These awesome sounds are right on the show today! We will be listening to his first single "Neanderthals" that has a punchy pop-punk cut, followed by "You Are There," an acoustic rock ballad inspired by the Psalms.

Quotes:

03:31

"I'm honored to think that it's at a high standard. Sometimes I wish it could be even better than that, but I'm always trying to challenge myself."

20:46

"...when I had the opportunity to play music, I just realized this is what I'm supposed to do. This is what God has given me as a gift, and he's calling me to use it for His glory."

40:29

"Maybe it's almost eight years ago now officially, but when I was writing this, it was just a means of a reminder. I think I was looking to find the answers and the situation where I was just a little sad and confused and I looked and I found it. Well, of course I mean, everyone knows Psalm 23. But looking into Psalm 139 where it says you've searched me, Lord, you know me, you know when I sit, when I rise and you understand everything about me, and if I ascend into the highest heavens, you're there, for making my bed in the depths of Sheol, you're there. That whole idea I just thought, "I want to put this in the song."

50:37

"For me, I would love to share the songs on the road and network with other artists that have made it big. If I could get myself to the top, I mean, I will. But all in God's timing and if it's in his will. The thing I have to understand is that I can't rush the process, you have to enjoy the experience."

52:44

"I guess for other worship leaders that are out there listening to this, who may be looking for a place in between where you want to honor God with your music, but you don't know if that's just in the church. Know that the church is a place that God has put you for a time, and he will put you there, but there is also a world that we have yet to reach. I would say, don't be afraid to take risks, don't be afraid to try something new and different, and be willing to be told you're wrong."

55:57

"I think I love that you're encouraging other people and innovating or working with other innovators and helping others have a platform to share what God has put on their heart."

319. DANiiVORY, Nashville Singer-Songwriter, Touring with Beyonce', and around the world!24 Sep 202100:41:51

We've got another killer singer-songwriter to welcome to the dHarmic Evolution. Hailing from Wexford, Pennsylvania, she's an independent R&B soul-pop artist, who has an absolutely stunning career going on in the music industry. Strap up your seatbelts as we go to Nashville to meet DANiiVORY.

Dani always had music in her life. Her mom was a music teacher, a liturgical minister and encouraged her to pursue her passion for music. She went on to obtain a higher education at the esteemed and famous Berklee College of Music, graduated with a dual degree in contemporary writing and production and vocal performance.

Dani has done it all! She's toured with Beyonce, small theaters, and big theaters. She is currently living in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband and daughter, where she continues to write and record music with influences that range from Janet Jackson to The Beatles.

Dani has crafted a dreamy electronic pop sound that is all her own. Let's listen together to this amazing singer-songwriter as we feature some of her great songs like "Blackout" and "Pink Lightning." We'll also get to know more about her, her experiences and also some future plans. Check out this episode of dHarmic Evolution with DANiiVORY!

More about DANiiVORY

Support DANiiVORY and her music. Follow her on Instagram and check on her website and Facebook page to see what her upcoming schedules are. All links are provided below!

Quotes:

05:23

"..trying to balance having an infant child and still trying to pursue music and figure out okay, "Well, what sessions can I do? What can I not do? Is this gonna be worth my time?" That's what gets hard. So that's when it's like, if you have family close, definitely tap into that resource."

17:44

"...I would lay down, like just a basic piano track and come up with ideas. Sometimes I'd be on the bus. I would come up with the lyrical idea, I'd record voice memos on my phone. Any songwriter probably has like millions of voicemail recordings"

25:12

"It was really more about the personal growth I was able to have as a performer and a young upcoming singer-songwriter, and seeing what it takes to be successful in that area of entertainment."

36:47

"Don't stop, Keep it up. Keep going. Work on your craft. You just got to show up on the page and even if you don't feel like it, and it's a hard day, just push through it. You don't have to feel inspired every day but from there you can find the inspiration I feel like so it's just so important that you show up. Don't give up. Because just like anything else, an author they're not going to always come up with like their award-winning story every time they go to write something but you know they sit down every day and they show up at the page and they write, so it's in the monotony I guess on some of those days that you can find magic, I think."

317. Kiana Corley's Amazing Style of Music, Soul Pop Meets Folk Alt Rock, and Great Songwriting!27 Aug 202100:46:07

Let's head out to Lancaster Pennsylvania today, where soul and pop is not on everyone's playlist. But, we've got a truly original artist who treats her lyrical composition and vocal delivery with the same respect as an artist taking their brush strokes to a fresh virgin canvas. This makes perfect sense as her influences include Corinne Bailey Rae, Tori Kelly, and Stevie Wonder. We're never put in a genre-exclusive category, so why should her music be?  She is soulful, with a youthful overlay of pop but also intertwined with her love of folk music and alt-rock.  We're going to hang out with none other than Kiana Corley!

Kiana is a multi-instrumentalist. She started at the early age of 12. She alluded to the fact that, if you play different instruments, it gives you a different perspective on songs, songwriting, and production.

In Kiana's most recent album, the songs follow a storyline of a young romance, which started on shaky ground with two people pretending it was solid. She's extremely motivated by helping and inspiring others through her authentically original music. Her music video premiered on Celeb Secrets this year, and she also signed a distribution deal with Heart Songs Records.

Get to know more of her, and get to listen to a solid, wonderful style, and an eclectic mix of all of the best stuff ever heard on this episode of the dHarmic Evolution with Kiana Corley.

More about Kiana Corley

Kiana is mostly on her Instagram, but all the links on how you can find here are provided below. Check out and support Kiana and her amazing music.

Quotes:

08:45

" I just feel like if you make music that good, it's always gonna just resurface in some way, just for the years to go on. Like, I think they definitely deserve to be forever growing. "

17:22

"I'm really blessed to be able to have that ability to share things in my life with people. Especially because I'm definitely not a person that talks about myself in a regular sense. I'm not going to tell you my whole life when we first meet, but I will share that with you if you listen to things that I wrote. That's kind of my way of teaching people about myself."

38:03

"I try to just take care of my body as much as I can. Because I think that if you don't do some sort of movement, or some sort of meditation, or journaling, or anything like that, it can catch up to you. Your mental well-being and your physical well-being are definitely connected I believe, and they're both equally as important."

41:00

"Just really pursue the honest opportunities and be honest with yourself about what you want as an artist and what you can bring. Be confident too, because everybody brings something different and all of it is needed. There's a space for all of it. There's a place for literally every artist, I really truly believe that, as well. So, keep going."

316. Crystal Mcgrath, A Multi-Passionate Woman, Inspires All Through Music and Coaching13 Aug 202100:50:59

Crystal Mcgrath, A Multi-Passionate Woman, Inspires All Through Music and Coaching

We are going all the way up to Calgary, Canada today as we meet with a musician, activist, podcast host and inspirational influencer. She is a multi-passionate entrepreneur, inspiring individuals to live to their highest potential. Let's welcome to the show, Crystal McGrath!

Crystal's latest single "About a Boy" was released last June 2021. She blends a pop drum beat with a traditional country backing band to create a sound that is all her own. It tells the story of a confident girl who still longs for the connection from a relationship and finds herself distracted with the memories of her past. Her style blends two different musical flavors into something that any music fan would enjoy!

Crystal does not only do music, she's also an advocate for women's empowerment, and wants women to feel that they can go after any goal that they hope to achieve. To promote this message, she founded "Live with Love,'' an online platform with the mission of helping women live their best life through movement and mindset. She also has a podcast, "Crushing Chaos," and she can also be seen regularly hosting her video podcast, "The Artists Behind The Music."

Crystal lives by the words of poet John Greenleaf Whittier's poem "Don't Quit" to which she also shares with us in this episode. Her personal mission statement is to inspire individuals to live their best life and she does it through many different ways. We are about to learn more about this here on the dHarmic Evolution with Crystal Mcgrath.

Quotes:

07:18

"It was nice to have something positive to focus on during this crazy time, just constantly pivoting and being creative with how we can still do music in a way that we're affecting people but not leaving this space."

12:12

"It's okay not to be okay and just acknowledging that those days will happen and just taking care of yourself through those moments allow you to really succeed and shine on the days where you're feeling good."

25:55

"My personal mission statement is to inspire individuals to live their best life. And I really try to do that through my music, through my coaching, through my fitness company, through my podcasting, through conversation, and connection, and through social media."

34:35

"It's just so important to be healthy and fill your body with healthy things…"

36:50

"I love combining music coaching with movement coaching and meditation coaching. I love combining all of them for clients just to have a really well rounded experience on how I can show up as my best so I can perform my best?"

39:50

"It's been a long journey of really being okay, with this is who I am and it doesn't matter what other people are doing. It doesn't matter what other people are saying, or thinking, or feeling. Let them be them, and let me be me. Really giving myself permission to step into my powers has really been a big thing for me the past few years."

Quotes:

15:28

"My music journey now means so much more to me because I really do feel so inspired to do it…"

20:20

"I guess my musical expression was like picking on my guitar in my dorm room at nights and helping lead some worship at church. So, it was still there. I'm singing all the time in the shower, and all around, and having fun with that, because you never stop being a musician."

31:33

"The song was made, it was really inspired by, just this whole new season of emotions and feelings and situations that I was going through and found myself in. It was just a very simple, simple, concept, a simple expression of where I felt I was like, "Yep, I'm flipped upside down.""

44:16

"Don't be afraid of passionately pursuing what's on your heart. That's a huge thing. There's definitely a lot of fear and anxiety, because of the risk that whatever that means to follow what purpose you feel called to pursue, what passion you have to develop, but you're never wrong pursuing the passions that God's put on your heart."

46:35

"The enjoyment of pursuing any dream is the process of getting there. So, I think the more you really, really, love growth, love practicing, the more you're going to enjoy the journey."

314. Katie Knipp is Comin' at 'Ya, Singing the Blues, She'll Be Your "Chamomile and Cocaine,"16 Jul 202100:53:23

We're going all the way out to California today as we hang out with a woman with the rarest of gifts –her own voice. This Northern California Blues Americana siren is equipped with powerful pipes and an outstanding ability on numerous instruments from piano, to slide guitar, to harmonica. Whether she is performing solo or accompanied by her full band, she unfailingly captures the audience's hearts from the first note. Get to hear this amazing and talented singer-songwriter from California, Katie Knipp!

Katie has opened for Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, Joan Osborne, The Doobie Brothers, Tim Reynolds, Jon Cleary, Ruthie Foster, Joe Louis Walker, The James Hunter Six, William Duvall of Alice in Chains, among many others.  She played the 2019 Mammoth Blues Festival as the only solo female act that included headliners Buddy Guy, Trombone Shorty, Charlie Musselwhite, and more.

She has won two SAMMIES-2020 and 2019 (Sacramento Music Awards) for Best Blues Artist and was nominated Artist of The Year by The Sacramento News and Review.  She has been honored Female Artist of the Year 2020 by the Country Folk Americana Blues Music Realm.  She has gained worldwide radio support, putting both "The Well " and "Take it With You" on the Roots Music Report in Top Contemporary Blues Albums spun for 2018-2021.

We will get to know her stories, and hear some of her great music from her album "The Well" like, "Chamomile and Cocaine" and "The Gospel of Good Intentions" on this episode of the dHarmic Evolution with Katie Knipp!

More about Katie Knipp

Listen and support Katie and her music. We listened to some of her tracks and she shared a lot of great stories, but there's definitely more to hear from her, so don't forget to check out all the links provided below!

Quotes:

13:13

I always, always write the song first, to the point where I can perform it as a solo act. If those things can't happen, the song isn't ready. I'm not just all about the studio stuff. The saxophone and all the great musicians that I add to it are just icing on the cake, but I feel like it's so important to make sure that the song stands on its own.

