Bringing Your Own Unique Perspective Into Intuitive Eating with Nicole Mareno18 May 202000:38:47

My guest today is Nicole Mareno, and this was her first ever podcast interview! And she does such a fantastic job. She explains her story, talks about everything she went through in her own recovery, discusses how she uses her special skills as a registered nurse to work in the field of eating disorder recovery, and how she integrates her work as a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor to make a big impact with her clients.

I was really inspired by this episode. Nicole is such a special person. I’m so excited for everyone to get to know her and get inspired by how she brings a unique twist to Intuitive Eating as a registered nurse. So many of us can also bring something a little bit different to Intuitive Eating using our own personalities, our own training, and our own credentials to better serve our ideal client.

  • Nicole’s unique journey to Intuitive Eating
  • Changes Nicole has made to her business since the start of COVID-19

Setting Boundaries that Honor Your Values with Stefani Reinold11 May 202000:47:43

I’m so excited to finally bring you an episode with Stefani Reinold. She is one of my best business friends. We have had many different versions of this conversation privately, and we kept saying, “We should record this!” because we knew that it could be helpful to others as we are all processing our own version of the new normal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stefani brings so much to this conversation -- she has her MD, a background in psychiatry, and is now a therapeutic provider. Many dietitians don't have therapeutic training unless they’re in the eating disorder field and are receiving their own supervision and training. This conversation will be very helpful to so many people as we continue to process our own thoughts, feelings, and emotions around the COVID-19 crisis and try to determine how to best move forward while also taking care of ourselves (that’s number one!), our families, our business and clients, and all of the new responsibilities that many of us now have.

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • Processing our experiences (and an explanation of what “processing” actually means!)
  • Handling outside pressure and feeling guilty for taking a break
  • Setting boundaries that honor our values
  • The importance of supervision for clinicians

Navigating Uncertainty During a Crisis with Fiona Sutherland13 Apr 202001:02:40

Fiona is the first guest that I interviewed post-Coronavirus outbreak. This episode is the perfect way to open up the really difficult conversations that we are going to be having moving forward as the crisis continues and both our clients and ourselves attempt to navigate the uncertainty. The work that we do with our clients is completely different than it was prior to this crisis.

This is an unprecedented time in our world, and we need to continue to have these conversations. None of us have the answers. All we can really do is bond together, build community, go forward in our businesses, and try to do the very best that we can.

This conversation with Fiona helped me tremendously, it felt like a supervision session. Our clients need us now more than ever. We need each other now more than ever. I hope that this episode brings you some peace and some permission to feel all the feelings, and I hope that this episode brings you some joy!

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • What can we do when it feels like the world is crashing down around us?
  • Can we actually still run our businesses right now? + the advice I wish I could have given myself two weeks ago!
  • Best practices for running a virtual practice
  • The importance of having our own self-care practices in place

The Importance of Self-Care for Clinicians with Anna Sweeney30 Mar 202000:44:01

The topic of self-care is more important than ever, and Jennifer welcomes Anna Sweeney to better understand and define what it means, on this inspiring episode of the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast.

Anna shares her journey of discovering Intuitive Eating while working as an eating disorder dietitian, and how she regrets the way she had been previously working with clients, motivating her to learn more and expand her understanding of Health At Every Size®. She tells how she started out in private practice part-time while still working at a clinic, and with her chronic health condition becoming more challenging, her transition to open a solo practice, Whole Life Nutrition, to better accommodate her circumstances.

Together, they shine a light on self-care and how Anna now balances her changing self-care needs with the challenges of clinical work and running a business. She explains how her condition forces her to be more thoughtful of boundaries and limitations, and work in alignment with her values and needs. They also discuss how demonstrating self-care for ourselves as a provider is a good role-model for clients.

“It’s really important for us as well to acknowledge and make space for our own stuff. I don’t think it makes us less effective at our jobs; quite contrary, we learn more about ourselves and are able to provide more quality care because of our life experiences.” – Anna Sweeney

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • How her vulnerability with a disability levels the field and deepens her connection with clients, by being a human first, practitioner second.
  • Her definition of self-care with her changing needs, and how she has to continually re-define what that looks like.
  • Her reflection on the success of her Instagram account, and how she shares her writing skills to talk about things that really matter.

