Tom Schwab is known as the father of Podcast Interview Marketing. Beyond just

podcast guesting, he saw in 2013 how targeted podcast interviews could drive

an inbound marketing machine. He has appeared on over 1,500 interviews and

his company, Interview Valet, has served over one thousand leading brands,

consultant, and non-fiction authors on over fifty thousand interviews since 2015.

Tom is an author, speaker, and teacher. His book Podcast Guest Profits: How

to grow your business with a targeted interview strategy has been called the

bible of podcast guesting. He has presented at INBOUND, Harvard, the American

Marketing Association , PodFest, and Podcast Movement about using podcast

guesting as a marketing channel.

Trained as an engineer, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy

(Annapolis) and ran nuclear power plants on aircraft carriers. This systems

approach has allowed him to create, refine, execute, scale, and teach a new

marketing channel that is rapidly growing in acceptance and impact.

Since 2017, each year Tom has shared the findings from his database on The

State of Podcast Guesting.

Umm, err, uhhh, like, ya know, just, sorta, right? Filler words can be bad things and good things when it comes to podcast editing. In this episode, I share some thoughts on filler words that you may not have considered including some research that covers understanding, gender factors, and more.

068: Enterprise Podcasting Strategies with Laurie Ruettimann18 Sep 201900:33:52

This week on the podcast, I'm sharing an interview I did on the podcast Let's Fix Work with Laurie Ruettimann. If you are wondering what podcasting has to do with work, well, I often get asked questions about enterprise podcasting. Questions like, "How do we do this in our organization?" "How do we have a podcast where the CEO talks to the employees, but we keep it confidential?" Or, "How do we have a podcast for the marketing department to let other departments within the organization know the cool things that we're working on?"

In this interview we talk about individual and enterprise podcast strategies that work. So if you're interested in employee communications, if you want to help people communicate more effectively, if you want to foster creativity, collaboration, and transparency, I think podcasting might be a solution for you.

066: How having a podcast can help you market better04 Sep 201900:34:47

This is a special episode with one of my clients, Ernie Svenson. We had a great discussion recently about how lawyers can use podcasts.

Podcasting is not as hard as most people think. After having done his podcast for over a year, Ernie was ready to share some "behind the scenes" observations. The main takeaway is that you can create a podcast more easily than you'd imagine.

And the impact that a podcast will have on your marketing efforts are huge. The ROI of podcasting surpasses every other form of marketing or advertising. Listen to my interview with Ernie Svenson and find out how.

065: Let's get intimate... a replay featuring podcast nudity14 Aug 201900:09:33

Podcast hosts and listeners, guess what? You've been naked together! No seriously, you probably have! I listen to podcasts in the shower and in the bathroom in the morning while I get ready for the day ahead.  I bet you do too.

Did you know that the average podcast listener invests around 5-hours and seven minutes per week listening to their favorite shows? They listen at home, in their car, while they are walking, at work, or even at the gym.

You, as the podcast host are in your listeners ears in so many different locations. Oh yeah, and guess what else? That's a lot longer than someone who produces video. They can hear your actual voice (unlike in some blog or book they decided to read) and a podcast allows you to show a very real, authentic, and vulnerable version of yourself. You can share your stories. You can tell your potential client who you really are and make a connection.

In this episode, I share:

  • How spending intimate time with your podcast listeners is an important way to build a connection
  • Just how powerful podcasting can be to building your community
  • How one successful podcast host converts podcasts subscribers from listeners to engaged users, warm leads, and eventually customers

064: Ideas for Mindful Note-taking at Conferences07 Aug 201900:14:15

Unfortunately, a lot of people spend a lot of money to attend conferences and often walk away without taking action on any of the great stuff they learned. This bums me out. I recently saw some great suggestions for note-taking at the Workhuman conference in Nashville and wanted to share them here with you. As Podcast Movement 2019 is here in Orlando next week, this is a perfect time for you to create a note-taking strategy for yourself that will allow you to walk away from the conference and make the ideas stick.

058: How podcasts will continue to provide you income for years to come26 Jun 201900:10:47

2. Why you need to stay consistent

The Top 5: 5 Ways to Guarantee a Successful Podcast Launch19 Jun 201900:08:34

A common problem among podcasters is that they get so excited about the show they want to create or have created that after spending a lot of time and money to create an interesting show and get the best gear to record it, they just throw it out into the world and hope it sticks. They take the "Field of Dreams" approach...  if you build it, they will come…

Well, in most cases, if it isn't an insanely original idea, that happens to tap into a huge need or a huge potential audience (like something about Disney) they find that their show just falls flat. They might get 100 - 500 downloads per episode without promotion but things plateau and stay there.

I have a couple clients who came to me having 60 or more episodes on Apple Podcasts yet they were seeing download numbers that were inconsistent with the strength of their topic or show. And in every single case, one of the techniques in my Podcast Launch Formula would have solved their problem.

So let's dive in to what you need to do to launch or re-launch your podcast and grow its following.

