Happy Birthday from Ireland

lyrics and music by Marc Gunn

On St. Patrick's Day, I was born.
American by birth, my heritage unknown.
Twas two years ago on a musical journey
My heart flew to Ireland on the wings of a note.

* O Ireland, how I long for your valleys and mountains!
How I long to see your hills and streams.
From my home 'cross the ocean, I hear your voice singing,
"Happy Birthday from Ireland, my child of the green!
La la laa, la di la laa, la laa di la la
Happy Birthday from Ireland, my child of the green!"

My Da played the tunes on squeezebox and fiddle.
And the songs they were tuned to the harp in my soul.
St Paddy, ye never told me that I was Irish.
'Till I heard your voice singing, bringing me home.

Now two years have passed and Ireland sings with me.
In every song that flows from my voice and from harp.
But I see your eyes smiling and your arms wide open.
From the way your children open their hearths and their hearts

23:58 - HYPNOTIZED WITH FUNNY MUSIC

Cedric is the fiddler and one of the singers of Bedlam Bards, a comedic Celtic group from Austin, Texas that was one of my biggest influences when learning how to put on a show. This weekend, I sat down with Cedric to get an in depth interview about how he escaped Lubbock to join the SCA, form a Celtic band, and  hypnotize his audiences with charm and wit.

54:44 - Bedlam Bards “Crayfish” from Take Out the Trash

57:53 - LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE

James Hazelrig is not only a funny fiddler, he's also a certified hypnotist in Austin, Texas with a lot of funny advice on laughing. I chatted with him at the Sherwood Forest Faire where I start the show with him using some of his hypnosis training and marketing prowess to promote his shows. Then we go into a wonderful discussion of his life as a hypnotist and Laughing Yoga. This is a funny and informative episode you will enjoy.

Find more about James Hazelrig, aka Cedric the Fiddler, at hypnosisaustin.com.

1:30:49 - Bedlam Bards “Johnny Jump Up” from Furious Fancies

Every week, the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast asks fans of the show to vote for your favorite songs in the podcast. Those votes are compiled at the end of the year to create the Celtic Top 20, your pick of the best music of the year.

6:36 - Ed Miller “More Than Just a Dram” from Lolander

10:56 - THE STORY OF BUTTERCUP’S LAMENT

  • I wrote this song in December 2000. It began with the idea of a woman who's True Love was lost at sea. But as the story developed, it reminded me of Buttercup's "True Love"--Wesley--in the cult classic, "The Princess Bride"a, so I named it after her. It's a sad, but beautiful song, sung great a cappella or as I play it, with a solo autoharp.

15:24 - Marc GunnButtercup’s Lament” from Soul of Harper

Buttercup’s Lament

lyrics and music by Marc Gunn

There's a leaf on a tree and it's swaying
And a girl 'neath the tree tears in her eyes.
There's a wolf on the run saying 'Where have ye gone?'
'Oh where have ye gone sweet love of mine.'

Oh wind, cruel wind, bring and end, an end
To the storm that took me love afore his time
Oh wind, cruel wind, bring and end, an end
I long for him. Will ye bring my true love back to me side

There's a puddle on the ground and it's growing
And a girl above the pond tears in her eyes
There's a fox on the run saying 'Where have ye gone?'
'Oh where have ye gone sweet love of mine.'

There's a woman on the run saying, 'Where have ye gone?
Oh where have ye gone sweet love of mine?
Oh where have ye gone sweet love of mine?
Oh where oh where? I long for ye here.
Oh where have ye gone sweet love of mine?

19:54 - RENAISSANCE ADVENTURES IN JUGGLING

You'll learn why you should watch out for wild boar in Italy, see what happens when a juggler's props don't arrive, and learn about the most-beautiful place in Europe. I interviewed juggler Paolo Garbanzo.

Links for Today's Show:

43:22 - Enda Reilly “Off the Grid For a While” from Single

46:59 - BIKING ACROSS ITALY WITH CARL ASCH

Travel is a grand adventure to me. So I love talking with other adventurers. One such person is Carl Asch. He's a musician and juggler named Giacomo the Juggler. He sings with the band Empty Hats. He is also the co-founder with Paolo Garbanzo of Ren Adventurers, a tour company that takes you on small European trips much like my Celtic Invasion Vacations. But today, I wanted to talk to Carl about a bicycle trip he did across Italy.

In this episode we'll explore:

  • The origins of Giacomo the Jester
  • How juggling, magic, and street performing can take you around the globe
  • Double Indemnity and Empty Hats
  • How to write a compelling show for Renaissance festivals
  • Bicycling from Sicily to Venice following places mentioned in Shakespeare's plays
  • Shakespeare's Guide to Italy
  • Some of the trips on the Ren Adventures
  • Find out more about Carl Asch

9:28 - THE STORY OF SPIDERWEBS

  • Inspired by the episode “Our Mrs Reynolds” from the TV show Firefly
  • Talked about it in episode #6 of In the Verse.
  • Mal: Now, think real hard. You've been birddoggin' this township a while now. They wouldn't mind a corpse of you. Now, you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal, I swear, by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you.
Spiderwebs Lyrics

Bad men are bird dogging our town
Dogging our town, Bird dogging our town
Bad men are bird dogging our town
We’ll lay a trap for them.

