About the Artist: Amanda Addleman is a New York City-based, San Francisco-raised vocalist, pianist, composer, arranger, and educator. Addleman’s musical approach is one well-steeped in a reverence for the traditions of great jazz musicians of the last century, yet her sound represents an informed departure from the tropes and fixations of earlier generations of improvisational musicians. In fusing the spirit of contemporary folk, rock, and pop composition and performance stylings, Addleman’s style blossoms with a freedom from genre restraint, while maintaining a consistent and cohesive sound that still maintains an obvious reverence for those who came before. Addleman recently completed a M.M. from Manhattan School of Music where she studied under Theo Bleckmann, Jeremy Manasia, Phil Markowitz, Jamie Baum, and Ingrid Jensen to name a few. She previously earned her B.M. at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, followed by continued studies with renowned jazz vocalist and educator Tierney Sutton, and San Francisco somatic voicework instructor, Loryn Barbeau. In her own educational work, Addleman maintains a full private studio roster in voice, piano, music theory, jazz improvisation, composition, performance and more. She has also taught in Bay Area schools as a music director; building programs, and supporting all students since 2009. She also worked as guest clinician throughout the state of California and taught classes to college-age and adult students at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, California. It is her mission to both share her perspective on the music through performance and to educate and expose musicians of all levels and backgrounds to the tradition, so that the art form may continue to evolve and thrive.

B3B4 - Live from Mr. Tipples12 Jul 202402:26:36
B3B4 is a long-awaited musical conversation between four Bay Area jazz veterans, combining the soulful growl of the Hammond B3 organ, the resonant bite of the tenor saxophone, the bluesy fluidity of the electric guitar and the propulsive groove of the drums. Their performances range from mid-tempo blues to warm, intricate ballads to driving up-tempo barnburners, and they reveal the fluency and experience of the group’s members in a wide range of genres. The quartet is heavily steeped in blues and bop, drawing upon the classic organ combos led by legends such as Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Larry Young, and Jimmy McGriff. The group is also building an extensive repertoire of original compositions.

Alejandro Del Valle is a self-taught master pianist, arranger and composer for bands, orchestras, dance music and music for film.  Born in Cuba, he recently moved to the Bay Area after spending 25 years working inFrance. He has toured over 20 countries, including Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Russia, Greece, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, Brazil, Canada and Cuba. Alejandro is also an educator and conducted master classes at the Salon de Provence and the Poitiers Conservatory. In 2004, he was the Music Director of “Les Orientales”, arranging and directing a 2-hour performance of Arabo-Andalusian Music by an orchestra at the National Theater of Algiers, the Francofolies de la Rochelle, at the Theatre Mogador in Paris and the “Fiesta du Sud” in Marcelle.

His latest project “Picking Up the Pieces” is a retrospective on his work, a musical conversation between his past and present as he navigates the uncertainty of a new life in the US. “Throughout my life as an artist, I have had numerous sources of inspiration. I usually start from the rhythms of Cuban and Afro-Cuban music but use them in a fusion environment rather than traditional music. Living in South of France, I had musical contact with the gypsy music that reigns in Spain, from which I have borrowed many traditional chords to compose pieces like“Vicente’s Song”. There, I also had contact with North African music from Algeria, which inspired me to start working with the 6/8 rhythm as captured in my piece “On the roof.” In particular, I mix all my past and present work to make up the different compositions. A series of compositions called “Elements” were inspired by the way percussionists feel music. In recent years I have incorporated elements of Rag Time to interpret the contemporary Cuban music, written at the beginning of the 20th century. This work in turn inspired me to compose “Contradanzas” with a perfume from the past. In general, I weave cinematic images and scenes throughout my music. I have always felt that my music pieces are like films without images, something like Mendelssohn’s “Songs Without Words”.

