What Executive Recruiters Will Never Say Publicly07 Feb 202600:50:58

Send us Fan Mail

Senior executive hiring has fundamentally shifted. It is no longer a linear path of applying, interviewing, and receiving an offer. In this episode, we pull back the curtain on "closed-door" conversations with global executive recruiters and leadership assessors to reveal how C-suite and VP-level talent are actually sourced and evaluated. From the "trust recession" to the "with or without you" energy, we explore the unspoken signals that separate top candidates from the rest.

Key Takeaways

  • Hiring is Not a History Test: Senior candidates are not evaluated on their ability to recall facts and data dumps; they are judged on their influence, judgment, and executive thinking,
  • The Trust Recession: In an era of misinformation, being "easy to trust" is your greatest asset. High-level roles are often filled through warm networks and trusted referrals long before a job is ever posted online.
  • Adjacency Over Domain: When pivoting industries, specialized domain knowledge is less important than "leadership altitude"—the ability to align teams, simplify complexity, and orchestrate results regardless of the sector.
  • Diagnose, Don’t Impress: Shift your interview energy from a "pick me" mentality to a consultant’s mindset. Show up to diagnose the business’s "messy middle" and tension points rather than just listing your past achievements.
  • Strategic Compensation: Never anchor your salary expectations on your historic pay. Instead, benchmark against the market median and the specific risk and mandate of the new role.

Episode Highlights

  • 07:27 – The Compliance Step: Why posting a senior role online is often just a formality. Recruiters typically start with warm networks and trusted referrals before a role is ever published.
  • 14:09 – The "Context-Conflict-Cure" Framework: Move beyond standard storytelling to capture the "messy middle". Assessors want to know the "calculus" behind your decisions and what you learned from the friction.
  • 20:30 – Leadership Altitude vs. Domain: Why a 95% match on "leadership altitude"—the ability to create alignment and manage ambiguity—will always be prioritized over pure domain familiarity.
  • 35:10 – Mastering the Negotiation: A real-world case study on why you should never negotiate over email. Learn how to pivot from a low offer to a strategic conversation about market medians and total value creation.
  • 38:15 – The Role of Leadership Assessors: Why these trained psychologists look for "future capacity" and "executive altitude" rather than your technical history or resume chronology.

Why "Reliable" Isn't Enough: How to Become Indispensable11 Jan 202600:19:37

Send us Fan Mail

If you stopped showing up to work tomorrow, what would actually happen? Would revenue dip, or would your work simply be quietly reassigned?

In this episode, I ask the uncomfortable questions that every senior professional needs to sit with. We explore why the job market doesn't necessarily reward the most qualified person, but rather the person who solves the most urgent, painful, and expensive problems.

I discuss the 'Candy, Vitamin, and Painkiller' framework and why so many overlooked achievers get stuck in the 'Vitamin' box—seen as helpful and reliable, but not essential. You will learn how to shift your positioning to become a 'Painkiller' and why this is critical for your career acceleration. I also share four powerful lessons from the late, iconic James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader) on how to turn your weakest muscles into your strongest assets.

Book a Game Plan Call: If you are ready to identify the specific pain you solve and position yourself as a painkiller, book a one-on-one session: superchargeyourself.com/gameplan

Key Takeaways

  • The Candy, Vitamin, Painkiller Framework: Investors and businesses view roles in three categories. 'Candy' is fun but dispensable; 'Vitamins' are helpful and steady but not urgent; 'Painkillers' solve expensive, risky, or urgent problems. To be indispensable, you must be a Painkiller.
  • The Perception Gap: Many senior executives are already solving pain in reality, but they communicate like vitamins. If you describe your work as "supporting cross-functional teams" rather than "eliminating financial leakage," you are underselling your impact.
  • The PPF Strategy: I introduce my Painkiller Positioning Framework. Step 1: Identify the pain you solve (financial, time, or risk). Step 2: Articulate outcomes, not activities. Step 3: Position yourself as someone whose absence would hurt the business.
  • Lessons from Darth Vader: James Earl Jones had a severe stutter as a child and was not the first choice for Darth Vader. His journey teaches us that you don't need to be the first choice to be essential, and sometimes taking a step back (or a lower fee) can lead to a massive leap forward.