We’re gonna spin a spiderweb
Spiderweb, Spiderweb
We’re gonna spin a spiderweb
That’s how we will catch them.

I’ll wear a soft cotton dress
A soft cotton dress, soft cotton dress
I’ll wear a soft cotton dress
With a pretty floral bonnet on top

Will shoot them down in the spider web
Spiderweb, spiderweb
Will shoot them down in the spider web
And celebrate our win

A pretty little girl has lured me in
Lured me in, lured me in
A pretty little girl has lured me in
Declared her love for me

She caught my heart in a spiderweb
Spiderweb , Spiderweb
She caught my heart in a spiderweb
Now how will this all end

She’s leading me to the end of the line
End of the line, end of the line
She’s leading me to the end of the line
We'll put things right again

I’ll break free from her spiderweb
Spiderweb, spiderweb
I’ll break free from her spiderweb
And never kiss a girl again

Come here little lady, May I meet you
I meet you, I meet you
Come here little lady may I meet you
Guess it begins again

It’s all a game of spiderwebs
Spiderwebs, spiderwebs
It’s all a game of spiderwebs
And everybody falls in

Troy emailed: "Hi Marc, I finished the epic Pub Songs podcast from Sherwood. That was a lot of fun! Thank you. I feel like I don't say that enough. It's a blast to follow your musical world.

Along the same lines, the Heroes CD is incredible. It's been getting regular play on the commute from work. Thank you for that too. I got a grin when you mentioned it on the podcast and said "you probably don't have this album."

I follow your blog via RSS feed, as I have for years. Sometimes the old ways still work. Anyway, I just read the one about social media not sparking joy for you. *raises hand* Right there with you on that one. I hear more and more that employers won't hire someone without a social media presence. Does it truly matter? I've never thought so. Sounds like you're coming to the same conclusion after years of being in the trenches on that. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the idea of immediacy, but everything seems to be immediate online. As they say, when everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. Unless you're one of these YouTube stars making bank on ad revenue for having millions of followers. Maybe then I'd get the need, but I don't follow any of those types.

It's a weird balance. People tell me I'm old for not being on Facebook. Many in the younger generation don't bother with it either. Not sure where that leaves me. But I know what I like. I seek out podcasts and music. That's how I found you years ago. I've never had a reason to second guess. It takes all types in the world. It's like that in any business too. It just seems to me that musicians make music. As Spock told Kirk, it's your first, best destiny. Anything else is a waste of material. ;)

I admire that you're willing to try new things, and I can't imagine how much of it comes down to marketing. In the end, you've built a solid product with a solid brand, and you continue to do so. It speaks for itself.

I did have one old school idea... have you thought about broadcasting your podcast feed on XM radio? Or even on local FM bands (in conjunction with local Ren Faires and cons)? Then the radio stations feel the need to advertise for you. Radio is where music lives, right? You probably have considered it, but it never hurts to toss an idea out there. I've wondered why, as popular as Ren Faires are now, why there is no Ren Faire Radio. But then... this is what you do in podcast form, isn't it? Is radio not the great granddaddy of all social media? Orson Welles knew it. Freddie Mercury knew it. 80 years on, has it really changed so much?

Apologies for rambling. In any case, this is a long-winded way of saying that this old school music fan appreciates you efforts. I have for years, and I will for years to come. I hope your move to Atlanta goes smoothly. All the best to you and yours."

Sherwood Forest Faire: Castle Building, Musical Women in History, Laughter Hypnosis18 Apr 201903:32:12

And you get 3 1/2 hours to do just that.

12:27 - THE STORY OF NAKED

Naked Lyrics

You're a stunning lady
Your emotions you hide
You tear down my defenses
With a wink of your eye

* You think it's a game
That only you can win
But that is insane, girl
Cuz it's you...Who's naked

That I undress your heart
You choose to downplay
Try to reclothe your thoughts
But your feelings you betray

Bridge:

You're breaking down now
Can I hold you when you cry?
Or will you disarm me?
'Fore you tell me goodbye
And leave me naked

Don’t shut yourself off
There’s no need to hide
Wanna know every part of you
Please let down your guard

21:27 - Marc Gunn “Naked” from Come Adventure With Me

WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY?

0:18 "The Hunter Set" by Runa from Current Affairs

Everyone is Irish on St Patrick's Day. But I prefer to see this as a holiday for everyone of Celtic ancestry. I don’t know how many kilts I’ve seen worn on the holiday, but it’s a lot.

8:25 FACT #1

Ireland is one of seven Celtic nations. These are the places that the Celts settled after invading their way from central Europe before finally being conquered by the Romans and driven to the fringes of continent.

The nations include: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man, Cornwall in Southwest England, Brittany in France, and Galicia in Northwest Spain.