17:56

I felt very depressed. I was like, pray, and the words just came. He said, in my mind, it just came to me. He said, "Do you see how much you love it now? Do you see that music is love? Just like my love for you is never-ending. You can trust that your music is love and is never-ending and will never leave you or go away."

36:23

There have always been some stories, I've had some experiences that forced me into, "Why to write a song in the first place?" And I feel blessed by those experiences, even if they were hard at the time.

37:58

I think about that a lot of the time. Because, I'm like, "I don't care what you think. I'm old. I'm here. I'm doing this. If you don't like it, move aside, because these people do. It's totally fine."

39:03

When you think about a voice, it's like a thumbprint. First of all, it's unique to everybody. If you don't like somebody's voice, that's perfectly fine. To me, it's like wine or food. You have a specific palate for what you like to hear from somebody's mouth. I completely get that I'm not for everybody. So that's a huge thing that transformed my "balls out", way of going about singing. It's like, "Oh, I don't care anymore."

More about Rob Walch

If you find today's episode appealing to you, and you want to learn more about podcasting, you can connect with Rob Walch with all the links provided below.

Quotes:

08:25

"I thought it was going to be "BIG" early on. I mean, before Apple even supported it, I quit my day job and went podcasting full time. So that was April 2005, I left a six-figure income to do podcasting. Early on, I  thought this had potential to be really big."

09:11

"Where podcasting comes into play, and the strength is it's a distraction medium. It's something you can listen to while you're doing something else – while you're walking the dog, working out, doing yard work, driving to work, to and from, at work. It's something that you can have going as a distraction, as getting your mind off of the task at hand that's chewing up all your time. This just helps pass the day, and audio has always had that capability."

17:44

"…when I got to that point where I wasn't worried about the recording anymore, I found it easier to concentrate more on the content of what was going on in the interview, and that helped me really find my voice."

34:29

"I mean that's what we try to do. We try to help you get out everywhere because you never know where your show is going to take off."

52:05

"I think everyone should podcast. Everyone has a voice. I think the biggest impediment to getting people into podcasting is always that they don't like the way their voice sounds. I just say, "Well, remember this, Gilbert Gottfried has a podcast, and if he can have a podcast, anybody can have a podcast."

312. We may be "A Million Miles Away" but Fighting for Frequency Brings Us Together with Their Music11 Jun 202100:59:48

Music is their weapon, will you join the fight? We've got three gentlemen to visit today in New Orleans. That's three out of the five members – the guitarist, the keyboardist, and the bassist of the band. We're going to talk about guitars, songs, gigs, New Orleans, touring, and anything else that we can think of with Fighting for Frequency!

Fighting for Frequency's origin is a tale of amazing timing, one about the universe conspiring to bring musicians together in a serendipitous way. Chris and Dave had been long-time friends and had played music together in the past. Chris had given up on music years before, but when he moved into Dave's neighborhood around 2016, Chris and Dave realized they had the itch to write music again.

At nearly the same time, Adam who is Dave's childhood friend moved into the neighborhood literally in the house behind Dave's. Knowing Adam was an excellent musician and songwriter that had played in several melodic metal bands, Dave invited Adam over for a listening party that engendered mutual respect for each other's songwriting skills, leading to ideas and aspirations being shared. A gate was built in the fence to transport gear from Adam's to Dave's.

Adam also brought in a close friend as a drummer, and Fighting for Frequency was formed, with Adam utilizing his production skills to mold F4F into a more anthem-style arena rock sound partnered with high-energy shows. Within a couple of performances, the band grabbed the attention of a dedicated group of local rock fans, F4F's freaks! Soon after, Randon moved to New Orleans from Shreveport. The first live music show in New Orleans that he attended happened to be a Fighting for Frequency show. He showed up looking to network with other musicians. Getting friends with F4F and with his background in metal, Randon proved he was a phenomenal guitarist and brought a killer new approach to the band's sound. He was asked to fill in on guitar for a show while Dave was out of town. While Dave was away, he sends F4F videos of him playing their songs on piano for social media content, prompting the idea of Dave playing keys since he has played piano most of his life. With Dave expressing interest in playing keys and Randon having great chemistry with the band, it was the catalyst for the further growth of F4F.

Due to the demands of F4F's touring schedule, the previous drummer moved on, but during the recording of the second F4F album, the guys brought in-studio drummer Brody. An absolute monster drummer, they asked him to join the fight, and he has infused hard-hitting new life into the rhythm section of F4F.

Forged in the fires of rock and brought together by a series of fortuitous events, the formidable five members of Fighting for Frequency are determined to share their passion for rock with their fans, bringing rock back to its former glory. Music is their weapon. Join the fight!

More about Fighting for Frequency

Adam - Vocals/Guitar; Dave – Keys; Randon – Guitar; Brody – Drums; Chris – Bass

We hung out with Dave, Chris, and Randon today, but if you want to know more about the other members and their music, you can check out the links through their socials provided below so you can connect and listen to them.

Quotes:

03:48

"... we are sort of fighting through the media clutter. There's a lot of artists out there, and there's also just a lot of peanut butter, it's hard to get heard in the 21st century. So, we're fighting for that space, that frequency within music and just within the industry in itself. We felt that it was appropriate, both on a symbolic level and also on the literal level of as musicians, we are fighting for that space." -Chris

29:19

"We try to bring that vibe, but we're having a good time on stage. If we're having a good time, I think the fans will too. It's sort of infectious to see people playing music and doing something they're passionate about." -Chris

30:24

"I think people generally associate rock with anger, but that's not really us." – Randon

34:22

"I think specifically during the pandemic, we spent a lot of time focused on social media and trying to expand our social media presence as well, just because it was the easiest way to get the word out and get the frequency out during that time." -Dave

53:09

"Don't get frustrated, keep on plugging along and sometimes trust the process. You might be impressed where the journey takes you." -Chris

55:04

"You just got to get out there and you got to pursue it. You know, you can't sit in your room and just play riffs and hope that being talented will be enough to get you somewhere, you got to put yourself out there, you got to get uncomfortable, and you got to meet people." -Randon

311. "Paris" or Nashville: You Don't Have to Choose, Teresa Guidry is Taking Us to Both28 May 202100:56:22

We're staying in Nashville today to listen to the wonderful music of a young lady who is a singer and a songwriter. She is originally from Rock Hill, SC but she moved to Nashville and felt that she is where she is meant to be. She had some great opportunities since then. She has been writing with Grammy-nominated songwriters. She gained national exposure on Team Blake as a contestant on NBC's 'The Voice'. She also sang the national anthem for the NFL's Panthers. The latest on the list is that she had her new single and music video for 'Paris' featured on CMT. Let's get to know more about Teresa Guidry!

Teresa just recently launched her brand-new song called 'Paris'. She shares with us the people behind this and gives us a peek in the making of this song. We also have her song Red Wine, which leaves them feeling that they should listen to an old turntable. Aside from listening to hear great music, we'll get to know her influences, what her day looks like and what are her goals in the future.

Teresa had a lot to go through before making it to where she is today and will get to know some of her side hustles and stories in this episode. Don't miss out on this amazing young lady by the name of Teresa Guidry!

More about Teresa Guidry

Stick around to see what Teresa Guidry is up to. She definitely has a lot of things coming her way, so check on the links below to where you can follow and support her.

Quotes:

06:49

"As soon as I got here, I just started meeting people who made it feel like it was perfectly made for me and that I was doing the right thing… One event led to another but I didn't question it when I moved here all. It was, it just felt really right."

11:42

"It's just one of those things where you get in a room with someone talented, and they can kind of look at it from an outsider's perspective. That's the really cool thing about finding someone like that to work with is because you're just joining your minds and finding what works for both of you, and really cool things can come out of it that way."

23:33

"…everything on the outside was so scary that I had to find some sort of peace on the inside and honestly, it was a good year for me I feel it's like wrong to say but you know it kind of just gave my soul a break that it really needed."

49:52

"It's like, you just have to do it. Right now, I'm kind of in a high place my life but this hasn't always been it. So, I would say that it's definitely going to be challenging. It's going to be a journey. But if this is what you truly feel like you were meant to do, then you just have to do it. Like, don't wait for the circumstances to be right because they never will be. You just kind of have to go with the flow. If you believe in yourself, just keep going. Because, I mean, if you won't do it yourself, no one else is going to do it for you either. So, I feel bad."

Quotes:

09:54

"I think on the personal level, people should take it upon themselves to organize their lives. So, they are not put into situations where they have to make a tough decision when they're tired, and it's late in the day, and they've just had the hassles of normal life adding upon them."

27:58

"I firmly believe that everyone has their own personal currency that they have to offer the world, and should use that to reach their goals and to share that to enrich other people's lives."

29:09

"So, you're looking at all of the things I have listed on my resume, it all says the same thing  James, which is to inspire people, right? I'm not five people rolled into one. I'm just one person inspiring people in different ways."

35:15

"I've always liked or thought about, if I just had the vision, just to see how everything would come together, I can help so many other people, including myself and my students to be exactly where they need to be because I could see the entire field in amazing detail as they do."

44:07

You're not perfect, and neither are the things you want to do. But that doesn't mean you can't work within that, to just bring forth what it is you want to give to the world. So, I think everyone has something that really only they have, and that really only they can do better than anybody.

309. "Ride On" with Circle of Sanity's Vocals and Lead Guitarist Josh Sapna30 Apr 202100:58:07

We're going to the great state of Pennsylvania today! We're going to visit a band called Circle of Sanity. They have a combined array of styles. They were brought together by faith friends and a little luck. Ever since then, they've been writing new material, performing songs, and all written by individual members before they got together. Now, they've got this great gig and they're playing shows locally and regionally – they've done everything from 50 seats to a thousand seats. Leaving with an overwhelmingly positive response from the audience.

Today, we're going to chat with Josh Sapna, the band's guitarist and vocalist. Let's get to know him more, what he enjoys aside from music, his approach to songwriting, and of course listen to some of their great music from the EP: Celestial Mechanics. Listen to Break the Silence, Mortal Coil, and Ride on. Don't forget to check on other music that they have as well on your favorite platform. We've got some pretty heavy music coming up with Circle of Sanity!

More about Josh Sapna

Circle of Sanity:

Josh Sapna – guitars and vocals;

Carson Slovak – bass

Grant McFarland – drums.

Make sure to check out and support Josh Sapna and his band, Circle of Sanity. All the band's social media links are provided below.

Quotes:

03:40

We always thought we got together to jam that was where we got our sanity back and escaped from everything, and that became our circle. There you have it. It was born "the circle of sanity."

11:48

Books left open to interpretation, which I do on purpose. Yeah, so my songs, I don't want to be too definite in the meanings, because I want more people to be able to apply their own life and experience to it.

51:36

The number one thing and I have always said is this. Never. There's never been a time that I sat down to write a song and said, Will other people like this? Not once. The only question in my mind is at the end of it? Do I like it? when I buy this would I be impressed with it? and I don't know if that sounds selfish. But that's really the only way you can stay true to yourself is to not worry at all about what anyone else is going to think of it.

Quotes:

10:47

"I was very blessed to have some wonderful, wonderful bosses and leaders who've been very supportive and have also told me what I need to do and that's to continue what I do. And I tell everyone, it requires a lot of discipline, it requires you doing (not) what you maybe want to do, like hit the snooze button, but actually what you have to do to get there."

26:15

"You really have to know who you are, and be confident and not feel you have to apologize if your answer doesn't agree with the person you're speaking with. As long as you know, you feel acknowledged, and you also appreciate them and acknowledge and listen to them."

45:06

"I love being part of a team. I love being part of a group. That's one thing the military has taught me – is being able to share that responsibility. So, we all can have a chance to unplug, but also to really be in that environment of growing and developing others, as well as pushing myself."