Episode Highlights

  • 01:00 – The Uncomfortable Question: What would happen if you stopped showing up to work tomorrow?
  • 02:58 – The 'Candy, Vitamin, and Painkiller' Framework: A breakdown of how businesses value roles, from dispensable "candy" to essential "painkillers."
  • 04:53 – Real-World Painkiller Examples: How finance, supply chain, and product leaders solve urgent, expensive, or risky problems.
  • 07:02 – The Painkiller Positioning Framework (PPF): A three-step strategy to identify the pain you solve and articulate outcomes over activities.
  • 10:37 – Lessons from James Earl Jones: How the voice of Darth Vader turned a childhood stutter into his greatest strength.
  • 14:02 – Strategic Steps Back: Why a temporary dip in pay or title can set up a long-term career leap.

Our guest in this episode is one of the most inspiring corporate leaders from India, who has built a career in industries spanning cars, steel, helicopters, and consulting. Bharat Wakhlu’s 35-year career brings you many insights and lessons on how to be successful in your own career, while never compromising on your values or humanity.

Set up as a trading firm in 1868, the Tata group today is a $106 billion behemoth that includes companies such as Tata Motors (owner of Jaguar and Land Rover), Taj Group of Hotels, TCS, Tata Steel etc. Chances are, if you asked anyone in India which company they would like to work in, Tata would be one of the first names on their minds.

What does it take to get hired in the Tata Group? Bharat didn’t just get a top job at Tata Motors, but was also selected for the elite and highly selective leadership program called Tata Administrative Service (TAS); going on to build an illustrious career in Tata’s steel business.

In this insightful conversation, Bharat shares:

 - What made him stand out during university applications to the hyper-competitive engineering and management schools in India

 - How does one get selected for TAS, one of the world’s most unique leadership development programmes inside a business organization

 - The detailed steps he took navigating internal networks to gain visibility and practice ‘Positive Politics’

 - How he got recruited to head the Indian operations of a leading helicopter company, that makes the Marine-One helicopter flown by President Joe Biden

 - What made him leave the corporate world behind in 2016 and venture out on his own after a 35-year stint

 - How he got hired by his very first paying client

 - And some of the best leadership and networking advice you will ever hear.

I took copious amount of notes during this conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

My guest today teaches people how to fall in love with their work, just like they fall in love with their life partner.  It doesn't always happen overnight, but the effort it takes to get there is worth it.

Dr Benjamin Ritter has a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership with a focus on value congruence and job satisfaction, and knows a thing or two about our topic today.

In today's conversation on the How I Got Hired Podcast , Ben shares his own squiggly path and how that has led to his current success:

- Knocking on doors and got hired to work as a Graduate Assistant to finance his graduate program

- Turning a voluntary opportunity into a paying gig. What?

- Dealing with rejections for 2.5 years after graduation

- Getting hired for unusual jobs over the years, because he chose to say 'yes' to everything, make unforgettable memories and saved money for studies.
(Think zombie, mannequin at the museum etc!)

"Sorry, your position has been made redundant."

Similar to so many of you, this is what happened to Jay in May 2021. He lives in London, notorious for its high cost of living. Going back to his parents' home was not an option, because of the lockdown and for their own safety.

So, what did Jay do? What he does best: he made a video and posted it on LinkedIn.

Now, no matter what people say:

It takes courage to dance around on LinkedIn,
It takes courage to say: 'Hey I need a job, can you help?'
And it takes courage to do it in your own authentic style: which adopts genderless fashion.

Jay Beech did ALL three. The video that Jay posted has received nearly a million views on LinkedIn, 25,000 likes, and a lot of attention, some good, some not so good.

Here is the good. He got 30 interview calls and 8 offers. In just 3 weeks! All during a pandemic.

