Ep. 90 - Fulani Nomads - Faith Under Fire17 Dec 202501:06:05

In this episode Matt interviews Peter who spent years working in the Sahara desert amongst one of the most populous unreached Muslim people groups in the world, the Fulani.

It's an amazing story of dreams & discipleship, baptisms & betrayal, polygamy, malaria, imprisonment and death threats. But in spite of all the troubles, the church is born and begins to grow in remarkable ways.

Some of the books that Peter recommends are:

Glenn Schwartz, When Charity Destroys Dignity; Jean Johnson, We Are Not the Hero; Jonathan Bonk, The Realities of Money and Missions; and from a non faith-based perspective: Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert, When Helping Hurts

Ep. 81 - Befriending Freedom Fighters17 May 202501:19:14

60 million Pushtuns live in Pakistan and Afghanistan. They are a people admired for their generous hospitality but feared for their warrior culture. It is often said that they are 'the best of friends and the worst of enemies'.

In this episode Matt talks with an old friend and mentor, Dr. Len, who lived in Peshawar, Pakistan among the Pushtuns for many years with his family. He learned their language, their proverbs, their poetry - and how to share the good news of the Lord Jesus with them.

Len exudes biblical wisdom and grace and a deep passion for those with little or no access to the gospel.

Hear about how Len and Debi served the poor, regularly hosted the Mujahideen, the Freedom Fighters for dinners at their home, and how they helped Afghans arriving in the USA begin to adjust to a completely new culture.

Ep. 79 - My Prison. God's Silence.05 Apr 202501:22:42

NB. This is a story of abduction by extremists and there are mentions of torture. In that regard, it is not suitable for younger children.

In this episode we meet 'Jonathan' whose story is somehow chilling, gripping and inspiring all at the same time.

His imprisonment by Islamic extremists lasted for many months and, for most of that time, he never knew whether execution or release was the more likely outcome.

Contrary to his own expectations, he wrestled again and again with despair and with his inability to sense God’s presence or to hear his voice.

But eventually he was released and you can hear one of the most honest and faith-building stories you're ever likely to hear.

Ep. 78 - Overcoming Fear (ft. Jamie Winship)23 Mar 202501:05:09

In this episode Matt interviews Jamie Winship.

Jamie tells some amazing stories from when he served in law enforcement in the Washington DC Metropolitan area, including a miraculous revelation during an active kidnapping case.

He then goes on to explain how the Lord led him and his wife, Donna, to serve overseas and invite Muslims into the kingdom of God over many years in Indonesia, Iraq and Jordan.

Jamie argues strongly that we should use biblical terms around the kingdom of God, rather than ‘conversion’ when talking about Muslims coming to Christ. He shares mistakes he himself made in his early years on the field.

He also shares how the Lord taught him to love his ‘adversaries’, step into obviously dangerous situations (like a car full of Muslim extremists who wanted to execute him) and how to have a godly impact on diaspora Muslims in the West.

Ep. 77 - Inviting Muslims To Hear God’s Voice (ft. Donna Winship) 12 Mar 202501:09:12

In this episode Matt interviews Donna Winship. She and her husband Jamie spent 25 years living and working in the Muslim world: Indonesia, Iraq & Jordan.

In those locations their greatest joy was seeing Muslims discern the voice of God, enter into the kingdom, be healed and follow Jesus. Donna shares how they learnt so much about faith and mission from their own mistakes, from fellow workers and from painful trials (team-mates in Indonesia who were stabbed, others in Iraq who were shot and killed, a court case against Jamie for breaking Sharia law etc.).

In the midst of it all, they have come to discover their God-given identity and His purpose for them and for the nations, something they now teach others how to do through their ministry called Identity Exchange

Donna also tells how she came to follow Jesus from a Jewish family background, with fascinating insights for those who work with Muslims or Jews.

NB. This episode contains one harrowing story of sexual violence. In that regard, listener discretion is advised and it will not be suitable for younger children.

