Seeds From the East: The Chinese Missional Impact
21 Sep 2024
00:56:03
This episode is the 3rd one that we have done recently with diaspora immigrants to the West (2nd or 3rd generation) who have gone overseas as church-planters. We’ve had a Nigerian Brit, a South Asian from the USA and now a Canadian of Chinese heritage.
Dr. M describes 10 benefits/blessings of being Chinese and working among Muslims. He highlights some of the challenges of working and ministering in ‘shame & honour’ cultures. And he describes how important it is to understand that Muslims come from very different political, cultural and theological contexts.
If you would like to broaden your reading base, Dr. M recommends: 1) Watchman Nee The Normal Christian Life or Sit, Walk, Stand or The Spiritual Man
2) Wang Ming-Dao A Stone Made Smooth or A Call to the Church or Spiritual Food
3) works by Philip Teng, John Sung or Thomas Wang... the latter of these three will have more available in English than the others.

Monkeys on the Roof
23 Mar 2024
00:31:04
Taken on a trip to Jordan by her father when she was 14 years old, Becky spent time with Palestinian refugees and was deeply impacted by them and the work of the missionaries there.
But it was India which captured her heart a few years later, with its incredibly friendly and hospitable people, its amazing food and, most importantly its huge need for gospel workers.
In this episode we hear about how God's love for all people and Becky's adventurous spirit have combined to shape the life of a young lady from Liverpool.

Motorcycles & Mission
09 Mar 2024
00:46:06
In this episode we meet John from Canada, an intrepid adventurer turned missionary.
In his youth he rode his motorbikes across North America, Europe & the Middle East – most often sleeping under the stars. He had various accidents too, including one in which he broke his neck.
But when the Lord called him to take the good news to Muslims, he ended up living in Asia for 30 years!
And there in the tropics, John's love of adventure and water sports became what God would use to establish him in business, to give him many friendships with local Muslims and no end of gospel opportunities.
His is a fascinating story of adventures, calling, unreached Muslim people groups, betrayal, deportation, redeployment & resilience.

The Holy Land
23 Feb 2024
00:58:11
The conflict between the Israeli governement and Hamas has surfaced once again these past several months - with the kidnapping of Jewish civilians, the bombardment of Gaza, the terrible loss of life, the constant fear and the international community deeply divided in how to respond.
In this episode we hear from Charlie, who lived with her family in Jordan and East Jerusalem for several years. She made friends with Arab-Israelis, Palestinians, Jews and Christians alike, praying all the time for reconciliation between 'enemies' and for many Muslims to find hope and peace in the Lord Jesus.
She also shares about returning to the UK and ministering to immigrant and refugee communities, some of whom it turned out were from the very neighbourhood she had been living in.

7 Days in Turkey
09 Feb 2024
00:41:06
Most of our guests have been 'on the field' for years, since we at Frontiers are all about long-term engagement with unreached peoples, i.e. going deep into language and culture to be as effective as possible in making disciples and planting churches.
But today's young guests report back on a recent short-term mission trip that they went on in Turkey (Turkiye) that lasted for only a week.
Hannah and Lucy were sent out on a team to experience the 'Muslim world', to go to a remote town where there are no known believers, to pray and see who God would lead them to. Where would they stay? Would their reception be hostile or welcoming? What kind of spiritual formation would God be doing in them?

Sisters of the Sahara
19 Jan 2024
01:00:52
In this episode we meet Naomi, a young Brit who has dedicated her life to sharing Jesus with Muslims in Africa.
What happens when a friend's roof is blown off in storm? Will God provide? Should Naomi give her the money for it? How should she deal with bats living in her bathroom?! How did some of the new believers from a Muslim background show Naomi what it really means to obey and boldly live out the teachings of Jesus in their context? How should she deal with some of the men in the neighbourhood catcalling and harrassing her?
You'll certainly be inspired and challenged as you listen to Naomi's experiences of life in the desert.

The Kurds of Iraq
05 Jan 2024
00:47:50
In this episode we hear from J, who spent 11 years with his family in Northern Iraq living amongst the Kurds.
We discuss ISIS (aka Daesh / the Islamic State), the connections that the Kurds have with the ancient Medes (as mentioned in the Bible), eco-tourism and archaeology, and the role that statehood (or lack of it) has for the Kurds.
NB. Kurdistan is a term that Kurds may appreciate since it speaks of their dreams and aspirations for unity and statehood, but for others in Turkiye, Iraq, Iran & Syria it is a term imbued with a very negative political meaning, one that relates to separatism and division.

