Michelle Coltrane and Maggie LePique discuss her Mother, Alice Coltrane and the year-long celebration currently underway that’s being called “The Year of Alice.” This celebration spans 2024-2025 and features previously unreleased music and reissues, brand new community programming, a multimedia museum exhibit, specially curated concerts, newly choreographed ballet works and much more. Jazz musician, composer, bandleader and spiritual and devotional leader, Alice Coltrane was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1937 to Solon and Annie McLeod, the fifth of six children. By the age of nine, she played organ during services at Mount Olive Baptist church. In the early 60’s she began playing jazz as a professional in Detroit with her own trio and as a duo with vibist Terry Pollard. Alice Coltrane would go on to collaborate and performed with Kenny Clarke, Kenny Burrell, Ornette Coleman, Pharaoh Sanders, Charlie Haden, Roy Haynes, Jack DeJonette, Carlos Santana and more. Mrs Coltrane’s interest in gospel, classical, and jazz music led to the creation of her own innovative style. Her proficiency on keyboard, organ, and harp was remarkable and her artistry matured into amazing arrangements and compositions. Her twenty recordings cover a time span from Monastic Trio (1968) to Translinear Light (2004).
Michelle discusses at length one of the events here in Southern California that is part of the Year of Alice. Here in L.A. the exhibition Alice Coltrane, Monument Eternal at the Hammer Museum in Westwood is inspired by the life and legacy of jazz musician, composer and bandleader as well a spiritual and devotional leader, Alice Coltrane.
This exhibition is part of a larger initiative called “The Year of Alice," and in partnership with the John & Alice Coltrane Home, Impulse Records, The New York Historical Society, the Detroit Jazz Festival and more.
The exhibition presents works by contemporary American artists paired with items Coltrane’s personal archive and features a range of mediums including video, performance, and sculpture together with Coltrane’s archival hand-written correspondence, unreleased audio recordings, and rarely seen video footage.

The sonically innovative harpist, Brandee Younger, is revolutionizing harp for the digital era. Over the past fifteen years, she has worked relentlessly to stretch boundaries and limitations for harpists. In 2022, she made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for a Grammy® Award for Best Instrumental Composition. That same year, she was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award and later, the winner of the 2024 NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Jazz Album for her latest album Brand New Life. Ever-expanding as an artist, she has worked with cultural icons including Common, Lauryn Hill, John Legend, Pharoah Sanders and Christian McBride. Her original composition “Hortense” was featured in the Netflix Concert-Documentary, Beyoncé: Homecoming and in 2019, Brandee was selected to perform her original music as a featured performer for Quincy Jones and Steve McQueens’ “Soundtrack of America”. Brandee is often noted for standing on the shoulders of the very women who ushered in the harp as a clear and distinct voice in jazz & popular styles - particularly Detroit natives Dorothy Ashby & Alice Coltrane. Her new album, Brand New Life, builds on her already rich oeuvre, and cements the harp’s place in pop culture. As the title of the album suggests, Brand New Life is about forging new paths–artistic, personal, political, and spiritual. Younger's music is imbued with a sense of purpose and respect of legacy, creating a larger platform for the harp to reach newer and wider audiences than ever before. In addition to teaching at Steinhardt, Younger holds leadership positions as a board member of The Coltrane Home and New Music USA. Lila Downs is one of the most influential artists in Latin America. She has one of the most unique voices in the world and is known for her charismatic performances. His own compositions combine genres and rhythms as diverse as Mexican rancheras and corridos, boleros, jazz standards, hip-hop, cumbia and popular American music. Frequently her lyrics focus on justice, immigration and women’s problems.
She grew up in both Minnesota and Oaxaca, Mexico, her mother is from the Mixtec indigenous group and her father was Scottish-American. Lila sings in Spanish, English and several native American languages such as Zapotec, Mixtec, Nahuatl, Mayan and Purepecha.
She has recorded duets with artists as diverse as Mercedes Sosa, Caetano Veloso, Juanes, Nora Jones, Juan Gabriel, Carla Morison, Natalia LaFourcade, Santana , The boss, Nina Pastori, Soledad, Diego La Cigala, Aida Cuevas, Toto La Momposina, and Bunbury. Chavela Vargas “named” Lila as her “successor.”
She has been invited to sing with symphonies such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony and the UNAM Symphony in Mexico, as well as with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He has given concerts at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Hollywood Bowl and the National Auditorium in Mexico City. She was invited by Barack Obama to sing in the White House, and acted in the Oscars for her participation in the film Frida. Lila has recorded nine studio albums.
She has been nominated for nine Grammy awards and has won six. Maggie & Lila discuss her first appearance at the infamous Monterey Jazz Festival and her amazing performance + members of her current band.

