| Beth Ryan on the realities of navigating business and babies | 29 Apr 2025 | 00:54:45 | |
If you've given birth or consume any content in the motherhood and birth space, there's a good chance you've come across Beth Ryan. She's the founder of PowerBirth, she's a midwife, she's a mother of two, and she's just one of those people that makes you feel better. She's a soothing balm, she's incredibly intelligent and empowering when it comes to childbirth education, and she's someone that I've found to be an absolute joy to follow online. In this conversation, we learn how PowerBirth has grown to be the business it is today, how she and her partner have made changes in her family to enable her to go full throttle with PowerBirth, what it's been like to grow her team, and her experience going from one to two babies. This is such an insightful conversation filled with business advice, how she feels about how she shows up online and what she's learned about motherhood, midwifery, and childbirth along the way. --- This episode is brought to you by Ocean Thinkers, a social enterprise on a mission to inspire the next generation to learn more about our ocean, make a positive impact and be part of a hopeful future. | Sarah Tarca on the most divisive parenting choice she's ever made | 08 Apr 2025 | 01:05:10
Sarah Tarca's decision not to send her kids to childcare has nothing to do with me and my choice to send mine, and yet, of all the choices she's made in her parenting life, this is the one that is the most divisive...the one that compels people to voice their opinion the loudest. She's not holding up childcare is bad signs, she's not telling others not to do it. Simply, it just wasn't part of her motherhood and career plan. And after listening to her talk about it, I'm convinced that we can all get a little better at finding confidence in our own choices, rather than judging someone's else's. Prior to motherhood, she cut her teeth at the likes of Cosmo and Girlfriend, before building a freelance career as a beauty journalist that would allow her to travel and work around the world. In fact, she was on a plane to Brazil to attend Carnival when she got the call to confirm her first pregnancy. Here, she talks about the identity loss that came with leaving her corporate career behind, what she learned from how Mia Freedman made work, work as a young mum in the media world, how starting her family later than the norm helped her to create the flexible work schedule she wanted, and why childcare wasn't part of the plan for her family. --- This episode is brought to you by Bonne Soirée - beautiful, timeless bed linen for children. | The anxiety attack that changed everything for BubbaDesk founder Lauren Perrett | Interviews | 10 Sep 2024 | 00:45:00
For some mothers, the idea of leaving their baby - particularly in those first few months or even years - feels excruciating, irreconcilable, even. For others, having space to engage in pursuits outside of mothering feels important, perhaps even necessary. Both feelings are valid and on this particular subject, I'm a chameleon. Every day, my wants and needs as a mother and a professional turn a new shade - my feelings are never stagnant, they're ever-changing. I've often said that if there was a way to simultaneously strap my babies to my chest and have them 10 kilometres away from me at all times, I'd be content. So deep is the tension that exists between wanting both, so deep is the paradox that is modern motherhood. And perhaps there is nothing that quite magnifies that tension as much as navigating the murky waters of motherhood and career. It's something that today's guest knows all about. Lauren Perrett had a panic attack during a meeting in New Zealand when returning to paid work, and I don't think it's a stretch to say it changed everything for the mother of two. And eventually, she'd go on to launch BubbaDesk - the co-working service with onsite childcare that is quite literally changing lives. Here, we talk finding meaning in paid work, how that meeting in New Zealand would go on to change her path, and why mothers and parents need more choice when it comes to childcare. -- Shop the Ready or Not Go To Guides now, for $29 each or $69 for the trio: --- Thanks for listening to Witching Hour! | The antidote to loneliness in motherhood with Ariel Bryant and Keshia Hutchens | 03 Sep 2024 | 01:06:48