The Iranian Church (ft. Mojtaba Hosseini)
02 Dec 2023
00:33:41
44 years ago there were only a few hundred believers in Iran from a Muslim background. Now the number is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands!
Iranians (or Persians) are coming to Christ in amazing ways all over the world - not only in diaspora communities, but also inside the deeply conservative Islamic Republic, in spite of the country's strict laws against owning a Farsi bible and sharing the Christian faith with others.
Often Christian leaders have been arrested, interrogated, and imprisoned in the nation’s notorious Evin prison. And our guest in this episode is one of them.
Mojtaba Hosseini has a remarkable story of coming to faith in Iran as a young man, along with some of his family members. His underground church was raided twice by officers from the intelligence services. He was arrested and spent several years in jail.
Persecution and suffering are often part of the story of the emerging church in places hostile to the good news of Jesus. But so are perseverance and mighty works of God. This is one of those stories.

30 Years in the Middle East
18 Nov 2023
00:52:46
In this episode Matt interviews 'Hope' who, with her family, has lived and served in 4 different Middle Eastern countries over the last 30 years.
Hope talks about how her Middle Eastern experiences have brought a greater understanding of the original context of the Bible, how she uses stories to bring good news to her Muslim friends and neighbours and how God's Word has sustained her and encouraged her to keep persevering even in her first decade of not seeing much fruit and through expulsions and relocations.
They also discuss cockroach infestations, karaoke and raising kids in cross-cultural environments.

Meeting My Husband’s Killer (ft. Emily Foreman)
27 Oct 2023
00:59:55
Emily’s husband, Stephen, had given her a well-read copy of Foxe’s Book of Martyrs on their first date. And a few years later, while they were serving in Northern Africa, he was shot and killed by Al Qaeda terrorists.
In this episode Emily shares some of her story, describing the love and mission that God had given both her and Stephen for the people of that part of the world, the tragic loss she and kids experienced when Stephen was killed, and her experience of and trust in the ongoing grace and goodness of God.
You’ll hear what happened when, a few years later, while working with a medical team in one of the local prisons, she met the man who had murdered Stephen.

A Doctor in India
09 Sep 2024
00:54:13
Dr. T grew up in the USA, but her family is from South Asia and she has several Hindu and Sikh relatives.
After becoming a medical doctor and practising in the States, she felt the Lord direct her to using her skills in the 'Muslim world'. A series of events led her to India, the land of her forefathers.
She and Matt discuss Indian culture, medical mission and some of the challenges of 'returning' to a country where lots of your relations live!

Indonesia – 230 million Muslims
14 Oct 2023
01:00:57
Indonesia contains more Muslims than any other country in the world – more than 230 million. And that’s why José, a young man from Latin America, decided to join a Frontiers team there, because the need is so great.
In this episode José shares about the challenge he faced to get his church to understand God’s global vision and their role in it, the joy of being mentored well in his preparation time and some great stories from his first 4 years on the field.
What happened when his friend interrupted his basketball game to tell him there was a ghost in their apartment block? Why is it that many Christians in Indonesia have little gospel interaction with the majority Muslim community?
The Latin theologians mentioned in this episode are : C René Padilla, whose seiminal work is Mission Between the Times: Essays on the Kingdom, 2010 and Samuel Escobar, whose writings have been helpfully summarised by the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies (OCMS) here, entitled Samuel Escobar, An Anthology

Living in the Slums of West Africa
28 Sep 2023
01:00:40
Although we at Frontiers believe that Jesus is worth risking everything we have: our comforts, our hobbies, our wealth, our careers, our reputations and even our lives – we also are strong believers in supporting our workers on the field well and helping them to navigate the traumas, conflicts or disappointments they might face.
In this episode Matt chats with Harriet who heads the Member Care team at the British office. She and her husband lived in West Africa for many years and raised their 3 kids there, so she knows what it’s like to serve overseas in tough places.
They discuss living with the poor (without running water and electricity), sharing a home with locals, dealing with cockroaches and mosquitos, a camel that smashed into their car, driving into a ditch at night… and much more.

