The story "Chauthi Koot" is a story of the state of mind of a common man in the years after 84.

Chauthi Koot evokes the atmosphere of suspicion, fear and paranoia of the Punjab in 1980s.

Dr. Waryam Singh Sandhu, born on 10th of September 1945 is a famous Indian author of short stories.In the year 2000, he was awarded with the Sahitya Akademi Award for his famous short story collection known as "Chauthi koot".

The author says that I did not make the 'Punjab crisis' the subject of the stories because I wanted to be in the discussion by doing so. The fear and terror of that time was such that it remained in our minds for almost a decade and a half. There was not a single moment when the mind of any Punjabi was free from the burden of this fear. This was not a floating issue of a few days, but a deep-rooted issue that had settled in our souls and kept us gnawing at each and every moment. Such an issue could not be written with the sole purpose of interest or discussion in mind. Especially in the area of Majha where I lived, even speaking a word against the terrorists was like inviting death. In that area which I called the ‘Fourth Koot’ and which had become a forbidden area for other countrymen. Sitting in that village, where the maximum number of people had fallen victim to bullets during this period and where a person could be taken to the next world on the basis of a small lie or truth, such stories could not be written just to be in the discussion! These were just a humble attempt to remove the weight of the Himalayas weighing on one’s mind by scraping it with the tip of a pen.

College Shimla from 1950 to 55, at Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College Camp, New Delhi in 1955 and also worked as Senior Research Officer Class I, UPSC, New Delhi.

This story "Udeek" by Kirpal Kazak is about a family waiting for a parent's death.

Kirpal Kazak (born 15 January 1943) is a Punjabi writer. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2019 for his short-story collection Antheen. Kazak was born in village Baloke, Sheikhupura district, British Punjab (now Pakistan). His father, Sadhu Singh Ramgarhia, was well versed in Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, and Punjabi.

The family migrated to Fatehpur Majra village, Patiala district, Punjab, India after the partition of India. He worked as a carpenter and a mason as a youngster.

He started his writing career by contributing to Punjabi magazine Nagmani. In 1972, he published his first book Kala Ilm. He was appointed as a folklore assistant at Punjabi University, Patiala where he researched the culture of nomadic tribes from Punjab such as Sikligars and Gadia Lohars.

Gurbachan Singh Bhullar is short story writer of Punjabi language who is widely acclaimed for his contribution to the Literature.

In 2005, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his short story collection Agni-Kalas, which not only inspired new writers but even resonated the very foundations of 'Punjabi writing'.

Born in 1937 in Pitho village in district Bhatinda, Punjab, India. His father, Hazura Singh, was an ex-serviceman, who had a keen interest in literature and had a personal library containing works of Punjabi literature. Bhullar consequently developed a taste for literature during his early childhood.

In the story ‘Toa’, issues like caste, class, and class have been portrayed. Even in the present time, the fanaticism of Manu Smriti persists.

In Dalit families, the daughters and sons are encouraged to follow moral values ​​and they respect others, but they take this honor and respect given to the upper caste people as a result of ‘higher class’.

In many, the pride of caste persists from generation to generation, due to which equality is being eroded. Even educated people become victims of stress due to their inability to fill the deep pit of the caste system. This is the reason why the main character of the story appears as a witness to the tragic fate of the people of the Dalit society.

The story is told through the voice of an old fish speaking to her 12,000 children and grandchildren. She describes the journey of a small black fish who leaves the safety of the local stream to venture into the world.

The path of the little fish leads down a waterfall and along the length of the river to the sea. Along the way, the fish meets several interesting characters, including a helpful lizard and the dreaded pelican.

With both wisdom and courage, the fish travels far and the tale eventually ends with the Little Black Fish setting a lasting example for others.

‘Taboo‘ is about a mother-daughter relationship in a rapidly changing society. The mother is sensitive to her daughter’s live-in relationship with a man.

Gurbachan Singh Bhullar is short story writer of Punjabi language who is widely acclaimed for his contribution to the Literature.

In 2005, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his short story collection Agni-Kalas, which not only inspired new writers but even resonated the very foundations of 'Punjabi writing'.

