S06E13 The Charlatans 'The Charlatans'19 Nov 202501:33:23

The Charlatans released their fourth album, just called 'The Charlatans', in September 1995 and here we are to give it a once over. Our musical tastes are shown in stark contrast on this one as Krister really enjoys it while Dave is left pretty cold.

We do get the chance to gabble about the likes of Money Mark, Slayer and Whigfield though so a bit of something for everyone.

As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating or comment over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist (which contains ALL of the songs we talk about on this one) and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. And if you want to donate to our PayPal account for the price of a pint or a cup of coffee that is always appreciated as well obviously. Cheers!

S06E12 Boyzone 'Said And Done'29 Oct 202501:31:09

Please lord forgive us for whatever we did to deserve this album in our run of 90s number ones. We knew it was on the horizon and finally here we are. It's only a mild spoiler to say we weren't looking forward to listening to this one and it turns out we were pretty justified in those fears. Sorry if you're a Boyzone fan - you might want to skip this episode.

But at least you, the listener, can enjoy our sacrifice and we do at least get to talk about some other music from the time such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rancid and Urge Overkill so it's not wall to wall slagging off boybands.

S06E03 Radiohead 'The Bends' Bonus Episode19 Mar 202501:29:18

Only three episodes into Season 6 and we're already doing an off-piste bonus episode. But how could we NOT do one on 'The Bends' by Radiohead considering it's crazy that it was never a number one album.

For this one we both admit that we were slightly late to The Bends Party but these days we recognise it for the classic that it is and so while this episode might not be as jocular and funny as we try to make our regular ones, we hope that we make up for it in enthusiasm for the source material.

Back with a regular episode as soon as we can, hope you enjoy this special bonus treat.

S02E12 Metallica 'Metallica'30 Oct 201901:48:56

Oh boy, this is a big one! Dave is a huge Metallica fan already and Krister likes a lot of the big tunes but how will he get on with the full album? Is it as good today as Dave remembers from when he was a teenager? I mean, probably, yeah.

Listen as we discuss whether Metallica ripped another band off for 'Enter Sandman'; is Kid Rock's use of the 'Sad But True' sample a legally punishable crime; is that REALLY an actual song about turning into a werewolf? And along the way we chat about Cypress Hill, Prodigy and Will Smith's VERY variable musical output.

All of the songs we play and chat about are on our weekly companion Spotify playlist and head to www.pclpodcast.com as usual for links to everything else.

S02E11 Cher 'Love Hurts'22 Oct 201901:31:36

This week sees us listening to a Cher album. Like, in full and everything. This is like the tail end of when she was a soft rock queen, before she became a dancefloor icon and ruined autotune for eternity.

We also get the chance to talk about Anthrax, Therapy? and Vanilla Ice along the way which is always a treat. Our weekly playlist combining the album in question and all of the various songs we chat about can be found here. And head to www.pclpodcast.com for links to our ever-growing ongoing Spotify playlist with songs from every album we cover as well as all of our social media details and a load of stupid photoshopped album covers.

S02E10 Seal 'Seal'15 Oct 201901:20:05

After two (quite self-indulgent, we know) episodes which weren't strictly about number one albums of the 90s we are back on track with a listen to Seal's debut self-titled album which was number one for three weeks in mid 1991. We both remember and like the single 'Crazy' - will the rest of the album hold some previously unknown (to us) delights? We shall see.

While we're here we also talked about Skid Row, Type O Negative and the infamous second NWA album in quite some depth. Oh, and Crystal Bastard Waters as well.

The companion playlist of everything we chat about can be heard here and links to all of our social media are at our website www.pclpodcast.com. Enjoy!

S02E09b Bonus Episode Part Two - Smashing Pumpkins 'Gish'08 Oct 201900:51:53

Following straight on from last week's episode this is the second half of the bonus podcast we recorded to discuss a couple of albums that were released while Eurythmics Greatest Hits was number one and were pretty special to us. This week sees us talk about the Smashing Pumpkins' debut album 'Gish' which was released on May 28th 1991 and made a big impact on at least one of your hosts at the time.

Before that though we cover the singles chart in this period and manage to squeeze in opinions on Definition Of Sound, Rebel MC and the long-forgotten Five Thirty among myriad others.

