S9 Ep35 CIRCLE OF FRIENDS: Hilliary Bianca Salamanca - on on building community through circularity and restoring a Brooklyn townhouse with vintage finds.10 Nov 202500:57:56

On today's show, we're chatting with Hilliary—a vintage collector and event producer who's building community at the intersection of sustainability and style.

Hilliary is the founder of Circle of Friends, where she hosts The Stoop Series—a live interview series that's making circular fashion accessible and inspiring. With Circle of Friends, she's using her platform to elevate the voices of vintage dealers, sustainable brands, and circular economy innovators, showing people why secondhand should always be the first choice.

And if you're a collector yourself, you're going to love this conversation.

In this episode, Hilliary shares her journey with circular fashion – how she fell in love with vintage markets while studying abroad in Florence, to her growing silver collection of hosting and homewares. Plus, how she's restoring a 1899 Brooklyn townhouse entirely with vintage and secondhand finds.

Oh yeah – and we talk Brimfield, she's a Brimfield fanatic, just like me. What I love about Hilliary's approach is that she's building a vintage-filled life through relationships and community – she's built connections with vendors at markets like Brimfield who remember her, save pieces for her, and have become genuine friends. Very within the ethos of Circle of Friends.

This is a really fun one – let's dive right in!

Pre-Loved Podcast: D Matt Smith & New burgh Vintage Emporium

In this episode, I'm chatting with Matt Smith, founder of D. Matt Smith vintage & archive. Matt's love of vintage started in his eastern Kentucky hometown and he was inspired to pursue a degree in apparel merchandising. Over the years, Matt developed an incredible print and vintage archive, which is now used by design teams and industry leaders worldwide.

Today, he splits his time between his archive, and curating the Newburgh Vintage Emporium, which is a vintage and antiques collective that he owns with his partner. Since taking over the Newburgh Vintage Emporium in 2019, he's worked to turn it into a destination in the Hudson Valley and greater New York area – an achievement which was recently recognized by the New York Times! Pre-Loved Podcast: Rosella Vintage & Minneapolis Vintage

Jahna Peloquin is a Minneapolis-based style writer, stylist and style expert with a passion for local fashion, community, sustainability, the arts, and all things vintage. Her writing and styling has been published in Minneapolis Star Tribune, Mpls.St.Paul Magazine and Midwest Home, and she served as the Style Editor of Minnesota Monthly and the Fashion Director of Rosedale Center. Building on 15 years in the local fashion community as a stylist and fashion reporter, Jahna co-founded Fashion Week MN in 2015 as a vehicle to support the local fashion community.

Most recently, she founded her own vintage fashion brand, Rosella Vintage, and is a regular vendor at the Minneapolis Vintage Market, and at other pop-ups around the Twin Cities area.

Coming soon – late September — you'll be able to find Rosella Vintage at a collective vintage shop called Olio Vintage, so you'll have more opportunities to shop in-person! She's also planning to launch her own website around this time.

In this episode, we talk about the Minneapolis fashion scene she grew up in, being a part of local fashion shows, working as a fashion writer, the start of her vintage shop, and her favorite style moments!

When I chat with her, it really brings to light the importance of community in creating a great local vintage scene, and I think that leads us in to the secondhand half of our show really well! For the second half of the show, we're headed to a Minneapolis Vintage Market event. Now, the market rotates through the Twin Cities every month (super cool!) but this particular market was actually at the Triple-A baseball stadium, home of the St. Paul Saints, a Minneapolis Twins affiliate!

This was such a fun environment for a vintage market, and I had an absolute blast strolling around with my concessions and a beer chatting with the local Minneapolis vintage vendors.

Let's head in and hear their stories!

Pre-Loved Podcast: Carrie Diaz of Best Friend Central

Today, I'm joined by Carrie Diaz of Best Friend Central. Carrie opened her first vintage and upcycling boutique in Los Angeles back in 2005, and some of her vintage finds from those days were styled on the seasons of Mad Men – you better believe we chat about that! These days, she runs a vintage boutique called Best Friend Central, and she works at the intersection of mental health and style.

When Carrie signed the lease on the space that would be Best Friend Central in the early days of the pandemic lockdown she felt like she had to muster up real courage to do something most considered unthinkable. But she painted her storefront's door bright yellow (to symbolize hope) and for the last few years she's been building something really special for her neighborhood, based around positivity and friendship as much as style.

Let's dive right into this episode and have a chat about where style meets well-being!

Pre-Loved Podcast: Kalamazoo Vintage

This is a special episode from the road in Kalamazoo! We're hearing from so many incredible vintage sellers in Kalamazoo, starting Anika, the owner of Kalamazoo Fashion House and Great Lakes Thrift Co.