“Self-care makes it possible for us to do this work, particularly from a running a business perspective. Making sure we are tending to ourselves in all the ways makes it possible to show up in the best of ways professionally.” – Anna Sweeney

Creating a Professional Eating Disorders Membership with Sumner Brooks23 Mar 202000:48:11

Sumner Brooks, founder of EDRDPro sits down with Jennifer on this inspiring episode of the Pursuing Private Podcast. You’ll hear Sumner’s journey of embracing Intuitive Eating, how a business idea kept her up all night, and how EDRDPro is uplifting the dietetics industry with training for eating disorders around the world.

Together they begin with Sumner sharing her own journey of disordered eating throughout her youth and school, including as a dietetic intern. She shares the pivotal and life-changing moment of seeing Evelyn Tribole speak at a CE event, which ultimately led her to find her own path of Intuitive Eating.

Specializing as a sports dietitian early in her career, she tells how her personal recovery journey influenced her professional work, and her desire to stay in private practice in order to specialize in eating disorders.

With sudden life changes including a new baby, a divorce, and a move to Portland, OR requiring the closure of her practice in her familiar community, Sumner reflects on starting fresh in a new location with no connections or referrals, making it necessary to take on jobs in the corporate world for several stressful years.

You’ll love hearing how the conception of EDRDpro was born from an idea that kept her up all night; an idea for a solution to affordable and accessible training in the eating disorders community.

“I really think that all dietitians need to have training on eating disorders, simply because of the prevalence of eating disorders.” - Sumner Brooks

With the creative spark ignited to bring ED training online for better accessibility, Jennifer was the first person Sumner called with her new idea and business plan. Launched as a yearly symposium, you’ll hear how EDRDPro has evolved since its inception, with two symposiums in 2020 that are focused on core themes, such as a deeper dive into a 6-session symposium in April on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

I really hope what we’re doing here is something that will feel like more than just an introductory step, and really give people a hearty dose of something useful.” - Sumner Brooks

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • Sumner’s process of trying different things in her business that didn’t work, and why she took a break and stepped back for a year.
  • The creative process of building EDRDPro, why she created a membership branch, how it’s changing for 2020 with deeper training on core themes, and the launch of EDRDpro Ambassadors.
  • Why the constantly changing and complex field of eating disorders requires more access to training, and why the learning never stops.
  • Why hiring experts is necessary to grow a business, and how collaboration within the eating disorder community helps broaden the perspective and interpretation of Intuitive Eating, and the value from sharing, discussion and collaboration.
  • Her passion for helping dietitians with their own healing process and then helping them take it to the next level of helping others, with the goal of reaching more people to minimize the suffering and time.

Diversity in Dietetics with Tamara Melton16 Mar 202000:38:54

Jennifer is thrilled to welcome Tamara Melton to share her game-changing mission of diversifying the dietetics industry, on this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast.

Co-founder of Diversify Dietetics, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the racial and ethnic diversity in the field of nutrition, Tamara shares the story of its launch in April 2018 and why it is so needed.

With an academic background of teaching nutrition at a university in Atlanta, Tamara shines a light on the lack of diversity in the demographic profile of dietitians, and why that is not only a barrier to attracting new students, but also creates a lack of diverse practitioners to help people of color. With full acknowledgment of how the industry is currently not reflective of the diversity of people it serves, Tamara and Jennifer discuss the dire need for more diverse providers to refer to.

“There was no organization out there that is doing what needs to be done to successfully attract, recruit, and retain students, interns and professionals of color.” – Tamara Melton

You’ll hear how, along with co-founder Deanna Belleny, Diversify Dietetics was created to provide a community to attract, encourage, and empower students and young professionals of color who were seeking careers in the field of nutrition and dietetics.

With a mission to break down the boundaries of stereotypical dietitians, its goal is also to better serve people of cultural diversity who might not otherwise seek out care, or seek out practitioners they identify with regardless of their level of training. Tamara speaks to the incredible opportunity for diverse practitioners to fill this gap in the industry.

Addressing the practical concerns of dietetics as a lucrative career choice, Tamara explains why Diversify Dietetics also helps support entrepreneurship with business training, to attract more diverse students to the industry and take the risk of starting a private practice.

