Do you struggle to find hotel rooms in Europe that can accommodate your entire family? Many European hotels limit occupancy to just two guests per room, leaving families either piecing together multiple bookings or endlessly searching for those rare properties that actually sleep four or more. And because of strict occupancy rules, you can't just show up with extra kids and hope for the best — some hotels will turn you away at check-in.

54. The Golden Key to Travel: Hyatt Globalist Status Unveiled12 Dec 202300:57:12

In today's episode, we're diving headfirst into World of Hyatt's Globalist status. It's no secret that we have a bit of a love affair with Hyatt's loyalty program, and in this episode, we're spilling all the details on why this particular status holds a special place in our points and miles hearts.

What exactly is Hyatt Globalist status, and why are we so enamored with it? Simply put, it's the pinnacle of Hyatt's loyalty program, offering a plethora of benefits that can transform a regular hotel stay into a luxury experience. From free breakfasts for the entire family to room upgrades and late checkouts, the perks are generous and can add significant value to your travels.

But let's talk about how one earns this coveted status. The traditional route requires either 60 qualifying nights at Hyatt properties or accumulating 100,000 base points. However, let's not overlook the power of Hyatt credit cards in this equation. These cards can significantly lower the barrier to achieving Globalist status by offering qualifying nights as part of their benefits.

During our episode, we shared our personal experiences with Hyatt Globalist status and how we've leveraged credit card spending, strategic booking, and even the occasional 'mattress run' to maintain our status. Whether it's the little things like enjoying a peaceful breakfast with our families or the luxury of sprawling out in a suite upgrade, these experiences have solidified our loyalty to Hyatt.

But here's a crucial point: while we're huge proponents of Hyatt Globalist status, it may not be the right fit for everyone. It all boils down to how often you travel and where you stay. If your travel style aligns with what Hyatt offers, then pursuing Globalist status can be incredibly rewarding.

This episode wasn't just about sharing our tips and tricks; it's about showing you the potential of points and how it can unlock experiences you might have thought were out of reach. If you're intrigued and want to dive deeper into Hyatt Globalist status, hit play to listen to the full episode. Remember, the world is waiting for you to explore it – one Hyatt stay at a time!

Today, we're diving into our adventures at Secrets Resorts. While Alex and Jess basked in the sun at Impression Moxché by Secrets in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Pam had her own journey at Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica. So, if you're yearning for the inside scoop on Secrets Resorts, you're in the right place!

Let's kick things off by talking about what Secrets Resorts really are. Last year, Hyatt decided to amp up its resort game by acquiring a slew of all-inclusive resorts, and guess who's now donning the Hyatt crown? Yup, Secrets. Falling under the grand "World of Hyatt" program, Secrets is a dream for adults looking to escape and relax in luxury. It's exclusive, all-inclusive, and purely for adults. And with prime locations in countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and even Spain, the allure is hard to resist. The deal gets even sweeter when you consider the benefits of using Hyatt points at Secrets.

Now, let's delve into our personal experiences! Pam details her stay at Secrets Papagayo (the good and the bad)! Then Alex and Jess dive into their stay at Impression Moxché. Nestled right next to the regular Secrets Moxché, it's a tad bit pricier, but they think it's worth every point!

Bringing it all together, while both Secrets Resorts bring their own flavor to the table, there's no denying that the quality, cost, and experience can vary. But hey, at the end of the day, a free trip to an exotic locale is still a win in our books! If our experiences have got you itching to rack up those Hyatt points and set off on your own Secrets adventure, don't forget to check out our Ultimate Guide to Hyatt, linked below.

Now, imagine the thrill of having a companion fly alongside you for nearly free (just the taxes and fees) for up to two years. That's the magic of the Southwest Companion Pass. If you've yet to experience this, it's one of the best deals in the award travel world.

But how do you get this coveted pass? You could fly a hundred one-way trips in a year, but who's got the time? The more practical route involves amassing 135,000 Southwest points within a year. Luckily, Southwest offers a variety of credit cards, and the points earned from the credit card welcome offers count towards the points needed for the Companion Pass.

Timing is crucial. Think about beginning this journey towards the end of the year. Why? Because by the time you hit your minimum spend, a new year beckons. This strategy ensures you make the most of the pass for nearly two full years. And hey, if you're strategizing with a partner, there's a way both of you can earn the Companion Pass simultaneously. It's all about the game plan!