While the Celts settled in those locations, they were eventually pushed out of those homelands to places around the world.

9:32 “Almost Irish” by Ceann from from Almost Irish and Best of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast

14:45 FACT #2

Boston, New York, New Orleans was one of the top 3 immigration points for the Irish during the potato blight of the 1800s. “Men of New Basin Canal” that honors the 30K Irishmen who died digging that canal.

15:22 “Men of New Basin Canal” by Marc Gunn & Jamie Haeuser from How America Saved Irish Music

18:29 FACT #3

March 17th is the holy day of St. Patrick in the Catholic church. Because of this, it was not celebrated like you find it today. In fact, March 17 was a dry holiday in Ireland until the 70s. All the pubs were closed. In 1995 they began celebrating it like in America.

It's quite a ironic that as a sainted holiday, St Patrick's Day is celebrated with drinking.

19:00 "St Patrick Never Drank" by Marc Gunn from Kilted For Her Pleasure

21:27 FACT #4

St Patrick was not Irish. He was born in Scotland or Wales in the 4th century. Originally, he was enslaved and taken to Ireland. He escaped, became a Christian and went back to convert the Celts. He died in Ireland on March 17, 461.

I was born on St Patrick's Day. I have a song for all those born on March 17th or of Irish heritage.

21:55 "Happy Birthday from Ireland” by Marc Gunn from Soul of a Harper

25:08 PUB CHAT

I want your feedback. What are you doing today while listening to the Pub Songs Podcast? How has this show inspired you?

Send a written comment along with any pictures to marc@marcgunn.com. Use the hashtag #pubsongs in the subject of your email.

River Godbee replied to my Marc's Musing email: "Typically I am cleaning up around the house, which never ends when you have a 5 year old! But I also listen while driving to work/school or going on walks. I used to use a variety of podcast apps, but now I stick to Spotify so that I can have my music and shows in one place. (It also makes it easier to find the albums you mention in the show.)

And for St Patrick's Day? Since I live in Savannah, I will be avoiding downtown and spending the day with my wife and daughter."

Carol Baril replied to Marc's Musings: "Hey Marc! Love the last Coffee with the Celtfather!  I was sick last week with a stomach bug and bad head cold so I listened on my phone while sitting at home with my kitties!  Usually I'm working at my desk and your Podcasts are a great way to relax thru the stress of computer work! I loved that Beer, Beer, Beer song with the Harry Potter twist!  Keep working on that one and you can put it on a new Sci-fi drinking song CD!!! Take care and give your girls hugs from me and my kitties!"

27:06 FACT #5

Green is most-often associated with St Patrick’s Day. But St Patrick’s color was actually blue.

And as a wild twist, I was told that the Scots wore orange. It wasn’t until much later I realized that green was the color of Catholics and orange was the color of Protestants. And of course the Republic of Ireland is largely Catholic.

27:35 “The Orange and the Green” by Brobdingnagian Bards from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales

29:56 FACT #6

St Paddy’s Day is the shortened version of St Patrick’s Day. However, that shortened name is often misspelled. It should be spelled Paddy. Not Patty.

Patty is a girls name. Paddy is short for the Irish name Padraig.

30:52 “P Stands for Paddy” by Emish from Sinners Make the Best Saints

36:30 FACT #7

The most famous Irish song is Danny Boy. But it’s not actually Irish. Okay the melody is an Irish tune called “Derry Aire”. But the lyrics were written by an English lawyer and songwriter named Frederic Weatherly.

I get the song requested so much that I play two versions of “Danny Boy”, the original and a parody about cats.

36:57 "Danny Boy for Cat Lovers" by Marc Gunn & The Dubliners' Tabby Cats from Whiskers in the Jar

40:00 FACT #8

The first St Patrick’s day parade was celebrated in New York in 1762. The Irish were trying to hold on to their heritage.

Parades sprang up around the world since then, most notably in Chicago where the river is dyed green. Dublin too now has a big St. Patrick’s Day parade.

40:37 "Patrick's Day Parade" by Mick Moloney from McNally's Row of Flats (Irish American Songs of Old New York)

44:05 FACT #9

The leprechaun is a fascinating and mischievous creature from Irish lore.

The modern representation was actually a racist link between the Irish and monkeys. It was meant to belittle the Irish immigrants in the early 1900s. It seems Irish Americans embraced and rebirthed the myth.

Oh and apparently, there are no female leprechauns in the lore.

I wrote a song that celebrates America’s contribution to the leprechaun myth and to Irish music.

44:36 "The Leprechaun" by Marc Gunn from Soul of a Harper

48:35 FACT #10

Slainte Mhaith is an Irish toast. It means “here’s to your good health”. In lovely Gaelic fashion, it’s spelled nothing like it sounds in English. So if you’re out drinking, be it Guinness or tea, raise a glass and repeat the Phrase.

48:53 "Slainte Mhaith" by Kilted Kings from Name On My Soul

50:53 FACT #11

More than 13 million pints of Guinness are consumed on St Patrick’s Day. I hope you will raise a glass also to Charlie Mopps, the fictitious inventor of beer.

