Poet & Artist Talk with Pratibha Savani & Karuna Mistry about their new book "Sojourn"13 Sep 202400:45:29

https://amzn.to/4cG3iAU How do you cope with losing someone you love? Sojourn: Transcending Seasons explores the journey of the soul as expressed by brother and sister, Karuna Mistry and Pratibha Savani. Together, they take the reader through their entwined paths of experiencing grief while caring for their beloved dying mother; bringing uplifting reflection, wisdom and spiritual growth. Their journey arches from a storming summer to a wintry wisp; eight chapters of revealing thoughts and valuable insights leading into how the writers overcame darkness. Containing almost 100 individually arranged poems – including prose, rhyme and visual – the creative siblings also include their own impressive artwork. Along the way, they are joined by guest poets, Jill Sharon Kimmelman, Sarfraz Ahmed, and Zaneta Varnado Johns, who offer insights from their own faith traditions. These offerings complement and consolidate the inescapable situation in facing the ultimate end. With an emotionally moving timeline, an array of contrasting conspicuous and subtle themes, this deeply thoughtful compilation combines layers of poetry and art in a unique fashion, making Sojourn an original read and a precious gift to the world. ... Pratibha Savani Pratibha Savani is a UK poet, artist and an Ambassador for the Garden of Neuro. She first began writing as a student struggling with eczema, releasing her debut book, “Tangles + Knots” in October 2020. It uniquely combines her art and writing with mindfulness and wellbeing themes and was featured in the August 2021 ‘Garden of Neuro Poetry Book Club.’ Her black and white art became the inspiration for the anthology series, “A Safe and Brave Space” by adding mindfulness colouring and has contributed towards Volumes 1 (2021), 2 (2022) and 3 (2024). Since 2021, over 65 poems and 14 art pieces have been published in over fifty literary publications including anthologies with McKinley Publishing Hub, Prolific Pulse Press LLC, Ravens Quoth Press, Open Door Poetry Magazine and Austur, to name a few. Wellbeing projects continued through ‘What Matters Journal,’ ‘Rethink Your Mind’ and other charity anthologies. Pratibha has delivered online art workshops and designed book covers. She loves the freedom to scribble in her sketchbook without lines or rules and is inspired by the cosmos, nature and spirituality. She also enjoys yoga, science fiction and creative fun with her daughter. Future projects are to create a mindfulness book, children’s book and further poetry books. Find her inventive expressions on: Instagram and Facebook: @pratibhapoetryart Karuna Mistry Following the death of his mother, Karuna Mistry suddenly woke up to poetry – quite literally. With the benefit of his sister already established in poetry circles and with her encouragement, he was easily able to find submission calls. Over his first year of creative writing, much to his surprise, he completed over 200 pieces and soon had his poetry published in various anthologies including Austur, McKinley Publishing Hub, Open Door Magazine, and Sweetycat Press. Over his first two years of identifying as a poet, Karuna has published over 60 poems in more than 40 anthologies, occasionally being paid. He has also orated his poetry at local public events. Karuna has been writing poetry continuously since his bereavement. His creative writing interests are much broader than catharsis, covering observations in nature, life, but also humour, science fiction, spirituality and thoughtful philosophy. He also enjoys writing blogs and essays, drawing, music, and watching science fiction. Additionally, he has experience in magazine editorship. Poet Talk with Linwood Jackson Jr by Lisa Tomey26 Jan 202100:35:42

Linwood Jackson Jr. is an author  and poet writing on personal devotional health. He is someone who believes in the power of the Bible's words when sincerely exercised and studied. Through his books, speeches, and discourses, he encourages to think and feel for self's growth and development,  that self-love may bloom into self-possession through the knowledge acquired from experience. This, he says, betters the personal and devotional life not only for the person, but also for all around them.

Poet's Connection with Denise Gibbon by Lisa Tomey11 Jan 202101:05:05

We had our monthly Living Poetry Poet's Connection meeting on January 9 2021 with special guest Denise Gibbon, Literary Attorney. She talked about copyright and answered several questions related to literary law and poetry protection.

From the About section of Denise Gibbons website:

"A publishing consultant as well as a licensed attorney in both California and New York, I represent and educate authors about contracts, copyright and other publishing issues.

After graduating from the University of San Francisco School of Law over twenty-five years ago, I began my legal career as a litigator in Los Angeles, California, where I worked for two large firms — Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May, and a New York based firm (hold your breath), Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker.