Are you ready to discover how to unlock one of the greatest travel tips out there? Hit play to discover the ins and outs of Southwest's Companion Pass. Happy travels!

43. Flying Smart: What, Why, and How to Book a Positioning Flight26 Sep 202300:35:34

In this episode, we cover positioning flights—what they are, why they're important, and how we use them to our advantage. Positioning flights can be a smart way to maximize travel rewards and ensure we get to our desired destinations efficiently.

At its core, a positioning flight is a short, separate flight that helps travelers reach a major hub airport (often times with better deals). The beauty is, you don't necessarily need to stick to the same airline.

Alex stresses that timing is crucial when it comes to positioning flights. Since they're usually on different airlines and aren't connected itineraries, missing a flight could spell trouble.

Another perk of positioning flights is the flexibility it affords when using points and miles. In the face of delays or system outages, being able to switch airlines quickly using your rewards points can be a lifesaver.

Alex tackles the topic of traveling with a family and its challenges, especially when it comes to positioning flights. For many, arriving a day early and staying at a hotel near the airport can alleviate the stress of long airport waits, especially with kids.

So, fellow travelers, positioning flights might be an extra step, but they're often worth the effort for the savings and options they unlock. Curious about more insider tips and strategies? Hit play to hear the full conversation and immerse yourself in the world of traveling on points!

When it comes to accommodations in New York City, we have a range of recommendations. There is the highly rated and luxurious Park Hyatt New York, known for its spacious rooms and impressive indoor pool. Jess suggests the family-friendly Residence Inn New York Manhattan/Midtown East, which offers complimentary breakfast and spacious rooms with kitchenettes.

32. Demystifying Business Cards: Easy Qualification and Maximum Rewards11 Jul 202300:29:01

Hey there! We're Alex, Pam, and Jess, the Travel Mom Squad. Today, we're diving into the world of business cards and why they're essential for maximizing points and miles.

Business cards are a game-changer in traveling on points. They don't count towards the Chase 5/24 rule, except for a few exceptions like Discover and Capital One. This means you can keep opening new business cards, earning more points and miles.

Qualifying for a business card is easier than you think. While you can still take advantage of personal cards, business cards offer more significant opportunities for accumulating points. Higher welcome offers and increased flexibility make them a valuable tool in your award travel journey.

One of the best things about business cards is that they open up a whole new world of credit card options. You'll find cards with generous welcome offers ranging from 75,000 to 200,000 points. That means more points for flights, hotels, and other travel expenses.

Now, some of you might be hesitant about getting a business card. We understand. But let us assure you that you can do it! Don't let the fear of not having a traditional business hold you back. Get creative, explore side hustles, and open the door to more rewards.

If you're ready to supercharge your travel game, hit play now and listen to our latest episode. We'll dive deeper into the world of business cards, sharing tips, insights, and personal experiences. Get ready to take your points and miles to new heights. Happy traveling!

30. The Hyatt Hype: Our Favorite Hotel Chain To Earn Points27 Jun 202300:41:24

If you're a regular listener of the Travel Mom Squad podcast, you know that we're all about sharing tips and tricks to make the most out of our global adventures. This week, we're giving you a deep dive into one of our all-time favorite hotel chains—Hyatt!

On this episode, we - Pam, Alex, and Jess - opened up about our journey to becoming Hyatt superfans, despite having previously dabbled with a variety of hotel rewards programs. We let you in on why Hyatt has us singing its praises, revealing the alluring benefits of the Hyatt program.

Interestingly, we didn't always have this love for Hyatt. Our transition from hotel free-agents to Hyatt die-hards was gradual, evolving from a combination of disappointment with other hotel rewards programs and the enticing advantages offered by Hyatt.

The game-changer? The real value of Hyatt started to shine when other hotel rewards programs began to slowly devalue their points. Amidst the 2020 pandemic, Hyatt cleverly made it much simpler to achieve their coveted Globalist status, igniting a spark of interest among travelers. Pam summed it up perfectly: once you taste the perks of being a Globalist, you simply can't go back.

