| Is the Ugarte Party Over in Paris? | 26 Jun 2024 | 00:25:34 | |
Summer has officially arrived, and so has a fresh batch of transfer rumors to get Paris Saint-Germain supporters excited for next season. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Jonathan Johnson from CBS Sports to discuss the latest PSG transfer rumors, and we also get an update on Ligue 1 broadcast rights. First, we get to the breaking news that Manchester United has reportedly made an initial offer for midfielder Manuel Ugarte. I get Johnson's thoughts on why PSG would be ready to move on from Ugarte after one season and whether he would be a good fit at Manchester United and other clubs who may be interested in the Uruguay international. Next, we discuss whether PSG should move on from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and instead use Luis Enrique's influence to potentially persuade Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams to come to the Parc des Princes. I also asked Johnson who would be a better fit for PSG: Rayan Cherki from Olympique Lyonnais or Stade Rennais youngster Désiré Doué. We conclude with the latest on Xavi Simons and what might be keeping him from returning to PSG, under-the-radar players at the UEFA European Championship and Copa América who could be a good fit at PSG, and the potential impact on Ligue 1 teams if a broadcast deal is not agreed upon soon. | Paris Saint-Germain Close to Building a Perfect Squad | 09 Jul 2021 | 00:49:40
When it comes to the summer transfer window, no team treats its fans better than Paris Saint-Germain. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Guillaume Delaporte and James Teague to discuss all of the latest additions to the PSG squad and whether the new faces are enough to convince Kylian Mbappé to sign an extension. Up first, we break down arguably the signing of the transfer window, Achraf Hakimi from Inter Milan. The highly-rated right-back is exactly the type of player PSG desperately needed and at a reasonable transfer fee, too. With Hakimi solidifying the right-back position, does PSG have a defensive back four capable of winning the UEFA Champions League? PSG continued to address its defense by adding Sergio Ramos on a free transfer from Real Madrid. Despite being 35-years-old, Ramos is regarded as one of the toughest and most talented center-backs in the game today. We debate whether he could replace Presnel Kimpembe in the starting lineup, especially for big Champions League matches. Gianluigi Donnarumma isn't officially a PSG player but it's expected to be announced soon. Should Mauricio Pochettino replace Keylor Navas in goal if it's clear that the Italy international is the better player? We conclude the podcast by discussing additional holes in the squad, including the need to add a talented midfielder like Paul Pogba. We also discuss whether PSG are now the favorites to win the Champions League and how long Pochettino will last in Paris if he struggles to get off to a fast start. | Fabrizio Romano on How PSG Snatched Wijnaldum From Barcelona | 10 Jun 2021 | 00:18:39
All episodes of PSG Talking are special, but this one even more so as we're joined by the most influential journalist when it comes to football transfers. On today's show, I'm pleased to hand over the hosting duties to PSG Talk writer, Eduardo Razo, and he is joined by Fabrizio Romano to discuss all of the latest transfer news surrounding Paris Saint-Germain. We begin the show by discussing the breaking news of PSG signing Georginio Wijnaldum after it appeared the former Liverpool FC midfielder was heading to FC Barcelona. How did PSG convince him to come to the French capital? Hint: It wasn't all about money. Next, Razo asks about the reports linking Gianluigi Donnarumma with a move to PSG. How did one of the best young goalkeepers in the world end up as a free agent and why does he want to come to PSG? One signing many PSG supporters are eager for is Achraf Hakimi at Inter Milan. However, as Romano explains, the Italian club will only sell for an impressive price as he was one of the best right-backs in Serie A last season. The show concludes with a conversation about Mauro Icardi potentially leaving PSG this summer, whether Cristiano Ronaldo will end his career at PSG, and the latest on Kylian Mbappé's contract situation with Romano reporting that Liverpool FC is out of the race to sign the Frenchman. | Pochettino Caught Talking to His Ex; Transfer Rumors | 01 Jun 2021 | 00:51:33
The season has only just concluded and already, Paris Saint-Germain is making headlines. It's going to be a long summer... On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Cose Espinosa and Carl-Oscar Källström to discuss PSG's managerial situation and the latest transfer rumors. Up first, we break down the situation regarding Mauricio Pochettino where a shocking report revealed that Tottenham Hotspur had reached out to him regarding a potential return to the North London club. We debate the validity of the report and whether PSG fans should be upset that their recently-appointed manager had contact with his former team. I also ask the panel about Zinedine Zidane stepping down at Real Madrid and whether that could be influencing Pochettino's desire to look for an exit in case PSG makes a move for the French football legend. The first part of the podcast concludes with us applauding Thomas Tuchel and Thiago Silva on winning the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea FC and questioning whether PSG made the right decision to move on from both. On the second half of the podcast, we discuss the most credible transfer rumors, including Achraf Hakimi and Theo Hernandez potentially coming in to bolster PSG's full-back positions. We also debate whether PSG needs to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma and if FC Barcelona's recent signings will convince Lionel Messi to stay or look for a move to the French capital. The show concludes with us listing playing PSG should try and sell this summer and what the latest transfer rumors and managerial changes could mean for Kylian Mbappé signing an extension. | Second Place is the First Loser | 26 May 2021 | 00:48:37
Paris Saint-Germain's 2020-21 season came to an anti-climatic end with only one trophy to show for its efforts. Now that the dust has settled, it's time to figure out what went wrong and how to improve for next season. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Cosé Espinosa for a one-on-one chat about PSG's campaign in which they finished runners-up to Lille OSC in Ligue 1 and fell short once again of their UEFA Champions League dreams. Up first, it's all about Ligue 1. We look back at the season and try to figure out where things went wrong and whether the managerial change had anything to do with the inconsistent play we saw from the squad this season. With Lille winning the title, many expect the club to sell its best players. We discuss whether that's the best strategy or would Lille and French football be better served if they kept their squad together and attempted to make a run at the knockout stage of the Champions League. Looking ahead to next season, we assess how long Mauricio Pochettino will have next season to turn things around and debate whether PSG would sack him right now if Zinedine Zidane became available. Towards the end of the show, we highlight a few transfer targets we would like to see arrive in the summer, including Eduardo Camavinga from Stade Rennais. We also give an update on Kylian Mbappé's contract situation, name our PSG MVP, and I continue my campaign to try and get Twitch to buy the United States television rights to Ligue 1 from beIN Sports. | Searching for Answers After Manchester City Dismantling | 07 May 2021 | 00:48:40