Everywhere I go and everywhere I look, everyone's trying to do things to be more comfortable. They're looking for the more convenient. But I'm going to tell you that if you look at all these successful people that you aspire to be like, they come from a place of being uncomfortable. And when you were trying to avoid the pain or the struggle or the hard things, you are actively choosing to be average.

Quotes:

20:30

"I think we're all on a healing and a blossoming journey. We're all on a journey of learning to give and receive love… To give, and receive, and embody love."

28:14

"As I became more aware and intentional about creating an inspired life, a heart-centered life, I started making more empowering choices, as to mindset messages that I was going to surround myself with the types of people, the types of organizations that I want to be a part of. And so, little by little I started gravitating toward other heart-centered, God-inspired people. And little by little, as the light started coming in, my life started to be a reflection of my deepest truth. And I call that walking our Soul path."

36:23

"Sometimes, when we are dealing with something that's upsetting us, that we feel angry about, or we're in a negative state about, we try to fight the negativity and we try to get rid of it, which causes a lot of resistance. And I have found – and this is what the practice of yoga and spiritual practices taught me – that by inviting the light in, inviting the love in, inviting spirit in, the forgiveness, the healing starts to happen automatically."

37:17

"I can have a lot of intentions throughout the day, but my one guiding intention is to be an instrument of universal love."

41:43

"…Maybe they're not singer-songwriters, or an author or a writer, maybe they're calling us something different. I would like to share with you that that doesn't mean you're not a creator. Your life is your greatest art form. I believe our life is a creation, we create through our thoughts, words, our actions, and our choices."

306. Time to make a "Midnight Escape" with Indiana's Jazz Singer, Barbara Santora19 Mar 202100:58:46

We have a phenomenal jazz singer on today's episode of the dHarmic evolution. She became known not only for her pure voice in the exceptional five-octave range but for her ability to connect with her audiences emotionally and draw them into the music. She has played in Las Vegas for 14 years, sharing the stage alongside talents like Frank Sinatra Jr. and Billy Preston. She also was a featured entertainer for USO, lifting the spirits of our men and women in uniform for three years. From the great state of Indiana, let's welcome Barbara Santora!

Today, Barbara shares with us her great experiences in Las Vegas and the time she did USO tours. Get to know her more and of course, her music! We're featuring some of her amazing songs such as "Micky's," "Midnight Escape," and "That's Just the Way It Goes". We'll get to listen to them, know their stories and go behind the scenes.

More about Barbara Santora

John Michael O'Leary –pianist, singer, and composer. Barbara's duo called Side by Side.

Check out their Facebook page and website to keep up to date with their awesome songs and new releases. All links are provided below.

Quotes:

20:43

"I really hope James that I never reach a point in my life in my career, that I don't think I can learn something from someone. Because, I believe that if you reach that point where you feel that you cannot learn anymore, then you're really done."

27:58

"I really think that that's the whole inspiration behind the whole thing is that, push the other stuff aside, stay true to yourself, and move forward. And somewhere, someone along the way, is finally going to realize who you are and what you do."

33:25

"I go back to the fact that I don't believe that it was my talent that stopped me; from our lack of talent that stopped me from making it a long time ago. If what we call making it is what we call like, being known all over the world. But I really believe it was because I believed that you had to keep the principles. If I cannot look in the mirror and like who I am, then I'm not gonna be happy."

55:50

"It doesn't really make any difference if you've got 100 people or you've got 10,000 people. You are there to do what God gave you the gift to do and do it. Go for it. Go for it. I don't care how big your crowd is how little your crowd is. Give them all you've got because that's what God gave you."

57:23

"For all of those out there that have given up. Put your career in God's hands, and in His timing, and let Him decide when it's right for you to do it. Because you're going to go through obstacles all along your way. But if you love it, and it's what you're driven to do, put it in His hands and watch his miracles happen."

21:46

304. What's "Out of the Void" with Dream Aria's Ann Burstyn from Canada19 Feb 202100:54:41

It feels like I'm back where I belong and that is here on the dHarmic evolution hanging out with you. We've got an awesome, young Spitfire lady today on the show. We got to chat with her before and it's amazing to hear from her again. She is a singer, a lyricist, and the star performer of the band Dream Aria, Ann Burstyn!

Dream Aria is one of the best Canadian Progressive rock bands that I know. They were already great before, but there has been a lot of growth and development that you can hear in their sound. The playing and the vocals have jumped way up. As they said, their motto is "No rules, no boundaries." They don't limit themselves to evolving their sound. We've got two amazing tracks featured on the show today but there are a lot more to hear from them, so check out the links below on where you can find them.

Ann updates us on how they are doing right now in Toronto, Canada – also with her daughter, health-wise, and of course, with their music. She also shares some of her hobbies and something that can help you with de-stressing.

More about Dream Aria

Other Members:

  • Donald Stagg – Keyboardist, Composer, and sometimes lyricist
  • Garry Flint – Drummer, Producer/Engineer, Co-composer and main Composer
  • Andrew Berezowsky – Guitarist, Violinist, Vocalist

Dream Aria is virtually everywhere, but the best place to check them out is on their Facebook page. Ann and Don are both on it, checking your messages for whatever you need to reach out to them with. Also, check out their YouTube channel, they've got new videos waiting for you. All links are provided below.

Quotes:

11:33

"Every day that's a studio day is the best day. For me, it's heaven and I don't like being away from the studio, in fact. I find it difficult."

23:03

We want to be together. The real magic is actually being together.

26:58

"Being outside in nature, and doing the photography and seeing all this beauty that I really didn't know existed. I mean, I knew it was there, just not to the extent that I've now seen, has been very healing for me. And it helped take away a lot of my physical pain, emotional pain, mental stress, it's a good de-stress. "

29:29

"The fresh air alone. I mean, anyone can do this if they're feeling low, or just, you know, clutters in their head. Just go outside, just for five minutes. It's so feeling just the fresh air or there's a certain vibe."

45:13

"I think my main thing lately is seeing that people are quite depressed, isolated, lonely, and sad. And when I speak with personal friends about this, I urge them to try something new to get out of there, that feeling of isolation."

46:55

"Honestly, everyone has something in them I think that they can tap into, and then they can develop into this gift they never knew and that they can share it with others. I mean, how great would that be?"

302. Jason Damico, throws us back to the greatest "Rock & Roll"08 Jan 202101:04:46

Today we've got a really unbelievable guy, he is like a throwback to yesteryear. This young man is a tribute to the best rock music you've ever heard in your life. His music is like a rework of the whole sound of the classic rock icons of years gone by and made it even better.

Check out this gentleman! He is a musician, producer, singer-songwriter, and mixing engineer. Moreover, he is an actor for a couple of decades now. All the way up from North Carolina, Jason Damico!

A little background on Jason Damico

He grew up with great parents who have been supporting him in both music and acting. He started out as an actor when he modeled as a calendar baby at 18 months old. At 2 years old, he was holding a plastic guitar, making the couch as the amplifiers and it is for him as a vision quest and that's how everything started. He was raised music-wise with a little bit of the faith-based Christian raw community and the secular music – from the classic rock icons.

At 15, he won the battle of the bands with some friends. Recording his music fueled his creativity in producing and as a mixing engineer to create sounds. During his freshman to sophomore years, he went to jazz camps at colleges. He was in college-level theory courses as a drummer, his main instrument.

He also shared with us his injury back when he was 14 which instead of being a setback became a supernatural experience on understanding the context of soundscape both from a structural standpoint and also melodic theory.

Jason as an actor, musician, and producer at this time

Jason's honest answer when asked how he managed to balance his acting and music career is "Barely". He really got a lot on his plate. But from his standpoint, he considers acting and music as not as much different.

Due to the current situation, Jason just did house concerts, but he is mainly focusing on all the projects he is going to roll out in 2021. He also did mix a couple of records for other artists. As of the moment, he is still in the process of elimination and is waiting to unfold what is in store in the future.

More about Jason Damico

Jason got good news on what he's been working on and the best place to stay tuned is through his website, jasondamico.com. You can also catch him on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. All links are provided below.

If I can just take a second to try and encourage anybody out there who has been through any type of physical trauma. You know, there's light at the end of the tunnel and sometimes it could be your greatest asset later on. It just takes time.

32:48
You're just trying to be authentic and be present at the moment and have the best performance possible.

56:42
I would say, just stay true to yourself, and really take the time to meditate, spend time in prayer, whatever that means for you. And really settle down within yourself and just be okay with the silence.

300. Susan Hickman, Singer-songwriter you will have her songs on "Rewind"25 Dec 202001:07:49

It's Christmas and greetings of Merry Christmas to everyone!

Today, it's a pleasure to have one of the most hardworking talented young ladies. She is a great songwriter and has an incredible voice, she was also a CMA winner a couple of years back! She's done it all and continues to have an unbelievable work ethic and motivation to keep creating, performing, and playing. A female country singer-songwriter, Susan Hickman all the way from Houston, Texas!

Susan has a tremendous desire, determination, talent, and work ethic all combined. She's been just playing forever to the point where she really did some physical damage to herself from overdoing it on stage. We'll get to know the story behind this as she shared it with us today.

Get to know about Susan, her music, her sound, and her influences – and of course, we get to listen to her great songs!

Susan Hickman as a singer-songwriter

Susan loved music ever since she was a kid. She knew she was meant to do this. She started writing songs at the age of 5 or 6 years old as an entertainer to her younger sister. She grew up with parents who loved music as well. She shared with us the kind of music she listened to and what inspired her to craft her sound.

She does songwriting session's and she loves to co-write! She even did a mentoring program with a lot of young singer-songwriters. Her talent and passion are really overflowing. We'll get to listen to her great skills through the songs we have featured today and the back story of how it came to life.

Quotes

34:52

So, whenever I decided to do music as a career. I felt like, I don't want to be pigeonholed. I just want to have my own sound and if I have influences from something soulful or something more rocking or something that's even a little Poppy, that's okay.

44:02

But sometimes just little things here and there. It makes such a huge difference. And that's why I just love co-writing because sometimes you just need to get out of your own way and get out of your own headspace.

45:36:

And as far back as I can remember, music was such a huge deal for me. I mean, I just thought I was always meant to do that.

55:58

I wish I just had a rewind button to where I could rewind and figure out how I can reformat my day, more efficiently.

  • MoeDeLL
  • Jordan White
  • Kylie Odetta
  • Mikalyn Hay

Interview with MoeDell

We'll start this show with MoeDeLL -- a hardworking and talented man that holds 250-270 shows a year. He has performed for crowds of every size, from farmers' markets to bars, and corporate events.

MoeDeLL is a prolific Americana songwriter. He plays the guitar and will captivate you with his unique voice and creative lyrics. He loved music as a kid and he started to learn to play the guitar at 9 years old.

Listen to MoeDeLL's song being featured today in the show, "Hoppin' Trains".

Interview with Jordan White

Next, we have Jordan White, a young man originally from Philadelphia. He writes great pop-rock songs that really cut to the heart. He has a good voice and a great chord structure. Every time he comes up with something new I am plugging in and listening, I have become a fan...

He's been on the dHarmic evolution twice. Let's look back on the conversation where Jordan is describing some transitional period in his life which led to the recording of the track being featured today.

The song is Jordan's title track for his new EP, "High Road".

Interview with Kylie Odetta

Now, we'll have a young lady which is way wiser beyond her years, Kylie Odetta.  She is an indie/soul singer-songwriter. She creates music that is powerful and dreamy. Her raspy voice will definitely capture you.

We have one of Kylie's smash hits "Under the Sun" featured today on the show.

She shared on the show before a cool discussion about songwriting, vocals, voice changing, surgery, and mostly sounds. She also mentioned one of her favorite shows that created a cozy welcoming experience where people get to be a part of the music and it's not just her who performs on stage.