In addition to the irresistible Globalist status, we talked about the ease of earning Hyatt points, particularly compared to other hotel brands. With Hyatt's beneficial partnership with Chase, we can effortlessly accumulate points through Hyatt Personal and Business Cards, as well as Chase's Ultimate Rewards cards like the Sapphire Preferred, Reserve, Freedom Flex, Freedom Unlimited, and Ink Cards.

We also reminisce about our favorite Hyatt stays to date, leaving you daydreaming about fantastic locations and luxurious hotel experiences. We won't spoil the surprises, but let's just say these stories might just inspire your next vacation destination.

Whether you're already a fan or just Hyatt-curious, this episode offers insights that can turn your travel dreams into affordable realities. So tune in, take notes, and who knows, you might find yourself joining Team Hyatt by the end! Until the next episode, keep exploring and happy traveling!

29. A Scottish Adventure: How We Traveled On Points To Scotland20 Jun 202300:39:45

Welcome back to the show! Today, Pam and Jess are excited to share their incredible adventures in Scotland. Scotland holds a special place in our hearts, and we can't wait to share the scoop with you!

Let's start with Pam's journey. It was a nail-biter as she narrowly caught her flight to Edinburgh after dealing with a delayed positioning flight from Denver to Newark. But the icing on the cake? She scored Air France business class seats for just 58K Amex points, thanks to a fantastic transfer bonus. Talk about getting luxury for less!

Now, let's dive into Jess's success. On their first Scottish adventure, her family of 6 used a whopping 360,000 United miles, flying from Houston to Chicago and finally landing in the enchanting city of Edinburgh. On their second trip, they took advantage of the Singapore fifth freedom flight, scoring direct flights from Houston to Manchester for just 25,000 miles per person each way. A fantastic deal for a family of six!

Despite our different stories, Scotland captured our hearts with its stunning beauty and left us with treasured memories. And the best part? We accomplished it all without breaking the bank, thanks to our award travel skills.

If you're itching to hear more about our Scottish escapades and learn insider tips on traveling on points, hit that play button and tune into the full episode.

28. Flight or Hotel First? Our Ultimate Guide to Booking Trips13 Jun 202300:38:40

Maybe you've played the points game, your points and miles are at the ready, and now the daunting task of booking and planning your trip is up next. Overwhelmed? Don't be. Today, we're sharing a quick guide on how we make the most of points and miles when planning our trips!

Alex shares that she always puts her accommodation first when planning a Hawaiian escape. With a multitude of flights available, securing a hotel takes precedence. However, when she plans for a European journey, it's all about the luxurious comfort of a business class seat before anything else. For equally appealing destinations and flights, such as the Maldives, she often finds herself doing a bit of back-and-forth to get everything perfectly synced.

Our seasoned traveler, Pam, is all about prioritizing comfort. For her, securing a premium flight often takes priority, sometimes even before settling on the destination. An extraordinary flight can become a memorable experience in itself, and that's exactly what Pam seeks.

On the flip side, Jess leans towards booking hotels first. With easier cancellation policies and point redemptions, she sees less risk in this approach. This strategy becomes especially beneficial when flying with airlines like Southwest, which only releases their flight schedules five to six months in advance.

A valuable tip from Alex for those planning domestic flights: start with Google Flights. Once you have a few suitable options shortlisted, check the airlines' websites for point requirements. If you find yourself short on points, our cheat sheet is there to help you identify potential point transfer options.

In this episode, we discuss our recent trips to Italy and Switzerland and share the smart tricks we used to travel in style while saving a fortune.

First up, Jess spilled the beans about her trip to Italy. She shared a fantastic tip about Fifth Freedom flights, where airlines operate between two foreign countries. In her case, it was an Emirates flight from JFK to Milan. Bet you didn't know you could use your points like that, did you?

But, the cherry on top was the opulent experience aboard Emirates first class. We're talking top-class service, comfy seats, and exceptional food and drink. She even mentioned an onboard lounge serving espresso martinis mid-flight—now that's flying in style!

Switching gears, Alex and Pam shared their own adventure to Switzerland, which had its own unique itinerary. Opting for a direct flight from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam on KLM, they cleverly timed their journey to avoid the worst of jet lag. They managed to enjoy dinner, watch a movie, sleep, and wake up for breakfast on the plane before reaching Amsterdam. Talk about efficient planning!