Paris Saint-Germain was unsuccessful in keeping a club that didn't even want to be in the UEFA Champions League from reaching the final and they only have themselves to blame. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Cose Espinosa and Carl-Oscar Källström to discuss PSG's 2-0 defeat (4-1 on aggregate) to Manchester City in the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League. After an impressive run in the tournament, defeating FC Barcelona and FC Bayern Munich in the knockout stage, PSG's fizzled out like a defective firecracker against the Premier League leaders. We discuss what happened and perhaps more importantly, who is to blame. In the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, Mauro Icardi was called upon to start alongside Neymar Jr. and Angel Di Maria, but the former Inter Milan striker struggled mightily and was subbed off shortly after half-time in favor of Moise Kean. Is Icardi such a poor fit that he should be sold this summer or can PSG build around him? Kylian Mbappé was left on the bench and didn't play a second in the second leg. Should Mauricio Pochettino have started him to try and get an early goal or was he right to rest his injured superstar? We also discuss Di Maria's sending off in the 69th minute and the resulting comments from CBS commentator Jim Beglin who used the phrase "Latino temperament" to describe the Argentina international's questionable decision-making. We wrap up the show by grading Pochettino's performance against City, sharing who we want to win the Champions League final, and whether this season should be defined as a success if they come from behind to win Ligue 1. | PSG Gift Manchester City Advantage in Champions League Semi-Final | 29 Apr 2021 | 00:50:24
Paris Saint-Germain picked the worst time of the season to revert back to their old ways and now, they have an uphill battle in their quest for UEFA Champions League glory. On this episode of PSG Talking, I’m joined by Matt Gooding and Guillaume Delaporte to break down PSG’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the semi-final of the Champions League. The match was a tale of two halves, but we try to start with the positives. In the first 45 minutes, PSG was able to score a goal through a Marquinhos header and Angel Di Maria skipped around defenders with ease. Truth be told, PSG should have probably scored two goals as Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappé both had excellent opportunities, but they were chances that would go unfulfilled. It doesn’t take us long to get to the negatives of this match for PSG. In the entire second half, PSG struggled to move the ball out of their own end and City’s pressing created chance after chance. Even with PSG causing their own problems, City still couldn’t score. It took an uncharacteristic mistake from Keylor Navas on a Kevin De Bruyne cross and one of the worst walls of all time on a Riyad Mahrez free-kick to push City into the lead. Was it Pep Guardiola’s tactics or was this simply a case of PSG giving the game away? We also talk about Idrissa Gueye’s ridiculous challenge that led to a red card, that mistake from Navas that led to City’s first goal, whether Neymar should have been awarded a penalty in the first half, and look ahead to the return leg at the Etihad Stadium. | Super League is the Worst Good Idea in Sports History | 24 Apr 2021 | 00:51:01
This week might have been the most chaotic since news broke in 2017 that Neymar Jr. was leaving FC Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Matt Gooding and Marc Damon to discuss the rise and fall of the European Super League and look ahead to PSG's upcoming UEFA Champions League tie against Manchester City. We begin the show with the Super League and the owners of the 12 clubs who decided to break off and start their own European competition before realizing fans would be upset and backed out. With many of the teams in dire financial situations, should fans feel some level of sympathy or does it simply come down to poor money management? With the Super League's website still live as of the publication of this podcast, we wonder whether or not the league is truly dead or if it will be revived at some point. Can an American-style competition ever truly work in European football? Next, we look ahead to the match against Manchester City at the Parc des Princes and give our prediction. What starting lineup will Mauricio Pochettino go with and will he surprise fans by starting the very much in-form Mauro Icardi? I also share my conspiracy theory that UEFA will go out of their way to help PSG win the Champions League as they're the only team left that didn't decide to blow up the entire tournament. | How Paris Saint-Germain Cracked the Bayern Munich Code | 15 Apr 2021 | 01:00:51
Paris Saint-Germain lost the battle against FC Bayern Munich, but they won the war and will advance to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by James Teague, JC, and Carl-Oscar Källström (albeit a little late), to break down PSG's 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at the Parc des Princes that was ultimately just enough to see Les Parisiens through to the next round via the away goal rule. Up first, I ask the panel if the best team advanced. So much was made of Bayern's performance in the first leg and how statistically, they outplayed PSG, but at the end of the day, it was Mauricio Pochettino's squad that scored the goals needed while the Germans wasted chance after chance. The opening 45 minutes for PSG was especially thrilling. Neymar Jr. was sensational and reminded everyone why he's considered one of the best. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to find the back of the net and instead hit the post and crossbar while attempting to score. Kylian Mbappé was at his best as well, but he was called offside numerous times as he attempted to exploit Bayern's high defensive line once again. I ask the panel what they thought of PSG's superstars and whether this was their best performance for PSG to date. While Neymar and Mbappé get all of the headlines, we give some love to PSG's defensive unit who held on in the waning minutes under intense pressure from Bayern. Idrissa Gueye, Presnel Kimpembe, Colin Dagba, Danilo Pereira, and Keylor Navas were outstanding on the night and I ask the guys just how they managed to only allow one goal. Next, we discuss Pochettino and what he did tactically to frustrate Bayern Munich. Was his decision to not play Marco Verratti and Alessandro Florenzi the right one? I also ask the guys whether or not they believe if former manager, Thomas Tuchel, would have been able to advance past Bayern. After the match, many pundits had to give PSG credit for their accomplishments this Champions League season, but one, in particular, felt like he needed to take a shot at the club, its best players, and the French league. Jamie Carragher, who is a former Liverpool FC player and current pundit for CBS Sports, tried to make the point that Neymar and Mbappé have no business playing for PSG because of the perceived weakness of Ligue 1. His argument, as I understand it, is that those players are only in Paris for the money and he even goes as far as to say PSG is not a big club. You can watch a clip of the comments below and you know we go in on Mr. Carragher for his foolish comments. To wrap up the show, we look ahead to the semi-final tie against Manchester City and discuss which players in their squad PSG may have trouble with over two games. | Bayern Munich Was Arrogant Against Paris Saint-Germain | 09 Apr 2021 | 00:54:15
It's been an up-and-down season for Paris Saint-Germain but when the bright lights of the UEFA Champions League are on, they've delivered more often than not. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Guillaume Delaporte and Carl-Oscar Källström to break down PSG's surprising 3-2 victory over Bayern Munich in the quarter-final of the Champions League. We begin the show with our overall thoughts on the result. Most PSG Talk contributors were cautiously optimistic about PSG's chances but scoring three away goals against arguably the best team in Europe was unexpected. Statistically, Bayern dominated PSG everywhere except for goals scored, and the reason why could be blamed on their arrogance in thinking they could get away with a high defensive line like they did in last season's Champions League final. This time, Kylian Mbappé was able to exploit the high line to the tune of two goals. Will Hans-Dieter Flick set up his team the same way in the return leg knowing he needs goals to advance to the next round or can PSG expect a tactical change? After the match, much of the conversation centered around who wasn't on the pitch for Bayern. Robert Lewandowski was out injured and many speculated that if he were fit, he would have finished several of Bayern's scoring opportunities. However, PSG was without Marco Verratti, Leandro Paredes, and was down to their third-string full-backs. Should Mauricio Pochettino and PSG get more credit for this result considering who they were without? Towards the end of the show, we switch gears slightly and discuss a recent New York Times article in which the author writes about the plethora of talent in the Paris region and PSG's inability to bring those players through their academy and into the starting lineup. Could PSG's new training facility make the difference and help the club keep the best players in the French capital? We close the show by discussing other results around the Champions League including whether Borussia Dortmund can pull off the upset over Manchester City. | We're Feeling Something, Not Sure What It Is | 25 Mar 2021 | 00:57:37
The international break is underway but there is still plenty to discuss when it comes to Paris Saint-Germain. On the latest PSG Talking, I'm joined by Matt, Cose, and Guillaume to evaluate the state of the club at a pivotal point in the season. We begin the show with a recap of PSG's 4-2 win over Olympique Lyonnais that saw Les Parisiens move to the top of the Ligue 1 table. Has PSG become a team that performs at its best when the pressure is at its highest? Also, we analyze what Mauricio Pochettino has done tactically to get the most out of Kylian Mbappé. Next, the panel shares their thoughts on the UEFA Champions League quarter-final draw against FC Bayern Munich. Have the Germans gotten worse since last year's final? Is being the underdog actually a good thing for PSG? We conclude the show by discussing Neymar Jr.'s impending contract situation and whether the club should put provisions in place to protect themselves given his injury history. We also answer a few questions sent in by listeners. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. Want more PSG? | Making Sense of the Latest Transfer Targets | 19 Jun 2024 | 00:30:40
The Ligue 1 transfer window is officially open, and Paris Saint-Germain have already signed their backup goalkeeper. What else could be in store for the French champions as they rebuild for next season and look to replace Kylian Mbappé? On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Robin Bairner, chief editor of Football Transfers and columnist for PSG Talk Extra Time. We discuss the top players linked with a move to PSG, who might be leaving, and a potential breakout star for the France national team. Up first, we discuss the potential arrival of Napoli's Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and whether another club could swoop in ahead of PSG to win his signature. It's been made public that the player wants to leave to play in the UEFA Champions League, but the Serie A club has stated they have no intention of letting the Georgia international leave. Bairner shares his thoughts on why Manchester City would be willing to part ways with Julián Álvarez and whether PSG could face competition from another Premier League club in their efforts to sign the attacker. At 19 years old, João Neves is one of the most talented teenagers in world football. Benfica appear ready to let him leave, but they want a transfer fee north of €100 million. Will the Portugal international leave Benfica and could PSG potentially swap players to lower the transfer fee? Leny Yoro is PSG's preferred center-back signing, but if he leaves Lille OSC for Real Madrid instead, who should PSG target? I ask Bairner about Kevin Danso and other defenders who could be a good fit at the Parc des Princes. The show concludes with Bairner sharing whether he thinks Bradley Barcola or Randal Kolo Muani could step up for France should Mbappé miss time due to a broken nose. We also get a transfer prediction featuring a player who is not currently linked with PSG but should be. | Navas Denies Barcelona Remontada Sequel | 11 Mar 2021 | 00:58:06
