| Baby, What's Going On with Justin Bieber? | 10 Jul 2025 | 00:47:16 | |
This week Shauna and Olivia dish some celebrity goss and figure out their weekend plans - they are true multi-taskers! Then it's on to the main topic - What's happening with Justin Bieber? The singer, who became mega-famous at a very early age, recently posted a candid message to Instagram that said "Don't you think if I could have fixed myself I would have already?" The Junkies take a look back at the rocky road that Bieber has traveled since becoming a viral sensation in 2009. From his celebrity connections, including Diddy, to finding religion, his marriage to Hailey Baldwin, to his struggles with his health and the paparazzi, Justin has been through a lot. The Junkies then advise the seemingly exhausted Bieber to slow down, take some time out of the spotlight, and for the love of Vanilla Ice, to please not release that rap album he's been talking about. | Get Your Fix: Live at Phoenix Fan Fusion | 02 Jun 2022 | 00:51:31
This week, Shauna, Hayley and Nicole host the show live from Phoenix Fan Fusion, the comic and pop culture convention that returned this year after a two year hiatus. Hayley and Shauna tell the audience about all the good geeky stuff premiering this week, like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Stranger Things, then welcome special guests to the stage. First up is Hecate, a cosplayer, model and influencer who talks about her favorite cons and how the design process for her looks. Then David Boyles from Drag Story Hour Arizona tells us about his group’s mission to bring inclusive story times to children and their grown-ups in Arizona, inspiring kids to be themselves (and annoying the occasional bigot). Finally, we are joined by Meghan from the Phoenix chapter of Very Awesome Girls Into Nerdy Activities, a group for geek girls and those who identify as girls. Very Awesome Girls use their nerdy superpowers for good by volunteering at community events and crafting geeking items for fundraisers. Finally, The Junkies talk about their OTPs, because everybody has at least one. Thank you to Ashleigh Feiring and Phoenix Fan Fusion for inviting us this year! This week, the Junkies welcome special guests Steve Romanko and Turner Van Ryn of 13th Generation Productions, who are producing a new animated TV show called The Dragons of Melgor, which they describe as “an animated science fiction adventure that is grounded in our flesh and blood world.” Steve and Turner talk about getting inspiration for their show from old-school Battlestar Galactica, and talk about the creative process with all its ups and downs. Steve and Turner explain exactly what “in development” means, talk about working at Lucasfilm, wearing the same watch as Robert Redford, and what it feels like to literally run into Leonard Nimoy. | Samuel L. Jackson 101: Snakes on a Plane | 19 May 2022 | 00:49:29
This week, The Junkies continue their in-depth look into beloved actor Samuel L. Jackson’s most iconic roles by watching the legendarily goofy (but not Sharknado goofy) Snakes on a Plane. Is it a comedy? An action-adventure? A romance? It’s really a combination of the three, with bad special effects and a Cobra Starship video thrown in to boot. The Junkies confess what creatures they’d be afraid to be trapped on a plane with, from geckos to…butterflies(?), and wonder how they would die if they were trapped with those monkey-fighting snakes on that Monday-to-Friday plane. Then they enjoy some 2006 technology (phones that are also cameras?!), discuss the movie’s best kill scenes, and act out the scene where Kenan Thompson’s character saves the day with his Playstation prowess. You can prepare for the next class by watching Samuel L. Jackson in Coach Carter. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | Cocaine in Brazil with Brad Perry (Part 2) | 16 May 2022 | 00:43:59
The Junkies are back with part two of their interview with Brad Perry, a legend in the Phoenix, Chicago and San Diego TV markets. Brad dishes on working with a couple actors the Junkies are very familiar with. Alex makes a case for Keanu Reeves’ acting chops, but Brad isn’t having it, and then Brad and Shauna go over the rules of a Samuel L. Jackson drinking game. Hayley gets Brad to divulge more celebrity shenanigans, and he regales us with tales of getting drunk with Dennis Rodman, hitting Las Vegas with Bon Jovi, and deciding whether to get into a helicopter with Bruce Springsteen in Brazil. (And so much more!) Then, Brad takes over to interview The Junkies on the future of pop culture and Nicole makes a case for the short attention span generation’s fascination with Tik-Tok. Are we about to see the end of long-form, serious content? Not as long as this podcast exists! Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | Deep Dish with Brad Perry (Part 1) | 12 May 2022 | 00:41:37