Now, as a community and a point of contact for anyone who’s looking for a dietitian of color in any state, Tamara shares her hopes and dedication to continuing the diversification of dietitians.

“We wanted to create an organization that would create an answer to any obstacle that students or professionals of color might come up against as they’re getting through their educational pathway, and trying to anchor themselves in this profession.” – Tamara Melton

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • How Diversify Dietetics is passionate about empowering students and professionals of color to help them become the leaders of the next generation in dietetics.
  • Why micro-aggression and unconscious bias can create a barrier to learning and creativity for students of color in all-white learning environments.
  • The 3-day learning summit in Atlanta and the diversity of speakers and topics (now sold out!)

Collaboration Over Competition with Haley Goodrich09 Mar 202000:49:44

HAES® informed eating disorders dietitian Haley Goodrich joins Jennifer for an informative and heartwarming discussion on this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast.

Co-founder of INSPIRD to SEEK, a community for weight-inclusive healthcare professionals, Haley shares her story of how she evolved to become an advocate and educator of the HAES approach to dietetics. After quickly discovering early in her career that clinical dietetics was not her jam, she reflects on how becoming an entrepreneur was the only way to practice the way she wanted. After opening a private practice which grew quicker than she anticipated, she studied Intuitive Eating as a tool, learned more about how to teach her clients about HAES, and worked toward being an eating disorders dietitian.

Now running a group practice with two other dietitians, Haley discusses the process of hiring, the satisfaction of employing others, and how success in a private practice is not always based on the numbers, but sustained growth by creating relationships with referral sources and practitioners in the area.

“I was tired of living really small, and I’d rather take a risk and live a bigger life than feel really safe inside my comfort zone, and I’ll figure it out.” – Haley Goodrich

Haley also tells how she took on the Eating Disorders Chair position in the Behavioral Health and Nutrition dietetic practice group from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, how it has helped her to communicate strategically, and the importance of HAES being embraced in the academy. She also shares how INSPIRD to SEEK evolved out of her own need for community at a time before any Facebook groups, and being the only HAES practitioner in Pittsburgh, PA.

Together they shine a light on the topic of collaboration instead of competition in the niche of anti-diet practitioners, and how we all bring our own message that is unique to help each other learn and grow.

“I truly think that competition in this space is a way to distract ourself from the real purpose of our work. We don’t need to compete against each other. We’re going against the grain and a $70 billion diet industry; that’s who we need to compete against.” – Haley Goodrich

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • The privilege of being a Dietitian and being able to take the risk of being a business owner.
  • The challenge of finding balance her professional and personal life.
  • The importance of boundaries, how they shift, and managing time on social media.
  • Her passion for supporting dietitians in private practice to shift to a weight-inclusive approach.
  • Her advice to new dietitians.

Building a Business as an Anti-Diet Dietitian with Christy Harrison02 Mar 202001:02:05

Jennifer welcomes Christy Harrison to this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice podcast to share her journey of becoming an Anti-Diet Registered Dietitian and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. As an industry leader, Christy is a passionate anti-diet advocate, educator and published author, and you’ll love hearing her story of how she built a successful business in alignment with her values.

Reflecting on her own eating disorder, Christy shares her winding journey of discovering HAES and Intuitive eating. Working as a journalist in her first career and reporting on health and nutrition at a food magazine, her own recovery fueled her interest to return to school to become a registered dietitian.

Starting her private practice early on with the specialization of disordered eating, she recalls how she ardently pursued continuing education and deepened her learning of Intuitive Eating, and why she started her podcast to get at the heart of people’s relationship with food.

“If we want to prevent eating disorders at a public health level, we have to change the culture so people are not triggered into disordered eating by weight stigma.” – Christy Harrison

You’ll hear Christy’s process of creating her first online course - Intuitive Eating Fundamentals, plus all the steps she took with her first book deal, from pitching proposals to final product, and how working with a publishing company that believes in the Anti-Diet message was key.