Anika Johnson is a lifelong avid thrifter and a West Michigan native. Today, Anika owns and operates both Great Lakes Thrift Co., and the Kalamazoo Fashion House, where they fulfill their mission of bringing curated vintage fashion to downtown Kalamazoo.

In the second half of the episode, we go to Vintage in the Zoo! You'll hear from Megan and Pat, the husband and wife duo behind this market, as well as many of the vintage sellers at the market. When I visited the city in the winter, I heard so much about Vintage in the Zoo that I knew I had to come check it out.

Pre-Loved Podcast: Destiny's Legendary Closet

Today, I'm joined by George Verger of Destinary's Legendary Closet. George and I met in New York this spring, and we talked about doing an episode together today to kick off Pride Month – George is a queer New Yorker

George Verger is a queer New Yorker, a graduate of FIT with a degree in fashion design, and he has worked in many aspects of the vintage and fashion industries for over ten years. Most recently, he's started his own designer vintage shop, Destiny's Legendary Closet.

Destiny's Legendary Closet explores the notion of nostalgia through the lense of fashion and pop culture. Born out of his cult favorite instagram page, @destinyslegendarychildren (VOGUE wrote about it, link in the shownotes!), which aims to pay homage to the legacy of Queer and Pop culture of the past heavily influenced by music, art, and fashion including the illustrious impact of the queer POC community.

On this episode, we chat about George's history with fashion and style, queer contributions to the backbone of the fashion industry and paying tribute to those who came before, nostalgia and Y2K icons, special vintage pieces – including one of his finds being worn at a Met Gala after party, and so much more!

I hope this conversation is a starting place for you, and that you'll check out some of the other queer vintage fashion icons George mentions in the show – all links will be in the shownotes – as well as events happening during Pride Month.

Big love to George for doing this episode with me and I hope you'll enjoy it! Let's dive right in!

S9 Ep22: PICKLE: Julia O'Mara, co-founder of Pickle, a peer-to-peer fashion rental marketplace - on building the sharing economy for fashion, working with influencers, and raising $12M.23 Jun 202500:53:07

On today's show, we're chatting with Julia O'Mara, the co-founder of Pickle, the peer-to-peer fashion rental marketplace. Pickle's goal is making it easier and more affordable to rent high-quality clothing within communities – on today's episode, Julia will tell you about how she was working in business and product engineering when she had this idea: a gap in the fashion market.

And it led her to build Pickle, a first-of-its kind platform, which – in less than a year – has boomed onto the scene, recirculating 100,000 items, top lenders paying their NYC rent with their Pickle earnings! – and the company raising over 12 million in Series A funding. In Manhattan alone, 1 in 4 females aged 18-35 have used Pickle.

But Pickle had scrappy beginnings, Julia literally ran around NYC doing photoshoots with micro-influencers to get the first closets uploaded.

And, in this episode, you'll hear about the entrepreneurial hustle of this fashion tech founder to watch, and the cultural impact Pickle is having on how young women think about clothing consumption. I think you're gonna love it, so – let's dive right in!

DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE:

  • [3:24] The idea for Pickle started out as a completely different app – a social polling app.
  • [10:39] When Julia knew it was the right time for her career to go the entrepreneurial route.
  • [12:47] The insight that led to Pickle's biggest pivot, in spring 2022.
  • [14:42] Pickle's big differentiator is that it's a peer-to-peer rental marketplace, similar to Uber and AirBnb within the sharing economy.
  • [17:44] When you're building this kind of marketplace, you have to figure out how to attract both lenders and renters.
  • [25:24] How Pickle works as a side hustle for your closet.
  • [35:11] Insights from Pickle's Series A fundraising round, where they raised $12 million and were called the AirBnb of fashion.
  • [41:11] Opening a brick-and-mortar store for closet rental in NYC.
  • [47:33] Future innovations in the circular fashion space, and what's next for Pickle.

I spent two weeks in April in New York, covering both ReFashion Week NYC – New York City's fashion week focused on secondhand, upcycling, and reuse – and the Manhattan Vintage Show – NYC's iconic vintage show featuring the largest collection of clothing, jewelry, accessories and antique textiles in the world.

It was an absolute dream come true to get to be a part of these events – for even more about them, check out the last couple of podcast episodes: I've got one with Alissa of ReFashion Week, Amy Abrams of Manhattan Vintage, AND a LIVE podcast episode we tapped at Dusty Rose Vintage as part of the week's events.

But this week, I'm taking you along for the ride, join me as I attend panels, conduct street style interviews, take in an all pre-loved fashion show, and shop the Manhattan Vintage Market! I can't wait for you to hear – let's dive right in.
