On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Mr. Lordi, an amazing musician and artist known for his music, visuals, cinema, and artistry. Pipeman is impressed by Lordi's latest music video, Dead Again Jayne, and asks him about it. Lordi explains that the video is meant to look like an 80s cable TV horror show showcasing a 1930s old Universal horror movie. He directed and edited the video himself, and he had fun doing two different styles, the 80s cheap cable TV style and the 1930s black and white film style. Lordi reveals that young people today do not understand the concept of television and the old cable TV show since they have never experienced it before. Lordi shares that he has never been on social media and still lives in the 80s and 90s, and he acknowledges that these decades were the greatest. Pipeman agrees, and they discuss how technology has changed the artistry of music videos. Lordi believes that the magic of the videos is gone now that anyone can do it, and the charm is lost. Lordi also talks about one little detail from the video shoot where he noticed that younger film crew members did not know how to use a film camera since everything is now digital. Pipeman and Lordi continue to chat about various topics such as how Lordi likes to scare people and how he sees himself as an entertainer rather than a musician. Screem Writers Guild, a new beast of an album by the beloved Finnish hard rock monster squad, is out TODAY on Atomic Fire Records. Its title — a “LORDIfied” play on words — is a reference to the “Screen Writers Guild,” an association of Hollywood screenplay writers (1920s to 1950s), yet there is no doubt that LORDI‘s musical version is much louder and fiercer. “The record itself isn’t a real concept album, but it obviously plays with the overall cinematic theme,” says Mr. Lordi. Screem Writers Guild was produced by Mr. Lordi with Mana and Janne Halmkrona as executive producers. Ilkka Herkman took care of mixing and Pauli Saastamoinen mastered the record. The artwork was also designed by Mr. Lordi himself who has made a name as director for the band’s vision since the early ’90s. In this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to John DeMena, an amazing musician who shares his story of coming to LA and going through the struggles of survival and chasing his dreams in the music industry. John's story was particularly challenging because he landed in LA just two months before the recession hit in 2000. Finding jobs and stability in the music industry was difficult for him. John lived in hostels with six to eight people for three to four months until he got a job and built his credit score. As a young adult, John was naive and didn't know what credit was in America. He thought that having money in his bank account would allow him to rent a place to live, but he was wrong. He had to learn the hard way about building credit and how things worked in America. John's early years in LA were full of challenges, but he survived and learned a lot of discipline. He believes that the difficult times he faced built his character and developed his personality, and he often says that it separates the boys from the men. John also shares his struggles in finding people who were artistically aligned with him or finding affirmation to stay together for a while. Many people come to LA and have to be part of multiple bands to pay their bills. But for John, the only way to move forward was as a solo artist who writes everything and then puts the band together. He developed a DIY approach and did everything himself. Overall, John's story is one of perseverance and determination to make his dreams come true despite the challenging times he faced. Pipemanradio talks with Steve Zing to discuss the music video for "blackout" which will be coming out in April. And as well the current album "The Wating" and all things Blak29 and Steve Zing. Coming from a background boasting such names as Samhain, Mourning Noise, and even the unholy legion that is Danzig, Steve Zing presents a new record from his current band and passion project, Blak29. The upcoming album The Waiting will be released on Cleopatra Records on March 3 and will be available on all streaming platforms. “Bleeding Love” is about the torments of life in this world, whether it be driven by love, anger, or the push and pull of what we are supposed to believe in and the fact that we are to think that someone else's beliefs is the right answer,” says Zing. "Raging Wars in my world, I'm coming back, coming back for more." The song starts off with a driving riff and some grunge-fueled vocals that wouldn’t sound out of place in an amphitheater or a small biker bar. It’s heavy yet catchy—If you aren’t singing along to the refrain by the end of the song, you aren’t doing it right. While other songs on the record lean harder into grooves or heavy riffs, this track has some distinct flavors of Alice in Chains paired with the very unique stylings of Blak29. Featuring Zing on vocals and drums, Dan Tracey bass and guitar, both wrote and produced the album. The songs on this record pick up where the first album left off, but also hit things harder than ever before. Zing also recruited Danzig bandmate Johnny Kelly, Tommy Victor, and Jyrki 69 vocalist of The 69 Eyes, for guest spots on the record. The sampling of songs on the album range from snarling, rock fury to more contemporary thrashers backed by the power of a storied musical career and a full command of the genre. As a concept band, the lyrics are from the point of view of an alien trapped in a small town in the USA during the COVID-19 Pandemic. They’re inspired by the strange things and weird behaviors vocalist/guitarist Barrett Holcomb witnessed from his friends and family during that time, personal experiences from the impersonal view of something that doesn’t understand the culture. In the single, the alien has accessed the internet and is now experiencing the internet culture for the first time and all of the worst things that people become on the internet. Holcomb details the importance of the track: “This was the song that started the band, it was the first