26. Beyond Points and Miles: Uncovering Hidden Credit Card Perks30 May 202300:27:35

Today we let you in on some of the hidden benefits of credit cards that have saved our day more than once! The points and miles are great, but the added perks? They're the unsung heroes of some of our travel stories!

We begin with primary car rental insurance, a godsend for any traveler. Jess explains why she prioritizes this feature over anything else, even meeting a minimum spend.

You'll also hear Pam express how much simpler and stress-free her travels have become.

Then there's delayed, lost, or damaged baggage coverage. Alex and Pam share their personal experiences. During a trip to Greece, Pam's luggage was delayed for three days.

In another incident, Alex's stroller was damaged during a Southwest flight. Since she'd paid the taxes and fees with her Chase Sapphire Preferred, she was able to claim reimbursement for the damaged stroller.

If you are still reading, you can probably tell that credit cards have some massive perks beyond just the points and miles. We can't imagine how these stories would have ended up without the hidden benefits of these cards. (Check out the links below to learn more!)

No one loves the annual fees of credit cards, but what if they could save you hundreds on travel? Free-night certificates are one of the most valuable perks you can earn from hotel credit cards, and with the right strategy, they can easily pay for themselves year after year. While many travelers cancel their cards after claiming the welcome bonus, the savvy few know that some cards deliver ongoing value, thanks to these certificates.

In this episode, the Travel Mom Squad breaks down how hotel free-night certificates from Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, and IHG can transform your travel planning. 23. The Hawaiian Hyatt Showdown: Grand Hyatt Kauai vs. Hyatt Regency Maui09 May 202300:58:37

Today, we (Alex, Pam, and Jess) shared our experiences and compared two fantastic Hyatt properties in Hawaii - the Grand Hyatt Kauai and the Hyatt Regency Maui. Let's dive into our adventure and see which resort came out on top!

First, let's talk about the booking process. We booked our stays using Hyatt points, which we mostly earned through Chase Ultimate Rewards cards. We highlighted the incredible value of using points for these luxury resorts, as award stays at Hyatt properties don't incur any resort fees or taxes. Can you imagine staying at a luxurious hotel for $0? Yep, that's right - zero dollars!

Now let's dive into our experiences at the resorts. Jess shared her thoughts on the Grand Hyatt Kauai, describing it as beautiful but enormous. You'll definitely get your steps in, as she mentioned clocking in over 15,000 steps just by staying on the property. The Grand Hyatt Kauai is spread out horizontally, while the Hyatt Regency Maui is built vertically. While we felt the rooms at the Grand Hyatt Kauai needed some updating, the hotel is in the process of renovating and upgrading all of their rooms.

As for the Hyatt Regency Maui, Alex and Pam both had upgraded rooms with a king bed, a queen bed, and a sofa bed. We found the rooms spacious and perfect for a family. The layout of the resort is more compact compared to the Grand Hyatt Kauai, but still offers a beautiful experience.

In terms of amenities, all three of us have Globalist status, which granted us access to club lounges, free valet parking, upgraded rooms, and complimentary breakfasts. We were amazed by the value we received during our stays.

So, who won the battle of the Hawaiian Hyatts? The verdict is still out, as each resort offers unique experiences and layouts. Both the Grand Hyatt Kauai and the Hyatt Regency Maui provide luxurious accommodations and amenities, making them excellent choices for your next Hawaiian vacation.

21. The Art of Credit Card Points: Our Sign-Up Offers vs. Everyday Spending Strategies25 Apr 202300:44:14

In today's special episode, we'll be discussing the evolution of our credit card strategies over time. We will be sharing insights into our unique approaches and how we have adapted our points stratagies over the years!

Jess began her journey of traveling on points back in 2015, initially focusing on cards with no annual fees. She was hesitant to open business cards, and her primary goal was to secure flights for her family. However, her strategy has since evolved, and business cards now play a key role in her overall plan.

Pam's experience was quite different. She was unaware of the points world until her daughter, Alex, introduced her to the concept. Without a clear plan, Pam simply opened as many cards as possible, and surprisingly, this "no strategy" approach has proven to be quite successful over the years.

