The Essence of Life27 Aug 202400:32:23

Thomas shares deep insights into how we can embody the soul's wisdom and increase our capacity to be present and form a deeper alliance with life. He shares tools and practices for becoming more grounded and spacious in our daily lives, and in challenging situations, and how that gives us the courage, curiosity, and strength to turn difficulties into growth, expansion, and wisdom.

He also offers embodiment practices to help us connect our physical and emotional data streams, creating a more coherent awareness of our internal processes, and increasing our natural intuition and capacity for change.

As Thomas explains, we are all part of an interconnected world, but trauma tends to create a sense of separation. Reconnecting to the essence of life helps us develop a deeper sense of ourselves so that we can achieve greater regulation and resilience.

Julia Kim | Holistic Economic Healing20 Aug 202400:53:42

Thomas is joined by global wellbeing and wellbeing economics expert, program facilitator, and researcher, Julia Kim. They discuss how Bhutan's holistic approach to economics, deeply rooted in spiritual and cultural values, prioritizes individual and collective happiness and wellbeing over profit and expansion of capital.

Julia explains the concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH) in Bhutan, contrasting it with the more conventional measure of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and how this system is more regenerative than extractive, less driven by overconsumption, and leads to better outcomes for people and the environment.

At a time of personal and collective trauma, burnout, and loss of hope, strengthening our capacity for inner wellbeing and authentic leadership is critical for enabling and inspiring wider organizational and systemic transformations.

Thomas discusses three foundational concepts of mystical teachings: Awareness, Movement, and Ethics.

He explores how mindfulness synchronizes our awareness with our perception, how Taoism and other wisdom traditions help us integrate the past so we can be more present in the flow of life, and how internal regulation and spaciousness make us less dependent on external rules and validation.

Thomas emphasizes how these powerful spiritual tools can help us to deepen, evolve, and unify our experience of life.

Cultivating Wisdom04 Jun 202400:28:59

On this episode of Point of Relation, Thomas dives deep into the foundational concept of wisdom - exploring what it takes to cultivate wisdom within ourselves, and how the individual effects of wisdom are deeply intertwined with the whole of humanity.

Thomas believes that wisdom arises when we grow and mature through difficult circumstances, integrating what we learn from these experiences and allowing ourselves to expand. Practicing presence can be challenging for many of us, but the more we integrate the past, the easier it gets.

Presence, as Thomas explains, is a beautiful gift that transcends time. And learning how to live in presence and connection with the whole of existence, the good and the bad, is how we develop wisdom.

What Do We Mean by Trauma?14 May 202400:25:16

Thomas shares his understanding of the nature of trauma and what is most essential for us to heal as individuals and as a collective.

He explains that trauma is not something that should be stigmatized, but is actually an intelligent evolutionary response that has helped humans to survive overwhelming and painful experiences. But when these events are not fully felt, processed, and integrated, they become frozen in our subconscious, making us reactive to triggers, and causing us to become either hyperactivated, or dissociated and numb.

Thomas explores how we can learn to instead be responsive to these moments, absorbing crucial learning from our reactions, giving us the space and awareness to be present, related, and open to inspiration for constructive solutions and positive change.

Francis Weller | Grieving in Community30 Apr 202400:59:05

Thomas is joined by Francis Weller, MFT - a psychotherapist, soul activist, and author of the bestselling, The Wild Edge of Sorrow. They discuss the need to return to a communal, ritual model of witnessing and processing grief.

Francis explains that grief requires two things: containment, and release, and he shares how a structured grief ritual creates a supportive space where grief can be honored, held, and digested. Francis calls this the “village mind” - a communal field that invites us to let go of our individualistic notions about healing. In this context, we can be reminded of our interconnectedness, opened to transmissions from our ancestors, and more receptive to intuition and creativity.

Francis invites us to see our collective crises as an initiation and grief as a reminder of the depth of our love. By understanding generational trauma, and slowing down to engage in communal practices, we can face these dark times with the courage and creativity needed to step into a radically new world.

He emphasizes the need for our societies to integrate collective and ancestral trauma so that we can stop repeating cycles of harm and learn to use our technology wisely.

Thomas stresses that this is possible and that creativity and art can help us to “speak the unspeakable” and harvest essential learning from the frozen wounds of the past.

This episode is part three of a four-part series on Technology, Innovation, and Consciousness.

Dr. Angel Acosta | AI: The Meeting of Consciousness and Technology, Part 216 Apr 202400:51:51

Thomas Hübl is joined by contemplative social scientist, consultant, and educator in leadership, social justice, and mindfulness, Dr. Angel Acosta. They discuss the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and its implications for our collective evolution as a species. In developing this technology, humans have unintentionally imbued it with our own biases and traumas.