For decades, women and mothers have been hiding. We cover up our breasts as we feed our babies because since forever, our breasts have been sexualised. How dare you get those tarty things out to offer nourishment to that hungry, tired love of your life. Put them away. We hide the blood that drops between our legs because we've been told it's disgusting. And what's more repulsive, more unattractive, more intolerable, they tell us, is the mood swings that it brings. A woman on her period, they say, is crazy. And often, we hide the depths of our feelings as we navigate the throes of early motherhood, because we're meant to be grateful. We're meant to be giving. We're meant to be naturally good at it. That doesn't leave much room for comfort in motherhood, in fact it creates a feeling entirely opposite to warmth. And that is loneliness. And it was when Keshia Hutchens and Ariel Bryant were walking the streets of Melbourne with their third babies that they wondered - interrogated, even - why there wasn't a safe space for mothers to go. To think and feel and learn and question and laugh and cry. And so, they created From Day One; a space that is pulling mothers from outside of their own four walls and bringing them their village. From how the two co-founders have made work, work over the years, to the magic that they're witnessing between the mothers who are making up the village that is From Day One, this is a special conversation about loneliness and the antidote to it. -- Shop the Ready or Not Go To Guides now, for $29 each or $69 for the trio and 10% off with code READY10: --- Thanks for listening to Witching Hour! | "We had very different pictures of motherhood" with business partners and sisters Bianca and Kritz Sciessere | 27 Aug 2024 | 01:00:05
As a youngest child with three older brothers, I've always been fascinated by sisters and the way I witnessed sisterhood play out among friends and family as a kid, and I think that's why I found today's guests and co-founders of The Big Sister Experience so interesting. As they're about to tell you, while their best friends, business partners, perhaps even each other's soul mate in a lot of ways, Bianca and Kritz Sciessere could not be more different in a lot of ways. Bianca longed for and dreamed of motherhood her entire life, and while I wouldn't describe Kritz as apathetic towards motherhood, it certainly didn't consume her thoughts in the same way. And so as you can imagine, this led to tensions when Bianca took her first parental leave. The training wheels were on as the two were thrown into the deep end of figuring out how to manage their booming business while Bianca was finding her feet as a first time mum, and with both sisters feeling lonely and challenged in their own unique way, it led to their first and only big fight in five years of business. And they're here to tell us all about it. But not only are the two navigating motherhood and business, through their work, they're offering a transformative journey for girls and gender-diverse students, dedicated to inspiring the next generation. So not only was I deeply interested to hear about their journey of navigating motherhood and sisterhood in business, I also wanted to learn about the youth of today - what gives them hope, what the common themes are, and what's challenging them. I learned so much that I will apply to my own children and I know that you will to. What a special chat. I hope you love it as much as I loved talking to them. -- Shop the Ready or Not Go To Guides now, for $29 each or $69 for the trio and 10% off with code READY10: --- Thanks for listening to Witching Hour! | “What if this all turns to shit?” with Emeldo founder Emily Dornbusch | 20 Aug 2024 | 00:44:34
When I sat down to record this chat with my friend and the founder of Emeldo Emily Dornbusch, I warned her that I might sound a little bit more professional and a little less like me. But on listening back, it's actually the listeners that I need to warn, because this conversation is probably about as honest a depiction of making work, work alongside motherhood as you'll get. We have a baby that magically discovered a cough just as the mother of two who's pregnant with her third sat down to join us and you can only imagine the anxiety that gave me. We have a tech failure that means we're very cosily sharing the same mic, and at the start of the interview, you can hear Posie feeding. So, it's a little chaotic. There's background noise and a lot more chatter than you might be used to here, but I hope that it mirrors the sort of conversations we all have with the friends that we make through motherhood. There was so much of Emily's story that I've never heard and it was really fun to get to know the version of her that existed before kids. She founded her jewellery brand during the glory days of Instagram and has had incredible success. But, as money pressures have mounted as her family has grown, she's recently taken on another paid role on top of running her business, raising two children, and navigating her third pregnancy. Here, we talk about the sometimes harsh realities of small business, how she made the decision to seek employment outside of Emeldo, and what she's looking forward to as she gets ready to welcome her third baby. And she's actually giving our listeners 20% off her incredible collection - all you have to do is use code READY20 at emeldo.com. | Best friends Annika Hanne and Bobby Clark on dreaded texts, aligning stars and embracing magic | 13 Aug 2024 | 01:13:20
