Pulpo is the first Latina women owned brewery in Ohio. They are associated with Barroco arepa bar and Hola Tacos. Paola and John talked to me about navigating the waters of tumultuous craft beer market in 2023 as well as increasing production to satisfy their needs of the other locations. During the interview we touched on potential future plans and what they feel is currently the best situation for Pulpo.

This week I visited with Cory Smith from Twin Oast Brewing in Port Clinton, Ohio. It has been a couple years since I last visited with Cory and since then there have been several changes. They have added a 60BBL lagering tank to combine with their 30BBL tank. They have also put in a new biergarten which features pour your own beer faucets. The biggest news came in June of 2023 when Twin Oast aquired Catawba Island Brewing Company. This will eventually become a sour beer production facility, and fans of Hot Blonde don't need to worry as they will continue to brew that year round. This Friday and Saturday 9/29 and 9/30 Twin Oast will be hosting their annual Oastoberfest. You can buy tickets online through 9/26. After that you will need to purchase them at the door. They are $5 for Friday and $10 for Saturday. There will be plenty of entertainment as well as 19 breweries serving up their beer. If you have time you should definitely check it out.

My final guest of this episode was Dave Kornmiller from Brewery 33 in Hocking Hills. Dave provided a ton of insight into what's happening at their brewery located in southern Ohio.

Thursday, June 2, 2022 • Duration 01:59:40
This week Bob and I revisited the Smart Brew concept and dug a little bit deeper into it. We also discussed big news from Avon Brewing regarding an impending move to a new location that would expand their spot and allow them to produce more beer. Their parking lot will expand five times its current capacity, and they will be adding an event room. In the "Just one more" segment I cracked open a wet hop Head Hunter IPA from Fat Heads Brewing Company.
During the interview segment of the show, I sit down with Jon Hovan who is the co-owner of HiHo Brewing Co. We discussed how Jon and his wife fell in love with craft beer and homebrewing during their time in Denver Colorado. We also talked about how they went from both being teachers to developing their brewery into a staple of Cuyahoga Falls. During the segment we sampled their pilsner, IPA, their amazing white stout, and of course their World Beer Cup gold medal winning beer called Touchdown Brown.

Season 3: Eisode 7 - Blue Heron Brewery
Season 3 · Episode 7
Thursday, May 26, 2022 • Duration 01:51:17
This week Bob and I talk about a strange concept called smart brew that allows a restaurant, pub, or bar to brew their own beer in a space of only 150sq feet. Essentially the smart brew company creates the wort based on the style of beer you are looking to serve. The concept removes the brew house and lets the establishment focus on fermentation, dry hopping, fining, and serving. We discuss what if any impact this could have on the brewing industry as a whole. We also discuss Ohio issuing its 400th brewery permit.
During the interview segment of the show, we sat down with Mike Piazza who is the head brewer and co-owner of Blue Heron Brewery. We discussed his love of English style beers as well as getting started in home brewing and making the journey from an award-winning homebrewer making 10 to 15 gallons to becoming a professional brewer on a 10BBL system. We enjoyed some great beer with Mike as well as some great stories and tons of laughs.
At the end of the show we introduced a new segment called "Just one more". The first beer featured in Just one more is a NEIPA brewed by our good friend and co-host Bob from Wrecking Crew Brew Works. Listen as we discuss this uniquely complex beer.

This week Bob and I talk about the upcoming Ashland Alefest which takes place on 6/18. We also discuss the Ohio breweries that brought home wins at this year World Beer Cup. Thirteen Ohio Breweries brought home 15 medals. We also discuss BrewDog owner James Watt giving up 5% of his stake in the company to employees.
In the second half of the show I traveled to Willoughby, Ohio to talk to Paola Valbuena and Jon Hill from Pulpo Beer Company. Pulpo is the first Latin owned brewery in the state of Ohio. They bring a taste of Latin America to all of their beers on tap. During the interview we talked about their expansion to Crocker Park where they will open a tap room that features 24 different beers ready to serve.

Season 3: Episode 5 - Paradigm Shift Brewing Company
Season 3 · Episode 5
Thursday, May 5, 2022 • Duration 02:24:10
This week Bob and I talk about the upcoming Ashland Alefest which takes place on 6/18. We also discuss a report stating that the craft beer industry's growth has slowed and that in an industry that sees over 100 Billion in sales annually that Craft beer sales only makes up 27% of that number. The article from the Star Tribune late points out that breweries should begin to focus on growing their brand rather than their facilities or geographical footprint. Our final opening topic covers the apparent popularity of lagers within local breweries. In a report from the Wall Street journal the claim is made that smaller breweries are no longer afraid to add lagers to their portfolio due to recognition that this style of beer is popular amongst consumers.
In the second half of the show Bob and I travel down to Paradigm Shift Brewery in Massilon, Ohio. We sat down with Mike Malinowski who is the owner, brewer, and pretty much anything you can imagine at Paradigm Shift. We sampled a Kolsch, a sour, an IPA and his GABF medal winning Belgian Tripel. Mike talked about a big expansion project he is working on currently, and we discussed pandemic brewing as well as inflation and supply chain effects being felt at his brewery.

This week Bob and I celebrate the 50th episode. Actually, we just mention it and then we drink a really huge barrel aged Imperial Stout in commemoration. Bob and I talk about the beer fest that took place in Medina this past weekend, and in the news and views segment we tackle the topic of satellite tap rooms versus distribution expansion as a means of growing a brewery. Remember, you can email the show at feedback@thebrewerofseville.com and submit questions for our upcoming interviews, and now we have a new after-hours drunk hotline for the podcast. The number is 330-271-0874. Give us a call and leave your drunk messages and if they are good enough, we just might play them on air.
In the second half of the show, I travel up to 8th Day Brewing in Auburn, Ohio, and talk with one of the owners/brewer Matt Boddy. We discussed how he went from working a full-time construction job to becoming a full-time brewery owner and brewer. During the interview we sampled some amazing beers from Matt including a killer Kolsch, a fantastic Irish Ale, a solid West Coast IPA, and an amazing NEIPA. Stop in to see Matt at 8th Day Brewing Thursday thru Sunday. They are located at 11782 Washington St, Chagrin Falls, OH.