Movement Thinking (ft. Cynthia Anderson)
15 Sep 2023
01:11:05
In this episode we meet Cynthia Anderson, a YWAM missionary, speaker, trainer and author of a brand-new book called The Multiplier’s Mindset which tackles some of the main paradigm shifts we need to adopt if we are to catalyse Disciple-Making Movements.
Cynthia spent decades pioneer church-planting in Nepal & India, where, after years of frustration and self-doubt, she saw hundreds of new believers and many movements to Christ emerge.
She has also developed a video training course for those seeking to start discipleship-making movements and many of her trainees have seen incredible fruit.
We discuss the growth of the church in Nepal, her family’s expulsion from the country, her real struggle to enjoy India and some of the differences between making converts and making disciples.

Hundreds of Ethiopian Evangelists
01 Aug 2023
01:14:10
In this episode you'll hear some incredible stories from Jeremy, a brother from Ethiopia. His life was one of loss, anger and drugs until he discovered Jesus. He then became a teacher and a pastor in the church, and later an elected official in the local government. And then his life direction changed again when God called him to reach out to Muslims in his country.
He was very resistant to this idea, not believing that a Muslim could turn to Christ, and it didn't start well. For 2 years he saw not one Muslim turn to Christ, but when he shifted his focus to another group of Muslims, remarkable things began to happen. He began a training programme for churches, through which teams of evangelists would go out to Muslim villages, proclaiming the kingdom of God and praying for the sick and demon-possessed. And over the years hundreds of Muslims have turned to Christ!
This is an amazing story of partnership between Frontiers workers and local believers, and a great testimony of the power of the gospel.

15 Years In the Desert
13 Jul 2023
01:07:17
How do 2 people with no particular overseas 'calling' end up living and raising their family for many years in the desert?!
In this episode we meet John, who’s been serving the poor in North Africa for 15 years.
We talk about some of the challenges that he and his wife have faced adjusting to North African culture, the false dichotomy of ‘salvation or social transformation’ and working with the marginalised, whether that’s vulnerable women, nomads, or the disabled.
He also shares how he got into App development, social media outreach and the joy of working alongside local Muslim-background believers.

The Celtic Way: Learning from Missionary Monks (ft. Matthew Burden)
29 Jun 2023
00:56:41
What can we learn from the early Celtic Christian saints who brought the gospel to Scotland and Northern England: St. Patrick, St. Aidan, St. Columba & St. Cuthbert?
These were the wandering & worshipping monks & missionaries, the peregrine pilgrims, devoted to prayer, justice and sharing the good news amongst the pagan tribes.
And what about the Early Church Fathers & Mothers or the Nestorians who travelled deep into Asia?
Matthew Burden, our guest in this episode, is the author of a fascinating new book called Missionary Motivations: Challenges from the Early Church. He grew up in Brazil, spent time in Africa and now pastors a church in Maine, USA.
We discuss the attractional nature of the Desert Fathers, inaugurated eschatology, Christus Victor & much more!

From Islam to Christ to the Nations - Latif & Fatima's Story
15 Jun 2023
01:04:05
In this episode we hear from 'Latif and Fatima' who grew up as Muslims in London in immigrant families.
They share about their arranged marriage (how they got engaged without ever having spoken with each other and how they found the relationship difficult and full of conflict for a long time), their journey to faith in Jesus, the traumatic rejection from their close family members and the grace and goodness of God they experienced in the midst of that.
They also talk about how the Lord clearly called them a couple of years ago out of London to live in the Middle East in their retirement years, to make disciples and plant churches.

Imprisoned in Türkiye (ft. Andrew Brunson)
31 May 2023
01:14:59
Andrew Brunson has never been connected to Frontiers, but he joins us as a guest for this episode to share his incredible story of persecution and perseverance.
Accused of terrorism by the government, he spent 2 years in Turkish jails from 2016-2018, following more than 20 years serving as a missionary and pastor there.
He talks about the terrible suffering he and his family endured and how he almost lost his faith in the goodness of God, as his incarceration went on and on.
But he also challenges us to consider our own faith, our own theology and our own preparedness for such things.

Sports, The Sahara & Spiritual Attacks
18 May 2023
00:57:29
11 years after receiving a call to do gospel work in the 10/40 Window, Ria was still in her home country, having a very successful youth ministry, but having almost given up on the dream of working among the least reached.
But then she heard a Frontiers worker asking for more people to come and do sports ministry in the Muslim world, and that was the prompt that God used to reignite the calling she had received years earlier.
In this episode you'll hear what Ria's first year has been like, moving from Central America to Northern Africa, initially encountering a wave of spiritual attacks and finding ways to share Jesus in her day to day life and work.