The Top 5: It's Evergreen. Why You Should Podcast for Your Business (Reason #4)12 Jun 201900:04:57

Evergreen content is content that is always relevant. And, podcasts are an evergreen content asset.  Many people think of podcasting as a marketing tool only. Nope. Podcasting is a long-play about building a relationship with your ideal client. The end result; podcasting will give you return on investment, for years to come.

In this episode, I share:

  • Why podcasting is not a marketing tactic
  • Why front-loading your best content is a good practice
  • One concept to use in your podcast that will help you connect with your ideal listeners (aka ideal clients)

The Top 5: Build a Community from Your Podcast with Katie Krimitsos05 Jun 201900:29:58
Today Katie Krimitsos joins me on the podcast. Katie is the creator of Biz Women Rock, a podcast and community for highly ambitious entrepreneurial women who are craving more in their business.  This week we are talking about building a community from your podcast. Katie is a friend, a client, and a mentor of mine and I could think of no one better to talk about how to build a community with your podcast. In this episode, you'll hear:
  • Katie's first experience with podcasting
  • How the Biz Women Rock podcast helped Katie build such a large and engaged online community of women business owners
  • Connecting with community and creating a two-way conversation
  • Some ways Katie monetizes her podcast
  • Katie's approach to being authentic in podcasting
  • Katie's best piece of advice for building a community with your podcast

"The medium of podcasting is ridiculously intimate. Even though you are talking to so many people around the globe, you really are only talking to one person. That intimacy gets translated into a podcast. When you really accept that, you can leverage it by building that one-on-one relationship times hundreds, thousands, millions, or however many listeners you have. Community starts with that relationship."

The Top 5: 11 Ways to Monetize Your Podcast That Don't Involve Ads or Sponsors29 May 201900:11:29

You may have also heard people talk about "monetizing" your podcast with sponsorships and ads. This is the question I get more than any other question…

While it's true that ad dollars are flooding to podcasters from things like video and TV advertising, the vast majority of ad dollars are going to major media outlets.

You are much better off sponsoring yourself by making sure that everything your listener (ideal client) hears, sees, touches, and feels in relationship to your podcast is leading them to becoming your client.

The Top 5: Save Money! Podcasts Can Reduce Marketing and Networking Costs22 May 201900:09:31

How much did you spend last year on direct response, print, and awareness campaign marketing? I bet a lot, right?  I've seen crazy numbers for putting an ad on the side of a bus in larger cities. Several non-profits I worked for, in the past, easily spent $25k/year on print.

I spent at least $5k last year on my own website tweaks. And I probably spent another $10k or more on travel to conferences for networking purposes

Podcasts can reduce all of these costs. The know, like, and trust factor being built in your listener is more effective at converting them into clients than most forms of marketing and face-to-face networking. And the icing on the cake? You don't have to travel.

In this episode, you'll hear:

  • How to reduce your marketing and networking costs through podcasting
  • Podcasts allow you to connect with a much larger network of people without traveling
  • Monetizing your podcast by sponsoring yourself, by using call-to-action and lead magnets
  • Why reusing and repurposing your content helps you work smarter, not harder

052: Vocal Health for Podcasters15 May 201900:11:47

You just ran out of batched podcast episodes and you plan to record a few episodes tomorrow. You wake up in the morning and your voice is gone. What do you do?

You attended a conference over the weekend and did way too much late night networking and picked up a cold from the flights. But you have a keynote in 48 hours. What do you do?

In this episode you will learn:

1. Several quick fix remedies or cures for a scratchy throat or a lost voice

2. Long term vocal health strategies for podcasters and anyone who is a professional communicator.

051: To DIY or not to DIY Your Podcast08 May 201900:10:45

I found a great article recently in my local electric coop's magazine about DIYing a kitchen remodel and the article was so perfect. I could have just as easily replaced the word "homeowner" with "podcaster" in terms of deciding when to "DO IT YOURSELF" and when not to. So for this episode, I did!

In this episode you'll hear some important questions...

  1. Do you have the expertise?
  2. Do you have the tools?
  3. Do you have the time?
  4. Do you need someone else's help?
  5. Do you know best practices?
  6. Do you have the materials?
  7. Are you attempting to save money and do the time savings outweigh the money savings?

050: The 4 Ps of Time Optimization01 May 201900:08:44

Time is an interesting resource, unlike any other. Any two people have differing financial resources and differing skills and talents. We have different opportunities, different circumstances, and a different network of friends and acquaintances. But we all have the same number of hours in a day, a week, a month, or a year.

When it comes to time, we're all on level ground. No one has extra hours stashed away in a savings account for a rainy day. None of us has the ability to turn the clock back, stop it, or even slow it down. Our daily allotment of time is 24 hours—period—or is it?

I believe we can break down time into two categories: the first being the personal time we've been talking about above, which is finite. The second category of time involves tasks that we delegate to others. This is the only way I know we can actually multiply our time.

Let's look at the 4 Ps of Time Optimization:

  • Planning – Little of value happens without planning. Without planning time flitters away like a bird. Planning is both a discipline and an art. We discipline ourselves to sit down and plan out our day, week, or month. We plan for a launch, product development, a meeting, or whatever. We must discipline ourselves to apply various principles of planning that we learn through training and experience. We also apply helpful processes and technological aids.