This week The Junkies interview Brad Perry, a legend in the Phoenix television market (and elsewhere). Though Brad has conquered almost every kind of media, this is his very first podcast appearance. Brad is currently the host of the Arizona Daily Mix on KAZT, but got his start at Second City in Chicago, doubled for Damon Wayans (among other film jobs), and has headlined morning shows in San Diego as well as Phoenix. Nicole gets Brad to name his favorite Chicago-style pizzeria, and Hayley encourages him to name names about his best and worst celebrity experiences. The Junkies had so much fun talking to Brad that we had to break the conversation into two shows. Look for part two to drop in a few days. | Samuel L. Jackson 101: Shaft | 05 May 2022 | 00:38:24
Who’s the black private dick that’s a sex machine to all the chicks? Obviously, it’s Shaft, aka Law and Order SVU: The Movie. The second lesson in Samuel L. Jackson 101 is the beloved actor’s embodiment of the classic detective character originated by Richard Roundree in 1971. The Junkies look at Jackson’s take on the character, from his persona, his charisma and his collection of black leather coats. And they look at the movie’s bad guys, from the charming yet inexplicably Dominican Jeffrey Wright as Peoples, and Christian Bale (basically playing Patrick Bateman again) as the very punchable Walter Wade Jr. Then the Junkies fancast a 2022 Shaft TV series (with roles for themselves!) and rate the movie and Jackson’s performance, comparing both to Pulp Fiction in a way that might surprise you. You can prepare for the next class by watching Samuel L. Jackson in Snakes on a Plane. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | Say Cheese | 28 Apr 2022 | 00:58:36
Things get all little cheesy on the show this week, as in love of Mozzarella, Colby Jack, or Bleu cheese (but not Swiss), before the Junkies talk about their latest pop culture obsessions. Shauna is digging Moon Knight and the enduring mystery of Is It Cake?, while Alex is bingeing one of the year’s most lauded new shows, Abbott Elementary, and finally took in The Batman. Nicole talks about an awesome solo adventure at a Billie Eilish concert and a less than awesome White Sox season, and Hayley reports on the latest movies in the Sonic and Fantastic Beasts franchises. Then it’s on to speculation about the upcoming Doctor Strange movie, and then The Junkies must battle each other in a trivia challenge to warm them up for their Pop Culture Jeopardy panel at Phoenix Fan Fusion. Who will be the victors? Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | Samuel L. Jackson 101: Pulp Fiction | 21 Apr 2022 | 01:04:26
Now that the class on Keanu Reeves is concluded, it’s time to move on to our next subject: Samuel L. Jackson. This week, The Junkies go deep into one of the beloved actor’s most iconic roles: that of spiritual hitman Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Sure, this movie is the source of numerous memes, but more than that, it’s a surprisingly deep look at revenge, redemption, and Royales with cheese. The Junkies discuss the use of language, drug use and casual violence in the movie, and how those same characters in the movie also have philosophical conversations about everything from foot massages to miracles. After that, The Junkies try to figure out what’s in the briefcase, fancast a modern remake of the movie with Zac Efron or Robert Pattinson (one of those guys), and try to guess what the L stands for in Samuel L. Jackson. Hint: it’s not Love. Don’t be a rectangle – listen now! You can get ready for the next class by watching Samuel L. Jackson in Shaft (2000). | KEANU 101: Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure | 14 Apr 2022 | 00:42:31
Who doesn’t love Keanu Reeves? No one, that’s who. This week the Junkies continue their semi-regular feature looking into some of pop culture’s most important films from one of its most beloved stars. Our final Keanu 101 lesson is on the movie that is one of his first: Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Starring an extremely young Keanu along with Alex Winter, this movie gives a pair of himbos a time machine and sets them loose in history. Excellent! The Junkies talk about how well the movie holds up today (spoiler: it could be better) and wonder if it’s possible to have a metal band with just two guitarists. Though the movie is set in San Dimas, California, it was shot here in Phoenix and some of the Junkies’ favorite places. Strange things are afoot on the podcast this week, so crank up the Wyld Stallyns and enjoy this last adventure with Keanu. You can get ready for our next 101 lesson by watching Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | KEANU 101: Point Break | 07 Apr 2022 | 00:49:04
