What Equipment Will I Need to Start a Podcast?03 Nov 202100:02:45

Hey everyone! This is Ashley with RSS.com Podcasting! In this episode, we’re addressing one of the most common questions we’re asked, which is what equipment you need to start a podcast.

There are 6 things you need to produce your show:

👉 A Computer

👉 A Microphone

👉 Headphones

👉 Editing software

👉 Artwork and

👉 Podcast hosting

In future videos, we’ll do a deeper dive into these tools, but for now, we’ll just keep it general.

The first thing you need is a computer. This will be your main tool for recording, editing, and storing your podcast episodes.

Next, you need a microphone. Now, you might be thinking to yourself, I have one built into my computer - I’ll just use that. We would caution against that if you want to have good audio quality. Invest in a decent microphone. Your audience will thank you.

At some point, you may also want to consider things like a pop filter, which makes it so your Ps and Bs aren’t amplified, and a boom stand which holds your mic in place.

Another thing you’ll need is a good set of headphones. They allow you to hear what’s being recorded so you can catch background noise as it’s happening and fix it, or adjust your position if you’re too muffled or distant.

Then, you’ll need some editing software to get rid of background noise, eliminate dead space, add your intro, and much more. We recommend GarageBand for Mac or Audacity for PC.

Artwork is another element you’ll need for producing your show. This is the graphic you’ll use to market your show on your hosting site as well as podcast directories. You can create your own artwork using a program like Canva. The other option is to have a graphics designer create a custom piece for you.

The final thing you need to produce your show is a podcast hosting account. A good hosting company will generate and update your RSS feed, create a website where your podcasts can live, and be easy to use. We’ll leave a link in the description for how to start a free trial with RSS Podcasting.

Like we mentioned at the beginning of this video, we’ll be doing future videos further breaking down some of the equipment and tools you need to launch. Let us know in the comments if there are more videos you think we should create to help you in your podcasting journey. That’s all for now. Thanks for watching!

A Chat with Alexandra Fasulo of The Freelance Fairytales15 Dec 202100:25:30

Are you thinking of starting a podcast? Now may be the best time to do it! In this episode of Podcasting 101 with RSS.com, Alexandra Fasulo talks about how she got started in podcasting, how you can do it too, her journey as a freelancer, and how podcasting can impact the lives of your followers.

About the Guest

[00:18] Alex has worked as a freelance writer for seven years. She began doing it in 2015, unaware that it would become as sought after of a way to make a living as it is now. When she was 22, she quit from her job and began freelance writing. Alex attempted a variety of other things, but freelancing was the one that took off for her and led to a lot of success.

[01:37] Alex created her podcast, The Freelance Fairytales in February 2021 because her followers basically begged her to do it.

Diving into Podcasting Head First

[03:22] For Alex, podcasting has a lot of intangible and tangible perks.

[04:45] Alex's classes have only been available for a little over a year. They were then put up for sale in October of 2020,

[06:36] Alex has a habit of doing many things at once, which she sometimes sees as a fault in character.

[07:06] She said she isn't particularly tech-savvy, so she took to social media to ask for advice on starting a podcast. Someone suggested she use RSS.com to host her show, and she did because it was easy to do.

[09:36] Alex wishes her podcast had a higher ranking, and she'd like to have a chance to grow her audience enough to create something like a TV show.

[11:58] The majority of the show’s guests are from TikTok – Alex’s favorite social media platform by far.

[13:11] Alex's best buddy is in charge of her freelance writing agency, though her freelance writing business isn't that active right now. This is in part because she's working on a book.

Dealing With Haters

[14:09] Alex deals with her haters by simply smiling at them and assuming that the individual isn't in the right mental or emotional space.

[15:05] Don't think about the people who will despise you. Even if there is only one person in the world you'll help - think about them.

[18:19] Alex looks at Fiverr objectively, noting that they've monopolized the freelance market.

[20:20] If you put in just one hour a day, and follow all of Alex’s advice, you have the chance to become financially free, which means you won't have to worry about money or to pay your expenses. There are a variety of approaches you can take, but one of them is to sign up for Fiverr and start offering services.

[22:08] When Alex quit her job she had no ideas where freelancing would take her. These days, it seems to be taking her further than her wildest dreams.

John asked Kate if she wanted to quit her job and come on board as the operations or heartbeat behind the whole setup. For the past nine years, they've been producing Entrepreneurs on Fire. They have since launched seven or eight different kinds of podcasts.

Breaking Down the Systems and Processes

[03:23]

They emphasize the need of having a content system in place so that, regardless of the type of podcast you're producing, you have a production strategy and system in place. With a podcast, consistency is so critical that if you debut and then spend all of your time trying to stay up with your production schedule, it's not as much fun, and you'll quickly grow irritated because things aren't going as planned.

[04:26]

Their content production system is one of the most important systems they have. It's mostly dependent on content batching.

Tools to Create Systems and Processes

[6:36]

Systems are incredibly simple at the ground level. Most of their systems are built on a Google spreadsheet or a task management system like Asana.

[9:42]

Creating templates and having a checklist to look at every time you perform that thing and enhance it is an important step in the process.

Implementing Systems and Processes From the Very Beginning

[11:36]

Systems are going to help you get back time.

What Kate wishes she had known when she was planning her very first podcast

[14:01]

Not everything has to be perfect. Not everything is going to be perfect.