But there's also an art to planning. For instance, you may plan to write a blog or create a podcast. How long will it take? We might know from experience that it takes roughly x-amount of time to write a blog, but each blog is new and different. We write one blog and the thoughts seem to fly from our brain through our fingers onto the computer screen. At other times we labor over writing a blog taking two or three times longer than we'd hoped.

This is where time management as an artform comes in. Perhaps we allotted only two hours to write that blog, but it took four. Now what do we do? We had the rest of our day planned out and now everything is piled up, pushed back, or falling off our calendar. We have to anticipate such anomalies and build in extra time. We can also get creative with the remaining tasks for the day and find that we can regain "lost" time by reorganizing the tasks that we have yet to perform.

  • Persistence – When it comes to optimizing time, persistence is another needed friend. Persistence overcomes laziness, procrastination, and setbacks. We may have a plan, but if we're not persistent in carrying it out, the best-laid plan fails to serve its purpose.

We can apply persistence in a variety of ways. Go back to the example of writing a blog. Let's say that you set aside two hours in the morning for writing your blog. You planned and you're doing your best to stick to your plan, but the words simply aren't coming. You glance at the clock and an hour has flown by and you're nowhere on your blog. What do you do? You can apply persistence by staying with it and trying a new approach to stimulate your thought, but knowing that you're going to exceed your two-hour allotment.

But you can also set your blog aside for the time being and push on to the next task on your agenda. You know from experience that sometimes during the course of a day, suddenly you'll experience an epiphany and the blog content will rush into your thoughts. In this way, you're persistent with your tasks and time allotments, but flexible and creative with when and how you complete them. Persistence is still required, but it can't always be rigid and inflexible.

  • Patience – This may seem unusual in terms of optimizing your time. Persistence and patience go hand-in-hand. Persistence without patience can frustrate us and work against us both in time and relationships. Without patience, pure persistence can make us seem like an uncaring jerk. Without patience, persistence alone blinds us to our own shortcomings and the inevitability of setbacks in any project.

Exercising patience gives us a more realistic view of the tasks before us and the uncertainties of life. Believe it or not, you can't control everything! Some old sage quipped, "A carelessly planned project takes three times longer to complete than expected; a carefully planned project will only take twice as long." Patience also gives us insight into new possibilities that we would otherwise have written off as roadblocks and setbacks.

  • People – As I mentioned above, other people offer us the only way of multiplying our time that I know of. By delegating tasks that others can perform—often better than we can—we optimize our time. When we engage the help of others, we greatly increase our capacity. We stretch time.

Also, when we coordinate the assistance of others, the whole is usually greater than the sum of its parts. This means that we'll be able to accomplish more as a team than its individual members might have accomplished on their own.

I know that some reading this are thinking, "I can't afford to hire someone else." More accurately, you can't afford not to. How valuable is your time? What is your hourly rate worth? Find someone who is willing to take on one of your tasks at a fraction of your personal hourly rate and who can perform the task better than you can and you'll be saving money!

Optimize and even multiply your time by applying these 4 Ps: Planning, Persistence, Patience, and People!

049: 5 Strategies for Boosting Persistence24 Apr 201900:07:26

There is always some measure of success in persistence. But giving up offers none. Regardless of the outcome, persisting through tough times and overwhelming odds becomes part of the victory. Here are just a few reasons to persist:

  • Persistence gets results. Few things in life worth achieving are gained without persistence. Nearly all successful people we look up to have a long, hard trail of failures and severe challenges behind them, through which they persisted. Had they given up along the way, they would have experienced failure just before their breakthrough occurred. The harder you work, the luckier you get.
  • Persistence sets you apart from everyone else. Anyone can quit. Quitting is the easy way out. Quitting is the coward's way out. Quitting becomes addicting. Persisting puts you in a whole different class of the elite.
  • Persistence builds character. Giving up takes no effort. Giving up gives one a false sense of relief that ultimately feels more like defeat. Any growth of muscle or character requires resistance training. It takes courage and strong character to persist, and in persisting, your character becomes even stronger.
  • Persistence always offers some measure of success. Just by hanging in there, you've accomplished more than most. But in quitting there is no success. Abraham Lincoln, a man all too familiar with failure, said, "If you are resolutely determined to accomplish some thing, the thing is more than half done already. Always bear in mind that your resolution to succeed is more important than any other thing."

But when the bills are piling up and everyone is telling you to hang it up and get a "real job," it's hard to persist. How do you maintain persistence in the face of so much apparent failure and resistance? Here are 5 Strategies for Boosting Persistence:

  • Believe in yourself and what you have to offer. This requires a realistic, but optimistic view of yourself, not to be confused with flippant arrogance. Sylvester Stallone was rejected by more than 600 casting agents before developing his Rocky screenplay. His first film took in $117 million (in 1976 dollars) and made him more than $5 million. If you have something worthwhile and valuable to give to others, keep believing in yourself and never quit.