Who doesn’t love Keanu Reeves? No one, that’s who. This week the Junkies continue their semi-regular feature looking into some of pop culture’s most important films from one of its most beloved stars. This week’s lesson is on the movie that proved Keanu was bankable as an action movie star. In Point Break, Keanu stars as an FBI agent, improbably named Johnny Utah, who infiltrates a gang of bank-robbing surf punks led by Bodhi, played by gloriously blond skydiving fanatic Patrick Swayze. The Junkies discuss this unlikely adventure, from Johnny’s moonlit surf date with Lori Petty, to being partnered with a “diet cocaine” Gary Busey, to Keanu getting beat up by both a naked lady and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, to imagining the alternate universe in which Willem Dafoe and his pornstache was cast as Johnny. You can plan for our next Keanu 101 lesson by watching Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Of course. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | PCJ Book Club: 'Sunrise on the Reaping' by Suzanne Collins | 01 May 2025 | 00:54:41
Olivia and Shauna take a deep dive into Suzanne Collins' new book Sunrise on the Reaping. Set before the events of her Hunger Games trilogy, Sunrise on the Reaping is the story of young Haymitch Abernathy. The Junkies look at the book's origins, the philosophers who inspired the author, and how its themes of resistance, individual agency, controlling the narrative, and the use of propaganda inform the author's message. There will be some spoilers in the second segment of the show, if you haven't read the book. Olivia and Shauna also discuss who is rumored to star in the movie based on the book - and who should be cast instead.Follow Shauna Trinidad and Olivia Rodi on GoodReads and find out what else they are reading now! | The Year The Oscars® Slapped | 31 Mar 2022 | 00:56:14
This week the Junkies take on the big story from this year’s Academy Awards® presentation: How Apple TV+ was the first streaming service to produce a Best Picture winner. Oh, and whatever else happened. But first, it’s time to talk what was poppin’ this week; Alex loved the wild, arty weirdness of Atlanta, while Shauna loved the allegorical Turning Red. Nicole is all about The Afterparty, while Hayley celebrates the historical romantic gay pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death. Then the Junkies talk about the Oscars®, including the Will Smith incident that overshadowed almost everything else that happened, but really, really shouldn’t have. | Con Job with Ashleigh Feiring | 24 Mar 2022 | 00:57:03
Ashleigh Feiring, a Producer of the Phoenix Fan Fusion convention, joins the Junkies this week to talk about her role at the event, which takes place from May 27th through the 29th at the Phoenix Convention Center. Ashleigh is pals with Shauna and, like Hayley, both are very much into cosplay. (Will they talk Nicole and Alex into doing their first cosplays?) Ashleigh and the Junkies talk about favorite con moments, celebrity encounters, the best and worst of con food, and how first-timers can best enjoy the convention. Then it’s time to catch up on what’s been happening outside the world of Keanu Reeves movies, so the Junkies discuss everything from anime to rom-coms to Ted Lasso to the new fresh prince in Bel Air. Don’t risk a case of FOMO: put on your Harley Quinn drag and join us at Phoenix Fan Fusion this May. | KEANU 101: Speed | 17 Mar 2022 | 00:41:37
Who doesn’t love Keanu Reeves? No one, that’s who. This week the Junkies continue their semi-regular feature looking into some of pop culture’s most important films from one of its most beloved stars. This week’s lesson is on the movie that first brought us the undeniable chemistry of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock: Speed, aka “The Bus that Couldn’t Slow Down.” The Junkies discuss Keanu’s performance and appearance (yes, we’re that shallow) and rate the other actors by how sad they’d be if they got thrown under the bus. The Junkies also talk about the cool stunts in the movie, and how the Fast and the Furious crew might deal with a bus jumping over a very large gap in the I-105. You can plan for our next Keanu 101 lesson by watching Point Break. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | Entertain Me | 10 Mar 2022 | 00:34:59
The #QuadSquad (Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna) celebrate the Third Season Premiere of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast by talking about all those shows that didn’t make it past season two. Looking at you, Joan of Arcadia! Seriously, though, why did shows like Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Lizzie McGuire and The Munsters only get two seasons, while Grey’s Anatomy carries on year after year like some mythically unkillable behemoth? That question may never be answered, but The Junkies won’t stop trying to solve that mystery. With a new season comes a new look and a new sound, and you can hear our new theme song and see how The Junkies feel about it as they too hear it for the very first time. Thanks to Matthew Merys https://www.instagram.com/idrawpaintings/ for the fantastic new cover art and Ryan Whyte Maloney https://www.instagram.com/ryanwhytemaloney/ for composing our rockin’ new theme song. | KEANU 101: John Wick | 24 Feb 2022 | 00:57:16
