Today we meet a nice slice of the splinter fraction! Russ Hillier, 34, based in Southampton, UK. he has played in bands for years, mostly guitar and some backing vocals. Music has always been a hobby and passion since his early teens, and a few years ago when his band split up. He wasn't ready to let the dream die. No longer with his bandmates, instead of forming another collective, he decided to take a solo route, which resulted in his transition over to hip-hop & rap. He started making beats around 2014/15, a real mess of genres, really just a hobby and outlet for his creative side. Once he was starting to feel okay with his production chops, he wanted to start bringing in vocalists - but didn't have confidence in his instrumentals alone. So he started laying down my own vocals on them. It sounded horrible, but he really enjoyed the process, letting go of his inhibitions in the vocal booth (literally a closet under the stairs, nothing glam) and started getting heavily into poetry in lyrics, wordplay, humor - all the stuff that makes up good, solid bars. He was trash at this too! But the enjoyment and his ignorance at the time meant I loved it, so he carried on regardless. Fast forward a year or two, he found a community within the makinghiphop subreddit cypher, where rappers are invited to lay down a verse based on a set theme & beat. This gave him a chance to get feedback on what he was doing. Things have changed over the years, but it felt like for the longest time he was one of the few UK frequenters of that competition. This gave him and edge in ways as his voice was very unique there, as most of the users seemed to be US-based. Maybe his shitty flows could be disguised as an accent thing, he dunno lol. But over the years, he made some solid connections, now he has done several collab projects, he's one of 4 pillars that make up the group "Nomadic Odyssey" and recently (since June 2021) he formed an offshoot of rappers from that community known as "Splinter Faction." Most of my time currently is spend working on collaborations with the Splinter Faction dudes. The group is 14-15 members strong, some more involved than others, but it means he's always got his work cut out for him, which is a great thing. He rarely have any time for writer's block these days, with multiple songs being worked on at any given time it's hugely helped me get organized and busy with consistently smashing out releases under the SF umbrella. The Sixth Letter is a product of a compulsion to create. In its early form, lead singer Marx Morta would piece beats together on any equipment he could get his hands on. Whether that was a sampler with about 30mb of memory bounced onto a cassette - to dated old computers from his first job in an office. Music had to be made by any means necessary. Marx’s love for hip-hop and breaks led to a foray into djing, and while preparing sets he would include some tracks of his own. The crowds didn’t realise that the music he was playing was his and were loving it, and that energy spurred a new focus & belief. After spending the majority of time making music by himself and as tastes and preferences ebbed and flowed - so did the production and song writing. Plays on BBC Radio 1 by the likes of legendary DJ's Steve Lamacq and John Peel quickly followed. A need to collaborate was felt, and band was what was required. The songs took a different shape once they were played by individuals, and re interpreted. This was exciting. Hip-hop’s influence is never far away in TSL’s song writing, with rap verses and bridges blending effortlessly into melodic choruses. While nu metal can be tagged on to The Sixth Letter’s style, it’s the more creative end of the spectrum that they’re akin to - bands such as Snot, Incubus & Deftones have made a big impression on the band. That and punk / rock with band members (former and current) having spent many a week in a van touring in bands of that genre. Its that 'DIY' ethic that started everything - and it has come full circle into 2021. MOURAD is a New Zealand Moroccan hip hop artist hailing from the Capital city, Wellington, Tawa specifically. Growing up in the outer area of Wellington, MOURAD began his musical journey by doing what every teenager who loves hip hop music does, started writing his own raps in his bedroom. With his friends also beginning to rap they would regularly have cyphers at lunch and after school, but MOURAD was quite reserved when it came to these cyphers as he would only occasionally partake in them, in his words “I was very self conscious about the stuff I said and if people would think it was good, so I refrained from sharing any of my art for a long time, only close people would hear stuff” As he matured into his late teens he kept making music but also grew deeper into the streets of Wellington as his needs and wants grew, during this time he would see many ups and downs but continued to make music dropping songs like “Got Me Going” “Feel Like” and “That Way” which created a small buzz in the city. After a 2 year hiatus from releasing music, MOURAD dropped his first come back single “Forever” with a captivating music video directed by 24k Media, this sees MOURAD use the city skyline as a backdrop to his everyday life, in this words “this is what we would do any day of the week, get the homies together, bring the whips out and go chill somewhere, only difference is I’m performing infant of these cameras” After releasing “Forever” MOURAD is back to show that he is just warming up, with an array of new releases ahead. Hailing from Edmonton, Canada - Ground Level Falcons are back with their 5th LP, ‘Skyline’. Release date : September 22nd, 2021. This album was the bands most challenging to release, due to the start/stop nature of the pandemic of the past 18 months. Despite the lockdowns and some lengthy gaps in practicing - the band put together, what they all believe to be, their strongest effort to date! The GLF camp is back to a full lineup : bassist Greg Kolodychuk and lead guitarist/keyboardist Adrian Armitage have both returned from a 3 and a 4 year absence, respectively. The last album both Greg and Adrian were a part of was 2017s ‘The New Wilderness’. Backing vocalist, Olivia Ostrom, appears on all the songs this time around - she had made her debut on 2019s ‘Good Living Foundation’ , appearing on the last 2 songs of that album. This album marks the 10-Year-Anniversary for the band, as well. The band started out in the fall of 2011. ‘Skyline’ is the bands first self-produced album to date; frontman Matt Gardiner took on the engineering & mixing. The band used the analog online mastering service ARIA Mastering for the 2nd straight release. The album is a wonderful blend of 60s/70s and grunge era music. They may be old school, but they ready to take on the new school! Give them a worthy listen before you know?