"Belief is the thermostat that regulates what we accomplish in life. A person is a product of his own thoughts. Believe BIG! Adjust your thermostat forward. Launch your success offensive with honest, sincere belief that you can succeed. Believe big and grow big." – David J. Schwartz, The Magic of Thinking Big.
  • Keep trying new things. Maybe you're not sure yet what your product or service is, but you desire successful entrepreneurship desperately. Then keep trying new things. The Wright Brothers experienced thousands of failed experiments before getting it right. Discover your niche. Experiment. "The way to succeed is to double your failure rate." – Thomas J. Watson, founder IBM.
  • Redefine failure. View minor failed experiments as learning experiences. Now you know one more way not to succeed. Instead, view quitting as failure. As long as you persist, you haven't failed.
  • When you fall, keep getting up. If you have ever watched a baby learning to walk, they fall a thousand times before they can walk. You're no infant, but your business may still be in its infancy. Expect to fall, trip, and stumble, but keep getting up. And soon you'll find that your business is not only walking but running like a gazelle!
  • Don't listen to naysayers. When Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield wrote the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, they were rejected by 140 publishers. Publishers told them the book wouldn't sell. Those publishers were professionals. They're supposed to know what they're talking about, right? But when the two authors finally landed a contract with a publisher willing to take a risk, their books sold over 100 million copies! Don't listen to naysayers. Instead, find and spend time with those who believe in you, support you, and encourage you.

Persistence is a key ingredient for success. So, keep at it. Don't give up. Persist, because success is right around the corner.

156: Why Your Podcast Cover Design Matters31 Aug 202200:12:21

Even though podcast recording is mainly an audio content medium these days, you do need to have some visual components, and chief among those items is your podcast cover artwork, also known as podcast artwork, podcast cover art, cover art, podcast tile, and more. A lot of new listeners will discover your podcast via their podcast directory, where your cover image will be the first thing they see and how they learn about your podcast brand. You want your cover art to appeal to them and invite them in to see what your podcast is all about.

For many reasons, podcast cover art design can make or break your podcast brand. In this post we'll go through many of the reasons you need a podcast cover and how you can create good podcast cover art that is effective in connecting with your podcasting audience.

First, we want to make sure you meet the requirements of directories like Apple podcasts. Your podcast cover design must meet the following requirements…

  • square
  • 1400 x 1400 pixels minimum up to 3000 x 3000 pixels maximum in size
  • jpeg or png file type
  • as close to 500 kbs in size as possible

At Emerald City Productions, we use professional designers to create the best podcast artwork for our launch clients and also advise our production clients on how to improve their existing podcast cover art.

048: Don't Focus on the Rock in the Road17 Apr 201900:07:55

If you've ever ridden a motorcycle, or even a bicycle, you know that hitting debris in the road can cause a serious accident. Veteran motorcyclists warn that if you see a rock or other debris in the road, whatever you do, don't focus on it, because you'll hit whatever you keep your eyes on.

A Powerful Principle

You hit whatever you focus on. That's the powerful principle here and it's not only true when riding a two-wheeler, it's also true in business and in life. This principle has both its good and bad sides. Let's get the bad side out of the way first.

The Bad Side of Focus

Focusing on the "rocks" in our life and business inevitably causes us to crash. For instance, when we're all-consumed with our own faults or those of someone else, that's all we see; that's all we expect. In business too, focusing exclusively on a problem or obstacle gives it a life of its own that soon overwhelms us.

  • When we focus on problems, weaknesses, excuses, and obstacles that's what consumes our thoughts.
  • Negative thinking gets us nowhere fast!
  • Fixating on problems makes them loom larger in our minds and does nothing to fix them.
  • Dwelling on the obstacles gives them power and our worst nightmare becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
  • What we dread most becomes our experience and we hear ourselves saying things like, "I knew this would happen!" Of course you did! You inadvertently brought it on yourself!

But ironically, the very principle that can derail us and get us into so much trouble also has a very powerful good side to it.

The Good Side of Focus

Here are some tips for focusing on the right things—things that will keep us upright, move us forward, and get us past those obstacles and problems in life:

  • Focus on solutions, a way out, or a lofty goal. This takes real discipline. Back to the motorcycle analogy, instead of keeping your eyes on the rock in the road, you have to focus on a clear path next to the rock. It's hard not to focus on the rock, but you must, because wherever you focus that's where your wheels will take you. This doesn't mean you ignore the problem. You have to take note of it. But you don't let it dominate your thoughts. Instead, you focus on the way around the problem. You focus on solutions and your goals.

  • Magnify the good and positive. No one and nothing is perfect. In your relationships, for instance, there's no doubt that people around you have idiosyncrasies and faults that bug you. You also surely have faults that you wish you didn't have. But instead of focusing on these, focus on the positive. What is it about the other person (or yourself) that you admire or appreciate? Focus on that, encourage that, and expect that.

  • Take your cue from overcomers. Look to others who have overcome obstacles and problems far greater than your own. Let their stories motivate and inspire you. Here's a short list of successful individuals who refused to focus on the "rocks" in their lives when things got really rough.

  1. Before becoming president, Abraham Lincoln's failures – his "rocks in the road" – are legendary there were so many!

  2. Henry Ford's first attempt at building cars ended in complete failure and bankruptcy.

  3. Walt Disney was cheated out of his first big business deal in New York, but that didn't stop him!

  4. Milton Hershey, founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company had no formal education and failed repeatedly in his business attempts before finally hitting the right "recipe."