All the songs we chat about are on our companion playlist for your listening-along pleasure and details of how to get in touch or follow us on social media are at our website on www.pclpodcast.com

S02E09a Bonus Episode Part One - Eurythmics Greatest Hits and Primus 'Sailing The Seas Of Cheese'01 Oct 201901:00:29

We know, we know - we're not supposed to do episodes on Greatest Hits or compilations but the Eurythmics album was number one for ten weeks in total and during that time two of our very favourite albums were released so we thought we'd take the chance to bend the rules and put out a couple of bonus episodes to wax lyrical about them. This week you'll hear us talking about Eurythmics (albeit quite briefly) and then you'll hear us going on at length about one of Dave's favourite albums, Primus's 'Sailing The Seas Of Cheese'. He chooses five tracks from it as a sampler which we have a listen to and discuss. We also have a talk about loads of other really great albums that came out in this ten week period of 1991 - it's genuinely an exciting time for music so please forgive us as we get excited about things that we love.

Part two will come out next week and then it normal service will be resumed after that. The playlist for this week's episode can be found here and head to our website www.pclpodcast.com for loads of other playlists, links to social media and terrible, terrible photoshop jokes in the gallery. Cheers!

S02E08 R.E.M. 'Out Of Time'24 Sep 201901:25:22

HOLD THE PHONE. Has 1991 finally given us what could actually be described as a 'classic album'? Well, both Dave and Krister remember it fondly and it's certainly touted as a classic but does it stand up to scrutiny nearly 30 years later? We shall see.

The conversation takes us down the usual strange pathways making mention of the likes of Chesney Hawkes and Megadeth and we also see Dave making a comparison between one of the REM songs and a certain Kenny Loggins tune - is he right or just mental? You decide.

The full companion Spotify playlist with all the REM songs and many of the other tunes we chat about is available to listen to here. The rest of our playlists and various nonsense (and links to our social media) are, as ever, at www.pclpodcast.com The podcasts we mentioned this week are available to check out at the following links, they really are excellent and you should definitely check them out (tell them we sent you so we get some credit for being cool):

Dancing About Architecture Crash Bang Wallop  Rob Mulholland Has An Opinion

S02E07 The Farm 'Spartacus'17 Sep 201901:29:31

Hey, remember The Farm? Krister has fond memories of Groovy Train and Dave remembers liking All Together Now so surely that must mean they're going to find loads of other songs to enjoy on this one? We shall see.

We do get the chance to think about 'Hey Matthew' by Karel Fialka again though, as well as Living Colour, Massive Attack and Gang Starr among others.

Check out this episode's companion playlist with all of the album tracks and as many of the other ones we talk about as we could find on Spotify here - https://tinyurl.com/PCLs02e07playlist

And as usual check out www.pclpodcast.com for links to all our social media where we post the most HILARIOUS STUFF relating to each episode every week.

S02E06 Chris Rea 'Auberge'10 Sep 201901:26:38

Do you like slide guitar? Do you like racing cars? Do you like a man who sounds like he smokes 60 a day, every day? Then have we got a treat for you! Next in line for our listening pleasure is 'Auberge' by Chris Rea which was number one in March 1991 for one week only. However, not to get all clickbaity on you but what you hear in this week's episode may surprise you. It certainly surprised us.

Alongside Mr Rea we discuss the likes of Ice Cube, The Eagles and FishMonkeyMan. Don't pretend you don't remember FishMonkeyMan. Come on now.

We do also have to apologise for playing what is probably one of the worst songs of 1991, if not the whole decade - sometimes being for charity just isn't enough of an excuse.

You can find our playlist with this week's album and as many other songs that we talk about on the episode as we could get on there at https://tinyurl.com/PCLs02e06playlist. Head over to our website www.pclpodcast.com for loads of stupid photos with our faces on them and links to all of our social media.

S02E05 Oleta Adams 'Circle Of One'03 Sep 201901:16:17

Remember Oleta Adams, from back in 1991? Of course not. Remember her song though, the big hit? No? It was called 'Get Here'? There you go, now you're on board. Well it turns out she has an album that got to number one for one week in February 1991 so we had to listen to the whole thing.

But as well as chatting about smooth soul jazz we managed to fit in some stuff about Tears For Fears, The Clash and the wonder of saxophone solos.

You can hear all of the songs we talk about on our companion Spotify playlist here - https://tinyurl.com/PCLs02e05playlist

And as always head over to www.pclpodcast.com for links to our various social media sites and other playlists to keep you entertained.