Whew! It was downright painful to watch but Paris Saint-Germain are through to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after a 1-1 draw against FC Barcelona (5-2 on aggregate). On the latest episode of PSG Talking, I'm thrilled to be joined by James and Carl-Oscar, two contributors we haven't had on the show in a while but are passionate PSG supporters who know their stuff. We begin with our overall thoughts on a match that most supporters would call disappointing. Sure, PSG drew and advanced to the next round over their European rivals, but Barcelona's dominating performance definitely puts manager, Mauricio Pochettino, under the microscope (especially after the decision to start Julian Draxler). Miraculously, PSG did score first via a Kylian Mbappé penalty in the first half and we debate whether the penalty should have been given at all after incidental contact on Mauro Icardi. Speaking of penalties, the match turned on its head right before halftime when Layvin Kurzawa conceded a penalty. Lionel Messi, coming off a rocket shot to tie the game, stepped up to take the penalty that was ultimately saved by Keylor Navas. That effort alone would have made Navas the Man of the Match but the Costa Rica international made one spectacular save after another on the night and he showed why PSG moved on from players like Alphonse Areola and Kevin Trapp. In the second half, Pochettino used all of his substitutions, including taking off the struggling Kurzawa for Abdou Diallo. We discuss the manager's decisions, Diallo's surprisingly excellent performance, and how Angel Di Maria helped PSG close out the game. We wrap up the show by discussing the team's we hope PSG draws in the quarter-finals, whether Messi will come to PSG in the summer, and TV shows/movies we're watching at the moment. After that 90 minutes of hanging on for dear life, I think we all could benefit from watching something non-football. | Ligue 1 Title Race; Neymar's Return; Barcelona Preview | 05 Mar 2021 | 00:49:07
For Paris Saint-Germain supporters, March 10, will either bring closure to one of Europe's biggest football feuds or, re-open a gaping wound that the club may never recover from. No pressure! On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Matt, Guillaume, and Cose to discuss PSG's recent performances in Ligue 1, Neymar Jr.'s return from injury, the return leg against FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, and so much more. Up first, it's all about the battle for Ligue 1. Currently, PSG sits two points behind Lille OSC in the table thanks to an inexplicable loss to AS Monaco following the 4-1 win over Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League tie. PSG was able to rebound against Dijon FCO and Girondins de Bordeaux, but how confident should fans be that PSG can defend their title? Next, we switch gears to talk Champions League and Neymar in particular. The PSG superstar is back in training but should the club risk further injury by rushing him? Considering Barcelona's recent comeback against Sevilla FC in the Copa del Rey, PSG could use all the firepower they can get to see out this tie and advance to the next round. Our crew shares their predictions for the match as well as potential starting lineup options for Mauricio Pochettino to consider. We may get some insight into what the manager is thinking this Saturday when PSG takes on Stade Brestois 29 in the Coupe de France. We wrap up the show with some light-hearted conversation about Juan Bernat's birthday cake, Everton FC supporters, and we share some of the TV shows and movies that are keeping us occupied between matches. ***Visit https://manscaped.com and use code PSGTALK to receive 20% off and free shipping*** Paris Saint-Germain's 4-1 win over FC Barcelona in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League was predicted by very few but celebrated by every supporter around the globe. On the latest PSG Talking podcast, I welcome Mel, Matt, Guillaume, and Ty to break down the game and pinpoint just how Mauricio Pochettino got it so right against PSG's hated European rivals. We start by asking the panel to give their overall thoughts on the match. From Leandro Paredes' masterclass in midfield to Layvin Kurzawa surprisingly strong performance at left-back, we discuss the players who made it all happen for Paris. One player who deserves a lot of credit for the result is Kylian Mbappé who scored a hat-trick on the night. After struggling to score in the Champions League under the previous manager, Thomas Tuchel, what did Pochettino do to unlock Mbappé? Later in the show, I ask whether or not this result has killed Barcelona. Lionel Messi is out of contract at the end of the season and the reported financial issues at the club are dire. It could be a long time until we see this club seriously challenging for a Champions League title and PSG played a large part in that. The show concludes with a discussion about whether Neymar Jr. should play in the return leg against Barcelona if he's not 100% healthy. If he does and scores a goal, should he celebrate? The knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League begins on Tuesday, February 16, for Paris Saint-Germain and as luck would have it, they face their most hated European rival–FC Barcelona. On this episode of PSG Talking, recording on Valentine's Day, I'm joined by fellow contributors Ty, James, and Guillaume, to preview the highly anticipated Round of 16 tie between PSG and Barcelona. Up first, we check in with Ty who gives us a recap of Barcelona's season so far and explains how they're just hitting their stride at the right time. He also names a few players who could cause major issues for Presnel Kimpembe, Marquinhos, and the rest of PSG's defense. Next, we discuss the impact of Neymar Jr.'s injury. Should Mauricio Pochettino have risked him mid-week against Ligue 2's Stade Malherbe Caen? How big of a blow is this to PSG as they prepare for Barcelona? We also debate PSG's best formation and lineup for the clash against Barcelona? Should Moise Kean get the start? Is Layvin Kurzawa the best option at left-back? Should Marquinhos play defensive midfielder? Tactically, should PSG go down fighting or park the bus? The show concludes with us finishing a simple sentence, "PSG will advance past Barcelona IF..." | Le Classique Win, Jordan Kit Review, and Neymar's Contract Extension | 08 Feb 2021 | 00:55:26
***Visit https://manscaped.com and use code PSGTALK to receive 20% off and free shipping*** Before the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers battled for the NFL Championship, there was the real big game between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Cosé, Guillaume, and Matt to discuss the 100th installment of Le Classique in which PSG won 2-0 thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappé and Mauro Icardi. Is the team evolving for the better under manager Mauricio Pochettino or is there still work to be done before the meeting against FC Barcelona in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League? We also discuss the potential long-term absence of Angel Di Maria who was subbed off in the first half after assisting Mbappé's goal with what appeared to be a muscle injury. If the Argentine is unable to play against Barcelona, how big of a loss is that for PSG? Next, we switch gears and discuss PSG's recently released Jordan Brand fourth kit. The bold kit gets its design from "the nebula in space, where stars are born and ties into the PSG philosophy of creating stars for the ages." We debate whether this kit is a hit or miss and what it's like seeing people wear the PSG badge as a fashion statement with likely zero knowledge of the club. Later in the show, we discuss Neymar Jr.'s contract extension with PSG that isn't official but seems to be a forgone conclusion. What