After years of plummeting numbers, the World Wildlife Fund reported a 64% increase in the number of migrating monarch butterflies in Mexico this year. Do you know who this fellow is? He’s pianist, bandleader and band broker Jean Goldkette and you’ll hear from and about him in the third segment of this week’s show. I say in the intro to the segment that he was born March 18th, 1893 in Patras, Greece. but the date and place of his birth remain a matter of conjecture. May 18 of that year is the date Goldkette provided to the US government. He also claimed 1894, 1897, and 1899 as years of birth. Not only his date and place of birth are disputed, but he may or may not have been the same person as Constantin Goldkette, born in Avignon, France in 1895. He gave his own birthplace as Valenciennes, France. His mother, Angelina Goldkette, was of Danish birth. None of this, however, detracts from the fabulous music he made and you’ll hear three of his recordings not heard on the show before. We’ll also celebrate the birthdays of George Olsen, Mort Dixon and Frank Hutchison. And you’ll hear more from Rupe Biggadike. I didn’t have time to make the correction on this week’s show, but on last week’s show I completely left out the details on the first record in the segment about cake, “Cut Yourself A Piece Of Cake (And Make Yourself At Home.)” It was Joseph Samuels’ Orchestra with the vocal by Arthur Hall on Grey Gull 1172 recorded in June of 1923. It was also issued on the Banner, Regal, Broadway and Triangle labels. On this week’s show, as you might guess from the photo above, we’ll play some records about Odocoileus hemionus, the scientific name for the Mule Deer. There’s a huge controversy taking place on Catalina Island over the approximately 2,000 deer on the island, first introduced for hunting in the 1930s and you’ll find out a little bit about it. Do you know who this lovely lady is? Her name is Kristi Turner. She’s not a composer, lyricist or musician, so why is she featured in the playlist of this week’s Rapidly Rotating Records? Kristi is the co-founder, along with her husband Ross, of Guided Discoveries, where I had the pleasure of working for more than a quarter century. Ross passed away unexpectedly last October and I dedicated a segment of the November 2 show to him. Kristi passed away just two months later and today, February 15, her family, friends and co-workers are gathering for a celebration of her life. In the first segment of this week’s show, you’ll hear little bit about Kristi and a number of records about a couple of her interests, dude ranches and horses. Once again, for about the 15th time, Rita and I were in Rancho Cordova, California the week-end before Thanksgiving for the 39th Annual West Coast Ragtime Festival, put on thanks to the tireless efforts of many volunteers from the West Coast Ragtime Society. We had a fabulous time as always, seeing old friends, musicians and non, making new friends, listening to wonderful music performed by some of the finest musicians in the world, and enjoying plenty of fine food and drink. There was almost 120 hours of music over three days, and this show represents less that 1% of that music. It’s primarily 78 RPM records of tunes played at the festival along with several vintage piano rolls performed by the composers.
