121: The 100 Best Books for Work and Life with Publisher Todd Sattersten - Part 116 Dec 202501:00:00

In this episode, I sit down with my friend and publisher, Todd Sattersten to unpack his brand-new book The 100 Best Books for Work & Life. After spending thousands of hours studying the world's top ideas, Todd distilled them into three massive themes: the core beliefs that shape how we grow, the foundational skills we all need, and the proven strategies for implementation. Together, we explore why purpose matters more than you think, why progress—not perfection—is what keeps us motivated, and how the strongest relationships (both personal and professional) can radically improve your success. We also break down lessons from books on goals, growth, habits, vulnerability, and the surprising science behind becoming your best self.

This conversation skims across decades of research, the best thinkers in the world, and hundreds of lessons that can transform your trajectory. If you've ever wondered what to prioritize, where to focus, or how to build a career and life you actually love, you'll hear ideas you can implement today—along with the stories, examples, and science that make them stick.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • The surprising way Todd chose the "100 best" books—and why categories came after the insights

  • The core belief every high performer needs before any real growth can happen

  • A mindset shift from one of the world's most famous researchers that proves anyone can improve

  • The daily and weekly habits scientifically shown to increase happiness, productivity, and clarity

  • Why three layers of your social network influence you far more than you realize

  • The uncomfortable—but essential—truth Brene Brown uncovered about connection and professional success

  • A story of how following intuitive energy (instead of logic) can redirect an entire career

  • The one type of progress that dramatically increases motivation—and how to track it in under 15 minutes

If this episode sparks something in you—an idea, a curiosity, or even the sense that it's time for a shift—I'd love for you to dive into Part 2 where we continue the conversation with generosity, influence, habits, and implementation. And if Todd's insights resonated, check out The 100 Best Books for Work & Life and start building your own roadmap for growth. Your next breakthrough might be waiting in the pages of a single book—or a single idea you hear today.

Getting Great at Growth16 Dec 202200:05:18

This is the last of the 100 micro power-packed episodes series, and I have saved the best for last. There has been one meta lesson that has been underneath all of the other 99 episodes in this series, and that's what I'm sharing now. In this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, I'm sharing the number one reason why you should be focusing on getting great at growth. And the reason is that getting great at growth gives you control.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • Why getting great at growth gives you more control, not less control
  • The 4 big ways it gives you control

The idea I want you to leave with in this episode is that if you become great at growth, you're going to get control. Not only to live the professional life you want, but those four big wins also impact your personal life as well. It'll give you control to live the life you want in the way that you want.

If you want to go deeper into this topic, make sure to check out The Snowball System. It covers everything we talk about here in greater detail and I know you'll love it.

Creating Business Development Habits for Exponential Growth14 Dec 202200:06:49

In the first few episodes this week, we talked about business development as a learnable skill, and in the second we talked about how I want you to attack your business development skill like a pro athlete would attack their sport. In this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, I want to talk about habits and why they are so important.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • Why habits are so important
  • The types of habits you should develop

Avoid falling into the trap of not mapping out your habits. Just start with one thing. I would recommend starting with weekly habits, which we will go into in the next episode. Don't let your business development happen willy-nilly. You've got to have a system if you're going to do it well.

To learn more about atomic habits and systems, make sure to tune in to my conversation with James Clear. He did a great job in this episode and I really recommend it.

Why You Should Start Looking at Your Business Like a Pro Athlete13 Dec 202200:04:10

In our last episode, we talked about how business development is a learnable skill, and in this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, I'm building on that. You need to think about business development like a pro athlete would think about developing their skills. If they're at the top of their game, they are focused on improving in any way possible. That's how you should be approaching business development.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • How you should be thinking about business development
  • Why you should find a way to measure your BD activities

When you think about these 100 micro lessons, I want you to go back to the ones that were meaningful to you. I want you to go back to the ones that you want to try. I want you to find a way to measure the most important elements of your activities, your business development, and your success. Attack it in a way that you're always striving to get a little bit better.

If you want to learn more about this topic, listen to my conversation with Kelley O'Hara. We talk about a lot of things in this episode that apply to business development and how you should approach it.

Business Development Is a Learnable Skill12 Dec 202200:03:28

In the last five episodes of this series, I'm giving you five macro lessons. I'm going meta with these lessons and these are some things I want you to keep in mind as we close out this series. In this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, I'm tying it back to the beginning and discussing how business development is a learnable skill.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • Why business development is a learnable skill
  • How we never stop learning

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you have to be born with this skill. You can always improve your skills and that includes business development. We are never done learning.

To dive deeper into this topic, make sure to check out my conversation with Dan Pink. We talk about business development as a skill that can be learned because we are all salespeople in some way. It's a great conversation and I think you'll really enjoy it.

Creating a Campaign of Helpfulness to Build Relationships That Stick10 Dec 202200:28:13

In this set of videos, we are going to be talking about early-stage relationships. There's a lot of science around this but in this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, I'm sharing tips for getting your interactions just right early in your relationships for momentum that lasts. I share ways to take notes for hireable and human follow-ups, why you should keep them short, and how to develop systems for implementation.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • Why your early interactions matter
  • Why following up is so important with new relationships
  • How to take notes when meeting new people
  • Why you need to do this immediately when meeting someone
  • Why you want to focus on human follow-ups too
  • How to show commonality
  • What types of notes to take
  • How to build a plan
  • Why short interactions are better than long follow-ups
  • Why it's important to have reminders
  • Tools to use to stay organized
  • The time frame to use to send out your follow-ups

You have to avoid treating new relationships like you would a relationship that you've had for a long time. You need extra care, extra value, and extra attention in the first month or two of a relationship. You don't have to do this for everybody. But for your most important new relationships, you want to have a system for following up and adding value. Using these tips will help you build momentum and create relationships that stick.