Ep. 75 - Should I Stay or Should I Go?13 Jan 202500:45:57

In this episode Matt talks with an old friend from the earthquake relief work in Pakistan. Andy Kampman grew up in rural Iowa, but in the winter of 2005 he responded to a call to spend a few weeks building shelters in the Pakistani Himalayas for the thousands who had lost their homes. Those weeks were hugely significant for Andy in terms of growing to love Muslims and wanting to share the good news with them.

Andy shares various stories from times he spent in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Lebanon and how the Lord actually called him to stay in the USA - to motivate, encourage and mobilise others to go to serve amongst the least reached.

Now based in Texas, Andy is part of a church that has, quite amazingly, sent out around 300 long-term workers in the last 15 years!

He also runs an organisation called Launch Global, which prepares and equips workers to thrive on the field and partners with churches to help them send effectively.

Ep. 74 - Women Who Risk (ft. Joann Doyle)30 Dec 202400:53:41

**WARNING**
This episode contains harrowing stories of domestic abuse and suicidal thoughts, so is not suitable for younger children.

This episode's special guest is Joann Doyle, co-author of 2 books: Women Who Risk, Secret Agents for Jesus in the Muslim World and Breakthrough: The Return of Hope to the Middle East. She is also the President and Founder of a ministry called Not Forgotten, which is all about bringing the good news of Jesus to Muslim women.

She and her husband, Tom Doyle, whom I interviewed a few months ago, have worked in many Middle Eastern countries and have gathered numerous remarkable stories of faith, miracles and persecution.

We discuss secret church, dreams and visions and many examples of women in the Middle East prepared to suffer the ultimate cost for following Jesus.

Ep. 73 - Fleeing Genocide, Finding Jesus20 Dec 202401:11:08

In this episode we meet 'Jacob', who has served in a very poor part of East Africa with his wife and four kids for more than a decade.

The refugees there that they live amongst have suffered terribly from a genocide that has led to the displacement of millions from their homeland. But in the midst of the pain and the trauma, many Muslims there are questioning the faith that they have been brought up in and looking for something else.

We discuss the challenges of living far away from a hospital, when dealing with typhoid, malaria, measles etc. - learning to find beauty amidst the brokenness and how life as a missionary is glorious, but not glamorous.

Ep. 72 - Saunas, Skiing & Spirits (Life in the Caucasus)02 Dec 202401:10:01

**WARNING**
This episode contains a harrowing story of domestic abuse, so is not suitable for younger children.

In this fascinating and unusual episode Matt talks to 'David & Abigail', a couple who spent many years in the mountainous post-Soviet Caucausus region.

Ministry to Muslims in this part of world is quite different to life in the Middle East or South Asia, with an entrenched drinking culture to navigate and regular saunas for the men, as well as the opportunity to go skiing in the holidays.

Topics discussed include prayer, beaurocracy, public displays of affection, court cases, witchcraft and bible translation.

Ep. 71 - Learning from the Church in Iran (ft. Phil Moore)10 Nov 202401:05:28

This week Phil Moore, church leader and author of the excellent Straight to the Heart Bible Commentary series, joins Matt to discuss his most recent book, called The Forgotten Manifesto of Jesus, in which he shares stories and lessons learnt from the revival in Iran and its overflow in other nations.

Post Covid 19, Phil moved on from leading a large and thriving church in SW London to focus on taking the gospel personally into the streets, bars and council estates in his neighbourhood, where he's looking to meet those who would not be likely to come to church. He has been inspired, mentored and taught by the leaders of the underground Iranian church who have drawn him back to some of the key teachings of Jesus in the gospels about mission.

Phil challenges the church in the West to adopt a humble posture, to learn from where the church is growing and to consider radically different models of disciple-making that we have been used to.

Ep. 70 - The Church of the Olive Grove21 Oct 202400:56:54

In this episode we meet Dr. Pat Brittenden.

Pat grew up in Algeria, served in Tunisia and has recently completed his PhD on the emerging Muslim-background church of North Africa. He works now for the Hikma Partnership, a partnership committed to encouraging BMB (Believers from a Muslim Background) research and writing.