298. Lillie King, Theatre, NYC, and Now for The Singer/Songwriter Career all at 17!11 Dec 202000:58:33

We have an awesome young artist in the show today! She is just 17 years old but she already created a unique vintage Americana sound that crosses the boundaries of many different styles. With the help of influences based in the 70s, rock rhythm and blues, and modern poeticism.

Singer, songwriter, and actress from a small town in West Virginia, Lillie King!

Check out her brand-new debut self-titled EP, and fall in love with the sound that will remind you of the good old great songwriting that happened in the late 60s and early 70s. Lillie King shared that it was what she loved listening to while she was growing up.

Lillie King's Music career and her Theater Life

Lillie King started out as a theater actress at around six years old. Her parents are not into music, but her grandparents are the ones who pushed her to take the classes. She eventually stopped but at the age of 12, she missed performing on stage and went back to the theater where she was filled with four years of great experiences since then. She is a trained soprano operatic singer; she went to the New York Film Academy for this when she was around 14 or 15 years old.

She just started writing songs at 16 years old. She won Talent West Virginia where she got herself an EP deal and had to write her own song. That's where "Cheated Love" was born. One thing to watch out for, as well, is her song "Home by Ten" which is what she described as an autobiography of her life. Also, check out her metaphorical song titled "Roses", which relates to her life in the theater. "Red" is another track that you can relate to, whether it's a family relationship, a friend relationship, or, a personal relationship.

Currently, Lillie King made the executive decision to stop singing in the theater realm for a while. She struggled to switch the two voices that she is using – her soprano voice and her studio voice. She wanted to focus on her music career right now. She hopes that one day she can go back to the theater without having to worry about switching her voices.

More about Lillie King

Good news! Lillie King loves to connect with people, the best place to do it will be on her Instagram. If you want to know more about her, check out her website. All the links will be provided below.

Quotes:

4:47

I'm not trying to write what's in right now. I'm trying to write what I love to listen to.

22:02

When you love what you're working on, you want to work on it. You don't want to stop, and you have fun while you're doing it. That's just the best part of the process.

25:17

I love nature. I love being outside. So, it's just finding those little moments that I can take to rest. Then so I can get really excited to come back and work on the stuff that's important.

52:25

I know a lot of people in my life who are stressing out about their futures and what may or may not happen, and I just want to let everyone know that it's better not to stress.  It's better to let God's hand take over because something good will come from it. You just have to wait and work hard.

297. Dani Felt making an impact through her music04 Dec 202001:01:15

Pop-singer, songwriter, and an artist coach! Dani Felt will join us today for an exciting view on her music solo career and her business in the music industry.

Dani Felt is originally born in Philadelphia. She has adapted her music life to the Music City. She exceeded the expectations of many when she switched from being a singer-songwriter to the pop genre. She spins tales of twisted love dark secrets and haunted stories. The dark pop sound of her music complements her powerful and seductive voice.

She released her debut pop single "Queen" this year 2020. She made a bold statement and a hardcore vibe through her latest track. She wanted to make sure that her music is impacting people in some way.  Which is definitely something we can feel with her tracks.

Dani Felt's musical background

Dani Felt started to enjoy performing when she was a little kid. She started with Nursery rhymes at the age of two and would perform in front of her parents. At 10, she started doing voice lessons. She did musicals and theaters during her middle and high school years, as well.

In middle school, she started doing poetry. She combined her love for writing words and music and put them into songwriting. She also entered several musical camps when she was a kid. She liked being in studios writing, recording, and performing at a really young age.

Her parents are not musically inclined, although they have a huge passion for music. Her grandmother can sing but did not really pursue a career in it. Her dad's second cousin is a song-writer and wrote the song The Greatest Love of All. Overall, she is surrounded by a creative vibe.

Dani Felt's early career in the music industry

It was in college when Dani Felt learned that she loves leadership, project management, and finding the right people. A year later, she interned at a music PR company in London wherein she got fired. She wanted to prove that she can do her own thing. And so, she started a music blog without any connections and started from there.

She moved to New York and realized that she is really good at connecting people together.  She gets to showcase artists and got to connect people in the industry -- filmmakers, painters, artists, musicians, business people where she would put up events together. Eventually, she had to stop since it was a lot of work for not a lot of money.

Her business in the music world

Dani Felt believed that artists should not just focus on one platform. She said that the main point is to understand who their fans are, where they are, what your brand is, and what you're selling. She believes that there are many ways to monetize the artist's skill, they just have to get creative, create, and plan. She likes to teach people to put themselves first and value themselves and their gifts.

She gets frustrated most when people need her help, but don't want to change or do the work. Although this year, she is learning to let people have control of their own lives and make decisions. Without any pressure, she just wants them to come to her when they want to work with her. That's when she realized that when she focuses on what her working on, it attracts more clients because seeing what she does makes them want to be part of it.

She also believes that mindset portrays the biggest part. She stated that if you don't believe that it's possible, it will not be possible. She is also a fan of learning and she shares them with her clients, from the emotional aspect to money management.

16:33

That was a really cool moment because I realized so many things that artists can make an impact with their music, that anyone can do anything even if they've never had any experience.

34:27

If I had to choose, I would choose music, but I would have to make sure that the music I'm making is impacting people in some way.

Really value your time because it is the only thing we have. Everything. Like that's the only thing that we have.

53:59

I would just say, never give up. Like, never give up on your dreams. Do what you love. Take action. Just take it one step at a time.

296. VICU A Special Talent Taking Us All "Back To The Future Love"27 Nov 202001:12:15

Our guest today is a young man who has made a name for himself in the music industry. He is a self-taught producer, audio engineer, musician, singer and songwriter. "Complementary", his first EP was released May of this year and people are raving about it. Let's welcome all the way from Maryland, Vicu!

His songs "BTTFL" (Back to the Future Love), "Blame it on Me", and "Something About Her" to name a few showcase Vicu's unique sound, fantastic guitar techniques and skills that perfectly combined with his modern edge songwriting and creative phrasing. Moreover, his songs have brought love, hope, and inspiration to a lot of people.

Being one of the top promising producers, Vicu has worked with some of the amazing artists in the industry. Most recently, he has worked with Matt Viers, his production partner, on none other than Rihanna's upcoming album.

As a musical producer and an artist

Vicu's passion is to bring out the best in people. Consequently, he finds it joyful to help artists along the way. As a matter of fact, Vicu has developed a lot of artists, groups, and even rappers especially in his state, Maryland. Not only does he have a pursuit to produce and develop artists, but also Vicu wanted to be an artist himself. Through cultivating his fellows, it really helped him get sharp with production and songwriting. He is also a self-taught artist and very hands-on. Growing up he would sit and watch Youtube to learn how to play songs on a guitar. Over the years he has also developed his one-of-a-kind writing skill, and the lyrics of his songs captivate the hearts of many.

Balancing producing, artistry, and life

Having a lot on his plate right now, running his production company with his friend Matt Viers, working with other artists, and at the same time being an artist himself, Vicu still manages to balance everything that is happening in his life. On the other side of the spectrum, in these difficult times when people in general lost a lot this year, whether it be happiness, rough situations, or even people. Vicu was one of those people; he actually lost four of his loved ones this year. He even opened up about a detail in his personal life - that he is adopted from Romania. Knowing that information, Vicu's outlook is to take full advantage of his life and just make the most of it. Despite all these, he remains positive and grateful with all the blessings and opportunities that are being showered upon him.

Just being somebody that could bring things out of people, I really love doing that a lot with this music stuff.

The discovery of learning to do new things, you know, being able to do something you couldn't do yesterday as an artist is a joy like no other.

8:35

Music makes itself once that becomes available to you. And once you become available to yourself, and that just takes time. It takes growth…it takes going through things, uncomfortable things…growing up is uncomfortable for everybody.

295. Erin Coburn, Blues, Ambition, and a Burning Passion for Guitar!20 Nov 202001:04:13

Today we've got something special - a young lady who is just a badass in rock and roll with an intense passion for audio engineering, guitars, and blues music. Wow! This girl is one of a kind!

Our guest for today is just 19 years old, yet her talent is so palpable. Let's welcome on the show, musician, vocalist, and lyricist, Erin Coburn!

How did Erin get into music?

With all kinds of different music coming from each area of their house, Erin was indeed surrounded by music even at a young age. Her parents and brother are also listening to music 24/7. But what really sparked the interest in Erin was her dad's guitar which she tried to play and claimed it her own when she was just 2 years old.

As far as blues goes, her third guitar teacher introduced her to that music genre during their first lesson. It was when her teacher started playing around and doing solo that made her intrigued about blues. It is such a raw form of music. And what attracted Erin the most is that with blues, it's just whatever you feel; it's a straight expression.

Inside stories about her songs

The first song played on the show today is entitled "Everybody" which streamed from moments when life gets overwhelming, from everyone trying to get attention, and trying to do a million things at once.

The next song is called "It's Over" was played with a Fender Stratocaster that her grandpa helped her get when she was younger. It was one of her favorite guitars.

And her song, "Misfit" is her newest single. It came from the Rudolph Christmas Special where they sing "why am I such a misfit". This song is a message to everyone that it is okay not to fit in; it is cool to be unique.

Thoughts about streaming services

For Erin, streaming services is wonderful from the consumer's point of view. On the other hand, as an artist, the idea is also great. Through streaming services like Spotify, artists can connect with fans at the push of a button. However, the tables have definitely turned. There is not a big enough value on what musicians are doing today. She believes that listeners/consumers need to put a value on the artists on social media.

294. Asiah Million, Celebrating "Dreams, Love, and Music"13 Nov 202000:56:41

Welcome to episode #294 of dHarmic Evolution

I am so excited about today's show because we are graced by the presence of a very versatile artist. She is a vocal coach, singer-songwriter, and also an author. Not to mention her notable collaborations with famous artists like Sean Diddy and Mary J. Blige to name a few. Let's give it up for Asiah Million!

Born and raised in Queens, New York, Asiah is one of seven siblings. Growing up, she is surrounded by music all across the board. Hence, she is greatly influenced by her family from sharing interests with her siblings, admiration of her mother's strength, to motherhood with her wonderful children, Taiwan, and Ocean.

New Book: "Dreams, Love, and Music Lifestyle Revised"

Together with her new book, Asiah has written tracks to go along with the chapter titles. This will soon be released as an album, so watch out for it!

Moreover, Asiah has fascinatingly tied her music to the stories in her book. This was born out of the desire to be true to herself and do something that really makes sense. Owing to the fact that Asiah knew she can better express herself through music, and that is her truth. She wanted to tell a story but wanted to do it musically so that it could be authentic.

Let's get to know about the stories and adventures that came along with writing and making her singles:

Firstly, "DLM" was done at her home last June. She felt alone and was a little depressed at this time because of the pandemic. Consequently, this has been her inspiration to write this song to give a good vibe to everyone because there was just so much going on. Her son has helped her with the arrangement and recording of the song; the track is done by the great musician, Arden Altino.

Secondly, in the book, Asiah talked about what gives her the drive, and that's how she found her purpose. As a result, she was able to write the song "Driven". Music is so powerful to Asiah's life that it can make her forget about the negativities in life. That is why she started doing the songs for each chapter of the book. She wanted to inspire people to get up, get out, and do what they've got to do.

Lastly, "Her Story" is chapter one in the book. This was about a young lady telling her story to Asiah. It was about how the girl got out of one relationship that held her back. Then she met a guy who totally supported what she was doing.

Quotes

4:43 I want to tell a story, but I want to do it musically so that it can be authentic.

12:00 You know what, for those who feel like they're going through something alone, you can actually play music and be okay.

25:00 I wanted it to inspire people that really get up, get out and do what you got to do.