S02E04 Queen 'Innuendo'27 Aug 201901:28:27

Next up in the number one albums of 1991 is Queen's swansong album 'Innuendo' which appears to be lauded by quite a few critics as one of their classics. Will we agree? Both Dave and Krister are relative novices when it comes to Queen so will this be their entry point to a whole big back catalogue?

In the midst of the Queen talk we also touch upon such subjects as Morrissey being a twat, the Butthole Surfers and songs titled 'Delilah'. All songs talked about in the podcast can be heard in our companion playlist - https://tinyurl.com/PCLs02e04playlist

Links to all our social media can be found as usual at our website www.pclpodcast.com

S06E02 Elastica 'Elastica'19 Feb 202502:04:51

One for the 90s indie fans, here's an episode on Elastica's self-titled debut from 1995 which even though it's got 15 songs on it is somehow only a 38 minute long record.

That doesn't mean a short podcast though - quite the opposite in fact as we find ourselves with plenty to enjoy and lots to say. Plus an absolute avalanche of other album and single releases to chat about so apologies if those sections aren't your cup of tea, feel free to skip them (although then you'll miss out on thrilling conversation about the likes of Monster Magnet, Morphine and, erm, Scooter).

As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist (which contains ALL of the songs we talk about on this one) and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!

S02E03 Jesus Jones 'Doubt'20 Aug 201902:16:11

Welcome to episode three of our new season and enjoy taking a step back in terms of audio quality for one week because we recorded this one out of sequence, before we upgraded our microphones. Hurray! But ignore that if you can as we are joined by our first ever GUEST on the podcast, Si Sharp, to delve into the guts of Jesus Jones' album 'Doubt' from February 1991. Si is an expert on many musical topics and genres but has a special place in his heart for this particular sort of indie stuff, it's what he grew up on and loved dearly. But are Dave and Krister going to be fans as well? Dave is notoriously adverse to "indie" stuff while Krister is usually all over that shit. Will this revisit to the album be a success? Along the way we also get the chance to chat about Soho, EMF, Rick Astley and Krister's granny. Sorry about this, gran.

Be sure to check out www.pclpodcast.com for more info and links to our various social media and go to Beat Rehab to read more of Si's opinions and lists. As usual we've made a Spotify playlist of all the songs we talk about for you to listen to here - https://tinyurl.com/PCLs02e03playlist

S02E02 Sting 'The Soul Cages'13 Aug 201901:20:22

We keep on trucking into season two with a look at, and listen to, Sting's third solo album 'The Soul Cages' which is a nautically themed tribute to his father who died a couple of years before this was released. Both Dave and Krister are self-confessed Police fans so will they like this as well?

This week we also get to briefly chat about A Tribe Called Quest, Nirvana and, for some reason, Sheep On Drugs. You can listen to our Spotify playlist for this episode here - https://tinyurl.com/PCLs02e02playlist .

As usual check out www.pclpodcast.com for ways to get in touch, follow our various social media or listen to older episodes and playlists. Enjoy!

S02E01 Enigma 'MCMXC AD'06 Aug 201901:23:33

We are back after our break with a new season and a new year's worth of number one albums to listen to. 1991 kicks off with Enigma's debut album and it definitely makes a big impression on Dave and Krister as you will hear. You may also hear that the sound quality has improved a bit and we no longer sound like we're recording in a bucket in a field. Or at the very least, a better quality bucket. Hurrah for new equipment. As well as discussing Enigma and why you'd want to listen to monks chanting over a breakbeat we also chat about Gang Starr, Robert Palmer and C&C Music Factory. As usual we've put together a playlist of all the songs (including the Enigma album) that we talk about for you to listen to here. It's good to be back!

S01E16 Bonus Episode - The Best of 1990 Part 221 May 201901:01:43

And so here we are at the end of our first season. This is the second part of our bonus podcasts focusing on what our own favourite albums from 1990 are, this week we're counting down our top fives. Can you guess what will be in there? If you've listened to our nonsense over the preceding podcasts then very possibly as we're pretty vocal about what we do like.

We'd love to know what your favourite albums were from this year as well, hit us up on one of our social media outlets and post your list so we can argue with you and tell you why you're wrong. All details on our website www.pclpodcast.com

Have a listen to our playlist of handpicked tunes from each of the albums in our top fives here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL016playlist . Thanks for listening, see you soon for Season Two and a journey through 1991!