Who doesn’t love Keanu Reeves? No one, that’s who. This week the Junkies continue their semi-regular feature looking into some of pop culture’s most important films from one of its most beloved stars. This week’s lesson is on the first chapter of Reeves’ dog-loving hitman trilogy, John Wick. Though the movie has the thinnest of plots, it heavies up on meticulously choreographed action sequences and Reeves does most of his own stunts. But is it a good movie? The Junkies weigh this and other questions, like does Theon Greyjoy from Game of Thrones make a good villain? Would a Jessica Wick series be as popular? How does John Wick rate against other action heroes and anti-heroes? Can we get Brendan Fraser and The Rock to join Keanu for John Wick 4? And do you say “Tomatometer” or “Tomameter?” You can plan for our next Keanu 101 lesson by watching Speed. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | Murderman Is Coming with Avery Xola | 17 Feb 2022 | 00:44:58
Alex, Shauna and Nicole welcome special guest Avery Xola, an Arizona native who is the author of the Murderman graphic novel series, a “punk rock project” which has everything: sex, shots, peeling skin, cyborgs and rock and roll. Avery tells the Junkies about how his writing has been influenced by everything from Robo-Cop, Muppet Babies and Final Destination, (among other classic stories), and talks about the artistic process, building a supportive community, representation, and how taking your dreams seriously is both possible and vital. | KEANU 101: The Lake House | 10 Feb 2022 | 00:51:40
Who doesn’t love Keanu Reeves? No one, that’s who. This week the Junkies continue a semi-regular feature looking into some of pop culture’s most important films from one of its most beloved stars. Our second lesson is on time travel/romance The Lake House. Based on the Korean film Il Mare, The Lake House reteams Reeves with one of his most charismatic co-stars, the shag-mulleted Sandra Bullock. Reeves and Bullock play would-be lovers Alex and Kate, who live in the same house but two years apart, their only connection an enchanted mailbox through which the two exchange love letters. The Junkies talk rom-com and time travel tropes, imagine if the movie was rebooted to take place in 2018, when going two years into the future would really be shocking, and determine which of today’s stars have the same chemistry as Keanu and Sandra. And finally, are rom-coms dead in 2022? Plan for our next Keanu 101 lesson by watching John Wick. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | Fans Ruin Everything | 03 Feb 2022 | 01:00:05
Joey, Banana, Splash and Hayley the Brave and Strong (aka the Pop Culture Junkies) talk about their nicknames and how they got them. In other news, January is finally over (!) and the Junkies are looking forward to a new month full of new beginnings. It’s Black History Month, and Alex and Hayley discuss the best shows and movies to watch now and all of the time. Nicole starts the Pop Culture Junkie Book Club, and Shauna gives How I Met Your Father a resounding “meh”. Then it’s on to news, including Tom Brady’s retirement, Khloe Kardashian’s chicken hands, and Joe Rogan’s apology after his podcast caused a lot of artists to pull their music off Spotify in protest. Then the Junkies talk about fan service, fan-casting and fan fiction, and who would be the ‘ship in Pop Culture Junkie fanfic. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | KEANU 101: The Replacements | 27 Jan 2022 | 00:49:49
Who doesn’t love Keanu Reeves? No one, that’s who. This week the Junkies start a semi-regular feature looking into some of pop culture’s most important films from one of its most beloved stars. Our first subject is the fluffy football comedy The Replacements. Based (loosely) on real-life events, The Replacements is the story of a pro football team that hired scab players to play when the regular team went on strike. Alex, Hayley and Nicole discuss the plot, plot holes, cast and examine the best scenes and how the director handles sports movie tropes. Then the Junkies fancast a modern-day remake of the movie. Who will they pick to play 2022 Keanu? Enjoy the calming effects of a Keanu Reeves movie this week, and get ready for our next Keanu 101 lesson by watching The Lake House. | PCJ Pop #1 | 22 Apr 2025 | 00:08:35
In PCJ Pops, the Pop Culture Junkies share their recommendations on what to experience in pop culture, today and yesterday. In this episode, Olivia continues her 2024 binge read with Spiral by Bal Khabra (among others!) and anime fan Shauna finally watches the 1988 film Akira. Watch the full video version up to one week early on Patreon: patreon.com/PopCultureJunkiePodcast
| Big Mullet Energy | 20 Jan 2022 | 00:54:35 | |