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • How her entrepreneurial family, and experience with freelance journalism prepared her for private practice and developed her business acumen and money mindset.
  • Why she chose the direction of reaching more people with courses and writing a book instead of expanding her solo practice into a group practice.
  • How she took her one-on-one client’s experiences and education piece of Intuitive Eating to build the structure of her course, and why working one-on-one for several years first was essential to its success.
  • The power of the community that comes along with the online course and the need for more ongoing community support to help eating disorder recovery.
  • Recognizing the privilege of being a successful entrepreneur and having time for creativity to write a book; the realization of her childhood dream.
  • The ups and downs of having her book out in the world, and how she deals with negative feedback with the anti-diet message.

The Pros and Cons of Taking Insurance with Hannah Turnbull24 Feb 202000:46:15

In this informative episode of the Pursuing Private Practice podcast, Jennifer is joined by Hannah Turnbull to shine a light on the pros and cons of taking insurance in a private practice.

Hannah discusses how her own eating disorder recovery drove her to choose dietetics as a career. After discovering Intuitive Eating while in school, she explains why it took a while to ‘click’, and how her journey of recovery strengthens her relationship with clients.

“Intuitive Eating is the reason I’m still a dietitian today.” – Hannah Turnbull

Always an entrepreneur at heart, she shares how her transition to a private practice began while still working full-time at a hospital, and how her varied work experience prepared her for running a business.

Now one year after transitioning from a solo to a group practice, Hannah tells how she hired her team to be in alignment with her values of a weight-inclusive practice, and how she leads the business and manages her employees.

Together, Jennifer and Hannah then dive into the topic of insurance, how she brought in her value system in her decision to take insurance, and the learning curve involved.

“For me it just made sense, I like to use my insurance when I can, and I want to make that one less barrier for somebody to be able to get care that they deserve.” – Hannah Turnbull

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • Why she started taking insurance to be in alignment of her values to be accessible, inclusive and equal.
  • Her learning process, and how she studied other HAES dietitians who were taking insurance to learn the first steps, and establishing a system.
  • Why her practice is on 3 insurance panels, and instead of an all-or-nothing approach, why it’s okay to pick and choose and start with a few, and why she decided to not contract with some insurance companies.
  • The importance of doing the research for your state, and utilizing the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’s individual state organizations and also local organization reimbursement chairs for localized information.
  • The Pros of taking insurance, how it grew her practice, and provides better and consistent client care with weekly appointments.
  • The Cons of taking insurance, dealing with the upfront work and delay to be accepted and the added expenses.
  • How she handles reimbursement rejections to advocate for the client.
  • The importance of policies and procedures and having clients sign off to understand.
  • Why she created her first course “Nourish Your Knowledge” with colleague McKenzie Caldwell to provide a resource they wish they had earlier to better understand HAES and Intuitive Eating.
  • Her plans for 2020 including speaking engagements and webinars to teach clinicians the steps to start taking insurance, and her role as an advocate to help clients have more access to insurance and support.

Teamwork to Grow a Business with Marci Evans17 Feb 202000:51:49

This episode of the Pursuing Private Practice podcast is not to be missed, as Jennifer sits down with Marci Evans for an incredible conversation that will inspire dietitians at all stages of their career.

As a leader in the field of eating disorders, Marci helps bust the myth of doing it all alone, and why working with teams and community is necessary to build a thriving business and to support her accomplishments in the dietetics industry.

Fortunate to discover Intuitive Eating early in her internship, Marci reflects back on how it shaped her career and her own relationship with food, and influenced her niching down to eating disorders and HAES. Working at a weight-loss centric gym while attending graduate school, she cultivated her entrepreneurial skills and developed her voice and message of weight-inclusive dietetics.

You’ll hear the process of how Marci transitioned from a solo practice to a thriving group practice, and the necessary risks involved. She also shares how after teaching a University program for clinicians working with eating disorders, she bridged the course curriculum to create her online training program, Nutrition Counseling for Eating Disorders, and how she later updated it with a 2.0 version. From there, she developed even more online training programs for dietitians, to meet the demand for specialized training.

Along the way of building a thriving group practice and online training programs, Marci explains the absolute necessity of having a team of people to help get it all done.

“If you’re unable to surrender tasks to another person, you cannot build beyond your own individual practice.” – Marci Evans

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • How her Master’s degree integrated nutrition and entrepreneurship with eating disorders counseling, and provided the foundation.
  • Her process of growing a group practice and the steps of developing her online course.
  • How her community feedback helped her build version 2.0 of the program.
  • The lack of training opportunities in eating disorder counseling, why dietitians need to learn more about it, and her passion for continuing to expand the role of dietitians.
  • The challenges of her unexpected maternity leave and transitioning back to work, and how she now navigates the middle ground without over-extending herself.
  • Her advice for dietitians going into entrepreneurial ventures.