From Ireland to Tajikistan
04 May 2023
00:47:32
How did Cate go from working in HR in the city of London to a life involving treading cow dung for fuel, trying to milk a cow, sleeping on a mat and washing clothes in the river in Tajikistan?!
How did she cope with living in a society in which women are regularly married off at 15 or 16 years old, beaten by their husbands for any perceived wrongdoing and have no option but to live a life of domestic servitude under the strict authority of the mother-in-law?
Some are called to start charities, tackle injustice at a governmental level, write books, become well-known in the church and in the world. Others are called to live a simple life of love, bringing the kingdom to one heart at a time, influencing individuals, families and communities - under the radar, away from the public eye.
Cate is one of the latter, an inspiring example of a cross-cultural gospel worker fulfilling our mandate to be the 'salt of the earth' and the 'light of the world'. (Matthew 5:13-14)

Refugees & Riots in Greece
20 Apr 2023
01:02:16
In this episode Matt talks to Ben, who is currently studying at London School of Theology.
He spent his childhood years in Mauritania, Mali and Sudan, before moving up to the North of England.
And a few years ago, aged only 19, he spent 9 months on the Greek Island of Lesbos, working in the infamous Moria Refugee Camp with a group called Eurorelief.
Moria was the largest refugee camp in Europe until it was burned down in September 2020. It was called the worst refugee camp on earth by one MSF worker when interviewed on BBC, and others referred to it as an open-air prison and even a concentration camp.
Ben shares about the challenges of being a volunteer there, of facing intimidation and outbreaks of violence. But he also shares how following Jesus often means going to tough places, enduring hardship and how the Scriptures give us very clear direction about how we should care for refugees.

A Palestinian's Encounter with Christ
06 Apr 2023
01:06:21
In this episode you’ll hear the amazing story of how Noor, who grew up in a Palestinian Muslim family, came to faith in Jesus through a dream, online chat rooms and a bible that someone gave her.
At one point, she had to flee the Middle East and seek asylum in the UK, which was a very traumatic series of experiences.
Now she serves as an evangelist in London, but her dream is to go back to the Middle East to be Christ’s ambassador there and to make disciples.
We discuss the asylum seeking process, London, the challenge of finding authentic community in church and much more!

Mental Health & Ministry
16 Mar 2023
01:04:59
Matt talks with the author and blogger, Mark Meynell, who currently serves as the Director of Langham Preaching (Europe & Caribbean).
Mark was previously on the senior leadership team at All Souls, Langham Place, has served in theological education in Uganda and, until recently, was Chaplain to several government departments/offices.
In this episode Mark shares very frankly about the PTSD and depression he has suffered, particularly following some harrowing experiences in Uganda. We discuss the challenges of mental health, especially for a follower of Jesus, as well as the roles that Scripture, friends, psychiatrists and medicine can play in tackling those challenges.
We also discuss the Prosperity Gospel, widows and orphans, the role of rage and lament, and whether we can trust leaders who walk without a limp!

From the Philippines to the World
02 Mar 2023
00:45:34
The growth of the church in Asia over the last 100 years (as well as in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa) is something to rejoice in. The Philippines is one such country, where remarkable transformation is happening, with the result that many Filipinos are now responding to Jesus’ call to take the gospel to the ends of the earth.
In this episode we meet Barnabas, a Filipino who has served in multiple countries in South-East Asia in various roles: going, praying, sending, mobilising, overseeing etc.
Did you know that 10% of all Filipinos work outside of their homeland, many of them in the Middle East – in countries very resistant to the gospel? We can learn a lot from our brothers and sisters in the Filipino church and we can be praying for God to continue to use them in mighty ways!

Nomadic Bedouins & Oil-Rich Arabs
02 Feb 2023
01:01:20
This week we meet 'Keziah', a Californian girl who moved to Jordan to live among poor, illiterate, nomadic Bedouins for 8 years before relocating to the Arabian Peninsular, where God called her and her husband to reach out to highly educated, wealthy elites.
These two different locations meant exchanging a world of sheep, goats and camels for skyscrapers, SUVs and designer clothes. But the task remained the same, to invite Muslims, with love and respect, to follow Jesus the Messiah.
It was a part of the world that she was initially frightened of, based upon the media and films she had been exposed to growing up in the USA. But her love for Arabs and that part of the world grew and grew, as she submitted to God's call on her life and experienced the Middle East for herself.
You'll hear about dreams, wearing the veil, friends who were murdered, an emerging fellowship of believers, a unwelcomed interference by other gospel workers that hindered the growth of the church and much more.

