126. Science Illustration, AI Cardinals, and Frozen Asters w/ J. Spahr
What's up, Plant People?? On today's episode, I chatted with scientific illustrator, J Spahr of @Science_Visuals to unpack how art turns complex research into clear, accurate stories that spark curiosity. From watercolor botanicals to layered digital paintings and ecosystems in one frame, we explore process, ethics, and impact.
• the path from a found textbook to a science illustration career • Europe’s legacy of artists working with scientists • art as storytelling and science communication • choosing mediums and building layered digital workflows • designing infographics that condense seasons, species, and behavior • client collaboration, revisions, and scientific accuracy • social media’s trade-offs and unexpected reach • why AI images miss context, accuracy, and trust • the joy of learning fast through research illustration • practical plant science: why asters shrug off frost

A perfect circle of mushrooms in the grass can feel like a message. We follow that feeling into the heart of fungi and folklore with Amanda McLoughlin and Julia Schifini of Spirits, exploring why mushrooms unsettle us, how they anchor myth, and what they can teach us about living with limits and wonder. From fairy rings and house spirits to cordyceps and body horror, we trace the line between ecology and story: a mycelial network expands and fruits at the edge, myth calls it a threshold, and we decide whether to cross.
We dig into the science that fuels the myths—external digestion, predatory oyster mushrooms hunting nematodes, and the eerie intelligence of networks that appear overnight. Then we connect those facts to the rules of folklore: hospitality laws, shared flood stories, and warnings against greed that echo modern forager ethics. We also examine the complicated modern history of psychedelics, sacred ritual, and the mid‑century rush that stripped context in favor of spectacle, reminding ourselves that power without reciprocity becomes a curse in every tradition.
Finally, we turn to fungi as caretakers: recyclers of forests, soil makers, and even potential allies against plastic pollution. Along the way, Amanda and Julia share why house spirits matter, how rituals make homes feel alive, and why returning to stories of reciprocity might be the most practical climate strategy of all. Press play for a smart, spooky tour of mushrooms, myth, and the moral math of sharing a planet. If this conversation re‑enchanted your sense of the woods, subscribe, share with a curious friend, and leave a review telling us the mushroom story you’ll never forget.

Cassie Yahnian and Danielle LaRock share the captivating journey of their podcast National Park After Dark, celebrating four years of exploring the mysteries, histories, and conservation stories of America's public lands.
• Former veterinary technicians who bonded over their shared love of outdoor spaces and morbid curiosity • Transformed casual conversations about national park mysteries into a wildly successful podcast • Use compelling storytelling to convey conservation messages and outdoor ethics more effectively than direct instruction • Emphasize the importance of responsible recreation with current national park staffing shortages • Highlight the humbling power of nature to provide perspective and grounding in our increasingly digital lives • Recommend supporting national parks through donations and volunteering for trail maintenance • Share personal favorite parks including Yellowstone and Grand Tetons, with deeply personal connections to these spaces • Advise listeners to trust their intuition and prioritize time for activities that bring true meaning and joy

What's up plant people? I'm not sure I've ever talked to another guest who's done so many different and incredible things before they turned 30. Tyler Froberg is the head farmer at Hope Farms in Houston, TX. He runs the farm, but also works with programs for kids, veterans, and everyone in between. He's really done a little bit of everything and is such an inspiring guy. I'm so glad I finally got to connect with him after nearly a year. You can find him pretty much everywhere on social media. Check out Tyler and Hope farms and enjoy the episode!

What's up, Plant People?? Listen, there are a lot of good things for you and one of those things is for you to not die lost in the woods. To help make sure that wish comes true, my friend Paul Csomo from the Varmints Podcast came on the show for today's episode to tell you some things he's learned from his hobby of studying wilderness survival. We also talk a lot about starting a podcast, listening to podcasts, and about gas station sushi. Paul is a wonderful human, and I think you're really going to enjoy this. Don't eat the sushi, don't eat the mushroom, and don't die in the woods.

Hey Plant People! Welcome back for the first new episode of 2021! I'm trying out some new formatting stuff, but I'm stoked about today's episode! I talked with Rachel Boyd, who's a Jazz musician, radio producer for KTTZ (the Texas Tech University station and local public media affiliate), and the host of the brand new In The Grow podcast. We talk about music, life, and the radical act that is growing your own food. It's hopeful and fun and I know you're going to love it. Go check out the trailer for In The Grow with Rachel Boyd anywhere podcasts are found and get excited about episode 1 dropping this Thursday, 1/21/2021!