In the course of representing authors in California, I prepared and negotiated publishing contracts for the Los Angeles Chapter of the national mystery writers’ organization, Sisters In Crime, and wrote a legal column dubbed “The Legal Weapon” for the organization’s publication, Ransom Notes.

As an attorney in New York, I persuaded a large New York publisher not to categorize my client’s already-published true-life-non-fiction work as fiction, successfully convinced producers of a popular TV tabloid to remove libelous material about a client from a segment prior to its national broadcast date, and persuaded a prominent and reluctant publisher to terminate three publishing contracts with a successful but dissatisfied author. Prior to that, I was a volunteer-attorney for the Author’s Guild, a distinguished national organization that educates writers about their legal rights. There, I reviewed, explained and revised contracts of various kinds for numerous Guild members.

There was also life before and between the law gigs. As a reporter for a New York newspaper, I covered local news and interviewed artists such as Janis Ian, Richie Havens, and Cleo Laine for feature articles. In California, as a member of the Los Angeles Poets and Writers Collective, and tutored by the inimitable Jack Grapes, I published and edited poetry with Bombshelter Press and sang for three years with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus under the direction of Seiji Ozawa. Finally, for seventeen years, I had the presence of mind to earn a precarious and rewarding living as a professional singer in San Francisco. And between you and me, I’d do it again."

C. Reign, born TaChae Range in Harrisburg, Pa. is a poet, writer, artist, author and self-proclaimed amateur genealogist. A writer since the age of 9 and poet from the age of 13, at 16 she added amateur genealogist and family historian to her already impressive resume.
C. writes for and about people, especially Black women, who internally manifest themselves with hopelessness & feelings of worthlessness, for and about women and girls who lose themselves in relationships.

She writes about black femininity, her own family & their history via oral traditions and attempts to show the consistent similarities between mythology and reality.

C. will have her bachelor's in Professional Writing from Bridgewater College, then go on to earn her MFA in Writing.

Poet Talk with Utkarsh Saraswat by Lisa Tomey07 Jan 202100:27:39

Utkarsh is a college student studying medicine and is a writer by passion. He is well known for his free flowing relatable poems and short stories. Utkarsh was born in a town near Moradabad, India on June 27, 2000. Having passed out of school with science, he is currently studying in college. His love for literature started in his school days when he was very fond of writing speeches, essay and short stories. He was also fond of debates and song-writing (which he admits are hilariously embarrassing). This habit of song-writing later turned into his love for poetry, which he used to write as a vent to his emotions. In June 2017, after some inspiration from his family and with some help from his dad, Utkarsh announced his first book, “Melody Of Words”, which was a compilation of some of his best poems at that time and topped at 6th in poetry on Amazon.

Book Launch for Breaking Up With the Cobalt Blues by Lindsay Soberano Wilson28 Aug 202400:40:38

We celebrated the Book Launch of Breaking Up With the Cobalt Blues - Poems for Healing by Lindsay Soberano Wilson A Canadian poet, this is the latest full poetry collection by Lindsay.

Lindsay Soberano Wilson's second full-length book of poems, Breaking Up With the Cobalt Poems for Healing, finds peace in painful, messy, shameful parts of life unearthed at inconvenient times. With poems about suicide, sexual assault, addiction, intergenerational trauma, domestic violence, Toronto 90s rave culture, and a pandemic, Breaking Up With the Cobalt Blues finds light in the darkness.
The visual and lyrical poems, shed light on hard truths while inspiring readers to "Dance Through the Dark" to find "Glimmers," instead of tripping on triggers like the poem, "I Tripped on a Wound Today" about being a third-generation Holocaust survivor. As the creator of Put It To Rest, a mental health literary online hub, Lindsay believes in putting painful stories to rest by writing them out to let them Breaking Up With the Cobalt Blues weaves in and out of childhood, coming of age, and adulthood on a healing journey to put the past behind, embrace the present, and trust the future.
In the opening poem, "I Call This Trauma", the narrator discovers that untying "knots" to fix everything is fruitless, eventually turning to acceptance in "Hope, Are You There?" Breaking Up With the Cobalt Blues culminates in a heroic call to action to break up with victimhood to embrace trauma healing reflected in the beauty of the "northern lights."
Breaking Up With the Cobalt Blues takes readers on a journey from victimization to becoming self-empowered curators of life, despite the freefall from grace into everyday beauty like being open to receiving "Glimmers."
So just maybe one can never really break up with the "blues" but there's no reason why the blues can't morph into a softer hue that's part of life rather than a defining moment.
Breaking Up With the Cobalt Blues is about making peace with grief and not letting the past define you but recreating a future that accepts that pain is a part of life, allowing growth. The concluding poem "Stay Gold" is a tribute to the friends we've lost too soon, accepting that only the good die young. Order your copy: https://www.prolificpulse.com/lindsaysoberanowilson

