| Photographer Lisa Jayne Cramer joins Michael Chovan-Dalton from the 2026 Chico Review to talk about some very personal work involving relationship, grief, and reconciliation. | 05 Oct 2026 | 00:10:38 | |
2026 Chico Attendees Series Photographer Lisa Jayne Cramer joins Michael Chovan-Dalton from the 2026 Chico Review to talk about some very personal work involving relationship, grief, and reconciliation. This work has recently been recognized through the inaugural Ephemere Photobook Grant in 2026 and is scheduled to be published by Ephemere Tokyo in October 2026. https://www.lisajaynecramer.com https://www.instagram.com/lisajaynecramer/ Lisa Jayne Cramer is an Australian photographer based in Melbourne/Naarm. For as long as she can remember, she has felt most at peace holding a camera. Drawn to analogue photography and performative self-portraiture, she found a way to express how she experiences and understands the world. Cramer’s photographic practice is a deeply personal enquiry into love, longing, grief and beauty. Drawing upon qualities of abstract expressionism, she explores the constant presence of absence through collage, performative imagery and metaphor. Flowers, particularly roses and lilies, recur throughout her work as symbols of fertility, decay, femininity and resilience, becoming vessels for both beauty and sorrow. Her photographs have been exhibited throughout Australia and internationally, including in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her work is held in private collections across Australia, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and Mexico. She has been published in FotoNostrum Magazine (Barcelona, 2024) and Eyes on the World (Kamira Institute, Paris, 2025). Cramer is a proud alumna of the 2025 Long Term Program: The Photobook at Penumbra Foundation, New York, through which she developed her first photobook, FLOWER under ether. The artist-produced edition was completed in December 2025 and is held in the permanent collection of State Library Victoria. In 2026, FLOWER under ether was awarded the inaugural Ephemere Photobook Grant. A new Japan-produced edition is currently being developed in collaboration with Ephemere Tokyo, with publication planned for October 2026. Cramer was also selected to participate in Chico Review in Montana, USA, in 2026. No Invite: Ten Years of Capturing Fashion Week by Any Means Necessary A Retrospective by Dan Bassini Recorded live at the JKC Gallery. No Invite is a series focused on capturing Fashion Week by any means necessary. With a lifelong interest in fashion, and no connection to the industry, Bassini set out to shoot the beauty and chaos the only way he knew how. Sneaking into parties, subverting security, and hitting the streets. Shot entirely on 35mm compact cameras, No Invite is a unique look into the fashion world, even when your name isn’t on the guest list. https://www.danbassini.com/no-invite https://www.instagram.com/danbassini Dan Bassini is a photographer based in Jersey City, NJ specializing in digital and analog photography. He is an alum of Mercer County Community College. He has released thirteen books within the “No Invite” series, as well as four non-portraiture books: Highway Hypnosis, Cruel Summer, I STILL FEEL IT, and most recently When I Kill God I Will Find The Spigot From Which He Meters Out Grace And Smash It Permanently Open. His work has been featured in many solo and group shows in the New York City area. Dan Bassini’s work builds builds upon the legacy of the photographer, Bill Cunningham, the former fashion street photographer for the New York Times, but Bassini’s work comes from a different perspective, not from the invited insider as Cunningham was, but from the not-invited outsider. There’s a sense of chance meeting and serendipitous encounters to his work because his approach to accessing these places and encountering the invited guests is also filled with chance and serendipity. Recently, Bassini’s work has been featured in Vogue Türkiye and on CNN. | Photographer Stuart Thurlkill joins Michael Chovan-Dalton from the 2026 Chico Review to talk about his photographs of a famous river corridor in Montana. | 27 Sep 2026 | 00:10:47