Iran: A Woman's Story
19 Jan 2023
00:46:41
In one of the most strict Islamic societies on earth, where the Ayatollah-led government enforces Sharia law and morality through the infamous Islamic Revolutionary Guard, an unprecedented movement to Christ among ordinary Iranian Muslims has been happening for the last 40 years.
In this episode Matt interviews an Iranian lady called Mariam.
She tells how, through dreams, through the Word of God, through satellite TV and through the people of God, she and several members of her family came to faith in Jesus.
She shares about the remarkable growth of the church in Iran despite the persecution, the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Iran’s 88 million people and some stories of the years she spent in Turkey sharing the good news with Muslims there.
For more about the persecuted and growing church in Iran, do check out these two films, called Sheep Among Wolves. There are some amazing testimonies of Iranian believers in these films, but some harrowing accounts too of the suffering they have had to endure. https://www.faistudios.org/sheep

In Qatar for the World Cup
22 Dec 2022
00:47:33
A team of guys headed into the Middle East to watch some football, but also (and far more importantly) to share the gospel with fans from the many Muslim nations represented in the tournament, most of whom will never have met a follower of Jesus.
Ben, Mike and Matt reflect on the adventures they had, the unique opportunities that this World Cup presented, Arab hospitality, the very real challenges and opposition that they faced and many wonderful gospel conversations.
Qatar is a country where evangelism is forbidden. So how did the guys get on?
Do check out the excellent animated video series www.journeytotruth.tv - it's an 8 part story about 4 Muslim guys exploring faith and is packed with humour, apologetics and biblical content and will inspire you to pray for Muslims in your neighbourhood and around the world. Life in Lebanon
11 Dec 2022
00:55:00
After growing up and studying in France and in the UK, Jonathan worked for Tearfund for a while before sensing the call of God to move to South Lebanon, to serve the Palestinian refugees community and to share Jesus.
He tells the story of how he narrowly escaped the bombing of Beirut airport during one of the conflicts between Hezbollah and Israel, as well as how a mysterious man gave him intel to help his friends on the ground get out.
He also talks about a wonderful emerging movement to Christ amongst the Palestinian Sunnis there, which even includes some Hamas leaders. The number of believers is now in the hundreds and several 'generations' deep.
All this did take its toll on Jonathan and his marriage - and he reflects on some of the mistakes he made.
He and Matt also touch on the controversial topic of Insider Movements. This is much misunderstood and maligned in some Christian circles - and often wrongly conflated with 'Chrislam', which is a syncretistic blending of Christianity and Islam. If you would like to read some helpful scholarly articles explaining some of the complexities of Insider Movement theology, please do email.

In this episode Matt meets Rahman and hears his story of coming to Christ and the impact that it had on his family.
This is why Jesus sends us out, even commands us to go. (Matt. 28:18-20)
Topics in this episode include: the fear of hell, TaeKwonDo, polygamy in the church, contextualisation and syncretism.

The Insanity of Obedience (ft. Nik Ripken)
06 Jul 2024
01:08:09
In this episode we hear the story of Nik Ripken.
Nik and Ruth spent over 30 years obeying Christ’s command to share Jesus across the globe. After 7 years in Malawi & South Africa, they moved to Nairobi, Kenya to begin work among the Somali people, in the context of war and famine.
Many Somali believers there suffered for their faith. Most were martyred. Near the end of the Ripken’s tenure among the Somalis, their 16-year-old son died.
One year later, the Holy Spirit led the Ripkens to begin a global pilgrimage to learn from believers in persecution how to recapture a biblical missiology of witness and house-church planting in the midst of persecution and martyrdom. Currently the Ripkens have interviewed over 600 believers in persecution, exceeding 72 countries. Sitting at their feet, the Ripkens learned from the suffering church how to thrive amidst suffering, not merely survive.