Thomas and Angel reflect on what’s needed for our individual and collective nervous systems to adapt to so much overwhelming information, and how we can incorporate wisdom from mystical and spiritual traditions to guide us through this new frontier.

Can we examine how AI is mirroring humanity in order to achieve new levels of spiritual, emotional, and psychosocial evolution? Can we learn to use these imperfect tools to propel us forward in our interconnected evolution instead of perpetuating separation and polarization?

This episode is part two of a four-part series on Technology, Innovation, and Consciousness.

Elise Loehnen | Confronting Our Cultural Shadows02 Apr 202400:52:13

Thomas is joined by the author of the New York Times bestseller, On Our Best Behavior, and the host of the podcast “Pulling the Thread”, Elise Loehnen. They discuss what she calls the ‘cultural shadow’ of women - the ideas and behaviors that women have been socialized and conditioned to reject - and how women can embrace their complicated totality instead of repressing their authentic selves.

Elise’s recent book examines women’s social conditioning through the lens of the “seven deadly sins”. She and Thomas explore the trap of “goodness” for women and how the standards imposed on them lead to harmful repression, inequality, and resentment.

Elise stresses that people of all genders are harmed by unfair standards that are propagated through social power structures, and posits that we can free ourselves from these constricting gender roles by reframing our thinking and integrating our shadows instead of projecting them onto others.

Dr. Joy DeGruy | Dissolving the Barriers to Connection26 Mar 202400:57:55

On this episode of Point of Relation, Thomas is joined by internationally renowned researcher, educator, and author Dr. Joy DeGruy. They discuss how fear and ignorance impact our ability to recognize our fundamental oneness, and what’s needed for American society to come together to heal our collective wounds. Dr. DeGruy has spent a lengthy career in what she calls “heart work” - bringing people together to share their stories and generate a level of intimacy, empathy, and understanding that can only be gained through first-hand experience.

She and Thomas explore how trauma has been normalized for marginalized groups and the need for those with privilege to examine their biases, particularly anti-black racism, and use their power to advocate for what’s right. They discuss our collective tendency to try to avoid feelings and upsetting information, and how we must do the opposite and lean into these difficult learnings and conversations in order to stop repeating the harms that sow division.

Embodying Our Soul’s Capacity19 Mar 202400:41:52

Thomas explores the idea of spiritual insight and how having a consistent, disciplined, contemplative practice can increase the depth of meditation and allow genuine insights to emerge. As we travel through life, we can learn to see the movement that is inherent in everything and use our soul’s energy to realize our potential and discover where we are called to belong.

Thomas considers this idea of “finding your way” and how we can be open to our planet’s knowledge and evolution and use that information creatively to illuminate our own path forward. But that’s not the only key piece - we must also practice attunement within our personal relationships and absorb lessons from our ancestors so that we can move into the future without re-creating the past.

Dr. Sará King and Dr. Dan Siegel | The Neuroscience of Belonging12 Mar 202401:06:43

Thomas is joined by neuroscientist, education philosopher, and social entrepreneur Dr. Sará King, and clinical professor of psychiatry, co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA, and Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute Dr. Dan Siegel.

They discuss the concept of Intrapersonal Neurobiology - an interdisciplinary approach to understanding how our minds create our experiences, with an emphasis on the benefits of what Dr. Siegel refers to as “self-expanding emotions” - empathy, compassion, gratitude, and awe.

They dive deep into the idea of the collective nervous system, how we can learn to experience it, and how that can help us shift from defining the self as a solo entity to understanding humanity as fundamentally interconnected. In doing this, Dr. King and Dr. Siegel posit that we can create a stronger sense of belonging, increase our sustainability, and assist in the evolution of the planet instead of its destruction.

Frederic Laloux | Trauma-Informed Organizations27 Feb 202400:51:34

Thomas is joined by celebrated business thinker, social entrepreneur, Founder of "The Week", and author of Reinventing Organizations, Frederic Laloux. They discuss how hierarchy relies on certain people having power over others, and how this concept is antithetical to our true human nature, despite being deeply ingrained in society.

They explore Frederic’s work to help organizations shift to a “self-managing” model, and what it takes to get people on board. Frederic has learned that by bringing people together to surface their deepest assumptions about their way of operating, and examining what that implies about humanity, they can organically come to accept a non-hierarchical structure.

He and Thomas discuss how our economic and educational systems reify a worldview of scarcity and distrust, and how we would all benefit from a more communal society. They also dive deep into Frederic’s work on climate change, and how his organization “The Week” is creating spaces to process the harsh reality of environmental disaster so that we can discover new avenues to combat it without feeling alienated and alone.

