How to Disentangle Yourself in Challenging Relationships30 sept. 202600:32:06

Life inevitably includes both change and loss, as well as sources of steadiness, meaning, and connection that endure. In this talk, I explore how we can meet the tangles of everyday life—difficult interactions, stubborn conflicts, painful patterns, and situations we cannot control—without either withdrawing from what matters or becoming consumed by it.

How to Use Anxiety – and Not Be Used by It!23 sept. 202600:36:59

Sometimes our anxiety is trying to tell us something important about a real threat, something we need to take care of, or someone we love. The trouble comes when anxiety keeps going long after it’s useful, turning into rumination, clinging, and worry about things we can’t control.

This week I focused in on how to find a middle way with anxiety: listening to the useful signals without letting them take over. Listen in to learn ways to work with your anxiety: making room for unavoidable fear, finding realistic reassurance, creating a plan and taking action where you can, loosening the grip of unnecessary worry, and surrendering what is ultimately beyond your control.

5 Ways to Take Things Less Personally16 sept. 202600:44:54

Life is going to bump into us. People will disappoint us, criticize us, misunderstand us, drop the ball, or sometimes genuinely treat us badly. The question is how to deal with all of that without adding a whole extra layer of suffering by taking it so personally.

So this week, I explored how feeling more secure in your own worth, having healthy boundaries, bringing compassion to yourself, loosening your sense of identity, and even finding your way toward love can help you stay grounded when the winds of life start blowing. You can still stand up for yourself, name what’s true, and protect yourself when you need to — while being less reactive, resentful, and knocked around by what other people do.

Why It’s So Hard to Set – and Keep – Healthy Boundaries09 sept. 202600:41:40

Most of us know, at least in principle, that it’s good to have healthy boundaries. The hard part is actually setting them — and then holding onto them when other people push back, get upset, or simply keep doing what they’ve always done.

In this talk, I explored some of what makes boundaries so difficult, including feeling overly responsible for other people, doubting our own perceptions, and getting pulled into trying to change things that really aren’t in our control.

Check it out for some wonderful stories that all point to a basic kind of freedom: knowing what’s yours to deal with, what belongs to someone else, and when it’s time to stop trying to grow roses in a parking lot.

Why Good Boundaries Make Better Relationships02 sept. 202600:45:48

Good boundaries aren’t about pushing people away. In fact, they can help us feel closer, more open, and more at ease with the people we care about. When you know where you stand, what you’re responsible for, and what you’re simply not going to take on, there’s less resentment, confusion, and pressure in a relationship. So that’s what I covered in my talk this week, including how to recognize what’s okay, what’s not, and what is – as I like to put it, NMJ – Not My Job.

Boundaries can be challenging, especially with the people we love, but they can also bring a lot more freedom, peace, and genuine connection into our relationships. Insight – The Power of Seeing Reality Clearly26 août 202600:45:31

This week, I was joined by Melvin McLeod, editor-in-chief of Lion’s Roar and author of The Complete Path of Mindfulness, to explore what mindfulness can become when we see it as much more than a meditation technique.

Melvin and I explored how mindfulness can be a complete path for living with his five essential elements—mindfulness meditation, insight, love and compassion, ethics, and community. These practices can help us see reality more clearly, reduce unnecessary suffering, deepen our connections with others, and live with greater wisdom and care. We also dove into how the enduring insights of Buddhism can be expressed in a secular, accessible way; why insight and self-compassion matter when facing pain and rumination; and how mindfulness can support not only personal transformation, but a more peaceful and compassionate society.

How to Find Peace in the Present Moment19 août 202600:44:43

So much of the mind is leaning into the future—anticipating what will happen, planning what we’ll do, worrying about what could go wrong, and getting attached to how we or other people are supposed to become.

In this talk, I explore what Buddhist wisdom, neuroscience, and even the physics of time can teach us about stepping out of this constant striving and returning to the “front edge of now.”

Patience – Why We Need It, and How to Grow It12 août 202600:30:01

Impatience can be a surprisingly powerful source of stress, frustration, and conflict—especially when we’re waiting for something to change, dealing with difficult people, caring for someone we love, or simply wishing life would move faster.

