Post Wedding Blues27 Sep 201600:34:50

The "post-wedding blues" are something that Dan and Danielle are incredibly passionate about discussing. So many couples and individuals experience these feelings following their wedding and they decided to have an open, honest and transparent conversation about what to expect and how to avoid it.

We want you to know:

We’re not psychiatrists or psychologists. We’re sharing this information just as two wedding pros who care deeply about the well-being of our couples. This advice is not meant as a substitution for seeing a licensed mental health care provider. If you’re struggling with depression or a funk that you just can’t get out of, take the time to talk to a professional and get real help. You’re worth it.

How to: Use Pinterest to Plan Your Wedding15 Mar 201600:23:20

Welcome to episode 008 of Put A Ring On It Podcast with Daniel Moyer and Danielle Pasternak. This episode is an action-packed one focused on using Pinterest to plan your wedding. We talked about having secret vs. public boards (and which is better) plus what it means to have a shared board. We also dove in to talk more about using Pinterest for good vs. evil including what NOT to pin, copying things you see and the truth behind most wedding pins.

We talked about:

Tips for organizing your wedding boards:

Danielle recommends avoiding ONE BIG “Wedding” board and, instead, breaking it down into a few categories based on what you need and what your priorities are for YOUR wedding. Here are some examples:

  • Florals and Decor (bouquets, boutonnieres, centerpieces, arrangements)
  • Attire (yourself, wedding party, kids)
  • Hair and Makeup
  • Food and Drink (cake, signature drinks)
  • Cool Details (signs, photo booth ideas, guest book ideas, bathroom baskets, lego cake topper)
  • Paper (save-the-dates, invitations, menus, ceremony programs, place cards)
  • Vibe/Theme (Harry Potter themed, modern black and gold)
  • Must-reads (Danielle’s personal favorite: A board to save all of the helpful wedding planning articles you find for future reference)
  • Catch-all/Miscellaneous (anything that doesn’t fit in your other boards)

Focusing on Joy with Liz Susong from Catalyst Wedding Co.01 Mar 201600:36:20

Welcome to episode 007 of Put A Ring On It Podcast. Today's episode dives right in with Liz Susong, of Catalyst Wedding Co., a community for wedding disrupters, creators, and critics alike. During our chat, Liz talks about some of her pet-peeves in traditional wedding magazines and blogs, some distractions she sees couples face, styled shoots and more. Also, Danielle tears up a bit in this one.

"The industry and just the simple fact of being the spotlight - the center of attention - can take so much away from you and can create so much stress. You really have to be ready to be present and start cultivating that intentionality and mindfulness ahead of time." - Liz Susong

About Liz:

Liz Susong is the editor-in-chief of Catalyst Wedding Co.

Catalyst is the first-ever print wedding magazine with a feminist consciousness, and they also host a traveling workshop, {un}convention, for progressive vendors who are passionate about working with diverse, down-to-earth, crazy-in-love couples.

A wedding magazine unlike any other, Catalyst Wedding Magazine features diverse couples’ love stories and explores the intersections of community, creativity, and feminist values.

Volume Two: Intentions takes a step back and asks what it means to choose love, weddings, and marriage in this moment in time.

We talked about:

  • Liz saw that many blogs and magazines focused on “straight, white and rich couples” and many couples don’t fit in that box
  • What a wedding is about to Liz
  • Liz’s pet peeves in the wedding industry and the biggest example of sexism in the industry
  • Some big distractions that couples face when planning a wedding
  • The truth behind styled shoots and what you see in traditional blogs and magazines
  • Whether there were mason jars at Liz’s OWN wedding
  • Your wedding should be focused on Joy vs. creating the next best photo on Pinterest
  • Liz shares a unique couple’s wedding story that makes Danielle cry

Reinterpreting Weddings with Kathryn Hamm, publisher of GayWeddings.com16 Feb 201600:50:00

It’s the sixth full episode of Put A Ring On It Podcast. We are BEYOND humbled to have Kathryn Hamm, publisher of GayWeddings.com, talking with us about same-sex weddings and reinterpreting what you see in the blogs and magazines in the wedding world. She helps to break down the core of wedding planning, ways you can personalize your wedding day, and how to be more inclusive of all communities.

“When it comes to ‘capturing love,’ especially when a same-sex couple is the subject, rules were also made to be broken. Reassembled. Reinterpreted. Revised. Repurposed. This is the gift that same-sex couples have introduced into the wedding trends of today.” - The New Art of Capturing Love, by Thea Dodds and Kathryn Hamm

About Kathryn:

Kathryn Hamm is the publisher of GayWeddings.com, which is not only an interactive planning resource but also offers community forums, free planning articles and the most comprehensive wedding vendor directory available to same-sex couples.

