These two duos rode te wave of the first British Invasion and ad similar careers. In the case of Peter & Gordon, they had the privilege of having songs written for them by Paul McCartney. They were the first act to have a hit record that was a Lennon-McCartney composition that was not recorded by The Beatles. Chad & Jeremy relied on their own songwriting and developed their craft that helped sustain their career in the merging Psychedelic era. These were the top two British Duos of the Sixties.

They would be known as The Greatest Rock & Roll Band in The world.

This is a special tribute show to the unique and wonderful Miss Mercy, the counter-culture figure and former member of the Frank Zappa produced girl group, The GTOs. She was the originator of the Gothic-Gypsy look that has been in fashion in successive years. She was original and was in attendance at special events in rock history like The Monterey International Pop Festival, Altamont, Jimi Hendrix's Rainbow Bridge concert and the Wattstax Festival. She had great taste im music and she was a good friend of mine. This show will feature her favorite music plus some tracks that she sang on for The GTOs and The Flying Burrito Brothers. This is my tribute to Mercy dedicated with love and affection to her and her friends and family.

During the Psychedelic era, bands would tend to write songs that would be abit more whimsical and engaging with lyrics that had mystic imagery and light-hearted themes. The music was uncomplicated and very melodic and stirring with it's simplicity. The songs could be described as "Childlike" as they tended to have an immediate appeal to both children and adults. This show has collected songs for the enjoyment of all ages and I'm also doing a reading from select passages from the chapter "Piper at the Gates Of Dawn" from the Kenneth Graeme book "The Wind in The Willows".

These were the first rumblings of heavy metal thunder.

Another new era began in the wake of the first wave of the British Invasion and this time the World went from a black and white bleak scene to a world that was glowing in glorious colours. The psychedelic era in London encapsulated multi media events, poetry readings, free schools, the first underground press with the publication of The International Times, the 14-Hour Technicolour Dream at the Alexandra Palace and the release of The Beatles 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album. These are some of the bands that were part of the scene.

Hollywood was the center of the music business and L.A. bands had a distinct advantage over other bands who lived in other States and towns. The Byrds started a new scene and transformed old Hollywood to the new hip capital of the nation. American bands were finally able to counter The British Invasion. They had their own scene and their own landmarks to celebrate their music. The San Francisco Sound was a cross between blues, some jug band music and the new electrified sounds that amplified the Bay Area scene. There were extended jams and studio experimentation. Mainly it was a party that everybody wanted to go to. The Monterey International Pop Festival created such a buzz that the party lasted all summer of '67. We will hear a sample of some of the important bands of the time.

We lost one of the important English Blues figures this past week. This is a tribute to the late John Mayall. He was influential in bringing three prominent guitarists in the public eye. At different points on his band The Bluesbreakers, he featured Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. This is a tribute to his legacy.

Frank Zappa led an amazing musical ensemble throughout the 1960s. The Mothers of Invention played styles like jazz, hints of classical music, Avant Garde, experimental music all within a rock context. They recorded several brilliant albums throughout the Sixties and we're going to listen to select tracks from those albums. Enjoy the musicality and humour of one of the greatest composers of the last century, Frank Zappa.

This episode focuses on two of Los Angeles's most Underground bands from the 1960's. They are the mercurial West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and The Freak Scene. The West Coast Pop Art Band had one of the first light shows, though their records didn't sell, and the band remains a footnote in the Psychedelic era. The Freak Scene were a studio-only ensemble wo tried to capture the sound and feeling of the underground nationwide on their sole album, "Psychedelic Psoul". Yes, that's where this show gained it's name.
