S05E20 REM 'Monster'
Season 5 · Episode 115
mercredi 21 août 2024 • Duration 02:24:31
Our third REM episode but the first one that we had to delay some recording of because of too much vomiting, which was a treat for Dave. If you've heard our takes on 'Out of Time' and 'Automatic For The People' you'll know that we absolutely loved those but we weren't even a fraction as familiar with this one at all.
Also this is an absolute beast of an episode in terms of running time, mainly because of the total deluge of album and single releases within the five week time period in late 1994 that we were looking at so we won't be offended if you skip those sections if those aren't your favourite bits. But if you do skip them you'll miss us talking about the likes of Korn, Shellac, Digable Planets, Refused, Shampoo and obviously East 17.
As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
S05E19 Us Not Talking About Eric Clapton
Season 5 · Episode 114
mardi 6 août 2024 • Duration 48:43
So here's what happened. We scheduled an episode on Eric Clapton's 'From The Cradle' album from 1994, made a big old list of all the other records we were going to discuss during the episode that got released at the same time but then realised that the Clapton record was just a collection of blues cover versions, not his own songs. And the rules we have say that we don't need to cover that sort of nonsense and we therefore chose to skip it.
However, there were too many albums and singles which we planned to chat about to just bump into the next episode because the list of releases for THAT one is also pretty massive and so we came to the decision to make a mini/bonus episode which was just us doing the albums and singles sections. And frankly we know that for some of our listeners that's all the really want anyway. So here it is, a filler stopgap episode before we come back into the proper timeline with the REM one.
If you do want to hear the Eric Clapton album (and all of the singles we discuss herein) then you can always head to this episode's companion playlist and knock yourself out there. Cheers!
S05E10 Erasure ’I Say I Say I Say’
Season 5 · Episode 105
mardi 17 octobre 2023 • Duration 01:32:25
We are thoroughly back into our regular episodes after a bumpy, special-riddled journey of recent times. And this one is about Erasure's sixth album 'I Say I Say I Say' from May of 1994. We have already done an Erasure album back in Season 2 and we thought that that record was just ok, maybe this one will be more up our street?
Along the way we also chat about Jeru the Damaja, Pearl Jam and, erm, Toad The Wet Sprocket so enjoy those diversions.
And as always check out the companion playlist for this episode with all of the songs we talk about included on it and please feel free to get in contact if you fancy - you can do so via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. And you can catch up with our ongoing playlist made up of songs from all of the albums we've covered so far right here.
S01E14 Madonna 'The Immaculate Collection'
Season 1 · Episode 14
mercredi 8 mai 2019 • Duration 01:55:11
The second of our "cheat" episodes from 1990, or "bonus podcasts" if you're being generous, this Madonna compilation is one of Dave's favourite ever albums which will become very obvious as we go through. Will he go so far as to defend the likes of La Isla Bonita or Cherish? You'll have to listen to find out.
As well as discussing the merits of Madonna we also chat about EMF, Methods of Mayhem (!) and why you should never have sex with your idols.
All the songs we talk about are in a handy playlist for you as always - http://tinyurl.com/PCL014playlist. Enjoy!
S01E13 Very Best Of Elton John
Season 1 · Episode 13
mardi 30 avril 2019 • Duration 01:28:11
We know, we know, we said we weren't going to do any compilations or Best Ofs but just listen to the podcast and we explain our reasoning. Basically it comes down to "it's our podcast and we'll do what we want" to be honest. But it's a megamassivebig album to take a look at, this is a LOT of Elton John right here. Krister is still a fan of classic Elton, Dave is Elton-curious so let's see where he ends up after hearing a double album of greatest hits.
Along the way we talk briefly about things like NWA, Kim Appleby and Stevie Wonder. And Cliff Richard but let's skim past that if we can.
As always, here's a big old Spotify playlist of all the songs we chat about in this week's episode so that you can listen to them at your leisure - http://tinyurl.com/PCL013playlist
S01E12 Paul Simon 'The Rhythm Of The Saints'
Season 1 · Episode 12
mardi 23 avril 2019 • Duration 01:42:41
We're into October of 1990 and in fact are at the last non-compilation album number one of the year. Paul Simon's follow-up to Graceland was much anticipated, and it obviously got to number one since we're talking about it here, but is it any good? Do you have to like "world music" to get it? Does it have pan pipes in it? All questions answered within.
At the same time as this was riding high the charts are full of songs by the likes of Happy Mondays, Belinda Carlisle and Public Enemy so we also chat about them for a bit as you can imagine. Full Spotify playlist of songs to listen along to available at http://tinyurl.com/PCL012playlist.

S01E11 The Charlatans' 'Some Friendly'
Season 1 · Episode 11
mardi 16 avril 2019 • Duration 01:33:08
Into October of 1990 and we've hit upon an album that Krister used to love and remembers very fondly. Will it be as good as he remembers? Dave doesn't really give a shit one way or the other as this sort of early 90s indie passed him right by and at quite some distance.
We discuss Tim Burgess' bizarre lyrics, the use of Hammond organs in music generally, and how embarrassing it would be to sustain an injury in a fight at a Status Quo concert. We also get the chance to play and talk about the likes of Maria McKee, MC Hammer and, god help us all, Scooter.
All of the songs we talk about are in our weekly playlist as usual, listen along with us here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL011playlist. Check out www.pclpodcast.com for all our social media and contact details.
S01E10 George Michael 'Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1' (and a very brief mention of the Three Tenors)
Season 1 · Episode 10
mardi 9 avril 2019 • Duration 01:17:39
Once again we find ourselves having to acknowledge a record featuring Pavarotti because the 3 Tenors album was number one for five weeks but we skip pretty much immediately past it and focus on George Michael's re-defining 'Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1'. Neither of us have heard this whole album before and we agreed that we were looking forward to it - does it hold up to scrutiny nearly 30 years later?
Along the way we manage to fit in discussion of why Britain is ashamed of its heavy metal roots, why the Thunderstruck drinking game is the best of all song-based drinking games and why so many 1990 number one albums have one ill-judged reggae song on them.
Playlist with everything we talk about (except the 3 Tenors) available here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL010playlist .

S01E09 Prince 'Graffiti Bridge'
Season 1 · Episode 9
mardi 2 avril 2019 • Duration 01:38:59
Our ninth episode takes us into August of 1990 and Prince is at number one for one week only with 'Graffiti Bridge', his soundtrack to his godawful film of the same name. We get songs about dancing, songs about sex, songs about a dead father, more sex stuff, one about an actual bridge, and some more sex.
Dave is an absolutely massive Prince fan so what will he make of this having not heard it in many years? Krister doesn't give much of a shit either way; will the purple sex goblin impress him with his kitten heels and falsetto vocals?
We also manage to fit in some chat about Betty Boo, how to pronounce 'Tower of Power' correctly, and whether or not Dave can identify a Bombalurina track from just the intro.
Playlist of songs listened to and talked about available as usual on our Spotify page, link to this one here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL009playlist
S01E08 Elton John 'Sleeping With The Past'
Season 1 · Episode 8
mardi 26 mars 2019 • Duration 01:36:14
Krister loves a bit of classic Elton. Dave thinks he has a voice like a malfunctioning foghorn. What will we make of this album? We also manage to talk about NWA, Madonna's 'Hanky Panky' and an absolutely astonishing Elton John cover of 'Give Peace A Chance' along the way. Also Krister has a bagful of Elton John related jokes with him and each one is worst than the last. You've been warned. Plus we find out if Dave really can remember all the words to 'Turtle Power' nearly 30 years on.
As usual you can listen to a playlist of all the songs we discuss and play here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL008playlist
