0:18 - SONG: "Elves" from Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits
I met Rie Sheridan Rose at Excalibur Fantasy Faire. That was the first Renaissance festival I performed at. Rie became a fan of my band Brobdingnagian Bards. But one day, before I got to know her, she handed me lyrics and a cassette out of the blue. She had written a song and asked if I would sing it.
I'll be honest. I was a bit lazy. I didn't want to try to learn her melody.I never really did anything with the cassette. But I loved the lyrics. So I wrote some music for it. Andrew and I started playing the song. It was extremely well-received. Eventually, it was recorded for the Bards' album, Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales.
One day, I asked her to write lyrics for a Firefly soundtrack. Then I asked if she would write some hobbit drinking songs with me. Then came a pirate and dragon Steampunk project I came up with.
Twenty years later, we have over 30 songs that we've written together!
And while I do talk about Rie every now and then during shows and in emails. I don't think I ever did a show dedicated to the songs she and I wrote. Nor have I done a podcast dedicated to our music together.
Back in June, I finally remedied that during Coffee with The Cetlfather. I'm pleased to share that show with you right now.

The Foggy Dew is an Irish rebel song written to honor people who fought for Ireland's freedom during the Easter Rising of 1916. Instead of praising Irish soldiers who died fighting for England in World War I, the song asks why they were not fighting for their own land instead. It tells of ordinary men and women who stood up against a powerful empire, even when the odds were stacked against them.
That's why it's a rebel song—it's about choosing freedom, courage, and self-respect over obedience. Versions like the one by Erin Ruth keep that spirit alive, reminding us that quiet voices can still challenge injustice and inspire change.
18:25 - NEW PROTEST SONG INSPIRED BY STAR TREK: NEXT GENERATION
"Chain of Command, Part II" from Star Trek: The Next Generation centers on Captain Picard as a prisoner of the Cardassians. His captor, Gul Madred, uses pain and fear to try to control him. But the real goal is not information. It is obedience. Madred wants Picard to stop trusting his own eyes and accept what the government tells him is true. Again and again, Picard is pushed to say something he knows is false. The episode shows how power can try to rewrite reality—and how courage can be as simple, and as hard, as holding on to the truth.
It echoes George Orwell's 1984, reminding us that the final test of freedom is whether we trust our own eyes—or believe the government when it tells us we are wrong.

With honorable mentions to Beer Beer Beer, Fields of Athenry, Green Grows the Laurel, and A Stor mo Chro.
Joshua Ohmer: Most famous has to be Danny Boy, although it's not a favorite of mine. Then I'd say Whiskey in the Jar, Molly Malone... And if we can dip into modern Irish music, I'd say that The Cranberries' Zombie and probably something from U2, like Sunday Bloody Sunday should qualify as particularly famous Irish songs.
Janine Rinker: That's tough. I've only learned a few... Molly Mallone, Paddy Works on the Railway, a verse-ish of Danny Boy. I'd probably go with The Wild Rover and Whiskey in the Jar as the last two. I'd occasionally hear "They Kept the Pig in the Parlor" from my dad's family, but have to say that's an anti-Irish song.