51:11 "Beer, Beer, Beer" by Marc Gunn from Kilted For Her Pleasure

Celtic Heroes & Musical Legends #17825 Feb 201901:31:07

Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes.

I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land".

I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me.

Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes.

Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. So of course many of these you have heard on my podcasts.

Who are your Celtic music heroes?

Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the virtual Public House for Celtic culture and change through music. My name is Marc Gunn. I am a Celtic Geek musician and your guide to a kinder, happier world.

Today’s show is brought to you by my Heroic Gunn Runners on Patreon. These generous people pledge $10 per month so that I can keep creating music, podcasts and live streaming video shows like Coffee with The Celtfather. Of course, you can support me for any amount. But these are my heroes. Thank you!

Irish American Music for St Patrick's Day #17718 Feb 201902:15:35

If it wasn't for America, the traditional music of Ireland might no longer exist. America saved Irish music. That's the premise behind my 2014 album I recorded with Jamie Haeuser, How America Saved Irish Music.

I expected more of a backlash when I released the album title that was a parody of the book How the Irish Saved Civilization. I only got one nasty email.

I started immersing myself in Irish music in 1999. I learned a lot about Irish culture and music over the years. The Irish were forced out of Ireland. Their music traveled around the globe. It integrated with other cultures. Eventually, it found its way home.

When it did, it had changed. Blossomed and grew, yes. But changed as well

We all know that the jigs and reels are the backbone of Irish tunes. But underneath it, I heard something fascinating. It was the similarities between Irish and American rhythm.

The guitar was the clue. American guitarists changed music around the world. Listen to any guitarist playing Irish music and you will hear American rock-n-roll as its rhythmic backbone.

Irish guitar is rock-n-roll guitar underneath a reel and a jig.

This makes a little more sense when you think of Irish songs like "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye". That's the Irish version of the American Civil War song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". The Irish took a great American melody and gave it their own twist.

In a sense, How America Saved Irish Music is nothing new. Jamie Haeuser and I fused American rhythm, jazz, and blues to Irish immigration songs to create our own exploration of the Irish musical diaspora.

You'll hear the entire album this episode of the podcast, plus an interview with Jamie Haeuser.

We're making the world a happier place through conversation, education, and kindness.  If you have comments and want to chat in the pub, email me. Use #PubSongs when talking about this show. Celtic Music & the Dark Side of the Pub #17504 Feb 201901:18:23

Pubs are often dark places. I'm sure dark things have been discussed. Maybe I'm naive, but I don't feel they are any darker than what we find on social media.

I don't like social media. It brings out the worst in people. It makes the world a more vile place than it actually is. And so I avoid it, like the plague. Fair comparison.

That's one of the big reasons I changed things up this year. But before we get to this year, let's talk about last and the many things happening in the pub.

In this show, you will hear some of my picks of the best Celtic bands of 2018. You'll enjoy new music from the Brobdingnagian Bards to celebrate our 20th anniversary. Learn about the new Song Request feature of Coffee with The Celtfather. Understand my new mission statement for the podcast. And then we will chat about how the pain of engaging on social media outweighs its use and why I moved to YouTube. Finally, I launch a new feedback section today. So I need your feedback.

Finding the Bridge Between Celtic & Folk #17421 Jan 201902:19:00

Sometimes the things that matter most to us don’t matter as much to those we serve.

The Bridge is still one of my favorite albums. It features one of the best songs I feel like I ever recorded—“Peggy Gordon”.

And yet no one talks about the album.

There are many reasons why this may be. But one may be it just hasn’t found its audience.

They say anonymity is the greatest obstacle for musicians. So I’m gonna share this album in its entirety to reach a few more people.

If enjoy the album, buy it. Or add it to your library on Spotify. Share the show.

PUB TALK

Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast. My name is Marc Gunn. I'm a Celtic Geek musician and podcaster. Once again, I'm sharing one of my albums from start to finish.

The Irish diaspora to America brought the happy gift of Irish music, informing and influencing folk, ragtime, blues and even jazz. In this unique collection of original and traditional music, Celtic American musician Marc Gunn leafs through music known, remembered and new to find common themes, melodies and memories.

The Bridge is just that – a connection not only between Irish and American music, but also between Marc Gunn’s previous work primarily in Celtic music and his roots in folk, and newer influences of blues and jazz for this New Orleans-based musician.

Above all, the Bridge expresses Marc Gunn’s deep love for the music of both his home and where his heart resides.

Rebellion Songs for 2019 #17310 Jan 201901:15:25

If something is broken, fix it. That's what my dad told me when I was a kid.

The simple fact is things break all the time. We don't fix always fix them. We get stuck in a rut.

But it's the way things have always been. The way things are. It's a tradition. So we choose not to change.

2018 was a good year for me. I rebelled. I broke down traditional music business barriers. Now I'm forging a new path for a new year for my music...and for this podcast.

The Pub Songs Podcast is reborn this year. It's a little bit more like a pub. I’m not gonna plan every detail of what I say. Instead, I’m gonna kick back. We’re gonna chat about music... and stuff.

