202 | Your Podcast Stats Don't Define Your Worth (Here's Why Spotify Backed Off)19 May 202500:12:13

Spotify almost changed podcasting forever—by putting all your episode play counts on full display. Imagine every episode's stats right out in the open, for the world to judge. But then, they backed off. In this episode of Podtastic Audio, I'm breaking down why that change almost happened, why they reversed course, and what it means for us indie podcasters.

As someone who loves podcasting and does it because it's fun (not just for downloads), I dig into:

  • Why public play counts might hurt small shows more than help them
  • How podcast value isn't always reflected in numbers
  • The power of private growth and real listener impact
  • Why you should keep creating even when the numbers seem small

Whether you're getting 25 plays or 25,000, this episode is for anyone who's ever felt like the metrics don't tell the whole story—because they don't. Podcasting should be about connection, not comparison.

👉 Join me as I share my own journey, thoughts on Spotify's decision, and why your voice matters more than your views.

122 From Ideas to Impact: The Art of Storytelling with 5 Strategies for Podcasters13 Oct 202300:19:27

Podcasting is all about storytelling and keeping your audience captivated. Here are five tips for podcasters to tell better stories and maintain audience engagement:

  1. Know Your Audience and Niche: Understand who your target audience is and tailor your stories to their interests. Consider the demographics, preferences, and expectations of your listeners. Knowing your niche allows you to create content that resonates with your specific audience.
  2. Start Strong: Capture your audience's attention from the very beginning. A compelling and intriguing opening sets the tone for the entire episode. Use a hook, a captivating story snippet, or a thought-provoking question to draw listeners in and make them want to stay.
  3. Use Conversational and Engaging Language: Podcasting is an intimate medium, and listeners often feel a personal connection with the host. Use conversational language, be relatable, and inject personality into your storytelling. Imagine you're telling a story to a friend, and let your natural voice shine through.
  4. Create a Narrative Arc: Structure your podcast episodes with a clear narrative arc. Introduce the main idea or story, build tension or interest throughout the episode, and provide a satisfying resolution. This structure helps maintain a sense of progression and keeps listeners engaged from start to finish.
  5. Incorporate Sound and Production Elements: Enhance your storytelling with sound effects, music, and other production elements. These can add depth, atmosphere, and emotion to your stories. Be mindful not to overwhelm the narrative, but strategic use of sound can create a more immersive and engaging experience for your audience.

Remember, storytelling is an evolving skill, and practice is key. Pay attention to listener feedback, analyze what works well, and continuously refine your storytelling techniques. Experiment with different formats, styles, and approaches to keep your podcast content fresh and appealing to your audience.

BONUS EPISODE - Do You use a Podcast Promoter?06 Oct 202300:05:34

Podcast promoters often promise rapid audience growth but may use unethical tactics like fake reviews or misleading marketing. They might not prioritize a genuine connection between the podcaster and audience, risking long-term success. Building an authentic audience through organic methods tends to be more sustainable and trustworthy in the podcasting world.

121: Elevate Your Vibe: 8 Ways to Infuse Energy into Your Podcast02 Oct 202300:15:55

Creating a high-energy podcast can be challenging if the host isn't naturally energetic. However, there are several strategies you can employ to infuse energy into your podcast, even if you're not naturally high-energy. Here are some tips:

  1. Preparation and Passion: Thoroughly research and prepare for each episode. Knowing your material well can boost your confidence and energy. Choose topics that genuinely interest and excite you. Your passion for the subject can translate into a more engaging delivery.
  2. Vary Your Tone: While you may not be naturally high-energy, you can still vary your tone to add emphasis and interest to different parts of your podcast. Use inflection to convey excitement or curiosity, even if it's not at an extremely energetic level.
  3. Speak Clearly and Enthusiastically: Ensure your voice is clear and easy to understand. Enunciate your words, and speak with confidence. Even if you're not naturally energetic, you can still convey enthusiasm through your tone and pacing.
  4. Add Dynamic Elements: Incorporate music, sound effects, or brief audio clips to add energy to your podcast. These elements can create a more dynamic listening experience. Experiment with different audio editing techniques to enhance the overall production quality.
  5. Embrace Your Authentic Style: While it's essential to add energy, it's equally important to stay true to your authentic style. Authenticity can be engaging, even if it's not super energetic. Find the right balance that works for you and your audience.
  6. Incorporate Humor: Infuse humor into your podcast, even if it's more subtle or dry. Humor can lift the energy level and make your content more enjoyable. Share personal anecdotes or funny stories to connect with your audience.
  7. Engage with Your Audience: Encourage audience participation through Q&A sessions, polls, or feedback. Interaction can bring a livelier atmosphere to your podcast. Respond to listener comments and questions during the podcast to create a sense of community.
  8. Practice and Feedback: Practice your delivery to become more comfortable and confident. Practice can help you find the right rhythm and pacing for your podcast. Seek feedback from trusted friends or colleagues. They may provide valuable insights on how to enhance your energy level.

Remember, it's okay to be yourself. Your unique style and perspective can be a significant asset to your podcast. By incorporating these tips and finding what works best for you, you can create a podcast that is engaging and enjoyable for your audience.

BONUS EPISODE - Zoom PodTrak P4 for a Live Client Recording29 Sep 202300:06:16

Yesterday I had the opportunity to record an episode for my clients in person. It was quite a fun experience. Not only did I get a chance to meet them in person for the first time ever, but I also got the grand tour of the business. I really felt honored to be there.

I used my Zoom PodTrak P4 with 4 microphones and I was able to record the episode at their facility. And I did have to do a lot of editing on the audio to make sure they all sounded fantastic in the end.