  5. Dr. Martin Luther King overcame an attempted suicide and battled with an addiction to smoking to become a powerful spiritual leader and spokesman.

  6. Sir Ernest Shackleton, after three failed attempts to rescue his men stranded in the Antarctic, finally succeeded in doing so with a borrowed ship from a foreign country.

  7. When Amy Purdy turned 19, she was rushed to the hospital in septic shock. The violent illness took her spleen, both kidneys, and both her legs below the knees. She was given less than 2% chance of survival and placed in an induced coma.

With a kidney transplant and prosthetic legs, Amy not only survived, but went on to compete as a world-class snowboarder. Amy also became a successful fashion model and motivational speaker. She has appeared on Oprah, Dancing with the Stars, The Amazing Race, and gave a TED talk that set the standard for future speakers.

Focusing on stories like Amy's and others has the profound impact in our lives of turning our "rocks in the road" into insignificant pebbles. Take a good look at what you're focusing on, because it greatly determines the course of your life and business.

047: 8 Ways to Lower Your Stress10 Apr 201900:09:58

Stress is one of the leading causes of stroke and hypertension in our society. But stress isn't always a dirty word! We need a certain amount of stress in our lives in order to function well. For instance, a desire to excel in our business; the drive to please customers; and the practice of goal-setting and goal-completion all impose a level of stress on us that is good and productive.

However, too much stress, or the wrong kind of stress can:

  • Kill creativity
  • Cause irritability and harm relationships
  • Squash fun and our enjoyment of life
  • Damage our physical, emotional, and spiritual health

Stress can either come from outside of us, or be self-imposed. Either way, we can take steps to greatly reduce and/or manage our stress levels. Here are 8 effective ways to lower stress:

  • Set reasonable goals for yourself. Here's where you really have to know yourself. Or, if you're in a long-term relationship, your significant other can provide you with great feedback. We need a certain level of stress in order to stretch and grow. But too much stress places unreasonable demands on us that render us less effective. Think of this in terms of a sport like surfing. The surfer wants waves big enough to give them a thrill and increase their skill. Waves that are too small are boring. But waves that are too big for the surfer's skill and comfort level are dangerous and frightening. Find your stress sweet-spot in goal-setting and "ride that wave!"
  • Exercise regularly. When we're under stress, regardless of the cause, our bodies secrete stress chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol. These are both important chemicals in a fight-or-flight emergency. But many stressful situations don't allow for fighting or fleeing. Over time these stress chemicals damage our health. The best way to flush the body from these stress chemicals is to exercise. Often, I've experienced and heard others say when exercising, "I can feel the stress melting away!" You don't have to have a 6-pack to get the benefits of exercise. Just get out and be active regularly.
  • Eat less and fast intermittently. Eating too much food and too often makes us lethargic and can cause all kinds of metabolic issues and diseases. These add to and even cause stress. Intermittent fasting is a great way to discipline yourself to cut back on the amount of food you eat. You can fast intermittently in a variety of ways:

  • Fast 24 hours once a week.
  • Don't eat between 7pm and 7am.
  • Fast for a whole day once a month.
  • When you fast, always stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

  • Laugh a lot! Laughing really is good medicine. Laughing gives us a more measured perspective of reality. When we laugh, we usually do so in the context of healthy relationships. Laughing prevents us from taking ourselves too seriously.

  • Cultivate healthy relationships. Nothing is more stressful than relational conflict. Don't hold grudges. Forgive others their faults. Do all you can to invest in healthy relationships by loving and spending time with others.

  • Slow down. Do you find yourself gripping the steering wheel tightly and bearing down on that slow driver in front of you? Slow down; take it easy; don't be in such a hurry! When we hurry we make mistakes and that too adds to our stress levels. Relax, and enjoy the view.

  • Avoid debt. Debt is a hard task-master! When we bought that new car on credit, or made that purchase on our VISA card, we thought we could handle the payments, no problem. But situations change, and that new car or purchase may now feel like a prison sentence. Take steps to get out of debt if you're in debt; and if you're out of debt, cling to the freedom it offers.

  • Take time to relax, meditate, and get plenty of sleep. Your body and mind need down-time. Do something enriching and enjoyable: read a book; pursue a hobby; watch a good movie; play games with friends; go for a stroll with a loved one. Find a guided meditation app that you like and work daily on calming your mind and being mindful. And while you're at it, be sure to get a good night's sleep!

Too much of the wrong kind of stress can steal our joy and our health. Put one or more of these stress-reduction strategies into practice today and experience some relief! Then manage your stress as a way of life.

046: 5 Strategies for Dealing Effectively with Change03 Apr 201900:08:20

Change is inevitable. Some changes we initiate and enter into willingly, while other changes are thrust upon us. Changes that happen to us may be desirable or undesirable. All change is a step into the unknown. Changes emerge from a variety of sources:

  • Changes in family
  • Changes as we age
  • Changes through the phases of our business
  • Changes in technology
  • Changes in the market
  • Changes in what were once tried and true practices
  • Changes brought on by a significant personal event or calamity
  • Changes in relationships

Whether we choose a change for ourselves, or have some change imposed on us, change demands that we leave what we know and move toward what is not yet clearly defined. For this reason, change offers us amazing opportunities for personal and professional growth—but we often miss those opportunities. Here are just a few reasons why:

  • We may buck or balk at the change. When we actively resist change that is unavoidable, we're prone to fight, kick, grumble, and complain about it. If the change is truly inevitable, then this negative response only serves to prolong our misery and hinder our growth. This response also makes us difficult to live with!