S01E15 Bonus Episode - The Best of 1990 Part 114 May 201900:54:49

After listening to a whole year's worth of number one albums we have come to the end of our journey through 1990. And to celebrate we decided to choose our own top ten albums from the year and chat about those - this is part one where we run down our numbers ten to six. What will be in there? Will any of the albums we talked about throughout our first season feature in either of our lists? How many of our top tens will feature saxophone solos and reggae versions? Find out inside.

We've put one song from each of our album choices onto a Spotify playlist so you can listen along and judge for yourself if our nominations are actually any good or if we're pretty much just smugly wanking off and pretending that anyone is interested in our opinions. Playlist is here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL015playlist

We'd love you to get in contact with your own favourite albums released in 1990 so we can see what sort of listeners we've got - all of our contact details and social media things are on our website www.pclpodcast.com so do give us a shout, we're dying to know what oddities you're all into.

S01E14 Madonna 'The Immaculate Collection'08 May 201901:55:11

The second of our "cheat" episodes from 1990, or "bonus podcasts" if you're being generous, this Madonna compilation is one of Dave's favourite ever albums which will become very obvious as we go through. Will he go so far as to defend the likes of La Isla Bonita or Cherish? You'll have to listen to find out.

As well as discussing the merits of Madonna we also chat about EMF, Methods of Mayhem (!) and why you should never have sex with your idols.

All the songs we talk about are in a handy playlist for you as always - http://tinyurl.com/PCL014playlist. Enjoy!

S01E13 Very Best Of Elton John30 Apr 201901:28:11

We know, we know, we said we weren't going to do any compilations or Best Ofs but just listen to the podcast and we explain our reasoning. Basically it comes down to "it's our podcast and we'll do what we want" to be honest. But it's a megamassivebig album to take a look at, this is a LOT of Elton John right here. Krister is still a fan of classic Elton, Dave is Elton-curious so let's see where he ends up after hearing a double album of greatest hits.

Along the way we talk briefly about things like NWA, Kim Appleby and Stevie Wonder. And Cliff Richard but let's skim past that if we can.

As always, here's a big old Spotify playlist of all the songs we chat about in this week's episode so that you can listen to them at your leisure - http://tinyurl.com/PCL013playlist

S01E12 Paul Simon 'The Rhythm Of The Saints'23 Apr 201901:42:41

We're into October of 1990 and in fact are at the last non-compilation album number one of the year. Paul Simon's follow-up to Graceland was much anticipated, and it obviously got to number one since we're talking about it here, but is it any good? Do you have to like "world music" to get it? Does it have pan pipes in it? All questions answered within.

At the same time as this was riding high the charts are full of songs by the likes of Happy Mondays, Belinda Carlisle and Public Enemy so we also chat about them for a bit as you can imagine. Full Spotify playlist of songs to listen along to available at http://tinyurl.com/PCL012playlist.

For details of all the various ways to listen to our other episodes or get in contact with us please visit www.pclpodcast.com - do say hello if you fancy, we love that shit.

S01E11 The Charlatans' 'Some Friendly'16 Apr 201901:33:08

Into October of 1990 and we've hit upon an album that Krister used to love and remembers very fondly. Will it be as good as he remembers? Dave doesn't really give a shit one way or the other as this sort of early 90s indie passed him right by and at quite some distance.

We discuss Tim Burgess' bizarre lyrics, the use of Hammond organs in music generally, and how embarrassing it would be to sustain an injury in a fight at a Status Quo concert. We also get the chance to play and talk about the likes of Maria McKee, MC Hammer and, god help us all, Scooter.

All of the songs we talk about are in our weekly playlist as usual, listen along with us here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL011playlist. Check out www.pclpodcast.com for all our social media and contact details.

S01E10 George Michael 'Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1' (and a very brief mention of the Three Tenors)09 Apr 201901:17:39

Once again we find ourselves having to acknowledge a record featuring Pavarotti because the 3 Tenors album was number one for five weeks but we skip pretty much immediately past it and focus on George Michael's re-defining 'Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1'. Neither of us have heard this whole album before and we agreed that we were looking forward to it - does it hold up to scrutiny nearly 30 years later?

Along the way we manage to fit in discussion of why Britain is ashamed of its heavy metal roots, why the Thunderstruck drinking game is the best of all song-based drinking games and why so many 1990 number one albums have one ill-judged reggae song on them.

Playlist with everything we talk about (except the 3 Tenors) available here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL010playlist .

