| Beers (and Chelsea sandwich) for Breakfast | 14 May 2025 | 01:00:13 | |
Eddie Howe's trophy-winning Mags are on the brink of returning to the Champions League next season after a lightning start and a thunderous finish provided emphatic bookends to a nervy bit in between. The final result was 2-0, at least according to most reliable judges, and with two games to go, it's difficult to see how Newcastle can lose three places in the league. In fact with a trip to Arsenal next, might we be looking up instead! Helping us savour the success this week is special guest Paul Ferris, NUFC's favourite polymath, who has a new book out but doesn't need any help selling tickets to the launch. There's also a first update from Mark Allison who has reached Pennsylvania on his epic run across America. https://www.rungeordierun.com/ Hosted on Acast. | Stark Waughs: NUFC strike back to take point at Brighton | 06 May 2025 | 01:13:40
A long time ago, at an AMEX arena far, far away... Chris Waugh watched a Jason Tindall-less Newcastle United fight back to draw against Brighton. Yankuba Minteh's goal, followed by a bizarre series of reactions, had seemingly put a dent in our Champions League pursuit, but referee Craig Pawson's third penalty award survived VAR and Isak slotted home. Meanwhile, closer to home at Blackburn's Ewood Park, NUFC Women rounded off an encouraging debut season in the second tier with a 5-1 win. We speak to manager Becky Langley at length on the lessons learned and what we can expect next term.

| Carabao Cup Final Preview | 13 Mar 2025 | 00:54:10 | |
Here we go again! Carabao anxiety is morphing into cuppy fever at PotT towers with the mood enhanced by victory at West Ham (and Chris's negativity notable by its absence on Tuesday; something he more than balances out with one stratospheric stat). George, in particular, while not quite upbeat, is certainly buoyed by his examination of Eddie Howe's working patterns and the after-glow of that conversation with Matt Richie. So much so that the appearance of his old boss, and the trauma it may have provoked, is taken in stride. That old boss, as it goes, is Tony Evans, former Football Editor at The Times, and now presenter of The Athletic's Liverpool podcast. Even our correspondents are on good form, coming up with madcap ways Liverpool can have their post-PSG funk prolonged. This show should come with a health warning, to be honest. Side effects may include optimism...

| We'll always have Paris... Dortmund put the dampeners on our CL party | 26 Oct 2023 | 00:44:54 | |
A poorly Taylor Payne holds court with Chris Waugh, George Caulkin and, for the last time in his official capacity as a full-time Newcastle reporter, Jacob Whitehead. It's no inquest, though. A physical Borussia Dortmund, with a plan, and one or two injury blows threw us slightly off our stride, which is enough to make the difference at the elite level. With Tonali's ten month ban now confirmed, we will take a depleted squad to Wolverhampton hoping for three Premier League points with no more injuries.

| Stroll through Palace on our grounds sets up Dortmund date | 23 Oct 2023 | 00:42:16 | |
Taylor Payne is playing mediator, albeit not a very neutral one, with George Caulkin and Chris Waugh at loggerheads. Could it be the least interesting feud in history? Perhaps we're restless because everything is going so well on the pitch. Crystal Palace were no match for Newcastle at St James's Park on Saturday; Dortmund should provide a stiffer test on Wednesday. Becky Langley's NUFC Women also strolled to victory on Sunday and there was a heartening reception for Sandro Tonali with news imminent on his punishment for illegal betting. | Tonali Update, Burnley Stalemate, & Palace Preview | 19 Oct 2023 | 00:39:27
We're all together again for our only podcast of the week, and our first opportunity to react to the huge news that Sandro Tonali has been implicated in an illegal betting scandal from his time in Italy. Details are emerging in waves, albeit at a hectic pace, but it looks like Tonali will face a lengthy ban from football. We consider the implications for the player himself and for the team and the club. Not many goals to talk about on the pitch: it was a slightly disappointing result for Becky Langley's women, despite a dominant performance against league leaders Burnley, and nil-nil is often the score when Crystal Palace visit in the Premier League.