  • We may blame others for the change. If what we perceive to be a negative change is forced upon us, it's easy to resent those who imposed the change. Our resentment can evolve into anger, holding grudges, and broken relationships. Our dark responses place us in a thick, gloomy smog that prevents us from seeing or dealing with the situation clearly.

  • We may retreat from the change. We do this by passively avoiding the change, trying to postpone it, or deny its reality. This approach transports us into a fantasy world of our own creation where no real growth or forward movement can occur.

How do we respond to change in a healthy manner?

5 Strategies for Dealing Effectively with Change

  • Accept the change and step into it with childlike wonder. Have you ever noticed that when Americans travel abroad, there are really only two major types of tourists? On the one hand are tourists who want to experience their host country by retaining as much of America as possible. They eat at McDonalds, they get their coffee at Starbucks, they stay at places where everyone speaks English, and so forth. Frankly, I'm not sure why they even bothered traveling abroad, when they could experience the same thing in a burrow of Detroit, New York, or Los Angeles.

The second kind of tourist studies the language of the host country before departing. They seek to stay in out-of-the-way places unfrequented by tourists. They wander around with childlike wonder attempting to soak up as much of the culture, its people, and its beauty as possible. I think you get the picture.

When change is thrust upon us, we need to approach it like that second tourist. But you may object, "The tourist chooses to travel to a foreign land. I didn't choose this change!" This leads us to the second strategy.

  • Anticipate change. Okay, we may not have chosen a particular change, but often we can anticipate it and prepare ourselves for it. We already know that change is inevitable, so look around you. What changes do you see coming down the pike? In view of those changes, ask yourself:

  1. What new skills will I need in order to embrace this change?
  2. What can I learn from this change, personally and professionally?
  3. How can I leverage this change for good in my life, my business, and the lives of those I love?

  • Assess the change. If the change appears to be unpleasant or unwanted, discover whether it's possible to reject or negotiate some aspects of the change. Then, embrace what you cannot alter and make the best of it. Stephen Covey lists "Fear of change and postponing improvement" as one of the seven habits of ineffective people.

  • Allow time to grieve. While this may seem overstated, some changes warrant a time of grief. For instance, when we send a child off to college, we're happy for them and their new experience, but we grieve their departure. We may also grieve losing a long-time client to a competitor. Or we may simply struggle with having to leave an old system or process behind. If that's the case, have a funeral for it. Celebrate its past service but put it to rest. Doing so will help you move on and embrace the new change.

  • Advance as a change-agent. Whenever possible, initiate change instead of having it imposed on you. This puts you in charge. Constantly watch for ways to improve what you're doing. Are you currently using two apps that could be replaced with one? You know that weekly or monthly task that takes so much time? How can you complete it more quickly and still do it well? When you hear yourself complaining about the way something works, why not improve it? Maybe there's a routine task that you loath. Find someone else to do it!

Let's face it, things would get pretty boring without change! Don't let change get you down. Promote it, embrace it and grow by it.

045: 5 Keys to Building Strong Relationships27 Mar 201900:08:52

As entrepreneurs and business people it's easy to slip into the mindset that building relationships is merely a means to an end—making the sale. Now, there's no argument…we're all in business to make money and without question, relationships help us accomplish this.

But think about it. If we stoop to merely using people to get what we want, we might have a healthy bank account but be bankrupt in our relationships and our lives. After all, what's the use of money if you can't enjoy it and have no one with whom you can enjoy it? Imagine if your banker was the only person to show up at your funeral!

I suggest that we change our thinking. I believe that if we cultivate deep relationships with others, one of the byproducts of those relationships will be prosperity. And forming meaningful relationships makes the journey so much sweeter! The joys of true companionship, partnership, and fellowship far outweigh any bank account. Yet, in my experience, when we focus on relationships, the money will follow.

Last week we talked about how executives can use a podcast to connect with the current and future employees. This week we're going to cover how podcasts can help executives leave the c-suite and start out in a new career.

Executives might want to leave their c-suite position for many reasons, but starting a consulting or speaking business can be hard. You may want to share your expertise with the world, but what is the best way to start out?

041: Reasons Why Executives Should be Podcasting - #2 Connect with employees27 Feb 201900:08:59

Last week we talked about how executives can use a podcast to put a face on their company or brand. This week we're going to cover how podcasts can help executives connect with current and potential employees.

Podcasts showcase authenticity and personality even better than other mediums like video and a blog. Podcasts allow you to get rid of the long emails and scripted speeches. You can just talk and let them hear a more personal side of you.

Leaders and other key members of the staff (the podcast host) are in their ears of the listener a lot longer than someone who's in a video. They can hear your actual voice unlike some blog they decided to read. And you come across more real and authentic because there isn't fancy lighting and graphics like you'd have in a produced video.