25:48 … celebrate your life, whatever your life is. And I think that's why God tells us don't compare yourself to anyone.

25:25 This song is for the women to really like, understand how powerful you are. Even if you're going to be at home wife, be that great. Turn on your music and do the dishes and wash clothes and just be happy. Whatever you decide to do, just do it well.

31:47 So paying attention always served me better than trying to get attention.

293. Spotlight Series No 2, Featuring Stand Out Artists & Future dHarmic Stars!06 Nov 202000:34:29

Welcome to episode #292 of dHarmic Evolution

Today's show is very special. I will be featuring four of the best interviews I have done on the dHarmic Evolution. The links to the full interviews will be shown below.

Let's indulge in the stories and music of these singer-songwriters, vocalists, and musicians who are certainly extra special in what they do.

So, who do we have today? We have:

Luna Keller
Marc Jordan
Alyssa Marie Coon
Savannah Morris

Interview with Luna Keller

Our first ever Spanish artist. Luna Keller is all the way from the Canary Islands. I was very honored to have her on the show six months ago. With so much experience, talent, and passion at such a tender age, Luna Keller's unique blend of songwriting, teamwork production, and instrument playing will dazzle any music fan out of their seats!

Luna's song featured on the show today is "Alice is in love with a Mad Hatter"

You can listen to Luna's full interview here:

https://dharmicevolution.com/old-blog/de259-luna-keller-singing-and-songwriting-on-the-canary-islands-simply-paradise/

Interview with Marc Jordan

Next is a true music legend, brilliant songwriter, music inspiration, and a talented artist from Canada, Marc Jordan. Additionally, he is the writer of Rod Stewart's famous song "Rhythm of my Heart" and has written many other hits for major artists.

Jordan has already been the recipient of several music awards including the ASCAP, JUNO, and the Smooth awards. Despite having already accomplished so much in the industry, the drive and passion that Jordan has for music and songwriting, according to him, is deeper and more profound than it's ever been.

Marc's song featured on this episode is a romantic smooth jazz rendition of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now"

You can listen to Marc's full interview here:

https://dharmicevolution.com/old-blog/de258-marc-jordan-celebrates-both-sides-of-music-smooth-jazz-cant-get-any-smoother/

Interview with Alyssa Marie Coon

Now let's go down to Florida as we listen to Alyssa Marie Coon's music. I think she was 15 or 16 when she guested on the show. Her vocals are simply incredible, listening to her, you could easily forget that she's just a teenager. Not only does this young woman have undoubtedly a great and special voice, but she is also a gifted songwriter who plays piano, guitar, and ukulele.

Listen to Alyssa's featured song on this episode "Country Girl"

You can listen to Alyssa's full interview here:

https://dharmicevolution.com/old-blog/de257-alyssa-marie-coon-age-is-oblivious-to-talent-and-determination/

Savannah Morris

Last but not least is Savannah Morris from Nashville, Tennessee. As one of the 8 Nashville Natives, Savannah feels blessed both career-wise and socially by networking and linking with a lot of the Native locals in the music and entertainment industry, all of whom have supported and helped her evolve and get better with her music.

Moreover, I want to ask everyone to pray for Savannah. She has recently recovered from COVID-19. On the other hand, she has recently been diagnosed with Leukemia and is now being treated.

Savannah comes from royalty. Her whole family is rooted in music. If my memory serves me right, her father still plays for Loretta Lynn and her mom has done vocals for Elvis Presley, and many other huge stars.

Listen to Savannah's featured song on the show "Kudzu" (a wildflower that grows in Tennessee)

292. World Maestro, Colin O'Donohoe, Conductor of the Pangean Orchestra30 Oct 202001:09:44

Welcome to episode #292 of dHarmic Evolution

It is with pleasure for me to introduce the only symphony conductor we have ever had on the Dharmic Evolution. Drummer, composer, and "World Maestro", let's welcome for the third time on the show, Colin Donohoe!

The last twelve months have been both awesome and crazy for Colin. He and his wife, Ceren, wanted to be away and be in the woods to concentrate on the projects they are working on. Hence, they are currently in the beautiful state of Oregon. Unfortunately, there was a major fire in Oregon recently. Colin expressed his gratefulness and admiration to the dedicated team of firefighters. In dire circumstances, the team was able to drive the residents away from the fire while they were driving into the fire. And because of these efforts, they were able to come back safely home.

Pivotal moments in Mongolia

About a year ago, Colin embarked on a tour to Japan, South Korea, and Mongolia. This was a part of the project he was working on for his orchestra, "The Pangean Orchestra" wherein he interviews at least one musician from every country. He delved into the approaches, technical aspects of the instruments, and just learning their music in general.

One of the most pivotal moments for him was in Mongolia where he was able to see a lot of concerts, jam with bands backstage, and what it is like to be a musician in Mongolia. He jammed with the musicians using his Kanjira which is an Indian drum (a very small frame drum, but it gives the characteristics of a drum set). Although they needed a translator from Mongolian or other languages to English, these musicians are totally eloquent. They blended pretty well and music has been their language.

The Prayer Garden

This project was born in Mongolia. Colin and Ceren went there to unplug from the world, get away from news and social media. Moreover, they went to the Gobi Desert, where there was no WiFi, literally nothing except endless sky and white foxes. Consequently, they were forced to live in the moment and just have a spiritual and peaceful time.

Then at one of the concerts in Mongolia, they heard a woman announcer mispronouncing some English words. It sounded like "Prayer Garden", but she actually said player something. As a result, the epiphany came to Colin, and realized that it is a good concept. However, his father died in February. Then they came back to Arizona to be with his mother, unfortunately, COVID-19 broke out.

Due to the pandemic where everyone cannot go out and Colin had to take care of his mother, Colin, also needed an escape from everything that was going on. And so together with Ceren, they created The Prayer Garden. Wanting to be in a good space and just getting away from the anxiety, and apprehension during the pandemic, and also the recent loss of his father, Colin was able to write these incredible tracks. It initially started as a live stream, then he continued working out on the music and created a cinematic soundscape that would go underneath it. Because The Prayer Garden is supposed to bring the listener deeper into a meditational or relaxed state, he wanted to play something that was a bit of a flourish and a bit virtuosic, but also musical; it has to be melodic. He always makes sure the spirit of the piece is paramount, and that his playing should only be supporting the piece which is to bring people into peace and calm.

Check out The Prayer Garden from the links below; this was just released on 10/16/2020. He also released an EP called The Sunset Serenity Mixes.

Quotes

24:20
It's funny you wrote the track. But as you're recording and practicing to it, you let the track speak to you. And you start to learn the track, and it's weird because you created it. You should know what the track wants, but now the track is its own entity. It's it is own thing. It has its own characteristics. And you listen back at it, you say, oh! I should be playing this here. Oh, that's what you want. And you get a relationship going with the music you just wrote.

28:27
Wherever you travel to, you bring a little piece of that back with you.

29:10
Just be alive and let your imagination take you where you want it to go. And if things work, you know, somehow get into your mind while you're listening. That's fine. You know, let it go in there and then let it pass out like a wave and then just be alive in the moment of the music.

29:30
One thing a lot of composers and performers forget is that one of the best things they can do with their music and with their instrument is just not played. Because silence is a note.

29:49
It's called embrace the silences because that's what makes music so beautiful is the spaces

42:59
We're not trees. We don't have these roots that stick us in the ground. We're human, and humans have moved throughout the history of our species, we move.

43:31
If there's someplace you've always wanted to go to, then start making it a dream of "I've always wanted to see Australia or Ireland" or wherever, and make a plan to go there. Set yourself a plan and a course on how to get there.

45:33
If you're just so passionate about what you're doing, then it's just fun to get up every day.

58:09
But I would encourage all of us for all of our sakes, to take some time out every day, close your phones, close your computers, meditate, go for a walk with the trees. And take some time to get to know yourself. Because it's so easy with the things on our phone to just forget who we are.

291. Sarah Christine, Shows Us How We Are All "In it Together"23 Oct 202001:12:41

We're heading out west today. All the way from Colorado, let's take a ride on the musical journey with the sole theme of "In It Together" with singer-songwriter Sarah Christine!

With eclectic inspirations from pop, indie, folk, to even electronic sounds, Sarah Christine's music is undeniably rare. She enjoys the technicality behind EDM and finds interest in learning how to put that together and produces some of that music on her own.

Sarah Christine's journey unravels the cathartic episodes she has experienced and overcome in life. She once faced a near-death accident when she got hit by an F-150 truck. Consequently, her experiences in life, even when she was still juggling her corporate job and music career to going full time in music and everything in between ended up pointing her to what she is here for.

Moreover, these have been the inspirations to the lyrics of her songs. "Like the Movies" was about her getting married at a young age; everything seemed awesome, then things started breaking apart. One day, she woke up literally with nothing.

On a lighter note, when she just moved from Minneapolis to Colorado. Her neighbor was throwing a rager and blasting some John Mayer songs on a vinyl player at about 2 a.m. She got up and knocked on the neighbor's door. Instead of asking him to lower the volume, she asked him to turn the music up. She got hooked with the music. As a result, she was inspired to write "Summer Nights"

Thoughts about streaming services, dealing with the pandemic

Sarah Christine is adapting to the emerging streaming services by learning the nitty-gritty like the QR code with Spotify, setting up playlists, understanding how everything interconnects with the algorithm, and how that to connects with other platforms. She believes that these platforms are invaluable to her. Hence, she focuses on how can she use the platforms to get as many people as possible and try to connect with them through her songs. And from there, she tries to figure out how to build relationships with those people.

Like with any other businesses, Sarah Christine's career is also affected by the pandemic. 52 shows that she has set up herself have now been canceled. Right now, Sarah Christine is working on private shows and doing custom songs on the side. Above all, the value is the relationship she builds with and the lessons she learns from the people she writes the songs for.

Quotes

The mistakes are sometimes the best part of the music.

I replaced all the anger and hatred with love and forgiveness. And once I did that, it was like, oh man! The world is off my shoulders.

You have certain things that happen, where they end up pointing you into what is your purpose, what are you here for.

I think I think we have to just try to enjoy the journey a little bit more on the way I mean, it can be frustrating, but I think if we get a few little victories along the way, it's okay to stop and just, you know, celebrate that, you know

The universe tends to provide I think, what you're doing what you love

Stay strong out there on your worst days. It will get better, just keep pushing forward.

290. Megan Nadin, Debut Album "This Was Then" One of Her Beautiful Things16 Oct 202001:05:07

It's always a joy for me to see when someone is blessed with musical talent and then decides to share her blessings with others. I am very delighted to be joined today by a musician with a good heart - Megan Nadin!

Today we will have a glimpse of Megan's life, music, and her debut album "This Was Then". All the way from Thunder Bay, Canada, Megan moved to the music city last January. This emerging artist has a very unique and original sound, with her voice being her main instrument, it is a surprise to many that she only started her music career in 2017. Her mission is to change lives by being an honest and authentic voice to those in need and providing hope through altruistic platforms. This is very palpable to Megan's life because she was a teacher before she pursued her career and passion for music.

Wanting her music to be so real, she masterfully uses lyrics and melody that help paint the picture of the story, Megan is lucky enough to work with some really great creatives in the industry. Producer/songwriter Johnny Black has helped her create a demo. From there, she has built it up with the producer, Keith Thomas, who has worked with incredible people like Whitney Houston and Amy Grant. With this wonderful team, the production is stellar. The brilliance of how it was crafted around the subtleties of Megan's voice is very evident.

Weight loss journey

Megan is not only an inspiration in her music career but also her weight loss journey. She has lost 61 pounds! Knowing family and friends with medical conditions, and wanting to be around for a really long-time inspired Megan to make sure that she has a healthy body and mind. She apprenticed to be a chef for two years and started making her meals from scratch. It did not happen in an instant.

