There are countless ways you could die today. A blood vessel could rupture in your brain. A distracted driver could cross the center line. Your heart could simply stop. From somewhere above us, high-energy particles pass through our bodies every second, and on exceedingly rare occasions microscopic events can begin chains of consequences large enough to kill. We tend not to think about this because, from our perspective, only one thing actually happens. You either make it home tonight or you don't. But what if that isn't true? What if every physically possible outcome actually occurs somewhere? There is a universe where the driver misses you, another where he doesn't, another where you never got into the car at all. And if all of those realities exist, there is a disturbing question hiding inside the idea: what happens from your point of view? You can experience surviving. You can experience waking up after the accident, hearing the doctor say the treatment worked, discovering that the bullet missed. But you can never experience being dead. That asymmetry between survival and death is what we need to focus on here. If consciousness can only ever find itself on branches where it continues, then survival is not really luck, it’s actually a forced migration through possibility. Humanity has always imagined the road to the stars from the perspective of the people who will eventually travel it. We imagine stepping through some impossible doorway and emerging beneath an alien sun. We imagine the distance between worlds finally defeated, entire galaxies transformed into neighborhoods, and the cold emptiness of space reduced to a minor inconvenience. But roads do not build themselves. Someone has to cross the distance first. Someone has to enter the darkness before there is a doorway through it. “Lena” is a short story by Qntm, the same author behind There Is No Antimemetics Division, a book I covered before and called one of the scariest stories I had read in years. That story is about a hidden thing beneath the world, something so dangerous that even knowing about it becomes part of the problem. I actually had the opportunity to speak with Qntm recently, and we discussed several aspects of that book in a conversation that will be released soon. But “Lena” is terrifying in a very different way. Lena is written like a future encyclopedia article about MMAcevedo, the first executable image of a human brain in the year 2031. The scan is more complex than a simple recording of his brain. It is detailed enough to be run as software. Earlier scans of human brains had existed, but they were unstable or incomplete. The human race has existed for roughly 100,000 years, a blip when compared to the long history of the cosmos. In all that time billions upon billions of years, what other life came into existence? Sure the first intelligent race didn’t just form 100,000 years ago, can’t possibly be the first. If so, who was, and heights did their civilization rise to and where are they now? The Xeelee Sequence by Stephen Baxter is a collection of science fiction books and short stories that follow the history of the cosmos dominated by an elusive race of beings known as the Xeelee. They are an ancient race so advanced that mere scraps of their technology left behind discarded by them could change the trajectory of an entire species. For an in depth look at the Xeelee check out my “Ultimate Time of The Xeelee Sequence” video. Unbeknownst to humanity, who only saw the Xeelee as a threat and a competitor, the Xeelee had a great mission. Humanity waged a war with the Xeelee that lasted a hundred thousand years but in reality humankind would prove to be no match for the great Xeelee, in reality the Xeelee fought a much greater war. A war for the fate of the universe against entities made of dark matter. These entities form at the beginning of the universe, they lived within stars and consumed them, if these entities won against the Xeelee, the fate of the universe would be darkness. But the Xeelee had a plan, a plan spanning across time, forward and backwards. The AntiXeele was a constructed entity, a being created with the purpose of orchestrating the Xeelee’s great works and seeing it through. I recently read Stanisław Lem’s short story Non-Serviam, and what’s interesting about it is that it doesn’t actually argue about whether God exists. It asks something much more uncomfortable. What if God is real, reachable, and perfectly capable of explaining himself, and simply chooses not to. This particular short story can be found in his collection of short stories titled A Perfect Vacuum. Which consisted of reviews of nonexistent books. Non Serviam appears towards the end. Lem presents the story as a dry, fictional academic review of a book on personetics by a man named Professor James Dobb. Personetics, the science of creating sentient beings called personoids within machines. Stanisław Lem himself was not religious and he was openly skeptical of the idea that morality requires a transcendent authority. That position is not hidden or ambiguous in this short story. Lem approaches God as a logical proposition under uncertainty, not as a being owed obedience, love, or gratitude, and he carries that stance straight into the story. Poul Anderson’s Tau Zero is one of the most influential works of hard science fiction ever. It was published in 1970 and was based on his earlier short story “To Outlive Eternity,” it’s a novel that takes real physics—especially relativity—and runs with it to the extreme. Anderson leans hard into scientific accuracy, making the book a standout example of how speculative fiction can stay grounded in actual science. It was written in the 1970s, so not all of the science holds up, believe it or not, our understanding of the universe has changed a lot in the last 55 years but that doesn’t take away from how ambitious and influential the book still is. The plot of Tau Zero follows the journey of the starship Leonora Christine, a colonization vessel tasked with reaching the nearby star Beta Virginis. Crew members, consisting of 25 men and 25 women, are aboard the ship, which is powered by a Bussard ramjet. The crew's journey is subject to the effects of relativity, specifically time dilation. The original mission plan involves decelerating at the same rate during the second half of the journey. However, disaster strikes when the ship passes through a nebula, damaging the deceleration field generators. The Xeelee Sequence is a science fiction series by Stephen Baxter that explores the far future, advanced alien civilizations, and the ultimate fate of the universe. It is known for its hard sci-fi elements, vast cosmic scale, and deep exploration of physics. The Xeelee, a nearly godlike alien race, are the most advanced beings in the series, engaging in a war that spans billions of years and multiple universes. That being said, the first book in the series, “Raft” has nothing to do with the Xeelee. The Raft, first released in 1991, opens up in a harsh, industrial world where humanity struggles to survive in a universe with extreme gravity. The story begins in The Belt, a decaying mining settlement orbiting a dead star, where workers live in brutal conditions. This dead star is inside of a nebula that contains air that is breathable by humans. The Raft was home to a more privileged and knowledgeable group, including scientists and leaders like Captain Mith, who tried to maintain control as resources dwindled. Life in The Raft was far different from The Belt, while the miners of The Belt toiled under crushing gravity, barely surviving in their rusted, decaying cabins, the inhabitants of the raft lived relatively easier lives. H.P. Lovecraft needs no introduction; he was a master in the horror genre, and I’ve covered several of his works on this channel. If you check the description, you’ll find a playlist of videos where we explore his work. Lovecraft is arguably one of the most influential authors of all time and certainly the most influential horror author to come out of the 20th century. Some of his well-known works, like The Call of Cthulhu, At the Mountains of Madness, The Dunwich Horror, and The Color from Outer Space, are burned into our collective consciousness and have influenced the horror genre in ways that many don’t realize. In this video, however, we’re going to focus on a lesser-known Lovecraft story, The Horror at Red Hook, and its modern reinterpretation, The Ballad of Black Tom. I should start this by saying that, in my opinion, The Ballad of Black Tom is one of the best modern takes on a Lovecraft story that I have ever read. It adds complexity to the story and its characters, and adds nuance to the horrors that they face in this tale.