Becoming and Belonging20 Feb 202400:18:19

Thomas discusses two forces that drive us as human beings: the will to become, and the will to belong. He explores how our formative parental relationships can either encourage or subdue our drive to become our authentic selves and how our early strategies to compensate for scarcity can influence our path as adults.

Thomas emphasizes the relationship between becoming and creativity and notes the harm caused by inhibiting a child’s freedom to be themselves. Ultimately, we all seek nourishing relationships imbued with supportive energy. And although trauma tends to reduce our spiritual energy, we can learn to reconnect to the source and get back to a place of abundance.

Bob Delaney & Harry Dunn | Transforming Trauma into Action06 Feb 202400:43:04

On this episode of Point of Relation, Thomas is joined by author, political candidate, and former US Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn, and author, consultant, and advocate for post-trauma awareness, Bob Delaney. They discuss the trauma faced by public servants, including those in law enforcement, and what can be done to foster healing and end cultural stigmas around therapy and mental health challenges.

Integrating the Past to Rewrite the Future30 Jan 202400:31:21

Thomas Hübl explores what motivates people to walk the spiritual path, and how it can be difficult to discern our true calling when our personal and societal environments are fragmented. He explains how being present with and processing our experiences allows us to fulfill our spiritual karma, heal inherited wounds, and close narrative circles that originated in the past.

Thomas defines karma as an unconscious energy that presents us with a choice: allow this energy to be passed on un-processed, or consciously process this energy so that we can light the way towards a more creative, authentic, and evolved future.

This episode was recorded during the 2018 Celebrate Life Festival.

Rev. angel Kyodo williams | Racial Healing and the Yearning to Be Seen22 Jan 202400:48:21

On this episode of Point of Relation, Thomas is joined by author, spiritual teacher, outspoken activist, and the founder of the Center for Transformative Change - Reverend angel Kyodo williams. They discuss the healing power of being seen as your true self, and how this creates the conditions for collective healing.

Rev. angel explores how systems of power and oppression have created divisions in our society and undermined our sense of belonging, especially for Black people and other marginalized groups. But in creating safe spaces that are resilient enough to allow our true selves and feelings to arise, we find relationality through our suffering, and begin to heal these culturally ingrained divisions.

And while this work is neither comfortable nor easy, our increasing willingness to sit with discomfort illustrates our innate desire for liberation and connectedness.

On this episode of Point of Relation, Thomas is joined by author, consultant, and advocate for post-trauma awareness, Bob Delaney. They discuss the profound impact of Bob’s time doing undercover work to infiltrate mafia crime families. He experienced intense shame and guilt from deceiving the people he was investigating, despite believing that the work was necessary.

He and Thomas discuss how Bob overcame the isolation and trauma of repressing these emotions, and how society can better serve the first responders who endure so much trauma in their lines of work.

Bob emphasizes the importance of having outlets to express emotions rather than repressing them and the need to improve attunement and relational capacities between these workers and the people they’re serving.

Post-Traumatic Learning and Sensitivity | A Q&A Episode09 Jan 202400:25:41

Thomas answers questions submitted by listeners. He explores how post-traumatic learning and growth can occur both individually and collectively. Collective healing is a powerful force that can help our societies evolve by surfacing past wounds that need to be addressed, giving us the opportunity to restore our social ethics, and helping to prevent similar traumatic events from occurring in the future.

He also discusses what causes a person to be “highly sensitive,” and how approaches to nervous system regulation and emotional grounding should be tailored to fit the needs of people with this type of refined perception.

They discuss the difficult nature of working in the humanitarian space to address the many injustices that people, particularly women, face worldwide. Abigail E. Disney | Moral Injury and the Complex Legacy of Disney30 Jul 202400:48:44

Thomas is joined by filmmaker, philanthropist, and activist Abigail Disney. They discuss how Abigail’s activism has been informed by the darker aspects of the Disney company and family legacy, and how that legacy is reflective of larger problems in American society.

They also dive deep into the idea of moral injury, which arises when individuals are forced to act against their ethical values, leading to deep psychological and emotional wounds. She and Thomas explore how moral injury can result from systemic failures and the personal struggles of those in conflict zones. Abigail critiques the tendency to flatten historical figures into one-dimensional heroes or villains, arguing for a more nuanced understanding of their actions and legacies.

She and Thomas agree on the need for collective healing processes to address the toxic impacts of hyper-individualism and the collective trauma of global conflicts. Abigail stresses the importance of remaining open to uncertainty, and advocates for humility and flexibility in addressing complex societal issues, suggesting that this approach is essential for building a more understanding and peaceful society.