Pat shares some of the lessons learned from his years in Tunisia, amazing stories from colleagues around the 'Muslim world' (including an embodied visitation of Jesus to some Bedouins in Libya) and much more.

He and his wife, Joann, served in many Middle Eastern countries and have written about the stories of those they have met along the way, particularly Muslims who have had dreams and visions of Jesus or have suffered for their faith.

Tom is now the President of Uncharted Ministries, who produce the excellent video series of Muslim Background Believer testimonies, called I Found the Truth.

In this episode you’ll hear stories of a martyrdom in Saudi Arabia, a miraculous deliverance from a firing squad, incredible bravery in Gaza and various dreams of Jesus.

Ep. 68 - Seeds From the East: The Chinese Missional Impact21 Sep 202400:56:03

This episode is the 3rd one that we have done recently with diaspora immigrants to the West (2nd or 3rd generation) who have gone overseas as church-planters. We’ve had a Nigerian Brit, a South Asian from the USA and now a Canadian of Chinese heritage.

Dr. M describes 10 benefits/blessings of being Chinese and working among Muslims. He highlights some of the challenges of working and ministering in ‘shame & honour’ cultures. And he describes how important it is to understand that Muslims come from very different political, cultural and theological contexts.

If you would like to broaden your reading base, Dr. M recommends:
1) Watchman Nee The Normal Christian Life or Sit, Walk, Stand or The Spiritual Man

2) Wang Ming-Dao A Stone Made Smooth or A Call to the Church or Spiritual Food

3) works by Philip Teng, John Sung or Thomas Wang... the latter of these three will have more available in English than the others.

Ep. 65 - The Insanity of Obedience (ft. Nik Ripken)06 Jul 202401:08:09

In this episode we hear the story of Nik Ripken.

Nik and Ruth spent over 30 years obeying Christ’s command to share Jesus across the globe. After 7 years in Malawi & South Africa, they moved to Nairobi, Kenya to begin work among the Somali people, in the context of war and famine.

Many Somali believers there suffered for their faith. Most were martyred. Near the end of the Ripken’s tenure among the Somalis, their 16-year-old son died.

One year later, the Holy Spirit led the Ripkens to begin a global pilgrimage to learn from believers in persecution how to recapture a biblical missiology of witness and house-church planting in the midst of persecution and martyrdom. Currently the Ripkens have interviewed over 600 believers in persecution, exceeding 72 countries. Sitting at their feet, the Ripkens learned from the suffering church how to thrive amidst suffering, not merely survive.

Ep. 64 - A British-Nigerian Missionary to Muslims22 Jun 202401:12:44

In this episode Matt hears from Ola, a Nigerian-Brit who grew up in the UK. Expelled from school, he got caught up in the drug scene in London, before coming to Christ as a young man. He then became a rap artist, before sensing the Lord calling him to the nations.

Ola shares honestly about the difficulties of moving to the country of his parents and grandparents to do church planting, before spending many years in the Middle East. Malaria, threats of curses, debates with Imams all were challenges he had to face.

He also has a powerful word for the diaspora black churches in the West.

(Apologies for the sound quality in this episode. We've had to alter the voice somewhat to protect the identity of 'Ola' and there were some other technical issues during this interview!)

Ep. 63 - The Turkish Tattoo Artist09 Jun 202400:55:11

In this episode Matt talks to Andy McCullough, a church leader and author in the UK who spent many years doing evangelism and church-planting in Turkey/Turkiye.

Although from a Syrian family, he grew up in Yemen and came to faith when his father (hoping he'd become less fanatical) gave him a bible.

He shares the journey of how his family reacted, the difficulties of finding other believers to fellowship with and his current ministry to reach others from a Muslim background online.

For Arabic speakers, this is Badr's FB account for those interested in exploring the message of Jesus.

Ep. 88 - From Shame to Sonship (ft. Shahriq Khan)18 Oct 202500:54:36

In this episode we meet a young ex-Muslim called Shahriq Khan, who grew up in New York to immigrant parents from Pakistan and India.