2026 Chico Attendees Series Photographer Stuart Thurlkill joins Michael Chovan-Dalton from the 2026 Chico Review to talk about his photographs of a famous river corridor in Montana. Thurlkill also has some great insight into how the photo review process can be most beneficial. Stuart Thurlkill’s work exists at the intersection of observation and intuition. An award-winning filmmaker and photographer, he does not merely capture a subject; he unearths the quiet dialogue between heart and head. His documentary roots provide a foundation of truth, yet his lens often seeks the shadows where nature, community and industry converge in unexpected ways. Whether freezing a fleeting moment in the wild or the stillness of a portrait, Thurlkill invites us to witness the world as it is felt, a lingering presence in a restless world. https://www.stuartthurlkill.com https://www.instagram.com/stuartthurlkill/ This podcast is sponsored by the Charcoal Book Club Begin Building your dream photobook library today at https://charcoalbookclub.com The Chico Review is the country’s premier Photobook Retreat. | Photographer Chris Muth joins Michael Chovan-Dalton from the 2026 Chico Review to talk about his landscape work and processing the varying critiques he received. | 25 Sep 2026 | 00:09:10
2026 Chico Attendees Series Photographer Chris Muth joins Michael Chovan-Dalton from the 2026 Chico Review to talk about his landscape work and processing the varying critiques he received. My name is Chris Muth. I have been a photographer for over 12 years, exploring many different styles and disciplines within the medium, as you may be able to tell. I received my education in filmmaking, and have been photographing, originally, as a way to practice cinematography without a crew and equipment. It has now taken over my creative interest, really since I went to college. For the past few years, I have focused on the land around me, trying to find something within it that I cannot find through other photographic work about the subject. I have been working on a project titled Everywhere You Have Ever Been for about 5 years now, and am going to complete it before this next spring. This project is concerned with exploring our connection to the natural world by exploring the hostility between us. This website will serve as a constantly evolving catalog of that project, as well as a showcase of my previous commercial and creative work. Feel free to contact me for any freelance opportunities, I am open for business! I would love to assist on any projects, and help support a vision! | JOHN BAER: THE EXTRAORDINARY ORDINARY / A MEMOIR IN PHOTOGRAPHS 1945–1954 | 19 Sep 2026 | 00:47:20
JOHN BAER: THE EXTRAORDINARY ORDINARY / A MEMOIR IN PHOTOGRAPHS 1945–1954 Andrew Baer and Megan Moynihan join Michael Chovan-Dalton to celebrate the release of John Baer: The Extraordinary Ordinary / A Memoir in Photographs 1945-1954, A Paper Cinema Edition, published by the John Baer Archive. This is, true to its title, an extraordinary collection of the never before published life work of John Baer, Andrew Baer's father. It's also a conversation about how wonderful a collaboration can be between family and professionals such as famed designer Yolanda Cuomo and her team, Alexa Dilworth and Jonno Rattman, Steve Smith at RISD, and Eric Luden at Digital Silver Imaging, who all believe in the work. https://www.johnbaerarchive.com https://www.instagram.com/johnbaerarchive/ https://www.instagram.com/yolandacuomodesign/ JOHN BAER (1920-1994) In 1945, while serving in the 644th Tank Destroyer Battalion, John Baer acquired a Leica camera from a captured German soldier. His first photographs were of his fellow soldiers, weary from war. Soon after the war John and his wife Louise moved to New York City, rented an apartment in the East Village, and connected with a community of artists and writers. In 1950 they journeyed to France and spent the next year living in Montpellier and traveling throughout Postwar Europe. John’s photographs capture a world struggling to understand itself following years of war and political realignment. In 1951 John and Louise returned to New York and their apartment in the East Village. John walked the streets, taking pictures that provide glimpses of ordinary people in the unguarded moments of their lives—at work, at rest, at play. He developed negatives and made prints in a make-shift darkroom in the bathroom of their fifth floor walk-up. Sometime in the mid-1950s, John stowed his photographic life away. After his death, in 1994, his son Andrew found boxes containing thousands of negatives and prints from between 1945 and 1954. For 27 years the boxes moved whenever Andrew did. Finally, in 2021, Andrew and his wife Megan Moynihan dove into the boxes to see what stories they held. Stories of Europe emerging from the darkness of war. Stories of New York City brimming with the optimism of the early 1950s. Stories of a generation and stories of John Baer, seen through the lens of his Leica. Visual storyteller and photojournalist, Ann Hermes, joins Michael Chovan-Dalton from the 2026 Chico Review to discuss her advocacy for visual storytelling and her photographic exploration of the loss of local