Intuitive Eating for Cancer Treatment with Amber Thomas10 Feb 202000:33:57

Jennifer is delighted to welcome Amber Thomas to this informative episode of the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast. As a Registered Dietitian specializing in Cancer Nutrition, Amber shares her journey and expertise of bridging an Intuitive Eating, weight-inclusive practice with oncology nutrition.

Having specialized in oncology for her entire dietetics career of 16 years, Amber tells how she became concerned with seeing cancer patients that wanted regimented diet protocols, and how they feared food and judged themselves for what they ate. When her friend and fellow dietitian Melissa Preston gave her the Intuitive Eating book, it transformed her approach with guiding her patients to a better relationship with food.

She also shares how Intuitive Eating helps patients heal after treatment from the psychological impact of cancer that can create a dissociation and mistrust of the body, and how the principles guide them to trust and listen to their body again.

This is where I need to be guiding people to a better relationship with food, so they can choose foods that are health-promoting after cancer treatment, and not fear food like I was seeing.” – Amber Thomas

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • Why she transitioned to private practice after working at a cancer center for 10 years, and how she found an online coaching approach to oncology nutrition. She feels it works the best to provide better support for her clients, and that online coaching provides balance with her family.
  • The dynamics of working with the intersection between cancer, Intuitive Eating, and HAES, and how Medical Nutrition Therapy and Intuitive Eating can be integrated together.
  • What dietitians need to know about cancer nutrition research, such as the harm in popular “prevention" food messages with black and white language, and how weight stigma shows up in cancer care.
  • Why some Intuitive Eating principles have a lot of nuance during cancer treatments when tuning into the body is compromised, such as the signals of hunger/fullness and taste, and when flexibility is required.
  • Why she wishes dietitians understood more about the trauma cancer patients experience, and encourages them to improve their counseling skills to better meet the patient where they’re at (financially, emotionally, physically) with more sensitivity to their circumstances.
  • How being consistent with her message and offerings have benefited her private practice, and her plans for 2020 which include starting a podcast to provide education with a different message about cancer nutrition.

Overcoming Impostor Syndrome in Private Practice with Glenys Oyston03 Feb 202000:54:02

There are many pathways to a full-time private practice, and Jennifer’s guest Glenys Oyston shares her journey of an incremental process to realizing her dream. Listen to her inspiring story of discovering Health at Every Size, niching down, and overcoming impostor syndrome on this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice podcast.

Glenys tells us about her experience of being a restrictive dieter in her twenties, and how she chose the Dietetics industry with the career goal of being a weight loss dietitian. Throughout her years of course work, her obsession with food restriction and fear of gaining weight was dominating her life, and upon discovering HAES as a student, reflects on the transformation it had on her perspective, breaking her free from the diet lifestyle.

Incorporating the principles of HAES with her inpatients and primary care work with spinal cord injuries and geriatrics, she met her future podcast partner Aaron Flores, RDN whom she learned about Intuitive Eating. All the while, she worked full-time with the dream of one day having her own private practice.

Glenys tells how she transitioned into a practice incrementally over three years, and dealt with impostor syndrome by pushing through and learning by doing.

“The only way to get through the fear is to go straight through it, and keep working at it until you’ve helped enough people that you start to feel good about it.” – Glenys Oyston

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • How discovering Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating broke her free from restrictive eating issues, and empowered her to be okay with her natural body size.
  • The journey of starting her private practice with an incremental progression over several years; first with a blog in late 2014, ‘Dare to Not Diet’, then a podcast in 2015 with Aaron Flores, to taking her first clients in 2016.
  • How she learned as she went, and has benefited from being one of the first to join the Pursuing Private Practice program
  • How she dealt with fear of failure and impostor syndrome at each stage, and has built confidence by taking action and putting things in perspective to enjoy the ride.
  • Why she has narrowed down her niche of only working in areas she enjoys, and knows when to refer clients to other dietitians, without considering them as competition.
  • The realization of her dream of full-time practice, and by making space for networking, more clients came.