I've been having a lot of those days where you feel absolutely in the thick of it. I have a seven month old and a two and a half year old. Posie, the seven month old, isn't really sleeping. And I've often felt like pulling my hair out, like I'm going a little bit crazy. And then today I listened to my conversation with best friends and creatives, Annika Hanne and Bobby Clark. Something lit up inside of me. I was reminded of something important, something that I'd almost forgotten. And that is that motherhood, while it can be mundane, while it can be hard work... It really is magic. And so as I get ready to release this episode, I think it might be one of the most important conversations I have ever had on motherhood. And because of that, I don't want to over introduce it. All I want to say is that you're about to listen to something profound. We talk a lot about how these two make work, work, but we go a bit deeper than that. We talk about embracing the joy in motherhood. We talk about how, what Bobby has grown up with and what she's been exposed to informed her mothering journey. And we as listeners get to take the box seat in what is a beautiful friendship. The way these two explore mothering concepts together and how they want to live their lives is nothing short of beautiful. And it's an honour to sit and listen to the sort of conversation that you don't often hear about friendship, mothering, different fertility journeys, and all of the emotions that come with it. So without further ado, let me peel back the curtain on a conversation between two best friends on growing babies, careers, and lives together. Join us in Melbourne:

| Peleina Guthrie on what mothers hide when they return to work | 06 Aug 2024 | 00:53:54 | |
As a mother of three, Peleina Guthrie has had her fair share of return to paid work experiences, and each one has taken a slightly different turn. On her first rodeo, she went back to work earlier than she'd planned after landing a new job opportunity that she couldn't refuse. Six months into settling into that new workplace, she was pregnant with baby two and she was terrified. And, the third time around, at about five months into the return to work, she experienced burn out, resigned and found a new role. She's tried different work week set ups, her partner has taken parental leave for all three babies, she's navigated all of the emotions and pressures that come with navigating the return to work, and she's learned a lot along the way. Here, we talk about the most challenging transition, feeling touched out, what it means for a secondary caregiver to be able to take advantage of a supportive parental leave policy, and the pressure and guilt so many mums face when navigating career and motherhood. | Jessie Stephens on what she'd go back and tell her pregnant self | 30 Jul 2024 | 00:53:40
You know those people that you look at and think if I had my time again, I would’ve liked my career to look a little more like theirs? For me, that person is Jessie Stephens. It’s not that I expected her level of success for myself, but I always dreamed of being a journalist and a published author. So, perhaps it’s a little embarrassing to admit all this, but I was always curious about if or when she’d embark on motherhood. I admire her thoughts and feelings and work so much that I wanted to know: what would making work, work look like for Jessie Stephens? So, you can only imagine that to be able to sit down and find out had me equals parts excited and nervous. And nervous, I needn’t be. Because this incredibly successful podcaster, author and journalist is sort of just like you and me. She’s been open about her history with mental illness and how that showed up in pregnancy, and she’s spoken a lot about expecting the worst during pregnancy but getting something better. In fact, better doesn’t even cut it. She’s flat out loved motherhood in a way that the content she was consuming during pregnancy didn’t prepare her for. Here, we talk about how her definition of success has changed, the mythical career finish line that so many of us race against in preparation for motherhood, and the tension that exists between being absolutely thrilled to be a mum and still wanting (or maybe even needing) to do paid work that lights you up. | Lawyer Olivia Mioni on why working full time doesn't mean mothers love their children any less | 23 Jul 2024 | 00:44:29