The John & Alice Coltrane Home and the Coltrane Family, in partnership with Impulse! Records, Detroit Jazz Festival, Hammer Museum, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, The New York Historical Society, and many more, have declared 2024-2025 to be THE YEAR OF ALICE, celebrating the extensive life work of spiritual leader, composer, and musician Alice Coltrane.
In addition to being an iconic and remarkably prolific musician, Mrs. Coltrane was a beloved and wise spiritual leader, a pragmatic person with a keen eye for business, and a deeply giving human, who emphasized the importance of charitable giving, education, and spiritual guidance.
My guest today, Michelle Coltrane, is a jazz vocalist and composer. She was born in Paris, France and was raised primarily in Long Island, New York by her mother, musician Alice Coltrane, and her step-father, saxophonist John Coltrane.
Michelle has performed and collaborated with artists such as Scott Hiltzik, Shea Welsh, Kenny Kirkland, Jeff Watts, Ronnie Laws, Billy Childs, Jack DeJohnette, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Reggie Workman, The Gap Band, McCoy Tyner and her brother Ravi Coltrane.
Michelle has performed internationally with the Sai Anantam Ashram Singers presenting the music of Alice Coltrane.
Her second album, Awakening, was released in 2017 and featured sung versions of her father, John Coltrane's, songs.
Michelle of course co-hosted the “Straight No Chaser” radio program with me here on KPFK in Los Angeles and she is chief creative officer of the John Coltrane Home, a non-profit organization. September Events

Don Randi is a keyboard player, bandleader, longtime nightclub owner (no easy feat in L.A.) and a veteran of one of the most prolific and successful group of Los Angeles studio session musicians known as The Wrecking Crew. He began his career as a professional pianist and keyboard player in 1956, gradually establishing a reputation as a leading session musician. In the early 1960s, he was a major contributor, as musician and arranger, to producer Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound". He also played piano on "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," by Nancy Sinatra, and The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations". He's played on over three hundred hit records, working with musicians such as The Ronettes, Darlene Love, Linda Ronstadt, Quincy Jones, Cannonball Adderley, Herb Alpert, Neil Diamond, The Jackson 5, James Brown, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Zappa and many, many more!
He appeared on, and wrote for, many motion picture and television soundtracks, commercials and pop albums during the 1960s and 1970s. He also recorded albums of piano jazz music under his own name and as the leader of a trio with Leroy Vinnegar and Mel Lewis. These included Feelin' Like Blues (1960), Where Do We Go From Here (1962), Last Night (1963), and Love Theme From "Romeo And Juliet" (1968).
In 1970, he opened the Baked Potato Jazz Club, and formed his own group, Don Randi and Quest, as the house band. The band have subsequently recorded over 15 albums and were nominated for a Grammy in 1980 for the album New Baby.
In 2008, as a member of the "Wrecking Crew", Randi was inducted into the Hollywood RockWalk.