The Junkies look at the phenomenon of hate-watching this week; Alex watches Jersey Shore just to complain about it to his brother, who’s a fan; Nicole’s dad holds her hostage in front of Two and a Half Men, Hayley watches 911 just to see characters catch on fire, Shauna thinks And Just Like That is so bad it actually became watchable, and everyone has a love-hate relationship with social media. Then it’s on to what’s happening this week: Peacemaker is like The Boys, only more ridiculous, the second season of Cheer is still mired in controversy, Joe Jonas does not show his junk in The Righteous Gemstones, and everyone’s excited about new show Moon Knight, a sexy British mummy with a hood, or something like that. Also: Tom Ellis is getting really buff, so that can only mean one thing, and the Junkies talk about celebrity beefs, like Pete and Ye, the Spears sisters, Elmo and a Pet Rock, and Joss Whedon and…well, everyone. The Junkies take the Ten Year Challenge and decide what Pop Culture rocked back in 2012 and what needs to survive until the year 2032. Then Alex, Nicole, Hayley and Shauna move on to the Pop Culture of 2022, including (spoilers!) the finale of Dexter, the merits of Cobra Kai, aka Riverdale with Karate, and whatever the heck was going on in Netflix’s Don’t Look Up. Then the Junkies pay tribute to Bob Saget, who touched our lives in so many ways, and the late, great Sidney Poiter, before talking about selling jars of farts. For real. | So Much Happening At Once! | 06 Jan 2022 | 00:31:02
Alex and Nicole make their Pop Culture resolutions for 2022…will they keep up with them? Time will tell! The year may have changed, but we are still popping here at PCJ. Alex hypes 60 Days In and Ron’s Gone Wrong, and he will convince you to subscribe to PBS Documentaries, and Nicole is taking the Ultimate Girls Trip with the Real Housewives of Everywhere. Then the Junkies celebrate the life of Betty White, the topless quitting style of Antonio Brown, the topless perseverance of Miley Cyrus, and the drunken New Year’s Eve ramblings of Andy Cohen. It’s only the first week of 2022, but there’s so much…well, the title says it all. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | We Love 2018 & 2019 | 16 Dec 2021 | 00:43:39
The 2010s…what a decade, right? There were good times, probably, and bad times too, and pop culture was there to get us through it all. The Pop Culture Junkie Podcast is looking back at the halcyon days between 2010 and 2019 with a five-part series we’re calling We Love the 2010s. This week, Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna finish out the decade with a look at the years 2018 and 2019. In 2018, when we weren’t eating Tide Pods, we were arguing whether we heard “Yanny” or “Laurel”. It was the year of Childish Gambino, Cobra Kai and Crazy Rich Asians, We said “Thank U, Next” to Drake memes, changing Stephen Crowder’s mind and self-driving cars, but we loved The Haunting of Hill House, Bohemian Rhapsody and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and saying “Wakanda Forever!” 2019 was the (merciful) end of the decade, and in the final year of the 2010s, we learned that “Midsommar” could be a verb, Cats could have boobs (and buttholes!), Aunt Becky from Full House would do anything to get her kids into a good school, and Sonic the Hedgehog had human teeth. Shudder. Other things sparked joy, like a Real Housewife arguing with a cat, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X and Baby Yoda from The Mandalorian. And before you could say “Ok, Boomer,” the decade was over. | We Love 2016 & 2017 | 09 Dec 2021 | 00:55:54
The 2010s…what a decade, right? There were good times, probably, and bad times too, and pop culture was there to get us through it all. The Pop Culture Junkie Podcast is looking back at the halcyon days between 2010 and 2019 with a five-part series we’re calling We Love the 2010s. This week, Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna take a look at the years 2016 and 2017. 2016 was all about Stranger Things, like Baby Shark and Becky with the Good Hair, Pokémon Go and Girl Ghostbusters, clown sightings and perhaps strangest of all, the Chicago Cubs finally won the World Series. We went to La La Land and Couldn’t Stop the Feeling, and one movie tried to make us decide between Batman and Superman (and we chose neither.) And finally, it was the year we all said RIP to Harambe… and an unreal number of beloved celebrities. 2017 brought us the tragic (for billionaires) Fyre Festival, gender reveal fires, and fidget spinners; Wonder Woman made us cheer on the big screen (finally) while The Handmaid’s Tale on the small screen had us panicking; we devoured TikTok, learned Spanish to sing ‘Despacito’, and while TV show revivals were all the rage, the film Get Out was as original as it was terrifying. The 2010s…what a decade, right? There were good times, probably, and bad times too, and pop culture was there to get us through it all. The Pop Culture Junkie Podcast is looking back at the halcyon days between 2010 and 2019 with a five-part series we’re calling We Love the 2010s. This week, Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna take a look at the years 2014 and 2015. 