Nitty Scott Bio

Nitty Scott is an Afro-Latina recording artist, poet, influencer and social justice advocate via NYC. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she later moved to Florida and attended art school as a creative writing major before leaving to Brooklyn, New York at age 17. Scott first popped up on radars when a video of her freestyling over Kanye West’s track “Monster” went viral, which led to an appearance at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher. She then released her debut mixtape The Cassette Chronicles in 2011, followed by The Boombox Diaries, Vol. 1 EP in 2012, and her debut album The Art Of Chill in 2014. 

In 2016, she contributed to the score for the Paramount Pictures film Zoolander 2, became an official SPRITE P.O.U.R. artist and the face of the Miller Lite Kickback Series. She later joined the Salaam Remi-produced collective No Panty with fellow spitters Joell Ortiz and Bodega Bamz to release the project Westside Highway Story. In 2017, Scott released her critically acclaimed love letter to Afro-Latina femme hood — Creature! — along with the accompanying short film “La Diaspora”, which garnished 2 million views on YouTube. Her track “BBYGRL” was also chosen by Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson for their HBO comedy series 2 Dope Queens. In late 2019, she was featured on Gangstarr’s latest album, One Of The Best Yet on “Get Together” featuring Ne-Yo and the late Guru, produced by DJ Premier. 

In addition to her musical work, Nitty lends her voice to activism and various humanitarian campaigns, guest speaking at The Ray of Hope Walk, the Sadie Nash Foundation and panels at Yale and Princeton Universities, as well as performing at The United Nations Peace Day Concert in 2016. Other notable appearances include her live sets on The Chris Gethard Show, The Brooklyn Museum, The Kennedy Center in DC, the 2017 Afro-Latino Festival and the 2018 BBC Proms. Her flair with phonetics, bold identity and refreshing spirit has caught the attention of others in hip-hop, leading to collaborations and performances with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Nas, Action Bronson, Zap Mama and Cardi B. 

Whether she's releasing her music independently, touring internationally or engaged in community outreach, Nitty's work continues to evolve and expand as a promising lyricist, performer and future philanthropist.

A west coast native, Maurice ‘Moetown’ Lee proudly represents the state of California as his hometown. Inspired by the struggle of his underserved, once gang-saturated neighborhood, Lee began DJ’ing as the escape from the street life. Quickly earning himself a name in the evolving music game. 

It was later, during his time with Interscope Records as Southeast Regional Manager, the major label acquired platinum record success from artists including Eminem, Lady Gaga, and billion-dollar success of the ‘Beats by Dre’ collaboration. Moetown was very instrumental in the career development of Grammy winning artist Janet Jackson, 50 Cent, P. Diddy, and Kendrick Lamar among many. Lee is still affiliated with Universal Music Group (a parent company of Interscope) as a music consultant.

Moetown co-produces one of the largest African American owned festivals ONE MUSICFEST, developing partnerships with key sponsors including Miller-Coors, Ford and more. As a key curator for one of the largest music festivals in the U.S., this full day Atlanta event attracts crowds of 50,000+, hosting acts such as Lauryn Hill, Usher and Kendrick Lamar on its highly sought stages.

Dr. Ed Garnes is one of the most dynamic therapists, educators and life consultants in America. A doctoral internship trainee of Cal Berkeley, he holds a PHD (University of Tennessee), M.A. in Counseling (Michigan State University), M.A. in Psychology (University of Tennessee) and B.A. in English Writing with minors in Black Studies; Mass Comm (DePauw University). Dr. Garnes has worked extensively with diverse individuals and groups. He curates interventions keenly aware of the impact race, ethnicity, gender identity, religion, socioeconomic background, and disability status have on values, interests, and skills that directly impact academic, career, and...

Marcus “Marq” McPherson is a case manager and health equity advocate in Jackson, Mississippi. With much of their life spent in or around Jackson, they have embraced the city as a homespace and have a drive to improve health equity outcomes for LGBTQ+ people of color and people with HIV (PWH) in the Jackson Metro area. Marq is currently a graduate student at The City University of New York (CUNY) and looks forward to using the knowledge gained to contribute to improving the quality of life for their community.