does it say that a player like Neymar wants to stay in the French capital? We debate that and the recent comments made by ESPN FC's Craig Burley who basically wants Neymar to take less money to play in a more "competitive league." ***Visit https://manscaped.com and use code PSGTALK to receive 20% off and free shipping*** Things are looking up for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. We've already seen one trophy celebration and with a new manager at the helm, the squad appears to be playing more attractive and cohesive football. Is it all roses at the Parc des Princes or is there underlying causes for concern? On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by fellow contributors Cose, Guillaume, and Matt to discuss PSG's 2-1 win over Olympique de Marseille in the Trophée des Champions. What positives are we seeing from the squad under new manager, Mauricio Pochettino, and what still needs work? Do we know what his preferred starting lineup will be moving forward? Neymar made a brief appearance in that match against Marseille and in 25 minutes, he was the most fouled player on the pitch. With his feud against Álvaro González spilling over to Twitter, should the league step in to stop it or will it only add fuel to the fire of this rivalry? Later in the show, we do our best to explain the situation regarding Mediapro, television rights, and Ligue 1. What are the very real consequences facing the French league with a serious lack of cash funneling into clubs? What role should PSG play in helping prop up the league? We also give new meaning to PSG's slogan of "Dream Bigger" and debate whether or not Pochettino should play Neymar against Marseille on February 7, just one week prior to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match against FC Barcelona. | Who Will Pochettino Bring With Him to Paris? | 01 Jan 2021 | 00:43:46
As the calendar turns to 2021, Paris Saint-Germain are on the verge of a new era with the official departure of Thomas Tuchel and the expected arrival of a highly anticipated manager. On this episode of PSG Talking, which was recorded on January 1, I'm joined by long-time contributors Guillaume and Matt to discuss the managerial situation at PSG. Should fans be optimistic about Mauricio Pochettino returning to the club he once captained as a player or was sacking Tuchel premature? Is Pochettino that much better than Tuchel tactically? With Pochettino's ties to Tottenham Hotspur and the Premier League, we discuss the latest transfer rumors, which include PSG linked to Serge Aurier, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, and Wilfried Zaha. We switch topics later in the show to discuss the latest with Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappé when it comes to their contract situation. With reports that no club can afford the Frenchman, will he sign an extension or will PSG be forced to sell for below what he's worth to avoid losing him on a free transfer? The show concludes with us sharing our 2021 resolutions for PSG. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. Want more PSG? | Special Holiday Edition | 25 Dec 2020 | 01:26:22
Talk about bad timing... On Wednesday, December 23, I recorded a PSG Talking podcast with Guillaume and James and then a 1970 podcast with Marc during Paris Saint-Germain's 4-0 win over RC Strasbourg. We talked about Thomas Tuchel quite a bit but little did we know that he would be sacked the following day. For easy listening, I've combined the two podcasts into one and you get to hear us analyze the job that Tuchel has done at PSG and which PSG Talk contributors wanted him gone and others who may be disappointed to see him leave the French capital. We also discuss PSG's poor results against Lille OSC and Olympique Lyonnais, two clubs who are currently ahead of Les Parisiens in the Ligue 1 table. Contributing to those disappointing performances are injuries. From Presnel Kimpembe to Neymar Jr., many of PSG's top players are out of action and for some, it's a race against time to get them fit ahead of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie against FC Barcelona. It wouldn't be a holiday episode without asking the guys what gift they would give PSG this year and who deserves a lump of coal (don't worry, Leonardo, I've made sure you won't receive any coal this year!). | Reaction to Champions League Round of 16 Draw | 15 Dec 2020 | 00:33:26
Paris Saint-Germain rallied in the final two match days to top their UEFA Champions League group and now we know their reward, a date with their arch-nemesis FC Barcelona in the Round of 16. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Ty and James and we share our reaction to the Champions League draw that pits PSG and Barcelona against each other in the competition for the first time since 2017. Which team should be considered the favorite? The first match between the two sides is slated for February 16, so there's plenty that can change for both teams between now and then, but one major talking point is the health of Neymar Jr. The former Barcelona man went down with an ankle injury against Olympique Lyonnais last weekend and while he should be back in time for the Round of 16, will he have enough preparation ahead of the tie? The upcoming January transfer window will be an opportunity for PSG to strengthen, but what positions should the club look to upgrade? Who is available? Could PSG pull off a surprise transfer for Stade Rennais midfielder Eduardo Camavinga? It's still a bit too early to make a prediction for the PSG match, but I ask the guys what other matchups in the Round of 16 they're excited to watch. | The Bread Burns at the Entrance of the Oven | 07 Dec 2020 | 01:17:26
After a rough start to the UEFA Champions League group stage, Paris Saint-Germain now controls their destiny but plenty of questions remain as the club prepares for the business end of the season. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by fellow contributors Matt, Guillaume, and Cose, to discuss the 3-1 win over Manchester United. Did PSG play well and deserve to win, or, did the Red Devils give the game away with poor substitutions and missed goal-scoring opportunities? Next, we discuss the possibility of Lionel Messi making the move from FC Barcelona to PSG. With Neymar openly stating he wants to play with his friend and former teammate again, should the club explore ways to bring him to the French capital, including selling Kylian Mbappé? The 21-year-old Mbappé has struggled as of late in the Champions League, leading many to speculate if now is the time to cash in on the Frenchman and bring in players to compliment Neymar and potentially Messi. We debate the right way forward for the club. PSG's other celebrated winger, Angel Di Maria, is in the last year of his contract and while one of us wants him gone by the end of the week, others aren't so sure we can find a suitable replacement that works financially. We wrap up the show by answering a few questions from listeners sent in via Twitter. | Mbappé Hits Back at Paris Saint-Germain | 07 Jun 2024 | 00:31:14