Journey To Jordan
03 Nov 2022
00:50:25
In this episode Jono shares about the years he and his family spent in Jordan & Lebanon.
Jono met about 700 taxi drivers over several years living in one city and he had around 400 gospel conversations. But he faced the same objections to the good news again and again: "You believe in 3 gods. The Bible is corrupted. Jesus is only a prophet..."
This led him to create a fantastic series of short animated videos - a funny and challenging story of how 4 Muslim guys find out about the Jesus. Such was the success of these videos that now the series has been translated into 12 major languages around the world, with more underway.
We also hear the story of 2 powerful dreams that friends of Jono had, in which they encountered Christ and became his followers.
Check out the brilliant animated series here: www.journeytotruth.tv It's an excellent resource for your Muslim friends and also for Christians who want to learn how to answer some of the most common objections to the gospel.

Inside India (Part 2)
20 Oct 2022
00:40:04
We continue to hear from Benjamin - a South Indian who, along with his wife, has spent many years proclaiming the good news of the kingdom to Muslims in North India, thousands of miles from home and family.
What happens to Ben when a Christian in his town insults the local Muslims and it gets into the newspapers?
How was running a chicken farm beneficial to Ben's gospel ministry?!
Why did Ben's friend, who used to laugh at him whenever he prayed, suddenly become interested in the gospel?
These are the voices that we in the West need to hear, the stories of brothers and sisters from the Majority World who have such wisdom, biblical insight and experience in cross-cultural work.

The Ministry of Tears
22 Sep 2022
00:55:27
**WARNING** This episode contains some harrowing stories of violence against women, so is not suitable for younger children.
We continue to hear stories from Afghanistan & Pakistan in this episode - this time from Roxanne, whose husband Jeff was interviewed a fortnight ago.
Roxanne shares her experiences in the land of the Taliban: the deep friendships that she made, the incredible miracles that she experienced and the many tears that she shed.
What happened to the lady who was so poor that she was desperate for someone to take her child away - to a better life?
Why was a miraculous healing not well received by the child's grandmother?
Hear about a woman, a great friend of Roxanne's, whose 13 children all died.

Angels in Afghanistan
08 Sep 2022
01:02:05
Jeff, a photographer, (& Roxanne, who we'll be hearing from in our next episode) have been on church planting teams in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan & India.
They have decades of experience and some jaw-dropping stories of God's power and protection.
What happened when an Afghan young man's father came to kidnap him and send him to to his death as a Jihadi on the frontlines, because he had become a follower of Jesus?
What happened when a extremist group came to attack a evangelistic Christmas pageant in Peshawar, Pakistan?
After Jeff nearly lost his life in a firefight, why did he have a real crisis of faith for about a year?
How did Jeff's Muslim friends try to protect him from evil spirits?
How do we respond when God does the very opposite of what we're praying for?

00:59:22
In this episode Matt interviews Ian Nicholson, one of the founding leaders of 24-7 Prayer and the Guildford Boiler Room (now Emmaus Road Church) and one of 24-7’s International leadership team.
The stories covered take us all over the world: to India, Austria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Russia, Romania, Bangladesh and Ibitha (Spain)!
Ian shares about coming to faith, being a youth leader and a church pastor in the UK and getting called by God into cross-cultural mission in his 20s. He particularly focuses on the years he spent smuggling bibles across the borders into Eastern Europe during the Cold War, whilst working with OM.

From Russia With Love
14 Jul 2022
01:08:17
The current situation in Ukraine has dominated world headlines for months and will, no doubt, continue to do so for a while, with so many being killed and displaced - and with no end in sight.
In this episode Matt interviews 'Nick', a Russian believer who is doing everything he can to support Ukrainian refugees in Russia. He shares about his experiences in the refugee camps, mobilising the church in Russia to respond and how he has taken several trips across the border to bring food to those starving in Mariupol.
He also talks about his other passion, reaching Muslims in Southern Russia and the Caucasus with the good news of Jesus, and shares some great stories of his experiences there.
We hope that this counter-narrative will inspire you and encourage you to pray and to consider how the Lord might use you in His mission to bless all nations and to seek and save the lost.

In the Home of Jihad (Part 2)
30 Jun 2022
00:41:44
What is the point of doing short-term mission trips?
Don’t they do more harm than good? Hit and run evangelism with no cultural understanding? Are they really a good use of time and money?
We at Frontiers are all about long-term church-planting teams, but we often introduce people to the Muslim world through short-term trips.
In this episode Matt continues his conversation with three young people who have recently come back from a week’s prayer trip to Turkey.
They describe meeting an incredible lady who came to faith in Christ through a series of visions and who started a church in her town, in spite of some serious opposition.
They also recount several conversations they had with Turkish young people, who they found to be surprisingly open to hearing about Jesus.