Experience Hendrix & Legacy Recordings released Jimi Hendrix Experience: Hollywood Bowl August 18, 1967. This live concert performance was captured just five days before the US release of Are You Experienced, their album debut. Amazingly, not a single second of this two-track live recording has ever been released before in any capacity, either via official channels or otherwise.
During their set, The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Jimi Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, Noel Redding) blazed through originals such as “Purple Haze,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” and yet-to-be-released classics “Foxey Lady” and “Fire,” as well as their own re-imagining of favorites Bob Dylan (“Like a Rolling Stone”), The Troggs (“Wild Thing”) and Muddy Waters (“Catfish Blues”). Having already conquered the band’s UK base as well as Continental Europe over the previous ten months, the vast majority of the 17,000 plus Los Angeles concert goers were there to see headliners The Mamas & The Papas and were caught off guard by Jimi Hendrix’s electrifying musicality and showmanship.

The Doors were a few months away from stardom in March 1967 when they played five sparsely attended shows at a small club in San Francisco called The Matrix. These uninhibited performances would have been fleeting if not for Peter Abram, who co-owned the pizza parlor-turned-nightclub with Jefferson Airplane founder Marty Balin. An avid recordist, Abram taped concerts at The Matrix regularly and his recordings of The Doors, made between March 7-11, 1967, spawned one of the band’s most storied bootlegs. At long last, all known Matrix recordings, sourced entirely from Abram’s original master recordings, will be released on September 8.
Bootlegs of The Matrix shows have circulated among fans for years and were popular despite the poor audio quality of most copies. The sound began improving in 1997 when the first two songs from The Matrix shows were officially released on The Doors: Box Set. Even more performances followed in 2008 on Live at the Matrix 1967; regrettably, it was discovered soon after that all the recordings were sourced from third-generation tapes, not the originals.
Today, Abram’s original recordings have been remastered by Bruce Botnick, The Doors’ longtime engineer/mixer, for official release. The vinyl version of LIVE AT THE MATRIX 1967: THE ORIGINAL MASTERS includes all 37 songs from the shows sourced from the master tapes. Except for 15 songs released in 2017 and 2018 as Record Store Day exclusives, most of the newly upgraded live recordings are making their debut in the collection, including eight that have never been featured on any of the previous Matrix releases.
It’s easy to understand the enduring appeal of these vintage performances by Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore. Recorded only a few months before “Light My Fire” propelled the band to worldwide success, the tapes capture The Doors playing a wide range of songs, including several from their self-titled debut, like “Break On Through,” “Soul Kitchen,” and “The End.” They also performed half the songs destined for the group’s soon-to-be-recorded second album, Strange Days, including early performances of “Moonlight Drive” and “People Are Strange.” 15 Sets of music over five nights at The Matrix gave the band time to indulge its love of the blues with extended covers of “I’m A King Bee” and “Crawling King Snake.” The Doors even delivered an instrumental version of “Summertime.”
These special moments all contribute to making Live at The Matrix, 1967all the more fascinating and important, as it showcases The Doors as the nascent struggling young band they were. Let’s get deeper inside this box set’s music, shall we?

Maggie discusses in depth, the release of Charlie Parker's "Bird in Kansas City" with Chuck Haddix, curator, Director of the Marr Sound Archives in Kansas City and Charlie Parker Biographer. Charlie Parker had a complicated relationship with his hometown of Kansas City, MO owing both to its history of racial segregation and to his strong ties to his family and friends there. This new set of rare recordings dating from between 1941-1951—most of them never having been heard before and some never even having been known to exist—chronicle Bird’s evolution from a blossoming soloist with the Jay McShann Band into a brilliant improviser who dominated the jazz landscape for decades to come. In addition to two unreleased 78s with the McShann band, this set offers two sets of private recordings (at the home of Bird’s friend Phil Baxter and at Vic Damon’s studio) made with local musicians and a very relaxed-sounding Parker who has the room to really stretch out and show us the shape of jazz that was to come in his wake. This recording provides a fascinating look into Parker's development.