But if you ever need to record 4 people at the same location easily, this is a way to do that.

120: iOS 17's Impact on Podcast Episode Artwork: What You Need to Know25 Sep 202300:26:39

Episode Artwork now available for iOS 17 in Apple Podcasts

Having your podcast available on Apple Podcasts is essential for reaching a broad and engaged audience.

  • Apple Podcasts is one of the most popular podcast platforms globally, boasting millions of active users. By listing your podcast there, you gain visibility and accessibility to a vast pool of potential listeners who trust the platform for quality content. Additionally, Apple Podcasts provides valuable analytics and user reviews that can help you improve your podcast's content and grow your audience further.
  • Being present on Apple Podcasts not only enhances your podcast's discoverability but also establishes credibility within the podcasting community. Therefore, if you want your podcast to have a significant impact and connect with a diverse and dedicated audience, Apple Podcasts is a must-have platform.

Episode artwork appears on devices with iOS 17 or later on the Now Playing screen and Queue; the Lock Screen and Control Center; in Up Next on Listen Now; on show and episode pages; and through link previews in other apps, including Messages, Mail, and on social media platforms.

This artwork is optional but is a great way to highlight the episode's content or guests while drawing in listeners with additional visual interest.

When episode artwork is not supplied, Apple Podcasts will continue to display show artwork. Apple Podcasts will also default to show artwork when multiple shows are presented together to help orient listeners.

Creators can publish episode artwork via RSS using their third-party hosting provider. For subscriber episodes, it can be uploaded in Apple Podcasts Connect.

Guidelines

  • Give your episode artwork a distinct visual branding separate from your show and channel artwork. Do not use your show cover as episode art.
  • Episode titles are displayed in the UI under the artwork so avoid repeating the episode title in episode art.
  • The episode art and show art are often displayed together, so listeners can see which show published the episode.
  • Keep all essential design elements within the Art Safe Area. Anything placed outside of the Art Safe Area is subject to cropping and or UI overlays.
  • Avoid placing essential design elements where the Safe Area and UI areas intersect.
  • Note that the UI text color will default to white. Use a background color that allows white UI text to be legible.

BONUS EPISODE - FREE Podcast Audio Grader20 Sep 202300:05:01

BONUS EPISODE

Podcast Audio Grader

Welcome to the Podcast Audio Quality Grader! This tool analyzes the audio quality of your podcast and provides feedback on several key metrics. The grading system is based on commonly accepted audio quality standards and is designed to help you improve your podcast's audio quality.

  • Loudness: It's like how loud or soft the sound of your podcast is. If it's too soft, people might have trouble hearing it, and if it's too loud, it might hurt their ears.
  • Peak: This is the loudest part of your podcast. If the peak is too high,it might sound distorted or uncomfortable, but if it's too low, the audio might lack impact.
  • Noise Floor: This is like the quiet hum you hear when no one is talking. If the noise floor is too high, it can be distracting, but if it's too low, your podcast will sound very clear and clean.
  • Dynamic Range: This is the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of your podcast. If the dynamic range is too big, it can be annoying because listeners will constantly need to adjust their volume. If it's too small, your podcast might sound flat and boring.

How it Graded this Episode:

Loudness Quality: High The overall loudness of your podcast is at a good level. It should be comfortably audible in most listening environments. Keep up the good work!

Peak Quality: High The maximum volume levels in your podcast are well-balanced. None of them are excessively loud that they risk causing distortion.

Noise floor Quality: Medium There's a moderate amount of noise. The spectral flatness suggests that your audio is somewhat noise-like. Reducing it could make your podcast clearer and more pleasant to listen to. Try using noise reduction tools during editing.

Dynamic range Quality: High Your podcast has a small dynamic range, which is excellent for ensuring a consistent listening experience. This shows that the volume levels between your loudest and quietest parts are well-balanced. Keep up the good work!

119 Perfecting Sound: The Art of Editing Great Audio for Podcasting18 Sep 202300:32:35

In the world of podcasting, content might be king, but the quality of your audio is the kingdom itself. Why? Because good audio can make or break your podcast. Here's why creating top-notch audio is crucial:

  1. Listener Experience: Your podcast is a medium of communication, and audio is the primary conduit for your message. When your audio is crisp, clear, and free from distractions like background noise and muffled voices, it provides a more enjoyable and engaging experience for your audience. A podcast with poor audio quality can be frustrating to listen to, leading to a loss of listeners.
  2. Professionalism: High-quality audio instantly lends an air of professionalism to your podcast. It shows that you care about your content and your audience's experience. People are more likely to trust and respect a podcast that sounds well-produced.
  3. Retention: Clear audio makes it easier for listeners to absorb your content. When listeners don't have to strain to hear or understand what's being said, they're more likely to stay engaged throughout the episode and even subscribe for more.
  4. Audience Growth: Great audio can help your podcast stand out in a crowded field. Word-of-mouth recommendations and positive reviews often mention audio quality as a deciding factor in whether someone gives your podcast a try.
  5. Versatility: High-quality audio allows you to repurpose your content more effectively. You can extract snippets for social media, create audiograms, or even compile the best bits into promotional material.
  6. Sponsorships and Collaborations: Brands and potential collaborators are more likely to partner with podcasts that prioritize audio quality. They want their message to be conveyed clearly and professionally.

So, how do you achieve great audio quality? Invest in good microphones, headphones, and audio editing software. Learn the art of sound editing, pay attention to acoustics, and use pop filters and shock mounts to minimize unwanted noise. Don't forget the importance of consistent levels and balanced sound. Remember, while content is vital, it's your audio quality that often makes the first impression. Make it a good one!

