Episode 79 - The Last Pomcast!02 Jun 202300:55:54

Hey Pomcats! It's been a woolly, witty and wonderful nine years with you all, but it's time for us to hang up our headphones and say goodbye!

This last episode of the Pomcast sees Lydia and Sophie reminiscing about their recording adventures and special moments, and it of course has to end with the favourite feature, 'Top Three!' Plus, it wouldn't be a Pomcast without a special guest interview, so the gals interview each other (finally)!

A huge thank you all our wonderful listeners and to the Pom Pom team for all your support!

Although the Pomcast is ending there is lots to enjoy from the world of Pom Pom! To be kept informed with all the latest updates, delightful titbits, and treats, we recommend signing up to our weekly newsletter

Episode 78 – Short Rows: 'What Lies Beneath' with Naomi Polonsky at Murray Edwards College08 Jul 202200:34:15

Hi Pomcats! We hope you’re having a great summer? The Pomcast is currently on a summer break, but we’re bringing you a bonus episode to enjoy! We’re talking to Naomi Polonsky, an assistant curator at Murray Edwards College in Cambridge and learning all about the current exhibition ‘What Lies Beneath; Woman, Politics, Textiles’.

We were lucky enough to have a private tour of the exhibition and have a chat with Naomi afterwards about the art works and creating the show. This episode is the recording of our interview with Naomi where we find out about the exhibition and the Woman’s Art Collection, the largest collection of modern and contemporary art by women!

The exhibition is on until 28th August, but if you can’t make it person, you can take the virtual tour online at womensart.murrayedwards.cam.ac.uk. Thanks so much to Naomi and to Laura Mosely who organised this visit for us!

Episode 68 – Sam Topley17 Dec 202100:38:31

Hi Pomcasts, welcome to the penultimate episode of the year! We’re delighted to be joined by guest interviewer Belinda Johnson, a fellow member of the Pom Pom team who had a chat with sound artist Sam Topley.

Before we got to the interview, it was only right that we had a chat with Belinda and introduced her to you lovely listeners. As well as finding out a little more about her role at Pom Pom and her journey through the world of knitting, Belinda mused on the patterns that are currently gracing her needles. These included the currently hibernating Eirys from Ready Set Raglan (just awaiting that final ball of De Rerum Natura Gilliatt!), plus Grainne, which is also from Ready Set Raglan, the delightfully named ‘project cookie monster’! Belinda also lamented the currently frogged Trembita mittens she was working on, but confirms that the pattern is so easy that she’ll be restarting these very soon.

It was music to our ears to find out that Sam Topley was going to be a guest on the pomcast! Sam is a sound artist and researcher working with textiles to create handmade electronic musical instruments and interactive sound art work. Her collaborative projects explore ideas in craftivism, using DIY fibre crafting to engage new audiences with experimental music making. Thanks Sam!

Episode 67 – What we do in the stitches!03 Dec 202100:27:49

We’re talking about our exciting book projects for next year! Coming in 2022 is our baby and kids pattern book Minipom, which will feature scaled down versions of some classic Pom Pom designs and new patterns too. We’re also working with sock aficionado Rachel Coopey on a sock book (surprise!) which will be akin to Ready Set Raglan

On the horizon as well is our Spring Issue 40, which is inspired by ‘dreamworlds’ and features lots of dreamy and ethereal designs. The pals also discuss what they're enjoying and watching at the moment!

Episode 65 – Pomcast groove!05 Nov 202100:30:20

Hi Pomcats! The kettle’s on and we’ve saved a space for you! Come join us with your craft of choice and catch up on all Pom Pom news and musings from Sophie and Lydia.

So, what have we been up to? Sophie took Lydia’s recommendation from episode 63 and made the trip to see Paula Rego at Tate Britain, what a moving exhibition! Lydia has been navigating a house move, but has squeezed in seeing some live music and has finished reading the latest Sally Rooney novel. The pals also discuss their ideas for starting a repair cafe and are looking for advice, have any listeners taken part in something like this?

We’re also marking our calendars for the pre-order release of Interpretations Volume 8, which will be on 9th November! We were very excited to have received the delivery of this beautiful publication at the UK studio recently. Behind the scenes we’re getting Issue 39 ready to land on doormats and in post boxes around the world, and Sophie has made a start on the crochet cardi Rockmore! She could be playing yarn chicken with this one, but is in love with this intuitive stitch pattern.

Episode 64 – Kiyomi and Sachiko Burgin22 Oct 202100:39:34

Hi Pomcats! Autumn is in full swing for many of us, what are your knitting plans this season? Well, what better way to get inspired than to cosy up with our latest episode and enjoy our chat with authors Kiyomi and Sachiko Burgin.

We wanted to hear all about their recent Pom Pom Press publication, Moon and TurtleThis collaborative project between the twin sisters infuses unique and contemporary design details with classic knitwear styles, and features lots of easy instructions to make a custom fit. We also chat about what it was like producing a book during the pandemic, the process of working together and the important meaning behind the book's title.

Of course Lydia and Sophie had to have a chat about what projects would find their way onto their needles next! We give a shout out to the Pokapoka hat and the Zenar socks. A fav amongst most of the Pom team is the cover star Kordy (did you see the swatching blog post here?) and the cosy cabled cardigan Cesium.

Episode 62 – Gudrun Johnston24 Sep 202100:42:44

Hi Pomcats, did you miss us? Well we missed you! After a short respite, we’re renewed and ready to start this next chapter of knit chat goodness. We’re trying a new schedule too, so instead of a monthly offering, you can look forward to a new Pomcast episode every two weeks! We’ll also be alternating between dedicated interview episodes and ones that focus on Pom news and knitting/craft chat! You’ll also see that our logo has had a digital lick of paint thanks to the talented Amy Blackwell!

For this audio offering, we’re getting cosy with Gudrun Johnston and hearing all about her upcoming release The Shetland Trader, Book Three: Heritage. For this collection Gudrun has taken the designs from her mothers made-to-order knitwear business run in the 1970s and updated them for contemporary knitters. This publication has been so thoughtfully researched, with Gudrun exploring the family archives and playing ‘knit detective’ with historical samples, it was a pleasure to hear more about how she put together Book Three.

We chat a little bit about what you can expect, and want to remind you to mark your calendars for the previews on 27th April! We’re also giving you some behind the scenes information about our recent sock book shoot! This publication will be similar to Ready Set Raglan, and we were delighted to work with sock aficionado Rachel Coopey on this project.

Do you love stationery? We feel there must be an overlap with those that love knitting and those who delight in luxury pens and drawing tools? Well, for Lydia this certainly is the case and is enjoying her new Caran D'Ache Neocolor crayons. And for Sophie, she is reviling in the glamor, drama and fun that is the latest season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. And of course, the episode ends with our thoughts on two perhaps lesser known museums, the Shell Museum and the Pencil Museum.