It also helped that Megan is surrounded by strong and empowering women helping her not to view her weight as a struggle. As an artist, she wants us to stand up for who we are as people. That it's all about a good mindset and how people treat themselves.

Inspirations behind her songs

Beautiful Things was written when her friend gifted her the Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac. Megan and her friend were talking about the success and everything good that came from the album, but the band was suffering as a group. Unexpectedly, the lyrics came out from her mouth: "it's crazy that some of the most beautiful things come together when things are falling apart, like the sweetest song written by a broken heart". While the album inspired the main lyric, the actual verses are built upon a series of journal entries written down by Megan.

Heart of a Lion was Megan's first opportunity to work with the producer, Keith Thomas. It was her first writing session with Keith, and he just started playing the piano and Megan began singing into the air. Voila! Lyrics and melodies are coming out, and the song was created within that day. This has set the precedence of their future projects together. In fact, he ended up being the executive producer of this new album.

The song was influenced by the notes that Keith was playing. It painted a picture in Megan's head where she envisioned a person that had it all together but deep down, this person is falling apart.

The Joker was literally from the movie "Joker". The movie unmasked and unveiled a lot of the things people deal with in society. She was so moved and inspired that she was able to write the song in one night. She painted the life of this beautiful person who had been jaded and treated unfairly.

Quotes

I'm hopeful some of the most beautiful things come together when they fall apart, like the sweetest song written by a broken heart.

"Because at the end of the day, we all get old. And we know our looks can only take us so far. It's about who we are on the inside. It's about how we treat people, and it's about how we treat ourselves."

"I think naturally, you'll be more attractive no matter what weight you are, no matter how you look, or how people will perceive you there will be like an inner beauty that shines out that makes you beautiful, no matter what the physical appearance is."

"You are enough. You have a purpose; our purpose is always changing and growing and evolving, but just go with the flow and step into the fear."

"Fear comes up when you are on to something good; fear comes up when you are on the verge of something really good."

289. Into the life of Cory Singer, On music and being in the higher end of the spectrum09 Oct 202000:57:57

Let's welcome for the second time on the Dharmic Evolution, full-fledged singer/songwriter, musician, and theatre performer, Cory Singer!

What's new with Cory?

Cory hopped on the bandwagon and started his own TikTok account with music and funny content. People started noticing him when he uploaded a video talking about autism, specifically Asperger's disorder or high functioning autism. With the unexpected turn of events, he got many views, likes, and even questions from parents with kids who are also on The Spectrum. Cory then started putting out more content talking about what it's like being on the higher end of the spectrum, his interests, and also the things that bother him.

His videos inspired a lot of people making them realize that they are not alone anymore and that there are others who are going through the same situation. Cory shared that this was also true to him back when he was in high school. Luckily, he has a best friend, who also has Asperger's disorder - he has been with him even when they were students and now considers him as his brother. He highly believes that kids on the spectrum should have a safe space to talk and relate with people for them to be assured that they are not alone. Aside from his inspirational videos, Cory also uploads funny skits to make people laugh and brighten their day.

As a theatrical performer

We can recall on Cory's past guest appearance in our podcast where his mom shared that certain people are trying to convince him to change his style of voice, but Cory stuck to his guns and grew comfortably to his own skin. He believes that in this superficial society where everybody is trying to fit in, he still chooses to be remembered by sticking out and being different. His voice is basically his brand; this led him to great opportunities especially with being part of theatre shows.

Becoming a theatrical performer has always been a dream of Cory's. He loved watching movies and seeing productions. He got his first break when he was in grade school, and landed all the lead roles during high school. He also joined the American reality competition on Bravo called "The Kandi Factory" which sparked his interest in songwriting.

As a songwriter

For Cory, the best songs happen when he's inspired, specifically in the evenings when he is finished working his two jobs, and he can be "in the moment" to write good songs.

In addition to being a singer, songwriter, and theatre actor, Cory is also a fulltime warehouse worker and part-timer at a local deli. He does not want to be stagnant and keeps himself busy particularly during these times when theatres and other venues for artists are shut down due to the pandemic.

Journey to becoming fit and healthy

Staying in shape is very important for singers. Cory used to be overweight, weighing in at 220 lbs! But was motivated by a songwriter in Nashville to change his lifestyle and start his journey to becoming fit. He lost 70 lbs and has maintained his weight by watching what he eats and working out.

Stories behind some of his songs

"Everybody Sing" – This song was written in thirty (30) minutes. It is about personal freedom and everything that is happening in the world at the moment when Cory wrote this song.

"Blind in Love" – This was produced by Wes Edmunds (Wyclef Jean's producer)

"Goodbye Felicia" – This song is the closest to Cory's personality. It came from the term "bye Felicia". Cory heard this from his mom when she was dealing with a specific person and she kept saying that term, so he decided to write a song about it.

"Girl"- This is stemmed from his mom encouraging him to write a romantic song because he usually writes dark and depressing songs. It is somewhat inspired by Radiohead.

Quotes

I think the fact that you have that kind of bravery and transparency helps a lot of people who struggle with exactly what you struggle with.

Kids on the spectrum should have a safe space so they can talk to people, relate to them, and know they're not alone.

That's how everybody should be. I feel like especially now these days, we live in such a superficial kind of society, where everybody's trying to fit in. But that's how you get forgotten. By sticking out and just doing you, that's how you're likely to be remembered.

Some people have that in mind that work is a dirty word, a four (4) letter word they say you know, but work is such a blessing. And I was talking to some people about this recently a working physical is one of the best gifts you could ever have.

Focus on your abilities, not your disabilities.

288. The Iveys, Family And Music, Born To Be Creative!02 Oct 202001:02:21

With 10 years and counting of making music together, let's get to know more about the humble beginnings, struggles, and successes of the wild sibling group – The Ivey's!

I am joined by 4 out of 5 members of the band, unfortunately, Hugo (lead guitarist and banjo player) can't make it today. But I am delighted to be graced by the presence of Jessica, Jenna, Galen, and Arlen here on the show.

With seven kids in the family and five of them in the group, their other sibling Julia, used to be part of the band as well, and their oldest brother Shannon is into farming, it is very evident that the family loves music so much. Their interest in music started with their dad who they always hear singing while they are growing up. Their dad also exposed them to trying different vocal harmony lines; eventually, they individually learned to play musical instruments - Jessica with piano, Arlen on guitar, Galen took drum lessons, and so from there, everything evolved into the music that they have today.

To keep the creative flow going, the siblings put a lot of time and effort into discussing, planning everything out meticulously, and establishing the goals ahead of time, even scheduling the days when they have to go to the studio for recording. Luckily, they've got a studio a couple of miles away from where they live, and they consider this their second home. It is called Sonic Ranch Studios located in Tornillo, Texas. Over the years, they have gotten to know a lot of different musicians and artists who they've got the opportunities to do a collaboration with. One of them is Jerry Ordonez, a fantastic music engineer who co-produced their last two projects, Leslie Johnson played the bass for some of the recordings, Michael Ways recorded cello with them and many other musicians.

Democracy of siblings in a band
As with all relationships, disagreements cannot be avoided, especially with The Ivey's because not only are their siblings but bandmates as well. Their mindset is really to try to be always focused on their goals and continue moving forward, always trying to remember that it's not one person against the other. It's more about having different ideas and coming together for the best possible option. They will always be a family and have each other.

Get to know more about the members of The Ivey's:

Galen
Galen is the drummer of the band; he graduated just last December with a film major. "Running Wild" is one of the first music videos he directed with his siblings. He is now in charge of the music video direction and post-production.

Jenna
Jenna is 23 years old, graduated just last semester with a degree in theatre arts. She was helping the band to write songs even before she joined. She usually collaborates with Arlen when conceptualizing and writing songs, and works with Galen when filming their music videos.

Jessica
Arlen tagged Jessica along when he needed a pianist and a singer. At first, they were just doing cover songs together, then Arlen started bringing in original music, and the rest is history. When Jenna and Galen joined the band, and the group recorded "Colors of Honey", layers upon layers, getting down the piano, guitar, vocals, and hearing it all together, was when Jessica had this epiphany that these have brought The Ivey's sound to where it needed to be and completed it.

Arlen
He is the second among the seven Ivey siblings. He is the guitarist, "road manager", and one of the songwriters of the band. Jenna and Arlen have written songs together; they sometimes write songs out of dreams, sometimes they work together and lead each other to a path, and it fits well. Something magical can happen with songwriters that are connected to each other and constantly working together. Arlen is not only the "spokesperson" of the group but he is also in charge of the bookings and schedules of their shows and tours.

Thoughts about their parents
Their dad is a firm believer in the power of art. Their parents have been so encouraging now, and as they were growing up. They are so proud of what The Ivey's have accomplished, and they are no doubt their biggest fans.

Quotes
"I would say what we try to do, is, we try because at the end of the day, you have to focus on the fact that you're both trying to get to a goal, and you both want to do what is best for the band."

"We're always going to have each other. So that also makes it easier because this is a passion project. And we're all working together for the good of it and trying to convey something and capture a bit of magic with that, so with that focus, it helps because you always get back to that and disagreements have to be resolved, because you want to continue moving forward, and you love each other. You want it to be a positive environment."

"It's important to be educated about music in general. But the sky's the limit with creativity and how you can apply your own creative juices to the subject constantly and keep learning new ways to do it all the time."

287. Fingerstyle Guitar Extraordinaire Tim Farrell Shares His Music!25 Sep 202001:03:21

Welcome to episode #287 of dHarmic Evolution

Join me as we take a ride today from Nashville to Pennsylvania with the musician, recording and performing artist, composer, educator, and finger-style guitar connoisseur, Tim Farrell.

Growing up jamming with friends and playing rock music, Tim eventually studied classical guitar, shifting from jazz. His eyes and ears were opened to everything that one can do, not only by playing the rhythm and lead but also melodies, bass line, and open strings, the list is endless! He then applied everything he learned from classical to steel-string guitar and combined the techniques and tones available to steel-string. Realizing that this was not just about playing a chord, but telling a story which Tim believes was one of the best compliments he received when he became the first-ever instrumentalist to play at a venue in Florida and someone quoted to him that "your story is in the music".

Tim's music has shades of Michael Hedges; it's like there is practically no limit to what he can do with his imagination on the way he approaches even the tuning of the guitar. Tim, for the most time, has been using standard tuning when he came across alternate tuning with Little Martha by Leo Kottke. He figured out that he was using open E tuning and heard the potentials that open E created and intensely explored it, in fact, he keeps a guitar on hand with that definitive tuning.

Coping with the pandemic
With the current situation, Tim believes that the biggest change was not being able to play and perform his music to a larger crowd. While keeping himself active doing walks, yoga, and taking care of his crops, Tim is streaming concerts every other Sunday. He also has a scheduled online concert and workshop at the Cooperage in Pennsylvania. His concerts with his trio called StringSongs - playing alongside Michael Manring and Christopher Garcia are also currently canceled.

StringSongs
StringSongs was formed when Tim first met Michael on a gig and did some recording together. Eventually, they decided to make it formal, and initially joined by the Grammy-winning piano player and producer, Pat Robinson but later replaced by Christopher due to conflicts in schedule. Tim together with Michael and his fretless bass, and Christopher using a very exotic percussion - they all blend, just perfectly fit, and their music is very unique.

What's next for Tim?
Watch out for the new solo album that he is working on. And StringSongs – with Michael and Christopher where they are now planning for the recording and rehearsals even during this time of pandemic to come up with new projects

Streaming and Music Industry
In this confusing time where CDs are going away, vinyl making a comeback, where consumers love streaming and artists hate it. Tim, who is also an educator, is continuously sharing his music and develops workshops online and onsite, performs at senior centers and performing art centers. He believes that this is an eye-opener for people to see that there are so many unexpected things that can be done with an acoustic guitar aside from strumming chords or playing solo.