Olivia Mioni always knew that her mum was an inspiration, but when she stepped into motherhood herself, she appreciated her even more. Her mum was single, she worked full time, she made a career when she was 40, and Olivia never felt like she was left to the wayside. And as a lawyer, Olivia was always worried about how she'd make work, work alongside motherhood. It wasn't necessarily the career stuff. More so, she was worried about how she'd be able to dedicate herself to family life while navigating a demanding job. But as she's here to tell you, working five days a week doesn't mean she has no time with or for her daughter. Here, we talk about the plot twist that was taking on a new role while on parental leave that would lead her back to the workforce five days a week and her husband reducing his paid work schedule, why being a full time working parent doesn't mean you love your kids any less and how motherhood has influenced her relationship with imposter syndrome and confidence for the better. I'm Lucinda, this is Ready or Not, and here is the kind and clever Olivia Mioni. --- THIS WEEK'S PARTNER This episode of Ready or Not is brought to you by La La Noon, a children’s store founded by two mothers offering a range of local, sustainable brands with a focus on well made, timeless and stylish clothing, toys and gifts. | "I don't know how we survived": Keira Rumble on her darkest days in business and motherhood | 16 Jul 2024 | 00:54:30
Nine pregnancies, two living babies and three businesses: Keira Rumble, the founder behind Krumbled Foods, Habitual Beauty, and Mini and Me, has experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. And as her many Instagram followers will know, she keeps it incredibly real. I think that's why her story is so compelling; why she's so loved and admired by mothers and business owners across the country. She's navigated IVF, hyperemesis, both perinatal and postnatal anxiety and depression. She's had the sort of rage that has scared her, received an ADHD diagnosis, and she's done it all while navigating three growing businesses. And while her businesses might look glossy on the outside, it has not been without its trials and tribulations. Sending emails from the floor of your bathroom while just trying to get through another day of pregnancy meant that her businesses sometimes were hurting as she was. So, she's not exactly sure how she got through it all, but luckily for us, she's here to tell her incredible tale. Here, we talk about how each brand came to be, how she's navigated tumultuous conception and pregnancy journeys alongside business, and what she's most proud of now, as she begins to process it all. And just to note, this episode discusses pregnancy loss and suicidal thoughts. So, please take care when listening. --- THIS WEEK'S PARTNER In this episode of Ready or Not, we are excited to partner with Youha, trusted and loved for premium breast pumps since 2010. | Mother Untitled founder Neha Ruch on why motherhood isn't the death of ambition | 09 Jul 2024 | 00:41:07
When Neha Ruch decided to take a career pause for family life, the mothers that she met weren’t exactly the image that society had painted of them. These mothers weren’t baby-obsessed, one dimensional people without a clever thought and they weren’t people that didn’t know how to do anything outside of changing a nappy. These were smart women with thoughts and passions and ideas. They were choosing to shift gears. Ambition was not left at the threshold that they crossed when they entered the door marked motherhood, in fact, dedicating themselves to motherhood was able to coexist with their ambition, despite what the world had told them. Cue Mother Untitled, Neha Ruch’s business that has been on a mission to update the perception of stay-at-home motherhood in America since 2017. Neha has become an absolute champion for the grey area of motherhood, because as she knows well, we’re not just working mums or stay at home mums. There’s so much space in between. Here, we talk about the problem with aligning our value to our titles and our productivity, the outdated stereotypes that mothers face, and how to return to paid work after a career pause. --- THIS WEEK'S PARTNER In this episode of Ready or Not, we are excited to partner with Youha, trusted and loved for premium breast pumps since 2010. | If pregnancy is easy, motherhood will be too, right? With Homb founder Larissa Leone | 01 Apr 2025 | 01:00:13