newsrooms. https://www.annhermesphoto.com https://www.instagram.com/hermesphoto/ I am a Brooklyn and Boston-based photojournalist and visual storyteller with a flair for the nostalgic. I create documentary tableaus that explore the roles that often overlooked, and sometimes outdated, institutions and people play in our history, culture and future. I’ve worked in a variety of logistically challenging situations on national and international assignments over my 15 years as a staff photographer for The Christian Science Monitor and other national and regional news outlets. This work ranged from breaking visual news coverage of the Arab Spring in Egypt to in-depth stories following Syrian refugees in Eastern Europe. My stories have also been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, The New Republic, and AARP. After years of experience in news photography, I am using my documentary expertise to create a visual exploration of the current critical era in journalism and explore the potential harm that the loss of local newsrooms would bring to our democracy. My Local Newsrooms project was recently exhibited at Photoville and profiled in Lenscratch. I hold an MA in Journalism from the University of Missouri. | Photographer Klaus Ruckgaber joins Michael Chovan-Dalton from the 2026 Chico Review to discuss Sehnsucht, the German word for a kind of longing, and how he uses that in his work. | 27 Jul 2026 | 00:13:05
Photographer Klaus Ruckgaber joins Michael Chovan-Dalton from the 2026 Chico Review to discuss Sehnsucht, the German word for a kind of longing, and how he uses that in his work. https://fleischkleidung.com https://www.instagram.com/fleischkleidung/ I was born March 7th 2002 in Mexico City. I am attracted by the manifestation of feeling, the existential and the ungraspable. I am an individual who believes that there are no absolutes, there is no absolute beauty or an absolute truth or meaning. My work is focused on that idea. Our flaws, we are our own unreliable narrator in our existence and we shouldn't hide this but instead to carry it with tenderness and acceptance. The way we see the world is unique, splendor can be found in the unconventional, the “dregs” of life can also be beautiful. In decay flowers bloom, in the lesions there are lessons and without loss, love has no consequence. While by very proficient with photoshop I never alter any of my own work, apart from grading. My projects usually involve people. I love involving them with a project asking them to participate somehow, usually by adding text or drawings to a portrait or image. In 2005, for Return to Sender, I sent 500 hand written letters with an image to random people all across the UK, asking for a response. For the HAIR project I asked people to have all their hair cut off and to then reflect on that. In the pandemic I photographed the neighbours in black and white to then revisit them 2 years later inside their houses, shooting them in colour now. For Take a Look at Yourself I photographed 150 people with a large plate camera over a period of 8 years. I then asked them to have a really long good look at the image, and reflect. He received his BFA in Photography from the Tyler School of Art in 2017. The work emerges from the balance of craft, invention, and image, where the tools themselves are reflected in the final vision. Jacob is a member of the New Jersey Pinhole Club (NJPC) and works with Philadelphia’s film community as a lab monitor and teaching assistant for The Halide Project. CJ Harker is a photographer currently located in Philadelphia. Born and raised in Trenton, NJ, he was initially drawn to making both still and moving images through skateboarding. Skateboarding not only reenforced an anything-goes, DIY mentality but also nurtured his ingenuity and creative output. CJ enjoys focusing on the craft of photography as well as keeping current with the latest technologies. In addition to a systematic digital workflow CJ’s skill set is comprised of historic and alternative photographic methods including traditional film processing, scanning and darkroom practices. | Mark Woods, photographer and cinematographer, speaks about his love of the stand-alone image at the 2026 Chico Review. | 08 Jun 2026 | 00:19:04
