When you think of the films The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline there are probably two of quick thoughts that pop into your head: 1) the films’ iconic, stop-motion animation style and 2) the authors, Tim Burton and Neil Gaiman (respectively), that created those worlds and the characters within them. What may not be readily apparent is that that they are directed by the same visionary director, Henry Selick. Well, after a 13-year hiatus, that same director’s latest spooky stop-motion spectacle, Wendell & Wild, is now available to stream on Netflix. When I heard they were making a movie called The Woman King starring Viola Davis, I figured it had to be a documentary. Viola Davis is undoubtedly the woman king of Hollywood thanks to her Academy Award Winning acting ability, but The Woman King is not a documentary. Instead, Viola Davis co-stars with Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu, and more in the fierce and smashmouth true story of the Agojie warriors. “Based on a true story” movies are always a toss-up. So, I had to check it out to see if it fell into the same formulaic traps as other “based on a true story” films or if it used that powerful blade of Viola Davis’ to carve a new path altogether. The truth is that the live-action remakes are not all bad, some have even been quite good. But the struggle that each of the remakes has to overcome is providing a reason for its existence. So, here we are again. This time, Disney has decided to remake the beloved 1940 animated classic, Pinocchio. I’m not sure if everyone has noticed, but the term “Netflix Movie” is becoming increasingly more common these days. Not only that, but 9 out of 10 times when this term is used, it is used in a derogatory way, like “Hallmark Movie.” Something to keep in mind as, in this week’s episode, we embark on our Day Shift review (it’s a Netflix movie). On paper, this movie has everything you could ask for in an action comedy: vampires, violence, and Jamie Foxx. But as to whether this movie is the start of a new franchise or another tally in the “Netflix movie” column, you’ll have to decide that for yourself. Starring Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, and Brandon Perea, NOPE follows Hollywood horse trainers, the Haywoods, as they deal with an extraterrestrial phenomenon on their family’s ranch. Like its predecessors in Jordan Peele’s filmography, Get Out and Us, this film has a deadly left hook and a sharp social commentary. Thor Love and Thunder marks the first time an MCU character has reached four solo films. Thor is the only remaining member of the original Avengers to still be creating solo films so, in a way, this is uncharted territory for Marvel Studios. Picking up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor Love and Thunder sets out to answer the question “what’s left for Thor to do?” With his story arc seemingly fulfilled at the end of endgame and most people expecting Chris Hemsworth to walk away from the role, this movie certainly has a decent amount of storytelling to do. With Taika Waititi back at the helm after the success of Thor: Ragnarok, Natalie Portman returning to reprise her role as Dr. Jane Foster (and then some), and the massive addition of Academy Award Winner Christian Bale as Gorr, Thor Love and Thunder is no doubt reaching for the stars, but did the movie succeed? For the first time ever, we got a completely new take on the beloved character Buzz Lightyear in Disney and Pixar’s ‘Lightyear.’ This Buzz really is the Buzz Lightyear, the super space ranger that inspired Andy way back in 1995 to ask for a Buzz Lightyear action figure (and the sheets and curtains to go with it). It’s a bold though somewhat obvious idea for a Toy Story spin-off but none of that matters unless the movie is a home run. In this Lightyear review, we get into all of the details including how it ties back to the original Toy Story series and whether or not this should be considered a success both as a film and a business decision for Disney.

After what felt like the longest episode hiatus in PFB history, we are back and back in a big way with a new movie review. The reason this occasion is so momentous: it is the first time in PFB history that we are reviewing a sequel in a film franchise where we have already reviewed the first film on the podcast. This week’s film is Sonic the Hedgehog 2! Way back in February of 2020, before we knew what horrors awaited us, we reviewed Sonic the Hedgehog and we did not think kindly of that film. Could Sonic the Hedgehog 2 do the impossible and right the ship in the sequel? You’ll just have to listen to find out!
