to lasting change, maybe seeing differently can. Our approach invites your mind, heart, and soulâengaging the full human experience.
Reasonable Hope is a short daily podcast designed to help you begin your day with perspective, curiosity, and grounded hope.
We also have a Reasonable Hope for Philosophy that you may access here.

The Hidden Assumptions Behind Certainty
Season 1 ¡ Episode 1
lundi 4 mai 2026 ⢠Duration 04:27
Math seems to offer certaintyâbut it also teaches us to question it. A simple question like âWhat is 10 + 3?â reveals how answers can change when assumptions change. Sometimes disagreement isnât faulty reasoning, but different starting points.
Question: Where might I be arguing over answers instead of understanding how we got there?
The Courage to Question Assumptions
Season 1 ¡ Episode 2
mardi 5 mai 2026 ⢠Duration 04:27
For centuries, Euclidâs geometry seemed completeâuntil one assumption was questioned. That courage opened the door to entirely new mathematical worlds. The same is true in life. Sometimes the barrier isnât knowledgeâitâs believing our framework is complete.
Question: Where might I need the courage to question my starting point?
When Certainty Expands
Season 1 ¡ Episode 3
mercredi 6 mai 2026 ⢠Duration 03:57
Math feels certainâbut every proof begins with assumptions. When mathematicians allowed a number whose square is negative, a whole new system emerged. The old wasnât wrongâit just wasnât complete.
Question: Where might expanding my thinking help me see something deeper?
The Story We Tell Ourselves About Math
Season 1 ¡ Episode 4
jeudi 7 mai 2026 ⢠Duration 03:28
Struggle in math often feels like failureâbut itâs actually part of discovery. The stories we tell ourselves can shape how we see both math and our own potential.
Question: Do I see struggle as a sign I canâtâor as part of learning?
We Are Wired to See Patterns
Season 1 ¡ Episode 5
vendredi 8 mai 2026 ⢠Duration 02:56
We naturally recognize patternsâin people, relationships, and everyday life. Thatâs mathematical thinking. Patterns help us anticipate, trust, and understand.
Question: What patterns might I begin to see if I trusted my thinking more?
Confidence Grows Through Persistence
Season 1 ¡ Episode 6
samedi 9 mai 2026 ⢠Duration 03:57
Confidence doesnât come from always being rightâit grows through persistence. Struggle and confusion are part of learning, not signs of failure. Over time, understanding deepens and connections appear.
Question: What might I discover if I stay with the struggle?
Confidence Without Arrogance
Season 1 ¡ Episode 7
dimanche 10 mai 2026 ⢠Duration 04:06
Confidence and arrogance look similarâbut they respond differently. Confidence is open to correction; arrogance resists it. Even when we question certainty, we can become certain about others.
Question: Am I willing to listen, rethink, and grow?
Why Truth Matters
Season 1 ¡ Episode 8
lundi 11 mai 2026 ⢠Duration 03:41
We all want something solid to stand onâbut in a world full of noise, opinions, and uncertainty, thatâs not always easy to find. This episode explores why truth matters and how it provides clarity, direction, and stability. Through the lens of math, we begin to see truth not as restrictive, but as something beautiful that holds and guides us.
What Do We Mean by Truth?
Season 1 ¡ Episode 9
mardi 12 mai 2026 ⢠Duration 05:24
Not all truth works the same way. This episode explores the differences between scientific truth, legal truth, mathematical truth, and faith. Along the way, we uncover the importance of reasoning clearlyâand the danger of circular thinking. Truth isnât something to force; itâs something weâre invited to explore.
The Beauty of Proof
Season 1 ¡ Episode 10
mercredi 13 mai 2026 ⢠Duration 03:11
What does it feel like to truly see something is true? This episode explores the beauty of mathematical proofânot as a way to create truth, but to reveal it. Through a simple geometric example, we discover that truth isnât just something to acceptâitâs something we can understand, experience, and even appreciate.