When I listened back to that grab you'll hear at the top of this episode, it brought me to tears, and I imagine or at least dream that it's sending ripples of hope and warmth through the air waves to those who need to hear that today. She's the founder of Homb, the postpartum hotel where mothers are mothered, and it's a place that's nearly a decade in the making - the place she dreamed she could go when she suffered postnatal depression after her first baby was born. In another lifetime, she worked a far more corporate career, and after discovering more about her journey, it's easy to connect the dots - to understand how her personal experiences with early motherhood collided with her operational background to birth Homb. This conversation touches on so many hard and beautiful things. In those early days, she felt lost, wonder, a sense of unravelling, and she went to some dark places. But, she emerged, and while those days will always stay with her, she learned a lot about herself and her life from them. Here, we talk about the "I can do it all" grave Larissa dug herself, what she'd go back and tell herself as a new mum, what it's like to now work in what she describes as a swimming pool of triggers, and why we need to give mothers more time. And just a note that this episode touches on suicidal ideation, so take care. --- This episode is brought to you by Our Pilates - physio led, on-demand pilates classes designed for new mums of all fitness levels and at any stage of their postpartum journey. We particularly love the eight week postnatal program. | The stickiness of modern motherhood with Sally Branson | 02 Jul 2024 | 00:50:07
Sally Branson doesn't believe in balance when you have young kids, and as I write and record this at 8pm on a Monday night ahead of inevitable overnight feeds, before a day of having both kids tomorrow, and making sure I pump enough to get to the city for paid work the following day while my husband has our five month old while he tries to get as much work done as he can, I can't help but think that she might be right. She's worked as the Press Secretary to the PM, she's run a political party and she's held high diplomatic positions with the US. And in continuing the theme of taking on big roles, she had her two boys in quick succession, too. In her own words, she's one of the older school mums, and for a long time, she wasn't sure that motherhood would be her reality, even though she always ached for it. Here, we talk the new and different pressures that mums face today, the conversations we should actually be having about the reality of motherhood, and why whatever works for you is okay. --- THIS WEEK'S PARTNER This episode is brought to you by Second Scout, home of the original magnetic timber daily Routine Helper & Little Agenda weekly planner, designed to make life easier for busy families. | "There was no plan B, so I just kept going" with natural beauty pioneer and Mukti Organics founder Mukti | 25 Jun 2024 | 00:44:38
I'm fascinated by founders and business owners like Mukti, because she's been incredibly successful with her skincare brand Mukti Organics, but she totally flies in the face of the highly corporate, suit-clad, city dwelling business person that we often associate with success. Instead, she does things a little differently. She gave birth in a tee pee, for one. Her mum was - in her words - a crazy hippy woman who renounced everything and went off to India. She was a young mum, and she founded her business before the certified organic movement was even a thing. Before social media was even a thing. She's funny, she's honest, she has some incredible tales to tell, and as someone in the earlier days of navigating parenthood and paid work, I value the wisdom of those mums that have come before me to no end. From storing products underneath tarps hanging off the back of her house and navigating separation to reflecting on 16 hour days and what she regrets, here, she covers it all with generosity and humility. --- THIS WEEK'S PARTNER This episode is brought to you by Bed Intentions, a modern wellness brand that celebrates the evolving spectrum of pleasure. | One meal two ways, what we’re automating & WTF to do when WFH with a sick kid | Tits & Tricks | 20 Jun 2024 | 00:16:12
Welcome back to Tits and Tricks! It’s Ready or Not’s new bite sized tip based podcast, and it’s coming to your ears every Thursday. Well today it’s on a Friday and if you don’t know why yet, you’ll have to listen to Wednesday’s check in episode with me, Lu. And on that, you might be wondering why you’re hearing from me when I said Loz and I would be taking turns in bringing you Tits & Tricks. Loz is solo parenting, while working four days a week while her husband is away for work. SO you get me two weeks in a row I’m afraid, and this week is made up of a whole lot of little hacks. We’re talking one meal two ways, what we’re automating so we can do less, and how to get through a day of working with a sick kid when you really have no choice but to get some form of paid work done. There’s nothing wildly new here, but sometimes I think we just need to be reminded about how others are tackling making work, work, and learning those little tricks along the way can make things SO much easier. So let’s start with one meal two ways. I’m almost thinking of how you’ll see articles about one blazer worn five ways and applying that to food. After that, I’ll share what you’re all automating to make life a bit easier and lastly, we’re talking how the heck you work when you’ve got a sick baby or kid at home with you. LINKS