117 From Overwhelm to Inspiration: 7 Ways to Avoid Podcast Burnout30 Aug 202300:16:43

Podcasting can be a highly rewarding endeavor, but it can also be demanding and potentially lead to burnout if not managed well. Here are seven ways a podcaster can avoid burnout:

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Define clear and achievable goals for your podcast. Avoid setting unrealistic expectations for the frequency of episodes, listener numbers, or monetization. Setting achievable goals will reduce unnecessary pressure and stress.
  2. Create a Consistent Schedule: Establish a regular podcasting schedule that you can realistically maintain. Whether it's weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, consistency helps manage expectations for both you and your listeners.
  3. Batch Content Creation: Instead of creating episodes one by one, consider batching your content creation. This involves recording and editing multiple episodes in one sitting. This approach can help you maintain a consistent release schedule without constantly being in "production mode."
  4. Delegate and Outsource: You don't have to do everything yourself. Delegate tasks such as editing, social media management, or episode promotion to others if possible. Outsourcing certain tasks can free up your time and reduce the workload.
  5. Prioritize Self-Care: Remember to take care of yourself. Get enough sleep, engage in regular physical activity, and maintain a healthy diet. Engaging in activities you enjoy outside of podcasting can help prevent burnout.
  6. Set Boundaries: Clearly define boundaries for your podcasting activities. Avoid letting your podcasting endeavors encroach on personal time, and communicate these boundaries to your listeners, co-hosts, and collaborators.
  7. Stay Inspired: Continuously seek inspiration for your podcast. Explore new topics, formats, or interviewees to keep your content fresh and engaging. Staying excited about your podcast can prevent the monotony that can contribute to burnout.

Remember that burnout is a real concern, and it's important to monitor your mental and physical well-being. If you notice signs of burnout, such as increased stress, fatigue, or a lack of enthusiasm for your podcast, don't hesitate to take a break, seek support, or make necessary adjustments to your podcasting routine.

115 Sights and Sounds Unleashed: Harnessing the Power of Video and Audio for Audience Expansion15 Aug 202300:20:02

Happy Podcasting! I hope you are having a fantastic time along your podcast journey. As content creators, we are all wonder if we are serving our audience correctly. In this episode I talk about the choices me make as content creators and how these choices can impact your audience.

Adobe Podcast Enhance

In an age where content consumption habits are constantly evolving, content creators are presented with an array of mediums through which they can engage their audience. Among these, video and audio podcasts have emerged as two of the most potent tools for sharing content. By combining the strengths of both formats, creators can tap into a wider audience base and offer a more immersive experience.

  1. Captivating Visual Storytelling: Video podcasts offer the opportunity to go beyond the audio realm and deliver content through visual storytelling. This can be especially effective for showcasing demonstrations, interviews, tutorials, and events. The inclusion of visuals not only makes the content more engaging but also aids in conveying complex concepts that might be challenging to communicate through audio alone.
  2. Catering to Diverse Preferences: People consume content in various ways, and not everyone has the time or inclination to watch videos or listen to audio exclusively. By providing both options, content creators accommodate a broader range of preferences. Some may choose to listen during commutes or workouts, while others may prefer to watch during leisure moments. Offering both audio and video allows creators to reach and resonate with their audience, regardless of their consumption habits.
  3. Enhanced Engagement and Connection: Visual content fosters a stronger emotional connection with the audience. When viewers can see the speaker's expressions and body language, they feel more connected and engaged. This connection can be particularly important for building a loyal audience base, as it humanizes the content creator and encourages listeners/viewers to form a deeper bond.
  4. Tapping into SEO and Discoverability: Both audio and video podcasts provide opportunities for discoverability. Podcast directories, YouTube, and social media platforms have robust search functionalities that enable content to be found by relevant audiences. Utilizing proper titles, descriptions, and tags can significantly improve the chances of content being discovered through organic searches.
  5. Versatile Content Repurposing: Creating content in both video and audio formats opens the door to repurposing. Video podcasts can be edited into shorter clips for social media sharing or transformed into blog posts. Audio content can be transcribed and used as written content or repackaged as downloadable resources. This versatility maximizes the utility of each piece of content.
  6. Accessibility and Inclusivity: While video podcasts enhance engagement, they can also pose accessibility challenges for those with hearing impairments. Providing audio versions of the same content ensures that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can access and enjoy the content.

Conclusion: The landscape of content creation is evolving, and creators must adapt to the preferences of their audience. By utilizing both video and audio podcasts, content creators can create a comprehensive content strategy that reaches a wider audience, resonates on multiple levels, and provides greater engagement opportunities. The synergy between these formats opens doors for creative storytelling and ensures that content can be enjoyed by diverse audiences across various platforms. As content consumption habits continue to evolve, embracing this holistic approach will position creators for success in the ever-expanding digital realm.

114 Pillars of Podcasting: Building a Strong Foundation for Your Show's Success08 Aug 202300:24:36

I am back in San Diego CA, and back to my regular podcasting schedule. July 2023 has been quite an adventure and I'm so glad to back home. I was in Hawaii and New York all within the same week. Traveling the world and meeting new friends along the way.

On this episode I go over the 3 Pillars of Podcasting that we all should know when we create a show.

  1. Know why you are podcasting. Sounds simple, but we all have a different reason behind it. Everything starts with a Why
  2. Know who your podcast is for. Craft a show for a particular person, not for everyone.
  3. Know what kind of value your show will deliver to your audience. Value comes in many different forms, from knowledge to entertainment.
  4. And a Bonus Pillar!