Raavi Paar is a poignant, telling story of a couple who’s on their way to India on a train that is brimming with people.

The couple also has two little baby boys and loses them both due to chaos and confusion in the train. This is an account just one family during partition while so many others shared the same fate.

Kulwant Singh Virk was born in village Phuleran (District Shekhupura) in March, 1921. Around Phuleran, there were about 125 villages of the Virk community belonging to a single ancestor. That is why Kulwant Singh took a lot of pride in belonging to the 'Virk brotherhood'.

Kulwant Singh Virk did his post-graduation in English literature. He also passed Bachelor of Law. He served in the army and was the liaison officer of the Punjab Government and the Central Govt. He worked at the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and finally retired as the Press Secretary to the Chief Minister of Punjab.

He got Sahitya Akademi award for ‘Naven Lok’ in 1968. He died in 1987 in Canada where he was undergoing treatment following a stroke.
Waryam Sandhu, one of Punjab’s preeminent short story writers, says, “Perhaps, he is the only short story writer who is remembered by writers, critics and readers of Punjabi literature from across time and space as the greatest storyteller.”

Zoya Pirzad is a renowned Iranian-Armenian writer and novelist. Born in Abadan, south of Iran, at 1952, she is an Armenian Iranian novelist very well known for her superb ability at characterizing the women and creating suspense through defamiliarization of everyday life.

She is the author of the international bestseller Things We Left Unsaid, and her most recent collection of stories, The Bitter Taste of Persimmon, won the prize for Best Foreign Book of 2009 in France. She grew up in Abadan, Iran, and now lives in Yerevan, Armenia.

Dr. Gurbaksh Singh Bhandal, born on 2 April 1953 to father Channan Singh and mother Pritam Kaur in village Bhandal Bet in Kapurthala district of Punjab.

He has done MSc in Physics and PhD in Nuclear Science. He has taught Physics in colleges for 33 years. Dr. Bhandal has contributed 22 books to Punjabi Literature. He is also Prof. in Physics at Cleveland State University, Ohio (America).

Sukirat Singh Anand (better known as Sukirat) is a short story writer, journalist and translator. He was born in 1956 in an illustrious literary and political family of the Punjab: his maternal grandfather (nana) being Gurbaksh Singh of Preet Lari and his father Jagjit Singh Anand, a communist leader, and editor of Nawan Zamana. His mother Urmila was a prose writer in her own right. He spent 24 years in Moscow from the early 1970s till late 1990s and witnessed the transformation in Russia. He wrote a book My years in Russia; A Time to Remember and recorded his memoirs.

'The Pink Cake' was selected among the top ten best stories of 2023 by Urmilla Anand Memorial Awards jury. Arvinder Kaur graduated with a BA (Hons. in Punjabi) and has further earned an MA and PHD in Punjabi. She is fluent in Urdu and Persian and is currently an Assistant Professor in Punjabi at the DAV College, Amritsar.

As a teenager she was inspired by Gulshan Nanda’s novels. She began her literary journey by writing Punjabi poems. Arvinder Kaur is a gifted translator and transliterator of Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi books. Her writings include Khasmakhanian, Bullah, Teesri Dastak, Border-Border, Dukh Darya, Jodiyaan Jagg Thodiyaan, and Shahid Nadeem de Natak. She has also produced works of literary criticism in drama.

She has been honoured with the ‘Kalaa Ratan Purskaar 2013’ and the ‘Gurdial Singh Phull Yaadgari Sabha’ and ‘Principal Sujan Singh Yadgari Utshahvardhak Sanman 2020’. In 2021 the Jhanjaran Wale Paer short story collection was conferred the Dalbir Chetan Yadgari Purskar Award. 'Jhanjaran Wale Paer ' also won 'The Dhahan Prize' 2022.

Words such as these ring more true for writers, especially ones like Sahitya Akademi Award 2022 winner Sukhjit. Hailing from Machhiwara, Sukhjit was that rare son of soil whose imagination touched great heights. Though not a prolific writer, whatever he wrote had merit and his short stories were no less than psychoanalysis of the society we are and he was a part of. 'Paatshah' is a beautiful story written by Sukhjit. The protagonist of the story who is an old man gives away all of his land and resources to a religious institution (Dera) which is not acceptable to his family. The only son of the old man is not allowed to meet him when he decides to encounter his father who now lives in Dera. Things take their own turns and the story takes upon the journey where it exhibits various layers of the society we are living in.

