The singer, who became mega-famous at a very early age, recently posted a candid message to Instagram that said "Don't you think if I could have fixed myself I would have already?" From his celebrity connections, including Diddy, to finding religion, his marriage to Hailey Baldwin, to his struggles with his health and the paparazzi, Justin has been through a lot. The Junkies then advise the seemingly exhausted Bieber to slow down, take some time out of the spotlight, and for the love of Vanilla Ice, to please not release that rap album he's been talking about.

This week, Shauna, Hayley and Nicole host the show live from Phoenix Fan Fusion, the comic and pop culture convention that returned this year after a two year hiatus. Hayley and Shauna tell the audience about all the good geeky stuff premiering this week, like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Stranger Things, then welcome special guests to the stage. First up is Hecate, a cosplayer, model and influencer who talks about her favorite cons and how the design process for her looks. Then David Boyles from Drag Story Hour Arizona tells us about his group’s mission to bring inclusive story times to children and their grown-ups in Arizona, inspiring kids to be themselves (and annoying the occasional bigot). Finally, we are joined by Meghan from the Phoenix chapter of Very Awesome Girls Into Nerdy Activities, a group for geek girls and those who identify as girls. Very Awesome Girls use their nerdy superpowers for good by volunteering at community events and crafting geeking items for fundraisers. Finally, The Junkies talk about their OTPs, because everybody has at least one.

This week, the Junkies welcome special guests Steve Romanko and Turner Van Ryn of 13th Generation Productions, who are producing a new animated TV show called The Dragons of Melgor, which they describe as “an animated science fiction adventure that is grounded in our flesh and blood world.” Steve and Turner talk about getting inspiration for their show from old-school Battlestar Galactica, and talk about the creative process with all its ups and downs. Steve and Turner explain exactly what “in development” means, talk about working at Lucasfilm, wearing the same watch as Robert Redford, and what it feels like to literally run into Leonard Nimoy. This is a good episode: so say we all.

This week, The Junkies continue their in-depth look into beloved actor Samuel L. Jackson’s most iconic roles by watching the legendarily goofy (but not Sharknado goofy) Snakes on a Plane. Is it a comedy? An action-adventure? A romance? It’s really a combination of the three, with bad special effects and a Cobra Starship video thrown in to boot. The Junkies confess what creatures they’d be afraid to be trapped on a plane with, from geckos to…butterflies(?), and wonder how they would die if they were trapped with those monkey-fighting snakes on that Monday-to-Friday plane. Then they enjoy some 2006 technology (phones that are also cameras?!), discuss the movie’s best kill scenes, and act out the scene where Kenan Thompson’s character saves the day with his Playstation prowess.

The Junkies are back with part two of their interview with Brad Perry, a legend in the Phoenix, Chicago and San Diego TV markets. This week The Junkies interview Brad Perry, a legend in the Phoenix television market (and elsewhere). Though Brad has conquered almost every kind of media, this is his very first podcast appearance. Brad is currently the host of the Arizona Daily Mix on KAZT, but got his start at Second City in Chicago, doubled for Damon Wayans (among other film jobs), and has headlined morning shows in San Diego as well as Phoenix. Nicole gets Brad to name his favorite Chicago-style pizzeria, and Hayley encourages him to name names about his best and worst celebrity experiences.

The Junkies had so much fun talking to Brad that we had to break the conversation into two shows. Look for part two to drop in a few days.

Who’s the black private dick that’s a sex machine to all the chicks? Obviously, it’s Shaft, aka Law and Order SVU: The Movie. The second lesson in Samuel L. Jackson 101 is the beloved actor’s embodiment of the classic detective character originated by Richard Roundree in 1971. The Junkies look at Jackson’s take on the character, from his persona, his charisma and his collection of black leather coats. And they look at the movie’s bad guys, from the charming yet inexplicably Dominican Jeffrey Wright as Peoples, and Christian Bale (basically playing Patrick Bateman again) as the very punchable Walter Wade Jr. Then the Junkies fancast a 2022 Shaft TV series (with roles for themselves!) and rate the movie and Jackson’s performance, comparing both to Pulp Fiction in a way that might surprise you.