Live from the Gosforth Civic Theatre in the heart of *checks notes* Newcastle's most middle class suburb, it's our stage debut! With special guest Alan from Work(!!!!), Taylor and the boys look back at a magnificent two-year spell since the takeover and rejoice in last week's battering of Paris Saint-Germain. Please note; although a lot of saucy audience-only stuff has been removed (including the whole of part two, a live Q&A) this podcast still has some tasty language, even by our grubby standards.

| "Queen" Isak wins us a point at West Ham | 09 Oct 2023 | 00:40:05 | |
Full house again on our last podcast before we go live to the geordie nation at Gosforth Civic Theatre on Thursday night. Alexander Isak flipped a tired performance on its head with two goals as Eddie Howe's men came from behind to lead West Ham at the London Stadium. Unfortunately, they couldn't see out the game, but a point feels pretty good after a momentous week and we're in decent shape going into the international break. No such problems for the women's team. Bridget Galloway kept her magical run going as Becky Langley's lasses ran out comfortable winners at Liverpool Feds; they will take a 100% record into their home game with unbeaten Burnley on Saturday. (Jacob's article on Alexander Isak referenced in the show can be found at: https://theathletic.com/4531978/2023/08/08/alexander-isak-explosion-newcastle/)

Wowowowowowow! The whole team have been assembled to look back on what may be* the greatest night in Newcastle's footballing history. So, sit forward, don't relax, but do enjoy our analysis of a demolition. Luis Enrique's PSG team, featuring the world's greatest playerTM, did not know what hit them at St James's Park. Taylor Payne brings you our Monday show with George Caulkin and Jacob Whitehead celebrating football's sexiest two words... we'll whisper them into your ear. Paris Saint-Germain getting relegated from Ligue 1 is about as likely as Jacob winning Masterchef, but Peter Rutzler, THE RELEGATOR, joins us for our Champions League preview so maybe he can help us put them into the Europe League. All that, plus the latest madcap victory in a great start to the season for NUFCW, several misguided animal metaphors, and an inquiry into potential phone-w*nkery.

| Carabao REaction: Burst of Ferocity beats Pep | 28 Sep 2023 | 00:40:26 | |
Taylor Payne reviews the Carabao Cup Third Round win over Manchester City with George Caulkin and perennial chip-pisser Chris Waugh. Eddie Howe made ten changes including a home debut for teenager Lewis Miley and, while the youngsters performed admirably, City dominated first-half possession at St James's Park. But, the game changed with half-time subs Bruno and Gordon triggering a furious burst of pressure resulting in a goal for Isak that sealed the tie. Our reward is a trip to Old Trafford in the next round, but next we host Burnley in the league.

Chris Waugh and Jacob Whitehead join Taylor Payne for a detailed breakdown of Newcastle's incredible 8-0 win at Bramall Lane. It was the club's biggest ever away win in league football and, for the first time in Premier League history, eight different players scored. Next up, the trifling matter of Manchester City in the third round of the Carabao Cup. Without anything else to be negative about, Chris rails against the concept of sponsorship.

| Hope in our hearts after West Ham win | 11 Mar 2025 | 00:42:55 | |
Eddie Howe celebrated enthusiastically after the final whistle at the London Stadium. While it may not have been much of a spectacle, the 1-0 win (with a goal from captain Bruno Guimaraes) represented a real boost to the team's confidence. The preceding week had seen gut punch after gut punch... Anthony Gordon's suspension for the Carabao Cup Final (which will not be appealed) was followed by serious injuries to Lewis Hall and Sven Botman and fans had to suffer another season ticket price rise as well. CEO Darren Eales addressed the media on various matters and assured all attendees that Alexander Isak, Eddie Howe, and progress on infrastructure were all top priorities for a committed ownership group. Now, the club faces table-toppers Liverpool for a chance to make history.

Taylor Payne, Chris Waugh, and Jacob Whitehead review three vital Premier League points after Eddie Howe's men beat Brentford again to regain some crucial momentum going into the UCL group stage. George Caulkin and Chris Waugh join Taylor Payne for our second show of the September International Break with Jacob Whitehead incapacitated after a slight pace misjudgement in the baking North East weather on Sunday's Great North Run. There's no room for error for Eddie Howe, aka the man in black, as he readies his men for a gigantic week with crucial Premier League fixtures sandwiching a midweek trip to Milan in the Champions League. NUFC's Women have been, necessarily, flawless so far this season. | Running on empty? Sir Brendan Foster re-energises the pod | 05 Sep 2023 | 00:56:25
After Newcastle's uncharacteristically fragile performance on Saturday, Taylor Payne analyses the defeat at Brighton with George Caulkin and Jacob Whitehead. But, if there's a better guest to put some spring back into our steps, then we don't know who it would be. Sir Brendan Foster is a titanic sporting figure and, just a few days before the 43rd Great North Run, he joins us to talk about the event's great success, Sir Bobby Robson, and doing laps of Wembley. A great start to the season for NUFC women, whose new signings are settling in very quickly, and an international break for the men with our fandom, and George, ready for a brief change of scenery. *** • Grab your EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal by going to https://nordvpn.com/tyne to get a Huge Discount off your NordVPN Plan + 4 months for free! The Athletic's Chris Waugh and Jacob Whitehead join Taylor Payne to review Newcastle United's magnificent 5-1 victory over Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season. Sandro Tonali wasted no time getting on the scoresheet as he took to English football like an anatra to acqua, and Eddie Howe's midfield looks to have an added dimension with the Italian joining Bruno and Joelinton in the engine room. Alexander Isak was another of several standout performances with two for him, and Harvey Barnes got an assist and a goal in just 22 minutes on his competitive debut.