2026 Chico Attendees Series Mark Woods, photographer and cinematographer, speaks about his love of the stand-alone image. Mark Woods is a fine art black & white still photographer and commercial cinematographer raised in a California family deeply rooted in photography and film. His father operated a portrait studio in Hollywood, while his grandfather famously purchased and released the film Reefer Madness. Growing up surrounded by cameras, film, and darkrooms would later shape Woods’ lifelong visual career. Woods discovered his passion for image-making while attending the University of California, Berkeley in 1968, where he studied Photo Ethnographic Anthropology. During his years at Berkeley, he became known for creating powerful street photography and formal documentary imagery. By the time he graduated in 1971, Woods had become the university’s preferred photographer for student activities, jazz festivals, and campus publications, often credited as Francis Woods. After returning to Hollywood, Woods worked extensively in both still photography and motion picture production. He opened a still photography studio at Columbia Studios, producing advertising imagery before transitioning fully into cinematography. Over the course of a 30-year career, he shot and directed more than 1,000 commercials and 25 feature films, earning multiple industry awards for his work. In addition to his commercial career, Woods taught advanced cinematography at several respected institutions, including California State University Northridge (CSUN), the American Film Institute (AFI), National University, and ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. In 2004, Woods returned to his roots in analog black & white photography, building a traditional darkroom and focusing more deeply on fine art still imagery. His photographic series include Berkeley 1968–1973, W/O & Later (Hollywood Behind The Scenes ’73–’79), Pasadena’s Arroyo landscapes, early Chinese structures at the Huntington Gardens, floral portraits, and other still life works. Working primarily with large format photography and traditional analog processes, Woods combines documentary realism with a strong pictorialist influence. His landscapes are created using natural light, while his still lifes are carefully illuminated using strobes, tungsten lighting, or available light depending on the subject and mood. Today, Mark Woods continues to explore timeless photographic methods while preserving moments of history, atmosphere, and human experience through both still photography and cinematography. https://www.markwoods.com https://stills-that-move.myshopify.com This podcast is sponsored by the Charcoal Book Club Begin Building your dream photobook library today at https://charcoalbookclub.com The Chico Review is the country’s premier Photobook Retreat. | Photographer Michelle Arcila joins Real Photo Show with Michael Chovan-Dalton to discuss photographing family and history. | 30 May 2026 | 01:00:26
Photographer Michelle Arcila joined me at the JKC Gallery to discuss the process of making incredibly personal work that involves family and trauma and who that work might be for. We also talk about photographing your family, especially your children, and how to find the balance between exploring a painful narrative in the work while protecting those you are photographing from your past experiences. https://www.michellearcila.net https://www.instagram.com/michelle.arcila/ Michelle Arcila is a Costa Rican/American photographer living and working in Brooklyn, New York. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 2002 with a BFA in photography. Her work primarily focuses on family lore, motherhood, bicultural identity, and ancestral trauma. Her photographs have been exhibited and published both nationally and internationally; they also appear in a number of private collections. In 2012, after the birth of her first daughter, she took a hiatus from commercial work. During that time she was able to really start exploring how the work she was creating related to not only her experience of growing up in the United States as a first generation American; which came with the feeling of not feeling from here and not feeling from there (“No soy de aquí, no soy de allá.”) and how that sentiment played into her role as a mother and perhaps how all of this combined has affected her mental health struggles. She is the recipient of the Photowork 2025 Fellowship and was shortlisted for the PHMuseum 2025 Women’s Grant. She currently divides her time between the Hudson Valley and Brooklyn, NY, where she lives with her husband and two daughters. Susan Weiss speaks about Hello Susan and Black Tulip at the 2026 Chico Review https://www.susanweissart.com/portfolio-3 https://www.instagram.com/susanweissart/ Susan Weiss works in the visual arts in many mediums, including photography, film, painting and drawing. Her work explores the issues of personal identity and the psycho-social landscape. She also teaches drawing and student artist portfolio preparation both live and in zoom consultation. Susan's projects include the ongoing series Humanity in the Modern World, documenting