Kylian Mbappé is busy preparing for the UEFA European Championship with France, but that didn't keep him from revealing some troubling revelations about Paris Saint-Germain. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Jonathan Johnson from CBS Sports to react to Mbappé's comments about his experience at PSG, the latest on Xavi Simons, the latest transfer rumors, and I get his prediction on who will win the Euros this summer. Up first, we dive into the Mbappé situation where earlier this week, he said that at the start of the season, he was told in a violent manner that he would not be playing for PSG. It wasn't until Luis Campos and Luis Enrique intervened that he was able to play. We react to Mbappé's press conference and why there is bad blood between the former PSG superstar and Nasser Al-Khelaifi. I also asked Johnson whether he thinks Mbappé colluded with Real Madrid to leave on a free transfer and whether the Frenchman will be viewed negatively for chasing a trophy that he couldn't win at PSG. We transition away from Mbappé to another player causing drama for PSG. Xavi Simons was expected to return to France following his loan at RB Leipzig, but his future remains in question, with a decision likely coming after the Euros. I asked Johnson his thoughts on where he sees the Netherlands international playing next season. The show concludes with Johnson reacting to the latest transfer news that PSG is interested in signing Julián Álvarez from Manchester City and Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. I also get his pick to win the Euros and which PSG player will have a breakout performance. | Leipzig Loss, Tuchel in Trouble, and Elevator Error Traps PSG Players | 07 Nov 2020 | 00:52:29
The meme machine has been putting in overtime with the amount of content Paris Saint-Germain has delivered the past couple of weeks. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Cose, Matt, and Guillaume to discuss the 2-1 loss to RB Leipzig and whether or not Thomas Tuchel deserves most of the blame for the lackluster performance. The defeat means PSG could potentially fall to the UEFA Europa League if they don't win their remaining UEFA Champions League matches. Is now the time to bring in a new manager or should PSG let Tuchel finish out the season and replace him next summer? Who can fix PSG's "eye cancer" of a midfield? What are the ramifications in terms of Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr. who are considering signing an extension with PSG? Also, did you know Marco Verratti is 28-years-old!? After a lengthy and very serious discussion about the issues at PSG this season, we close out the podcast with a somewhat comical story about several PSG players getting stuck in an elevator for 50 minutes before they were rescued. We go around the panel and decide which players we would like to be trapped in an elevator wall. Don't forget to designate a pee corner! Anyway...if PSG don't turn this thing around quickly I'm turning this into a Cambridge United FC blog. Get it together, guys... | Latest Injury News; Feud Brewing Between PSG and Brazil Over Neymar | 31 Oct 2020 | 00:43:02
Paris Saint-Germain has won seven of their last eight matches but things in the French capital are far from ideal. Injuries are piling up almost daily and the manager is very much on the hot seat. This season was always going to be difficult due to the ongoing pandemic, but no one expected it to be this bad. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by French football journalist Jonathan Johnson who recently joined CBS Sports to cover the UEFA Champions League and contributes to the outstanding ¡Qué Golazo! podcast where PSG is a frequent topic. The episode begins with a discussion about Johnson's recent article on injuries at PSG, the most devastating being Neymar Jr.'s muscle injury suffered against Istanbul Başakşehir. The injury will keep the PSG superstar out for the next three games and if it were up to Thomas Tuchel, he wouldn't play for Brazil during the upcoming international break either. There is already bad blood between PSG/Tuchel and Brazil from previous injuries Neymar has sustained and it will be interesting to see how this situation plays out. Up next, we discuss Tuchel's situation and whether or not he will make it through an entire season without being sacked. The offense has sputtered and while there have been quite a few injuries, there appears to be a malaise over the squad and he hasn't proven to be able to light a spark that is so desperately needed. Could Thiago Motta return to the Parc des Princes and solve PSG's issues? I also asked Johnson for his ideal starting lineup if injuries weren't an issue. Does he go with Marquinhos in midfield or center-back? Kean or Icardi? Speaking of Kean, Johnson offers some clarity to his loan deal from Everton FC. We conclude the show with a discussion about Kylian Mbappé and Neymar and whether or not they will extend their contracts with PSG and the outside factors that could determine their futures. | Manchester United Recap, Kean Breakout, Champions League Outlook | 27 Oct 2020 | 01:02:49
With a host of injuries and turmoil between the manager and sporting director, Paris Saint-Germain faces perhaps its most pivotal stretch of games of the season so far. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by James, Cose, and Guillaume to discuss PSG's two most recent results and we also look ahead to PSG's upcoming UEFA Champions League match against Istanbul Başakşehir. The show begins with a conversation about PSG's frustrating 2-1 loss to Manchester United in the first match of the Champions League group stage. The squad looked tired and devoid of ideas offensively even with Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr. on the pitch together. We discuss whether the blame rests on Thomas Tuchel's shoulders and whether his days could be numbered as manager. PSG rebounded from that defeat to United with a 4-0 win over Dijon FCO—the last place team in Ligue 1. Tuchel was forced to rotate his squad due to injuries, which included starting Moise Kean who scored his first two goals in a PSG kit. The 20-year-old has loads of potential and this performance could lead to him taking minutes away from some of the usual starters. We then discuss Wednesday match against Istanbul Başakşehir where anything other than a win could lead to Tuchel getting sacked and the very real possibility that PSG may not qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League. We go around the panel and get score predictions for this highly-anticipated match. The show concludes with a discussion about a surprising statistic. According to journalist Robin Bairner, since the start of the Qatar Sports Investments era (2011-current), PSG has conceded 18 penalties in the Champions League and only been awarded 7. Is this a case of bad defending or is there a conspiracy against the French giants? As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. | We Have 9 Midfielders and None of Them Suck | 07 Oct 2020 | 01:07:33