While I was in New York last week I was a guest on The Basement Surge

113 Enhancing Your Podcast's Message with David Hooper of Build a BIG Podcast25 Jul 202301:03:34

I have been in vacation mode all last week. Flying home from the islands of Hawaii. What an incredible place to visit. To share my vacation with you, I created a Hawaiian audio experience at the beginning of this episode. Using theater of the mind to transport you to the islands of Hawaii through the power of audio. Especially by using "stereo" audio to set the soundscape needed to enhance the scene. Not all podcast media hosts publish your podcast in stereo. One example is Buzzsprout. They produce your podcast in mono only formats. Be careful if you are using stereo sounds to tell you message on a platform that doesn't use stereo.

Stereo audio can significantly enhance the soundscape of your podcast by creating a more immersive and dynamic listening experience for your audience. Unlike mono sound, which comes from a single source and can sometimes feel flat, stereo utilizes two separate channels, allowing for the placement of different audio elements in the left and right speakers. This spatial separation enables you to create a sense of depth and directionality, making it feel as if the listener is surrounded by the sounds. By judiciously using stereo panning, you can place voices and sound effects in specific locations, providing a more engaging and realistic atmosphere. Additionally, stereo can be employed to widen the soundstage, making the podcast feel more expansive and appealing to listeners. When used thoughtfully, stereo audio can add a layer of richness and creativity to your podcast, effectively enhancing your message and ultimately building a larger and more captivated audience.

Then I'm joined by David Hooper from Build a BIG Podcast. David Hooper is a media marketing expert based in Nashville, TN. He specializes in helping individuals and companies build audiences via broadcasting and podcasting. His latest book is Big Podcast – How To Grow Your Podcast Audience, Build Listener Loyalty, and Get Everybody Talking About Your Show.

112 Metrics that Matter: Making Sense of Podcast Stats and Adjusting to a Paid Website Builder11 Jul 202300:23:14

As content creators, we love to know if our message is really being heard by our audience. One known way to find that out is through podcast download metrics. As podcasters, we strive to create engaging content that resonates with our audience and garners the attention it deserves. While many metrics can gauge a podcast's success, the number of downloads often takes center stage. However, it's essential to understand that download figures alone may not paint the whole picture. So, let's delve into what really matters when publishing an episode.

  1. Quality Content: The foundation of any successful podcast lies in its content. Your audience is looking for valuable information, captivating stories, or thought-provoking discussions. Focus on delivering high-quality, well-researched, and engaging episodes that keep your listeners coming back for more. Consistency in content quality will ultimately drive more downloads and foster a loyal listener base.
  2. Clear Audio: A podcast's audio quality can make or break its success. Listeners appreciate crisp, clear audio that immerses them in the experience. Invest in a good microphone, use a quiet recording space, and edit your episodes to ensure optimal sound quality. Remember, your listeners are tuning in to listen, so prioritize delivering excellent audio.
  3. Effective Promotion: Producing great content is only half the battle. Promoting your podcast is crucial for expanding your listener base. Leverage social media platforms, collaborate with other podcasters, reach out to influencers in your niche, and engage with your audience. A well-executed promotional strategy can significantly boost your episode's visibility and, subsequently, your download numbers.
  4. Compelling Titles and Descriptions: Your podcast's title and episode descriptions act as the gateway to your content. Craft attention-grabbing titles that spark curiosity and accurately reflect the episode's essence. Accompany them with engaging descriptions that entice potential listeners to hit that "Play" button. A compelling title and description can make a significant difference in attracting new downloads.
  5. Audience Interaction and Feedback: Building a strong connection with your audience is vital for long-term podcast success. Encourage your listeners to provide feedback, share their thoughts, and participate in discussions. Engage with them on social media or through dedicated platforms like Discord. Actively incorporating their input can foster a sense of community and loyalty, resulting in increased downloads as satisfied listeners become enthusiastic advocates for your podcast.

While download numbers offer valuable insights into your podcast's reach, they should not be the sole focus. Concentrate on consistently producing high-quality content, ensuring exceptional audio, promoting effectively, creating captivating titles and descriptions, and fostering audience interaction. By prioritizing these key elements, you'll not only enhance the overall podcast experience but also attract more listeners and ultimately achieve the success your podcast deserves. Happy podcasting!

111 Invest Wisely: The Link Between Podcasting Expenses and Delivering Value - Prince Harry and Meghan's Spotify Split02 Jul 202300:25:44

On this episode I talk about spending some serious podcasting money. The Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Spotify split. For a mere $20 million dollars they agreed to create amazing podcast content that would deliver a "different perspective" from the Royal Family. And when we all found out they were faking interviews and had no real content, its no wonder that Spotify dropped them.

In the ever-evolving world of podcasting, where new shows are constantly emerging and competing for listeners' attention, it's easy to get caught up in the allure of big names and celebrity endorsements. However, as tempting as it may be to rely solely on a recognizable host or guest, the true key to podcast success lies in delivering high-quality content and tangible value to your audience. While a big name may initially attract some listeners, it's the substance and value within your podcast episodes that will keep them coming back for more. Here's why prioritizing good content and value is paramount:

Authenticity: Listeners crave genuine experiences and real conversations. A podcast that offers valuable insights, unique perspectives, and engaging discussions will resonate with the audience on a deeper level. People connect with content that feels authentic and relatable, rather than just a polished facade with a famous name attached.