Happy 2021! This is technically the 50th episode of Planthropology (don't let the episode numbers fool you) so I wanted to celebrate with a replay of one of my favorite episodes from last year! Check out this wonderful episode with Texas Tech Department of Plant and Soil Science department chair, Dr. Glen Ritchie! Also, be sure to listen to this episode to find out how you can earn some free Planthropology swag. Thanks for listening, and here's to a great 2021!
You can find Dr. Ritchie on the Plant and Soil Science website below. You'll also be able to find him on Twitter if I can ever get him to tell me his Twitter handle. Enjoy the show and let me know what you think!

Hey there, Plant People! This is a very special bonus episode because it includes a whole bunch of my good podcast friends! I'm in a little (ok, not THAT little) group of podcasters who talk about science and academia on their shows, and we all thought it would be fun to do a live-streamed wrap up of 2020. This is the audio recording of that live stream which took place a couple of days ago. It's fun and encouraging we spend VERY little time talking about COVID and a lot of time talking about the good things we've learned and experienced in our podcast journeys. Be sure to follow all the shows listed below on Twitter and check out their podcasts! I love all you Cool Plant People and wish you ALL the best in 2021!!!

This isn't the episode that was supposed to come out today, but it was the one I felt like I needed to do. I graduate on Friday, and recorded this (longer than intended) piece about my experience through my PhD and where I go from here. I hope you get something out of it! It was certainly therapeutic for me to record.
Oh, also, I started a new podcast! I wanted to be a part of #NaPodPoMo for November, where podcasters are posting content every day, but it didn't fit well with Planthropology. Because of that, The Plant Prof was born! Tune in weekly for plant facts, garden tips and tricks, answers to your questions, and whatever else pops into my head! Episodes will be bite sized and never more than 10-15 minutes long. You can find the show anywhere podcasts live and at the Linktree below!

Roey, a music industry marketing professional and lo-fi producer, uses his "dad jazz" instrumental music to fund native plant installations across Nashville and beyond.
• Growing up in a family of avid gardeners and nature enthusiasts instilled a deep appreciation for native plants and natural spaces • Names his songs after native plants and uses all proceeds to purchase seeds from Roundstone, a native plant seed farm in Kentucky • Transformed his yard into a 4,000 square foot wildflower haven that serves as both beautiful habitat and practical barrier from busy streets • Works with schools, city planners, and neighborhoods to create native plant installations that help reduce flooding and filter pollutants • Explains how native plants require less maintenance than conventional landscaping while supporting local wildlife and ecosystems • Demonstrates how urban wildflower installations can help reconnect people with nature and create community around conservation • Emphasizes that "done is better than perfect" when it comes to conservation efforts and environmental projects
Check out Rooey's lo-fi music on Spotify, Apple Music, or at rooey.co and see how music and native plants can transform urban environments into thriving ecosystems.

I hope everyone (in the US) had a lovely Thanksgiving and the rest of you wonderful people had a great Thursday! In my family, we've always put up our Christmas decorations the day or weekend after Thanksgiving. I thought it would be fun to do a short episode about Christmas trees so you'd have something to listen to in case you're like us! I discuss origins of the tradition as well as pros and cons of different types of Christmas trees you could buy for your home! I'm also planning to do an episode next week about how plants are used in holiday traditions all over the world. I hope you're safe and well and that you enjoy this short little bonus episode!

Happy whatever month it is, everyone! Really, time is mostly meaningless these days. What's not meaningless, however, is this wonderful episode with Beth Nichols of Fronds With Benefits. Beth is an absolute delight of a human being and a brilliant plant scientist. She's just finishing up her PhD in computational plant science, has spent time as a biology teacher, is a talented artist, and really just so much fun to talk to. ALSO, she designed the fabulous new Planthropology logo! Check out this great episode where we talk about grad school, art, making science approachable, traveling the English countryside, and so much more!

It's part 2 of Archaeobotany! If you haven't already, go listen to part 1!
Y'all, I've been waiting for this one a long time! I've wanted to have an archaeobotanist on with me since the show started, and was lucky enough to find 3! Dr. Alan Farahani and his undergraduate researchers, Lydia Wolfe and Carlos Romo-Caballero make up the Farahani Lab of Archaeobotany at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and study the archaeological remains of ancient agriculture and what those remains mean anthropologically. They were the PERFECT guests to wrap up year 1 of Planthropology and I hope you love this episode as much as I did!

Happy October, Plant People! Today's episode is a lot of fun, but a little bit different. I sat down with Chris and Dylan from Pecan Ridge to talk about life and business! The company is VERY involved in the local community and is all about so many different plant-loving people. The grow pecans, they showcase local creators, they support farmers markets, and they're just genuinely good guys!

