| Critiquing my First Therapist Website | 30 Aug 2024 | 00:39:35 | |
When I made my first therapist website in 2016, I slapped it together without really knowing what I was doing. I've learned a thing or two about creating effective private practice websites since then, so I thought it would be fun to go back and take a look at my first website. I offer some critiques, there's a definite cringe moment, but I also felt really proud of what I built given where I was at. If you're just starting out with your website or you're feeling stuck in the process of creating your website, I hope this encourages you knowing we all go through the scary and awkward experience of building a website for the first time. | Dealing with Angry Therapy Clients - My go-to Approach | 15 Mar 2024 | 00:19:30
I've found it challenging to find resources on how to navigate angry outbursts from clients in therapy, so I thought I would share a list of tools I've compiled from various resources over the years into a general routine I utilize to help clients through angry outbursts. Of course, if you are concerned you may be in danger, or if your client's behavior is escalating, I encourage you to seek consultation straight away to make sure you're safe and also to support the best care for your client(s). Today we're diving into the topic of therapist isolation. Rather than offer some peppy tips to make friends, I take a deeper dive into some of the reasons (in my opinion) that our field has become so isolating overall. | Why Therapists Shame Each Other's Income | 23 Aug 2024 | 00:20:18
As therapists, we're unfortunately quite capable of shaming our fellow therapists about money. A therapist advocating for higher pay gets labeled as “greedy” and uncaring whereas a therapist working a thanklessly low-paying job gets called out for practicing poor self-care or not prioritizing their household finances. This happens for a variety of reasons - far too many to tackle in a single episode. But I thought we could look at one variable: how a dollar amount equals different amounts based on an individual's financial situation. A dollar means different things in different contexts, and I think that's important to consider before we go judging each other about what we charge or how much we make. I do a deep dive into what I mean in today's episode. FREE Guide: Start a Private Practice in Counseling: https://tinyurl.com/y9ek9en8 LINKS *Some links are affiliate links. We're tackling a big one in this week's episode! There's a misconception that early career therapists and new private practice owners are "supposed" to charge less than those later in their career. In this episode we tackle some of the common misconceptions I hear about setting our rate in private practice and I offer some of my semi-ranty thoughts about setting fees in the context of our broken healthcare system. | What's the Ideal Therapist Schedule? | 10 Nov 2023 | 00:49:16
I’ve always been so curious to know what the most ideal, perfect therapist schedule is. Not only do I wonder how many clients per week should we see to maximize happiness, but also, how many clients per day? And how many back-to-back? Do we need to contain them during regular business hours or do we need to be open to seeing clients during nights and weekends? In today’s episode, I set out to answer this question through an informal survey of my email list, which received 125 responses (!!). THANK you for responding, it’s so helpful! | What I Wish I'd Asked Before Becoming a Therapist | 09 Aug 2024 | 00:31:44
Given how many folks leave the profession early on or who wind up regretting their career choice along the way, I thought it would be helpful to share some valuable questions to ask before diving into the therapy career. I also think some of these questions can be quite helpful to ask for those of us who are already therapists. In the second half of the episode, I share some of the questions you suggest folks ask before becoming a therapist and share some of my reactions to those. | What Ending Therapy Actually Looks Like | 02 Aug 2024 | 00:30:16
When I was taught about what it looked like for therapy to end with our clients, it was always a graduation-like, kumbaya moment where were had a full session or two to process things ending, reminisce on our clients' growth, and help them plan for a successful future without therapy. There would be a beautiful send-off. Tears might be shed. In reality, most of my clients don't end therapy this way. It's actually relatively rare (in my practice at least). So in this video, I thought I'd shed light on some of the more common ways that therapy ends. I also go on a rant about why I have a deep dislike of the word "termination" and I hope we can change our vocabulary regarding the close of the therapeutic relationship. | How I Approach Treatment Planning as a Therapist | 07 Feb 2025 | 00:33:12
Let's dive into treatment planning, shall we? ;) Somehow I haven't made an episode about treatment planning in the 6+ years of making private practice content. It's time! In this episode, I share some more nuanced thoughts beyond the typical assessment tools and SMART goals that we usually learn about when talking about treatment planning. I hope some of you find this useful. Keep in mind that I'm just sharing how I approach treatment planning. | Supporting Therapy Clients After the U.S. Election | 15 Nov 2024 | 00:36:02
The election is affecting all of us in different ways, and I was curious to ask how supporting our clients during the election has affected us uniquely. In this episode, I share your responses to three questions I asked on Instagram: 1. What’s been the hardest part of supporting your therapy clients post-election? 2. What’s been the most positive part about supporting your therapy clients post-election? 3. How has it affected you to support your therapy clients while doing your own processing? I know it's been a roller coaster ride for many of us. However you might be experiencing this time, I hope you are taking care of yourself. LINKS *Some links are affiliate links. | Tips for New Therapists to Feel Less Anxious | 01 Nov 2024 | 00:23:35
I wanted to create an episode normalizing the anxiety most of us carry early in our therapy careers. I used to think that I wasn't supposed to feel anxious, so when the anxiety showed up I made every effort to eliminate it. I interpreted my anxiety as a sign that maybe I wasn't ready to be a therapist, or maybe that my anxiety disorder was returning. But now, looking back, some anxiety while we're practicing therapy with real therapy clients makes absolute sense. If we focus on normalizing the anxiety rather than fighting it, it might help the anxiety stay at a manageable level. Of course, this is just my perspective and opinion. I'd love to hear your perspective in the comments! Thank you to Paubox for sponsoring this episode. Paubox makes HIPAA-secure email easy and streamlined. | Working Overseas as a Therapist with Dr Therese Mascardo | 25 Oct 2024 | 00:38:20
Today’s episode is a chatty interview with Dr. Therese Mascardo of Exploring Therapy. Not only is Dr. Therese a dear friend of mine, she spent the last five years living in Lisbon, Portugal while seeing therapy clients living in California (yes, her workday starts at 2:00pm to accommodate the time difference!). We kept our conversation pretty informal, and meandered through a few different topics: -What inspired Dr. Therese to go fully remote in 2015 -Why she decided to move to Lisbon full time in 2019 -How she overcame pushback to pursue her dreams -What she’s learned about our profession now that she’s lived abroad -What our hopes are for the therapy profession going forward We share lots of giggles along the way (we’re friends, we can’t help it!), and we let our conversation go on a few side quests as we chat.