"On December 2nd, 2019, I was done. That day, I handed in my resignation for a job I spent my entire career wanting & working for.
The truth is ... I didn’t want to stay. My boss didn’t see my value, I wasn’t performing well & the culture, not a fit. At 56, after over thirty years in creative roles as VP at J. Walter Thompson, on the client-side & my last woo hoo as a Managing Consultant, I jumped back into the job market. Realizing all over again how painful & difficult the process was. That's precisely why I started Portfoliorocket.com."

“I’m never going to do business.”
*Goes and works at an aviation company and expands the business.

“I heard about this concept called Business School. Harvard has one? Cool!”
*Gets into HBS.

“I had 6 job offers during MBA campus interviews.”
*Takes the lowest paying job, with pretty much the worst interview experience, ever.

“I wanted to move to a country where they speak French or German”
*Gets transferred to a country where they speak neither.

Careers are built not by meticulously planning every detail, but by embracing unexpected and unimagined opportunities.

If you are looking for lots of laughs and lots of learnings, this is a conversation you cannot miss.

The episode is called: Embrace the Unexpected

My guest today: Brenda Bence has built mega brands for Fortune 100 companies like Procter & Gamble where she headed multi-million dollar brands, first based in the U.S., then in Europe and then in Asia.

Then in 2002, at her career peak, Brenda made the leap, and started her own coaching business, which now has offices in Asia and the US.

There’s so much in this chat:

32. Stefano Di Lollo: How to Redesign your Career15 May 202100:40:59

Send us Fan Mail

I don't know anyone who doesn't love a good reinvention story.
Especially career reinvention.

Think of the most famous people in the world, and they've reinvented themselves.
And ordinary people like you and me? Yes, us too.

But to go from industrial design, to creative strategy, to innovation, to teaching college students, to now helping leaders be the leader they want to be...

How do you even start?
How do you deal with that fear?
And can social media help or hinder?

To talk about all of this and more, I'm delighted to have Stefano Di Lollo on the podcast.

In this episode, Stefano shares the exact steps he took to leave a safe, well paying career in industrial design and the journey he took to the Leadership Coach and Facilitator path he enjoys today.

'Carpe Diem' is a famous Latin phrase roughly translating as 'Sieze the Day!'

Our next guest embodies this spirit and how!

What is it like to work out of a boat? Not on holiday, not for fun, but as your new permanent office? Are you ready to 'Seas the day'?

I invite you to google search the following:

a. Digital Nomad
b. Laptop lifestyle

I can bet you, the images that come up are of 20 something's on a beach with Ray Bans and a drink. Am I right?

The last person you would imagine leading a digitally nomadic life is a CEO with 25 years of senior corporate experience.

In his corporate career, Abel Staveren has held CFO and CEO positions in the shipping industry with postings in London, Singapore, Norway, Switzerland and Luxembourg

Now, Abel and his wife Adrienne travel full-time as digital nomads. They divide the year into three or four blocks, spending each block in a different country. In 2020, Q1 was spent in Stellenbosch South Africa, Q2 in Singapore, Q3 sailing their boat back from Scotland to the Netherlands and Q4 in Algarve, Portugal. They just arrived back from Portugal and are getting the boat ready to go sailing around the UK.

In this fascinating episode, Abel shares:

> The highly unusual circumstances in which he was hired at his first job

> What prompted him to stop traditional work where he needed to be physically present, and become a digital nomad - the answer will surprise you

> How he got hired by his first paying client

> His favourite career advice, which he learnt from the creator of the most famous syndicated daily comic strip in the world

> How a cuss word is the best piece of financial advice you've probably ever heard

Bob Burg is a hugely successful writer and sought after speaker who’s built his entire life’s work on the concept of GIVING.

24. Dirk De Muynck: From Saving Reputations to Saving Lives21 Mar 202100:47:06

Send us Fan Mail

This is probably one of the most unique career stories you would have ever heard.

Dirk De Muynck had it all: a cushy executive job at a large Swedish automotive giant, a comfortable life and wide acclaim as a manager of reputation. Till one day in 2014 when it was all taken away from him and Dirk had to re-invent himself.

One day, in the midst of a traffic jam, Dirk had an epiphany that not only changed his life, but the lives of hundreds of people in Belgium.