humanitarian work in other countries, most recently the immigration story at the El Paso/Ciudad Juarez border with a Washington D.C, based NGO. Her short documentary films explore the experiences of womanhood, have played on the festival circuit and won many awards. THE ORCHARD, seasonal photographs of a Vermont apple orchard, tell the story of hope and faith during the years of the pandemic. Susan photographs with both digital and film cameras depending on the project, including Mamiya 7II, Leica M9P and Leica M10, Polaroid SX70 and 680, Iphone 17 Pro Max, and plastic toy cameras. “Exploring and photographing the human condition is the major theme in my work. I attempt to connect with people and photograph their lives to document what makes them unique as individuals. The stories are personal but they become my stories as I photograph and interpret through the lens of my camera, and their lives become my art. It is this attraction to lives that are unique and with a sense of vulnerability that drives my work.” This podcast is sponsored by the Charcoal Book Club - Begin Building your dream photobook library today at: https://charcoalbookclub.com

| Ivan McClellan | Eight Seconds | 01 Feb 2026 | 00:52:02 | |
'Eight Seconds: Black Rodeo Culture', the first book by Ivan McClellan, offers an inside look at Black cowboy culture across the United States in the 21st century, creating a bridge between present and past through sports, community, and love of the land. In 2015, photographer Ivan McClellan attended the Roy LeBlanc Invitational in Oklahoma, the country’s longest-running Black rodeo, at the invitation of Charles Perry, director and producer of The Black Cowboy. Over the next decade, McClellan embarked on a journey across the nation, crafting a multi-layered look at contemporary Black rodeo culture for the new book, 'Eight Seconds'. Whether photographing teen cowgirl sensation Kortnee Solomon at her family’s Texas stables, capturing bull riding champion Ouncie Mitchell in action, or kicking it with the Compton Cowboys at their Los Angeles ranch, McClellan chronicles the extraordinary athletes who keep the magic and majesty of the “Old West” alive with high-octane displays of courage, strength, and skill. The book’s title refers to the sport of bull riding — athletes must stay on a bull for eight seconds while it bucks and the more hectic the ride, the higher they score. 'Eight Seconds: Black Rodeo Culture' is edited by Miss Rosen and includes a foreword by Charles Sampson, the first African American cowboy to win a world championship in professional rodeo. | Siri Kaur | Sistermoon | 22 Jul 2025 | 00:43:19
Photographer and Educator, Siri Kaur, joins me to discuss her new monograph, Sistermoon published by Void. Artist Siri Kaur has been photographing her family for over 30 years, and her youngest sister, Simran, is the central focus of her forthcoming book, Sistermoon. Kaur’s photographs are combined with those from her family archive to create an unconventional album, illustrating the cycles of life and transformation, whilst questioning who observes, who is seen and who belongs. Kaur’s biography informs her work. The book opens with a timeline of photographs from her mother’s traditional family, taken in the 1950s by her grandfather. Kaur herself was born into a cult—one image in the book depicts her parent’s wedding at the Happy Healthy Holy Organization, or 3HO in 1976. After Kaur's family left the cult, her father established a rural living community in Vermont where her siblings remain today. Kaur simultaneously belonged to the family and was also an outsider. Her relationship with her family, in particular her sister, was formed and strengthened by creating photographs together. Photography enabled her to observe, catalogue, and connect. https://www.instagram.com/sirikaur/ This podcast is sponsored by the Charcoal Book Club Begin Building your dream photobook library today at https://charcoalbookclub.com Siri Kaur is an artist and photographer who examines identities that occupy dualities, diversity, and contradiction. Originally from Maine, Kaur is currently based in Los Angeles. She received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, and an MA and a BA from Smith College, Massachusetts. Her work has been exhibited widely at venues such as Aperture Foundation, New York; Camera Club of New York; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Arkansas; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Portland Museum of Art; San Antonio Museum of Art; Vermont Center for Photography, amongst others. She was a Professor of Fine Arts at Otis College of Art and Design from 2007-2018 and currently teaches at UCLA.