“I’m in competition with the diet industry. I don’t buy the traditional competition model. I’m there to lift up my fellow dietitians.” – Glenys Oyston

Julia discusses her own previous struggle with an eating disorder as an athlete, and dealing with the body image pressures that came with being a dancer and runner.

She shares her story of recovery while studying nutrition and discovering Intuitive Eating during her Dietetic internship, and how she started her own business right away, specializing in eating disorder recovery, inspired from her own experience.

Weight Inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics (WIND) with Heather Caplan20 Jan 202000:51:02

Jennifer welcomes Heather Caplan, founder of WIND, to the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast.

Providing events focused on continuing education and connection for weight-inclusive dietitians, WIND fills a gap in the industry by bringing dietitians together for community, education and connection where weight-inclusive care is the norm.

The story of how WIND was conceived, launched and has evolved is what Heather shares with Jennifer in this episode. Together they discuss her own journey of overcoming an eating disorder, the process of un-learning, and the initial confusion of establishing her role as a dietitian with a weight-inclusive approach.

When she discovered the paradigm of Intuitive Eating, Heather expanded her learning curve and embraced the weight-inclusive niche that led to opening her own private practice. Now three years into her own business, together they discuss how a natural progression happened from working with clients, to also supporting other dietitians, and the reward of giving back to the profession and helping to shift the perspective in the industry.

“If we’re not having these topics represented at the major Dietetic conferences, let’s have our own conference.” – Heather Caplan

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • The ways her private practice has evolved from its origins with her prior clientele as a running coach.
  • How starting a nutrition podcast early on was the key to growing her practice, and why she shifted her message from addressing clients, to other dietitians who were already listening.
  • What sparked the idea to start hosting small conferences to supplement the limited number of HAES-aligned sessions at FNCE.
  • How she tested the concept, gathered support, and successfully hosted a small sold-out test event in February 2019 that Jennifer spoke at.
  • The benefits of in-person smaller events versus hundreds of people, and the lessons she’s learned with limited event planning experience.
  • How WIND is evolving, Heather’s plans for upcoming events in 2020, and how dietitians can get involved.

Mentorship for Dietitians with Anne Elizabeth Cundiff16 Dec 201900:47:51

Anne Elizabeth Cundiff brings her 18 years of dietitian experience to this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice podcast, and shares with Jennifer how her passion has evolved to helping other dietitians on their journey of achieving career success.

Anne recalls how early in her career in 1998, she didn’t have any support while pursuing her education and career choices, and felt alone and isolated with no community or resources at that time. This experience later fueled her passion to provide that missing resource in the complex dietetics industry, leading to the launch of her mentoring business to help dietitians in navigating their career.

She also shares with Jennifer how she first learned about Intuitive Eating from a student while working as a Preceptor, and how she incorporates it into her work with clients and refers out to specialized Intuitive Eating dietitians when needed. About Intuitive Eating, she says…

  • Examples of how her personalized Business Coaching approach of mentoring has helped dietitians:

    • to understand or re-discover their passion and values,
    • to navigate through burnout from high-intensity jobs and transition to other areas of practice.
  • Why it’s normal to switch direction 3 to 4 times in your career and the importance of reaching out for someone to help you navigate those transitions.
  • Examples of how she balances work-life satisfaction and self-care, stays organized and focused, and what she’s learned from her struggle with establishing boundaries.

“My approach is letting someone just talk it out, to help people not give up on something that meant so much to them when they first got into the field.” - Anne Elizabeth Cundiff

Preventing Burnout for Dietitians in Private Practice with Paige Smathers02 Dec 201900:55:02

Jennifer is joined by Paige Smathers, RDN, CD to explore the important topic of burnout for dietitians in private practice, and to share insightful and relevant strategies to prevent it.

Together they explore the definition of burnout, and shine a light on the causes of it from not only the complexities of the dietitian industry and our clients, but also from the anxiety and uncertainty that the online world can cause private practice owners. They reflect on the need to have honest conversations with ourselves and acknowledge how this work can be exhausting with the pressures to manage all aspects of the job.

Paige shares how she recognizes the early signs of depletion that leads to burnout, how she came to accept that discomfort, uncertainty and discouragement are part of this work and being in private practice, and how she developed mindfulness skills to deal with that, rather than just trying to feel better.