In this talk, I explore patience not as passive endurance, but as a combination of strength, insight, and an open heart. In the brain, when we become impatient, stimulation and our sense of responsibility for others can keep us agitated. Using patience in practical ways, we can become steadier without becoming indifferent.

Ultimately, patience gives us more freedom: to do what we can, let go of what we can’t control, and remain present and grounded while life unfolds in its own time.

How to Feel That You’ve Done Enough – and Are Enough05 août 202600:42:58

Many of us spend our lives quietly believing we need to do more, achieve more, or become more before we can finally feel at peace. What if the peace you’ve been searching for doesn’t come from becoming more—but from recognizing that, in important ways, you’re already enough? In this talk, I explore how the mind gets caught in endless striving and comparison, and how we can gently train ourselves to rest in gladness, contentment, and the deep sense that we’ve done enough, are enough, and that this moment can be enough too.

How to Stop Ruminating29 juil. 202600:41:40

Even when nothing is particularly wrong, the mind can keep generating something else to want, solve, compare, worry about, or figure out. All that mental activity can be exhausting—and it can keep us from recognizing the contentment and peace that are already available. In this talk, I explore an early Buddhist teaching on papañca—the mind’s tendency to proliferate—and how we can gradually step out of all that chasing.

What feeds a busy mind? Craving, comparison, and getting caught up in views – but we can make a beautiful progression from that to virtue and gladness into joy, tranquility, contentment, and steadiness of mind. And we can help these beneficial states sink into the body and gradually become more lasting traits.

Bows and Vows22 juil. 202600:38:30

Many of us move through life reacting to circumstances without pausing to consider what we’re truly devoted to. When we lose touch with our values and deepest intentions, it’s easy to feel scattered, disconnected, or pulled in directions that don’t reflect who we want to be.

In this talk, I explore the relationship between what we bow toward and what we vow to live by. Practice isn’t just about accepting life as it is—it’s also about intentionally cultivating what is good, true, and meaningful. Together, we’ll reflect on gratitude, refuge, impermanence, and the quiet commitments that shape who we become. What might serve you most as a vow going forward?

The Sweet Power of Kindness, Compassion, and Happiness for Others08 juil. 202600:36:50

We often think of kindness and compassion as gifts we offer other people. But what if they were also among the most powerful ways to heal ourselves?

In this talk, I explore three transformative qualities of the heart—kindness, compassion, and joy for others—and how intentionally cultivating them can reduce suffering, build resilience, and gradually become part of who we are. Along the way, we’ll look at practical ways to bring these qualities into difficult relationships without pretending, bypassing, or sacrificing healthy boundaries.

Positive Emotions as Key Steps in the Path of Awakening01 juil. 202600:44:48

Many of us think of meditation and inner practice as serious, even grim work. But what if joy itself is part of the path? In this talk, I explored four emotionally positive states — gladness, rapture, tranquility, and happiness — that the Buddha himself identified as essential factors on the path to awakening. You’ll learn why these states aren’t distractions from practice but powerful resources for healing, resilience, and lasting inner change.

The Powerful Combination of Concentration and Insight24 juin 202600:39:54

We all know what it’s like to feel scattered, stuck in our own mental loops, unable to actually move through the hard stuff. What the Buddha was pointing to with “right concentration” is that a settled, unified mind isn’t just a nice meditation bonus — it’s the thing that gives your insight real power to cut through.

In this talk, I dig into a remarkable ancient teaching by a nun named Dhammadinnā, exploring how concentration works together with virtue and wisdom to actually move you from suffering toward genuine release. Think of it like pairing a sharp blade with real heft behind it — one without the other just doesn’t get you through the thicket.

Insightful Freedom from Craving17 juin 202600:41:20

Do you ever feel caught up in striving, worrying about how you’re doing, or trying to become a better version of yourself? Keys to Personal and Global Evolution with David Sloan Wilson03 juin 202600:42:29

It’s easy to feel stuck in the same patterns—repeating old reactions, circling in the same thoughts, and wondering why real change is so hard. In this talk, we explore how Darwin’s insights into evolution—variation, selection, and retention—can be applied to your own healing, growing, and awakening. Drawing on both modern science and the deep contemplative traditions of Buddhism, this conversation I had with David Sloan Wilson offers a practical, grounded path for personal transformation—and for building a more compassionate, workable world together.