77 Days Behind Bars
09 Jun 2022
01:09:59
In this gripping episode Matt talks to Brian & Jeleta, as they recall some harrowing events from the years that they lived in Cairo, Egypt.
Brian relates how he was taken away by the police in the middle of the night from his home, leaving Jeleta and their one-year-old son behind. He and his friends were imprisoned for sharing the gospel with Muslims, making disciples, distributing bibles and church planting. They were told they would be locked up in prison for 5 years.
We also hear about a devastating loss that they experienced while in Cairo and how family and team were able to support them through it.
Other topics covered in this episode include contextualisation, the role of retirees on church planting teams and famous Arab hospitality.

A British-Nigerian Missionary to Muslims
22 Jun 2024
01:12:44
In this episode Matt hears from Ola, a Nigerian-Brit who grew up in the UK. Expelled from school, he got caught up in the drug scene in London, before coming to Christ as a young man. He then became a rap artist, before sensing the Lord calling him to the nations.
Ola shares honestly about the difficulties of moving to the country of his parents and grandparents to do church planting, before spending many years in the Middle East. Malaria, threats of curses, debates with Imams all were challenges he had to face.
He also has a powerful word for the diaspora black churches in the West.
(Apologies for the sound quality in this episode. We've had to alter the voice somewhat to protect the identity of 'Ola' and there were some other technical issues during this interview!)

Learning to Love Turks
26 May 2022
01:03:46
In this episode Matt talks with 'Diana' about her 25 years serving in Turkey.
As a Chinese-American woman, Diana has fascinating insights into Eastern cultures. She also talks about raising daughters in a Muslim context and how a godly marriage spoke volumes to many of her friends who lived under the constant threat of domestic violence.
She relates a frightening dream that her husband had, which God used to protect their family, a traumatic event for one of her daughters and deep friendship with Muslim ladies that often led to conversations about Jesus.
Diana also discusses times in Istanbul when she found it really hard to love those she had been called to serve and how she overcame that.

Gen Z: The Future of Global Missions
12 May 2022
00:38:09
In this episode Matt talks to three students, all buzzing with God’s heart for the nations and considering the call to go.
Zach, Lena and Astu (all in their 20s) are at the same university and doing an amazing job encouraging their Christian Union (CU) to reach out to international students, running all night prayer meetings and much more.
Astu also shares some stories from her childhood, growing up as a missionary kid in West Africa, on the edge of the Sahara Desert.
These guys have also all loved doing the MomentumYes Course, a free online 6-week global missions & discipleship course. It’s easy to access and is full of high-quality video content. Perhaps you could run the course with a bunch of your friends from church?

Moved to Tears: An American in the Arab World
28 Apr 2022
00:51:15
In this episode Matt catches up with Joe, an old friend who came to help with the shelter-building relief work following the huge Pakistan/Kashmir earthquake in 2005.
Since then, Joe and his family have lived in Pakistan and the Middle East, working among the poor and, over the last several years, with Syrian refugees.
They discuss the negative impact that geopolitics, money and NGO work can have on evangelism and church-planting efforts, the challenge of visa insecurity and the life of transition that many workers have to adjust to.
Joe is someone who combines a deep love for evangelism and church-planting with a life committed to serving the poor and those on the margins of society.
If your heart has been stirred and you'd like to give to one of our teams working with the poor, we always have opportunities available. For example, one team are involved in training and employment for young disabled adults in North Africa. Another team is currently raising funds to build a school and an educational centre (the latter especially focused on helping women to get employment).

A Jew to Muslims: Storytelling on the Frontiers (Part 2)
14 Apr 2022
00:47:03
In this episode we pick up where we left off from last week's interview with Martin Goldsmith.
Martin talks about the importance of storytelling and how parables can be reframed for an Islamic context.
He also talks about an occasion when some young men threw stones at him for talking about Jesus!
We discuss colonialism, slavery, gender stereotypes in other cultures and whether it's appropriate to use the name Allah when talking about the God of the Bible.
Martin Goldsmith is something of a legend in the UK, as an author, speaker and long-term missionary in South-East Asia. Now 87 years old, he has been married for 60 years.
He has spent his life studying & teaching God’s word and sharing the good news with people from all over the world. He is a brilliant storyteller and has a cheeky sense of humour!