Trust and Credibility: Establishing trust with your listeners is essential for building a loyal audience. By consistently delivering valuable content, you demonstrate expertise and credibility in your niche. When listeners trust your podcast as a reliable source of information or entertainment, they are more likely to recommend it to others and become long-term subscribers.

Longevity: Trends come and go, but good content stands the test of time. Focusing on providing value ensures that your podcast remains relevant and valuable, regardless of industry shifts or the rise and fall of individual influencers. Building a solid foundation based on quality content allows your podcast to thrive in the long run.

Community Building: A podcast is more than just a one-way communication channel. It has the power to create a community of like-minded individuals who share common interests. When your podcast consistently delivers value and meaningful content, it fosters a sense of belonging among listeners. This community engagement can lead to loyal followers, active participation, and even potential collaborations.

Differentiation: In a crowded podcast landscape, having good content and value sets you apart from the competition. While a big name may grab attention initially, it's the substance of your episodes that will distinguish your show and attract a dedicated audience. By focusing on delivering unique and valuable content, you carve out a niche and build a loyal listener base. While there's no denying the potential advantages of having a big name associated with your podcast, it's crucial not to rely solely on that factor. Instead, invest your time, effort, and resources in creating high-quality content that delivers value to your audience. By doing so, you'll build a podcast that stands the test of time, fosters genuine connections, and leaves a lasting impact on your listeners.

107 Mastering the Mic: Secrets to Becoming a Great Podcast Presenter30 May 202300:18:16

Happy Podcasting! Thanks you for listening today, I really appreciate it! In the world on the "indie-hobby" podcaster I've noticed that most of you are not broadcasters. The friendly "chatcast" type of shows are fine, but from a listener perspective they dont seem to grab anybodys attention. There is nothing to dazzle the audience. There is a way of thinking that might help when you record your next episode. Think of how you can be a better Presenter versus having a simple conversation with friends.

In the vast world of podcasting, creators have the freedom to express their ideas, interview guests, and engage in insightful conversations. While many podcasters adopt a conversational approach with their guests or co-hosts, there is merit in adopting a broadcaster mindset and focusing on the audience. In this episode, we will explore the reasons why podcasters should consider projecting their content to the audience and why it can lead to a more impactful podcasting experience.

Broadcasters have a clear purpose—to entertain, inform, or inspire their audience. They craft their content to captivate and engage a wide range of listeners. Similarly, podcasters can benefit from adopting this mindset by understanding the importance of catering to their audience's needs and interests. By thinking like a broadcaster, podcasters can create content that resonates with their target demographic and offers value to a broader audience.

When podcasters shift their focus from personal conversations to projecting their content to the audience, they increase their chances of reaching a wider audience. Broadcasting content that is relatable and valuable to a diverse range of listeners can attract new followers and expand the podcast's reach. By considering the audience's perspective and tailoring the content accordingly, podcasters can maximize their impact and grow their listener base.

200 | Podcasting Saved Me: From Love to Loss and Finding My Voice Again05 May 202500:37:54

In this special 200th episode of Podtastic Audio, I'm taking off the headphones and getting real with you.

Over the last 15 years, I've worked as a gasoline tanker truck driver—and for the past several years, I've also been behind the mic as an indie podcaster, podcast editor, and podcast coach. But this episode isn't about audio tips or gear recommendations. It's about why I podcast in the first place.

This is my most personal episode yet. I'm sharing the full story of how I went from being a long-haul listener to launching The Kris and Kristine Show with my wife, how that podcast helped build a relationship—and how the end of both the show and the marriage left me rebuilding everything from scratch.

Through heartbreak, divorce, and the chaos of starting over, podcasting became more than just a creative outlet—it became my lifeline. I talk openly about navigating the collapse of a relationship, the decline of our podcast, and what it's like to lose your co-host and your best friend all at once.

But I didn't stop. I kept creating.

In this episode, I also introduce my new podcast project, Everyone's a Bot, a short-form social media comedy podcast that helps me laugh through the absurdity of online life.

Whether you're new to podcasting, deep into your own indie podcast journey, or just need to hear a real story about resilience and rediscovery, this one's for you.

🎧 In this episode, I talk about:

  • Why I started podcasting in the first place
  • How The Kris and Kristine Show came to life (and how it ended)
  • The reality of podcasting with your partner
  • How Podtastic Audio was born to help other podcasters improve
  • The emotional toll of divorce and rebuilding my life
  • Launching Everyone's a Bot—a new creative outlet for fun and healing
  • Why podcasting still means everything to me

Thanks for listening, and thank you for helping me reach 200 episodes. If this episode resonates with you, please subscribe, leave a review, or reach out. I'd love to hear your story. 👉 Visit PodtasticAudio.com to connect or ask podcasting questions.

106 Finding the Balance: Examining the Relationship between Podcast Content Creators and Commenters23 May 202300:21:04

Understanding the Differences between Content Creators and Content Commentators

In the realm of online content, there are two key roles that shape the landscape: content creators and content commentators. While both contribute to the digital discourse, they fulfill distinct functions. This episode explores the fundamental differences between content creators and content commentators, shedding light on their unique roles and perspectives.

Content Creators: Content creators are the driving force behind the creation and dissemination of online content. They possess the skills, expertise, and creativity required to generate original material across various platforms. From podcast hosts to YouTube vloggers, bloggers, and social media influencers, content creators bring ideas to life. They invest time and effort into researching, crafting, and producing engaging content that captures the attention of their target audience. Content creators often take on multiple roles, serving as writers, producers, editors, and marketers of their work. Their primary objective is to entertain, educate, inspire, or inform their audience through their unique perspective and creative expression.