With so much attention being paid to Paris Saint-Germain's transfer signings, it's easy to forget that on the pitch, the reigning French champions have looked awfully impressive with four consecutive victories. On this episode of PSG Talking, I hand off hosting duties to Guillaume and he's joined by fellow long-time contributors Matt and Cose. They're essentially the Thiago Motta, Marco Verratti, and Blaise Matuidi of the podcast crew. The show begins with a discussion of the 3-0 win over OGC Nice at the Allianz Riviera. PSG dismissed Patrick Vieira's side with relative ease in what was the first time we really saw Les Parisiens play close to their potential. The conversation transitions to PSG's 2-0 win over Stade de Reims at the Parc des Princes, with a brace from Mauro Icardi, and the 6-1 win over Angers SCO, which included Alessandro Florenzi's first goal as a PSG player since arriving on loan from AS Roma. Up next, the crew discusses PSG's transfer business. There are several new faces in the French capital and some old ones still remain (Julian Draxler and Jesé to name a couple). What can supporters expect from Danilo Pereira, Rafinha, and Moise Kean? Will they be major contributors or fringe players? Regardless, it will be up to manager Thomas Tuchel to rotate his starting lineup to keep all of the players happy now that he has quality depth at nearly every position. | Champions League Hangover or Serious Issues at PSG? | 18 Sep 2020 | 00:58:33
When Paris Saint-Germain supporters look at the Ligue 1 table, they find their team in the basement of Ligue 1 in 15th place. It's hardly what was expected following the club's first appearance in the UEFA Champions League final just a few weeks ago. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by fellow contributors James and Matt to discuss PSG's disappointing start to the 2020-21 Ligue 1 season and what needs to change for the club to return to their dominating ways. The second match of the new season saw PSG welcome Olympique de Marseille in what was supposed to be a football match but instead turned into more of a rugby match with a dash of UFC thrown in at the end. Not only were several PSG players sent off, but Neymar Jr. claimed he was racially abused by a Marseille player. We discuss what should happen to Álvaro González even if it's not proven with a video that he did abuse Neymar. New signing, Alessandro Florenzi, made his debut against OM and he was one of the rare bright spots in that match. We discuss his performance and whether or not PSG needs to sign a left-back with Juan Bernat going down with a serious knee injury. Speaking of changes, one move some fans would like to see is a new coach. Thomas Tuchel did get PSG to the Champions League final but with one goal scored in the opening three matches, serious questions are being asked of the former Borussia Dortmund boss. We end the show with our expectations of the new PSG documentary that was recently released in France via Amazon Prime Video. | Bayern Munich Smash PSG's Champions League Dream | 24 Aug 2020 | 01:05:04
A season unlike any other ended on Sunday with Paris Saint-Germain falling 1-0 to FC Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final. The loss was made worse as it was former PSG player, Kingsley Coman, who scored the only goal of the match to give the Germans their sixth Champions League title in club history. On the latest PSG Talking podcast, which was recorded just minutes after the final whistle, I'm joined by fellow contributors Eddie, James, Mel, and Ty to discuss how PSG let this opportunity slip through their fingers. We start the show with initial reactions to the defeat and an examination of manager Thomas Tuchel's tactics and whether he got the starting lineup correct. Was there anything he could have done to counterbalance Bayern's relentless pressing? The panel also discusses the two penalty shouts that were not given by the referee. Was the right decision made in both instances or should Kylian Mbappé have been awarded a penalty in the second half? Speaking of PSG's French superstar, we discuss his overall performance and why he and Neymar Jr. were ineffective against Bayern's high defensive line. Looking ahead, we wonder whether major changes need to be made to the squad or if it only needs small improvements in key areas. We wrap up the show by answering a few Twitter questions and share our parting shots on what has been a historical season despite ending in disappointment. Want more PSG? | Against Bayern Munich, There Will Be Blood | 20 Aug 2020 | 00:53:46
After two anti-climatic semi-final matches in the UEFA Champions League, we finally have the heavyweight final everyone wants to see. It's Paris Saint-Germain versus FC Bayern Munich for all of the marbles. On the latest episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Guillaume and Matt to discuss PSG's win over RB Leipzig last Wednesday and we look ahead to the matchup against Bayern in the final on Sunday. Up first, I ask the crew how they felt heading into the match against Leipzig and why that match was so easy for the Ligue 1 champions. Was it the return of Angel Di Maria that made the difference or was it the defense who continued their outstanding play in the tournament? Speaking of the lineup, what changes should manager Thomas Tuchel make against Bayern Munich? We discuss potential lineup changes that could work against the German's style of play and why PSG has some extra motivation to defeat Bayern (hint: it has something to do with Juan Bernat and Tanguy Kouassi). If there's a reason to worry, it's the lack of finishing from Neymar Jr. despite playing well overall. Surely his shot won't be off for a third match, right? Also, we all agree that Keylor Navas has to return as Sergio Rico looked shaky against Leipzig. We wrap up the show by talking about the media's coverage of PSG's run to the final and answer your questions sent via Twitter. | Lady Luck is Finally on PSG's Side in the Champions League | 13 Aug 2020 | 00:51:45
The moment that Paris Saint-Germain supporters have been waiting for is finally here. The club is through to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 1995 following a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Atalanta. On the latest episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by James Teague and Eduardo Razo for a reactionary show recorded just a few hours after Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's game-winning goal in stoppage time. And before you all send me hate mail about the audio quality, I am without my fancy mic as I'm in the middle of a move and my stuff is probably somewhere in the middle of Wyoming. We start the show by talking about where we watched the match and how stressful the final minutes were. We talk about Thomas Tuchel's lineup and whether or not he got the tactics right. The story of the first 45 minutes was Neymar Jr., who was brilliant in every way possible except when it came to putting his shots on target. Neymar's misses were highlighted on social media as PSG's detractors lined up and salivated at the prospect of the most hated footballer on the planet bowing out of the Champions League to a modest club like Atalanta. We discuss the media's coverage of PSG and whether or not they will ever embrace this team. Once PSG went down a goal in the first half, some doubt started to creep in but once Kylian Mbappé entered the game in the 60th minute, things took a drastic change. We discuss his influence on the game despite playing with an injured ankle and the goal from Marquinhos that leveled the score at 1-1 at the 90-minute mark. We wrap up the show by sharing our reaction to Choupo-Moting's incredible goal in stoppage time and the fact that he will now go down in PSG history for this goal and not that famous miss he had last season. We also pick our preferred opponent in the next round. Will it be RB Leipzig or Atlético Madrid. We'll find out on Thursday. | Everything is Clicking On and Off the Pitch | 20 Jul 2020 | 01:02:49