| PotT Predictions 2023-24: Hopefully Howe's men are in better shape than us! | 10 Aug 2023 | 00:50:56 | |
It's the dawn of the new Premier League season but you find Taylor Payne, George Caulkin, and Chris Waugh in a state of disarray, so much so that we can't even get through the apology for the last episode's disastrous start! We're supposed to be making our predictions for the season to come with contributions from Twitter, but George barely predicts anything and Chris (deliberately?) answers an entirely different question from the one Taylor asks him. Onto the opening day fixture against Villa then, and it's our idea of Eddie Howe's first line-up... or is it the team we want to see... or maybe a bit of both. Frankly, it's a minor miracle you're even listening to this at all (hopefully you are).

| Pre-Carabao calamity: the Seagull sequel | 03 Mar 2025 | 00:55:02 | |
Newcastle fans were left with a vomit-inducing case of deja vu on Sunday after the final home game before the Carabao Cup final saw another day of injury and insult. Lewis Hall was ruled out of the FA Cup tie vs Brighton and has consulted with a specialist, leaving his fitness in doubt, while Anthony Gordon saw red, and saw red; he now faces a three-match ban which would include the trip to Wembley. As if that weren't enough, Danny Welbeck booted us out of the FA Cup as well and we're scratching around for positives. Perhaps Isak's perfect pen, or Dan Burn collecting the Bobby Robson award, or The Lasses' home win.

| Are We Ready, Eddie? | 07 Aug 2023 | 00:35:19 | |
Taylor Payne looks back at the last weekend of pre-season action for Eddie Howe's men with George Caulkin and Chris Waugh. Newcastle raised the Sela Cup on Sunday after wins against Fiorentina and Villareal but, with new signings Harvey Barnes and Sandro Tonali on the pitch, and Tino Livramento in the stands, the primary goal was integration. A positive win for Becky Langley's NUFC Women rounded off the weekend nicely, and everything feels good going into the new season... not that you'd know it listening to George. Taylor Payne, George Caulkin, and Chris Waugh make history with the inaugural Thursday edition of The Athletic's Newcastle United podcast, but it looks like breaking news will still ruin our recordings with a deal for Tino Livramento announced, honestly, ten minutes after we finished talking. The highly-rated Southampton fullback looks to be a long-term project as he recovers from a knee injury, and it just so happens that we are looking at Eddie Howe's defensive options today. We also examine the ticketing controversy earlier in the week and George looks back on the New Jersey leg of his US trip before the Sela Cup rounds off our pre-season this weekend.

| A Season for the Ages: the Class of 2022/23 | 31 May 2023 | 01:24:13 | |
Taylor Payne hosts a Pod on the Tyne review of the 2022/23 season at Newcastle United, one that has thrilled and astounded in equal measure. From a remarkable Carabao Cup run, culminating in a near miss at Wembley, to a Premier League campaign which built on the post-takeover momentum of last season's great escape to catapult Eddie Howe's men into the Champions League. Not forgetting, of course, a league title for the newly adopted NUFC Women's team. The Athletic's trio of Newcastle writers; George Caulkin, Chris Waugh, and Jacob Whitehead, are on hand to share memories and stretch a ludicrous awards ceremony metaphor to its absolute breaking point as we report on a remarkable effort from, essentially, the whole squad and staff and we've a special memo courtesy of Alan (from Work) Shearer. Taylor Payne, Chris Waugh, and George Caulkin are brushing off their disappointment after Mikel Arteta and Arsenal kept their title hopes alive with a win at St James's Park. It was an emotional day for all concerned, but we're happy with the performance from Eddie Howe's "elite" team in what was apparently our first home defeat in the league this season. Welcome to this BONUS edition of Pod on the Tyne, organised to commemorate the **checks notes** routine win for Liverpool at home to Newcastle... Yes, Chris made us all get together to reflect on a dress rehearsal that definitely could have gone a lot worse for Newcastle, but equally gave us no additional reasons to expect a winning performance at Wembley in March's Carabao Cup final. Of course, the late withdrawal of Alexander Isak through injury was the main talking point, and one that put a dagger through most Geordie hearts. Taylor Payne welcomes The Athletic's Newcastle United trio of George Caulkin, Chris Waugh, and Jacob Whitehead to another week's discussion, albeit not the most pleasant one we've had of late. Eddie Howe's men followed up their resolute win over Wolves with a dominant performance at Forest; the margin should have been greater, but Alexander Isak provided two moments of incisiveness and we go into the international break eyeing up third place in the Premier League. Becky Langley's title-chasing women's team also gained six crucial points this week, three of which came in a 1-0 win over main rivals Durham Cestra. Onwards and upwards, we hope... | Howe's Shuffled Pack Earns Crucial Wolves Win | 14 Mar 2023 | 00:44:31
It's fair to say there's been a substantial sigh of relief this week as Taylor Payne analyses a vital Premier League win with Chris Waugh and Jacob Whitehead. Eddie Howe made some big calls, not least resting top scorer Miggy Almiron, but Alexander Isak stamped his authority on the game and Newcastle overcame a Wolves fightback to clinch all three points and revitalise the Champions League chase. *** • Get a FREE 1-year supply of immune-supporting Vitamin D AND 5 FREE travel packs with your first purchase at athleticgreens.com/EPL