To know more about Tim Farrell's music and everything that he does, you can support him by playing his music through streaming services, ordering his CDs through his website, supporting him on his online live concerts.

Quotes
In some ways, you get to be like the complete composer when you do what you do. Because It is an entire orchestra, it's not just by playing a chord…and it just brings out so much in the story of what's being played

And they said to me afterward, you don't need the words, your story is in the music.

A lot of people expect that you will either be strumming chords or playing a solo, and they don't realize you can do these other things together. It's phenomenal to see it open people's eyes and ears up.

I think the more your style of playing is out there, the better that songwriters will continue to develop songs in general. We will get better music because it incorporates so much imagination and so much beauty into the songs.

286. Shifting the conversation on mental health with Mary Albertoli18 Sep 202000:40:05

Mary Albertoli is a former clinical social worker who is on a mission to execute actionable solutions to help individuals struggling with mental health problems. She has a Degree in Social Work from Columbia University and has practiced for 12 years, specializing in counseling children, adolescents, and young adults suffering from mental illness.

Even though she left the counseling profession, Mary kept up with the news and statistics in the industry. With shocking numbers of a 56% jump in suicide rates, coupled with school shootings and drug overdoses, Mary knew that something had to be done in order to help the youth population from continuing on the path of self-destruction.

Having worked with both individuals and group session clients between the age of 10-24, Mary knows first hand from experience that individuals in this age group don't tend to open up a lot.

A lot of youth go through mental problems, but because this isn't a popular topic in society, they end up feeling either disgraced or ashamed of these new feelings, and instead of talking things out, they instead act out.

Social media in current times has only acted to catalyze the rate at which young adults experience loneliness, depression, and social anxiety.

A lot of teenagers using social media end up experiencing 'splintered identity' A phenomenon in which teenagers report feeling very good and inspired about one post and feeling the total opposite in the next post.

This has made them disconnect from their true and authentic self, further isolating themselves, and going through more suffering.

Handling depression when growing up.

Growing up back in the day, it was very unpopular for guardians to help you through tough mental problems. A lot of these issues were merely swept under the carpet - as you're told to 'power through the pain'

This has proven to expose unhealed wounds of the past that need to be catered to. The pain that you powered through is the reason for your current suffering. And it can only be solved by having open and genuine conversations about your feelings surrounding the traumatic experience, and how it has affected you.

Mary was able to handle the mental pain and depression that she suffered as a child in her adult life.

Having faced the demons in her closet, Mary was inspired to help others accomplish the same. And this is the inspiration behind 'The Shift' - A platform where individuals can connect with counselors, peers, and other individuals, to share issues they're going through without the fear of feeling judged or condemned.

Mary now hopes that the platform can evolve to be a diverse tool with resources that help all demographics in working through their mental problems.

In conclusion, remember to always live in the present moment, because nothing is more important than life itself. Be loving, kindful, and generous to your neighbor, especially in these fraudulent times, because we're all going through something, and the only way out, is by supporting each other.

Text hello to the crisis hotline 741741 and a counselor will discreetly attend to you.

Quotes

"It's easy to think that you're alone in life when you're isolated, this coupled with the pandemic facto is why so many people are going through depression right now. And when humans suffer, they only isolate more." - Mary on the quiet loop of depression

"A lot of young adults are embarrassed by their mental issues because this isn't something they're accustomed to. The shift is about changing the conversation so that these individuals can know that they're not alone, and what they're going through is normal."

"The important thing to remember is that nothing is permanent, things change, and they're still changing on a daily basis. Something better will eventually come - How to cope with the current pandemic"

"I love being in service to other people because it helps me discover myself even more. The mental path that I've journeyed through life is successful because I can openly share what I'm going through without feeling alone." - Mary on why she loves volunteering"

285. September 11th 2001, where were you on that day? (#285)11 Sep 202000:25:16

Welcome to episode #285 of dHarmic Evolution

Chances are that you know of someone who was in some way affected by the 9/11 terror attacks launched by Al Qaeda in 2001.

Where were you on that day? I for one, remember in complete detail all the events for that day.

I was at a seminar in a hotel conference hall that was filled to the brim with people.

I'm not very sure what the person in charge was teaching about, but I clearly remember someone walking in and began doing a play by play of what was happening in downtown Manhattan.

It all felt so surreal. With 2,977 dead, 25,000 injured, September 11th, 2001 was undoubtedly a horrible nightmare for almost all Americans and our allies and friends throughout the world.

Remembering the survivors.
We have details of the first responders and witnesses over what happened on that day. We, however, don't have as many details from the families on how the experience was for them.

What has been able to help us understand these scenes from the victims' perspective are the phone calls that were made between the people trapped in the building and their families.

Technology still hadn't evolved as much as it has today, and phones played a very crucial role in how the events of that day played out.

For example, The united airlines' flight 93 which was also hijacked by Al Qaeda terrorists, and was initially intended to blast into the Capitol building crashed into a field in Pennsylvania when the passengers and crew tried to regain control of it after getting phone calls from their family members over what had just occurred in New York.

The value of family
Looking back at the whole incident, and also through the phone calls that were made on that day. One can't help but appreciate the value of family.

Unfortunately, so many of us take our families for granted, up until it's too late, and we no longer have the time or resources to be with them.

Be grateful for the family you have. So many people out there would give anything to be with their loved ones who have been taken away from them. If you're one of the lucky few who still has a family by your side, then be with them before it's too late for you too.

The Tribute in Light
The two columns which are lit up every year on September 11 from the ground upwards (replicating the structure of the Twin Towers that were destroyed) won't be projected this year.

Commonly known as the tribute in light, the event has been canceled this year, following concerns brought by the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead of the projections, the National September 11 museum is planning to host an alternative event that will involve buildings across the city illuminating their structures with blue lights.

Labor Day With 2020 Vision, A Pandemic Lesson (#284)04 Sep 202000:41:28

Welcome to episode #284 of dHarmic Evolution

Labor day is celebrated on the first Monday of September and we all have the U.S Labor movement to thank for it.

This years' Labor day celebration falls on September 7th for both the US and Canada.

However, most countries celebrate Labor Day on the 1st of May.

The history of labor day.

There are two versions explaining how Labor day began.

Version A

The first version is set in September 1882 by the Knights of Labor, who were at the time, one of the most important labor organizations in America.

This organization held a public parade on September 5th every year to honor workers.

With time, the Central Labor Union secretary Mathew Maguire proposed that the holiday be held on the 1st Monday of September to honor the epic public demonstrations held annually.

Version B

In the second version, labor day was proposed to the Central Labor Union by Peter McGuire, the Vice President of The American Federation of Labor in 1882.

He suggested it be held on the 1st Monday of September stating that the date is perfect because the weather is great during that time, and also, this falls between the July 4th celebrations and Thanksgiving.

The Haymarket Affair.

In May 1886, a time in which most American workers toiled for up to 20 hours a day, thousands of the laborers protested countrywide in different cities to demand an 8-hour workday.

The protesters were attacked by the police in Chicago, which resulted in tons of injuries and the death of six protesters.

Another peaceful protest was planned and the Chicago police once again showed up to man-handle the demonstraters.

An unidentified person exploded a bomb that killed an officer, causing the police to open fire. This resulted in a quagmire which led to the death of a dozen workers and police officers.

Labor day vs May day.

Communists and socialists across the globe decided to go with May 1st as the day to mark the Haymarket affair.

A conference was held in 1904 to make the 8-hour day the standard worldwide. This is what came to be known as Labor Day or International worker's day.

Effects of the pandemic

The pandemic had different impacts on individuals. While some people are happy about the opportunity to design a new lifestyle for themselves, others are stressing over the new normal, and can barely keep up with reality.

A lot of individuals have developed counterintuitive habits in order to replace their usual habits. And this has proven to be very stressful.

I think what's important is that we take time to communicate, connect, and bond with our families.

Family is something that a lot of us usually take for granted, oftentimes until it's too late and we're in trouble, or realize that we can longer be with them despite their vital roles in our lives.

Winding up, I'd love to advise you on embracing these difficult times with open arms, and taking the time to reassess your life, in order to develop healthy habits to handle life; like spending time in nature or being in service to others.

More about this on DE265 - What are you doing at home

It's understandable that a lot of people are suffering during this time. Taking a lesson from Paul in the bible, it's vital that we learn to develop the spirit of perseverance. Enduring through the pain is what leads to growth and progress in life.

Jake Brown and Music, All Genres, Celebrating Book #50, "Behind the Boards"21 Aug 202000:53:09

I'm joined by the dynamic Jake Brown on the show today. A man who has written amazing books about the music business, and everything that goes into music writing and production. His books span across all genres, ranging from Country, RnB, Hip Hop, and Pop.

Celebrating his 50th and latest book on the show with me, Jake Brown's ' Behind the Boards' features behind the scenes stories of country music's most notable artists, running from Tim McGraw, Clint Black, Vince Gill, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban and so many more.

Jake moved into Nashville in 2003 with only two books published at the time. Nashville has been more than a home for him, as it has sparked the inspiration behind his multiple book series. It was here that Jake started focusing on writing his books based on the interviews he booked with songwriters like Jack Douglas, Eddie Kramer, and Bob Ezrin.
In the span of 8 years, Jake was able to write 18 books.
Jake was driven into depression mode when his dog Hanover died. Focused on how to best cheer himself up, Jake started writing his Behind the boards Nashville series.
He began contacting Country song producers and writing the Nashville Songwriter. It was during his book series that Jake began interviewing and learning from songwriters and producers like Dave Cobb, Paul Waley, Shane McNally, Ross Copperman, Zach Crowl, Darius Rucker, Frank Rogers, Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney, and Nobert Putman.

Different types of Country Song producers.
While interviewing songwriters, producers, and singers. Jake noticed there are basically two types of country song producers.
Track producers - These are producers who play all the instruments and work on the entire track in the home studios.
Old School producers - these are producers who take a more traditional vibe of getting the entire band together for a weekend solely focused on producing music at the studio.
Old school producers can go as far as knocking out a couple of number one hits in an afternoon. Jake tells the story of how Darius Rucker's friend and Brad Paisley's producer, Frank Rogers worked on a single album in one afternoon which went on to knock out a couple of number one hits in Nashville.

There's a blend of both unique, short, and long-term relationships between singers, songwriters and producers in Nashville, and Country music as a whole. Jake, for one, has interviewed singer-producer duos that have a 10 - 30 year bond of working together.
In his latest book, Jake also dives into interesting stories of individuals that started off trying to become singers, only to end up working and enjoying songwriting and production. And also how singers, songwriters, and producers build connections that end up being lifetime relationships from the most unlikely of scenarios, with one, in particular, being between Taylor Swift and Nathan Chapman.
With over 300 number one hits included in his book and interviews, Jake dives into the behind the scenes backstories of Country's biggest stars in the last 20 - 30 years. How vulnerable they were when first starting out and how they've been able to grow, adapt, and overcome over time to become the superstars they are today.

Music production is a diverse process and works differently for every producer. It could be a long process of listening to thousands of different songs and picking just 30. Or, it could be an overnight sensation of writing, drafting, and producing number one hits in just one night.

The future of music.
With technology being the driving force over so many industries today, Music has also been majorly affected, both positively and negatively by both technology and the internet.
Streaming, Jake says, is the future of music. With 70% of record sales for weekly billboards coming from online streams and downloads, there's no denying the revenue powerhouse that the internet has proven to be.

Ringtones used to be a proven phenomenon in providing revenue for singers, but those days are all but gone.

There's also a trend of 360 types of deals where labels now get a piece of the live show revenues, a phenomenon that wasn't present in the past.