S06E01 Celine Dion 'The Colour Of My Love'04 Dec 202401:57:18

It's a brand new season of PCL, you wonderful people! A reason for celebration and joy all over the world except for the fact that our first episode is apparently on a Celine Dion album that first came out in 1993. How is this the case? It's the one with 'Power Of Love' and 'Think Twice' on it, two monster power ballads which are a weakness of ours so perhaps this will actually be up our streets?

There is also a record breaking amount of album and single releases that we get the chance to talk about because Celine's album was at number for multiple weeks at the start of 1995 so you can hear us chat about the likes of Leftfield, Quicksand, PJ Harvey and for some reason, PJ & Duncan. And we also bring up the topic of Jimmy Nail about three times so sorry about that.

Cheers!

S01E09 Prince 'Graffiti Bridge'02 Apr 201901:38:59

Our ninth episode takes us into August of 1990 and Prince is at number one for one week only with 'Graffiti Bridge', his soundtrack to his godawful film of the same name. We get songs about dancing, songs about sex, songs about a dead father, more sex stuff, one about an actual bridge, and some more sex.

Dave is an absolutely massive Prince fan so what will he make of this having not heard it in many years? Krister doesn't give much of a shit either way; will the purple sex goblin impress him with his kitten heels and falsetto vocals?

We also manage to fit in some chat about Betty Boo, how to pronounce 'Tower of Power' correctly, and whether or not Dave can identify a Bombalurina track from just the intro.

Playlist of songs listened to and talked about available as usual on our Spotify page, link to this one here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL009playlist

S01E08 Elton John 'Sleeping With The Past'26 Mar 201901:36:14

Krister loves a bit of classic Elton. Dave thinks he has a voice like a malfunctioning foghorn. What will we make of this album? We also manage to talk about NWA, Madonna's 'Hanky Panky' and an absolutely astonishing Elton John cover of 'Give Peace A Chance' along the way. Also Krister has a bagful of Elton John related jokes with him and each one is worst than the last. You've been warned. Plus we find out if Dave really can remember all the words to 'Turtle Power' nearly 30 years on.

As usual you can listen to a playlist of all the songs we discuss and play here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL008playlist

S01E07 New Kids On The Block 'Step By Step' (and a touch of Pavarotti)19 Mar 201901:44:54

We knew that Pavarotti was on its way so we very briefly chat about his Essential Collection but let's forget that and concentrate on the total gift that is NKOTB's 'Step By Step' album. This is by far the most fun we've had to date, there is just so much ridiculous nonsense to discuss on here. And trust us, some of the best stuff is in the final third as well.

We very much encourage you to listen to some of the utter cack on here via our usual companion playlist with all of the songs we mention on the show - http://tinyurl.com/PCL007playlist

S01E06 Soul II Soul 'Volume 2 - 1990: A New Decade'12 Mar 201901:28:27

We're halfway through 1990 already and Soul II Soul's second album, 'Vol 2 - 1990: A New Decade" is number one in the UK charts. Dave and Krister both remember this one fondly from their youth but haven't listened to it in many years - does it stand up to scrutiny? Does Jazzie B sound like he should be in Flight Of The Concords? Whose celebrity sex tape would you least want to have to watch? All of these questions come up in some way, shape or form throughout this week's episode for which we can only apologise. We also take time to discuss Sydney Youngblood's apparent beef with Soul II Soul, various football-based songs released in 1990 and discover a previously unknown (to us) link between Soul II Soul and Alanis Morrissette. As usual we've made a playlist with all the songs we talk about for you to listen to at your leisure, enjoy it here - http://tinyurl.com/PCL006playlist

S01E05 Fleetwood Mac 'Behind The Mask' (and some Carpenters too)05 Mar 201901:38:55

Throughout April and May of 1990 The Carpenters found themselves at number one for a staggering seven weeks with a Best Of compilation. But for one week in the middle of it Fleetwood Mac nicked the top spot off them with 'Behind The Mask' so that's what we discuss in this episode. We do briefly talk about the Carpenters as well, and Jason Donovan and Alannah Myles for good measure. A playlist of all the songs we talk about is available to listen to here - https://tinyurl.com/PCL005playlist