He moved from being a savior of reputations, to a savior of lives.

Dirk runs CoolXpress, a medical transport company, that uses motorcycles to  transport medical tissue, liquids and pharma products to hospitals. He and his team often race against time on Belgium’s hyper-congested highways to get donor body organs to operating rooms across the country.

In this special episode, Dirk talks about:
 - How a hand-written letter he sent started his career at Volvo in the 1990's
 - A bizarre interview with his future boss which didn't exactly go as he expected
 - How he handled the painful separation from Volvo after nearly two decades there
 - How he returned to an old, forgotten hobby that drove him, literally, towards his eureka moment
- How he pitched his business idea dozens of times facing rejection after rejection, until he saw success with one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations – the Red Cross

This is a very special episode which teaches us that we can reinvent ourselves at any time in our life. Don’t miss it!

23. Jeff Archambault: It's a small world, after all15 Mar 202100:45:57

Send us Fan Mail

Which is the dream company you always wanted to work for?

Many people say these two: Apple and Disney.

Jeff Archambault has worked with both of these iconic companies. A short stint at Apple, followed by a long and illustrious 25 year career at the Walt Disney Company, where he served in leadership roles in Finance, Operations, Corporate Communications and CSR.

Drawing on all his hard earned lessons from the corporate world, he has reinvented himself as an Executive Coach, a Lecturer and a Mentor to startups. He is busier than ever. Which made it extremely hard to get hold of him for this podcast!

Jeff is a strong believer in the power of networks, relationships and in taking a 'global' view of your career. After all, its a small world - just like the name of every child's all-time favorite ride in Disneyland.

In this episode we talk with Jeff about:

- How armed with a Stanford MBA he pivoted from Wall Street to Disney, via Silicon Valley
- His expat experiences as an American moving to Paris to work in Apple and then Disneyland
- Dealing with hostile worker unions in France
- Reinventing himself as a lecturer, coach and startup mentor after a 40 year corporate career
- Dollops of his best advice for ambitious career professionals

And who do you see running that truckwash place?

Open your eyes now.

I bet the last thing you pictured is a petite, determined and no-nonsense WOMAN!

This is a very special episode, released on International Day of Women's Rights,  where Bouchra Hashassi shares her very unique story:

- Navigating a career in Banking and becoming a Mom at a young age simultaneously
- Taking private diction lessons so that her native accent was almost wiped out when she spoke Dutch
- How she got the idea to start a truckwash company (hint, like with most ideas, it was a very personal reason)
- How she handled sexism and racism on daily basis in a highly male dominated industry and continued to push through
- How her truckwash company became the largest upon its launch in the entire Belgium and Netherlands

14. Ramji Srinivasan: Play to your Strengths10 Jan 202100:43:57

Send us Fan Mail

In 2011, India won the Cricket World Cup after a long wait of 28 years.  11 players made 1.3 billion people rejoice.  My next guest was the Strength and Fitness coach of this team.

What a dream job to have!

Ramji Srinivisan is a Strength & Conditioning Coach who has trained the who’s who in the sports world:
-the world’s best cricket players like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli,
-Narain Kartikeyan in the Super Formula Grand Prix in Japan
-and many rising stars in tennis, badminton, sailing, fencing and other sports.

Given the pandemic last year decimated the fitness industry by closure of gyms, it has also led to an increased interest in personal fitness and wellbeing, which could very well see a major revival and exponential growth of careers in this sector in 2021. The rise of fitness at home through companies like Peloton, Gymshark & Echelon is just one indicator of the growing demand.

Consequently, these days Ramji is in very high demand, so I was excited for him to come to the podcast and share with us his career journey.

In this conversation, Ramji shares:

- How he made a career pivot at the age of 29 under challenging personal circumstances
- How he open up a fitness center and got his first client: a famous tennis player
- How he got hired as the strength and fitness of the Indian cricket team
- How he trained this team to win the Cricket World Cup in 2011
- Some juicy tidbits about the leadup to the big day
- The future of the health and fitness industry
- and so much more.