MaryCatherine McDonald | The Intelligence of the Trauma Response19 Dec 202300:46:28

Thomas is joined by PhD trauma researcher, life coach, and the author of "Unbroken", MaryCatherine McDonald.

They discuss Dr. McDonald’s work to redefine our understanding of trauma and eliminate the stigma surrounding it. Using scientific research, and through the lens of her own experiences with trauma and grief, Dr. McDonald has developed a definition of trauma that describes it as “an unbearable emotional experience that lacks a relational home.”

She and Thomas explore how symptoms of trauma are adaptive rather than pathological, and how feeling ashamed of them inhibits our ability to heal. Dr. McDonald explains that healing is “an evolution and a becoming, not a destination that we arrive at,” and offers insight into how relational attunement and group trauma work can support us on this non-linear path.

Joana Breidenbach | Disinformation Through the Lens of Trauma07 Nov 202300:51:12

Thomas is joined by cultural anthropologist, social entrepreneur, and author, Joana Breidenbach. They discuss the ecosystem of disinformation that is fragmenting society and the systemic factors that contribute to it.

Joana explains the role that technology plays in how we obtain and interpret information, exploring the motives of those who spread disinformation, and the historical trends that have made it increasingly difficult for people to understand unfamiliar perspectives. She and Thomas also examine how individual and collective trauma can make us more susceptible to disinformation, and how greater self-reflection, embodiment, and humility can make us more resilient to it.

Rabbi Dr. Tirzah Firestone: Metabolizing Intergenerational Trauma24 Oct 202300:49:45

On this episode of Point of Relation, Thomas Hübl is joined by author, Jungian psychotherapist, and renowned Jewish scholar, Rabbi Dr. Tirzah Firestone. They discuss the centuries of trauma that have yet to be metabolized in our collective unconscious, and what we can do, both individually and collectively, to integrate and heal from this painful shared history.

She and Thomas explore how trauma lives in our nervous systems, and is transmitted across generations via epigenetics. They agree that we can start to meaningfully recover from these wounds by borrowing, with permission, the nutrition provided by wisdom traditions around the world.

Rabbi Firestone also shares an energy-raising exercise for sparking beautiful renewal.

Healing Across Divides: A Q&A Episode with Thomas Hübl17 Oct 202300:28:32

In this special Q&A episode, Thomas answers some insightful questions submitted by listeners during his recent live event with Dr. Gabor Maté, which focused on topics explored in Thomas’ recently released book - Attuned: Practicing Interdependence to Heal Our Trauma–And Our World.

The questions covered by Thomas explore how to practice attunement in an environment of harsh political polarization, why it’s difficult - but possible - to feel attuned to collective issues even when there is discord in your family or personal relationships, and that the numbness many of us feel in response to trauma is not a barrier to attunement but a valid experience that we would all benefit from attuning to.

Thomas is joined by contemplative social scientist, consultant, and educator in leadership, social justice, and mindfulness, Dr. Angel Acosta. They discuss Artificial Intelligence, or AI, and the radical shifts it is generating in our lives, our work, and our collective consciousness.

While AI holds incredible potential for the evolution of humanity, its creation and implementation also raise a number of serious ethical concerns.

Thomas and Dr. Acosta explore how this cutting-edge technology mirrors both the best and worst aspects of human society and how our approach to it can either create further discrimination and trauma or help us to better understand ourselves and collectively heal.

Key points discussed in this episode include:

✨How addressing the biases inherent in AI technology can create a leap forward in collective consciousness
✨The fear that occurs when new inventions arise, and how integrating trauma enables us to assess the situation with more clarity
✨The need to heal deep wounds in our collective unconscious so that they are not propagated by AI
✨How the widespread use of AI represents a major evolutionary moment for our species
✨Exploring what it would look like to develop AI for the specific purpose of healing trauma

Jack Kornfield - Healing Trauma Through Collective Meditation03 Oct 202301:16:25

Thomas Hübl is joined by writer, trained Buddhist monk, and meditation teacher, Jack Kornfield. They discuss how Buddhist meditation and mindfulness practices, in combination with more traditional forms of therapy, can help to heal individual and collective trauma.

Jack explores how his own traumatic experiences led him to Buddhism. Early in his spiritual journey, he spent extensive time in highly traumatized environments. There, he learned the importance of creating safe, ritual containers where people can come together to share and process their trauma.

He believes that mindful, loving awareness is a skill that anyone can learn, and it’s an essential practice for anyone seeking to heal their own trauma or be a compassionate witness to the trauma of others.

Ultimately, Jack believes that love is our most powerful tool to address the world’s most dire problems.