Meanwhile, Alex's journey began with a specific goal: a trip to Hawaii. She and her husband targeted particular cards to reach their dream destination. Once accomplished, Alex shifted her focus to cards offering the best deals at the time, accumulating a cache of points to plan trips based on her existing rewards.

One of our favorite parts of traveling on points is there is no RIGHT or WRONG way to do it! So, whether you're new to this or a seasoned pro, stick around and let's learn from each other's strategies and experiences! :)

We are the Travel Mom Squad and have visited Paris multiple times, and we're excited to share our tips with you.

Paris is a destination that is on top of many bucket lists, and for good reason. The food, the Eiffel Tower, and the street musicians create an incredible atmosphere that you won't find anywhere else. Plus, it's even better when you are visiting Paris on points and miles.

When it comes to flights, we've used different airlines, but United is a great option for getting to Paris. They usually offer round-trip flights for 60,000 points in economy, but the prices can double during peak seasons. If you find that flights out of your airport are too expensive, try flying out of a bigger airport. This trick, called "positioning," can save you a lot of money.

You may be thinking, what about hotels? Pam has stayed at a few hotels in Paris, but her favorite is the Hyatt Regency Paris Etoile. Hit play to learn all our best tips and tricks about the best places to stay in Paris! (If you pick the right place, you may even see a celebrity!)

Whether you love to dance, explore, eat fantastic food, shop, or just people-watch, Paris has the best experiences for everyone in the family! 19. The Art of Smart Spending: Tips and Tricks to Meet Minimum Spend Requirements11 Apr 202300:37:52

Let's talk about credit card minimum spend! This is a GAME CHANGER for racking up those valuable points and miles fast. If you're new to traveling on points, this concept may seem a bit daunting, but don't worry, we've got some tips and tricks to help you out.

First off, we define what we mean by minimum spend. It's the minimum amount you need to spend on a credit card within a specified timeframe to earn a welcome offer. For example, you may need to spend $4,000 in the first three months to earn 60,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points or 75,000 Capital One Venture Miles.

Now, you may be thinking, "How on earth am I going to spend $4,000 in three months?" But the truth is, it's easier than you think. You don't need to be spending frivolously or charging things you don't need. We're talking about charging your everyday expenses like groceries, gas, utilities, phone bills, eating out, and even medical expenses. You can even prepay some bills ahead of time to give yourself a boost!

Trust us, meeting minimum spend requirements is easier than you think. Just charge your everyday expenses and pay them off in-full each month. Be sure to choose credit cards with minimum spend requirements that fit your budget, and don't go into debt just to earn points. With these tips and tricks, you'll be earning points and miles in no time!

P.S.—

Make sure to stick around until the end as we'll be sharing some of the craziest things we've done to hit minimum spend requirements. You won't want to miss it—it's sure to give you a good laugh!

17. Points and Miles: What's The Difference and How To Get More Of Both28 Mar 202300:31:36

Hey there! It's your favorite Travel Mom Squad, Pam, Jess, and Alex, coming to you with another episode! Today, we're going to talk about one of our favorite topics...can you guess what it is? Points and Miles of course!

One of our biggest FAQs is - what's the difference between points and miles? We will give you the run down and explain why we prefer flexible points and how to find your fastest path to Traveling On Points to your way dream vacations.

To kick things off let's start with the basics. What's the difference between points and miles? Honestly, it doesn't really matter. They're basically the same thing. Points are usually used by banks and hotels, while airlines use miles. But we often use them interchangeably because they both mean free travel!

Flexible points: These are our absolute favorite because they're so, well, flexible!

With flexible points, you can transfer them to various airline and hotel partners, which means you have so many more options when it comes to booking your travel. Our favorite flexible points come from the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. You can transfer those points to partners like Hyatt, United, and Southwest, which gives you so much more selection when it comes to booking your flights and hotels.

On the other hand, fixed point cards, like co-branded cards, are more limiting. If you have a Southwest card, you can only redeem those points for Southwest flights. If you have a Hyatt card, you can only use your points to book Hyatt hotel stays. This can be frustrating if you don't have a lot of options when it comes to redeeming your points. That's why we prefer flexible points because they give us so much more freedom.