Content Commentators: Content commentators, on the other hand, play a complementary role to content creators. They engage with the material produced by content creators, offering their insights, opinions, and reactions. Content commentators can be considered active participants in the digital conversation. They provide valuable feedback, initiate discussions, and contribute to the overall discourse surrounding the content. Commentators leverage platforms such as comment sections, forums, social media, and even dedicated podcasts to share their thoughts. Their perspective adds depth to the conversation, enabling further analysis and interpretation of the content's meaning. Commentators often draw from their personal experiences, knowledge, or expertise, enriching the overall dialogue surrounding the content.

Differences: The key differences between content creators and content commentators lie in their roles, responsibilities, and levels of engagement. Content creators are the originators, responsible for generating original material, while content commentators respond to and interact with the content. Creators invest time and resources into content production, often assuming multiple roles. In contrast, commentators focus on consuming and analyzing the content, offering their perspectives without the burden of content creation. Creators are often driven by their passion for a particular subject, while commentators engage based on their interest, personal connection, or expertise in the topic at hand. Additionally, creators typically seek to build a loyal audience and establish their brand, whereas commentators may engage with various creators and content.

Content creators and content commentators both play vital roles in the digital landscape. Creators bring their ideas to life, crafting original content, while commentators contribute valuable insights and perspectives to the ongoing conversation. By recognizing and understanding these differences, we can appreciate the collaborative nature of online content and foster a more inclusive and engaging digital environment.

105 Unveiling the Podcast Interviewer's Dilemma: Narrative vs. Conversational Style Showdown15 May 202300:19:10

Welcome to Podtastic Audio! On this episode I'm going to talk about the two different styles of podcast interviews: The Narrative Stye and The Natural Conversation Style. And no matter which style works best for you and your show, remember to have fun!

Podcasting has emerged as a popular medium for interviews, offering a unique and engaging way to share knowledge, stories, and insights. When it comes to podcast interview shows, two distinct styles have gained prominence: the natural conversation style and the narration style. While both have their merits, they bring different dynamics to the listening experience.

Natural Conversation Style: The natural conversation style aims to simulate an organic and spontaneous discussion between the host and the guest. It prioritizes authenticity, a relaxed atmosphere, and a free-flowing exchange of ideas. Here are the pros and cons of this style:

Pros:

  1. Authenticity: Natural conversation style allows for genuine reactions, emotions, and unscripted moments, making the interview feel more personal and relatable.
  2. Engaging and Dynamic: The conversational approach creates a sense of energy and back-and-forth banter, keeping the listener engaged and entertained.
  3. Flexibility: This style permits diversions and tangents, enabling unexpected insights and new perspectives to emerge during the conversation.

Cons

  1. Lack of Structure: The absence of a rigid script can sometimes lead to meandering discussions or incomplete coverage of certain topics.
  2. Lengthy Episodes: Natural conversation-style interviews tend to be longer due to their open-ended nature, potentially testing the patience of time-constrained listeners.
  3. Potential for Information Overload: Without a tightly organized structure, essential points may get buried or lost within the conversation, making it challenging for listeners to extract key takeaways.

Narration Style: The narration style takes a more structured and controlled approach, with the host providing narration, context, and guiding the interviewee through a pre-determined script. Here are the pros and cons of this style:

Pros:

  1. Clarity and Focus: The narration style ensures a clear direction, allowing the host to cover specific points and ensure the interview remains on track.
  2. Conciseness: The structured format allows for concise delivery of information, making episodes more time-efficient for busy listeners.
  3. Enhanced Storytelling: By incorporating well-crafted narratives and transitions, the narration style can create a compelling and immersive storytelling experience.

Cons

  1. Reduced Spontaneity: The more controlled nature of the narration style may limit the natural flow of conversation, potentially sacrificing spontaneity and authenticity.
  2. Less Flexibility: The rigid structure may leave little room for unexpected insights or unplanned detours, potentially missing out on valuable perspectives.
  3. Potential for Sterility: Overly scripted episodes can sometimes lack the warmth and personal connection that comes from a genuine, unfiltered conversation.

Conclusion: Both the natural conversation style and the narration style bring unique qualities to podcast interview shows. The choice between the two depends on the goals, preferences, and desired audience experience. The natural conversation style thrives on authenticity and engagement, while the narration style offers structure and concise delivery. To strike a balance, some hosts combine elements of both styles, blending the strengths of each to create a captivating and informative listening experience. Ultimately, regardless of the chosen style, the success of a podcast interview show lies in the ability to provide valuable insights, foster meaningful conversations, and resonate with the audience.

104 Capturing Crisp Audio: Tips and Tricks for High-Quality Podcast Recordings08 May 202300:24:54

Happy Podcasting! On this episode of Podtastic Audio, I'll help you capture really good audio for you podcast. When you record audio, you need to know... how well the audio is actually being captured at your microphone source. There is an easy way to find out how good your audio is coming into your microphone. And to my surprise, 46% of podcasters didn't do this! https://podtasticaudio.com/

LIve Audio Monitoring

As a podcaster, monitoring your own audio live during recording is crucial for ensuring that your content is of high quality. By listening to your own voice and the sound levels of your recording equipment in real-time, you can detect any potential issues such as background noise, microphone pops, or low audio levels. Monitoring your audio can also help you to adjust your speaking volume and tone to make sure that your listeners can hear and understand you clearly. By taking the time to monitor your audio during recording, you can make sure that your final podcast product is polished, professional, and enjoyable for your audience.