A music creator rethinking the concept of Puerto Rican music, Pedro crosses over invisible frontiers with an (extra)ordinary approach to music. He aims at fusing the earthy quality of folk music with forward looking compositions and live performances, reflecting the mixed identities of his heritage and influences. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Pedro José Pastrana grew up in the jíbaro music tradition and surrounded by the vocabulary of other popular sounds. This upbringing would help him develop a keen instinct for playing in settings outside of his element. In 2009 he got a scholarship at Purdue University to study Science. This experience opened the door to meet other cultures, listen to different types of music and understand them from the perspective of a Puerto Rican cuatro player. He has played the instrument on a variety of musical contexts; from traditional jíbaro, Afro-Cuban music, frequenting bluegrass and jazz jam sessions, touring the southern regions of México, all the way to being an active member of the Bay Area music scene, and playing/recording with the John Santos Sextet, Jerry Medina, Juango Gutierrez, Orestes Vilató, Atabal, Gary Nuñez, Andy Montañez, among others. His debut album, Crónicas de la Pierna Inquieta consists of eight original tracks, serving as snapshots of self-discovery, inspired by the coming of age events of the past 13 years. This work combines incisive, Cuatro generated groove based songwriting with the sounds of Puerto Rico as the color palette.

A Special Christmas Eve remote broadcast Racketeer Radio KFQX style

In Mr Rudin's own words: When I was much younger, I, like many pianists, would get some lucrative gigs during the holidays, playing the seasonal favorites in the background of parties and events. And I used to think, “wouldn't it be great to play this stuff in a concert setting, for actual listeners?"

Clearly, in terms of heritage and beliefs, my connections to the holiday are slim. But as a sentient being in the USA, I am fully acculturated, and as a musician, I couldn't help noticing that, if I chose carefully, and stayed far away from Rudolph and Frosty...hey, a lot of this music is really good - and not just good, but flexibly available to a lot of interpretations. And after all, it is an important part of our ever-diminishing shared culture.

So, in spite of the somewhat flippant headline, this will be an entirely respectful, and musically sincere, evening. So if you can't be with your family tonight, or if your own heritage and belief systems have you heading out for Chinese food - please stop by and and indulge in our shared musical tradition. And no!, the night will NOT include an obligatory chorus of "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel."

Keith Lamar 'Freedom First' - Live From Death Row12 Oct 202301:22:30

In 1989, Keith LaMar was sent to prison at age 19 for murder. He had been living in Cleveland, Ohio, where he sold drugs as a means of survival in the Crack-infested streets he knew as home. On a day that would forever change his life, Keith was robbed at gunpoint and exchanged gunfire with his robbers. He was shot twice in his legs and hit one of the other men in the chest. That young man, one a childhood friend, died. Keith pled guilty and was sent to prison for 18 years-to-life.

Four years later, Keith was attempting to put together the broken pieces of his life at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, hoping for another chance at life. It was an Easter Sunday, and the weather had just turned warmer; Keith and about 400 other men were outside exercising in the rec-yard when commotion broke out inside and it became clear that some type of protest was underway. Keith made a quick decision to slip inside for a few minutes to secure his personal belongings (since his cell assignment was in the area being taken over). Once back out in the yard, he and the others waited to see what would transpire, watching as the bodies of several men were dumped onto the yard.

As Easter came to an end, the Ohio State Highway Patrol rounded up those on the yard and secured them into another part of the facility. Prison records prove that Keith was among them. Though no one could have predicted what exactly was happening, or how it would all result, an 11-day siege ensued. In the end, nine inmates and one guard ultimately lost their lives. When the dust began to settle, the State of Ohio needed someone on whom to pin several of the early inmate deaths. This is where Keith’s troubles began…

A few months later, several prisoners were enticed with the promise of early paroles and/or dropped charges if only they would come up with a reasonable story to help the State sweep up the “mess” at their out-of-control prison. They determined Keith would be the fall guy, and they pointed their fingers at him. Thus, to make it all come together convincingly, the prosecution withheld actual confessions from his defense, as well as eyewitness statements that contradicted their fabricated version of events. In spite of zero DNA or forensic evidence, they moved forward with their accusations against Keith. In fact, they made sure his trial would be racially biased in their favor by calling for the removal of the few potential black jurors, and by holding his trial in an all-white county in southern Ohio. In spite of having no motive to kill anyone, no actual proof connecting him, nor any affiliation with any of the groups organizing the uprising, the jury didn’t take long to find Keith LaMar guilty of the murder of five of the inmates. He was sentenced to death.ore info on his case, evidence and updates can be found at keithlamar.org.