J Nolan is an independent Hip-Hop artist, songwriter, and music entrepreneur raised in the Atlanta area. His songs have been featured in NBA 2K22, Kevin Hart’s “Zero F’s Given,” Lizzo’s “Watch Out For The Big Grrrls”, “Little Fires Everywhere” on Hulu, XFINITY’s “Black Experience” Channel, The CW’s “All American,” and many more. He’s also been highlighted by the legendary NYC radio station Hot 97 in their Top Shelf Freestyle series, debuted his 2021 single “Lanta Sht” on Sway in The Morning, in addition to making a guest appearance in Patreon’s “Pursuing Music Without Permission” campaign advertisement.

In 2021, J Nolan self-published a 2 part book series titled The Pen Game Portfolio which are guides helping independent music creators to track their royalties and monetize their music in non-traditional formats such as TV/Film, creating custom songs for small business and content creators, and much more. Moving further into the music education field, J Nolan recently began taking speaking engagements in youth summer camps, festivals, and colleges. His goal is to help build a stronger, more informed economy for independent music creators to thrive in.

Saint Smith Bio:

The “new classic” is being redefined thanks to R&B crooner, Saint Smith. Hailing from Baltimore, MD, the 27-year-old singer-songwriter is blending today’s R&B with 90’s soul music. Inspired by artists from D’Angelo to B. Slade (fka Tonex), SMITH has created his own unique sound, donning it “Church&B”. Already performing with, and impressing the likes of Faith Evans, Tweet and Kim Burrell, to name a few, SMITH is proving to become one of R&B’s most promising new acts.

Growing up in a dual pastoral household, SMITH was introduced to music, particularly Gospel, at an early age. Inspirational recording acts such as The Clark Sisters, The Winans and Shirley Caesar were the soundtrack to SMITH’s budding artistry.  When left unattended, SMITH would secretly listen to secular artists such as Prince, D’Angelo, Faith Evans and Maxwell for hours.

“They’ve really helped shape the way I think musically,” says SMITH.  “I grew up in church.  Both of my parents are pastors, so I definitely have a heavy Gospel influence in my music and concepts.”

Now residing in Atlanta, GA, Saint Smith has taken up a new musical craft, DJ'ing, and has been performing all over the city. He loves combining his Gospel background with his love for 90s and 200s R&B. His debut album will be released in Q4 2022.

There are Black Country music fans. Joining us is one of them, and he's on a quest to uplift Black Country musicians. When we discuss Country music the first visions that come into our heads are typically cowboy hats, horses, a guitar and someone white. That narrative is common, but not a full or true narrative.

Mike “Big Mike” Bryant is a podcast producer who spent some time on air at a Country radio station, and he knows a thing or two. Big Mike is joining us to discuss his story and how he came to fall in love with Country music.

Mike “Big Mike” Bryant Bio:

Mike Bryant, aka Big Mike, is an audiophile, podcast producer and radio guy from Rockville, MD. During broadcasting school, he began recording in a basement with “Two Guys and a Mic,” and his love for podcasting began. His radio career started at iHeart Media in Washington, D.C. He has worked in everything from promotions to an on-air apprenticeship on country radio in a major market. His passion for podcasting has introduced him to people from all walks of life. He loves this medium because he is always looking for a way to help others be creative and share their voices. He currently produces two shows on mental health, “The HomeWork,” and “Treat Yourself Like a Toddler,” hosted by a therapist, an acupuncturist and a life/career coach. Mike and his wife just recently transitioned their lives to Los Angeles a year ago, with their Boxer, Freya Louise, and cat, Odin. Big Mike loves country music, movies, tv, comics, Funko pops and pretty much anything geek.

Is it inspiration, or is it imitation that’s created your newest favorite song? The growth of TikTok began in 2017, and became the latest juggernaut used by the music industry to determine what is a hit, or even create them. Artists are having to choose between being original or being viral, and it’s impacting how they create and how we listen. We’re going to talk about Black music in the Tiktok era. Joining us for this show is Queens-bred MC, Medino Green, as we continue to celebrate #Pride2022. Green’s new single “CLAP” is out now!

Medino Green Bio:

Medino Green, the hip-hop artist from Queens, NY, hit the scene back in 2009. Small in stature but big in his lyrical ability, he is one of a kind, standing at a mere 5’6”. A true product of the 90’s, with his flashy braggadocio, in your face style, Green is inspired by artists such as The Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J, Fabolous, Lil’ Kim, and NAS. He’s remained true to the classic sounds of the era that has inspired him.