2014 was the year of Gone Girl power: we were ‘All About that Bass’ and took a trip to Broad City; Sony got hacked and so did Apple, leading to some TMI leaks; this is the year we met Adele Dazeem, John Wick, and that hot mugshot guy, and couples who just met ended up married for a reality TV show; and finally this is the year we said “Hands up; don’t shoot” and ‘Turn Down for What’? In 2015, the Force Awakened, and it apparently ruined a lot of childhoods; Hamilton! turned dry American history into Broadway gold; there was a shakeup in late night talk, and one left-hand shark had us all awkwardly dancing. Fifty Shades of Grey (the movie) had us awkwardly admitting we wanted to see it, and we were either Netflix and Chilling or Whipping and Nae Naeing. And finally, one picture of a dress had everyone questioning how differently we all could perceive the world. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. The 2010s…what a decade, right? There were good times, probably, and bad times too, and pop culture was there to get us through it all. The Pop Culture Junkie Podcast is looking back at the halcyon days between 2010 and 2019 with a five-part series we’re calling We Love the 2010s. This week, Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna take a look at the years 2012 and 2013. 2012 was the year of natural disasters like Sharknado, the end of the world as we know it, and Honey Boo Boo, the 50 Shades of Grey book and “Gangnam Style”, Magic Mike and “Call Me Maybe” and so much more. And 2013 had us twerking and doing the Harlem Shake, listening to Lorde and “Blurred Lines,” and wondering what does that stupid fox really say? We will feature the Marvel Minute and the Year of Our Lady Gaga for each year of the decade, too. Join us for a look back at everything that made life worth living (or at least, worth talking about) in the 2010s. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | We Love 2010 & 2011 | 18 Nov 2021 | 00:40:39
The 2010s…what a decade, right? There were good times, probably, and bad times too, and pop culture was there to get us through it all. The Pop Culture Junkie Podcast is looking back at the halcyon days between 2010 and 2019 with a five-part series we’re calling We Love the 2010s. This week, Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna take a look at the years 2010 and 2011. 2010 was the year of Inception, iPads and Instagram, Bieber, bromance and Bitcoin, cougars, mansplaining, The Walking Dead, Silly Bandz and so much more. And 2011 brought us planking, Funko Pops and #YOLO, Bronies, ghosting and Game of Thrones, and “winning” at life with Tiger’s Blood. | Cats, Canines, Killer Whales and Other Pop Culture Creatures | 17 Apr 2025 | 00:44:05
This week, the Junkies talk about the best pets in pop culture: the goodest boys, the bestest girls, the finest...fish? Whether furry, feathery or finned, animal characters in the media are often the most lovable and memorable. Shauna and Olivia discuss what makes a great on-screen critter. Cats, dogs or other? Animated or animatronic? Talking or mute? They list their favorites, including Garfield, who happens to both Junkies' spirit animal, and the pets they definitely wouldn't cuddle with, ever. The discussion then moves to famous real-life pets, and scandals like Lady Gaga's purloined pooches and the Kardashians' disappearing doggos. Ruh-roh! | Who You Gonna Call? with Jeff Lewis | 11 Nov 2021 | 00:58:58
In honor of the impending release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Junkies welcome a real-life Ghostbuster to the show! Jeff Lewis of the Arizona Ghostbusters, a 501c(3) registered charity, joins the gang to talk about his lifelong love of busting ghosts and the stellar community work his organization does statewide. When not talking about proton packs or the Ecto-fleet, Jeff and the Junkies discuss what to pop or drop this week. Nicole is a Yellowstone convert, while Shauna surprises everyone by not liking the sex scene in Eternals, Hayley recommends Love Hard, which is a holiday rom-com, despite what the raunchy title suggests, and Alex is digging Idris Elba in The Harder They Fall, because…who wouldn’t? And our new friend Jeff sticks with the supernatural and reps What We Do in the Shadows in general and Matt Berry in particular. We ain’t afraid of no ghosts – not this week, anyway. | The Mysterious Appeal of Pete Davidson | 04 Nov 2021 | 00:38:17