We also recommend that you focus on collecting flexible points and miles, especially if you don't know what your travel plans are. They give you so much more flexibility and you can transfer them to different partners depending on your needs. However, there are times when fixed-value point cards can come in handy. If you know you're going to book a flight on United, for example, it might make sense to open a United card so you can save your flexible points for something else.

Overall, we hope this episode helps you understand the difference between points and miles, as well as shows how to find the best deals for your goals. Remember, the key to traveling on points is being flexible and taking advantage of the best deals and offers that come your way…and of course, have fun! Happy Traveling!

16. Points & Pixie Dust: Travel On Points and Miles To A Dream Disney Vacation21 Mar 202300:30:01

Dust off your mouse ears and get ready for a Family Trip to Disney! Hey, it's Alex and Jess here, your favorite part of the Travel Mom Squad! (Just kidding, Pam! We miss you! Pam is our traveling the world, so it's just us two today.)

In this show we're going to share some tips on how you can turn your dream trip to Disneyland into reality without breaking the bank. We'll be covering how to save on flights, hotels, and park tickets, all with the help of points and miles. Plus, our own tips and tricks we have picked up after a few Disney trips! So, let's dive right in!

First things first, let's talk about flights. We both prefer to fly Southwest, and our favorite airport to fly into is John Wayne, which is around 20-30 minutes away from Disneyland. It's smaller and easier to navigate than LAX. (Which is a nightmare we try to avoid at all costs) Another good option if you can't find direct flights to John Wayne is Long Beach, another smaller airport that's easy to navigate.

One of the biggest differences between Disney World and Disneyland is that Disneyland has a ton of hotel options within walking distance, making it much easier to redeem points and miles. It's also a great place to use your free night certificates from co-branded hotel credit cards like Hyatt, Marriott, or IHG.

We both had great experiences using our free night certificates at the Hyatt Place, which is perfect for families, as it can accommodate more than four people. It also offers a complimentary breakfast and is just a short walk from Disneyland. Other hotel options we've tried and loved include the Courtyard by Marriott and the Hilton Garden Inn, both of which are also within walking distance of the park.

As for park tickets, it's not always easy to find discounts, but it's definitely possible. In this show we share our #1 website which often has discounted park tickets! Additionally, keep an eye out for promotions from Disneyland and credit card rewards programs, as they may offer discounted or even free tickets from time to time.

Disneyland is a fantastic destination for a family vacation, and with the help of points and miles, it doesn't have to cost a fortune. We hope our tips help you save money on your next trip to the Happiest Place on Earth.

Don't forget to share your own tips and experiences in the comments below. Until next time, happy travels! If you wanna learn more about how to travel nearly free with your family, register for our free masterclass via the link below!

15. Hotel Free Night Certificates: How to Get Them and Where to Use Them14 Mar 202300:41:22

Hey there, it's Alex and Pam, the Travel Mom Squad! Today, we're going to share a little secret with you - how to score free hotel stays. Yes, you heard us right, FREE! We're talking about hotel free night certificates, and boy, do we have some stories to tell.

First off, let's talk about what they are and how you can get them. These are certificates that can be redeemed for a free night's stay at a hotel. You can earn them in a few different ways, like signing up for a hotel-branded credit card or staying a certain number of nights with a hotel.

But how do you actually make it happen? Hit play to hear our secrets! We're going to spill the beans on two of our favorite hotel chains that offer free night certificates - IHG and Hyatt.

With IHG, you can snag a free night certificate every year by having either their personal or business credit card. The best part? There's no limit on the amount of points you can use to top off your certificate.

So, you can stay in some pretty swanky places without breaking the bank. Just ask Pam, who recently used hers to stay at a super cool 50s-inspired hotel in Sydney, Australia! As for Hyatt, they offer a category one to four free night every year on your card anniversary. But that's not all, you can earn additional certificates by playing "Hyatt Bingo" and staying at different brands or by spending $15,000 on the personal card in a year.

Plus, once you hit 30 nights or accumulate 30 qualifying elite nights in a year, you'll get another free night certificate. Talk about stacking up those free stays! We've used our free night certificates in all sorts of ways, from watching fireworks on New Year's Eve in Amsterdam to snagging a quick overnight at an airport hotel.

The possibilities are endless. So, if you're a savvy traveler looking to stretch your budget, hotel free night certificates are definitely worth exploring. Trust us, your wallet will thank you!