A Train To Pakistan Remembering Khushwant Singh Tribute to Khushwant Singh by Gulzar Singh Sandhu Khushwant Singh (2 February 1915 – 20 March 2014) was born in Hadali, Khushab District, Panjab. He was one of the most well-renowned authors in Indian literary history, having received many awards and honors for his literary and journalistic contributions. Along with his prolific writing career, Khushwant Singh also served as a lawyer, diplomat, and politician.

Khushwant Singh was educated at Modern School, New Delhi, St. Stephen's College, Government College, Lahore, King’s College, and the Inner Temple in London. He practiced law at the Lahore High Court for several years before joining the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in 1947. He began a distinguished career as a journalist with All India Radio in 1951. From 1956 he turned to editorial services. He founded and edited Yojana, an Indian government journal in 1951–1953; The Illustrated Weekly of India, a newsweekly; The National Herald. He was also appointed as editor of Hindustan Times. During his tenure, The Illustrated Weekly became India's pre-eminent newsweekly, with its circulation raising from 65,000 to 400,000. Khushwant Singh was also a member of the Rajya Sabha (upper house of the Indian Parliament) from 1980-1986. After receiving the Padma Bhushan award from the President of India in 1974, he returned it in 1984 in protest against the Indian Government’s siege of Sri Harimandar Sahib, Amritsar, “Operation Bluestar” (the Battle of Amritsar).

ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਕਜ਼ਾਕ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਮਾਜ ਦੇ ਮੱਧਵਰਗੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਖੂਬੀ ਚਿਤਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਰੀਝਾਂ, ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਔਰਤ-ਮਰਦ ਸਬੰਧਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਭਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕਮਾਈ ਗਈ ਮਨੋਵਿਗਿਆਨਿਕ ਸੂਝ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਰਤੀ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਮਸ਼ੱਕਤ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਰੜੀ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਯਾਦਗਾਰੀ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਲਿਖੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕਜ਼ਾਕ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ 15 ਜਨਵਰੀ 1943 ਨੂੰ ਸ. ਸਾਧੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਆਮ ਸਾਧਾਰਨ ਦਿਹਾਤੀ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ। ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਅੱਧ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਛੱਡਣੀ ਪਈ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੀ ਰਾਜਗਿਰੀ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਾਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੁਟ ਗਏ।

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਰੜੀ ਘਾਲਣਾ ਘਾਲੀ ਹੈ, ਬਲਕਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਹੱਡਭੰਨਵੀਂ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਦਸਵੀਂ ਜਮਾਤ ਪਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਘਾਲਣਾ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਦੇ ਅਹੁਦੇ ‘ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਣਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਾਮਿਸਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੈ।

ਅਧਿਆਪਕ, ਮੰਚ-ਕਲਾਕਾਰ ,ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਗਤੀਸ਼ੀਲ ਲੇਖਕਅਤੇ ਫਿਲਮ ਸਟਾਰ ਬਲਰਾਜ ਸਾਹਨੀ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਮਈ, 1913 ਈ. ਨੂੰ ਰਾਵਲਪਿੰਡੀ (ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ) ਵਿਖੇ ਹੋਇਆ। ਬਲਰਾਜ ਸਾਹਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ, ਉਰਦੂ, ਹਿੰਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਅਬੂਰ ਹਾਸਲ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਟੈਗੋਰ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਣ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਤਰਜੀਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਬਲਰਾਜ ਸਾਹਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਨਮ ਭੂਮੀ ਰਾਵਲਪਿੰਡੀ ਦੀ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਯਾਦ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਰਹੀ। ਵੰਡ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਰਾਵਲਪਿੰਡੀ ਦੀ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੇ।

ਹਿੰਦੂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਬਲਰਾਜ ਸਾਹਨੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਅਤ ਦੇ  ਸ਼ੈਦਾਈ ਸਨ। ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਰੇ ਭਾਵੁਕ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਥਾਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹੋ, ਇਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਕੋਈ ਇਕੱਲੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਸਨ? ਇਹ ਸਾਡੇ ਵੀ ਸਨ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੈਗਾਮ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਾਨਵ ਜਾਤੀ ਲਈ ਹੈ।”ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਏ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਬਦਲੇ ਬਲਰਾਜ ਸਾਹਨੀ ਨੂੰ 1971 ਈ. ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵੱਲੋਂ ‘ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਤਕਾਰ’ ਵਜੋਂ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਜਵਾਦੀ ਸੋਚ, ਦੇਸ਼ ਪਿਆਰ, ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਤੇ ਫਿਲਮ ਜਗਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਬਦਲੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ 1969 ਈ. ਵਿੱਚ ‘ਪਦਮਸ਼੍ਰੀ’ ਦੀ ਉਪਾਧੀ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਵਿਭੂਸ਼ਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।

ਸੁਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਸਾਲ 1896 ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿਆਲਕੋਟ (ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ) ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਸਲੀ ਨਾਂ 'ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬਦਰੀਨਾਥ ਭੱਟ' ਸੀ। ਲਾਹੌਰ ਦੀ ਉਰਦੂ ਪਤ੍ਰਿਕਾ 'ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਦਾਸਤਾਂ' ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਈ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਛਪੀਆਂ । 'ਹਾਰ ਦੀ ਜਿੱਤ' ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬਦਰੀਨਾਥ ਭੱਟ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਸੀ, ਜੋ 1920 ਵਿਚ 'ਸਰਸਵਤੀ' ਵਿਚ ਛਪੀ ਸੀ।। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਈ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਟਕਥਾ ਅਤੇ ਗੀਤ ਵੀ ਲਿਖੇ ਹਨ । ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਲਗਭਗ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਦਰਸ਼ਵਾਦੀ ਹੱਲ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ।

"ਚੱਟੂ" ਲੱਕੜ ਜਾਂ ਪੱਥਰ ਦਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਉੱਖਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਸਾਲਾ ਕੁੱਟਣ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਇਹ ਕਹਾਣੀ 1947 ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਈ ਭਾਰਤ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਉੱਜੜੇ ਪਰ ਉੱਜੜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਸੇਬਾ ਕਿੱਦਾਂ ਕੀਤਾ, ਕਿਹੜੀਆਂ-ਕਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਦੁੱਖ ਤਕਲੀਫ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲੇ। ਇਹ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਲੜਨ ਦਾ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਦਿਨ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ।

Munshi Premchand (1880 – 1936) needs no introduction. In“Bade Bhai Sahab”, Premchand turns his gaze to an intimate portrayal of the affection and rivalry between two brothers who live in a hostel away from home. While the elder brother is studious and conscientious, the younger one prefers to spend his time flying kites and playing with friends.

Bhai Ghaniya (1648-1718), was a disciple of Guru Teg Bahadur. After the martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji his son Guru Gobind Singh raised Khalsa to fight against Mughals for restoration of human right, freedom of religion, equality and justice.
During the frequent battles between the Sikhs and the tyrant Mughals, Bhai Ghaniya Ji was often seen carrying a water container made of animal skin (mashak) to serve water to anyone who was thirsty in battle field. ਇਹ ਕਹਾਣੀ, ਕਹਾਣੀ-ਸ਼ਿਲਪ ਦੀ ਉਮਦਾ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਹੈ। ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਇੰਨੀ ਸਹਿਜ ਕਿ ਦਿਲ ਅਸ਼ ਅਸ਼ ਕਰ ਉਠਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਪੱਖੋਂ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਕਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਮੰਟੋ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ। ਉਹਦੇ ਪਾਤਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਰਮਜ਼ਾਂ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਦਿਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਅਰੁਕ ਸਿਲਸਿਲਾ ਰਚਨਾ ਦੇ ਅਖੀਰ ਤੱਕ ਬਰਕਰਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਰਾਇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਬਾਬਾ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਬਚਪਨ ਦੇਖਿਆ। ਰਾਏ ਬੁਲਾਰ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਏਕੜ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਜੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਾਲੂ ਜੀ ਝਿੜਕਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਰਾਏ ਬੁਲਾਰ ਜੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਖੁਦਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਝਿੜਕੇ ਤਾਂ ਰੱਬ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਝਿੜਕੇਗਾ।

ਸਾਡੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਲਈ 11 ਮਈ ਦੀ ਸਵੇਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਉਦਾਸ ਅਤੇ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਈ। ਮਾਂ ਬੋਲੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੇ ਲਾਡਲੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਮਹਾਨ ਕਵੀ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਸਦੀ ‘ਚ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੇ ਯੁੱਗ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਪਾਤਰ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਚਲਾਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਖਲਾਅ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੁੰ ਭਰਨਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਿਲ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। 

ਸੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੇਖੋਂ ਹੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਦੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਵੀਹਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸ਼ਾਇਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੱਤ ਚੋਟੀਆਂ ਹਨ: ਭਾਈ ਵੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ, ਪੂਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ, ਅੰਮਿ੍ਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ, ਮੋਹਨ ਸਿੰਘ, ਸ਼ਿਵ ਕੁਮਾਰ, ਪਾਸ਼ ਤੇ ਪਾਤਰ।

ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਲਜੇ ‘ਚ ਹਰ ਪਲ ਵੱਜਦੀਆਂ ਛੁਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਪੀੜ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਮੋਅ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਮੋਤੀਆਂ ਵਰਗੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਜੋਅ ਕੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਰੂਬਰੂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦਾ ਅਜ਼ੀਮ ਸ਼ਾਇਰ ਸੀ ਸਾਡਾ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਪਾਤਰ। ਇਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸ਼ਾਇਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਤਰ ਹੁਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਨੀ ਨਹੀਂ।

ਸ਼ਾਇਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੁੱਖ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ “ਹਵਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖੇ ਹਰਫ਼”, “ਬਿਰਖ ਅਰਜ਼ ਕਰੇ”, “ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਲਗਦੀ ਵਰਨਮਾਲਾ”, “ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ”, “ਪਤਝੜ ਦੀ ਪਾਜ਼ੇਬ”, “ਸੁਰ-ਜ਼ਮੀਨ”, “ਚੰਨ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੀ ਵਹਿੰਗੀ’ ਆਦਿ ਹਨ| ‘ਹਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖੇ ਹਰਫ਼‘ ਦੇ ਛਪਦੇ ਸਾਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਝੰਡੇ ਗੱਡੇ ਕਿ ਚਾਰ ਪਾਸੇ ‘ਪਾਤਰ, ਪਾਤਰ ਹੋ ਉਠੀ‘ । ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਪਾਤਰ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ 1993 ਵਿੱਚ “ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਲਗਦੀ ਵਰਨਮਾਲਾ” ਲਈ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਦਮੀ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ 1999 ਵਿੱਚ “ਭਾਰਤੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਪਰਿਸ਼ਦ ਕਲਕੱਤਾ” ਵਲੋਂ “ਪੰਚਨਾਦ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ” ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ| ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ 2012 ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ‘ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ’ ਦੀ ਉਪਾਧੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਨਾਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਹੈ।ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਬੇਪਨਾਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ।

ਪੰਜਾਂ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਹਣੀ ਸੁਖ਼ਨਵਰੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਸਰੋਤ ਬਣੇ ਰਹਿਣਗੇ।

Dr. Waryam Singh Sandhu, born on 10th of September 1945 is a famous Indian author of short stories. The writer published his first ever short story "Akhan Vich Mar Gayi Khushi" in the famous Punjabi magazine known as Preetlari.

In the year 2000, he was awarded with the Sahitya Akademi Award for his famous short story collection known as "Chauthi koot". Although he usually writes in Punjabi language, his works have been translated into various languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Urdu and English.