Podcasters not using systems drive Kate bananas

[16:03]

No one who uses systems and processes ever regrets it

Things that Kate is doing that doesn't have a system in place for yet that she still wish she did

[17:30]

Being a guest on other podcasts or doing series, Kate goes in waves of being adamant about having people use her scheduler so that she's batching those and then having an opportunity come along that she wants to do, but it's totally off from her schedule. Kate is working hard on making exceptions few and far between. But sometimes, it's tough because she loves doing this stuff.

Kate shares the free program they have

[19:03]

They have a free podcast course. https://www.eofire.com/fpc is a completely free eight video series on how to create and launch a podcast. In addition to that, they have an online course and community called Podcaster’s Paradise, where they'll help you create, grow and monetize your podcast.

The History of RSS Podcasting with Ben and Alberto - Part 201 Dec 202100:14:14

In this second part of the History of RSS Podcasting, Ben Richardson and Alberto Betella will talk about why you should start podcasting RIGHT NOW. They will also talk about the future of podcasting and how it's slowly becoming relevant in the media space. Stay tuned!

Why is now the best time to start a Podcast?

[2:02]

The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago and now. So in starting a podcast, if you feel like you have something to say or can impart a little light into the world, that is a great time to start a podcast. A podcast is not for the person speaking. It's for the person listening. If you can impart something, and leave your digital mark on the world, then your time to start a podcast is right now.

[3:38]

Your third podcast might be your best podcast. Your 15th podcast might be your best podcast, or your first might be your best podcast. But you aren't going to get there if you have something to say by waiting. With RSS, you can get a free episode and upload it. Then tomorrow, if you don't like that episode or feel like you can edit it better and more briefly, you can swap it out. Once you've fine-tuned what your message is, go ahead and create your second episode.

[4:35]

Podcasting is easy to start, and it's cheap.

Why Diversity is important for Multiple Cultures to Start a Podcast

[5:36]

There's something different about all of us. There's also so much that is common among all of us. Podcasting is a great way to experience that. RSS celebrates diversity because we feel that everybody's voice has meaning and matters at the same time. Podcasting is also about the listener and your message having a chance to resonate with somebody else. Because of this, podcasting is a very powerful thing.

Growth of RSS

[8:58]

There's some commonality in RSS.com Podcasting's approach that makes Mexico and Latin America target-rich for us in the sense of growing podcasters, growing produced content, and fostering the economic models that exist down there. RSS has many initiatives and many technological opportunities as the platform continues to grow.

Future of Podcasting

[12:14]

People must understand that technological advancements are coming down through hosting providers or listening apps that will help change podcasting for the better. They're going to deliver richer content in a way that is more interactive. They're going to allow for greater flexibility from the hosts' perspective to get their message heard, understood, and monetize a podcast.

The History of RSS Podcasting with Ben and Alberto - Part 101 Dec 202100:22:27

In this episode, the founders of RSS.com, Ben Richardson and Alberto Betella share their journey of building RSS.com.

How Alberto and Ben started working together

[1:44]

Ben has owned rss.com since 2013. He purchased it from somebody that was looking to sell it. It was happening at the same time that Google was "killing the reader." Ben noticed that many of his customer support emails were questions about podcasting. As those questions grew over time, he realized that he needed to offer a podcasting solution and a feed reader solution.

[2:47]

After realizing that he needed to find a partner, Ben reached out to Alberto Betella, who has been in the podcast space for a long time. After finding him online, Ben reached out to Alberto with an email about RSS. The two immediately formed a partnership.

[4:18]

The first thing Alberto thought about Ben was that he had the technology, the content management system, and the appetite to build RSS in a way that could scale up. Ben knew Alberto had the experience and that together they could make RSS something special.

Love for News

[5:55]

Ben is a news-obsessed person. He was very keen on his news consumption, so he would lose out if everybody stopped using RSS feeds. Ben loves staying current, and he couldn’t imagine a world without the feed reader

The Start of Podcasting in RSS

[7:34]

RSS first started with the Podcast Generator codebase, but it was replaced entirely after the first year.

Ben's journey to RSS

[08:06]

Ben's wife and their desire to have a family is what led them to where they are now. From starting his first business to RSS, Ben's journey was always a blend of opportunity and passion. RSS as a podcasting platform is very mission-driven. Ben and Alberto are giving people a voice. Their current focus is on cultural and language diversity and supporting the voices of other communities.

Alberto's journey to RSS

[12:41]

Alberto is a data-driven person who wants more commercial impact.

From getting his Ph.D. to entering the corporate world, he spun out Moonshot into a large company, which raised $36 million. Alberto then decided to leave the corporate world and join RSS full time.

Meeting for the First Time

[14:52]

Between COVID and other intervening obligations and things, Ben and Alberto's first meet worked out at the Podcast Movement in Nashville. Both of them never knew how the other looked. They were constantly interacting online from separate continents. Both understood each other's priorities and family situations, however. Because of their online interactions, meeting for the first time was a nice experience for them.

[17:26]

Ben and Alberto didn't meet each other, not because they were on two different continents. Both of their objectives were aligned, and they wanted to meet even before the COVID-19 pandemic struck. But with various circumstances, a meeting just didn’t work out.

[18:24]

"Even if you aren't engaging with someone in person, you can still create something magical."

RSS as a Podcasting Platform

[19:10]

RSS as a podcasting platform is extremely easy. Making something simple but accessible for people who want to start is complex. The key differentiator with other companies is that RSS is extremely simple.