Podcasts can be consumed on the go. No longer do you need to have as many boring meetings to communicate with all of your employees. Your employees can listen in the car, at the gym, walking to work… wherever they want.

In this episode you'll learn:

  1. Why podcasting helps executives connect with employees
  2. 7 ways companies can use podcasts to communicate
  3. How companies like Marriott are using podcasts to recruit

040: Reasons Why Executives Should be Podcasting - #1 Give your company a face20 Feb 201900:07:41

Companies with the most respected and influential leaders will create the most buzz, leads and sales for their organizations.

So, it's important for companies to give themselves a "face" consumers can know, like and trust by humanizing their brand with their top executives.

Podcasting can offer that humanizing experience, giving the top executives a place to share a ton of content and become a valuable resource in the industry.

So in this episode I share some of the reasons why I believe executives should be podcasting.

In this episode you'll learn:

  1. Who or what potential customers would rather engage with…
  2. Why a podcast changes how people view executives
  3. Which crucial demographic is more likely to listen to podcasts
  4. How a podcast builds credibility
  5. How podcasting gives you a leg up against the competition

039: 6 Questions to Determine whether it's Time to Outsource13 Feb 201900:10:46

Often when launching a business, we're strapped for cash, so we try to do everything ourselves. But outsourcing certain tasks or services may be something we need to do sooner than we think. In fact, neglecting to outsource services may cost us dearly in the following ways:

  • We end up wasting many hours trying to do something we have no skill, training, or interest in.
  • We achieve second-rate quality attempting to do things we're not good at.
  • We add to our stress unnecessarily.
  • We're stealing precious time from doing the things we're good at and enjoy.
  • We hinder our revenue streams by focusing on things that don't make us money.

And I'm sure the list could go on.

I admit that I am someone who learned this the hard way. I easily spent 8 years after starting my business, trying to do everything myself. Trying to learn how to do things that just didn't make sense to my brain. And then, because of stress or frustration, I would actually outsource something and then make a poor decision on who to hire because I was rushed and didn;t have time to research the choice.

So, in this episode I share some questions to ask yourself to determine whether it's time to outsource a service.

Authenticity is key in podcasting. In this episode I cover why you should tell your story and share your real life; the good, bad and the ugly, the importance of interaction with your listeners,  and how engagement from your audience is an important indicator of the quality of your content.

038: Walt Disney World and 5 Pillars of a Great Customer Experience06 Feb 201900:11:42

Those of you who know me, know I love Walt Disney World. And the number one reason I love it is the Disney level customer service. It's legendary. Corporations travel to Disney all the time to learn from them. To learn how they make their customer experience so amazing.

Inarguably, quality of both service and product form the foundation of great customer service. Like that restaurant, we can offer a stellar product, but if our service is lousy, we'll turn people away. Likewise, we can't just eke by on wonderful service if our product stinks. And while the restaurant example deals with a tangible product, the same holds true when our "product" is a service.

Whether you like it or not, "The customer's perception is your reality." In the end, it really doesn't matter how we view our products and services if our customers perceive them differently.

But for the purposes of this episode, let's assume that you have a great product that people want. So, let's focus on your customers' experience.

In this episode you'll learn 5 pillars of the customer experience:

  • Doing what you promised
  • Establishing systems
  • Personalization
  • Repeat customers
  • Make it easy

037: The Importance of Having Thick Skin04 Feb 201900:10:20

The human body is incredible in its design. If you take any inanimate object or material and subject it continually to abrasion, you'll wear it down. But if you expose your hands continually to hard work, over time you'll develop calluses. These patches of thick skin protect your hands from abrasions and other injuries—amazing!

But the same holds true in our business. We may serve 100 clients, most of whom are raving fans. But if a few or even one of those clients is caustic, abrasive and cutting in their evaluation of our products and services, that tiny minority can wear away at our morale. That's why we need to develop "thick skin" or "emotional calluses."

Purely from a relational standpoint, having thick skin prevents us from taking offense at others easily. With thick skin we give people the benefit of the doubt. We refrain from reading negativity into their comments and reactions. We let petty differences slide. With thick skin we're easier to get along with.

In this episode you'll learn why failure is vital to success:

  • The dangers of thin skin
  • Tips for developing emotional calluses

036: Failure is Vital to Success28 Jan 201900:09:08

Nobody likes to fail. I don't like to fail. Yet, I'm hard-pressed to think of anything worthwhile that was ever accomplished without some measure of failure first.

Consider Thomas Edison. As an inventor, Edison failed 1,000 times at inventing the light bulb. But when a reporter asked, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn't fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps."

In this episode you'll learn why failure is vital to success:

  • Badge of honor
  • Learn something new
  • Builds character
  • Sweeter success

034: Clearing the Fog Around Coaching21 Jan 201900:10:30

The term COACHING is thrown around a lot these days with a wide variety of meanings. Just like the sun burns off the fog, let's try to shed some light to clear away the fog around coaching.

To look at coaching simply, let me suggest that there are three primary types of coaches: the skills coach, the mentor coach, and the professional coach. All three types of coaches are valid and helpful within the bounds of what they're designed to do.