S01E04 Depeche Mode 'Violator' (and a bit of Bowie)26 Feb 201901:39:44

In our fourth episode we go a bit off piste - the next number one album in our journey is ChangesBowie which is obviously a best of, so we make the decision to chat only briefly about that but concentrate mainly on the number two album of the week which is 'Violator' by Depeche Mode. Which means this one is as sweary as usual but with added drugs and sex references. Check out our companion playlist for this episode with all of the tracks played or talked about: https://tinyurl.com/y2blo232

S01E03 Sinead O'Connor 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got'19 Feb 201901:24:33

For episode three Dave and Krister dig into Sinead O'Connor's breakthrough album 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got' (you know, the one with Nothing Compares 2 U on it) while also chatting about people like Michael Bolton and Guru Josh along the way. Also marvel at our ability to blithely confuse the Notting Hillbillies with the Travelling Wilburys because we're idiots.

S01E02 The Christians 'Colour'31 Jan 201901:14:22

For our second podcast we dive into UK soul/pop act The Christians' sophomore album. Be warned, this episode is not the best sound quality as one side of our conversation ended up as a corrupted file. We've done our best to rescue it though and it's definitely worth bearing with us. Contains plenty of swearing by the way. And lots of unnecessary solos (on the record, not by us).

S01E01 Phil Collins 'But Seriously'31 Jan 201901:02:32

Our first podcast and what an album to start with. Phil Collins' 'But Seriously' was the first number one of the 90s and with an album of this magnitude there is plenty to talk about. But is it actually any good? Did he manage to finally end the homeless problem with 'Another Day In Paradise'? Why are there so many horns on this record? Check out the playlist we made of all the songs discussed on this podcast at https://tinyurl.com/PCL101playlist

S05E22 Best Albums of 1994 - Season Five Wrap-up30 Oct 202402:06:46

It feels like it's taken forever but here we are at the end of season 5, our journey through 1994. And as is now tradition we have put an episode together to discuss what our own personal top ten lists of the best albums released during the year are.

After a brief chat about some of the albums that NEARLY made our top tens we then get into it and have a lovely conversation about bands like Portishead, Beastie Boys, Soundgarden, Senser, NIN, Kyuss and loads of others.

We're also very grateful to some of our friends who contributed their thoughts about their favourite albums of 1994 - big love to the wonderful comedians Stephen Grant and Rich Wilson, and Steve & Gaz from Trve.Cvlt.Pop - stay tuned right at the end of the episode to hear their whole conversation about their choices where Steve manages to not mention the Chaka Demus & Pliers album which frankly none of us could have predicted.

If you want to check our our playlist with songs from each of our own choices on it then you can find it here. We will be back ASAP with a whole new season of albums to look at as we go through 1995 but until then enjoy this episode and as always please do let us know your own faves from '94 if we totally missed them out.

S05E21 Nirvana 'Unplugged In New York' with guest Niall Bakewell03 Sep 202402:18:28

For our last "proper" episode in season five before we get into our 1994 end of year round-ups we return to a band that we've covered a couple of times before. And while you could argue that we realistically shouldn't be covering this record because it's not a studio album and is half full of previously released tunes, well... shut up. We're very obviously too big of fanboys not to do this one as well.

And to help us out with discussing such a big record we are joined by the brilliant Niall Bakewell from The Zeroes Podcast. Full disclosure: we recorded this episode a good while ago and out of sequence with the rest of this season because Niall had to make the trip over to us from Northern Ireland and he's a very busy man so we happily worked around his schedule.

There are also plenty of other bands and acts that we talked about in this one as well such as Pearl Jam, Stone Roses, Sheryl Crow and, erm, Jimmy Nail. Hmmm.

Along the way we do touch on some more serious subjects as you can probably imagine so this one isn't necessarily as light-hearted as other episodes but there are also some of Dave's worst jokes to date to try and balance it out.

As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!

S05E20 REM 'Monster'21 Aug 202402:24:31

Our third REM episode but the first one that we had to delay some recording of because of too much vomiting, which was a treat for Dave. If you've heard our takes on 'Out of Time' and 'Automatic For The People' you'll know that we absolutely loved those but we weren't even a fraction as familiar with this one at all.

Also this is an absolute beast of an episode in terms of running time, mainly because of the total deluge of album and single releases within the five week time period in late 1994 that we were looking at so we won't be offended if you skip those sections if those aren't your favourite bits. But if you do skip them you'll miss us talking about the likes of Korn, Shellac, Digable Planets, Refused, Shampoo and obviously East 17.

As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!