Jennifer and Paige discuss how learning to tolerate the distress of this work can actually help dietitians grow in other aspects of life, and be role models for our clients.

How To Improve Your Counseling and Retain More Clients18 Feb 202500:44:17

Welcome to the Pursuing Private Practice podcast!

Join Jennifer McGurk, the CEO of Pursuing Private Practice, and Rachelle Heinemann, Therapist, Eating Disorder Expert, & Confidence Coach to talk about what dietitians need to know about counseling in private practice.

The heart of a successful private practice isn’t just about providing nutrition education—it’s about building strong, supportive therapeutic relationships that truly help clients heal. In this episode, we dive into what makes counseling different from education, why setting boundaries is crucial for both you and your clients, and how to navigate client ambivalence. This episode will give you key takeaways to transform your counseling strategies, create better connections with your clients, and ultimately improve retention in your private practice.

  1. The Therapeutic Relationship: A therapeutic relationship is about creating a safe space where clients feel comfortable exploring their challenges, while the provider maintains professional boundaries and understands personal biases.
  2. Counseling vs. Education: Counseling goes beyond simply providing information, as it requires understanding how clients receive and interpret that information, as well as addressing any resistance they may have.
  3. Counseling Tips for Dietitians: A key tip for dietitians is recognizing that not all clients are fully invested in the counseling process, and acknowledging their ambivalence can help nurture a more effective and supportive relationship.
  4. Boundaries in Counseling: Setting clear and consistent boundaries is essential, not only for preventing burnout in providers but also for creating a structured environment that supports clients' personal growth and accountability.

Timestamps:

  • 03:30 Private Practice Journey: Rachelle shares how her work evolved from one-on-one therapy to podcasting to speaking and becoming a leader in her community.
  • 05:54 Counseling and Business Success: Discussion on how strong counseling skills are essential for building a thriving private practice.
  • 08:30 Counseling vs. Education: Rachelle explains the difference, stressing the need to understand clients' experiences and resistance to make changes.
  • 12:18 Creating a Safe Space: The importance of acknowledging clients' ambivalence and providing a safe environment for expression.
  • 16:13 Naming Client Feelings: Discussion on the importance of naming clients' emotions while avoiding assumptions.
  • 23:45 Importance of Boundaries: The necessity of boundaries for both clinician well-being and client healing.
  • 30:39 Defining Good Work: Discussion on the qualities of good counseling, including attentiveness and being human.
  • 34:16 Tolerating Discomfort: Exploring the importance of helping clients develop resilience in uncomfortable situations.
  • 37:10 Holding Space for Clients: Rachelle reflects on pivotal moments in counseling and the value of holding space rather than fixing problems.
  • 39:10 Advice for Dietitians: Rachelle shares the importance of cross-education, supervision, and therapy for enhancing counseling skills.

Systems to Scale06 Feb 202400:52:52

Welcome to the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast!

Join Jennifer & Courtney Vickery, CEO of Declet Designs, as they discuss the importance of implementing effective systems in business. They share how systems have revolutionized their business operations and leadership roles.

Join the conversation as they discuss:

  1. Rest & Reflection in Business: Many professionals who pursue a career in private practice face burnout at some point. It’s important to take a step back to avoid burnout. Systems are essential for being able to COAST in business to maintain long-term success.

  2. The Evolution of Systems in Pursuing Private Practice: Pursuing Private Practice began with no systems in place. Now, we use project management tools such as Trello and Asana to leverage systems to meet our overarching business goals.

  3. Adjusting for Different Learning Styles: Individuals on your team might have different learning styles. Being able to accommodate various learning styles to ensure effective communication and seamless execution is game-changing.

  4. The Impact of Systems on Business Growth: When you have systems in place that align with your business goals and meet your team’s communication needs, business growth can start to happen.

  5. Leveraging Visual & Auditory Communication: People learn differently, and using different visual and auditory systems can be extremely effective. Some people like things typed out, some learn best from videos, and others just need to hear it out loud.

We hope this encourages you to ask yourself, “How are the systems I have in place allowing me to take up space in business?” and “How can I make them better?” Systems can help you become the business owner you were meant to be.
