Meet ana and Ale Higuera and Fer Sandoval Pezoa!
Ale Higuera is a multidisciplinary, visual storyteller working in video, animation, projection and illustration. ana maria higuera is a self-taught digital photographer and video maker. This talented sibling duo was in charge of the videography and archival documentation during the 2022 Rutas Festival.
Fer Sandoval Pezoa is a Latin Queer interdisciplinary artist who bases their work on radical tenderness, community healing and JOY as an act of resistance. They aim to create conversations and encourage self-reflection, as well as collective action. Fer was the 2022 Rutas Festival’s Production Assistant and the Stage Manager for “Aliens, Immigrants and other Evildoers” and “Danzantes del Alba”.

In this episode we dive into the responsibility of the artist, laptop activism, solidarity between Latinx, Undocumented, and Black people, and the urgency to continue creating and sharing new work during these pandemic times, including the latest releases in José’s series of Video Cortaditos and Picante Performance Poems on YouTube.
José Torres-Tama is a writer, poet, journalist, renegade scholar, educator, visual and performance artist based in New Orleans, Louisiana. He explores the effects of mass media on race relations, the underbelly of the “North American Dream” mythology, and the anti-immigrant hysteria currently gripping the United States of Amnesia, “which seduces you to embrace forgetting”.

Victoria Mata is a Toronto-based Canadian-Venezuelan artist who combines an evolving feminism with her passion for expressive arts therapy. Mata’s choreography and her personal dance expression generate a dialogue between performance and embodied cultural memory.
The world premiere production of Victoria Mata’s Cacao | A Venezuelan Lament will be presented in September 2022 with Aluna Theatre and the RUTAS 2022 International Festival, in partnership with TO Live. Cacao | A Venezuelan Lament is a new live dance theatre outdoor performance work taking us on an intimate journey into the radiance and resilience of Venezuela’s cacao farming communities.
We chat with Victoria about how art can bring healing, how she collaborates across borders, and she shares with us some things she’s learned over Cacao’s 10 year development.

In this episode we chat with our dear friend, mother, human, playwright, and neurologist Suvendrini Lena!
Suvendrini works as a neurologist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the Women’s College Hospital. She has been an artist-in-residence at several artistic and medical organizations, including the Theatre Centre and the University of Toronto. She is also the writer of Rubble, a theatre project inspired by the poetry of Palestinian writers Lena Khalaf Tuffaha and Mahmoud Darwish and currently in development at Aluna Theatre and Theatre Passe Muraille.
We chat with Suvendrini about how her role as doctor influences her as a playwright and vice versa, and about what solidarity looks like in her work.

We chat with Paulie about everything Lorca - about his private and public life, about his inspirations and major works, and the impact he’s left on drama lovers everywhere.

Soheil Parsa is the co-founder and former artistic director of Modern Times Stage Company, with a career that spans thirty two years and 2 continents. His work has been recognized with numerous awards celebrating his unique contributions to Canadian theatre, including the Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award, the Canadian Association for Theatre Research Honorary Member Award, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He is also the director of Aluna Theatre and Modern Times’ upcoming production of The House of Bernarda Alba.

Esta semana Mónica y Camila conversan con Santiago Guzmán, un actor, escritor y productor nacido en México, basado en St. John’s, Newfoundland. Santiago comparte con nosotrxs historias de su mudanza de México a las provincias Marítimas, como es estudiar y trabajar en las artes como una persona de color, y como fue que comenzo su propia compañía productora, TODOS Productions.

En este episodio, platicamos con la artista, bailarina, coreógrafa, entrenadora de movimiento, activista y parte de la familia Aluna, ¡Victoria Mata!
Victoria Mata es una artista Canadiense-Venezolana con sede en Toronto que combina un feminismo en evolución con su pasión por la terapia de las artes expresivas. La coreografía de Mata y su personal expresión de danza generan un diálogo entre el performance y la memoria cultural encarnada.
El estreno mundial de la proxima produccion de Victoria Mata, Cacao | Un Lamento Venezolano se presentará en Septiembre del 2022 como parte del Festival Internacional RUTAS 2022 presentado con Aluna Teatro en asociación con TO Live. Cacao | Un Lamento Venezolano es una nueva obra de teatro de danza en vivo presentada al aire libre, que nos lleva a un viaje íntimo hacia el resplandor y la resiliencia de las comunidades productoras de cacao de Venezuela.
Platicamos con Victoria sobre cómo el arte puede traer sanación, cómo ha sido la colaboración a través de las fronteras y Mata nos comparte algunas cosas que ha aprendido durante los 10 años de desarrollo de Cacao.

Suvendrini trabaja como neuróloga en el Centro de Adicciones y Salud Mental y en el Hospital Universitario de la Mujer. Ha sido artista residente en varias organizaciones artísticas y médicas, incluido el Theatre Centre y la Universidad de Toronto. Suvendrini es la escritora de Rubble, un proyecto de teatro inspirado en la poesía de los escritores palestinos Lena Khalaf Tuffaha y Mahmoud Darwish y actualmente este pieza esta siendo desarrollada con la compañía Aluna Teatro!
Paulie McDermid ha sido miembro de la mesa directiva de Aluna desde 2014. Tal Vez lo reconozcas por su alter ego drag, Philomena Flynn-Flawn. ¡Maestro de escuela de día, artista de cabaret de noche! Paulie es también autor de Amor, deseo e identidad en el teatro de Federico García Lorca.
Charlamos con Paulie sobre todo Lorca: sobre su vida privada y pública, sobre sus inspiraciones y obras principales, y el impacto que ha dejado en los amantes del teatro en todas partes.

¡Bienvenides a la Séptima Temporada de Radio Aluna Teatro! Comenzamos la temporada con una maravillosa “nerdy” conversación con el director, actor, escritor, dramaturgo y querido amigo de la compañía, Soheil Parsa.
Soheil Parsa es el cofundador y ex director artístico de Modern Times Stage Company, con una carrera que abarca treinta y dos años y dos continentes. Su trabajo ha sido reconocido con numerosos premios, como el Premio Barbara Hamilton Memorial, el Premio Miembro Honorario de la Asociación Canadiense de Investigación Teatral y la Medalla del Jubileo de Diamante de la Reina Isabel II, que celebran sus contribuciones únicas al Teatro canadiense. Soheil es el Director de la próxima producción de Modern Times y Aluna Theatre, “The House of Bernarda Alba.”
En este episodio, conversamos con Soheil sobre algunas de las preguntas que han alimentado su trabajo a lo largo de los años, sus filosofías sobre la dirección teatral y como el trabajo de Lorca lo está inspirando.