When Unjust Power Comes at You – and What You Can Do about It29 avr. 202600:32:27

When power comes at us — through authority, intimidation, manipulation, or fear — it can stir old anxiety and self-doubt. So this week I explored how power affects the mind, from personal relationships and childhood conditioning to social hierarchies and authoritarian appeals. We took a look at how greed, hatred, and delusion can corrupt power, how to recognize manipulation and intimidation, and how to reclaim your attention instead of letting fear run the show.

Compassionate Action for Upstream Sources of Suffering01 avr. 202600:41:07

Wise and Courageous Compassion for Others – and Yourself25 mars 202600:42:06

When we’re hurt, frustrated, or facing difficult people, it’s easy to swing between passivity and hostility—either saying nothing and shrinking back, or getting pulled into anger, righteousness, and reactivity.

This week, I explore how to practice a wiser, more courageous form of compassion: one that helps us let go of what burdens the mind, stand up for what matters, and bring both strength and care to other people as well as to ourselves.

The Personal Benefits of Empathy for “Them”18 mars 202600:36:41

When we feel hurt, irritated, or caught in conflict with other people, it’s easy to get stuck in resentment, reactivity, or stress. But empathy is not only something we offer others — it can also be a gift to ourselves. Exploring Radical Helplessness, Radical Trust, and Radical Acceptance11 mars 202600:40:54

Many of us carry a quiet sense of helplessness or not mattering enough to others. Even if our childhood was generally loving, early experiences of vulnerability can leave emotional traces that shape how we react today.

In this talk, I explore how these early patterns can show up as compensation or overreaction in adult life—and how mindfulness helps us see them clearly and loosen their grip.

From there, I invite a deeper exploration: what happens when we stop fighting the vulnerability of being human? What if we practiced living with radical helplessness, radical trust, and radical acceptance?

These three invitations can open the door to a surprising sense of peace, freedom, and grounded presence in a changing and uncertain world.

You Are Whole and Complete, and There Is Nothing to Add04 mars 202600:19:36

Often we move through life feeling like we have to keep improving ourselves—fixing flaws, achieving more, becoming someone “better” before we can finally feel at ease. This teaching turns that assumption upside down by inviting you to experiment with a radical possibility: that you are already whole and complete, with nothing to add. As you softly try on phrases like “I am whole” or “I am complete,” or imagine a wise, loving presence saying them to you, you may notice both the parts that resist and the deeper place that quietly recognizes the truth.

From this view, practice is less about fixing a damaged self and more about uncovering what’s always been here—your inherent goodness and Buddha nature, temporarily covered over by doubt, striving, and the “trance of unworthiness.” When you let these words land in your body like a blessing, you begin to stand outside old scripts that say you’re not enough, and rest instead in a felt sense of being already “good enough to be here.” Over time, this shifts how you relate to yourself, to others (seeing them as whole as well), and even invites you to ask key people in your life to meet you from that same place of basic okayness.

What Matters, and What Doesn’t25 févr. 202600:44:59

In this talk, we explore the profound yet simple distinction between what truly matters in our lives and what is essentially just noise and then reflect on how our brains are naturally wired to fixate on threats and trivialities, often at the expense of our deeper well-being.

Accepting Your Vulnerabilities – Including from Early Childhood18 févr. 202600:33:06

Sometimes we try to open up or soften, but we don’t feel safe enough inside to do it. Our nervous system holds armor — bracing against vulnerability, against the truth that life includes aging, illness, loss, and uncertainty.

This is definitely something I’ve experienced, so this week I explore how to resource yourself first — to feel steady enough to lower your guard — and how vulnerability itself can become a doorway into peace, love, and freedom. When we stop compensating for old wounds and instead welcome our vulnerability with compassion, we discover something deeper that was never wounded at all.

Welcoming the “Messengers” of Aging, Illness, Death – and Awakening11 févr. 202600:41:21

Aging, illness, and death are realities we all live with, even when we try not to think about them. Often, they show up quietly in the background as worry, grief, fear, or a sense of urgency we can’t quite name.