Maggie speaks with Grammy-winning music historian, journalist, producer, and educator Ashley Kahn about Evenings At The Village Gate: John Coltrane With Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. In 1961, the John Coltrane Quintet played an engagement at the legendary Village Gate in Greenwich Village, New York. Coltrane’s Classic Quartet was not as fully established as it would soon become and there was a meteoric fifth member of Coltrane’s group those nights— visionary multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy. Ninety minutes of never-before-heard music from this group were recently discovered at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, offering a glimpse into a powerful musical partnership that ended much too soon. In addition to some well-known Coltrane material (“My Favorite Things”, “Impressions”, “Greensleeves”), there is a breathtaking feature for Dolphy’s bass clarinet on “When Lights Are Low” and the only known non-studio recording of Coltrane’s composition “Africa”, from the Africa/Brass album. This recording represents a very special moment in John Coltrane's journey—the summer of 1961—when his signature, ecstatic live sound, commonly associated his Classic Quartet of '62 to '65, was first maturing and when he was drawing inspiration from deep, African sources— and experimenting with the two-bass idea both in the studio (Olé) and on stage. This truly rare recording of "Africa" captures his expansive vision at the time.
Ashley Kahn is a Grammy-winning American music historian, journalist, producer, and professor. He teaches at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music, and has written books on two legendary recordings—Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and A Love Supreme by John Coltrane—as well as one book on a legendary record label: The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records. He also co-authored the Carlos Santana autobiography The Universal Tone, and edited Rolling Stone: The Seventies, a 70-essay overview of that pivotal decade. Joey De Leon is a percussionist, educator and producer who's performed or recorded with artists of almost every genre from jazz to Latin, pop to contemporary classical and film scores. The long list of artists he's worked with include Queen Latifah, Al Jarreau, Jennifer Lopez, Bette Midler, Cyndi Lauper, Poncho Sanchez, Arturo Sandoval and Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band.
Joey DeLeon was born in the Hell's Kitchen section of New York City, holds a bachelor’s degree from the prestigious Manhattan school of music and is currently a faculty member at Cal Arts here in Sothern California.
Eddie Resto is a bassist whose credits are just as astoundingly diverse as Joey DeLeon's. Eddie's resume includes his work with Tony Bennett, Rita Moreno, Sonny Stitt, Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Paul Simon, Kenny Burrell, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Carlos Santana, Jaco Pastorius, Dexter Gordon, Max Roach, Eddie Palmieri and Joni Mitchell.
Eddie holds a master’s degree in Afro-Latin music from California State University of Los Angeles and serves his communities through his work with the Mancini Institute, The Urban League, The Boys and Girls Club of America and other youth organizations.

Dale Bell, has spent his professional life in the arts, television and film. His awards include the Academy Award (Woodstock), the Peabody Award (Kennedy Center Tonight), two Emmys, four BAFTAs, and two Christophers. His work―performance, dramatic, documentary, commercials and industrials―has been seen globally, primarily on public television and NBC, ABC, A&E, Discovery, History, The Learning Channel, TBS, and others. In 1999, he joined Harry Wiland to create the Media & Policy Center, where together, they have earned the Ashoka and the Purpose Prize Fellowships while producing social justice multi-media initiatives for PBS on such topics as health care, eldercare, sustainable pioneers, healthy schools and communities, and now, Opioids, the VW scandal, and Our Kids with Professor Robert Putnam. They have also been professors of a two-year graduate course at Woodbury University in Burbank that focuses on leveraging media for greater social justice.

Fly Compton Aeronautical Education Foundation, Inc. is a 501c3 organization founded in 2020 by a group of African American professional pilots and aircraft mechanics that all had a common goal... to give back to and invest in the youth of our community. Concurrently, we are contributing to the diversification of an industry that has been long been exclusive to individuals of a higher economic status.
As of 2018, people of color only make up 2.3% of all aircraft pilots and flight engineers. There are 3 main things that contribute to this troubling statistic:
1. Lack of exposure
2. Access to Resources
3. High Cost of Flight training
Our mission is to introduce minority youth to the aviation industry and all of the many opportunities that it affords them. We will accomplish this by providing them with programs and resources designed to serve as a catalyst for their venture into an industry that is not traditionally accessible to individuals of a lower socio-economic status.

