Sparkschooling | Engaging Children in Music, Art, and STEM15 May 202400:44:41

In this week's episode of the podcast, we're talking with Rachel Figg, a trailblazer in the homeschooling world and the creator of Spark Schooling. As homeschooling parents, we recognize some challenges come with teaching children at home. This conversation focuses on sparkschooling, a novel approach to learning designed to ignite curiosity and engage students more deeply by integrating art, music, physical education, and STEM into daily learning activities.

The heart of sparkschooling lies in its curiosity-driven approach, tailoring learning to align with a child's natural interests. Rachel explains how Spark Schooling integrates non-traditional methods like using buckets and kitchen utensils to teach musical rhythms, or video classes for varied subjects to cater to diverse learning preferences and paces.

This method not only respects each child's learning journey but also fosters a supportive environment where learning is associated with joy and discovery rather than pressure and memorization.

Key Takeaways:
  • Curiosity-Driven Learning: Rachel Figg emphasizes the importance of fostering curiosity in children as a fundamental aspect of sparkschooling. This approach encourages students to pursue their own interests and questions, leading to deeper engagement and understanding.

  • Integrating Creative and Analytical Learning: Both Rachel and Colleen discuss the importance of combining left and right brain activities—such as art and STEM—into homeschooling to develop both creative and analytical skills in children, enhancing overall learning and problem-solving abilities.

  • Hands-On Experiences: The episode highlights the significance of hands-on learning experiences, like the real-life application of physics concepts in a homeschooling with horses class to understand inertia. This method helps cement knowledge through practical application.

  • Resource Accessibility: Sparkschooling is likened to a Netflix-like library where children can choose from a variety of activities based on their interests, all available in a simple, self-paced format. This accessibility makes learning adaptable and tailored to each child's pace and interests.

  • Higher-Level Thinking Skills: The discussion underlines the need to focus on developing higher-level thinking skills from an early age, moving beyond basic knowledge to analyzing, evaluating, and creating. This prepares children for complex problem-solving and independent thinking.

  • Low-Pressure Learning Environment: The sparkschooling program is designed to create a low-pressure, non-judgmental learning environment that encourages exploration and reduces the fear of failure, enabling children to explore new subjects and discover their passions.

  • Simple Integration of Diverse Subjects: Rachel suggests practical ways to integrate diverse subjects like music, art, physical education, and STEM into daily homeschool routines to ensure a holistic education that keeps children engaged and promotes well-rounded development.

  • Encouraging Physical Education: Physical activities are highlighted as crucial for children's education, not just for physical health but also for teaching persistence, coordination, and critical thinking through physical challenges.

  • Engaging and Fun Learning Activities: The episode emphasizes the importance of making learning fun and engaging through activities like using kitchen utensils as drumsticks to learn musical rhythm, which helps sustain children's interest and enthusiasm for learning.

  • Following Children's Natural Curiosities: Both host and guest stress the need for parents to pay attention to and nurture their children's natural curiosities, as this will lead to more meaningful and self-motivated learning, making education a joy rather than a chore.

RLL #223: Nurturing a Strengths-Based Approach to Learning in Homeschooling13 Dec 202300:29:42

A strengths-based approach to learning is exactly what our asynchronous kids need.  We may be tempted to focus on remediation in areas where they are "behind," but remember there is no behind; our kids learn every day.

It is so important to teach our children to use their strengths to help them overcome their weaknesses instead of allowing them to feel behind, always trying to catch up. In today's episode, Colleen talks specifically about why we should implement a strengths-based approach with our kids, and let go of the traditional, deficit-based model.

RLL 219: Finding Your Community with a Neurodivergent Family08 Nov 202300:28:54

We are raising kids who are learning and developing in ways that do not fit in with the typical milestones.  They may be reading at three, yet at ten are still struggling to find meaningful friendships.

We, as parents can, often feel isolation when raising neurodivergent children.  They notice that they are outliers, and we feel it, too.  That doesn't mean making connections is impossible, though! There are steps we can take, to help our family find their tribe and build a community.

In today's episode, Colleen will be talking about her experiences with co-ops, classes, and helping her neurodivergent family find community.

RLL #215: Helping Our Kids Set Healthy Boundaries04 Oct 202300:39:11

Today Colleen is talking about helping our children draw healthy boundaries, with the example of family members wanting a hug when our child is not comfortable giving one.  This question was submitted during one of the group coaching events in The Learners Lab, a Raising Lifelong Learners online community for neurodiverse homeschooling families.  Each month in the Lab Colleen hosts a group coaching night.  Parents can submit their questions ahead of time and Colleen will take the time to answer each one.

One goal we have for our neurodiverse kids is the ability to advocate for themselves as they grow older.  One of the best ways to do this is by honoring their needs.  Perhaps you have a child with a sensory struggle, anxiety around others, or becomes easily overwhelmed in new environments.  When we acknowledge their limits and draw healthy boundaries we teach our kids that it is healthy to know what they need and express it kindly to others.

RLL #209: Prioritizing Self-Care is Important for You and Your Kids23 Aug 202300:26:33

One of the most beautiful things about homeschooling is how we can adjust kid-to-kid, and year-to-year. It's also one of the things that messes with us as parents. It's inevitable when everything is functioning well, there's another change: developmentally, emotionally, physically and we find ourselves reevaluating again.  It can be hard, tiring, and wear us out.

That is why self-care is essential for those of us homeschooling differently-wired kids.

Check out the latest episode of the podcast! This episode dives into the idea of family routines and rituals and how they play a crucial role in building stronger family bonds and supporting our children's growth.

There is a difference between routines and rituals. This episode highlights how each plays a unique role in fostering a sense of identity, stability, and emotional security within the family. Family rituals and routines are not just mundane daily tasks; they are powerful tools to nurture deep emotional bonds, encourage inclusivity, and ensure open communication, empathy, and understanding among family members. Consistent routines are particularly beneficial for neurodivergent kids, providing the structure needed to manage anxiety and promote emotional regulation and well-being.

  Key Takeaways:
  • Structured Comfort: Routines provide security and predictability, improving overall health, mood, and learning environments, especially for homeschooling families.

  • Emotional Bonding: Family rituals create lasting emotional ties and cherished memories, fostering a deep sense of belonging and love.

  • Life Skills Development: Consistent routines aid in building essential life skills, resilience, and independence, preparing kids for future challenges and successes.