PUB TALK

Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast. My name is Marc Gunn. I'm a Celtic Geek musician and podcaster. Once again, I'm sharing one of my albums from start to finish.

St Andrew's is on November 30th this year. In addition to celebrating the feast of St. Andrew, it is also Scotland's official national holiday. So I'm gonna share my album Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion, from start to finish in this show.

This album was released on November 30, 2013, five years ago. It was fully produced, mixed and mastered by me.

Nathan Deese is a Celtic musician from North Carolina. He sang background vocals on the album. He also played bass, guitar, mandolin, whistle and flute on "Come Ye By Athrol", Green Grow the Rashes", "Ye Jacobites By Name", and "Flower of Scotland".

Daniel I Briggs sang background vocals as well and played bass, guitar, mandolin, octave mandolin and all other songs.

Jody Richardson added violin on "Loch Tay Boat Song"

Jon Richardson played concertina on "MacPherson's Farewell".

Most of the tracks were recorded in January 2011. I took my family on a trip up to middle-of-no-where Kentucky to record, while Gwen and baby Kenzie visited a friend in Lexington. I recorded this album, Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits, and St Patrick's Day all at the same time.

However, there were two tracks I re-recorded parts later. One was "Mingulay Boat Song". The other was "Flower of Scotland". And when you listen to those, notice the background vocals because I used the wrong settings on my USB preamp. So they came off more compressed sounding. And I LOVED the sound. They kinda make the songs.

I found it humorous that in "Ye Canna Shove Yer Granny" that I repeated a verse accidentally. And I didn't notice it while I was editing.

The front Photo on the album was taken by Jan Czenkusch on our Celtic Invasion of Scotland in 2013. She also took the pictures inside the CD. I took the ones on the back. And graphic design was by James McDaniel II.

Now most of these songs are traditional except for "Flower of Scotland" which is by Roy Williamson. "Mingulay Boat Song" which is by Sir Hugh S. Roberton. "Mari's Wedding" is by John Roderick Bannerman. And "Skye Boat Song" is by Sir Harold Boulton.' And of course Robert Burns wrote "MacPherson's", "Jacobites", "Scots Wha Hae", "A Man's A Man" and "Green Grow the Rashes".

I love this album. These are my absolute favorite Scottish, all except I couldn't get a good recording of "Loch Lomond". And some of these recordings, thanks to Nathan and Daniel, made this a powerhouse album in my opinion.

Subscribe at Celtfather.com if you want to find out more about some of the songs in the future.
And if you have any questions, email me.

PUB TALK

Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast. Yes, the name changed... again. And actually, for the foreseeable future, I'm not running regular shows. I'm gonna do something scary, that I've thought about for a long time. I'm gonna share each of my albums in full, from start to finish,

Of course, you can already stream all my music on Spotify, Google Play, Amazon Music, and lots other places. But now I’m going to share the show the podcast form as well.

Back in the 70s, DJs played entire albums from start to finish. I decided to do that on the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. It was a great success for several artists. But I'm just like all artists. I get nervous about giving everything all my music away for free... even if I know it's a smart marketing move. I learned this lesson years ago on MP3.com.

Since Halloween is just around the corner, it seemed appropriate to release my Happy Halloween Songs of Death as it could be called. Or for the ones you know my music Happy Songs of Death.

This album was first released on August 20, 2009. It  was produced by Ari Koinuma. He provided all of the background instrumentation. I did have some guest vocalists including Michael Younger, who died before the release of the album. It is dedicated to Michael.

Show #48 was a tribute show I recorded for Michael back in 2009.

Happy Songs of Death had two different album covers. One was designed by Nikki O'Shea. I called it "Death's Autoharp". It featured the Grim Reaper playing the autoharp with Nikki's popular comic book art style.

The second was designed by Celtic artist Ingrid Houwers. I called that "The Wake" because there's Celtic death theme with merriment. It actually almost has a Celtic/Mexican Day of the Dead feel to it. Really cool.

The songs are a mix of traditional Irish and Scottish songs as well as some traditional folk songs and several original songs as well. Subscribe at Celtfather.com if you want to find out more about some of the songs in the future.

And if you have any questions, email me.

10:29 - THE STORY OF BLINK

Lyrics

I love old things. They make me feel sad
Take me back to the past, And all the happiness I had.
But when I met you,  I could not close my eyes
I couldn't even blink, Lest you disappeared into time.

Asked you out for a drink. While the rain fell down.
I tried not to think. That you might turn me down.
You’re like an angel as old as the universe
You saved me from a lonely life that is so much worse.

Don't blink. Don't look away.
Life is too short.
I won't blink. I won't turn my back.
Let go of the hurt.
I won’t blink.

Things don't always happen. Like we dream and plan.
It's confusing at times. That's why I take your hand.
To grow old with you for as long as time goes by.
You showed me this moment and you opened up my eyes

PUB TALK

Every year, I host a Celtic Invasion Vacation. We travel to different places around the world and experience the local culture and sights of the region. There’s no traveling place to place. We get to know a region.

