Hablo en nombre de mi papá en este episodio en español. Antes de saltarnos en el tema de hoy, quisiera aprovechar de la oportunidad de promover mi propio podcast Ritmos Negros. Va a ser algo especial porque en ese episodio, hablamos de la comida sobre todo las influencias africanas en la cocina latina así que un tema bien parecido al tema de hoy. De todos modos, sin más preámbulos, empecemos!

En las palabras de mi papá, usar el lenguaje de la salud metabólica es algo que hago intencionalmente principalmente para socializar el término y porque la mala salud metabólica está asociada con la mayoría de las llamadas condiciones médicas crónicas que sufrimos.

Muchos han definido la mala salud metabólica como la falta de valores normales de circunferencia de cintura, triglicéridos, lipoproteína de alta densidad, presión arterial y glucosa en sangre.

La buena noticia es que la mala salud metabólica es reversible con cambios en el estilo de vida.

La mala noticia es que solo el 6.8% de la población estadounidense es metabólicamente saludable según la investigación realizada en la Universidad de Tufts.

Peor aún es que algunos grupos étnicos se ven afectados a mayor escala. Por ejemplo, la diabetes es una enfermedad metabólica y, a lo largo de su vida, los adultos estadounidenses en general tienen un 40 % de posibilidades de desarrollar diabetes tipo 2. Pero si es un adulto hispano o latino, su probabilidad es de más del 50 % y es probable que la desarrolle a una edad más temprana. Las complicaciones de la diabetes también golpean más fuerte: las personas hispanas o latinas tienen tasas más altas de insuficiencia renal causada por la diabetes, así como la pérdida de la visión y la ceguera.

Dado que el impacto no es igual, es fundamental que quienes compartan el mensaje curativo de la salud metabólica pertenezcan a comunidades que también representen a las comunidades más afectadas. Es por eso que estoy emocionado de hacer precisamente eso con la invitada de hoy.
