Vanyfox on Batida, Angolan Rhythms, African DJ Adventures and Making Deep Melodias
Season 3 · Episode 39
vendredi 5 décembre 2025 • Duration 01:13:08
Vanyfox is a DJ/producer taking the Portugal-born dance music genre batida to the world. Raised on the outskirts of Lisbon near the Quinta do Mocho neighborhood (home to many batida pioneers including Marfox and DJ Nervoso) and based in France, Vanyfox discusses his early memories and the emotions, experiences and production techniques that influence his sound, which borrows from trap, deep house and the rhythms of kuduro, kizomba and zouk. We talk about the deep life questions behind his Melodias e Choros EP, working with Montreal's Moonshine crew, his Angolan-Zairean heritage, the lineage of the coxes and foxes, his approach to DJing and his unique experiences traveling to Ivory Coast, Zanzibar, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia. Hosted by Vivian Host (aka DJ Star Eyes). For more info and extras, visit Ravetothegrave.org or Instagram @ravetothe.grave.
Paul Harrington on Acid House Ecstasy, Hooliganism and Finding Heaven and Hell in Ibiza
Season 3 · Episode 38
vendredi 10 octobre 2025 • Duration 59:18
Paul Harrington is a British raver with a story to tell. A story about getting arrested in Ibiza with hundreds of E's in a cereal box. A story about the London acid house spots of the late 1980s and early 90s and running with violent football firms until euphoric anthems and a night on the doves at Legends turned his life around. A story about trading Hummers for mangoes with Afghani arms dealers. This real estate dealer from Essex fell into the London club scene fast and hard, lived a wild life, crawled out of cocaine addiction in his 40s and is now writing an autobiography about the whole thing called Beautiful Chaos. While we wait for the book to emerge, I spoke to Paul about burning bright, turning up, burning out and his adventures with the E Team. Hosted by Vivian Host (aka DJ Star Eyes). Furacão, Pancadão & Proibidão: House of Pris on the Early Days of Baile Funk in Brazil
samedi 26 août 2023 • Duration 01:24:06
When 1980s electro and freestyle music from Miami, New York, and Los Angeles touched down in Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities, it ignited a wildfire in the minds of local DJs and soundsystem operators. Out of the hoods – in Brazil known as favelas – emerged the ass-shaking sounds of baile funk. You may have heard baile funk hits by Pablo Vittar, Diplo & MIA, and Karol G, but on this episode we're taking it way way back to the roots. Raised in Fortaleza in Northeast Brazil, Priscilla Cavalcante a.k.a. House of Pris joins me to talk about her experiences in first-wave baile funk and plays us some of the most important samples and beats that started the whole movement. We also talk about her baile funk party in Miami, Florida called Proibidae, the process of saving lost anthems of the 1990s, plus furacão, pancadão, and the wild wonderful world of Brazilian funk parties. Hosted by Vivian Host (aka Star Eyes). For more, follow @ravetothe.grave on Instagram and visit RavetotheGrave.org.