Last year, we went to Brittany in France. It was incredible. One of my favorite places was Cairn of Gavrinis. You can get a taste of the cairn along with some music and commentary on my YouTube channel.

In the new MageRecords.com store, that's my Bandcamp store, you can now get a Browncoats Independence Flag Sticker and a new Celtic Heartstring "Dragonfly".

My newest single is out. It’s called “Why Do You Torture Me”. Please add it to your Spotify playlists and library. Give it a listen.

The next CeltfatherLive concert is scheduled for Sunday, May 20 at 8 PM CST. Register at Celtfather.com/watch to join me for this free concert on YouTube.

I finished up a video challenge on YouTube last month. It was called Video Every Day in April. I happily completed the challenge. So you can watch 30 new videos in a playlist I created. They are not all music. Some are vlogs for Gunn Runners and others are for musicians.

That said, I have a bunch of new videos I've released. Every Tuesday, I put out a new music video. Right now, it's just me singing songs. But in the future, I hope to have more produced official music videos.

In the meantime, I hope you'll check out my videos of "She's Shiny", "Browncoat Baby", "Spancil Hill" "Jasper Tabby Kitty Cat-y", "Lord of the Pounce" and "Molly Malone". I think the videos are getting better. I'd love your thoughts.

I released two new singles to Patrons. The one in April is a comedy song called "Why Do You Torture Me?". The May one is of the "Mingulay Cat Song". There's also a podcast all about that episode on Celtfather Music & Travel. Check the link in the shownotes for details.

Funny Cat Songs #16715 Apr 201800:40:15

I have a new album up on Kickstarter. It's Sea Shanties for Cat Lovers. I have an extremely ambitious goal. So I need your support and I need your help sharing the project. You'll find a link in the shownotes.

For that reason, today's Geek Pub Songs is dedicated to funny cat songs. With two albums of Irish Drinkings for Cat Lovers, I have quite a few cat songs. But I also found a few funny cat songs by other artists.

This week in the Geek Pub, you'll enjoy music from Marc Gunn, Jamie Anderson, Ed Miller, Sarah Donner.

I have a brand new single that should be out very soon. It's called "Why Do You Torture Me?" And it's all about people requesting old songs that I no longer remember the lyrics to. The single will come out next month. But it'll be available to my patrons very soon.

If you love my music, please follow me on Spotify. Add my songs to your playlist. If you're looking for a great playlist to get started with, check out Top Irish & Celtic Music of the Week.

I know some musicians complain about how Spotify doesn't pay, but ye know what, streaming music is the future of the music industry. Yes, I would LOVE for you to buy my music too. But I'm honored that you would stream my music on Spotify as well. Please add it to your Spotify library and playlists. Spotify is great for sharing.

At some point outside of town, the train is robbed by Nishka's hired guns in a job that lasts from one commercial break to the next. How much distance away from the town did the Browncoats have to be in order to begin the operation in time? Alternatively, estimate the amount of force (in Newtons) Mal had to exert on Crow's chest to kick him into Serenity's intake."

Hopeful Love Songs are Shiny! #16513 Feb 201800:57:02

Welcome to the all new Geek Pub Songs. I say "new" but in all honesty, it's the same as the old Pub Songs Podcast but with a shiny new title and a new format. I changed to the title to fit a new niche. Yes, this show features a lot of Celtic music. As I am the host of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, I get a lot of awesome Celtic music. So you can expect that. But I wanted a title that better fits my music as well. Most of my original music is Geek Pub Songs. So I decided to make that the new focus.

In this show, you will hear Celtic music and Geek music mixed together. You'll also get a sneak peek at my new album of music inspired by Firefly. Yes, my album of Browncoat drinking songs called As Long As I'm Flyin' comes out on March 6, 2018. So I want to share that music with you.

Now the first section of each show will be the theme of the show. No telling what will pop in during the second set. But for now, I have some hopeful love songs that share.

PUB TALK

Listen to the Top Irish & Celtic Music of the Week on Spotify.

I first heard the song "Bean Phaidin" when I first took Gaelic lessons years ago. I love the melody, but I never really learned the lyrics. Now I feel like I've been missing out! Here's the lyrics.

Last week, I posted an interview with my fellow hobbit musician, Samantha Gillogly, on the Celtfather Music & Travel podcast. You can find a link to that interview in the shownotes. Incidentally, Samantha has a new band called Revival that is now crowdfunding a new album on indiegogo.

If you haven't heard yet, I am performing every Thursday in February at 11 am on my Facebook Live page. It's free show. I'll play about five songs on different themes. You can watch past ones there, or find individual song videos on my YouTube channel.

I'm also playing this Friday, Feb 16 at Interstellar Ginger Beer & Exploration Co. in Alabaster, AL at 8 pm. I'm sharing Sci Fi Drinking Songs. If you can't make that, join me on Sunday, Feb 18th on Concert Window. I hope you will join me.