In this episode you'll learn about:

  • Skills Coaching
  • Mentor Coaching
  • Professional Coaching

033: 10 Ways to Increase Your Creativity14 Jan 201900:11:51

How many of you are sitting here right now, and you don't have a topic for your next blog post or podcast episode or live video? Do you have that sinking feeling in your stomach, knowing you need to create something, but you have know idea what it is going to be? Man, that feeling sucks doesn't it? I hate it when I'm staring down at my fingers floating over the keyboard, trying to think of that next great line of copy for a sales page, or an important email...

Have you ever heard someone say, "I'm not a creative person"? Don't believe it! We were designed to be creative. Each one of us is unique, but creativity is in our DNA. The point is, creativity expresses itself creatively and you don't have to be like any of those people in order to be creative.

When we create, we experience joy and personal fulfillment. When we create, others benefit in some way from our creativity. And creativity breeds prosperity. If you want to help people and earn a good living along the way, then keep creating. But there's the dilemma... how do we keep creating? How do we keep those creative juices flowing?

In this episode you'll learn:

  • The Power of Curiosity
  • How Reading Feeds You
  • The Benefits of Hardship

032: The Power of Words07 Jan 201900:08:04

You may be familiar with the childhood rhyme, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me." For a child, that may seem like a great comeback toward a bully with a sharp tongue, but the statement is undeniably false. Words can and do hurt! In fact there's an ancient proverb that says...

The tongue has the power of life and death.

The tongue—our words—can be used for good or bad, to build or destroy, to commend or cut down. With our tongues we can express: gratitude, love, joy, truth, hope, encouragement, trust, kindness, gentleness, humility, and wisdom.

Or, the tongue can be: destructive, caustic, divisive, unloving, harsh, deceitful, boastful, self-serving, hateful, demeaning, and foolish.

In this episode you'll learn:

  • What influences our words?
  • 4 Tips for Guarding Your Words
  • The dilemma we face everyday with our words

031: 7 Great Reasons to Give to Charity31 Dec 201800:08:43

Depending where you are in the development of your business, you may or may not have thought of giving to charity. On the one hand, when we're just starting out, we may be struggling just to get by, much less give to others. We may think, "Someday, when I'm doing very well, then I'll start giving." On the other hand, when we're doing very well, we tend to hold onto our money, finding it difficult to let go of what we've worked hard to obtain. Whatever our situation, there will always be arguments mitigating against giving to charity.

Interestingly, we discover that the poor tend to be more charitable than the rich. Such was the finding of Paul Piff, a psychology researcher at the University of California, Berkley, in a study he conducted in 2010. Obviously, the wealthy have the capacity to give more total dollars. But those who have little to begin with are inclined to give away a greater percentage of what they possess.

In this episode you'll hear:

  • 7 great reason to give to charity
  • How to decide which charities to give to
  • Treating charitable gifts as a long term investment

Can't see the forest for the trees? The Dangers of Proximity Blindness24 Dec 201800:09:33

Have you ever heard the phrase "you can't see the forest for the trees?" Well today, I want to talk about why that phrase, or as I like to call it "proximity blindness" is the very reason that you should always have outside eyes and ears, experts, coaches, masterminds, and consultants helping you with your podcast, business, or anything really.

We all suffer from proximity blindness… this inability to see the forest for the trees... You need a bird's eye view to be able to have a good perspective on a problem sometimes. When you are too close to something, you may not be able to have the 30,000 foot view of things. The outside perspective is often crucial for you to find the truth.

In this episode you'll hear:

  • How small problems often mask the larger problems
  • Why proximity blindness can lead to missed opportunities
  • the limits of perception and the importance of complete context

Aim for Progress, Not Perfection03 Dec 201800:09:04

In her book Lean In: Women, Work and the Will To Succeed, Sheryl Sandburg shares one of her favorite mottos. "Done is better than perfect"? In this episode, I want to explain why you should Aim for Progress, Not Perfection.

Podcast Strategies for Lawyers, Attorneys, and Realtors26 Nov 201800:09:41

It's important for lawyers and realtors to build a trust bond with potential clients. In this episode, I share three ways lawyers and realtors can use a podcast to create a bond with their listeners.

Before I dive into what you'll hear in this episode, I'd like to revisit trust and building a bond with podcasting.  If you remember from one of my earlier episodes, I said that podcast hosts and listeners have been naked together. Yes, seriously.  You, as the host, are in your listeners ears in so many locations; the bathroom, the car, out walking the dog and yes, even in the shower, together. All the while, they can hear your voice, get to know you in an authentic and real way and make deep connections with you.

As a realtor or lawyer, if you can share stories of how you started your business or stories of people you've helped, that's pretty powerful. Podcasting helps lawyers and realtors become experts people know, like and trust.

In this episode you'll learn:

  • Why creating a community podcast is better than creating one related to realty trends, or law topics. Plus, one example of a great community podcast hosted by a personal injury attorney.
  • The benefit to creating an interview-based podcast where your guests are your clients
  • Some ways to use your podcast episodes as a jumping off point for writing a book