| The mother of all stories with Snuggle Hunny's Julie Mathers | 19 Jun 2024 | 01:09:59 | |
Doctors and health professionals may have called Snuggle Hunny chief Julie Mathers geriatric on more than one occasion, but in my opinion, she's fit a hell of a lot in to a short amount of time. With her husband, she founded and sold an incredibly successful business in Flora and Fauna. She's experienced miscarriage and after trying for some time and some failed rounds of IVF, both of her sons ended up being conceived naturally, to her surprise. Her older boy Woody has Down Syndrome and a heart condition that will require surgery one day soon. He was born at 34 weeks and spent some time in the special care. She returned to work just four hours after his birth. And to their surprise, she was pregnant with her son Alfie just six months later. Now that all might sound overwhelming at best and incredibly stressful at worst, but that's not the story you're about to hear. Julie's story is magic. Her boys run their own races, that's for sure. But, she's not too phased. Woody is Woody and Alfie is Alfie. This is an incredible story regardless of whether you're navigating disability or not and we all need more of Julie and these stories in our lives. From Flora and Fauna to Snuggle Hunny, from Woody to Alfie, from her working class background collecting milk money to big business sales, this is one of the most colourful stories I'll ever bring you. --- THIS WEEK'S PARTNER This episode of Ready or Not is brought to you by Mukti Organics, results-driven and award-winning skin care products made with certified organic ingredients & powerful actives. | A quick check in with Lucinda: When making work, work doesn't work | 18 Jun 2024 | 00:03:54
Shit hit the fan for us as we were going to press publish on what was meant to be today's episode with Snuggle Hunny founder Julie Mathers. A big fat tech failure that nearly led Lu to start the whole edit again at 7.25pm last night. But, Loz reminded her of what's important, so here, she shares a quick check in instead. | Your return to work wardrobe checklist | Tits & Tricks | 12 Jun 2024 | 00:10:32
Welcome to Tits and Tricks! It’s Ready or Not’s new bite-sized advice-based podcast, and today is all about making the return to paid work a little bit easier via simplifying our wardrobes. Look, I am no style expert. Although I love clothes, I’m not going to pretend to be your fashion correspondent. But I am a mum who needs to get dressed each day. And of all the things that bring unexpected stress in getting out of the door in the morning to get to work, a big one can be getting yourself dressed when you’re potentially trying to get little people fed, dressed, and out the door. Your body might be different, you might have shoved your office wardrobe out of sight for six months or longer, and you might just feel different about the way you want to dress. This episode is less about vanity and more about streamlining processes. It’s inspired by our Postpartum and Return to Work Planning Guide, and while that guide doesn’t cover fashion, the logistical advice we give in that guide has influenced so many areas of my life, including my work wardrobe. --- YOUR RETURN TO WORK WARDROBE CHECKLIST Our full checklist referenced in the episode didn't quite fit the show notes limit, so please click here for the full checklist plus the items Lu mentioned, as well as links to some excellent return to work uniform sales happening at the moment. --- Thanks for listening to Ready or Not! | Why mothers are so exhausted with U-Fhern Chang | 11 Jun 2024 | 00:49:49
U-Fhern Chang was on a plane for a work trip when she had a pretty profound AHA moment. And while she didn't immediately act upon it, it would eventually lead her to completely revamp her priorities when it came to her career. Add quitting her job at a big four, four kids, and a few businesses into the mix, and it's fair to say that she's had a bit on. After her children, I think it's fair to say that her other baby, Elan House of Wellness, the business dedicated to nourishing and supporting mothers, is one of her proudest projects to date. And as a paying customer, I think it should be. Her dry sweet and savoury packs were a staple in my early postpartum pantry, and her messaging encouraging rest and valuing the transitions of motherhood are incredibly important. Here, we talk disappointing parents, postnatal depression as a pretty fair response to the way we're meant to mother in western society, and how she navigates four children and a business. --- THIS WEEK'S PARTNER This episode of Ready or Not is brought to you by Mukti Organics, results-driven and award-winning skin care products made with certified organic ingredients & powerful actives.