March 6 is the official release of my Firefly CD. But in the meantime, you can get the Firefly Drinking Songs songbook as well as the Sci Fi Drinking Songs songbook in my merch store on Bandcamp.

And since Valentine's Day just happened and you might be in the mood for love, I posted a beautiful Celtic Love sticker in the store as well. It is two cats beautifully bound together in a Celtic heart knotwork. It was designed by Ingrid Houwers. And best of all, you'll also be able to download my Celtic Love compilation, including two unique songs. The sticker is only $5.

Bean Phaidin Lyrics

It's a pity that I am not, that I am not
It's a pity that I am not Páidín's wife
It's a pity that I am not, that I am not
And the woman he has is dead

I would go to Galway, to Galway
I would go to Galway with Páidín
I would go to Galway, to Galway
And I would return home with him in the boat

I would go to the Clifden market
And into Béal Áth in the Bay
I would look in through the windows
Hoping to see Páidín's wife

May you break your legs, your legs
May you break your legs, Páidín's wife
May you break your legs, your legs
May you break your legs and your bones

I wore out my shoes, my shoes
I wore out my shoes chasing Páidín
I wore out my shoes, my shoes
I wore out the soles and the heels

Welcome of the Pub Songs Podcast. This month, I'm gonna share a live concert I recorded during my Celtic Invasion of Brittany this past summer. But before we get there, let me share a little bit of news.

First, I've been really good about my new show on Facebook. It's called Coffee with The Celtfather. It takes place around 9 am... some mornings. There isn't really a set time or date. I'm trying to do these shows at least once a week. So far, Monday has been pretty consistent. But we shall see.

I also am trying YouTube as well. But the video quality doesn't strike me nearly as good as it is on Facebook. But I am cross-posting some Facebook videos to YouTube in case you are not on Facebook.

If you want to keep these shows going, make sure you Share the Show or drop money in my Virtual Tip Jar. Sharing the show helps expand my audience on Facebook. And of course, tipping lets me know that you really appreciate me making time to bring you good music online as well.

I have a bunch of new CD specials this month. Most are on my Bandcamp page. You can buy one Christmas CD for $20 and get three more. Best of all, these CDs can also be used as greeting cards. I only have a limited number of these album/greeting cards left. So get yours soon.

I sold my first Celtic Heartstring this week. The Celtic Heartstrings are made from the broken strings of my heart... I mean autoharp. I turn them in Celtic knot jewelry. Each one is unique. So I will try and post a new one every week or so.

Finally, there's a Brobdingnagian Bards Christmas special. It includes all of our remaining mass-printed CDs: Real Men Wear Kilts, Nex Monoceroti Per Risibus, Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales, Songs of Ireland, A Faire to Remember. You can get those five CDs for just $45 until December 5th. Plus I'll also send you A Celtic Christmas and A Celtic Renaissance Wedding. That's basically 7 CDs for the price of 3. http://thebards.net/

I want to send a Huge thanks to my New Patrons in the Gunn Runners Club: Jan DiMasi, Kimber Grey. Thanks to new Gold Runners Anita Gorrell and LauraMay Sorkin who raised her monthly pledge this month.

Alright. Next summer, I'm leading my next Celtic Invasion Vacation to the Isle of Skye in Scotland. These vacations are pretty incredible. We stay in one location and drive out to see the countryside. I make dinner some nights. I also play music.

Last summer, I recorded one of my concerts in our vacation rental. I'm gonna share that with you this month on the Pub Songs Podcast, in its entirety, complete with all my mistakes.

Let me set the mood. I think it was Wednesday evening. We had just finished up long day of sightseeing on the Celtic Invasion of Brittany, I believe to the Cairn of Gavrinis. That included a boat trip. You can watch a video about it on YouTube and hear my recording of "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea".

We were tired, but as we finished eating, I felt it was time to share some music. So I sat down and started playing. Invaders slowly filed into the living room to listen.

Here's my Carnac Celtic Concert.

If you want to find out more about the Celtic Invasion of Scotland, the basic itinerary is now online. We're gonna fly into Inverness. We'll then drive to the Isle of Skye and explore the island, it's history, and hopefully some good legends as well. Find all of the details here.

Autoharp Pub Songs #15908 Aug 201700:51:28

What is the autoharp? Why do I play it? I don't answer those questions but I do share some of my autoharp music with you as I prepare to re-launch Autoharp Radio. Listen. Subscribe. Get free music at pubsong.net.

I started to seriously play the autoharp in 1997. I was amazed by its versatility and 5-octaves that one could play on it. That's led a life-long journey of exploration of the instrument. Now, I am primarily a singer. However, I have done my best to offer a new sound to the autoharp community.

The songs I picked for this show are a mix of vocal and instrumental music where the autoharp plays an important part in the individual song or tune. I created it primarily for my AutoharpRadio.com website in conjunction with AutoharpMusic.com where you can find all sorts of great autoharp music tips and suggestions on how you can get started playing the autoharp. If you would like to see some tutorials, please email me.