Shahriq in many ways embodied the American dream, the son of immigrants who achieved great success in education and business. But then he began to question the faith he had been raised in. And his searching led him to Jesus.

His story has not been without many trials, including rejection, criticism and pressure from his family and friends to come back to Islam, and a season of partying that led to a period of deep depression and hopelessness.

But the Lord’s kindness and grace has drawn him back into great community, where Shahriq testifies to a journey of healing and deliverance, growth and discipleship – and a huge heart to bring the gospel to Muslims and to teach others how to do so.

Ep. 60 - The Insanity of God (ft. Ruth Ripken)27 Apr 202401:01:15

In this episode we hear the story of Ruth Ripken.

Ruth and her husband, Nik, spent over 30 years obeying Christ’s command to share Jesus across the globe.

Ep. 58 - Monkeys on the Roof23 Mar 202400:31:04

Taken on a trip to Jordan by her father when she was 14 years old, Becky spent time with Palestinian refugees and was deeply impacted by them and the work of the missionaries there.

But it was India which captured her heart a few years later, with its incredibly friendly and hospitable people, its amazing food and, most importantly its huge need for gospel workers.

In this episode we hear about how God's love for all people and Becky's adventurous spirit have combined to shape the life of a young lady from Liverpool.

Ep. 57 - Motorcycles & Mission09 Mar 202400:46:06

In this episode we meet John from Canada, an intrepid adventurer turned missionary.

In his youth he rode his motorbikes across North America, Europe & the Middle East – most often sleeping under the stars. He had various accidents too, including one in which he broke his neck.

But when the Lord called him to take the good news to Muslims, he ended up living in Asia for 30 years!

And there in the tropics, John's love of adventure and water sports became what God would use to establish him in business, to give him many friendships with local Muslims and no end of gospel opportunities.

His is a fascinating story of adventures, calling, unreached Muslim people groups, betrayal, deportation, redeployment & resilience.

Ep. 56 - The Holy Land23 Feb 202400:58:11

The conflict between the Israeli governement and Hamas has surfaced once again these past several months - with the kidnapping of Jewish civilians, the bombardment of Gaza, the terrible loss of life, the constant fear and the international community deeply divided in how to respond.

In this episode we hear from Charlie, who lived with her family in Jordan and East Jerusalem for several years. She made friends with Arab-Israelis, Palestinians, Jews and Christians alike, praying all the time for reconciliation between 'enemies' and for many Muslims to find hope and peace in the Lord Jesus.

She also shares about returning to the UK and ministering to immigrant and refugee communities, some of whom it turned out were from the very neighbourhood she had been living in.

Ep. 55 - 7 Days in Türkiye09 Feb 202400:41:06

Most of our guests have been 'on the field' for years, since we at Frontiers are all about long-term engagement with unreached peoples, i.e. going deep into language and culture to be as effective as possible in making disciples and planting churches.

But today's young guests report back on a recent short-term mission trip that they went on in Turkey (Turkiye) that lasted for only a week.

Hannah and Lucy were sent out on a team to experience the 'Muslim world', to go to a remote town where there are no known believers, to pray and see who God would lead them to. Where would they stay? Would their reception be hostile or welcoming? What kind of spiritual formation would God be doing in them?

Ep. 54 - Sisters of the Sahara19 Jan 202401:00:52

In this episode we meet Naomi, a young Brit who has dedicated her life to sharing Jesus with Muslims in Africa.

What happens when a friend's roof is blown off in storm? Will God provide? Should Naomi give her the money for it? How should she deal with bats living in her bathroom?!
How did some of the new believers from a Muslim background show Naomi what it really means to obey and boldly live out the teachings of Jesus in their context? How should she deal with some of the men in the neighbourhood catcalling and harrassing her?

You'll certainly be inspired and challenged as you listen to Naomi's experiences of life in the desert.

Ep. 53 - The Kurds of Iraq05 Jan 202400:47:50

In this episode we hear from J, who spent 11 years with his family in Northern Iraq living amongst the Kurds.