| Two Nil (Again!), Bruno in Demand, and Wolves | 07 Mar 2023 | 00:54:43 | |
Taylor Payne takes you through another week, at least we think it was another week, in the life of NUFC with the cream of North East football writing talent and Chris Waugh. Manchester City followed the reds of Liverpool and Manchester by beating us 2-0, but never without a struggle; if only we could score a goal! Meanwhile, The Athletic's senior writer, George Caulkin, wonders what life would be like treading the boards and Jacob Whitehead is doing his best to shake off the unwanted jinx tag.

| Oh Great, We're Off to Manchester: City Preview & Final Final Debrief | 01 Mar 2023 | 00:33:41 | |
A tired Taylor Payne looks back over the debris of cup final weekend with The Athletic's Newcastle United correspondents, Chris Waugh and the accursed Jacob Whitehead. One last cruel twist of the irony knife sees us heading to Manchester this weekend. City have returned to something like their best, so Saint-Maximin and co will have to conjure a performance at least as good as in our previous meeting at St James's Park. Produced by Ollie Bellwood.

| Carabao Cup Final: Wembley Weekend is Just the Beginning | 27 Feb 2023 | 00:33:21 | |
Taylor Payne and Chris Waugh bring you the sounds of Wembley Way, and one or two from Trafalgar Square, as Newcastle United square up to Manchester United with the EFL League Cup on the line. Produced by Ollie Bellwood (who also did a couple of the interviews).

| Carabao Cup 'Keeper Chaos: Karius, Can He? | 22 Feb 2023 | 01:00:05 | |
Taylor Payne hosts the Pod on the Tyne Cup Final Preview! Joining him, The Athletic's Senior Writer George Caulkin and Newcastle correspondents Chris Waugh and Jacob Whitehead. Nick Pope really put a spanner in the works with his red card against Liverpool on Saturday. It was a result to forget, even if we played OK, and the highlight was definitely Wor Flags. But, with the Carabao Cup Final against Manchester United this weekend we're confident of a performance from the boys, and there's definitely a chance we'll be bringing silver to Newcastle! | Beating Forest 4-3 and why it's good, actually | 24 Feb 2025 | 00:54:57
Newcastle United were, at one time, primarily famous for being on the wrong end of a 4-3 scoreline; now, somehow, we're regretting being on the right end of one... That might seem contradictory but the nature of Sunday's win (against one of our main Premier League rivals, remember) was a trademark burst of St James's Park energy followed by the exhale of a loose accordion. BUT win we did, Lewises Hall and Miley were both class, and some pressure has eased off our midweek trip to the champions-elect at Anfield, a game that will have more subtext than George's last trip to see Swedish cinema (and we're not talking about Alexander Isak's 50 goals).

| Bore Draw at Bournemouth... Time for a Bobby Dazzler | 14 Feb 2023 | 00:49:22 | |
It's Bobby '90 week on The Athletic and Taylor Payne hosts the latest edition of Pod on the Tyne with George Caulkin, Jacob Whitehead, and Chris Waugh on board to discuss our celebration of the great man and his legacy. The Liverpool game will be a special occasion, which makes it easy to move on from the disappointment of the draw at Bournemouth. It's been a slightly flat couple of weeks, but perhaps a little distractedness can be forgiven. *** • Visit babbel.com/play and use code ATHLETIC at checkout to receive 6 months for free with purchase of a 6-month subscription