Kathryn also writes, speaks and consults on why same-sex weddings are meaningful and WHY MARRIAGE MATTERS. She’s written articles for the Huffington Post and she is considered a valuable resource for media outlets such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN and CNBC.

Kathryn also recently co-authored a book with photographer Thea Dodds titled The New Art of Capturing Love.

We talked about:

  • There are over 120,000 LGBTQ-friendly wedding pros currently listed on GayWeddings.com for couples in planning mode
  • The results of a Spring 2015 survey showed that 96% of pros were ready to work with same-sex couples
  • Talk to your pros, whether you’re a same-sex or straight couple, about being more inclusive of ALL couples in their language, contracts, questionnaires, website, ads, etc.
  • Be open with your wedding photographer. If they’re posing you in positions that don’t reflect you, or you find yourself putting YOURSELF in weird poses, say something. Show your authentic relationship how it feels comfortable to you.
  • To many straight couples, the marriage license isn’t much of a big deal or just a “check” off the list. For many same-sex couples, the license is the WHOLE deal.
  • We should all be more inclusive of both partners and not just speak to the stereotypical “Bride”
  • Talk with your partner about your “non-negotiable” and your mission statement for your wedding
  • Mixed-gender wedding parties are a great new “trend” that will last far beyond 2016
  • In 2014, 71% of straight weddings were dividing their wedding parties based on gender. In comparison, 86% of same-sex couples were NOT dividing their wedding parties based on gender
  • Couples are starting to include their pets more in their wedding parties, too – 1-in-10 actually!!!
  • Don’t be afraid to break the “rules” of wedding traditions to fit your style and personalities

Feeding Your Vendors On Your Wedding Day09 Feb 201600:10:59

For our second mini-episode of Put A Ring On It, we’re talking about feeding your vendors. And we’re specifically talking more about the highly controversial article recently seen (and since removed) on Brides.com, called “Which Vendors Do You Have to Feed at Your Wedding?”.  It’s a piece written by wedding planner, Sandy Malone, and it really gives some misleading information. We decided to talk through this article and give our own thoughts on the matter including WHO you should feed on your wedding day, WHY you should feed them and WHEN.

We talked about:

  • We talked about what it means when we say “feeding your vendors”
  • We talked about the three different categories of vendors and which of those categories you should extend the food invite to
  • And we talked about the WHY. Why you should feed the vendors and why it’s different than a traditional 9-5 job.

Day-Of Coordination with Bree Ryback of Capitol Romance01 Feb 201600:46:47

Welcome to the fifth episode of Put A Ring On It Podcast. In today’s episode, Bree Ryback of Capitol Romance talks all about wedding planning, specifically day-of coordination, and why every couple REALLY and TRULY deserves it. There is also a brief interlude that involves some major geeking out on Harry Potter.

About Bree:

Bree Ryback is the editor and founder of the DC wedding blog Capitol Romance. Not only has she achieved Danielle’s lifelong dream of having her house featured on Houzz, but this gal is also one stand-up wedding coordinator. Bree just celebrated her five-year anniversary to her main squeeze, Andy, and they have one pumpkin of a little girl who is just positively adorable.

So we’re talking with Bree today because Danielle is one of her several thousand followers on Twitter and has had the pleasure of getting to know her throughout the years and absolutely LOVES her approach to wedding days. We thought she would bring something extra special and unique and we’re truly honored to have her here!

We talked about:

  • Bree got hitched back in 2010 and started her blog, Capitol Romance, to help rad couples meet equally rad wedding pros, and then evolved into a practical wedding coordinator.
  • Bree identifies more as a “wedding coordinator”, “wedding consultant” or “wedding concierge” vs. a wedding planner. (Which is very similar to Danielle)
  • A venue coordinator’s job is to focus on the needs of the venue, first and foremost. Not all venue coordinators are the same, but most don’t cover all of the items an independent planner/consultant does. They act more as sales managers or catering managers, and some aren’t present on your wedding day. They don’t traditionally oversee any events of the day that do not take place on-site (like getting ready, photos, or even your ceremony).
  • Day-Of Coordinators give couples the support to make the day and/or weekend go smoothly. This includes giving advice, creating and driving a timeline, talking with your pros, and making sure all of your details are covered.
  • Day-Of Coordination starts WAY before the actual wedding day – often weeks or even months in advance.
  • Bree’s favorite part of the day: VOWS!!!
  • Don’t worry about incorporating
  • Bree’s advice for couples: hire professional vendors.
  • Bree had the best wedding day ever, but will never forget the one hiccup that happened…

Breaking the “Rules” – A discussion on a recent wedding planning article on Vogue.com26 Jan 201600:13:58

For our first mini-episode of Put A Ring On It, we’re talking about breaking wedding rules. And we’re specifically talking more about the highly controversial article recently seen on Vogue.com, called “The 10 Wedding Rules To Break”.  It’s a piece written by Molly Guy and while it’s caused quite the stir in the wedding industry, we decided to take a pragmatic approach and break down the article a bit further.