S05E19 Us Not Talking About Eric Clapton06 Aug 202400:48:43

So here's what happened. We scheduled an episode on Eric Clapton's 'From The Cradle' album from 1994, made a big old list of all the other records we were going to discuss during the episode that got released at the same time but then realised that the Clapton record was just a collection of blues cover versions, not his own songs. And the rules we have say that we don't need to cover that sort of nonsense and we therefore chose to skip it.

However, there were too many albums and singles which we planned to chat about to just bump into the next episode because the list of releases for THAT one is also pretty massive and so we came to the decision to make a mini/bonus episode which was just us doing the albums and singles sections. And frankly we know that for some of our listeners that's all the really want anyway. So here it is, a filler stopgap episode before we come back into the proper timeline with the REM one.

If you do want to hear the Eric Clapton album (and all of the singles we discuss herein) then you can always head to this episode's companion playlist and knock yourself out there. Cheers!

S05E18 Oasis 'Definitely Maybe'16 Jul 202401:50:12

When you're talking about bands that defined 90s music it's hard not to include Oasis which means that simply doing an episode on their debut album 'Definitely Maybe' from 1994 is a minefield because everyone has an opinion on this one, usually either VERY positive or VERY VERY negative.

Krister had this album at the time and remembers enjoying it for the most part, Dave has never previously deliberately listened to Oasis in his life but still knows most of the songs on here through mere osmosis. Will either of us end up loving this one by the end of a reassessment? Not completely, no, but we both have songs on here that we really love it turns out.

We also talk about bands like Portishead, Manic Street Preachers and, erm, Indie Kylie along the way.

As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!

S05E17 Prince 'Come'25 Jun 202401:47:44

Hey, stop that sniggering at the back. Just because a Prince album is called 'Come' doesn't mean that it's all smutty and full of filth. Oh wait no, that's exactly what it means. Recommence sniggering if you wish.

If you want to hear Prince croon about oral sex and orgasms then have we got a treat for you in this episode. Conversely if you want to hear Krister find it excruciatingly embarrassing having to listen to Prince's sexy talk then you're also in luck.

Thankfully we're also able to chat about acts such as Jeff Buckley, Gravediggaz and Orbital so it's not all wall to wall smut.

As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!

S05E16 Rolling Stones 'Voodoo Lounge' with guest Gaz Jones24 Apr 202402:04:03

Thirty years after their debut album it turns out that the Rolling Stones are still capable of getting to number one in the UK with a new record. The 90s were fucking weird. Is this actually a good album though, should the Stones still have bothered putting out new music to add to their legacy? Opinions are divided.

For this episode we are joined by the wonderful Gaz Jones from the Trve.Cvlt.Pop (and previously Track One, Side One) podcast who is a big Stones fan and actually bought this record in the week it came out back in 1994. Big big thanks again to him for coming to join us on this one.

And this week we also get the chance to chat about bands like Kerbdog, Marilyn Manson and the mighty Let Loose. All of which made Gaz very happy.

We also mention our May 2024 Brighton Fringe live shows, tickets for which are already on sale and can be bought from the website here. We'd love to see some friendly faces if you fancy coming along!

As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. S06E11 Black Grape 'It's Great When You're Straight' with special Guest Stephen Hill08 Oct 202502:31:12

It's 1995, it's the summer and all you want to do is party so what do you need? You need a new album featuring Shaun Ryder to neck a load of drugs to and throw yourself around a dancefloor. We're joined by our lovely friend Stephen Hill from the Trve.Cvlt.Pop podcast to cast an eye across Black Grape's debut album 'It's Great When You're Straight... Yeah' and debate its party credentials among other things. The TCP lads have their own episode all about this album on their patreon page already so check it out if you want to hear more of Stephen's opinions. Or, indeed, simply less of ours.

We also take the chance to chat about acts such as Moist, Goldie and of course Dog Eat Dog. And we threw in a fruit-based pop quiz in the middle of the episode for a bit of fun because why not, eh?

As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating or comment over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist (which contains ALL of the songs we talk about on this one) and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. And if you want to donate to our PayPal account for the price of a pint or a cup of coffee that is always appreciated as well obviously. Cheers!

S05E15 The Prodigy 'Music For The Jilted Generation'10 Apr 202402:00:59

Some albums are deserving of the term 'gamechanger' and here's a massive one from 1994. The Prodigy's second album 'Music For The Jilted Generation' introduced so many people to dance music who might not previously have given it a second thought so we were very excited to do an episode on it. So excited in fact that we brought a guest in to help us out so huge thanks to Cliff Barnes from the Devil Times Five Horror Movie Podcast who is a Prodigy uber-fan as well with loads of insights.