Creating a System to Implement Your Follow-Ups09 Dec 202200:06:22

In the last four episodes, we covered the science of early-stage relationships, and how important it is to have a lot of positive interactions within the first couple of weeks and months that you meet someone, also known as the Campaign of Helpfulness. We also covered how to follow up in hireable and helpful ways. In this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, we are talking about how you can map them out and create a time-based reminder system to help you send out those reminders.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • Why it's important to have reminders
  • Tools to use to stay organized
  • The time frame to use to send out your follow-ups

Avoid having too few touchpoints during this process. When you do these types of follow-ups for a while, your relationships will stick. You're showing the other person that you care, you're paying attention, you're thinking of them, and trying to be helpful. That is going to be well-received.

The key is having systems. To learn more about a great business development  system, make sure to check out BD Habits.

Why Short Interactions Are the Best Way to Conduct Follow-Ups08 Dec 202200:07:06

In this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, I'm pulling from the last few episodes where we talked about orchestrating a campaign of helpfulness for a very important person that you met recently. We covered notes that you can take so that you can follow up in a hireable way and in a human way. Now we are talking about how you're going to build a plan.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • How to build a plan
  • Why short interactions are better than long follow-ups

After a business meeting, avoid falling into the trap of sending one email with all of the business-related follow-ups you can think of. This squashes your momentum. It will just be deferred. You want to instead focus on lots of back and forth that builds momentum.

If you want to learn more about this, make sure to listen to my conversation with the best networker I've ever met, Dr. Ivan Misner. He has a very specific way that he does his follow-ups after meeting someone and I think you'll enjoy hearing about it.

Tips for Human-Centric Follow-Ups07 Dec 202200:05:41

In the last episode, I covered hireable ways that you can follow up with new people that you meet. In this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, I'm sharing a second, completely different way to follow up that shows that you're human. Of course you want to be hireable, but you want to show that you're human too.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • Why you want to focus on human follow-ups too
  • How to show commonality
  • What types of notes to take

If you take notes on hireable follow-ups and human follow-ups, then you end up having a big huge list of meaningful ways to follow up. Avoid only using hireable follow-up methods. It is so important to be human too.

If you want to learn more about following up in a human-centric way, make sure to listen to my interview with Grant Baldwin. We had a great conversation about it and I think you'll really enjoy it.

How to Follow Up in a Hireable Way06 Dec 202200:04:55

In the last episode, we talked about how to have a system, plan, or campaign of helpfulness in place for the first couple of months when you meet someone new. This is something that you don't want to do for everyone but for a few really important people that you meet. In this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, I'm sharing ways to follow up in a hireable way.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • How to take notes when meeting new people
  • Why you need to do this immediately when meeting someone

The most important thing you can do is write those things down. It will help you remember that person and give you some great things to follow up on. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you'll come up with new ways to follow up after the fact.

If you want to learn more about following up and how much success it can bring you, make sure to listen to my conversation with Linda Klein. I think it'll really bring to life the idea of helpful follow-up.

Mastering the Art of Positive Influence in Everyday Interactions with Author Dr. Vanessa Bohns17 Jun 202500:49:38

Have you ever wondered why asking for what you want can feel so awkward—and why people say yes more often than we think? In this episode, I dive deep with Dr. Vanessa Bohns, an organizational behavior expert from Cornell University and the author of You Have More Influence Than You Think. Together, we unpack why influence is so much more than persuasion—and why it's less about manipulation and more about authentic, everyday impact.

Whether you're a leader, a business developer, or simply looking to grow your positive influence, this conversation is packed with insights on building trust, making confident asks, and empowering others while avoiding the "ick" factor.

  • 3:05 — Why putting "positive" in front of influence might matter more than you think

  • 6:45 — The 100-year legacy of How to Win Friends and Influence People and why it's still relevant today

  • 10:15 — Why "just ask" works and how face-to-face requests get 34x more yeses than emails

How to Leverage Your Strengths When Meeting New People02 Dec 202200:06:41

In this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, I'm wrapping up the last 15 videos where we discussed different methods for meeting new people. Forging New Relationships with Episodic Writing01 Dec 202200:07:08

The last couple of weeks we have been talking about forming new relationships, getting introduced to whoever you want, and how to do all of this in a scalable way. In this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, I'm sharing the last method in scalable ways to meet new people. It's called Episodic Writing. This is when you write about a topic when something relevant happens as a way to meet certain people.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • What Episodic Writing is
  • Where to publish your content
  • How to use this method to meet people

Avoid thinking that you are done as soon as the piece you wrote posts. You need to think of this as the starting line, not the finish line. Many people try to use this method but they don't do it right. You want to be strategic with your time and efforts so that it gets in front of the right people.

There's so much more on this topic in The Snowball System in chapter 6. Make sure to check it out for some really useful information that will help you find success with this method.

Using Social Media as a Lead Generation Tool30 Nov 202200:06:15

In this episode of Real Relationships Real Revenue, I'm talking about how you can use social media as a lead generation tool. This one is tricky because few people do this well. There is a method that you'll want to stick to when going this route. Essentially, you want to post content and use social media to amplify it. Then, you get targeted about who you want to meet and get that content in front of them.

Topics We Cover in This Episode:

  • Who should use social media