Albert Marquès is a pianist, composer, and political activist from a working class, industrial town outside of Barcelona, where he worked in factories through school. A member of a Catalan anti-capitalist organization as a teenager, he narrowly escaped being detained for his activism.

Influenced by the local punk scene, as well as jazz recordings of musicians like Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau, Michel Camilo and Herbie Hancock, he was self-taught until he attended Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu. After graduation, he made two pivotal trips which changed his life, spending a month in the West Bank in Palestine and a month in Cuba.

During his four years in Barcelona, he played with the best musicians of the scene, such as Marc Miralta, thanks to his unique, non-academic sound. Upon graduating, he moved to Paris, where he worked in a McDonald’s until he learned French. In Paris, he played with musicians such as Remi Vignolo and Pierre Perchaud, and became the pianist in African American drummer Leon Parker’s quartet.

At 25, Albert moved to New York City, without knowing even one person, to play jazz. After a year and a half working as a waiter and going to jam sessions every night, he met his mentor Arturo O'Farrill, who gave him his own baby grand piano. In addition to his musical influence and encouragement, O’Farrill hired him to teach with his organization, the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, a non-profit that gives free Latin jazz music lessons in the most disadvantaged New York City public schools. Albert also plays and collaborates with his sons, Adam and Zack O’Farrill.

Jonathan Stout Orchestra featuring Hilary Alexander is the nation’s premier swing dance big band. The 14-piece JSO captures the unmatched excitement and true rhythmic pulse of the Swing-era, and is the most danceable big band anywhere. The band follows the templates of Benny Goodman and Count Basie – orchestras that were aggressive and tight, and filled with all-star soloists that bring the fire on every song, regardless of tempo. The Orchestra was founded in 2003 after promoters demanded a full big band that was as danceable and exciting as the Campus Five. Jonathan and Hilary responded with a big band that was designed from the outset to be the ultimate swing dance orchestra, and has gone on to become the gold-standard in the swing dance world.

Mint Julep Jazz Band with their little big band lineup of 4 horns, rhythm section, and vocalist, the Mint Julep Jazz Band recreates the hot jazz sounds of the 1920′s, 1930′s, and early 1940’s through arrangements based on original recordings from the jazz age and swing era and original tunes inspired by that time period. The Mint Julep Jazz Band is based out of Durham, North Carolina and is led by trombonist Lucian Cobb and vocalist/swing DJ Laura Windley, who have put their collective knowledge and love of swing music together to create an ideal dance band for swing dancers. Conceived in the fall of 2011, the Mint Julep Jazz Band formed to fulfill the musical needs of a thriving local swing dance community in the Triangle area of North Carolina, drawing its musicians from the educators and former students of North Carolina universities with vibrant jazz programs.

In 2012, after being “discovered” at a wedding, the band recorded an original song for Sesame Street, which aired on April 18, 2013 in an episode featuring Jon Hamm of Mad Men fame. In 2016, the band performed at Lincoln Center as part of their Midsummer Night Swing concert series. The Mint Julep Jazz Band continues to tour and perform for swing dancers, traveling to Lindy Hop and Balboa events from Los Angeles to Austin to New York and beyond.

About Racketeer LIVE Remotes from Mr. Tipple's: Popular radio during the 1930s and 1940s included live coast-to-coast radio transmissions of “big bands”, or dance bands. These live radio remotes were held mostly in hotels, ballrooms, restaurants and clubs. During the war years, it was expanded to include military bases and defense plants. Racketeer Radio KFQX continues this tradition of Radio Remotes bringing you live music from Mr. Tipple's jazz club in San Francisco, CA.