With his latest mixtape, "inMyBag," Green reminds us why he is unique. The mixtape includes 10 freestyle tracks over familiar beats, including tracks like “Medino Say’s” to “GRN Bomb,” his New York cadence reminds us of where he’s from no matter where he’s at. In addition to the Mixtape, Green also put together a few videos inspired by Rap City’s Big Tigger in the Basement, also another classic moment for hip-hop culture while supporting his fellow queer artist peers by hanging their photos on the wall beside him.

These days Green is gearing up for his debut album Mackadocious dropping later this year. The first single out the gate is “CLAP” which is available to stream on all music platforms.

DJ LiKWUiD Bio

DJ LiKWUiD, born Faybeo'n LaShanna A Mickens, is a hip hop fusion artivist, DJ, emcee, teaching artist, writer and music curator.  Mickens is an award-winning graduate of the College of Charleston, and earned her MBA from St. John’s University.  She is a Hip Hop Cultural Ambassador to the United States, Voting Member of the Recording Academy and a part of GLAAD’s Black Queer Creative Summit inuagural class.

As an avid lover of the African American diaspora of music, LiKWUiD's style of djing is based around blending beats together as one tapestry of sound.  Her signature "traphrobeats” genre bending style combines house music, hip hop and afrobeats- three of her loves representing her Sea Island Gullah ancestry, Harlem influence and southern upbringing.   She was a resident DJ at Harlem’s Fela Kuti inspired and African owned  Shrine World Music venue and it’s sister speakeasy venue, Silvana for over six years.  

LiKWUiD has performed nationally and internationally for organizations such as Google, Sony Music, Photoville, Summer Stage, Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, Doku.Tech, The Apollo Theater, Meta, Super Fine Art Fest, Time Out Market, Brooklyn Conservancy and more.  She has shared the stage with artists such as Talib Kweli, The Last Poets, Rah Digga, 9th Wonder and the legendary Slick Rick. 

Mickens is the co-founder of Banjee Boombox, a QTBIPOC festival collective that centers the voices of women, non-binary and queer musicians.  She is committed to using her creativity to empower the voice of marginalized groups (especially women and lgbtqai+ communities); while utilizing music, art and social justice based artivism to reflect the times.

Mausiki Scales has been a force in the Atlanta indie music scene for almost two decades as a sought after keyboardist and founder/musical director of the critically acclaimed ensemble, Mausiki Scales & The Common Ground Collective. An honoree of the Governor’s Award for the Arts and Humanities, Mausiki is also a folklorist and historian who translates his knowledge into musical arrangements that leave his audiences moved and moving…literally.

Whether performing as a trio or a full ten member-plus ensemble, Mausiki Scales & the Common Ground Collective are known for taking fans on a fearless exploration of the pulsating rhythms of the African Diaspora, seamlessly connecting the dots between afrobeat, funk, hip hop, soul and New Orleans jazz…in a single performance.

They have also collaborated with artists such as Roy Ayers, Babatunde Olatunji, Stevie Wonder, The Last Poets, Third World, Russell Gunn, and Julie Dexter. Together, Mausiki Scales & the Common Ground Collective have released four albums, the most recent, "Passages: The Water Brought Us", and they were featured on the Roy Ayers Fela-fied afrobeat version of “Everybody Loves the Sunshine.”

In 2017, a new Mausiki Scales project, “Drums and Shadows” was released, featuring the juke joint-invoking single, “No Tables, No Chairs” inspired by his signature the parade and concert on the Atlanta BeltLine. The album was recognized by BBC Radio DJ, Gilles Peterson as one of the 50 Essential Jazz and Beyond Records of 2017. Mausiki released his latest project, “WestWest Africa” in July 2020. The single, “Kaleidoscopic Universe”, has achieved worldwide acclaim and is a featured track on Spotify’s ‘Jazz Funk’ playlist.

Forty years ago four Black men released an album with yellow matching packaging. Bad Brains had been banned in DC at several locations, yet with PMA went on to inspire the world. The eponymous debut of Bad Brains wasn't the first time Black punk rockers grabbed the attention of listeners, but it was a beacon for what was to come.