Saturday Night Live’s squirrely Pete Davidson is not only captivating Kardashians; one of the Junkies finds him oddly alluring too. After debating the ubiquity of Christmas music before Halloween is even over, Alex dishes on Facebook’s new Metaverse, which could send you back in time via a picture you were tagged in circa 2010. Shauna and Hayley are tentatively popping Ghosts (it’s not as weird as it sounds) and Nicole has all the Dutch Slut news. All that, plus the best in movies, television, music and even books this week. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | The Kings and Queens of Halloween with Greg Sestero | 28 Oct 2021 | 01:07:37
We celebrate Spooky Season this week with a double-stuffed episode full of tricks and treats. The Junkies remember the costumes of Halloween past, and find out Hayley and Nicole each dressed up as sultry Sandy from Grease, and both Alex and Shauna discovered slutty costumes once they got to college. Then we say “Oh, hai Greg!” as Shauna interviews actor, writer, filmmaker and all-around awesome nice guy Greg Sestero. Greg talks about acting with Tommy Wiseau in the legendary so-bad-it’s-good movie The Room, his book The Disaster Artist (and watching Dave Franco play him in the film based on the book) and his cool new horror flick Miracle Valley, filmed near our home base here in Arizona. (There’s so much more!) Then the Junkies put their Horror Movie Franchise knowledge to the ultimate test. Who will be crowned the King or Queen of Halloween? Grab your bag of treats and find out! Follow @GregSestero on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to find out where you can see Miracle Valley! Shout out to friend of the Pod Lauren Knight at the Majestic Theaters in Phoenix for all of your help this week! Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. | Alien Relationships | 21 Oct 2021 | 00:53:08
The Junkies confess to car karaoke on this week’s episode, so give Nicole a nod if you ever pull up next to her while she’s in Billie mode. Hayley and Shauna were popping live shows this week, and Alex freaks everyone out with his Chucky impression. Then it’s on to the news, and the Junkies cover everything from the silly (Megan Fox’s fanfiction romance with Machine Gun Kelly), to the sporty (Chicago Sky picks up a WNBA championship!) to the spacy (Captain Kirk’s rocket ride) to the serious (the controversy over Dave Chappelle’s Netflix special). They also cover a lot of DC’s FanDome. If you’ve ever wondered why no one decapitates horror movie villains, this is the one for you. | Live From Be My Secret Cars And Anime Con | 14 Oct 2021 | 00:43:55
The Pop Culture Junkies recorded this episode live at the Be My Secret Cars and Anime Con on October 9th at Rawhide Events Center in Chandler. While Shauna and Hayley are very familiar with cons and cosplaying, this was a first for Alex and Nicole. Experienced or not though, everyone had a great time. For this episode, The Junkies welcomed incredible guests like cosplayer Alina Masquerade, Brittany Saint Leafy from Mordhau Historical Combat martial arts school, and duct tape artist Micah E. | On My Way To PHX with Whitney Peyton | 07 Oct 2021 | 00:52:05
The Junkies welcome very special guest Whitney Peyton, so this episode is all about music. Whitney is a headlining rap artist, songwriter and all-around content creator (she makes her motion picture debut this month!) who hails from Philadelphia and is now based in Phoenix. Whitney chats with Hayley, Shauna, Alex and Nicole about her music and her influences, tells touring stories, and even confesses to seeing Nickelback in concert. Whoa. Then Whitney and the Junkies list the up and coming acts you need to get familiar with now, like Rittz, Chayce Beckham, Tate Mcrae, First and Forever, The Strike, Kanga, Ramsey, Frank Munro and Emanle Ali. We’ll include a link to a spotify playlist in our Facebook support group so you can check out Whitney’s music as well as the ones suggested by the Junkies. The Junkies are shooting up a lot of pop culture this week, and it’s all for your benefit. Alex makes the acquaintance of little-known models Cindy Crawford and Gigi Hadid, while Hayley and Nicole celebrate the return of smokin’ hot daddy Chris Meloni (along with the various Laws and Orders) this week. Then the Junkies celebrate the new direction R. Kelly will be taking, try to make sense of the Pinkett-Smith marriage, and fret about what an IATSE strike will mean for fans of pop culture, aka all of us. Prepare to be scandalized as The Junkies confess their childhood transgressions: Hayley’s deception, Alex’s trespassing, and Shauna’s illicit snogging absolutely pale in comparison to the lengths Nicole went to for a first grade birthday party. The Junkies break down the Emmy Awards (not the ceremony, which no one watches anymore), but the entertaining moments from Conan, Seth Rogan, Michaela Coel and more. Speaking of moments, this week, some pop culture sparked joy, like Jojo Siwa, Montero, Brooklyn 99 and Charlamagne Tha God, while some sparked confusion, namely Topher Grace’s dentures, inedible vegan shoes, the narrative in What If…? and Shauna’s Yogi Bear impersonation. Which late night