Our final Keanu 101 lesson is on the movie that is one of his first: Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Starring an extremely young Keanu along with Alex Winter, this movie gives a pair of himbos a time machine and sets them loose in history. Excellent! The Junkies talk about how well the movie holds up today (spoiler: it could be better) and wonder if it’s possible to have a metal band with just two guitarists. This week the Junkies continue their semi-regular feature looking into some of pop culture’s most important films from one of its most beloved stars. This week’s lesson is on the movie that first brought us the undeniable chemistry of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock: Speed, aka “The Bus that Couldn’t Slow Down.” The Junkies discuss Keanu’s performance and appearance (yes, we’re that shallow) and rate the other actors by how sad they’d be if they got thrown under the bus. The #QuadSquad (Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna) celebrate the Third Season Premiere of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast by talking about all those shows that didn’t make it past season two. Our second lesson is on time travel/romance The Lake House. Based on the Korean film Il Mare, The Lake House reteams Reeves with one of his most charismatic co-stars, the shag-mulleted Sandra Bullock. Reeves and Bullock play would-be lovers Alex and Kate, who live in the same house but two years apart, their only connection an enchanted mailbox through which the two exchange love letters. The Junkies talk rom-com and time travel tropes, imagine if the movie was rebooted to take place in 2018, when going two years into the future would really be shocking, and determine which of today’s stars have the same chemistry as Keanu and Sandra. And finally, are rom-coms dead in 2022?

The 2010s…what a decade, right? There were good times, probably, and bad times too, and pop culture was there to get us through it all. The Pop Culture Junkie Podcast is looking back at the halcyon days between 2010 and 2019 with a five-part series we’re calling We Love the 2010s. This week, Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna finish out the decade with a look at the years 2018 and 2019.

In 2018, when we weren’t eating Tide Pods, we were arguing whether we heard “Yanny” or “Laurel”. It was the year of Childish Gambino, Cobra Kai and Crazy Rich Asians, We said “Thank U, Next” to Drake memes, changing Stephen Crowder’s mind and self-driving cars, but we loved The Haunting of Hill House, Bohemian Rhapsody and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and saying “Wakanda Forever!”

2019 was the (merciful) end of the decade, and in the final year of the 2010s, we learned that “Midsommar” could be a verb, Cats could have boobs (and buttholes!), Aunt Becky from Full House would do anything to get her kids into a good school, and Sonic the Hedgehog had human teeth. Shudder. Other things sparked joy, like a Real Housewife arguing with a cat, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X and Baby Yoda from The Mandalorian. And before you could say “Ok, Boomer,” the decade was over.

The 2010s…what a decade, right? There were good times, probably, and bad times too, and pop culture was there to get us through it all. The Pop Culture Junkie Podcast is looking back at the halcyon days between 2010 and 2019 with a five-part series we’re calling We Love the 2010s. This week, Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna take a look at the years 2016 and 2017.

2016 was all about Stranger Things, like Baby Shark and Becky with the Good Hair, Pokémon Go and Girl Ghostbusters, clown sightings and perhaps strangest of all, the Chicago Cubs finally won the World Series. We went to La La Land and Couldn’t Stop the Feeling, and one movie tried to make us decide between Batman and Superman (and we chose neither.) And finally, it was the year we all said RIP to Harambe… and an unreal number of beloved celebrities.

2017 brought us the tragic (for billionaires) Fyre Festival, gender reveal fires, and fidget spinners; Wonder Woman made us cheer on the big screen (finally) while The Handmaid’s Tale on the small screen had us panicking; we devoured TikTok, learned Spanish to sing ‘Despacito’, and while TV show revivals were all the rage, the film Get Out was as original as it was terrifying.

2014 was the year of Gone Girl power: we were ‘All About that Bass’ and took a trip to Broad City; Sony got hacked and so did Apple, leading to some TMI leaks; this is the year we met Adele Dazeem, John Wick, and that hot mugshot guy, and couples who just met ended up married for a reality TV show; and finally this is the year we said “Hands up; don’t shoot” and ‘Turn Down for What’?

In 2015, the Force Awakened, and it apparently ruined a lot of childhoods; Hamilton! turned dry American history into Broadway gold; there was a shakeup in late night talk, and one left-hand shark had us all awkwardly dancing. Fifty Shades of Grey (the movie) had us awkwardly admitting we wanted to see it, and we were either Netflix and Chilling or Whipping and Nae Naeing. And finally, one picture of a dress had everyone questioning how differently we all could perceive the world.

We celebrate Spooky Season this week with a double-stuffed episode full of tricks and treats. Prepare to be scandalized as The Junkies confess their childhood transgressions: Hayley’s deception, Alex’s trespassing, and Shauna’s illicit snogging absolutely pale in comparison to the lengths Nicole went to for a first grade birthday party. Olivia and Shauna get pixelated this week with a look at The Sims, the long running game that allows - even encourages - murder and other virtual, victimless vices. They delve into the game lore, highlighting the oddball characters that appear in every version of the game, and discuss the various ways they make the game their own. The Junkies also talk about the Sims movie being produced by Margot Robbie, and answer the important question: does playing the Sims make us akin to the Old Testament God, or are we all in a simulation with a supreme being programming our actions for their own amusement somewhere? Or is it both?

The conversation is so good in this episode that the Junkies consider starting a podcast. The Junkies pop, drop and roll their way through the week in pop culture. Reminiscence puts Hayley to sleep, while the Paw Patrol Movie is on point.
