After Christian recapture in 1292, Alfonso Perez de Gusman played a heroic role in defense, naming the castle "Castillo de GuzmĆ”n". - Modern Tarifa and Cultural Celebrations Today, Tarifa is a city with 18,000 residents, is known for its historic old town with Moorish and Spanish architectural influences. The city hosts various religious ceremonies and festivals, including the Feast of Our Lady of the Light, dedicated to the patron saint, Mary, which includes processions, music, and other festivities. - Witnessing Unique Cultural Events We were fortunate to be in Tarifa during the end of the Feast of Our Lady of the Light, witnessing a captivating religious procession in the old town area with both people and horses. The procession featured a large wooden platform carried by women, a unique occurrence due to the platform's extreme weight. The platform was adorned with a statue of Mary, fresh flowers, and candles. Many women attending the procession wore mantillas, a significant cultural symbol. - Beaches and Outdoor Activities Tarifa is renowned for its stunning beaches, such as Playa de Los Lances, Playa de Valdevaqueros, and Playa Punta Poloma. These beaches are not only beautiful but also popular destinations for wind and kite surfing due to the strong and consistent winds in the area. Tarifa is one of Europe's top destinations for wind and kite sports. - Natural Beauty and Culinary Delights Tarifa is surrounded by natural beauty and is close to the Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales, a protected natural park with lush forests, hiking trails, and diverse flora and fauna. This period was marked by Communist rule, creating a stark contrast with the vibrant Prague we know today. Join us as we delve into the memories and experiences of a family's visit to this historic city. š Episode Highlights: - A Journey with Family: In 1977, my family embarked on a unique adventure to Prague. The trip was driven by a deep connection to our roots, as my grandfather had left Czechoslovakia for the United States at the same age I was during our visit ā seventeen. His courage in seeking a new life abroad left an indelible mark on me. - An Era of Contrasts: Upon arriving in Prague, we were met with a stark contrast to the vibrant city we know today. The buildings were cloaked in soot, covered in scaffolding that saw no activity. Red stars, symbols of Communist rule, adorned nearly everything, casting an oppressive shadow over the city. - Stories of Escape and Generosity: Our family history was filled with remarkable tales of escape ā from skiing out of the country to train journeys to Vienna. Despite the scarcity and long lines, the locals displayed incredible generosity, giving us what little they had. It was a poignant reminder that generosity transcends material wealth. - A Luxurious Hotel and a Communist Visit: Staying at a luxurious hotel at the end of the Charles Bridge was a pleasant surprise. Yet, the presence of Communist party members knocking on our door, demanding our relatives' passports, served as a reminder of the pervasive control and intimidation. - Divide and Exclusivity: We discovered a stark divide between stores for tourists and those for locals, mirroring the exclusivity of restaurants. It was evident that the people were oppressed, but their love for their country and culture remained unwavering. - Churches as Museums: The churches, once centers of worship, had been transformed into empty museums, with citizens fearing penalties for practicing religion. However, the rich musical heritage of the Czechs persisted, with impromptu concerts echoing through the streets. That concludes our look back in time at 1970s Prague. Kimberlite, a volcanic rock, is the primary host for diamonds. These precious gems are formed deep within the Earth's crust, under conditions of extreme heat and pressure, causing carbon atoms to crystallize and create diamonds. - Kimberlite Pipes: Diamonds lie buried approximately 93 to 124 miles below the Earth's surface, at temperatures of 1,652 to 2,372 degrees Fahrenheit and under intense pressure. Molten magma carrying diamonds erupts to the surface through kimberlite pipes, creating vertical structures that contain diamonds. Surprisingly, only 1 in every 200 kimberlite pipes contains gem-quality diamonds. - The Orapa and Jwaneng Discoveries: The Orapa region saw the first significant diamond discovery in Botswana.