Best Celtic Geek Pub Songs #15825 Jul 201701:17:50

I've released 22 albums since I started recording solo in 2004. I have so many albums that I wasn't sure what to put on my Celtic Geek compilation that I giveaway free to everyone who signs up to my mailing list. I decided to give one song from my first 20 albums.

I've often wondered if I should've just put together a "Best of Marc Gunn" album instead. The problem is picking those songs. I have a LOT of albums. Well, I finally sat down and thought about my most-requested songs over the years by the most listeners. Today's show highlights those songs.

I asked members of the Gunn Runners Club too and decided to add a few of their requests as well. You can find full shownotes and subscribe at http://pubsong.com/

In 2005, I crowdsourced my first album. It was Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers. I raised over $9000 to fund the production of the album. People LOVED the idea of cats and Celtic music. So I crowdsourced the next album, Whiskers in the Jar. I only raised about $6000. The album has sold about half as well as the first, and I only recently recouped the expense 8 years later. Yet, the hardcore fans of the albums have repeatedly shouted, "We want another cat CD!" Thus came the title Sea Shanties for Cat Lovers.

I REALLY want to make it happen. But I'll be honest. I don't know if more than a handful of people want the next album to happen. I have a mailing list at catdrinkingsongs.com. I asked them to promote the album. There was a short period of shares. Then it all stopped. The Facebook continues to grow at snails pace. I'm not sure this is something I should put my time in.

I've decided that there's just one way to find find out if you're truly passionate about these CDs--Kickstarter.

Kickstarter is an all or nothing website. If you don't reach your goal, you get nothing. If you do, you get to make it happen.

I've decided that I need at least $15,000 to make this album properly. That'll allow me to hire a producer and record the songs with full instrumentation, just like the last two albums that were produced by Ari Koinuma and Rich Brotherton, respectively.

Would you like to see this album happen? Sign up at catdrinkingsongs.com.

Women Pub Songs #15706 Jun 201700:36:05

Women are under-represented in music in general. Even more so when it comes to pub songs. I'll be honest. I can't think of one women from Ireland focusing on pub songs. In fact, the first place I think of women singing drinking songs is at Renaissance festivals. And so, you'll note several bands in this show from there. Get FREE MP3s at http://pubsong.net.

Rebel Pub Songs #15609 May 201700:48:56

This is a show of Rebel Songs. From traditional Irish rebel songs to rebel songs inspired by Firefly, you'll hear a fun mix of songs to get your blood boilin' with music from Marc Gunn, Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones, Brobdingnagian Bards, The Kilt Lifters, Crikwater, Marc Gunn & The Dubliners' Tabby Cats, Bedlam Bards, 3 Pints Gone, Kilted Kings, Ed Miller. Listen and share. Then subscribe for 5 Free MP3s at http://pubsong.net/.

Before we get started, I want to let you know that my next album of Firefly music is now being funded on Kickstarter. It's called "As Long As I'm Flyin'". You have until May 18, 2017 to make a pledge if you want a physical CD. After that go to FireflyDrinkingSongs.com.

I started compiling this episode at the beginning of 2017. I planned to use it as a platform to share my anger and frustration with the Trump administration's assault on civil rights, health care and the environment. But I decided not to. Overall, that's not what I do musically. Instead, I'll let the songs speak for themselves.

Politics is a huge part of Celtic culture. I heard a quote by Irish songwriter Frank Harte on the Irish Music Stories podcast (episode 2) that said, "Those in power write the history. Those who suffer write the songs." For that reason, many of the best traditional Irish songs are rebel songs. They are the songs of people who suffer.

When I started playing rebel songs with the Brobdingnagian Bards, we played them, not for the politics, but because they were powerful songs.

This show is dedicated to rebel songs in general. The first half has some more traditional rebel songs. The second half are the not-so-traditional ones. And I promise to leave my politics out of any discussion.

If you're new to this podcast, I want you to think first if you enjoyed that first song. Because if you don't like my music, you won't like this show. So stop listening now.

I have released over 20 studio albums since 2004. I thought it would be nice to make playlists of my music, when I realized, I have been publishing this podcast since 2005. This is the perfect place to create a Marc Gunn playlist. So over the next two hours, you will enjoy lots of my music, intermixed with a small sampling of my favorite bands from the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.

I say small, because there's a lot of great music, and I also am aiming for a drinking songs feel to this show. Because that's kinda what I do. Sci Fi and Irish drinking songs, merged together in harmony.

But don't worry. There's a bunch of trad tunes in the mix as well...

There's no reason to remake a song unless you can give it your own slant...that's just a cover and I think there is a real difference. I know you said your voice is better, but would it just sound more like Leonard Cohen? If you think it could sound more like Marc Gunn doing homage, then do it! I think this version sounds like a nice version of Marc Gunn doing the song. I wouldn't want to speak for Leonard Cohen, but he seemed very enthusiastic about sharing his music and verse.. if you want to do it again... do it, see how it goes!"

Finally, how would you like a free album of my music? Plus, you'll get a friendly email from me every week or so where you hear what's new? Go to www.pubsong.net for details.