Audio LUFS

Audio LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale) is a measurement used to determine the loudness of an audio signal. It measures the perceived loudness of audio content, taking into account human hearing and the frequency response of the human ear. LUFS is different from traditional measures of loudness, such as decibels (dB), which only measure the peak level of the signal. LUFS measures the overall loudness of the audio content, including both the peaks and the quieter parts. This measurement is particularly important for podcasts because it ensures that the audio is consistent in volume and doesn't cause discomfort or fatigue to the listener. Many podcast platforms have specific LUFS standards for audio submissions, so it's important for podcasters to be aware of and meet these standards for optimal sound quality

103 Mixing and Mastering: Enhancing Your Podcast with Original Music Beds30 Apr 202300:21:28

Music Beds for your Podcast. Today I'll play samples of music beds that I created and I'll tell you how to make your own for free. So what is a podcast music bed and do you need one?

A podcast music bed is a continuous piece of music that plays softly in the background while the host or guest speaks. It adds depth and ambiance to the podcast, creating a more engaging and immersive experience for the listener.

To use a podcast music bed, it's important to first consider the tone and mood you want to convey in your episode. The music should match the theme and content of your podcast, and complement the tone of your voice. It should also be played at a low volume, so as not to distract from the main content of the episode.

When selecting a music bed, you can either choose a pre-made track or create an original piece. There are many royalty-free music libraries online that offer a wide range of genres and styles. Alternatively, you can hire a composer or musician to create a custom track that fits your specific needs.

It's important to note that the music bed should not overpower the main content of your podcast. It should simply enhance the listening experience and add a layer of professionalism to your production.

Overall, a podcast music bed can be a powerful tool in elevating the quality of your podcast. By selecting the right music and using it effectively, you can create a memorable and engaging listening experience for your audience.

Ep. 99: Local vs. Remote Guests: Is Recording Quality Worth the Distance?04 Apr 202300:20:28

This is Episode 99! Wow I've almost made it to officially creating 100 amazing podcast episodes about helping you create an amazing podcast of your own. Today we are going to have a little fun. This entire episode was recorded live in one take. To illustrate the similarities to podcast guesting remotely to locally. I have two different clips from two different podcast interviews that we did on The Kris and Kristine Show. You have to decide which of them was recorded locally, and which was done remotely with Cleanfeed

There are several differences and benefits to having podcast guests remotely or in person. Here are some of them:

Remote guests:

Convenience: One of the biggest advantages of having remote guests is that it's much easier to schedule interviews with people who may live in different time zones or have busy schedules. You can conduct interviews from anywhere in the world, without having to worry about travel time or expenses.

Diversity: With remote guests, you have access to a much larger pool of potential guests, which can lead to a more diverse range of perspectives and experiences on your podcast.

Technology: With the right tools and equipment, remote interviews can sound just as good as in-person interviews. You can use platforms like Zoom, Skype, or Zencastr to record high-quality audio and video, which can be edited and polished in post-production.

In-person guests:

Connection: When you're interviewing someone face-to-face, there's a level of personal connection that can be difficult to replicate remotely. You can read body language, make eye contact, and build rapport in a way that's not always possible over a screen.

Energy: In-person interviews often have a higher energy level than remote interviews, which can make for a more engaging and dynamic conversation.

Atmosphere: When you're recording in-person, you have control over the recording environment, which can help ensure good audio quality and reduce distractions.

Ultimately, whether you choose to have podcast guests remotely or in person depends on your specific needs and goals. Remote interviews can be convenient and offer a wider range of guests, while in-person interviews can provide a deeper connection and more dynamic energy.

Ep. 96: Why We Podcast: Exploring the Motivations, Benefits, and Challenges of Creating Audio Content12 Mar 202300:20:45

In today's episode, we're going to explore the importance of serving your audience with value and The reasons why you should start your own podcast. As podcasters, our primary goal should be to provide value to our audience. When we create content that our listeners find valuable, we're more likely to build a loyal following and establish ourselves as trusted experts in our field. So, how do we serve our audience with value? Let's take a closer look. First, it's important to understand your audience's needs and interests. By getting to know your listeners, you can create content that resonates with them and provides solutions to their problems. Second, you should strive to make your content both informative and entertaining. While your podcast may be focused on a particular niche or topic, that doesn't mean it has to be dry or boring. By infusing your personality and humor into your content, you can make it more engaging and enjoyable for your audience. Third, you should aim to provide actionable takeaways that your audience can apply to their lives or businesses. Whether it's tips and tricks for improving their skills or strategies for growing their businesses, giving your listeners practical advice that they can put into action is a great way to provide value.

Now, let's talk about the reasons why you should start your own podcast. First and foremost, podcasting allows you to connect with your audience in a more personal way. By creating audio content that your listeners can consume on-the-go, you can build a deeper relationship with them and establish yourself as a trusted authority in your niche. Second, podcasting can help you reach a wider audience and attract new customers or clients. By promoting your podcast on social media and other channels, you can expand your reach and attract new followers who are interested in your content. Finally, podcasting can be a great way to generate additional income. Through sponsorships, advertising, and other monetization strategies, you can turn your podcast into a profitable venture and earn money doing what you love.

In conclusion, serving your audience with value should be the top priority for any podcaster. By creating content that resonates with your listeners and provides practical solutions to their problems, you can build a loyal following and establish yourself as a trusted expert in your field. And if you haven't started your own podcast yet, now is the perfect time to get started and reap the many benefits that podcasting has to offer.

Ep. 93: The Sound of Success: How to Ensure High-Quality Audio from Your Podcast Guests19 Feb 202300:20:52

Welcome to Podtastic Audio! Today we'll be talking about an important aspect of podcasting - guest audio quality.

