| Can Black Folks Be Culture Vultures Too? (Guest: BLACK, GAY, stuck at home) | 17 Sep 2022 | 01:31:40 | |
It’s interesting times that we’re living in. Hip-hop legend Cakes Da Killa made a tweet that we felt like we needed to explore a bit more - “Imagine doing something that wasn’t considered cool for years to then have it become cool years later and people tell you NOW you have to play by the rules set by people who didn’t even pioneer the s**t in the first place.” For this show we are exploring history and asking the question “can Black folks be culture vultures too?” Joining us to thread this delicate needle are two of our favorite music heads, Joshua Henry Jenkins and Michael Ward of Black, Gay, stuck at home. | The Independent Artist's Journey (Guest: DJ Saint Smith) | 19 Aug 2022 | 01:14:28
Traveling the independent artist road in music can be challenging, but also rewarding. There are artists on the scene who’ve found ways to explore their talents in many ways, and one of them is DJ Saint Smith. An accomplished singer/songwriter, Smith is creating his own sound, “Church&B.” We are going to explore his career, inspirations, his upcoming Gospel day party “Water to Wine” and his debut album “Yours, Saintly.” Watch this full episode on our website: https://to.qpnt.net/show-65 Saint Smith Bio: The “new classic” is being redefined thanks to R&B crooner, Saint Smith. Hailing from Baltimore, MD, the 27-year-old singer-songwriter is blending today’s R&B with 90’s soul music. Inspired by artists from D’Angelo to B. Slade (fka Tonex), SMITH has created his own unique sound, donning it “Church&B”. Already performing with, and impressing the likes of Faith Evans, Tweet and Kim Burrell, to name a few, SMITH is proving to become one of R&B’s most promising new acts. Growing up in a dual pastoral household, SMITH was introduced to music, particularly Gospel, at an early age. Inspirational recording acts such as The Clark Sisters, The Winans and Shirley Caesar were the soundtrack to SMITH’s budding artistry. When left unattended, SMITH would secretly listen to secular artists such as Prince, D’Angelo, Faith Evans and Maxwell for hours. “They’ve really helped shape the way I think musically,” says SMITH. “I grew up in church. Both of my parents are pastors, so I definitely have a heavy Gospel influence in my music and concepts.” Now residing in Atlanta, GA, Saint Smith has taken up a new musical craft, DJ'ing, and has been performing all over the city. He loves combining his Gospel background with his love for 90s and 200s R&B. His debut album will be released in Q4 2022. | Bountiful Freedom: A Show About Kelis | 07 Aug 2022 | 01:10:06
Letting Kelis tell her own story is always the best idea. Just like her musical persona suggests, she tells it like it is. The Harlem-native captivated us when her bright, curly hair and loud screaming appeared on BET in her debut video “Caught Out There,” and our adulation never stopped. Truthfully, we’d discussed doing an official Kelis show many times, and it sounds like now is the time. Join DJ Sir Daniel and Jay Ray as they recount the career of the maverick culture shifter. There are Black Country music fans. Joining us is one of them, and he's on a quest to uplift Black Country musicians. | The Queer MC in the Tiktok Era (Guest: Medino Green) #Pride2022 | 10 Jun 2022 | 01:06:07
Is it inspiration, or is it imitation that’s created your newest favorite song? The growth of TikTok began in 2017, and became the latest juggernaut used by the music industry to determine what is a hit, or even create them. Artists are having to choose between being original or being viral, and it’s impacting how they create and how we listen. We’re going to talk about Black music in the Tiktok era. Joining us for this show is Queens-bred MC, Medino Green, as we continue to celebrate #Pride2022. Green’s new single “CLAP” is out now! Medino Green Bio: Medino Green, the hip-hop artist from Queens, NY, hit the scene back in 2009. Small in stature but big in his lyrical ability, he is one of a kind, standing at a mere 5’6”. A true product of the 90’s, with his flashy braggadocio, in your face style, Green is inspired by artists such as The Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J, Fabolous, Lil’ Kim, and NAS. He’s remained true to the classic sounds of the era that has inspired him. With his latest mixtape, "inMyBag," Green reminds us why he is unique. The mixtape includes 10 freestyle tracks over familiar beats, including tracks like “Medino Say’s” to “GRN Bomb,” his New York cadence reminds us of where he’s from no matter where he’s at. In addition to the Mixtape, Green also put together a few videos inspired by Rap City’s Big Tigger in the Basement, also another classic moment for hip-hop culture while supporting his fellow queer artist peers by hanging their photos on the wall beside him. These days Green is gearing up for his debut album Mackadocious dropping later this year. The first single out the gate is “CLAP” which is available to stream on all music platforms. | Yo-Yo's "Black Pearl" Turns 30 & Remembering "I Was Born This Way" For #Pride2022! | 02 Jun 2022 | 00:58:36
In 1992, about Yo-Yo’s sophomore record, Joan Morgan wrote in Spin Magazine “One year later, her outrage continues to provide a voice for those who lack a means of expression, especially when life explodes in their faces and outside their doors.” Because of how much hip-hop has changed, and how quickly, the album “Black Pearl” has been largely lost to history. That’s where Queue Points comes in. We are reminiscing about a Black hip-hop feminist classic, “Black Pearl.” Also, it’s Pride month, and we are going to be discussing the seminal classic “I Was Born This Way,” the first song to feature lyrics about being an out and proud gay man. Performed, in its original form, by Charles Valentino and made again by Carl Bean, the song has a long and interesting history worth revisiting. | COVERED: Remakes of classic songs that made us take notice | 21 May 2022 | 00:56:24
Oftentimes, covers of songs don’t get the same respect as the original. Sometimes the performing artist phones it in, or the style of the cover just doesn’t work. DJ Sir Daniel interviewed Professor Scales about the legacy of Fela Kuti, his own musical output, and the influence of our African heritage on Black music as a whole. Learn more about Mausiki Scales at https://www.mausikiscalescommonground.com/. Fela Kuti and his music were both larger than life. It’s been unfair to reduce Fela’s legacy to Nigeria’s version of James Brown. While he and Brown had similarities, Kuti’s legacy stands on its own as one of the greatest and consistent musicians and showmen we’ve ever seen.