Maggie speaks extensively with Film historian, educator and author Donald Bogle is one of the foremost authorities on African Americans in the movies. With a series of provocative, culturally significant books, Bogle almost single-handedly pioneered the study, appreciation, and value of the work and achievements--as well as the heroic struggles--of Black artists working in films.
With his very first book, Donald Bogle won the Theatre Library Association Award for Film. That book, now in its 5th expanded, updated edition, it is considered a classic study of Black movie images in America and is used in courses at colleges and universities around the country.
Mr. Bogle has also appeared as a commentator on television, including Henry Louis Gates’s Peabody award-winning PBS series The African-Americans: Many Rivers to Cross.
He also has a long association with Turner Classic Movies and, in his recent book "Hollywood Black: The Stars, The Films, The Filmmakers" (which is a Turner Classic Movies film book) he has continued his pioneering examination of African American film history.
Turner Classic Movies pays tribute to our late host, Robert Osborne, with the Robert Osborne Award, presented annually at the TCM Classic Film Festival to an individual whose work has helped preserve the cultural heritage of classic film for future generations. In 2023, TCM honors film historian, author, and professor Donald Bogle for his pioneering studies of African American cinema and his tireless efforts to elevate the achievements of Black performers and filmmakers.

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s contributions to the history of art and his explorations of multifaceted cultural phenomena––including music, the Black experience, pop culture, Black American sports figures, literature, and other sources––will be showcased through immersive environments providing unique insight into the late artist’s creative life and his singular voice that propelled a social and cultural narrative that continues to this day.
Organized and curated by the family of Jean-Michel Basquiat, this exhibition of over 200 never-before-seen and rarely shown paintings, drawings, multimedia presentations, ephemera, and artifacts tell the story of Jean-Michel from an intimate perspective, intertwining his artistic endeavors with his personal life, influences, and the times in which he lived.
My guest is Ileen Sheppard Gallagher has been helping organizations tell their stories for thirty years. She began as a young curator at the De Young Museum in San Francisco before going on to assume top curatorial posts at the Queens Museum of Art in New York, the Library of Congress in Washington DC, and the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota. For five years before establishing her own company, she served as Director of Exhibitions for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. There she guided all aspects of the inaugural galleries leading up to and following the public opening. Ileen taught exhibition planning and design for over 20 years at New York University in the graduate Museum Studies Program. Today, she heads ISG Productions.

In this episode we celebrate the incredible musical legacy of saxophonist, composer and bandleader Wayne Shorter, born August 25, 1933 in Newark New Jersey and passed away March 2, 2023. My special guest is Alex Acuña, a prolific drummer, percussionist, composer, and bandleader who has amassed more 900 recording credits. (its probably more now) After touring with Perez Prado during the 1960s and playing with Elvis Presley in Las Vegas in the early '70s -
In 1974, Acuña and his family moved to Las Vegas. He continued working with Prado's show band, and played for Elvis Presley's Las Vegas residencies in addition to serving in backing bands and orchestras for Olivia Newton John and the Temptations. Drummer/percussionist Don Alias heard him with the latter and suggested he try playing jazz. Alias arranged an audition with Weather Report and Acuña joined that band for their 1975 tour.
He moved to Los Angeles and played on the band's two most successful studio outings, Black Market and Heavy Weather, and he toured with the group until 1978. During his tenure, Weather Report backed Joni Mitchell on Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. He has been a recording and touring sideman to a dazzling array of artists ranging from Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell to Andre Crouch and Blondie.The stellar & diverse list of artists Alex has worked with seems never ending, the word prolific is an understatement.
Wayne Shorter was a saxophonist, bandleader and composer. His compositions became jazz standards and he received worldwide recognition and critical praise. Wayne Shorter won 12 Grammy Awards. His mastery of the soprano saxophone earned him (beginning in 1970) Down Beat's annual poll-winner on that instrument… winning the critics' poll for 10 consecutive years and the readers' poll for 18 years.
The New York Times music critic Ben Ratliff described Shorter in 2008 as "probably jazz's greatest living small-group composer and a contender for greatest living improviser". Via Wayne Shorter, We Love You!