In this talk, I explore a classic Buddhist teaching known as the four heavenly messengers—aging, illness, death, and the possibility of awakening—and how we can relate to them in ways that reduce suffering and support a full, meaningful life.

Five Ways to Feel Less Anxious28 janv. 202600:40:55

When fear and anxiety feel woven into the fabric of everyday life — from global crises to personal health worries — it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, helpless, or stuck in a loop of dread.

So this week I explored how to meet anxiety with mindfulness and compassion, find real refuges that steady the heart, take meaningful action without burning out, and hold life with a wider wisdom perspective.

When we relinquish what no longer serves — harsh self-judgment, false hopes, and unnecessary worry — we can live well, meanwhile, even in a world that can feel profoundly uncertain.

How to Trust Yourself21 janv. 202600:27:34

When you’ve been triggered enough times, it’s easy to start living smaller: avoiding certain conversations, second-guessing yourself, and staying inside an invisible cage that looks like caution but feels like contraction. In this talk, I explore what “trusting yourself” really means—not as bravado or blind confidence, but as an embodied sense that you can stay steady, return to center, and take the next step even in uncertainty. Along the way, we connect this to early conditioning (basic trust/mistrust), to good intentions, and to practical tools for staying grounded when someone tries to pull you into their script.

Good Intentions14 janv. 202600:42:50

When you pause and look honestly at your life, it can be hard to know whether you’re living from what truly matters—or just reacting to the world around you.

So this week, I explored the nature of good intentions, choice, and values. When you clarify what you care about most, it’s easier to live with moral clarity without slipping into self-judgment or ill will, and translate intentions into daily action.

How “Not Knowing” Dissolves Suffering31 déc. 202500:42:46

When we cling to what we “know,” we often suffer — because we narrow our perspective and can get trapped in a cycle of expectations and disappointments. This prevents us from seeing the true nature of our ever-changing reality, as well as the many opportunities around us.

In this talk, I discussed how embracing “not knowing” can help dissolve suffering, releasing us from the shackles of our mind.

Finding a Way Forward through Grief24 déc. 202500:45:33

Grief can feel endless — looping, heavy, and hard to escape — especially when losses can’t be fixed. As we will all experience loss at some point, I thought I’d explore how to grieve without getting stuck. Releasing Anxiety with Three Kinds of Insights26 nov. 202500:48:16

Many of us live inside an “invisible cage” made from old fears, guardedness, and habits of staying small. Anxiety shows up not only in dread and worry, but in all the subtle ways we avoid risks, silence ourselves, or brace for what might go wrong.

So in this talk, I explore how insight — from psychology, somatic work, and early Buddhism — can help you recognize where anxiety really comes from, loosen its grip, and grow a grounded, calm strength inside. Bit by bit, you can expand your inner cage, reclaim your freedom, and meet life with more confidence and ease.

A lot of us feel overwhelmed these days — flooded by other people’s emotions, worn down by the suffering around us, or confused about how to stay open-hearted without burning out. In this week’s teaching, I talk about the real nature of empathy, the sweetness of compassion, and how to stay grounded while engaging with a world that’s hurting. Letting Go of Old Baggage for a Better Future12 nov. 202500:34:42

Appreciating Your Own Generosity and Good Intentions05 nov. 202500:24:25

So often we judge ourselves harshly — reacting quickly, closing off, or staying angry even when we “know better.” But beneath every reaction, even the messy or neurotic ones, is a good intention trying to protect or guide us. How to Prevent and Release Needless Anxiety22 oct. 202500:46:38

Anxiety is a normal human experience — we all feel anxious or afraid sometimes — but excessive or chronic anxiety can wear us down and be detrimental to our long-term happiness and health. Plus, many of us are anxious about things that we don’t actually need to be anxious about.

In this talk, I shared some ideas on how to prevent and release needless anxiety.

Some key points that I covered are:

  • We can feel undisturbed, undefended, and uncontracted in the moment — which is what we meditated on.
  • In order to receive the present moment without fear, we have to recognize that the brain is a prediction machine and can be stuck in predictions, especially regarding fear.
  • The scientific understanding of how the brain generalizes fear, including the biological and neurological mechanisms involved.
  • Strategies for preventing and managing overgeneralized fear, including mindfulness, self-compassion, and self-awareness practices.