Among us we also talk about other acts and albums from the time like Downset, Killing Joke and Julian Cope. Oh and the Vengaboys of course but presumably that goes without saying.

We also mention our May 2024 Brighton Fringe live shows, tickets for which are already on sale and can be bought from the website here. We'd love to see some friendly faces if you fancy coming along! And as always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!

S05E14 Ace of Base 'Happy Nation'13 Mar 202401:32:18

Who's up for a bit of Swedish reggae-pop then? Who knew that was going to be a big genre in the early 90s? Apparently Ace of Base did and they gave us quite a lot of it on this, their debut* album, which got to number one in 1994.

As well as discussing the merits of The Sign and All That She Wants we chat some rubbish about Suicidal Tendencies, Kyuss and the Reverend Horton Heat among many others.

We also mention our May 2024 Brighton Fringe live shows, tickets for which are already on sale and can be bought from the website here. We'd love to see some friendly faces if you fancy coming along!

If you'd like to listen to the Unsung Podcast episode that we mention all about the Nazi rumours behind the band then check it out here - it's a really interesting and well put together bit of research.

As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. *sort of debut but repackaged and rejigged. Don't be a pedant.

S05E13 The Cranberries 'Everybody Else Is Doing It...'14 Feb 202401:23:22

We're taking a metaphorical journey to Ireland to dip our toes into the debut album by The Cranberries 'Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't We'. A band that both Dave and Krister admit to not liking the majority of what they've heard but then again the majority of what they've heard is the single 'Zombie' so perhaps there's more to The Cranberries "dan dis".

As well as pointed digs at Krister's Irishness we also chat about acts like Fun-Da-Mental, Rancid and The Sp!n Doctors. Apologies for that last one.

As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!

S05E12 2 Unlimited 'Real Things'24 Jan 202401:25:23

How in the merry hell did 2 Unlimited get ANOTHER number one album in the UK? We thought we were done with these guys after our episode in Season 4 but here we are again apparently.

So is this one a drastic departure away from their hyper-cheesy pop rave previous albums? Or course not. What are you, mad? Enjoy our journey through another record of Eurohouse ridiculousness and be thankful you don't have to listen to this record as many times as we did.

Thankfully we also get the chance to chat about other acts like Stone Temple Pilots, Bruce Dickinson and Helmet so it's not all bad.

As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!

S05E11 Seal II29 Nov 202301:38:22

We are back, and so is Seal with another self-titled album. After doing Seal 'Seal' in our second season we find ourselves doing Seal 'Seal' in season 5 as well. Has the music changed or progressed? Is this a very different beast to the one that went before? What we did find is that this is up there with the most divided we have been on an album - let us know which way you end up landing.

But as well as Seal we do chat some rubbish about Fish from Marillion, the Beastie Boys and, most bizarrely, 2 Live Jews. The 90s were a very strange time indeed.

And as always check out the companion playlist for this episode with all of the songs we talk about included on it and please feel free to get in contact if you fancy - you can do so via our FacebookTwitter and Instagram pages. And you can catch up with our ongoing playlist made up of songs from all of the albums we've covered so far right here.

S05E10 Erasure ’I Say I Say I Say’17 Oct 202301:32:25

We are thoroughly back into our regular episodes after a bumpy, special-riddled journey of recent times. And this one is about Erasure's sixth album 'I Say I Say I Say' from May of 1994. We have already done an Erasure album back in Season 2 and we thought that that record was just ok, maybe this one will be more up our street?

Along the way we also chat about Jeru the Damaja, Pearl Jam and, erm, Toad The Wet Sprocket so enjoy those diversions.

S05E09 Senser ’Stacked Up’ Bonus Episode19 Sep 202301:36:58

Yes, yes, ANOTHER diversion from our regular journey through the 90s, this time an episode all about Senser's debut album 'Stacked Up' from May 1994. This is an album that we both have a lot of love for, one that we played over and over when it came out and so we were keen to check it out again to see how it stands up after nearly 30 years.

We have contributions from some of our podcast buddies peppered throughout this as well so thank you to Stephen and Gaz from Trve.Cvlt.Pop, Si from Beat Rehab and Niall from The Zeroes for sharing their memories of this record.