This film will give the viewer an insightful historical perspective of how global influences shaped, and continue to shape, a musical quilt that formed the music of this extraordinary city. Influences came from many places: Cuba, South America, Africa, Europe, Canada, America. All contributed to the blending and shaping of a musical genre that is rich in culture and heritage. We, as Americans, are the conservators of this unique cultural phenomenon.
The film will highlight 20 to 25 new songs, combining multiple generations of New Orleans musicians. Legacy musicians will collaborate with stars of today and students from the Tipitina’s foundation, under the guidance and tutelage of Donald Harrison.
This film shows that New Orleans music has always been a collaboration of intergenerational, interracial, intercontinental and genderless effort.
New Orleans music includes the creation and influences of American jazz and jazz musicians and the introduction of unique instruments, story songs and life’s hardships from around the world.
Award winning filmmaker/director/producer/musician Martin Shore started his career as a musician. Mr. Shore has toured with Bo Diddley, Albert Collins, Bluesman Willie, and many others. He has produced soundtracks and has acted as music supervisor for a number of feature films, including Saw, Saw II, Rize, and Rock School, among others. He has been a music producer for a variety of artists, including Snoop Dogg, G-Eazy, Yo Gotti, Mavis Staples, Booker T. Jones, North Mississippi Allstars, and many others.

Maggie speaks with Zev Feldman, an internationally recognized, independent record producer and the Co-President of Resonance Records. He is also a consulting producer of archival and historical recordings for Blue Note Records. Over the last 25 years he has worked for PolyGram, Universal Music Group, Rhino/Warner Music Group, Concord Music Group, among others. He won DownBeat Magazine's International Critics Poll for "Rising Star Producer" in 2016 for his work on a staggering 26 historical jazz recordings that year and was called "The Indiana Jones of Jazz" by Stereophile Magazine. In addition to his lauded work at Resonance, where he works closely with the estates of jazz icons such as Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery and so much more.
Maggie and Zev discuss B.B. King In France: Live at the Nancy Jazz Pulsations Festival (1977) is a previously unissued live recording from the legendary bluesman B.B. King captured by the ORTF in France on October 7, 1977 and released on producer Zev Feldman's Deep Digs label in partnership with Elemental Music and INA France. The limited-edition 180g 2 x LP set was mastered and cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, and include rare photos by Thierry Trombert, Val Wilmer, Jan Persson and more; plus liner notes by the acclaimed french author Jean Buzeline; and testimonials from fellow blues icons who knew or were inspired by B.B. King.
Also joining Zev & Maggie is Cary Baker, a writer based in Southern California but, born on Chicago’s South Side, he not only had the chance to grow up with the blues but began his writing career at age 16 for the Chicago Reader. Mr. Baker is the author of “Down On The Corner: Adventures in Busking and Street Music.” His return to writing follows a 42-year hiatus during which he directed publicity for six record labels and two of his own companies. Prior to his PR years, Baker wrote for, among others, Creem, Trouser Press, Bomp!, Goldmine, Billboard, Mix, and Record magazine. He has also written liner notes for historical reissues from labels including Universal and Capitol-EMI. Cary Baker has also been a voting member of the Recording Academy since 1979.

Jim Messina Speaks With Maggie LePique About His Prolific Career And Musical Partnership With Kenny Loggins

