Zaneta Varnado Johns is the author of Poetic Forecast: Reflections on Life's Promises, Storms, and Triumphs. She is also a contributing author in the upcoming Voices of the 21st Century: Resilient Women Who Rise and Make a Difference, scheduled for publication in February, 2021. Believing that every word shared is an opportunity to love, Zaneta began writing poetry as a freshmen in college. We had our monthly Living Poetry Poet's Connection meeting on January 9 2021 with special guest Denise Gibbon, Literary Attorney. She talked about copyright and answered several questions related to literary law and poetry protection.

"A publishing consultant as well as a licensed attorney in both California and New York, I represent and educate authors about contracts, copyright and other publishing issues.

After graduating from the University of San Francisco School of Law over twenty-five years ago, I began my legal career as a litigator in Los Angeles, California, where I worked for two large firms — Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May, and a New York based firm (hold your breath), Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker.

In the course of representing authors in California, I prepared and negotiated publishing contracts for the Los Angeles Chapter of the national mystery writers’ organization, Sisters In Crime, and wrote a legal column dubbed “The Legal Weapon” for the organization’s publication, Ransom Notes.

As an attorney in New York, I persuaded a large New York publisher not to categorize my client’s already-published true-life-non-fiction work as fiction, successfully convinced producers of a popular TV tabloid to remove libelous material about a client from a segment prior to its national broadcast date, and persuaded a prominent and reluctant publisher to terminate three publishing contracts with a successful but dissatisfied author. Prior to that, I was a volunteer-attorney for the Author’s Guild, a distinguished national organization that educates writers about their legal rights. There, I reviewed, explained and revised contracts of various kinds for numerous Guild members.

There was also life before and between the law gigs. As a reporter for a New York newspaper, I covered local news and interviewed artists such as Janis Ian, Richie Havens, and Cleo Laine for feature articles. In California, as a member of the Los Angeles Poets and Writers Collective, and tutored by the inimitable Jack Grapes, I published and edited poetry with Bombshelter Press and sang for three years with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus under the direction of Seiji Ozawa. Finally, for seventeen years, I had the presence of mind to earn a precarious and rewarding living as a professional singer in San Francisco. And between you and me, I’d do it again."

C. Reign, born TaChae Range in Harrisburg, Pa. is a poet, writer, artist, author and self-proclaimed amateur genealogist. She researches her family and combines the knowledge with oral traditions she heard growing up, along with the mythology of reality to write literature about her family. A writer since the age of 9 and poet from the age of 13, at 16 she added amateur genealogist and family historian to her already impressive resume. 
C. writes for and about people, especially Black women, who internally manifest themselves with hopelessness & feelings of worthlessness, for and about women and girls who lose themselves in relationships.

She writes about black femininity, her own family & their history via oral traditions and attempts to show the consistent similarities between mythology and reality.

C. will have her bachelor's in Professional Writing from Bridgewater College, then go on to earn her MFA in Writing.

Utkarsh is a college student studying medicine and is a writer by passion. He is well known for his free flowing relatable poems and short stories. Utkarsh was born in a town near Moradabad, India on June 27, 2000. Having passed out of school with science, he is currently studying in college. His love for literature started in his school days when he was very fond of writing speeches, essay and short stories. He was also fond of debates and song-writing (which he admits are hilariously embarrassing). This habit of song-writing later turned into his love for poetry, which he used to write as a vent to his emotions. In June 2017, after some inspiration from his family and with some help from his dad, Utkarsh announced his first book, “Melody Of Words”, which was a compilation of some of his best poems at that time and topped at 6th in poetry on Amazon.

Maggie Chalifoux studied art and psychology at VCU and then had a career in the computer field. She has been a multimedia artist now for many years, showing her work and winning awards. Annette (Wengert) Tarpley hails from the United States, originally from Iowa, now resides in Virginia. She works as a nurse practitioner by day and poet by night, which she recently rekindled and has been writing with fervor. New to the online Facebook poetry community, in short span has received numerous accolades and awards including: Featured poet, Poem of the day, Poem of the month and several poems published on online poetry sites. She has published her book of poetry, “Poetry Potpourri,” which is available on Amazon and Barnes & Nobles, comprised of a variety of over 110 poems. Lisa Tomey has been a writer of poetry for several years, but it has been in the past 20 years when she has focused on developing her work. Starting the Tri-Write-Club online, she reached out to poets to offer their works for critique in exchange for critique, as admission to the group. This was all done anonymously. Lisa will share about this group and about what has happened since. 

Reading from her chapbook "Heart Sounds" Lisa will share some of her "Tiny Poems" told in 14 words, from the 14 Words for Love project and some of her other poetry from this book.

MARCELLA REMUND is a native of Omaha, Nebraska, and a South Dakota transplant, where she teaches at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. She also serves as Faculty Advisor for the University’s only creative writing & literary student organization, the Vermillion Literary Project (VLP).