Paris Saint-Germain recently returned to the pitch after a four-month layoff due to the coronavirus so naturally, the PSG Talking podcast crew is back to recap the first two friendly matches and discuss the latest news involving the club. Joining me on this episode, which was recorded on Friday, July 17, are fellow contributors Guillaume and Tyrone. We start the show by discussing the 7-0 win over Waasland-Beveren, which surprisingly included two incredible goals from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Other than the scoreline, we share the other positives supporters should take away from the game. Then, we talk about last week's match against Le Havre on the road. The 9-0 win over the Ligue 2 side will do little to give the naysayers a reason to believe PSG can defeat Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League but similar to the match against Waasland-Beveren, the effort level was impressive the squad appears to be linking up well and creating plenty of goal-scoring opportunities. Leaving the pitch for a moment, we break down the back-and-forth war of words between Thomas Meunier and PSG's sporting director, Leonardo, who was accused by the Belgian of giving false information to the media. Our final topics include a discussion about Manchester City and why their Champions League ban was reversed. What does it mean for PSG in the seasons to come? We also check in on Atalanta and briefly break down their recent results. The show wraps up with us answering a few questions sent in via Twitter. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. Want more PSG? | Imagine Neymar Shredding Barcelona | 08 Jul 2020 | 01:04:15
We know, we know...there hasn't been a new episode of PSG Talking for a few weeks but I promise this episode more than makes up for our absence. On this episode, I'm joined by Guillaume, James, and Matt to discuss the latest headlines and answer a few questions from listeners sent in via Twitter. We begin the show by discussing the one confirmed friendly against Le Havre on July 12, and the two rumored exhibitions against Shamrock Rovers and Celtic FC. After Matt informs me that Ireland and Scotland are in fact two different countries, the panel shares what fans can expect from the squad after going more than three months without playing a match together. Layvin Kurzawa and Edinson Cavani are the next two topics up for discussion. The Frenchman surprisingly signed a four-year contract while PSG's all-time leading scorer decided to focus on his next team and forgo an opportunity to win the UEFA Champions League. Will that decision affect Cavani's legacy with the club? Speaking of the Champions League, the draw for the quarter-finals will take place on July 10, and the guys share who they hope to see in the next round of the competition. Personally, I hope to see PSG take on Barcelona to watch Neymar torch his former team and put them out of their misery. We wrap up the show with a conversation about Neymar Jr. and the constant rumors about him going back to FC Barcelona, Tanguy Kouassi's decision to leave PSG for FC Bayern Munich, and several Twitter questions. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. Want more PSG? Paris Saint-Germain wrapped up their season with a Coupe de France victory but now must focus on convincing Xavi Simons to return to the French capital following his loan at RB Leipzig. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Justin from RBL Talk Podcast to discuss Simons and his standout season in Germany. We also dive into the latest rumors involving the Netherlands international and other players at Leipzig who could make the move to PSG this summer. First, we discuss Simons's season at Leipzig, where he scored 10 goals and recorded 15 assists in all competitions. How important was he in Marco Rose's system, and what is his best position? Next, we get into the latest rumors involving Simons. According to reports, the 21-year-old doesn't want to return to PSG following his loan and would prefer a loan to FC Barcelona, back to Leipzig, or another club. Justin shares his thoughts on the drama and predicts where Simons is likely to play next season. Benjamin Šeško is another Leipzig player who has recently been linked with a move to PSG. We discuss whether the prolific striker could be on the move this summer and if Leipzig and PSG could work out a deal involving both Šeško and Simons. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Ethan from PSG Fan Club Boise to break down PSG's 2-1 win over Olympique Lyonnais in the Coupe de France final. We also look ahead to what's needed for PSG to take the next step, reflect on Kylian Mbappé's final match, and discuss our transfer wish list. First, we dive into what we liked in PSG's win over Lyon. Ousmane Dembélé opened the scoring, and Fabian Ruiz doubled the lead in the first half. Surprisingly, both goals came off corners, which is something we haven't seen much this season. Mbappé and Bradley Barcola created plenty of chances, and the full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes joined the attack and were dangerous all match. Vitinha continued his stellar play, and we wonder if he's better than prime Marco Verratti. Of course, there were negatives as well. From Fox Sports' lack of promotion leading up to the match to the PSG and Lyon Ultras clashing before kickoff to the poor play from PSG's center-backs off of set pieces, we go into detail about what needs to be fixed going into next season. PSG closed out the season with a domestic sweep, having won the Trophée des Champions, Coupe de France, and Ligue 1. They also reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in Luis Enrique's first season in charge. We discuss the accomplishments and what it will take for PSG to take the next step under Luis Enrique. We then hand out some awards, including the most improved player of the season, the most disappointing signing, and the goal of the season. We also talk about our transfer wish list and Dembélé's performance this season, and we conclude with talking about Mbappé's final send-off. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. We’re also on Substack!