An undisputed expert in the fine art of making hit music, JIM MESSINA’s legacy of musical genius spans five decades, three super groups, a vibrant solo career and scores of producing and engineering credits.
While acting as producer/audio engineer for Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Buffalo Springfield, Messina ultimately joined the band as its bass player. When “the Springfield” disbanded in 1968, Jim and fellow bandmate Richie Furay formed Poco. With Jim on lead guitar, Poco defined a new musical genre, Country Rock.
After three successful albums, Jim was ready for a change and left to return to his passion for producing music. He signed as an independent producer with Columbia Records.
In November 1970, Columbia asked Jim to work with an unknown Kenny Loggins. While helping Kenny get ready for a record and touring, the two discovered that they worked well together and Jim agreed to sit in on Kenny’s first album. Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin’ Inwas released in November of 1971 and an accidental duo was formed.
Over the next seven years, Loggins & Messina released eight hit albums, had scores of hit songs and sold over 16 million albums. They had become one of rock’s most successful recording duos ever, but it was time for the duo to go their separate ways.
After a series of celebrated solo acoustic tours, Jim formed a band made of acclaimed musicians who have played with him at various points in his career. His latest release, In the Groove, includes selected hits from all three of Jim’s previous bands, as well as several of his solo works.
Touring the country and playing sold-out shows, Jim says that he’s enjoying discovering who he is, where he’s been and, most significantly, where he’s going.
It was 50 years ago when Loggins & Messina played the Hollywood Bowl supporting their debut album Sittin' In. Now, the duo reunites (July 15 & 16 2022) for a special weekend celebrating the golden sound of the ‘70s with songs like "Danny's Song" and "House at Pooh Corner.” Kenny Loggins closes the show with his greatest hits, such as “Footloose” and “Danger Zone.” A historic night under the stars!

Maggie LePique speaks with Sinatra Archivist, Charlie Pignone about the re-release of Watertown, a 1970 concept album, newly mixed and remastered from the original Sessions tapes. Upon Watertown’s release, fans and critics alike simply weren’t prepared for such a radical stylistic departure from Sinatra. But the album has shown resilience: Despite the initial lukewarm response, in the decades since the album has had a re-evaluation and, in 2007, The Guardian declared Watertown “one of [Sinatra’s] greatest masterpieces” and in 2015, The Observer noted that “it made some sense that Sinatra would attempt a story-driven concept album, considering he had helped pioneer the thematic concept LP in the 1950s. But on Watertown, Sinatra did something truly risky: he told an entire album-length story from the point of view of [a] character that is most definitely not Frank Sinatra.” Gaudio’s essay explains that Sinatra, with a level of empathy only he could achieve, was “reaching down into a man’s soul and feeling his pain and still finding hopeThe legacy of Frank Sinatra – one of the world’s most enduring singers – includes a studio album no one anticipated:
Watertown. Recorded in 1969 and released in 1970, the concept of Watertown unfolds as a personal tragedy about a working man with children whose wife suddenly leaves him. Sinatra’s performance elicits sadness, defeat and forlornness. Ultimately, as Sinatra so wonderfully expresses, it’s also a story about one man’s resilience.
On June 3, Frank Sinatra Enterprises and UMe present Watertown, newly mixed and remastered from the original Reprise session tapes resulting in superior sound quality. The original album sequence will be available on vinyl, while the CD and digital editions will feature eight bonus tracks, including alternate takes from the recording sessions, two radio ads and “Lady Day,” which was not part of the Watertown concept. Charles Pignone produced the updated edition from the new mixes created by longtime Sinatra engineer Larry Walsh – the team behind recent FSE/UMe releases Sings for Only the Lonely and Nice ‘N’ Easy.
Now appreciated as a masterpiece of drama and heartbreak, Watertown will also feature, in addition to a recreation of the original packaging, new liner notes, a track-by-track breakdown from songwriter and album producer Bob Gaudio, quotes from Sinatra, plus essays by Frankie Valli, co-writer Jake Holmes, among others who were involved in the original project.

Maggie LePique speaks with celebrating author, and educator Ashley Khan about the enduring legacy of George Harrison, a British guitarist, singer, songwriter and film producer. As a member of the Beatles, he achieved international fame and renown. During his career, he developed as a songwriter in his own right and wrote many best selling songs. In addition to music, Harrison was interested in Hindu spirituality and was a devotee of the Hare Krishna movement. George also founded the Material World Charitable Foundation, or MWF, on 26 April 1973, close to two years after he had organised the Concert for Bangladesh in New York as a benefit for refugees of the Bangladesh Liberation War. MWF is still active and Olivia Harrison (George's widow) is Director of the Charitable Organization.
My guest Ashley Kahn, is a Grammy-winning author, educator, music journalist, and concert producer. His books include A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane’s Signature Album and Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece. He teaches at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music.