Poet Talk with Danielle Martin by Lisa Tomey19 Nov 202000:34:20

As a Caribbean woman and mother, Danielle Martin crafts poetry with a distinct vibe and intensity innate of her experiences and culture. However, she believes we are all versions of each other. Meeting at different stages or sometimes barely touching as we slide through life's chaotic dimensions.

Writing is her solace and "Kissing Shadows: Caribbean Love Poems" is her first published Anthology of poetry.

Additionally, her work has been featured in several publications, Ariel Chart, Claudius Speaks, Free Lit Magazine, the 2016 and 2017 Poetry Marathon Anthologies and most recently the Organic Poet.

Danielle currently spends her time engaged in writing workshops and drinking copious amounts of coffee.

Her favourite mantra is... "And this too shall pass".

Look out for new work from this emerging writer, once she defeats her nemesis...procrastination.

About "Kissing Shadows" "This anthology is an intimate weaving of life and love experiences, from the pen of the Caribbean's newest addition in its long roll call of literary poets. Ms. Martin's work is new, fresh and uniquely enticing like the rhythmic ebb and flow of ocean waves under a luscious full moon. She draws you into a tapestry of raw emotion that stretches from the shadows of youth to womanhood. From the euphoria of first love to loss and grief, she takes us further still into the depths of self discovery, wading through the choppy waters of life. Until we miraculously resurface, though gasping for air, soaked in salty tears, still awed by the wonder of being alive."

Poet Talk with Chyrel J. Jackson by Lisa Tomey 03 Nov 202000:34:04

This podcast includes and interview with CHYREL J. JACKSON but features both Jackson and her sister LYRIS WALLACE

Chyrel J. Jackson and Lyris D. Wallace are avid lovers, readers and writers of African American Literature. They grew up in a Southern Suburb of Chicago, IL. Country Club Hills. As young girls they read Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and Judy Blume novels. College was the real scholastic awakening introducing these two Literary Enthusiasts to the Literary works of their great ancestors: James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni and Sonia Sanchez. These writers influenced Chyrel and Lyris. It only makes sense that they would now be writing in the Spirit of these ancestors. Giving a voice to social issues that plague our modern time.

Their latest self-published work a book of poetry is Different Sides of the Same Coin. It is a modern collage of poetry as experienced from the Black female perspective of 2 sisters and authors. This collection of poems is refreshing and unique. It is a heartwarming work of new age black voice and spoken word. This adaptation highlights the human experience of life, love, loss, parting and sorrow. Timeless wording, honestly written with a little of the unexpected. Black Expression has never been more relevant and real. This work is an interesting twist on Harlem Renaissance revisited as it collides with 2020 social struggles of our current time. In no short order we are reminded of why written and spoken word is so vital to the sustenance of African American Literature.

They have written for much of their adult lives. Political Opinion Editorials, Book Reviews, Romance Novels, Television Show Treatments, Journaling, and Poetry are what these sisters enjoy writing best. When asked why they write? Their answer, they write for visibility. They want to be a voice for all those who feel they have something of value to say but aren’t capable of putting it in their own words.

Words surpass life, love and loss. Writers are born when life intersects with time and chance. You will always find them doing what they love reading, and writing. Writing, and telling stories is how they fulfill their divine purpose. You can’t ignore what is so visible and undeniable. Writing saved us at our lowest points in living. We hope to provide healing through our writing. We want to uplift others through their pain as writing has uplifted us and provided great healing in time of profound despair and hurt. Throughout the passage of time words remain.

Episode 12 - Poet's Connection - What it is to be a Woman25 Oct 202001:06:00

A poetry reading with contributors to Arlene Bice's anthology. "An anthology of women on fire! A collection of women coming from all directions of life, aflame to reveal who they are and how they came to be today’s woman! Women’s stories aired for the first time, in print, defiantly, daring you to challenge their choices in life whether they continue a contented life at home tending a happy family or strike out into the wilderness. The modern women of today lived more widely divergent lives than history has shown before. We are living longer with more freedom and taken advantage of a freedom to change oppressive lives to ones that blossomed us into beauties."