We discuss ISIS (aka Daesh / the Islamic State), the connections that the Kurds have with the ancient Medes (as mentioned in the Bible), eco-tourism and archaeology, and the role that statehood (or lack of it) has for the Kurds.

We also discuss the Californian, Roger Cumberland, a missionary to the Kurdish people who was martyred in 1938. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Cumberland

NB. Kurdistan is a term that Kurds may appreciate since it speaks of their dreams and aspirations for unity and statehood, but for others in Turkiye, Iraq, Iran & Syria it is a term imbued with a very negative political meaning, one that relates to separatism and division.

Ep. 52 - The Iranian Church (ft. Mojtaba Hosseini)02 Dec 202300:33:41

44 years ago there were only a few hundred believers in Iran from a Muslim  background. Now the number is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands!

Iranians (or Persians) are coming to Christ in amazing ways all over the world - not only in diaspora communities, but also inside the deeply conservative Islamic Republic, in spite of the country's strict laws against owning a Farsi bible and sharing the Christian faith with others.

Often Christian leaders have been arrested, interrogated, and imprisoned in the nation’s notorious Evin prison. And our guest in this episode is one of them.

Mojtaba Hosseini has a remarkable story of coming to faith in Iran as a young man, along with some of his family members. His underground church was raided twice by officers from the intelligence services. He was arrested and spent several years in jail.

Persecution and suffering are often part of the story of the emerging church in places hostile to the good news of Jesus. But so are perseverance and mighty works of God. This is one of those stories.

Ep. 87 - Guns Under The Bed (Stories of Darfur)04 Oct 202501:06:40

In this episode we meet Yasmeen, a lady from rural Switzerland who has spent more than twenty years in Africa.

You’ll hear about bold African evangelists forced to dig their own grave for preaching in a certain village, the beginnings of a movement to Christ in Darfur (in the midst of years of horrific violence and civil war), the smuggling of bibles in peanut sacks, and how Yasmeen’s husband was regularly interrogated by the police.

This is a powerful story of incarnational love, of unlikely friendships, of Muslims finding the truth about Jesus, of hope for hopeless refugees in Sudan.

Ep. 51 - 30 Years in the Middle East18 Nov 202300:52:46

In this episode Matt interviews 'Hope' who, with her family, has lived and served in 4 different Middle Eastern countries over the last 30 years.

Hope talks about how her Middle Eastern experiences have brought a greater understanding of the original context of the Bible, how she uses stories to bring good news to her Muslim friends and neighbours and how God's Word has sustained her and encouraged her to keep persevering even in her first decade of not seeing much fruit and through expulsions and relocations.

They also discuss cockroach infestations, karaoke and raising kids in cross-cultural environments.

Ep. 50 - Meeting My Husband’s Killer (ft. Emily Foreman)27 Oct 202300:59:55

Emily’s husband, Stephen, had given her a well-read copy of Foxe’s Book of Martyrs on their first date. And a few years later, while they were serving in Northern Africa, he was shot and killed by Al Qaeda terrorists.

In this episode Emily shares some of her story, describing the love and mission that God had given both her and Stephen for the people of that part of the world, the tragic loss she and kids experienced when Stephen was killed, and her experience of and trust in the ongoing grace and goodness of God.

You’ll hear what happened when, a few years later, while working with a medical team in one of the local prisons, she met the man who had murdered Stephen.

Ep. 49 - Indonesia – 230 million Muslims14 Oct 202301:00:57

Indonesia contains more Muslims than any other country in the world – more than 230 million. And that’s why José, a young man from Latin America, decided to join a Frontiers team there, because the need is so great.

In this episode José shares about the challenge he faced to get his church to understand God’s global vision and their role in it, the joy of being mentored well in his preparation time and some great stories from his first 4 years on the field.

What happened when his friend interrupted his basketball game to tell him there was a ghost in their apartment block? Why is it that many Christians in Indonesia have little gospel interaction with the majority Muslim community?

