On today's much too long episode of Playback, we dive into the mystical world of Lee "Scratch" Perry, and the masterpiece HEART OF THE CONGOS!

We talk about The Black Ark recording studio that Perry built in his backyard yard which was covered from top to bottom in mystical writings, sculptures, and painted symbols. We demonstrate the effects and techniques he employed to achieve such a murky, magical sound like the one featured on Heart of the Congos.

We also talk about the cadre of unbelievable musicians that Perry had at his disposal for this album, and discuss exactly how sound of mind Perry was when it ultimately came to burning down his own studio.

Today we're so excited to present our interview with the legendary SCIENTIST!

Hopeton Overton Brown (also known as Scientist) grew up working in and around some of the most remarkable studios in Jamaica under the tutelage of "Coxone" Dodd, King Tubby, and has mixed some of the most renowned albums in Jamaican history.

In addition to his mix work, Scientist also produced a string of some of the greatest dub albums of all time in the 80s. Thanks to our dear friend ⁨@DUBROBOT⁩ , the four of us were able to have a wide-ranging discussion about mixing, Wailing Souls, King Tubby, and the recording industry.

In this discussion, we use Fire House Rock as a jumping-off point to discuss one of the greatest production teams ever assembled, which we are dubbing "The Four Horsemen." The Hoo Kim Brothers and their legendary recording studio Channel One, Henry "Junjo" Lawes, Scientist, and Roots Radics. Together, these four, alongside Wailing Souls, created one of the most beautiful reggae albums in the entire canon.

We break down the studio, the engineers, the producers, the mix, the musicians, and the songwriting. This is a heavy, deep dive into Fire House Rock.