It's our second episode with Joe Vaughn! We talked about his day today responsibilities as a procurement forester, how climate change is affecting the forestry and timber industries, and about what it's like to be black in the green industry. We cover some heavy topics, but Joe is such a positive person and approaches inclusion, diversity, and representation in such a meaningful way, that I hope this leaves you inspired to be more inclusive and accepting in your own life. I know it was inspirational for me!

Dr. Jessica Tullar Caroom returns to the podcast to discuss the evolution of her community food systems work and the importance of building meaningful connections through growing and sharing food.
• Growing Together Texas supports gardeners, growers, and cooks as three interconnected parts of a healthy food ecosystem • Creating an online farmers market (LBK Grown) that helps local producers collaborate rather than compete • Offering subscription produce boxes with seasonal vegetables and recipe guides that consistently sell out • Starting small is key to garden success whether at home or in community settings • Approaching plant growing by difficulty level - begin with herbs (easiest), then leafy greens, roots, and finally tomatoes/peppers • Community gatherings like "Garden Guardians" provide vital support and knowledge sharing among garden leaders • Finding meaning in the process of gardening and community building, not just in the harvest • Building resilient local food systems by diversifying beyond the conventional market

Prairies and grasslands are great, and so are people who study them. I chatted with the recently doctored Dr. Kat Radicke. We met in grad school and were pretty fast friends. She's charming, funny, and super smart and I think you're really going to enjoy hearing from her. We talk about everything from the stress and challenges of graduate school, to collecting cow burps and it was a lot of fun! This episode also contains trailers for the Plants and Pipettes and Bald Scientist podcasts at the end.

It's time for our first Deep Dive episode! You may have noticed during this whole Covid crisis that some types of foods were pretty scarce on the shelves at your local grocery store. A lot of this is due to holes in the food supply chain. Hallie Casey from the One to Grow On podcast joins me again to talk about some of the ins and outs of food supply and how moving to local and regional market strategies can help fix some of the problems. Hallie is brilliant and well spoken and you're going to learn so much on today's episode!

Today is different, my friends. My grandfather passed away the evening of Tuesday, July 28. If you've been listening for a while, you've heard me speak about him and how he was the one who started my love of plants in nature. Today's episode is the best I can do to pay tribute to him. He was good and kind and selfless. That's the best compliment I know how to give anyone.

We couldn't nearly fit everything we wanted to cover into an hour or less, so we'll just have to have Kerry back on one day to chat again. I'll be honest, my heart is super heavy this week and I struggled with today's episode. Between my first plan falling through and just not feeling my backup idea, I was pretty lost until I remembered this little recording I did with my son Bradley from the end of March. It's silly, kind of pointless, and chaotic, and I hope it's a fun distraction from...well all the everything going on. Hang in there, friends. Be bold, smart, and kind in all your interactions and in your lives.

Memes. Olives. Guerrilla ecologists. What do all these things have in common? We talk about them all in this awesome episode with Rhett Barker and Curtis Sarkin from Wild Green Memes for Ecological Fiends. They were gracious enough to re-record with me after I had some technical problems and I'm so glad they did. We laugh a ton about memes and get serious about ecology. You're going to love it!

Paige Boyle is a Presidential Doctoral Research Fellow at Utah State, an advocate for Women in STEM, a self-proclaimed "earthworm whisperer," and a wonderful human. What's up plant people? I recorded the episode with my friends Amber Bates and Kaylee Deck of Grove Hill Farms like 1000 years ago, and I can't wait for you to hear it! Their business is a super rad agrotourism operation in North Texas and was such a beautiful place to record. I got to sit in Amber's dining room in her home on the farm and catch up with these two wonderful humans. Make sure you go check out Grove Hill Farms if you're ever in the Dallas metroplex or in North Texas (or Southern Oklahoma, for that matter)! You won't regret it!!

Hey, what's up Plant People? I hope everyone is doing well during these wild times we're in. I can't wait for you to hear today's episode. My guest, Dr. Jessica Tullar Caroom, is an epidemiologist and public health professional, community activist and organizer, leader of an organization that addresses hunger through gardening efforts, and the founder of a school garden movement in Lubbock. She's brilliant, insightful, and funny, and we dive deep into some of the issues surrounding health and wellness and how we might be able to address those things with horticulture and education.

I should come up with good show notes for this, but it's late, and my brain is tired, and there's this pandemic thing going down. Just listen in to me talk about plant stuff, struggle with technology, and answer some questions!

Hey, everyone! Super nerdy bonus episode coming at you! I'll be posting the recording of my first live show, Plants in Sci-Fi and Fantasy, from Lubbock-Con 2020 a couple of weeks ago! Tune in tomorrow for my thoughts on world building, Tolkien, weird blue aliens, and, like, so much Sam Gamgee. It was a lot of fun and I think you'll really enjoy it! Prepare yourself for a whole different kind of plant nerdiness!