The Latin theologians mentioned in this episode are :
C René Padilla, whose seiminal work is Mission Between the Times: Essays on the Kingdom, 2010 and Samuel Escobar, whose writings have been helpfully summarised by the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies (OCMS) here, entitled Samuel Escobar, An Anthology

Ep. 48 - Living in the Slums of West Africa28 Sep 202301:00:40

Although we at Frontiers believe that Jesus is worth risking everything we have: our comforts, our hobbies, our wealth, our careers, our reputations and even our lives – we also are strong believers in supporting our workers on the field well and helping them to navigate the traumas, conflicts or disappointments they might face.

In this episode Matt chats with Harriet who heads the Member Care team at the British office. She and her husband lived in West Africa for many years and raised their 3 kids there, so she knows what it’s like to serve overseas in tough places.

They discuss living with the poor (without running water and electricity), sharing a home with locals, dealing with cockroaches and mosquitos, a camel that smashed into their car, driving into a ditch at night… and much more.

Ep. 47 - Movement Thinking (ft. Cynthia Anderson)15 Sep 202301:11:05

In this episode we meet Cynthia Anderson, a YWAM missionary, speaker, trainer and author of a brand-new book called The Multiplier’s Mindset which tackles some of the main paradigm shifts we need to adopt if we are to catalyse Disciple-Making Movements.

Cynthia spent decades pioneer church-planting in Nepal & India, where, after years of frustration and self-doubt, she saw hundreds of new believers and many movements to Christ emerge.

She has also developed a video training course for those seeking to start discipleship-making movements and many of her trainees have seen incredible fruit.

We discuss the growth of the church in Nepal, her family’s expulsion from the country, her real struggle to enjoy India and some of the differences between making converts and making disciples.

Ep. 46 - Hundreds of Ethiopian Evangelists01 Aug 202301:14:10

In this episode you'll hear some incredible stories from Jeremy, a brother from Ethiopia. His life was one of loss, anger and drugs until he discovered Jesus. He then became a teacher and a pastor in the church, and later an elected official in the local government. And then his life direction changed again when God called him to reach out to Muslims in his country.

He was very resistant to this idea, not believing that a Muslim could turn to Christ, and it didn't start well. For 2 years he saw not one Muslim turn to Christ, but when he shifted his focus to another group of Muslims, remarkable things began to happen. He began a training programme for churches, through which teams of evangelists would go out to Muslim villages, proclaiming the kingdom of God and praying for the sick and demon-possessed. And over the years hundreds of Muslims have turned to Christ!

This is an amazing story of partnership between Frontiers workers and local believers, and a great testimony of the power of the gospel.

Ep. 45 - 15 Years In the Desert13 Jul 202301:07:17

How do 2 people with no particular overseas 'calling' end up living and raising their family for many years in the desert?!

In this episode we meet John, who’s been serving the poor in North Africa for 15 years.

We talk about some of the challenges that he and his wife have faced adjusting to North African culture, the false dichotomy of ‘salvation or social transformation’ and working with the marginalised, whether that’s vulnerable women, nomads, or the disabled.

He also shares how he got into App development, social media outreach and the joy of working alongside local Muslim-background believers.

Ep. 44 - The Celtic Way: Learning from Missionary Monks29 Jun 202300:56:41

What can we learn from the early Celtic Christian saints who brought the gospel to Scotland and Northern England: St. Patrick, St. Aidan, St. Columba & St. Cuthbert?

These were the wandering & worshipping monks & missionaries, the peregrine pilgrims, devoted to prayer, justice and sharing the good news amongst the pagan tribes.

And what about the Early Church Fathers & Mothers or the Nestorians who travelled deep into Asia?

Matthew Burden, our guest in this episode, is the author of a fascinating new book called Missionary Motivations: Challenges from the Early Church. He grew up in Brazil, spent time in Africa and now pastors a church in Maine, USA.

We discuss the attractional nature of the Desert Fathers, inaugurated eschatology, Christus Victor & much more!

Ep. 43 - From Islam to Christ to the Nations - Latif & Fatima's Story15 Jun 202301:04:05

In this episode we hear from 'Latif and Fatima' who grew up as Muslims in London in immigrant families.