part of the project Jordan Karg (drums/keys) approached me with, it was finished in 4 weeks and really got us in the groove for the next few songs. It’s about internet culture and the dangers of not having self-love, or trying to become what you see on the internet.” The album is set to release on April 20th, 2023 via Holcomb Records, and will blast listeners into space with smooth rhythms that will occasionally catch people off guard. All of the music on this was written by throwing dice and using number systems found in nature, like the kind that dictate how trees grow branches. On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman interviews the members of the band Fleischkrieg. Pipeman expresses his admiration for their music, which he describes as a combination of industrial metal and new wave. He appreciates that the band has created its own genre, which he finds cool for many reasons. Pipeman often asks bands to describe their genre, and they jokingly refer to their music as power slop, but Fleischkrieg has coined the term brutal wave, which they feel aptly describes their music. Fleischkrieg members credit Thomas for coming up with the term brutal wave, which they initially thought was silly but has since grown on them. When they have to describe their music, publicists ask them to come up with creative and unique genres that often lead to the creation of micro-genres, which Fleischkrieg feels forced to participate in. All the members of the band come from different musical backgrounds, but they share a common love for dance synth, metal, and new wave. This combination of influences led to the creation of their unique genre, brutal wave. Pipeman shares his musical journey with the members of Fleischkrieg, describing how he was a teenager in the 80s and lived on the Sunset Strip, where he encountered the snobbish attitude of US Metalheads towards new wave music. He recalls a funny incident when he discovered and fell in love with Adam and the Ants' Kings of the Wild Frontier, which he describes as one of his favorite albums to date. Pipeman expresses his appreciation for Fleischkrieg, which he believes has allowed him to be a metalhead and a new waiver at the same time, fulfilling his musical dream. Finally, the guys talk about how they come from different musical backgrounds but share a common love for dance synth, metal, and new wave, which led to the creation of their unique sound. FLEISCHKRIEG is the result of a chance encounter between an Uber driver and a drunk passenger partying in Seattle. The driver, Richard Cranor, and the passenger, Thomas Crawford, found themselves kindred spirits through a mutual love of Rammstein and industrial metal. When the opening act dropped out of Thomas’s solo “Ceraphym” show, he invited Richard to perform in their place. Richard agreed with the caveat that Thomas play guitars, and FLEISCHKRIEG was formed. The group, currently based in L.A., cite Rammstein, DK-Zero, Die Krupps, and Lord of the Lost as musical influences. Their moody electronic sound melds industrial metal with darkwave undertones, creating the genre of “Brutalwave”: a blend of new wave, metal guitars, and crushing industrial dance beats andvocals. The band dropped its recent single, “Hey Vámonos!” on August 19, with the video followed on September 1st. Their NEXT single, “Try to Forget It” will drop on September 30, and the video on October 13. The full album “The Last Resort” will be out October 28th and 7Horse show at the Roxy is on November 4. Blues/rock powerhouse 7Horse, comprised of longtime musical partners Phil Leavitt and Joie Calio, will perform their first live show in over two years at the famed Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood. This ambitious show will kick off the release of their latest album “The Last Resort,” bringing it to life via video representations of the album art and concepts. This show, which will include special guests, will also celebrate the tenth anniversary of 7Horse. Come listen to this love letter to the longevity of Leavitt and Calio’s partnership that 7Horse will play in gratitude to their fans. “LA has been the home base for our music for three decades,” Leavitt said. “The Roxy has special significance as it’s where things really got started for us. We’re thrilled to be playing our album release show at this legendary venue that’s like home to us.” The band will drop its next single, “Hey Vámonos!” on August 19, with the video to follow on September 1st. Over the years, Leavitt and Calio have rubbed shoulders with numerous musical legends. Amongst their many collaborations, they have toured with Sting, recorded with Ringo Starr, and worked with other musical household names on the production side. On this episode of The Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Kareem and Tom from the band Sunbeam Overdrive. The band is from the south of France, and they discuss their excitement for Hell Fest, one of the biggest festivals in Europe, that they attend every year despite being on the other side of the country. Pipeman shares his experience of attending the festival last year and how impressed he was with its organization, being a well-oiled machine with 360 bands where not one band went on late. He adds that their band must also be a well-oiled machine, which Kareem and Tom humbly accept. Kareem explains that he attended the festival last year for its entire duration of 12 days of absolute craziness and how the lineup was incredible, featuring bands from all over the world. The festival was a big carrier for French metal and an international band, making it a great addition to France. Pipeman agrees and says he is impressed by how they managed to pull off such a big festival, featuring so many bands from all over the world, after the whole Covid era and uncertainties. Pipeman also promises to promote Sunbeam Overdrive and asks the Hell Fest promoters to put the band on the lineup. He even hints that he might not come and cover the festival next year if the band is not included, which Kareem and Tom graciously accept. The band also mentions that they have not played there yet and hope to do so someday.