So, what exactly is an audio double-ender? Put simply, it's a technique that involves recording each participant in a podcast episode separately. This means that the host and the guest each record their own audio track using their own recording equipment. Once the recording is complete, the separate tracks are then synced together to create a final product with high-quality audio. Why is guest audio quality so important to your audience? Well, when someone tunes in to your podcast, they want to be able to hear everything that's being said clearly. Poor audio quality can be distracting and make it difficult for your listeners to follow along with the conversation. In fact, studies have shown that poor audio quality is one of the top reasons why listeners will stop listening to a podcast. Additionally, guest audio quality can impact the overall professionalism of your podcast. If your guests are hard to hear or sound like they're recording from a tin can, it can make your podcast seem less polished and less credible. But, by using an audio double-ender, you can improve the guest audio quality in your podcast. This technique ensures that each person's audio is recorded in the best possible way, which can result in a much better listening experience for your audience. First and foremost, it's important to communicate the importance of high-quality audio to your guests. Let them know that you'll be using an audio double-ender and explain what that means for them. You may even want to provide them with some basic equipment recommendations or tips for recording their audio. Another important aspect of using an audio double-ender is syncing the separate audio tracks together. There are a number of software programs that can help with this, but it's important to test out the process before recording an entire episode. You don't want to find out after the fact that there was an issue with syncing the audio!

If your guest doesnt have a decent sounding microphone, just buy them on of these, and let them keep it. It's selling on Amazon as of now for only $15 USD.

Ep. 92: Navigating Growth Disappointment in Podcasting and Finding Hope for the Future08 Feb 202300:22:11

In this episode, we'll be discussing one of the biggest challenges podcasters face: gaining growth and building a loyal audience. Despite the growing popularity of podcasting, many shows still struggle to gain traction and build their listenership. So, what are some of the reasons why some podcasts fail to grow?

One of the most common reasons is poor production quality. Poor audio quality, inconsistent sound levels, and inadequate editing can all turn off listeners and make it difficult to build a following. The same can be said for poor content. If your show lacks interesting topics, engaging guests, or a clear value proposition, it can be difficult to keep listeners engaged and attract new fans.

Another factor that can impact growth is poor marketing and promotion. If you're not actively promoting your show and reaching out to potential listeners, it can be difficult to build an audience. This is especially true for new podcasts that are trying to establish themselves in a crowded and competitive market.

A lack of consistency is also a big issue for many podcasts. If you're not releasing new episodes regularly or if there are long gaps between shows, it can be difficult to build a dedicated following. Listeners want to know that they can count on you to deliver new content on a regular basis, so it's important to establish a schedule and stick to it.

Finally, many podcasts fail to grow because they don't engage with their audience. Whether it's through social media, email, or other channels, it's important to build a relationship with your listeners and to listen to their feedback. This not only helps you improve your show, but it also helps you build a loyal and engaged audience.

In conclusion, building a successful podcast takes hard work and dedication, but by focusing on production quality, marketing, consistency, and audience engagement, you can build a loyal following and achieve growth over time.

Ep. 87: Happy Holidays - How do you define Podcast Success?22 Dec 202200:20:37

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays as this episode comes out. This Christmas I wish you and your family a wonderful Holiday Season. As the year comes to a close, we tend to look back on the year we've just had.  When it comes to "podcasting" itself, how successful has your show been over the last year? What is your own definition of success? Most of us say, "Having FUN" is the reason you podcast. Its probably the main reason that I podcast. If your not having any fun, then it doesn't really matter what comes next. And just because you spend a lot of money on gear for your show, doesn't equal a successful show. If you are looking to get a dollar return on your investment. Maybe your show just isn't as good as another one, maybe your not as famous, or maybe its just not as good. Dont get discouraged when you create your podcast. It can be temping to look at other shows stats with jealousy.

Today I share the Twitter Pole results and to my suprise on what was picked as the least voted. Podcast Awesome and have FUN!

Ep. 85: Podcasting through the Holiday Season - Our Media Host went DOWN!09 Dec 202200:20:26

Happy December 2022! The Holiday Season is here upon us. As we gear up for the Christmas Season a lot of Podcasts will be taking time off for the Holidays. That is totally okay to take breaks from podcasting. But consider that people do enjoy listening to podcasts all year long. They might be forced to take a break from their favorite shows because they decided to take time off this time of year. Which opens up the chance they might discover you podcast. So if possible dont stop podcasting this time of year. Make your show a Holiday Theme like we are doing on The Kris and Kristine Show. All December long we are making Christmas Themed Content.

On The Kris and Kristine Show this week, our Podcast Media Host went down. They had server problems and our show wouldn't play anywhere. Which can put a lot of stress when you are trying to promote your podcast.  So what do you do when that happens? You should double check that you are connected to the internet. Try different devices and see if it plays. If still not working, then Google check if the company is having an outage. You could file a complaint or wait and see if it comes back up like I did. Luckily it was only down for a few hours. But if it was longer... I would consider switching media hosts.

Ep. 84: Good Audio from a remote guest on a Blue Yeti with Descript Studio Sound.30 Nov 202200:19:41

Hey Podcasters! I hope all is well with your podcasting journey. Today I share how I was able to  get really good audio from a guest that was using a Blue Yeti microphone for the first time. I used a few tricks up my sleeve. First I record all my guests via Cleanfeed. Second I will run the recorded .wav files through The Levelator app on my Macbook. Then the final step I used was Descript's Studio Sound feature. Which can work like magic to enhance "bad" audio.