They share about their arranged marriage (how they got engaged without ever having spoken with each other and how they found the relationship difficult and full of conflict for a long time), their journey to faith in Jesus, the traumatic rejection from their close family members and the grace and goodness of God they experienced in the midst of that.

They also talk about how the Lord clearly called them a couple of years ago out of London to live in the Middle East in their retirement years, to make disciples and plant churches.

Ep. 42 - Imprisoned in Türkiye (ft. Andrew Brunson)31 May 202301:14:59

Andrew Brunson has never been connected to Frontiers, but he joins us as a guest for this episode to share his incredible story of persecution and perseverance.

Accused of terrorism by the government, he spent 2 years in Turkish jails from 2016-2018, following more than 20 years serving as a missionary and pastor there.

He talks about the terrible suffering he and his family endured and how he almost lost his faith in the goodness of God, as his incarceration went on and on.

But he also challenges us to consider our own faith, our own theology and our own preparedness for such things.

He tells the full story in his book:

God's Hostage: A True Story of Persecution, Imprisonment, and Perseverance

Ep. 86 - 10 Myths about Mission & Missionaries07 Sep 202500:42:25

In this episode Matt & Mike do some myth-busting, challenging many of the half-truths and misunderstandings about mission in today's world.

Here are the 10 myths that they tackle:

1. There are churches all over the world. Our task is done.

2. There are too many needs around us.

3. Mission is everything we do. (Everyone is a missionary.)

4. We should just send money to local evangelists, who are more effective.

5. Mission is 'West to the Rest' (a neo-colonial endeavour).

6. Missionaries are super-spiritual - and I'm not.

7. Missionaries are super-gifted - and I'm not.

8. Missionaries receive a special call from God.

9. Missionaries have to give up their careers to go.

10. Missionaries live in mud huts.

Ep. 41 - Sports, The Sahara & Spiritual Attacks18 May 202300:57:29

11 years after receiving a call to do gospel work in the 10/40 Window, Ria was still in her home country, having a very successful youth ministry, but having almost given up on the dream of working among the least reached.

But then she heard a Frontiers worker asking for more people to come and do sports ministry in the Muslim world, and that was the prompt that God used to reignite the calling she had received years earlier.

In this episode you'll hear what Ria's first year has been like, moving from Central America to Northern Africa, initially encountering a wave of spiritual attacks and finding ways to share Jesus in her day to day life and work.

Ep. 40 - From Ireland to Tajikistan04 May 202300:47:32

How did Cate go from working in HR in the city of London to a life involving treading cow dung for fuel, trying to milk a cow, sleeping on a mat and washing clothes in the river in Tajikistan?!

How did she cope with living in a society in which women are regularly married off at 15 or 16 years old, beaten by their husbands for any perceived wrongdoing and have no option but to live a life of domestic servitude under the strict authority of the mother-in-law?

Some are called to start charities, tackle injustice at a governmental level, write books, become well-known in the church and in the world. Others are called to live a simple life of love, bringing the kingdom to one heart at a time, influencing individuals, families and communities - under the radar, away from the public eye.

Cate is one of the latter, an inspiring example of a cross-cultural gospel worker fulfilling our mandate to be the 'salt of the earth' and the 'light of the world'.

Ep. 39 - Refugees & Riots in Greece20 Apr 202301:02:16

In this episode Matt talks to Ben, who is currently studying at London School of Theology.

He spent his childhood years in Mauritania, Mali and Sudan, before moving up to the North of England.

And a few years ago, aged only 19, he spent 9 months on the Greek Island of Lesbos, working in the infamous Moria Refugee Camp with a group called Eurorelief.

Moria was the largest refugee camp in Europe until it was burned down in September 2020. It was called the worst refugee camp on earth by one MSF worker when interviewed on BBC, and others referred to it as an open-air prison and even a concentration camp

Ben shares about the challenges of being a volunteer there, of facing intimidation and outbreaks of violence. But he also shares how following Jesus often means going to tough places, enduring hardship and how the Scriptures give us very clear direction about how we should care for refugees.

Learn more about the work of Eurorelief here.