If you want to know more about the diverse and changing art in music production, you can hop over to YouTube, where Jake has over 100 hundred videos where through the countless interviews, he gives a broader outlook of how hits are produced and distributed.

Quotes
It takes you on an entertainment roller coaster and still acts as a reference guide. The main role of my book series is to give you a 3D outlook into how country music is produced behind the scenes.

The most important role of a songwriter in Nashville is to reflect the life of the audience through the music and lyrics. That's why so many songwriters in Nashville talk about getting their ideas while driving to work or during their everyday conversations.

Through the interviews done, you get an amazing combination of the different ways that records come alive. And ultimately, the more music you listen to, the more educated you become.

MK Burnell, "More Music Please" The Hudson Valley's newest podcast14 Aug 202000:41:33

Joining me on the show all the way from the beautiful Hudson Valley is MK Burnell.

Burnell was formerly the host of a show that aired at Radio Woodstock. She's also the founder of 'Locally Grown', a program at Radio Woodstock that helps feature and promote independent and emerging artists from the Hudson Valley.

She was dropped as part of the budget cuts that Radio Woodstock was trying to implement due to Covid19. Instead of throwing in the towel and regretting how things turned out, Burnell took her laying off as an opportunity to set up her own recording studio at home and start a podcast.

More Music Please - Quarantine Beat is the name of her new podcast, where Burnell interviews professionals from across the music industry about anything they'd love to discuss.
She enjoys performing with different bands, hiking, practicing the trumpet, and learning new languages.

Performing with Different bands.

Burnell is currently a member of 4 different bands. These include Uncle Dad - An all-female group that consists of four ladies. They all have different songwriting techniques, all of which mash-up really great to produce funky songs.

Local Freak - Burnell's longest-running band project. They perform a mix of covers and originals. They also love dancing and having a good time.

Cold Flair Repair - A local Hudson Valley band that consists of Andy Gladding, Dave Chapman, Chris Machia, and Brad Kelly where they enjoy playing yacht rock and funky soul.

Trailer Swift - Self evocative, Trailer Swift is a band where Burnell and the band members enjoy doing Taylor Swift covers while wearing torn up flannel.

International Relations
Originally an International Relations major at SUNY New Paltz, Burnell found her purpose in working with indie artists.
Burnell majored in IR while at college as she had an interest in learning more about the world and was optimistic about traveling around the world while working.

She's however very grateful for having gotten the opportunity to work with and learn from different artists while working as a radio host.

Locally Grown.
When she started working at Radio Woodstock 5 years ago, Burnell bugged the radio station to let her do her own show where she'd host local-grown talent.

When granted the opportunity, Burnell began to feature local bands, some of which she had the pleasure of working and performing with when starting out as a young indie artist.
Burnell saw Locally Grown as an opportunity to give back to the community that had once supported her. Locally Grown was also Burnell's way of improving Radio Woodstock's brand of featuring and promoting local and independent music.

Starting a new podcast.
Burnell has always had an interest in podcasts. She loves listening to them and always dreamt of starting one. The only obstacle at the time was lack of time and mental energy - because of her full-time work as a music director and radio host.

After losing her job when Corona struck, Burnell jumped at the opportunity of starting her new podcast.

She's really enjoyed the experience of podcasting so far and loves that she can conduct interviews in her own style and without a time limit - this of course, in contrast to working as a radio host. For instance, in her very first interview with John Ferrara, the duo discussed Midnight gospel - an animated web series featured on Netflix.

Burnell is grateful for the opportunity she got to work at Radio Woodstock, however, she's found the experience of going fully independent very exciting and hopes to continue being in control of her own projects and ditching the 9-5.

I learned a lot while studying IR. Having focused on South American politics, I found it very interesting how America meddled with so much of the South American political framework, and its contribution to their political, social, and economic instability.

Music has and will always evolve at a very fast pace. And I love that it does. I love connecting to all genres of music, including next-generation music which I don't naturally feel attracted to.

Anatomy of A Song - The Process, From Idea To Finished Product07 Aug 202000:30:02

Today's show is going to be a little different as I focus on the process that goes into producing my songs. It is my hope that you will all find the episode very insightful and entertaining, more so if you are an artist.

The song I'll be analyzing is Drill Down.
Drill Down is a song featured in my Geography of the Soul album, which I released in 2014.

How I draft my songs.
Having been blessed with creative songwriting skills, I usually try to focus on including at least 10-15 songs per album.

The album featured songs are as a result of more incomplete songs that I draft over a long period of time.

I love the process of not trying to finish a song on the first go.
Songs featured in the Geography of the soul album, for example, are a result of 50-70 mostly incomplete riffs, ideas, poetry, titles, and ideas.

I feel that it's important to grace the music writing process with time. The more time you give yourself to draft a song, the better the final version.

I go over the rough version of my songs over and over again, up until I feel that the final content is mature enough to be produced.
Titles are very important at the start of the writing process. You can start off from a great title and build your song around it.
For example, the title Drill Down inspired my chorus in the song.
The pre-chorus and chorus are about building a relationship based on genuine and open communication about who you are trying to uncover.

Demos are also very vital when producing. Personally, I love seeking help through honest communication with my colleagues and producers. I trust them to provide me with authentic and trustworthy comments about what they think of my lyrics and performance.

Even more important when performing your demos, remember to give it your very best in the studio. As a matter of fact, don't ever produce a demo unless you're on your A-game on that particular day. Because once you've produced a great demo, then you'll most definitely produce an even better song.

George Hillman, Songwriter, Musician, Engineer, Pastor, & God's Grace31 Jul 202001:13:13

George Hillman all the way from New Jersey is our guest today. Since 1994, George has been recording and performing his unique style of Christian music that's a blend of pop-rock and R&B. George is a producer and has helped engineer, and produce songs for local, regional, and widely known Christian artists, such as singer-songwriter, Gary Oliver, guitarist Mike Deasey of The Wrecking Crew Fame, Jason Alvarez, and Daniel M Stutz.
George is also a pastor at a Bloomfield, New Jersey Ministry.

If you've been blessed to hear one of his songs, then you can certainly agree that there's an uncompromising spiritual element that's present in every song that he's performed.
I was really compelled to have George on the show after I listened to his song 'In God We Trust'.

How George became a Pastor.

It was never in George's plan to walk in the path of being a shepherd of God's flock.

While growing up with a love and passion for music, George started a Bible Study Group in his local church. With the church experiencing immense growth as a result of the Bible Study started by George, the church pastor decided to ordain him.
As a pastor, George has a particular liking for people who struggle with being in terms of the church principles, because he also went through a similar experience while growing up.

Life-changing moment.

As a band playing in his local church. George as a youth was going through a phase where he felt disconnected to the church.
After performing at a retreat centre in Upstate New York with his band, a young rebellious George walked off stage to relax and cool his thoughts down. He veered off and found himself in a quiet library in Upstate, New York.

While at the library, George was drawn towards a particular book in the library - The Halley's Bible Handbook.

On the cover page, the handbook had instructions directing the reader to turn to Page 83, the most important page in the book.
After flipping to the page, George found himself in a verse by verse teaching section, with related case study examples. A reading experience that completely changed his understanding of the bible and its teachings.

Fast Forward to a couple of years later, and George transferred to a church where verse by verse teaching was the mode of preaching. He's been using this method of bible study ever since.

Church Culture.

Part of what George struggles with in life is the modern church culture, where many churches make people dependent on them.
Churches are building an addiction where the congregants can only worship and find peace in the church buildings. This complex culture is in contrast with early churches started by the Acts of the Apostles who had a more simple and straightforward approach of defining a church as the congregants, rather than the building and tools inside the building.

As Christians, we should question the kind of relationship we want to build with God and focus more on how we can strengthen our bond between us and Him.

In times like these, it's even more important to put our trust in God because of the greatness that he's done for us since the dawn of creation. Gratitude is the key to being happy and fulfilled in life. Be grateful and give thanks to the little or big that God has provided for you.

Quotes.

I was fascinated by the craft of making music. I'd spend hours listening to the stereo and my curiosity to understand how music is made is what drove me towards being an artist.

Engineering music is part of the magical process of producing great music. It starts when you write the lyrics alongside the vibe that you want your chords to communicate. Engineering is what ends the process, and helps get your message across.

As Christians, it's important we understand that loving God isn't enough. We should also stretch our love to other people, despite their beliefs or background.

Verse by verse teaching was a game-changer for me. It helped me as a Christian to have a clear and better understanding of the bible and its teachings.

The fact of the matter is that we all need God and His grace. I find it very wonderful that He has made Himself available to each and every one of us when we need him. And that's what inspired me to write the song "In God We Trust".

Ministry is every single thing you do as a Christian musician. So get into a relationship with God and let your whole life and music be inspired by Him.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, What Can You Do?24 Jul 202000:33:03

Starting off today's show with the magical sounds of a tropical beach in the South of Thailand.

With today's focus on the Great Pacific Garbage patch, my question to you is, how long do you think we have before it all goes away?

As a species, we are undoubtedly behind the destruction of countless marine and land plants and animals.

We're only getting worse by the day. Like the other day, I witnessed a lady come out from a car and throw a cigarette she was smoking on the ground and stepped on it.

The mere fact that she did everything like it was normal is simply astonishing. This is what we've become as a species.

In today's show I highlight the enormous amount of trash we are dumping in the oceans and how it is negatively impacting the marine ecosystem, in hope that we can change our attitude and save the oceans, sea's, and ultimately, our precious planet!

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Also known as The Pacific Trash Vortex, The Great Pacific Garbage Patch spans waters from the west coast of North America to Japan.

It consists of The Western Garbage Patch in Japan and The Eastern Garbage Patch that's between Hawaii and California.

The entire Great Pacific Garbage Patch is bounded by the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre - a circular storm pattern that's formed by the pacific ocean currents.
The center of the Gyre tends to be very calm and stable.

The circular motion of the gyre draws the debris into the calm center, where it becomes trapped to form the garbage patches.

The pacific garbage patch is Made up of microplastics that can't be seen by the naked eye. The microplastic is mixed with other debris like fishing gear and shoes.

70% of the marine debris in the Pacific garbage patch usually ends up sinking to the bottom of the ocean.
54% of the marine debris comes from land-based activities in North America, while 20% is as a result of offshore oil rigs and large cargo ships that dump or lose litter directly into the ocean.

The first trash vortex was discovered by Charles Moore. A sailor who was sailing from Hawaii to California after competing in a yachting race. Charles alongside his crew took note of the vortex when their ship was surrounded by millions of plastic pieces.

Plastics make up the majority of the ocean debris majorly because of two reasons:
a. Plastic is durable and low cost. Making it popular with manufacturers of consumer products
b. Plastic doesn't biodegrade. It only breaks into smaller pieces and becomes a part of the ocean ecosystem

Dangers of the ocean debris

Sea animals like seals and turtles sometimes confuse the microplastics for food and eat them. Which ends up killing them.
Sea animals get entangled in the nets found in pacific garbage patches and die.

The patch blocks sunlight from reaching plankton and algae in the ocean. This disrupts the food chain as sea animals such as turtles and fish we depend on, end up dying.

Plastics absorb pollutants such as PCBs from the seawater. This is later passed on to animals that feed on the small pieces of plastic.

Because the garbage is far off from any coastline. No country wants to take responsibility or fund the cleanup projects.
According to scientists and explorers, the best way everyone can be involved in the clean up is by limiting or eliminating our use of disposable plastics and substituting with biodegradable resources.

A lot of the global conglomerates are only profit-driven, and that's why plastic is such a commonly used resource. The only way this stops is if you as a person, decide to take action. Take responsibility and live your daily life in pursuit of a cleaner and healthier planet.