We talked about:

  • A wedding is a luxury, not a necessity. The only pieces you technically “need” to officially tie the knot is a marriage license and someone who can legally marry you. Everything else is a bonus and completely up to you.
  • Want a fun alternative to the awkward garter and bouquet toss? Wrap a $20 bill around your bouquet and have your Band or DJ announce everyone to get on the dance floor and toss it. Watch your guests scramble and have a ball!
  • Make sure you PLAN time for the two of you to spend together on your day. Don’t let it be an afterthought.
  • If you want quality photos, hire a professional photographer. Don’t expect the same result from drunken guests with disposable cameras and uncharged iPhones.
  • You get what you pay for.
  • What you do with that day is up to you as a couple and the most important aspects of your day are also your choice.

Preparing for Bad Weather On Your Wedding Day19 Jan 201601:05:29

It’s episode four of the first season of the Put A Ring On It Podcast and we’re talking about bad weather on your wedding day. This episode features three guests who got married during two MAJOR weather events in 2011… and lived to tell the tale. First up, Amanda talks about her wedding in the middle of Hurricane Irene. In the second half, Kristen and Joe talk about the freak snowstorm that caused their venue to lose total power.

We talked about:

  • Have a Plan B – and make sure you’re “ok” with it as an option
  • Talk with your venue about WHEN you need to make the call as to whether or not you’ll be using your Plan B – most venues need HOURS or even a few days notice to make the adjustment.
  • Hire great pros that you feel comfortable with and that you trust
  • Your guests will take cues from you and your partner: If you freak out, they likely will, too; if you stay calm, they will probably follow suit.

How To: Pick Your Wedding Pros05 Jan 201600:27:17

It’s episode three of the first season of the Put A Ring On It Podcast. This episode is all about picking your wedding pros. Where to find them, how to reach out and how to get a great conversation going.

We talked about:

  • Ask your married friends for referrals and feedback
  • Check with your venue or other wedding pros to see who they recommend
  • Do some searching on Google, as well as wedding-focused search engines like WeddingWire or local wedding sites like LehighValleyWedding.com
  • Pick up a local or national bridal magazine
  • Hit up some of your wedding area’s bridal shows (just remember: not ALL wedding pros showcase at bridal shows, but they’re GREAT for finding your florist and baker, just to name a few)
  • Custom contact forms vs. general inquiry forms
  • If the pro you’re looking at is asking some unique questions to start, it’s for a REASON
  • If you’re filling out a general inquiry form, be sure to include the “must-haves”: Name, Partner’s Name, Email, Phone Number, Wedding Date (if possible), Wedding Location (if possible)
  • For bonus points, you can also include: Best way and time to contact you, Something you liked about their work/website/ad
  • When to call vs. email. vs. stop in (Hint: ALWAYS start with an email unless their website or ad says otherwise)
  • Setting an appointment is KEY!
  • Just how many pros you should reach out to to make an educated decision
  • You want their style to match the theme/style/overall vibe of your wedding and personality
  • It’s important not to try and change the style of the pro to match you
  • Things to check for clues about how good of a fit you might be for one another
  • Look for the “CONNECTION” and for the “warm and fuzzies”
  • Obviously, budget is a factor but learn how to move things around when you need to

It’s Your Party For Everyone Else05 Jan 201600:37:58

It’s the first “official” podcast of Put A Ring On It and in this podcast, we’re talking about why your wedding is “your party for everyone else”. We unpack just what that means and show you five areas that you can really ensure your guests have an amazing time at your wedding.

We talked about:

  • It’s absolutely your wedding, but at the end of the day you only make up 1-2% (or less) of your guest list. The decisions you make should be focused on the 100% of your guest list.
  • When else will all of your friends and family be together under one roof again for a joyful reason?
  • Your wedding should not be about outdoing anyone or doing something because of pressure to do it.
  • Every decision you make during the planning process should be based around this overall theme of creating an amazing experience for your guests.
  • 5 tips to make your wedding day amazing for your guests (and you!)

Wedding Party Trends for 2021 and Beyond01 Jun 202100:32:19

Who you choose to be in your Wedding Party – and who you DON’T choose - is a very big decision for your wedding. In this episode, we share some trends on how couples are tweaking this age-old tradition to better reflect the people that matter most to them. This includes using more inclusive terminology, focusing less on someone’s gender or having “even” sides, and potentially forgoing having a wedding party altogether.

We talked about:

  • Modern and inclusive terminology
  • Traditions of the past
  • Is it ok to have uneven sides?
  • Mixed-gender wedding parties
  • VIPs that are supportive of both partners
  • Opting not to have a wedding party
  • Some tips to keep in mind when deciding who you do (and don’t) want to include