hosts do the Junkies want to kiss, marry and kill? You might be surprised by their answers, and by the fact that only one Junkie wants to take out notorious car-humper James Corden. Shauna does her best to not spoil Shang-Chi for Alex, and he returns the favor by not ruining the start of Lucifer‘s final season for her. Hayley is pumped for Hawkeye, Christmas and a year’s worth of Marvel content (#blessed) and Nicole sells us all on The Morning Show – and Apple TV+. We hope she’s getting a commission. Then we discuss high fashion, specifically the best (Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish) and worst (Cara Delevingne, A$AP Rocky) from the red carpet at the Met Gala. Fashion babies, this one’s for you. The Junkies welcome super-special guest Lauren Knight, Stallone Enthusiast (oh, and the Film and Events Programmer for Majestic Theaters, Phoenix) and they use their powers to erase their least favorite films from existence. Sorry, fan(s) of The Love Guru. Lauren tells everyone of the exciting new programs coming to the Majestic Theaters, formerly the Alamo Drafthouse. Then the Junkies start popping the best things to watch this week. Alex clues everyone in to See, the Jason Momoa show no one knows about. Shauna and Lauren bond over Sly’s ridiculous 1993 film Demolition Man, and Hayley reps Only Murders in the Building and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Finally, Nicole is down for that show everyone’s mom loves, Yellowstone, and Lauren hypes Vivo and Reservation Dogs. | Living in the Simulation | 03 Apr 2025 | 00:54:42
Olivia and Shauna get pixelated this week with a look at The Sims, the long running game that allows - even encourages - murder and other virtual, victimless vices. They delve into the game lore, highlighting the oddball characters that appear in every version of the game, and discuss the various ways they make the game their own. The Junkies also talk about the Sims movie being produced by Margot Robbie, and answer the important question: does playing the Sims make us akin to the Old Testament God, or are we all in a simulation with a supreme being programming our actions for their own amusement somewhere? Or is it both? You can watch the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast on YouTube! Click here: https://www.youtube.com/@popculturejunkiepod/videos We have all new Patreon tiers! | Sex, Drugs and Mistakes | 02 Sep 2021 | 00:46:01
The conversation is so good in this episode that the Junkies consider starting a podcast. They start by talking about TV shows with banging theme songs, which of course leads to a discussion of twerking to the Law and Order: SVU opening music. After that, things get weird. James Corden-humping-cars weird. Alex recommends Vacation Friends with benefits, Shauna is still catching up on classic vampire flicks like the ridiculously homoerotic Interview with the Vampire, and Hayley counters with another “vampire” movie, spontaneously creating a Twilight drinking game. Finally, concerts are back, so watch out for lame opening acts, hairy nipples, and always, always avoid unwanted Marilyn Manson appearances. | A Very Nerdy Proposal | 26 Aug 2021 | 00:43:31
The Junkies pop, drop and roll their way through the week in pop culture. Reminiscence puts Hayley to sleep, while the Paw Patrol Movie is on point. Nicole is drawn into Rampage, not so much for The Rock as for her beloved Chicago. Alex pops Lin-Manuel Miranda’s music in Vivo, a new animated musical that is very Coco-meets-Soul, and Shauna is iffy on The White Lotus, and not just because of the genitals. Then the Junkies break down that Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer we’ve been dying to see. Doctor Strange is acting…strange, the Sinister Six is hidden in the Easter eggs, and Peter Parker has a Hannah Montana moment and we are here for all of it. Also this week: scandal behind the scenes at Jeopardy and the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and the continued illusion that Kanye West is going to release his new album soon. | The 'F' Is for Fangirl | 19 Aug 2021 | 00:46:54
Nicole offers to manifest good things for all the Junkies, because that how she rolls. Shauna’s getting back her $200, Hayley will get to see Benson and Stabler (finally) make out, and Alex will always have dry pants. The Junkies also discuss James Gunn’s crazy direction on The Suicide Squad, Sebastian Stan’s lackluster voiceovers on What If…?, The Killers’ transcendent new album and David Spade’s sarcastic take on Bachelor in Paradise. Then it’s the week in pop culture, including a Hollywood ending in the Field of Dreams, immature shenanigans on the set of Titans, casting possibilities for Marvel’s Secret Invasion and the fate of Casa Bonita from South Park. And finally, we tease our upcoming episode devoted to Brendan Fraser and some of the Junkies give out their Venmo handles in case you want to manifest them some cash.
